FEARLESS (TAYLOR’S VERSION) SENTENCE STARTERS PART ONE

Blood-red eyes pierced the fading darkness, stabbing through Akira’s gaze like their words deserved to die. Yet they didn’t…Those held nothing but emotions warranted to berate the short warrior, and while he wanted to tell them off for not even knowing the first thing about how difficult all this had been, Lilia kept his mouth shut. Akira probably knew that too, and could only imagine all the emotions swirling within Lilia at the moment.

How could these foreign wizards look up to him anyways, when he was just a stranger unbound by the technicalities of their lands and unwavering in his forceful way of interacting? He had practically jump scared every wizard in the mansion - at least, the ones who could be easily scared, and took precautions so no wizard would accidentally try to kill him upon reflex - and invaded all of their spaces with his endless curiosity and wonderment. And yet they were all varying levels of willing when it came to helping him get home, and even complimented him on his battle prowess and other unique skills. Training together, palling around, walking through various locations in order to teach him so many things - it almost felt like he was back at Night Raven College, or in the distant past with Malleus and Silver in Briar Valley. Doting on the younger wizards, watching trainees work hard every day towards their goals, and helping whip everyone into shape while also having a big dose of fun for himself. It almost made him let his guard down completely around them all.

Almost. Because, especially in a foreign land, you couldn’t be too careful about what unknown dangers lurked in the shadows. But Lilia never expected to lose against such forces. It was a request of monster extermination and supply protection given to the wizards that had more than they were prepared for, and of course blood was going to be shed because of it. Lilia just wished it had been his own, not Shino and Heathcliff trying to both protect each other and their newfound friend. Not knowing how exactly to use his magic against these foes, especially when he was still getting used to his new way of summoning it up in this world, proved a failure at the worst of times. It was desperation, after Shino had gotten so injured yet could barely stand, that made Lilia grab onto the two of them and teleport them back to the mansion. “Mission be damned,” he had said in front of a surprising crowd, leaving the injured wizards in front of Akira without another word before teleporting back to the den of monsters. It was barbaric then, after having sneaked a sword from the mansion, that he decided that none of these things should be kept alive. Supplies be damned; materials be damned; his own magic and wellbeing be damned; if blot worked in this world, he would certainly find out after quelling the rage in his heart with fresh deaths mounting on a long since abandoned counter. He wondered how impressed his queen would be to see these masses slaughtered so quickly, or would she shiver under a long forgotten thirst for war? Would Malleus and Silver try to stop his outrage with their own magic or persuasion? Would he even listen to them anymore?

All questions came and left as swift as the fight itself, yet the aftermath of both weighed heavy on him. His clothes were soaked in areas, but with the monsters’ blood or his own he wasn’t sure, yet didn’t care either way. He felt every ache in his body, emotional and physical, yet at once felt nothing at all but the gaping feeling of defeat. For he had promised to lead them and protect them, with that cheeky confidence he loved to wear, and yet he…

He slashed the sword through the air, all the blood that was on it practically becoming daggers hitting the nearby trees, before he began walking in the direction he pleased. He didn’t mind being lost in the woods for a millennia. Just as long as he took a nice walk to calm himself, that was what mattered. No thoughts of going home - to either home, for Malleus and Silver would be so disappointed in him, and Akira was certainly too busy to worry about him now. No thoughts at all, really. Just a walk until he could breathe and think again like normal.

And it was in the breaking dawn before he could do so, though he can’t help but think that Akira’s shouts from behind him also snapped him out of whatever darkness had possessed him, taking a deep breath in and out once the sage started speaking. And Lilia listened intently, yet didn’t dare turn around, instead taking his wand from his jacket’s chest pocket and staring at the tiny jewel inside. Dirty with dried blood, but underneath showed a shining green that stood the test of time. It was in his surprise at the small sight that Akira’s words struck him, turning quick on his heel to reveal the severity of his physical state - disheveled beyond belief, caked in dirt and dried blood, cuts and bruises that littered his body. Yet it was all deserved; another scene of a fight well fought, yet a sentence that painted out his failure in his heart.

Any anger in him leaves with a soft gust of wind, all tension leaving his body as he continues to stare at the other, before looking done at his wand once more. “...I honestly did too.” muttered soft enough for another gust to carry it away, before pocketing his wand in a neat way that would make Silver chastise his sloppy appearance less. “All the more reason that I should get out of your hair sooner rather than later. I'm completely unreliable in my current state, though I am impressed with how well I did with this after so many years.” He looks over to the sword in his hand, raising it to inspect it - tip now dirty from being dragged through the ground - before doing impressive slashes and stabs in the direction of a nearby tree. If he could sheathe it, he would, but he just decides to stab it into the ground so as to never hold it again. “...Are Shino and Heathcliff recovering well? Sleeping like two babes while holding each other's hands, I would imagine?” An optimistic way of avoiding all the negatives, at least in Lilia’s mind, mustering up whatever smile he could for the sage as arms crossed over his chest. Akira would’ve taken care of them well, and they certainly would’ve taken care of each other through their bond, so he’s sure that they survived the night at the very least. If they had perished, though, Lilia was certain that all the creatures in the forest would be gone in the blink of an eye. Though he would certainly teleport Akira far away so as to not become collateral, for no matter how much they may hate Lilia now, Lilia couldn’t truly hate them yet.

The Konoha 11 + Sasuke Using The Boop Function On Tumblr

Naruto is the Boop King. He has that shit maxed out within half an hour, maybe even using shadow clones on different devices. Sasuke is his biggest booping victim.

Sakura will boop all of the Konoha 11, but within a speed she thinks is “socially acceptable”. The only exemption is Sasuke, who will too find many boops from her in his inbox. It started with just one, but then she couldn’t stop herself.

Sasuke clicked “boop back” on accident when he saw Naruto’s boops in his inbox and accidentally makes Naruto’s day. The only boops he is consistently sending out are to Itachi. Naruto’s boops alone are responsible for his boop meter being on max after just logging on once.

Sai will research the purpose of these boops before using the function. Everyone gets 1 (one) boop from him. He even finds Kakashi’s secret smut account and sends him one boop.

Hinata is very reluctant with her boops, only sending a few to her teammates, and one back to Sakura. Accidentally boops Naruto and wants to bury herself in the ground from shame, but eventually receives 200 boops from Naruto in return.

Shino will adamantly check who he gets boops from, making sure he isn’t forgotten. The only accounts he boops are entomology research institutes.

Kiba is almost as eager as Naruto. However, he thinks it would’ve been a better feature if it were dog paws. He wants to boop Hana to annoy her, but accidentally boops the official tumblr page of her vet practice.

Neji doesn’t want to participate at first, but is eventually pressured into it. Like Sai, he sends one boop back, but only to those who boop him in the first place.

Lee is in an official booping competition with Naruto. For every extra boop he receives, he runs a lap, when the boop meter reaches max, he does a squat and when it gets to Lol territory, he switches to push-ups.

Tenten sees this as an opportunity to let out her frustrations about Lee, sending several evil boops along his way. To her annoyance, Lee just sees that as an extra motivation. She sends a boop to Neji too to encourage him to use the feature.

Shikamaru thinks booping others is a drag, but will send a few to his closest friends. He doesn’t bother checking his inbox, most of the boops are from Naruto, Kiba and Lee anyway.

Choji sends boops to all of his friends, like Sakura in a speed which he thinks is socially acceptable, as well as some super boops to his favorite restaurants.

Ino sends the most boops out of the Konoha 11 girls. She sends a decent amount, however super boops are only sent to the other girls, as she thinks men are not deserving of such a gesture. The only exception would be Sasuke, but she doesn’t boop him because she’s trying to get over him.

Cain: That's true… His Majesty, the First King, led a group of both humans and wizards. Wartime is always a time of social unrest. But despite that, wizards and humans were able to fight side by side as brothers in arms… Their bonds must have been amazingly strong. It's almost like a miracle.

Arthur: …Miraculous bonds, huh…

Cain: …Hm? I think I just heard Chloe's voice…

Chloe: Prince Arthur! Cain!

Arthur: Chloe!

Chloe: Really bad news! Lennox kidnapped Shylock…! He pulled him into the ocean…!

Arthur: Lennox did?!

Cain: Into the ocean…?!

Shino: Ow…! She just hit me with her tail!

Nero: Ain't she just on guard because of how unfriendly you're bein' towards her? C'mere, miss mermaid. Heath's gonna get worn out like that.

Seashell-Crowned Mermaid: …! …!

Nero: Wah, cold…!

Shino: Nero. Did you really think you were a nice and friendly young man, unlike me?

Nero: I mean, the Sage said I'm easy to talk to. And I did work in the service industry…

Faust: Heath was the one who rescued her in the first place. That's why she trusts him, I think.

Heathcliff: I'll be just fine. This mermaid is… I mean, she's pretty light. I wonder what her name is.

Shino: Do mermaids even know what names are?

Nero: You can't just say they don't. I mean, look at the detailed craftsmanship on that seashell hair ornament she's wearin'. If they're makin' hair accessories, ain't that mean they're not too different from human civilization?

Seashell-Crowned Mermaid: …

Nero: Haha… What big ol' eyes you've got, starin' at me like that. Yer a pretty fancy one, ain'tcha. Cute.

Seashell-Crowned Mermaid: …

Heathcliff: She's…embarrassed?

Shino: I can't believe you'll even make passes at a mermaid…

Nero: That ain't what I'm doing! You've got it all wrong! I just thought she'd like it more if I were more friendly…

Faust: Given she can understand us, I do feel awkward just calling her "the mermaid". Let's come up with something to call her for now. Any good ideas, Heath?

Heathcliff: For her name?! Um, a name…how about… How about Vespa?

Seashell-Crowned Mermaid: …!

Faust: She nodded.

Nero: And she's smilin'. Sounds like she likes it.

Shino: What?

Heathcliff: Huh?

Shino: I want to get a name from you too.

Heathcliff: Shino, you're already "Shino". Vespa has something she wants to tell us. She understands us, too. For "yes" she raises her right hand, and for "no" she raises her left.

Nero: D'ya have somethin' you wanna say?

Vespa: …

Nero: Woah, you're right. She raised her right hand.

Faust: Has something happened underwater? Or maybe, on land? Your right hand for underwater, or left hand for on land.

Vespa: …

Heathcliff: Her right hand… Do you need us to help with whatever happened underwater?

Vespa: ……

Heathcliff: She raised her right hand halfway…

Shino: I don't get it. If Owen were here, we'd be able to understand what she's saying.

Heathcliff: No…

Shino: …

Heathcliff: (Even without being able to understand the words of any living creature like Owen can, I can somehow understand what she's trying to get at.) (I can sense her unrest. I can see the thin flame of fear and mistrust in her red eyes as she stares at us…) (I don't think she fully trusts us yet.) Vespa. I'm the Eastern wizard, Heathcliff.

Vespa: …

Heathcliff: I'm one of the Sage's wizards. Do you know about Eastern Country and the Sage?

Vespa: …?

Nero: Doesn't look like she does.

Faust: I wonder what kind of information is circulating in the undersea mermaid culture.

Shino: She does know what wizards are.

Vespa: … …!

Nero: Now she looks like she's kinda thinkin' about somethin'. That's what her face's sayin', anyway.

Faust: Her expressions are about as easy to read as Shino's.

Heathcliff: (Yeah… I think so, too.)

Shino: My expressions aren't that dramatic.

Heathcliff: (Hm…? Vespa's rubbing her tail over the ground…) (Is she itchy…? Does she have a little crab or something pinching her…?) (No, that's not it. She's drawing something.) Are you drawing that picture to show us something?

Vespa: …! …!

Faust: That's some passionate nodding.

Nero: Then let's get to askin' someone in the castle where we can get her some writin' utensils.

Heathcliff: Yeah.

Nero: Oh, right. Speakin' of the castle, its new lord is…

Heathcliff: You mean Miss Dianne?

Nero: Yeah. Her reputation ain't very good. She's the previous lord's granddaughter. It ain't that they hate her, but the people in the castle are still bein' put in a bad position.

Heathcliff: (A brand-new lord with a poor reputation…) (I can't say I'm not going to be put in a similar position, since I need to take over as the Lord of Blanchett someday…) (My father has been called an uncommonly wise and benevolent ruler. He's fair to both his servants and his people, not letting himself be restrained by his social status or position in the world.) (Of course I'm proud of that, but I'm scared that I'll be a disappointment in comparison…) (After all, I'm a wizard…someone the populace avoids as much as they can…)

Vespa: …?

Heathcliff: Ah, I'm sorry. Nero, do you know what's troubling the castle's servants?

Nero: As soon as Miss Dianne took the helm, she started makin' decisions about all sorts of things without askin' anyone for advice, and now everything's a mess. Seems like her decidin' to completely abandon magical technology is what really got them all worked up. Sounds like the kitchen had a piece of magitech in its oven… And Miss Dianne ordered it removed. When the head chef objected, he got demoted to gardener.

Faust: She turned the head chef into a gardener? So that's why our lunch tasted so off compared to the last time we ate here…

Nero: Yeah. The ex-vice chef who also used t'do gardening told me about it. Since the head chef can't cook anymore he up and left the castle entirely, and now he's makin'… What's it called. That thing Owen was talkin' about…

Shino: Torta di cocco.

Nero: …Yeah, he opened a shop for that, and it sounds like he's doin' great for himself there.

Heathcliff: Why is she getting rid of magical technology to that degree?

Shino: Because she wants to be friendly with wizards? Not that I thought she was all that friendly.

Nero: Nah, I know what you're sayin'. That little miss didn't seem like she actually had any interest in any of us. Pretty sure she only wanted the Sage to listen to what she had to say.

Faust: I see…

Claudia: I'm so sorry she's put you through so much trouble. She's not a bad girl, really.

Nero: …And you are…?

Claudia: Claudia Chenon. And you are part of the Sage's wizards, yes? Do you suspect Dianne of something? And this girl here would be… Wh-what?! Scales?! A mermaid?! Amazing! This is the first time I've ever seen one!!

Shino: It's your first time seeing one even though you're a local?

Nero: This ol' lady's actin' pretty cutely.

Heathcliff: Claudia Chenon… Um, would that mean that you're…

Faust: She's someone related to the disappearances on the island. Don't get too worked up about it.

Vespa: …! …!

Heathcliff: She keeps raising her right hand… Do you know something about the disappearances happening here?

Vespa: …! …!

Shino: She raised her right hand again!

Nero: Alright! Time to get her some stuff to write with…

Claudia: I can assist as well, if you're looking into the disappearances. There's a door that appears around the island that lets you take a peek into the past, and I've seen it.

Faust: A door that lets you see into the past…?

Claudia: Yes. In truth… …What's going on… The sky clouded over so suddenly…

Nero: … Watch out…!

Claudia: Huh…?!

Lennox: <Mare Praeda>

Faust: …gh, is everyone okay?!

Lennox: …

Faust: …Leno…?!

Lennox?: Wizards, I see. I suppose I can turn the lot of you to stone first.

Faust: …You're not Leno… You bastard! What have you done to Lennox?!

Lennox?: <Mare Praeda>

Faust: <Salliuqnart Mulcredo>!

Akira: Hwylryn, you're a dragon?!

I looked over him again, from the top of his head down to the tips of his toes. Ignoring the mystical air that surrounded him, he looked completely human. I definitely didn't see anything huge and dragonlike. Hwylryn tilted his head, looking pleased with himself.

Hwylryn: Are you surprised?

Akira: Rather than surprised, it's more…

Mithra: Can dragons turn into people normally? Is that something all of them can do, not just you?

Hwylryn: Of course not! I'm just special like that.

Mithra sounded really excited, bouncing happily from one syllable to the next. He's always been a fan of big monsters, after all. Of course he'd be interested in dragons. Hwylryn crossed his arms, looking smug. It seemed like the two of them shared that opinion.

Hwylryn: While I can't say I've checked out every clan around the world, my family is quite proud, and they enjoy looking like themselves. I can't say the idea of turning into a human would have ever occurred to them.

Mithra: I see.

Hwylryn: But really, I'm not totally sure. There might be more of them like me out there. We were once twin sea dragons. My brother Gwawlyn had the rougher temperament. I had to get very good at being charming and entertaining so that he wouldn't kill me, or so it's been said. Am I charming and entertaining?

Mithra: Maybe…

Akira: Definitely.

Hwylryn: Haha, why thank you. Originally, I transformed by having a wizard cast a spell on me. But it started getting annoying to have to keep asking someone else to do it. Eventually I figured out how to do it myself while working through some other stuff.

Akira: Y-you figured out transformation magic while working through other stuff…?

Mithra: Dragons originally held domain over the weather. Tiletta told me they had enough power to rival Oz. It's probably not unheard of for one to learn how to use magic.

Akira: Then, Hwylryn is… A transformed dragon…?

There was a smile in Hwylryn's eyes, so silver as to be almost transparent. A dragon. A noble species, and one that I had encountered only so many times in this strage and wonderful world. The strongest magical creatures in the world; they were massive, rare, and held a power as terrible as that of a god. Fear and awe began to bloom in the deepest part of my chest.

Akira: (A dragon… That's so cool…)

I felt a surge of emotion welling up in my heart at being faced with a real dragon, probably as much as Mithra did with his brightly shining eyes.

Mithra: Could you turn back into a dragon for a little bit?

Hwylryn: You wanna see that?

Mithra: Absolutely.

Hwylryn: Do you wanna see it too, Akira?

Akira: Absolutely!

Hwylryn: Well now, what should I do?

Hwylryn was teasing us with a grin, keeping us in suspense. Mithra started pestering him for it, a big, radiant smile on his face.

Mithra: Please turn back into a dragon. And then let's try to kill each other.

Akira: W-wait… Let's not have any killing each other.

Hwylryn: You sure seem proud of yourself, wizard of the North, Mithra. But you're no match for me. Gwawlyn let the blood rush to his head and that led to him falling for the twins' plot and his subsequent death…

Akira: (The twins' plot?) (Hwylryn said he and Gwawlyn were twins, but…) (Surely the people who killed his brother weren't also twins…?)

Hwylryn: But I am more delicate and cautious than he. I won't be so careless.

Mithra: That's just fine. Let's just get on with it already.

Mithra tossed his crystal skull into the air. Hwylryn shrugged his shoulders, looking amused, and then wrapped his arms around my waist. He lifted me up with almost no effort at all, as if I were a toddler he was playing a game with.

Akira: Huh…wai--

Hwylryn: Akira, which do you like better, sharks or seafoam?

Akira: Sharks or seafoam?! I-I'd prefer having some time to think that over, but I guess seafoam…?

Hwylryn: Sounds good.

NARUTOP99 was a worldwide poll to determine the most popular character of the original Naruto manga. From December 17, 2022 through January 31, 2023, fans of the series could vote once per day for one of 488 possible characters. The results were announced in April 2023. A special manga omake featuring the most popular character, illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto, will be released at a later date.

The 488 candidates are seemingly compiled from the four supplementary databooks: Rin no Sho, Tō no Sho, Sha no Sho, and Jin no Sho. As such, characters that were not featured in any of the databooks, notably Boruto Uzumaki and his age group, are not included. This also means that some characters are listed twice, notably "Tobi" and "Obito Uchiha".

gundam IBO aka my problems with mari okada

i finished gundam IBO, tried to figure out why it felt so wrong, and only afterwards found out it was written by mari okada and honestly that explains so much.

if she somehow reads this post i’m sorry but here is my thesis about mari okada: all of her works have the same two problems:

1 - they set up a situation that will pull on your heartstrings, but then pull so much harder than was narratively justified that it breaks immersion and ruins the impact

2 - they have weirdly-romanticized ideas about romance, basically where a character falls for some idea that a person represents rather than the person themself, while also usually either (a) being heteronormative and/or steeped in tropey gender roles (b) ignoring perfectly good (less idolizing) chemistry between a different pairing

spoiler zone under the cut.

first of all, disclaimer: the other okada works i’ve seen that i’m comparing to are anohana, nakitai neko, maquia, and toradora. i found the first two to be insufferable, textbook examples of both problems. i liked maquia because i think it got the heartstring pull right, perhaps as a fluke, and avoided problem 2 by being about motherhood instead of romance. i tolerate toradora because, despite the annoying harem, it at least subverted problem 2 in the end by ending with the pairing that has actual chemistry.

IBO, i also find to be textbook examples of both problems, and both problems boil down to the fact that the show never really graduates from the toxic orga-mika-flashback ideology (”keep fighting until we reach the promised land“)

problem 1 basically comes down to how dark the ending is, how much they all lose in the end. the show presents an oppressive system - not just evil individuals - and so many ways our protags could have beat that system, but ultimately makes each one fail either through chance or through character flaw, and like, that’s not just crushing as a story beat, that’s crushing on the meta level of what makes a good story. the show could have been about cashing out with a peaceful life (i.e. not pursue the “king of mars” dream), but no. the show could have been about refusing to let the ends justify the means (i.e. refuse to partner with char chocolate mcgillis), but no. the show could have been about political reform and postwar quality of life (i.e. give any screentime to kudelia’s s2 business exploits), but no. in each case the orga-mika ideology blinded them to everything but to fight. the show set up from the very beginning to have them outgrow that ideology, and then spectacularly failed to deliver.

back on the object level, a more obvious example of problem 1 is just the string of named character killings. in season 1, biscuit’s death had meaningful narrative consequences. in season 2, i predicted naze would die after being politically maneuvered into some corner, which would have been narratively satisfying... if they payoff had been anything other than “now more characters will die with increasingly little justification”. we get the same exact story beat with takaki/aston, with akihiro/lafter, with yamagi/shino, and ultimately with orga. i’m not saying “war produces senseless deaths en masse” is a bad moral, i’m saying that repeating the same exact setup four times robs that moral of its emotional impact.

anyways, on to problem 2: atra and kudelia.

i should be happy about our girls getting a happy end where they’re literally married! i really should! the thing is..! the whole framing around it is stained with authorial intent so deeply that even this literal gay marriage is somehow heteronormative.

in short: the on-screen pretense of their relationship dramatically fails the bechdel test. (whatever happens off screen, the camera lens matters.)

in long: atra and kudelia explicitly talk about their respective relationships to mikazuki in that exact mari-okada-weirdly-romanticized way (”when a girl is crying, a boy should console her”), whereas their relationship to each other is, while obvious, unstated so explicitly as that, and i think that - because of okada’s track record - you need to do some heavy death-of-the-author-ing if you want to claim that they, in character, realize they have romantic chemistry on their own. moreover, as i wrote before i saw s2:

when she was jealous of kudelia about mikazuki, and then all it took was 1 poly adult role model to instantly break her out of that, was such a moment. i hope she meets a gay person and has the same moment again and then (becomes an adult and then) they date

...this of course never happens(*), and so, literally married as they are, occam’s razor says that in character, the only role model they have remains naze’s harem, where women can only be connected romantically indirectly via a guy -- in their case, the memory of a deceased emotional blank slate of a guy, as newly embodied in akatsuki -- and thus they are together because that indirection makes them platonic family (which is a powerful theme of the show in its own right, so it naturally completes the logic here).

(*worse yet: the only on-screen-text-canon gay character, yamagi, is heavily tokenized and brutally bury-your-gays-ed, and i find this actively harms the case, because it sets the precedent that if it was gay, they could have been explicit about it.)

if okada sensei had just spent 5 seconds of screen time for one of them to say “you know, what we have with each other is also romantic, isn’t it”, it would have been an amazing subversion of her own trope, but no. i can’t ignore the author here even if, underneath the metatext, their chemistry and their happy end are undeniable.

and that, i suppose, is why i am so eager about witch from mercury, even if its politics are even more incoherent than ever. it at least gives us - not just the queerness - but the queer-normativity we deserve in storytelling.

Names in droners

I have been thinking about it for a while.

Usually, when we have different cultures in fiction, each one has different names for it's characters and I think it's so cool! It adds to the lore and makes the world more coherent

We have people that are from different islands and each island acts as its own little society, as far as I understand.

We know about Nui, Mouse, Enki and Corto are form this Island. Enki and Corto, as names, give us a general feel that Nui is it's own society. Their names are plain, short, simple and easy to say, but still creative and new. Oro also fits this vibe, altho he's aqua. Mouse is the only one that isn't really fitting, however she is a shorescrubber, so technically it makes sense that her name is different.

Then we have the Tao Twins, Sun and Monk, and ofc their genie, Lotus. I thought for a while that they were based off the Tao people of Taiwan, hence the name, but Sun wears a bindi so I'm more convinced that these characters were based off of cultures of Indian subcontinent. They names aren't really that creative, but they also give off the general feel of their culture - they are peacefull and very spiritual.

Pirates are shorescrubbers, we have Max, Shark and Ed. Mouse fits in this lineup too, these names are also simple but much more common. Also, Mouse and Shark are named after animals, so there is a pattern here.

The Bees - Flora, Fuzz and Buzz. They are from an Island that thrives on beekeeping, and their names make perfect sense in that context.

The only ones I can't figure out are the Cold Kings. We have Manta, Shino and Pavel. I can't figure out any pattern here and I'm confused by it soooo much? Why Pavel? What's up with their names? I can't wrap my head around it

"Hosshi!"

"There, there, Hosshi. Have some konpeito." Hachi, with a bandage wrapped around his head, held out some sugary konpeito which Hosshi gladly chowed down on. "Eat up now!"

Joker watched them from the sofa. As far as he could piece together, Hachi had hit his head and passed out while Joker was absent. His external injuries seemed to be limited to a large bump on his head.

But internally, it seemed there was something more seriously wrong with Hachi...

Hachi turned and addressed him, "I still don't know who you are, but thank you very much for giving me first aid." Hachi gave a very polite thank-you, which was quite in line for him — except for the part about not knowing who Joker was.

Joker asked with trepidation, "Hey Hachi, you're joking, right?"

"What's this about?" Hachi replied in confusion.

"Well, I mean... you do know who I am, don't you? You're just acting like this 'cause you're still angry about that teacup, yeah?"

"...I'm sorry. I really don't remember," Hachi quietly apologized.

Joker changed his question. "What's your name?"

"Fuuma Hachi."

"Where were you born?"

"The Fuuma ninja village."

"Any siblings?"

"I'm the eighth of ten children. In order, there's Taro, Jiro, Saburo, Shino, Goro, Rokusuke, Nanasuke... then there's me, and Kurumi and Ichimaru are my younger siblings."

"Your hobbies?"

"Cooking, cleaning, and all other household chores."

"Your favorite artist?"

"The Shuffle Sisters, of course! I'm a fan of Ai-chan!"

"Your favorite author."

"Spade King!"

"What's my name?"

"I don't know."

"Why not!?" Joker blurted out, eyes focused on Hachi. But Hachi just hung his head apologetically. Hachi definitely wasn't the type to lie so blatantly. It didn't seem like he was teasing him or playing dumb on purpose. It must've been from when he hit his head...

"You're sure you don't remember me at all? Not even a little bit? You don't know Phantom Thief Joker-"

The moment the words were out of Joker's mouth, Hachi's expression tightened. He glared at Joker with a sharp glint in his eyes. "Phantom Thief Joker!" Hachi shouted loudly.

"H-Hey..." Seeing how worked up Hachi was, Joker flinched for a second.

"I know that name!"

"Huh?"

"Phantom Thief Joker...! When I heard that name, anger suddenly swelled up in my mind! I remember that person did something awful to me!" Hachi stood menacingly with his fists clenched tightly at his side. "That's a name I couldn't forget if I tried! I'll never ever forgive Phantom Thief Joker! I have to take revenge on him at all costs!"

"Eh... um... uhhhh..."

"As it happens, you just brought up his name! Are you Phantom Thief Joker!?"

"Eh? Well, uhhh..." The gears in Joker's brain turned as fast as they could. Then he caught sight of his own clothes and threw out, "Uh, no, I'm... not Joker! My name is Kaitou Joe." Joker used the same name he just used on stage. Luckily, he was still wearing the costume too.

"...Joe-san?" Hachi asked inquisitively.

Joker responded without delay. "Yeah, that's me! I'm Kaitou Joe, and I travel around the world on this airship! I'm kind of a globetrotter! I go where I please, wherever the wind takes me!"

Hachi's eyes softened, and he bowed his head. "Oh, I see. I apologize for accusing you of being Phantom Thief Joker without knowing anything. That makes more sense. You were kind enough to treat my wound, Joe-san, so you couldn't possibly be that cold-blooded scoundrel Phantom Thief Joker."

"Say that again!? Who are you calling a scoundrel!?" Joker bent forward without thinking.

"Huh?"

"Uh, nothing, er... you shouldn't insult people like that," Joker quickly covered up.

"Oh, excuse me. Yes, you're right, Joe-san."

"Sure..." Joker said, leaning back into the couch. An awkward silence ensued. Both of them were trying to figure out what to say to each other. The living room was silent except for the sound of Hosshi chewing on konpeito.

Hachi opened his mouth. "All right, Joker-san. I have to leave now."

"Huh? Where are you going?" Joker asked in surprise.

"I get the feeling that I can't stay around here. Thanks to you reminding me, I figured out that my goal is to beat Phantom Thief Joker. So I'm going to head out and look for Joker!"

"Eh? No, wait, instead...!" Joker bent forward again in a sweat. "How about you stay here instead? You can travel with me in this airship and search for Joker while you're at it!"

"What?"

"Besides, you're hurt. You shouldn't push yourself until you get better. Maybe you'll remember something else in the meantime."

He couldn't let Hachi go off on his own at this juncture. If he went out and found out that "Joe" was Joker, things would snowball. So it fell to Joker to figure out a way to restore Hachi's lost memories.

"But I couldn't possibly impose on you..."

"It's fine! C'mon, just stay here. Okay, Hachi?"

Hachi considered this for a while. Then he looked up at Joker with shiny golden eyes. "All right! I'll take you up on your offer for now. Thank you, Joe-san!"

When Joker woke up the next day, a wonderful smell drifted past his nose. It was the delectable scent of toast and ham and egg and sausage; one of Hachi's usual breakfast menus.

"Hachi!"

Joker jumped out of bed and rushed to the breakfast table. He nearly put on his usual red suit before hurriedly switching to "Kaitou Joe"'s outfit. The chic look just wasn't his style.

When he entered the living room, Hachi spoke to him with that same old smile. "Good morning, Joe-san."

"Oh... right... good morning."

"Since I'm intruding on your hospitality, I made breakfast."

"Yeah, I can see..."

Hachi's memories still weren't back, it seemed. Joker sat down at the table and wolfed down breakfast with the usual gusto. It was the taste of Hachi's cooking, same as ever. The crispiness of the toast and firmness of the egg yolk was the same as ever too.

To the side, Hosshi was stuffing its cheeks with konpeito as if nothing was any different.

"Not a care in the world, huh, pseudocat...?" Joker mused. Meanwhile, Joker was on edge trying to keep his identity secret from Hachi.

"Well then, I'll join you too," said Hachi as he drew up a chair across from him and started to eat breakfast, as was his usual habit.

Everything was the same as normal. Except that Hachi, though he was right in front of Joker, didn't remember him at all...

Curious now, Joker asked, "Hachi, how's your injury healing?"

"The throbbing in my head's completely gone now. Thank you for that, Joker-san!" With the same beaming smile as ever, Hachi munched on his breakfast. "Oh yes, I did some investigation into Phantom Thief Joker."

"...!" Taken by surprise, Joker's utensils froze. "O-Oh really?"

"Yes. It appears that Phantom Thief Joker is an internationally-active thief. His manifold and elusive ways of showing up have given him the nickname of 'Miracle Maker'..."

"I do know that much." It was a weird feeling, hearing Hachi explain this.

"But somehow, I get the feeling that I know Joker. I've seen his face, of course, but I think I've already heard about the gum he uses, his trademark card techniques, and his other special tricks. I suppose I must've done research on my enemy..."

"Uh-huh..."

Well yeah, Joker thought to himself. Hachi was the one person who got to see Joker working up close and personal. It seemed that Hachi didn't remember that he'd been Joker's assistant, nor was he able to recognize the face of "Joe" as "Phantom Thief Joker". This is a real issue...

Joker crammed his mouth with a second piece of toast and swallowed it down. Then Hachi said to him, "By the way, I've had a lapse in memory like this before."

"Huh!? You what? Really!?" Joker was about to ask for more detail, but just then his phone rang. He glimpsed at the screen and saw the words "STUPID SPADE" displayed. That was what Joker had listed for his contact info.

Joker picked up his phone and answered, "Sup, this is Joker..." before catching himself. "Joe, can I help you?" he corrected.

The call automatically transferred to the tablet next to the table, and a camera feed switched on. The tablet screen showed a young man who looked puzzled by what Joker had called himself. "Do you have a moment?"

Phantom Thief Spade was the one on the other end of the line. He was a handsome youth with steadfast eyes and a shapely nose. His long dark blue hair flowed freely and was crowned by a yellow crest that tufted out at the top. Spade had been Joker's rival since they were kids.

"Uh, actually..." Joker was tongue-tied. If Spade somehow let slip that he was Phantom Thief Joker in front of Hachi, he'd be in big trouble. And he was pretty sure that Spade was going to talk about their mutual profession.

"Cutting to the chase, something surprising happened while I was on the job recently..." Spade started to talk without even waiting for a response from Joker.

Oh snap, if he keeps talking, I'm not gonna be able to keep my identity secret!

"Ah! Sorry, Spade! I've got something else to do right now. Seeya!"

"Huh? Wait, Jo-"

Before he could say the next syllable, Joker switched off the display.

Hachi asked in confusion, "Joe-san, are you sure?"

"Eh? Yeah, it's fine!"

"That was Phantom Thief Spade-san just now, wasn't it. I've met him more than a few times before."

"Huh? Oh really, you have?"

Apparently Hachi did remember Spade. Joker was a little mad that his memories of Spade were still quite intact, whereas his memories of Joker had been neatly excised.

"Sheesh, that's just perfect, isn't it..." Joker grumbled to himself. Just then, his phone rang again. He checked it and saw the words "SWORD-FOR-BRAINS QUEEN" on screen. The names he registered people under were very childish. "Not again..."

But if he didn't answer, she'd probably just keep calling. The tablet display came on. The girl who showed up on screen didn't even say hello before getting down to business. "Hey, can I talk to you, Jo-"

"OH HEY! Been a hot minute, Queen!" Joker frantically cut her off.

"Huh? It hasn't been that long, has it? You sure sound chipper."

Queen's eyes widened in surprise. She had beautiful blonde hair tied into two ponytails and a charming face, but contrary to appearances, she could be very rowdy.

Like Spade, Queen was a longtime affiliate of Joker. The three of them had trained under the same master, Phantom Thief Silver Heart, and learned the ABC's of thieving from him. Queen still lived with Silver Heart as his granddaughter.

"I need to talk to you about something. On my last job, I ran across this one phantom thief. There was something really weird about him."

"Oh, really." Joker's mind was elsewhere, and he already had the urge to hang up.

"So about this weird guy... hey, are you paying attention to me, Jo-"

"NOOOPE nope nope! I have no clue!" Joker drowned her out as fast as he could. Why was it that they picked today of all days to call him by name!? Talking to them right now really was a bad idea. "I'm busy right now! Talk to ya later!"

"Hey, wait-" But before Queen could finish, Joker turned off the display again.

Hachi, right in front of him, was confused. "Joe-san, you're busy?"

"W-Well, I'm eating the breakfast you made right now, aren't I? I'm the type to focus on my meals and eat them respectfully!" This was hardly something Joker would have said yesterday when he was gaming and munching on a fillet at the same time. If he'd had this attitude then, none of this would be happening right now.

"Ha ha, a compliment like that makes all the effort of making it worthwhile." Hachi smiled. "I suppose Queen-san just had bad timing too."

Apparently he still remembered Queen, too.

"You seem to have a lot of thief friends, Joe-san. I wonder about that weird phantom thief that Queen-san mentioned."

"Ha ha, I guess I do." Joker laughed hollowly and sighed. If he didn't restore Hachi's memories quick, he wouldn't be able to talk with Spade and Queen normally, and more importantly, he wouldn't be able to do any capers.

Joker asked Hachi, "Hey. You said something about having a memory lapse before, right?"

"Yes. I hit my head one time and got amnesia."

"What!? Really?"

"I think I just must've hit the wrong spot. But I got help and went back to normal that time..."

"You got help!? From who?" Joker impatiently leaned forward. If they used the same method, Hachi's memories might be restored.

"Umm... If I remember correctly, the person who helped me was..." Hachi traced back his fuzzy memories and at last exclaimed, "That's right, it was Hyakkimaru-san!"

Why I like Manta so much

1.The reason I love this character so much isn’t jsut because of his deisgn which does help but the main reason why I love him so much is bc of his writing and story.First of all,Manta is established as a mean bully and a jerk in the first eps we see him in as he is often bullying others,however,despite that he still has one person he keeps close,which is Shino,his teammate and most probably only friend since who would wanna be friends with such a jerk,right?Here comes the catch,in the episode titles “The Polaris predicament” we get introduced to a shorescrubber from Polaris,Pavel,who we also find out was Manta’s superior at the Polaris academy,and that Manta was his lackey.Due to his interactions with Manta we can see that he wasn’t such a nice guy to him,in fact,he was a bully who constantly bullied Manta.We can even see in the same ep how Manga,who is usually stubborn and mean to everyone,going as far as to call Wyatt “bro” in an ep,and even disrespect him(most probably knowing Manta),BUT when Pavel is being mean to Manta,he doesn’t talk back,he just accepts it.That’s the first time we see more of Manta rather than him being just a mean bully to everyone.Knowing that he’s a victim of bullying,we can fairly say that the constant bullying he got from pavel didn’t do well to him,in fact,it made him become a bully himself.Despite that,he’s still not as mean to Shino as he is to everyone else,which,I could go on another rant just about them but I won’t do it(yet).We know that Shino also went to the academy,and that he also knows pavel,due to pavel asking him to be HIS mechanic and engineer(basically telling Shino to leave Manta,which tbh,kind of manipulating)We see Shino being hesitant to talk to pavel,which tells us despite most probably not enduring the same amount of bullying Manta got from Pavel,he still fears Pavel a little,saying yes,but being hesitant to do so.When Manta comes back,Pavel straight up tells Manta that he should pack his things bc he’s sending him back to Polaris,and he also says this exact thing “won’t you congratulate Shino?” Before he turns Shino’s chair so he could face Manta,we notice the way Shino looks down with full on fucking guilt on his face bc obv he didn’t wanna abandon Manta,but,he didn’t really have a choice.In the next scenes,we get to notice how Corto,tries to help Manta get rid of pavel(send him back to Polaris so Manta could keep being the pilot for the cold kings)however Manta tells Corto that he can’t “disobey academy rules”,we also see that in a scene where Corto asks Shino why didn’t anyone stop pavel from bullying Manta,Shino tells her that “everyone obeys the trainer,no mater how hard it is” Which…..EXCUSE ME???EVERYONE OBEYS THE TRAINER NO MATTER HIW HARD IT IS???SHINO JUST BASICALLY FUCKING TOLD US RHE ACADEMY IS FUCKING ABUSIVE

Anyway,we learn from the Polaris predicament ep that Manta’s bullying is all a TRAUMA RESPONSE SINCE HE WAS BULLIED(constantly may I add).All Manta knows is that since no one stopped Pavel,why would anyone stop him from being a bully?His mentality is fucked up bc of the trauma pavel gave him,he doesn’t know any better,he’s 15,he needs an adult to teach him what’s right and wrong,not to mention that Wyatt and Neptune,the only adults on the island do literally nothing to help Manta become a better person,all they do is criticize him,LIKE BRO IF U SEE THE GUY HAS ISSUES TRY AND HELP HIM OR SMT IDK DONT JUST CRITICIZE HIM ALL DAY TRY AND EXPLAIN TO HIM TRY AND TEACH HIM TRY AND MAKE HIM REALIZE HIS MISTAKES!!!
