[Storm Bringer]
“In fact, I was against using Adam for such a frivolous investigation from the very start,” Dr. Wollstonecraft began in a huff as she crossed her arms again. “The government is always like this. They send a mechanical detective, then blow him up once they’re done to keep any secret information from getting out. [..] I suppose this is the government’s way of saying we ought to neglect science in favor of human life!”
Dr. Wollstonecraft, ma'am, I think your ethically-dubious opinions on science are better saved for other audiences.
Dr. Wollstonecraft (aka Mary Shelley) based on @videogamelover99's design!

to me qsmp as a whole overarching thing insofar is like. Theyre not supposed to win. these challenges propose ultimatums with uncertain consequences when it comes to failure and require the success of every party involved to some degree. they say "work as a team!" and then make that near impossible with other stressors like timers and competition and divine intervention. its hypocritical and unfair and a facade. they were supposed to fail that pressure plate puzzle they were supposed to press that button and they are supposed to fail to keep all the eggs alive.
these challenges claim to be building teamwork but instead create more conflict between the characters and drive them apart with things have little to no real consequence in the end, but are devastating to the individual because with what information they have been provided, and how they interpret things, it is so very important and so very real.
to win is to have everyone work together, but with the pressure each challenge adds it only drives them further apart and then makes them feel guilty for not working well together. it makes unity feel impossible. i think it will be a story about trying to overcome that despite it all

One of my favorite things about Starker as a ship is how many angles there are to approach the ship from! We've got:
Light: minimal to no age-gap angst or drama, no one has a major issue with the relationship, healthy relationship, usually of-age Peter
Gray: moderate to heavy age-gap angst or drama, other characters concerned about the relationship (or it's expected that they would be,) may or may not be presented as ultimately healthy but it's at least a consideration to the characters because they'd like to be healthy
Dark: we all know what darkfic is lmao. Your grooming fics, your villain AUs, most Starkercest though some of those can ride the gray~dark line, outright unhealthy dynamics or your unrepentant characters/settings where the question of "healthy" doesn't even enter into the equation, etc. etc. etc.
They are all beautiful flavors and I've written for all of them, but I'm curious about y'all! Obviously the lines here can be a bit blurry/subjective, but in general if you had to choose:

I’ve already seen some people call Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor ‘Fifteen,’ and (both in positive and negative contexts) David Tennant ‘the fourteenth Doctor.’
Gang, you’re not going to make it catch on. People did this with Tentoo and the War Doctor, and if you’re trying to give every single body a place in the numbering system you’ll now have to consider Jo Martin and the Timeless Child as well.
This new Tennant is going to be around for 3 eps at most and be remembered with some nickname like Tenthree. Ncuti Gatwa is Fourteen.

serial escalation in supernatural is so funny. In Season 4 it took an entire garrison of angels fighting for months/years just to get one guy out of hell. In Season 8 they just bribe a reaper, kill off a major recurring character, and get in and out within the episode. By Season 15 a trip to hell takes less than ten minutes, can be pulled off with ingredients they already had lying around, and doesn't even waste screentime showing them getting out again because it's that much of a nonissue. Everything about the show is like this.

sometimes it drives me literally insane to see romance requests that are like
--I want a romance wherein it's basically the happy epilogue throughout the book
--I want a romance that has great communication and they never withhold anything from each other ever
--no "miscommunication trope"
The last thing is just a general gripe about how so many of the things people say are tropes are not tropes, and it's pedantic and snobby but like. Miscommunication is so broad. It's not a trope. People are miscommunicating. WHAT are they miscommunicating about? Is one of them keeping a secret identity from their partner? Because a secret identity romance iS a trope. Is one of them withholding their feelings out of fear of rejection?
Because people DO miscommunicate. Often writers do write it clumsily. If people miscommunicate for no reason, sure, whatever. But if they miscommunicate BECAUSE of a REASON--like, often it's not even miscommunication lol. It's the hero keeping his dire supernatural secret from his wife because she'll die if she finds out (honestly, valid to me, but whatever). It's the heroine finding it difficult to trust the hero with her heart because her dad left when she was young (maybe cliche in theory, but actually a very real thing that happens).
If all you want is plotless nothing wherein everyone is happy and nobody makes mistakes, I personally have a hard time thinking of it as a book, because there is no story. It's just vibes. And essentially EVERY time, people have to mess up and make mistakes in order for there to be a plot.
I just don't understand the point.
#romance novel blogging#if all you want is pure vibes what you want is a short form story or fanfic sorry#you don't want a book#and i'm not saying every writer does miscommunication right--romance has a lot of clumsy writers who just shove it in#(lmao)#but miscommunication is often a backbone in its most broad form of conflict#'i cannot tell you this thing because i am scared for you'#'i cannot tell you this thing because i'm scared of what you'll think of me'#'i can't tell you how i really feel bc i frankly need therapy'#these are all forms of miscommunication and the thing is that when a writer does it well you don't even call it 'miscommunication trope'#but you'll still dismiss miscommunication as bad#the long game by rachel reid is a great example#generally a really well-received book!#ilya gets distant with shane and shane doesn't take ilya's feelings as much as he should#bc ilya has depression and is not telling shane about it#and there is NO REASON for ilya to do this other than internalized shame and a tendency to hide his pain to keep others happy#this is miscommunication!!! they are not communicating well!!! and people still like the book bc rachel reid is a good writer#who knows how to convey this in a way that isn't annoying and is relatable#lol ofc all of this is also symptomatic of the fact that people can't read nuance anymore apparently#and 'character behaves badly = book bad'#(for the record ilya and shane miscommunicate a lot in both books but those books are widely loved bc again rachel is a good writer)

There is a writer whose books I sometimes read for sheer brain candy - are they good? Doesn't matter! Not important whatsoever to my enjoyment of them.
One of the books has a character who is a werewolf raised by werewolf hunters, who was given a silver collar so he would never be able to shift, wasn't allowed to use the furniture, and his "bed" was a selfmade nest of blankets to curl up in. He was treated with violence his whole childhood by the only family he knew and as an adult helps them hunt werewolves because he believes that is his only use and value. He ends up being saved more or less and is thrown in with a werewolf pack and has to figure out from scratch he is and decide whether he still hates them, and himself.
The book only ever touches the very edges of this - the author loves to hint at traumas without ever fully committing to them in all of their books, frankly - but man does it make my whump brain just spark and crackle like crazy at all the possibilities there.
There are so many layers to this character's personality and troubled past that the author never seems comfortable really exploring but I just, I want moooooooooore

I read your rules, and I think it says you are still taking them as atm. Discard if not the case. Prompt: "I'd burn the world and everything in it for you" Yandere Link, dealers' choice for which. :)
I really tried to find a Link who could fit the prompt...and while I think BotW Link could be like that, I also caved in cuz I REALLY REALLY love him '//•~•//
Also felt a bit sassy and added in a bit of a background very similiar to my oc but tried to keep it rather neutral too (◕‿-)
TW: Yandere behavior, clinginess, Link kinda gives reader orders lowkey, people are mentioned to get hurt, selfish behavior, stubborn and selfish Link, non-consensual kiss
Yandere! Breath of the Wild! Link
Yandere Prompt 1.) "I'd burn the world and everything in it for you."
Tumblr media
This morning your mind refused to really focus and actively be here in the world.
Even the galloping of his horse seemed dull no matter how fast he ushered it to go. Mindlessly you followed him up the mount, sitting behind him, Link telling you to hold on tight and so you did. Yesterday did not do you well.
Again, your mind wandered there. The scene was so vivd in the moonlight and the night had seemed to stretch as you both went back home. 'Home' it was, the small little shack in Hateno that was still in the middle of many needed restorations and Link was so motivated to let it all happen, spending all the rupees needed to transform it into your home - he had asked you what you wanted - flowers, a garden, a stable, the colors and shapes - and yet it all went down the drain recently. Link stopped investing.
"...What's wrong?" Link looked over his shoulder as your hands absent-mindedly let go of his waist. His voice was meek. "Oh, nothing," You quickly shook your head and he asked you to hold on tighter on him. "...Say, how are you doing?" The young man looked at you, his light blue eyes softening for a moment before he faced the road again. "I'll be fine." He let out.
Link began speaking his mind less and less, you noted. He wasn't like that when you met him.
The forced smile on your face vanished and you made sure to wrap your arms around his waist tighter. Your friend would stop, collect some more things - food, ingredients, weapons, items - before heading off faster and faster and further to the coast of Hyrule.
"Where are we even going?" You finally asked and Link ignored you yet again. Kakariko was just a hill down and the dirty blonde was set on visiting even this late at night - that's what you assumed.
"Stay here." He whispered as he quickly changed his clothes to something dark. With bated breath and worry, fidgeting in your place but not courageous enough to disobey him, you watched as Link sneaked down and began taking the crops, food and clothes out of people's shacks. It was only a matter of time before one local noticed the smallest of noises and began yelling at the intruder - not realizing it was Master Link, the chosen hero as they brought their pitchfork. Cold blue eyes snapped at them and with a swift move, the local fell on the ground, unconcious.
You panicked, gasping as he returned and grabbing onto him to slow him down, "Link!" You breathlessly let out as the rest of the village woke up. Ignoring you once again he grabbed you, hoisted you up on the horse and fled.
Fingers twitched as you held onto the rails and pulled them back once you were out of sight. The horse brayed and stopped, causing both of you to stumble.
"Link! What was that?! What's gotten into you?!"
He tried to have you sit back on the horse yet you refused.
"These are our friends! The entirety of Kakariko trusts you!"
You watched something shift in his gaze and his lips were a thin line.
"We're leaving." You almost blurted out a confused noise and your face scrunched up.
"Leave where to?"
"We're leaving Hyrule." Link was blunt even as his gaze had shifted as he saw the look on your face. Your lips were pressed into a thin line, eyes widened as you understood what he meant. "Link", you started with a measured tone, "You can't go. We may have come this far but we aren't done. Everyone here needs you."
"I don't need them." He felt couragous enough to finally bark out his frustrations - yet as he stomped forward to grip your arms, his eyes softened. Softened in the way whenever he was able to recall a distant memory, a past long-forgotten by those who used to know him. You were there when he remembered each little piece of his past and you were especially there for him when he shed tears at the very last one. "I just need you." You both frowned and you feared that Link would start crying again. His grip tightened and you tried to ignore the pain.
"This isn't right." Nevertheless, you tried to stir him back to the right path. "Everything is still in shambles. We need to fix it." "For whom? Everything is already in shambles, no one remembers me. Those who did are gone. Now...I only have you."
There was a thought in your head, a very obvious fact but for his sake you bit your tongue. Holding his arms in return, you forced him to look at you in the eye and spoke sternly. To finally, finally get it into his head. Hoping that what had happened last night would not deter him.
"What about the princess? She saved you, she is protecting everyone right now, she remembers you still. And now she is waiting for you." There - you can clearly see through him and through his glare. Link's mind shifts to long, golden hair while he attempts to surpress the fact that she suffered as much as he did - he could recall that well. Yet he wanted his selfishness to win still. "I remember her." He spat, "Remember an envious princess who despised my destiny as much as I did. I don't want it anymore."
"Link, please-"
"I don't want it! I just want you!"
Finally, you couldn't take it anymore.
"You are the hero! You must save the world!"
Hands still gripping your arms, he lowly leaned on you before shaking his hanging head slowly. Staying still for a few moments more, you feared he wouldn't answer you anymore and stubbornly follow his selfish wish anyway.
Still shaking his head, Link slowly lifted it to stare into your eyes - his were drunkily narrowed, eyebrows down with a crooked grin, looking like he wanted to cry.
"I'd burn the world and everything in it for you."
Again, your breath hitched as it did the night before as Link left helpless travelers to their demise to monsters, simply because they refused to help you while they could and he was dragging you to safety.
Whimpers escaped your throat as he rushed towards you, pressing his calloused lips thinly against yours.
You vivdly remembered that he said the exact same words to you that night as well but you desperately tried to delude yourself of such a possibility. That the chosen hero you were supposed to help turned out to be a selfish, suffering man who found solace in your existence when everyone forgot his.

I have notes muted on the "must a story have conflict" post but it just ended up on my dash organically again and I cannot subject myself to reading the tags long enough to find the origin of it, but I am shaking hands with everyone roasting whoever tried to use Le Guin's carrier bag theory of fiction as counterevidence. That essay is literally like... exactly the point of my post. It's literally about whose daily problems and struggles we view as legitimate conflict worth narrating. Plot does not equal conflict and conflict does not equal fighting or violence. Oh my god.
