The picture above was made with Pixlr. The edits of Sceptile and Krookodile were made by JorMxDos on DeviantArt. A follow-up to this post here.
Here's Ash's main team if Ash started in Kalos instead of Kanto. I swapped out Lycanroc for Krookodile because the Sandile line is in the Kalos Pokédex.
Ash and Serena go through Kalos, Hoenn, Galar, and possibly Paldea in this. As they are actual childhood friends in this what-if, AmourShipping is possible. Ash ended his run with seventy-eight Pokémon under his ownership. Obviously, that number will change here.
Clemont and Bonnie will be traveling with them through Kalos.
The main team is as follows: Pikachu, Greninja (Hero Form), (Mega Y) Charizard, (Mega) Lucario, Sceptile, and Krookodile. As for reserves...
Kanto: Butterfree, Pidgeot, Snorlax, Kingler, Ivysaur, Squirtle, Tauros, Muk, Dragonite, and (Gigantamax) Gengar
Johto: Heracross, Tyranitar, Noctowl *Shiny*, Donphan, Espeon, Scizor, and Houndoom
Hoenn: Corphish, Swellow, Torkoal, Flygon, Sableye, and Glalie
Sinnoh/Hisui: Infernape, Torterra, Staraptor, Buizel, Gliscor, Hippowdon, Arcanine (Hisui), and Gabite
Unova: Scraggy, Scolipede, Gigalith, Palpitoad, and Golurk
Kalos: Talonflame, Tyrantrum, Hawlucha, Dragalge, Noivern, and Trevenant *Shiny*
Alola: Dartrix, Lycanroc (Dusk), Incineroar, Vikavolt, and (Gigantamax) Melmetal
Galar: Rillaboom, Sirfetch'd, Dracovish, Corviknight, Grimmsnarl, Centiskorch, and Runerigus
Paldea: Skeledirge, Dudunsparce (Two-Segment Form), Annihilape, Lokix, Armarouge, and Iron Valiant

[Pokémon] Favorites, Step 1
I am almost done with step one of this...thing. A while back, image compilations of favorite Pokémon by type/generation and teams used by generation were floating around.
Thus, I made a template, but never finished filling it in.
I did this because it’s kinda hard to decide on favorites when there are now eight hundred and seven species of Pokémon (and that’s not counting forme differences [another 187], Mega Evolution [48]/Primal Reversion [2]/Confinement and Release [1], fusion [4], regional variants [18], sexual dimorphism [98], or shininess [total that and subtract 6, so 1159]; grand total: 2,324 visually distinct Pokémon).
I mean, c’mon: you want me to pick just 22 out of all that?
“Wait, where are you getting 22?”
One Favorite per Type x 18 types
Favorite legendary or mythical Pokémon.
If I subdivided it, I could do 23 (favorite legendary, favorite mythical) or 24 (favorite Special legendary [Mewtwo], favorite other legendary [Articuno], favorite mythical [Mew, though I like one per generation save Gen III and only kinda-sorta don’t like either of those two]).
Favorite Mega (or Primal Reversion or...)
Favorite Fossil. I did this one because it’s odd enough that it kinda counts as a category people might ask about.
Alternatively/in addition, I could do Favorite Eeveelution (Vaporeon, then Umbreon).
Now, I’m not done: I still have seventeen spots (not counting “of all time”) where I have more than one member of an evolutionary line (not counting Mega formes), 39 places with ties (several more than two-way), and eight places where I'm unsure about my answer altogether (usually because it’s a case of “well, this is better than nothing, but I don’t actually like it all that much”). This is just minor editing, though: since I was going by process of elimination, I created an extra list as I went of runners up and honorable mentions, so it’s just making some last minute decisions.
I can say that I’m better aware than ever that I have a bias towards Fire-type starters initially (Greninja eventually beat Fennekin after I stopped like Delphox’s fur and Bulbasaur quickly became my favorite, but my first choice when Gen I came out was, of course, Charmander; I kinda sorta like Sceptile and Piplup, but Infernape beat out Empoleon, so I only have three non-Fire-types on the list of “favorite starters”). We’ll see if I find any other patterns (like bias towards a specific generation, though I already know I like Gens I and II more than the rest).
