ryan exists less as a character and more as a narrative device to cause butcher and homelander angst so he obviously he couldn't have been allowed to consider mallory a viable choice for a parental figure. but i'm kind of obsessed with the idea that even after living with her in a safe and stable environment for a year, it took him a one-min conversation with his teetering-on-the-edge-of-insanity father to leave mallory and run back to him. of course homelander offered assurance at a time when ryan really, really needed it, but also -- considering what we know about mallory and her grandkids, i'm sure she viewed ryan as a chance at redemption and made a genuine effort with him. i'm certain she would have validated that he wasn't responsible for becca's death. and he still preferred butcher or homelander's company when literally no one has ever enjoyed hanging out with either of those two men before. ryan said aunt grace had bad vibes and was simply unpleasant to be around
