So I've been spending a lot of time reading over on the SCP Wiki lately, and I think a few of you would really enjoy a lot of the stuff on there, but it's... I think 'inaccessible' is an understatement. After over a decade of colaborative fiction piling up on the site, literally thousands of articles and tales with mounds upon mounds of site-specific terminology and internal references across dozens of contradictory and half abandoned canons, even knowing where to start is a long way from obvious.

The clearest place to begin would be reading SCP-001 and going from there. Don't do that. Really, Really do no do that.

For my part, I would recommend starting with the Anti-Memetics hub, aka There is No Anti-Memetics Department. It's a (relatively) short, self contained narrative that gives a great glimpse into what the site can be, along with being a genuinely fantastic piece of media in it's own right.

Any time you run into terminology you don't understand (which will still be often, sorry there's no real way around that), check out the 'Essays and Resources' tab along the top bar and have a look around in there.

If you enjoy Anti-Memetics, then I can't recommend the On Guard 43 hub highly enough. It's huge, but just start from the top and keep reading, I promise it's worth it. Really a highlight of how great the format can be when it's in the hands of creative and talented authors (and at least one mad genius. If you can get through a PHMD article without developing a headache then you're a stronger person than me).

From there, go nuts. I've heard great things about S&C Plastics, and No Return seems good from what I've read so far. If you can slog through the first couple 'seasons' of Resurrection then both the Old Foes and New Enemies sections are pretty enjoyable, and tie in nicely with On Guard 43.

Authors I'm particularly fond of are HarryBlank, Placeholder McDoctorate, IHP, Grigory Karpin, qntm and Rounderhouse, so maybe worth checking out a random SCP from one of them to see if the world and format interest you.

There's just so much great content on the Wiki and I think it's pretty easy to be put off by the non-linear, opaque nature of the site, so if this gets even one person to give it a shot then I'll be really happy.

kevin taking jean's hand in his and turning his arm around to assess his wounds and asking him to make a fist and sighing in relief when he can like he's done this song and dance a million times before with jean. checking him after an incident and making sure he's still in one piece and jean allowing it because he loves him desperately and it's the only reprieve he has from all the abuse. the only time someone handles him with care. and it stings because he has to tell himself that kevin only cares because if jean can't play exy he's no use to anyone and if he's no use to anyone he'll be killed and kevin will be left alone and kevin desperately doesn't want to be left alone. but he's also the reason jean gets to keep his language even if it was only ever whispered in secret. and he's the reason jean had a collection of something to treasure, even of it was just magnets and postcards. and he's also 90% of the reason jean is alive because he made a promise and he couldn't bear to leave kevin even though in the end kevin left him behind. and even after that kind of betrayal he still has unwavering trust in kevin and goes where he tells him to so he'll be safe and defends his name when he needs to. because it's kevin. and maybe he can't be everything to jean but he will always be something to him.

a very interesting (and endearing, at least to me) detail about jean's character is how he tends to fix himself during a confrontation. (long post ahead)

despite the fact he looks just fine, he does it to self-soothe more than anything, because he knows he has no control over the situation. so if he can't get through harry, at least he's in control of how he looks. and he can look BETTER, more put together than harry, so he makes sure to show him that. every time.

constantly readjusting, correcting, dusting himself off every time he's confronting his former partner because i think he has a severe inferiority complex (since harry outranks him and refuses to accept any promotion, which makes jean perpetually stuck as a satellite-officer, tied to a self-destructive man who's also good at what he does + harry has had a chance at a love that's so redeeming that he pictures her as the game's equivalent of God, a love that jean desperately yearns for so he hates harry for blowing it, and hates himself for never finding such a love despite the fact he's more put together than harry, or so he claims) that flares up every time harry's in the vicinity. i don't think jean has problems asserting himself when harry's not around, though. we've seen that here.

jean's perfectly capable of being authoritative, and has power over his colleagues, contrary to popular belief on this website. of course, provided harry's not there.

because he'll start slipping every time. his body language is also incredibly stiff, i'm assuming it's to seem like he's composed, but that falls apart when you notice how many times he struggles with his breathing, how many times he has to collect himself.

naturally, since kim also outranks him, jean behaves the same way with him although less emotional. he loses the spite, turns a little more submissive, though his pride doesn't completely disappear, like authority indicates. i also believe it's because kim didn't address him properly, therefore jean didn't feel the need to extend more than basic respect towards him.

it's very interesting to see, since he seems to have this ongoing inner conflict between his pride and his self-hatred. believing he's better than harry, yet crumbling at his presence. laying down and taking it, then suddenly revolting. being in control until the reason you're forced to take control shows up, then suddenly you're not in control anymore and you have to fix your hair and your tie and dust your suit and cough to look like you have your shit together. to prove that you're better. jean's trying to tell harry that he's BETTER than him! that's why he does all of that shit! he's terrified of ending up like that! he's even more terrified of the fact that despite being the mess he is, harry IS better than him! HELLO!
