What makes Spec Ops: The Line special?

Spec Ops: The Line is a shooter type game about a three-person group of soldiers: Lugo, Adams and Captain Walker! The three of them have been tasked with a recon mission to a Dubai that is currently experiencing devastating sandstorms with no precedents at all; basically they have to go in, look if there's survivors, and if there is they have to send a signal so that rescue teams come and take them. However, they discover that a squadron of american soldiers are being held hostages by some armed rebels in the city, and so they go more and more deep into the city to investigate

What makes this game so different is the story and how the game portrays war: see, most shooter games like CoD treat war as a white and black concept, there's bad guys and there's us, the good guys, who kill the bad guys and get rewarded by it. Spec Ops: The Line instead fleshes out our enemies (for example if you shoot an enemy you can heard his name being called out by his teammates sometimes, and sometimes you can hear them talking about their values, homeland and what they do to keep calm in the devastating land they're in, because at the end of the day they're survivors of a catastrophe)

The game makes you wonder at the end of each mission if you did the right thing, if killing all these enemies, who are the people you should be rescuing, is the right decision: that's another thing, the game makes your decisions not matter, whatever you do, the only way to prevent all the horrors of this warzone was to just turn back and do your original mission, which is not possible, because the player wants to keep going, the same way the main character (Walker) wanted to be a hero and rescue the people himself and stop whoever is behind this.

Spec Ops: The Line doesn't let you feel good for shooting a bunch of people you don't even know, it's not a story about honor nor a happy one, because it's war.

Spoilers down below!!!

For example there's a part in the game where you're confronted to an army of soldiers, the only way to keep going forward is to grab white phosphorus and burn them in a inhumane but at the same time only way to keep moving forward and "save" the people of Dubai

You do that. And when you get across the map, you can see the horror you have made, soldiers are crying out to you for help because they're agonizing, and once you get over that, you discover that a bunch of civilians died in the crossfire, including woman, men and children.

What does this mean?

You only make things worse for Dubai and it's people, why? Because you wanted to be a hero and feel honor by killing for your government, which is one of the few messages leaves in the loading screens

Killing for yourself is murder, killing for your government is heroic, killing for entertainment is harmless.

It also emphasizes on the amount of war crimes you commit just because you think war is just shooting everything that moves

The US military does not condone the killing of unarmed combatants. But this isn't real, so why should you care?

Spec Ops: The Line is special because it shows the real and crude side of modern war that does not include being a honorary soldier full of valor and heroism, but having to live with the consequences of what you thought was necessary to win and taking them into the grave with you (PTSD is a heavily implied thing in this game)

Another obscure arcade shooting game (looks like a marine version of Orbitron, actually) from the early 80s that puts you in control of three ships defending an island from enemy air attackers. It's a challenging and enjoyable game where you engage in intense dogfights and precise shooting to fend off the relentless aerial assault. As you progress, the game becomes even more challenging, testing your strategic thinking and shooting skills. Unfortunately, after completing the first loop, Victory adds an extra layer of difficulty by removing the radar, thus making the game virtually unplayable.

I've finally digitalised all the important characters I currently have in mind for my WIP analog horror story [>continue?] !!! more info under the cut!

Rex T. Racer Game: Dino Racing (2005) Rex T. Racer has nothing going on in that head of his besides winning, being the best and doing everything he can to finish 1st place. That was, until a strange character joined the race one day. Samir! But even stranger was the weird aura following him around... Rex isn't very fond of Samir and isn't afraid to let him know that. He'll drive over his toes and drop banana peels in front of him as he leaves.

Matt Shell Game: Matt Shell: The Lost Kingdom (1997) In this game you have to solve puzzles to discover the mysteries of the lost kingdom, while also educating young children on historical things! Matt has a very cool-guy attitude, but not in a cocky way. Just in the sense of him saying quirky one-liners and being the hero of the story. Though as smart as Matt is, he certainly can't explain why the sky is turning from day to night in weird chunks after meeting his new friend, Samir

Masuda Chiyoko Game: New Moon Rising (2008) It tells the story of a group of young adults who all travel to a cabin in the woods to stay for the weekend. In hopes of enjoying their summer together again like old times, they all meet up at a friend's uncle's cabin. All seemed well and good, until they find one of their friends bloody and dead in one of the guest rooms. With the phone lines cut and the car tires punctured, it seemed there was nothing else to do but to stay at the cabin and figure out who could perform such a horrid act. Chiyoko is rather standoff-ish and quick to snap at someone. She might be on good terms with all her friends, but that doesn't mean she likes getting all touchy touchy and huggy with them. She's highly suspicious of everyone and is dead set on getting to the bottom of this murder mystery. Chiyoko is HIGHLY suspicious of Samir (who has replaced the code of one of her friends with himself to fit into the world) and keeps a close eye on him at all times. If you visit the room she's staying in, you can find a conspiracy board with red wires hanging from the wall.

Casey White and Mark Ragestar Game: Hellfire In Space (2004)

In this game, they're a space soldiers fighting alien/demon hybrids with their fellow comrades. Casey is the son of the president of the United States of America. Mark Ragestar the son of an infamous space pirate who's thought to be dead, but in actuality, is the main villain of the game. They're both best friends and really close in a semi romantic way. they will eventually follow Samir in his travels as the familiar stars around him seemingly seem to disappear...
