[ad_1] Newport Beach is a popular destination for all ages, offering the best of California weather, beaches, dining, water sports, and family fun. This Southern California coastal town is known for its large harbor, ten miles of beaches, excellent whale-watching opportunities, and local craft beers. In addition, the annual international yacht race, the Ensenada International Yacht Race, brings in scores of visitors every spring. The quaint harborside community of Balboa Island is also quite a draw with its boutique shops, restaurants, and water sports rentals. One of the best experiences in the coastal city of Newport Beach is taking one of the many whale-watching excursions, where you can witness the magic of giant blue whales, humpback whales, or grey whales. During your whale-watching trip, you can also see dolphins and other marine life. You’ll also find Newport Beach to be a food, art, shopping, environmental, and cultural hub, with the Orange County Museum of Art, the Environmental Nature Center, Fashion Island, and the Sherman Library and Gardens. Whether you’re visiting this coastal city for business or pleasure, there are endless things to do. Keep reading to find our top picks for this Pacific Southwest destination! TL;DR Most significant landmark – The Wedge Best park – Inspiration Point Park Best free activity – Crystal Cove State Park Best activity for kids – Balboa Fun Zone Best activity for adults – Newport Landing Whale Watching Best food – Crystal Cove Shake Shack Best nightlife – Billy’s At The Beach Best all-around accommodation – Lido House Fun & Best Things to Do in Newport Beach, California 1. Newport Landing Whale Watching Kim Magaraci / ViaTravelers Address: 309 Palm St A, Newport Beach, CA 92661 You can’t visit Newport Beach, California, without booking a whale-watching excursion! These tours are plentiful, from private tours to luxury catamaran cruises. While the most common whales are grey and blue, you may also stumble upon killer whales during your whale-watching tour. There are whale-watching trips offered daily and year-round, so no matter when you visit Newport Beach, you’ll have an opportunity to see whales. If you’re hoping to see grey whales, you’ll want to book a trip from December through April, whereas blue whales (along with killer whales, dolphins, and other mammals) are most commonly seen from May through November. Whether you’re visiting Newport Beach, California, with a group or as a couple, a Newport Landing Whale Watching experience is a must-do! Book the Newport Beach Whale and Dolphin Watching Cruise or a more upscale experience with the Luxury Whale Watching Catamaran Cruise. Whichever you do, you’re sure to have a “killer” time (yes, we did that). Before or after your tour, stop at the Newport Landing Restaurant for a delicious seafood treat! You can also stay at the nearby Balboa Inn, On The Beach At Newport for your Newport Beach whale-watching experience! Or Doryman’s Oceanfront Inn might be the Victorian-style hotel you’re craving for a more upscale stay. See Related: Fun & Best Things to Do in Visalia, California 2. Spend the Day at Crystal Cove State Park Kim Magaraci / ViaTravelers Address: 8471 N Coast Hwy, Laguna Beach, CA 92651 Located just south of Newport Beach near Laguna Beach, Crystal Cove State Park is one of California’s most beautiful state parks. It’s worth the trip to this beautiful park with its three miles of Pacific coastline, historic beach houses, and inland chaparral canyons. Crystal Cove State Park perfectly combines the natural seashore and open space. Although it’s right off the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), the wooded canyons make you feel like you’re worlds away. You’ll find sandy beaches and rolling surf here, making it a perfect daytime attraction. If you’d rather have a pillow and comfy bed (rather than a campground experience), you can lay your head down at the nearby Newport Beach Marriott Bayview.
The lobby bar and onsite restaurant make it a perfect choice to settle down after a day at Crystal Cove State Park. If you’re driving to the park in the morning, you’ll notice a long line of cars on the PCH at a tiny restaurant called the Crystal Cove Shake Shack. The Shack is a great spot to grab breakfast or lunch with a stunning view of the beach and ocean. 3. Admire the Surfers at the Wedge Kim Magaraci / ViaTravelers Address: 2054 E Oceanfront, Newport Beach, CA 92661 Whether you’re ready to hang ten or if you’d rather watch more experienced surfers hang ten, the Wedge is the spot to go. Located on the southeast end of the Balboa Peninsula, the Wedge has powerful surf and big swells perfect for bodysurfing, bodyboarding, and surfing. If you’re a beginner, it’s best to let the experts ride these waves, as they can get up to 30 feet. This Newport Beach, California, spot is not for the faint of heart! There are also beautiful oceanfront homes at the beach worthy of admiration. Many visitors like to sit on the jetty and watch the sunset across the Pacific Ocean while the boats come in and out of the harbor. And if you’d rather watch from afar (like from a helicopter), this Newport Beach tour is the bee’s knees! Not only can you see the Wedge from the helicopter, but you can also see other prominent Newport Beach attractions on the Balboa Peninsula. Whether you choose the helicopter tour or not, the Lido House is a perfect place to stay on the Balboa Peninsula, giving you access to the Wedge and everything else the area provides. See Related: Fun & Best Things to Do in Merced, California 4. Explore the Newport Harbor Kim Magaraci / ViaTravelers Address: 1600 W Balboa Boulevard, Newport Beach, CA 92663 Newport Harbor is one of the highlights of Newport Beach, California, with its activities from sunset cruises to fishing and stand-up paddleboarding. There are just over ten short piers where fishing is allowed without a license. You can find all types of bass fish, halibut, white seabass, small sharks, and giant bat rays. Dining in Newport Harbor is drool-worthy, with some of the best seafood restaurants in California. While Nobu may be an international chain, it’s still one of the best sushi restaurants in the state. And if you’re looking for other restaurants in the harbor, Javiers and The Winery are two very popular upscale restaurants. If you prefer a guided experience, you can see Newport Beach’s top attractions, including waterfront mansions, with this private 2-hour Newport Beach cruise. There are many options for accommodations in the area, so if you’d rather dock your boat and walk to your hotel, check out the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach. 5. Go Shopping at Fashion Island and Lido Marina Village If you’re in the mood to shop, you must put Fashion Island on your travel itinerary. This outdoor shopping mall is for high-end shopping, including stores such as Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdale’s. Opened in 1967, Fashion Island is a relaxed yet sophisticated spot for shopping with views of the Pacific Ocean. If you still have more shopping on your list, head to Lido Marina Village, a stylish waterfront shopping center with boutiques, restaurants, and cafes. Many of the restaurants offer al fresco and dockside dining. After dining in the California sunshine, head to Billy’s At The Beach for the best Mai Tais in town. These Newport Beach, California, shopping areas offer the best of California shopping, with large anchor stores and small boutique shops. 6. Visit the Balboa Pier and Balboa Fun Zone Kim Magaraci / ViaTravelers Address: 1 Balboa Pier, Newport Beach, CA 92661 Most people are familiar with the Balboa Pier because of the Balboa Fun Zone just in front of it. This local attraction brings in roughly seven million visitors annually and offers affordable fun for all ages. This vintage amusement park has been open since 1936, offering Ferris wheel
rides, arcade games, and more! Unlike most beachfront amusement parks, there is no admission fee to enter, so you can wander around the Newport Beach boardwalk, watch the sea lions, go shopping, or grab a bite to eat. The pier is popular for fishing, but most people stroll on the Balboa Pier to see the surfers or head to Ruby’s Diner at the end. The old-timey casual atmosphere with vinyl booths and soda fountains make Ruby’s Diner a California favorite. They offer delicious staples such as hamburgers, fries, and shakes, the perfect way to end your day at Newport Beach. A stroll down the Balboa Pier and to the Balboa Fun Zone is easily one of the best things to do in Newport Beach, CA! See Related: Fun & Best Things to Do in Pleasanton, California 7. Ride the Balboa Island Ferry Kim Magaraci / ViaTravelers Address: 510 Palm St, Newport Beach, CA 92661 If you’re heading to Balboa Island, the Balboa Island Ferry is the easiest way to get there. This ferry service shuttles visitors from the Balboa Peninsula at Newport Beach to Balboa Island. Since it’s less than 1,000 feet between the island and the Balboa Peninsula, the ferry ride is only about five minutes. While each ferry can hold two cars, they also offer service for pedestrians and cyclists. The Balboa Island Ferry is the easiest and most scenic route to Balboa Island. They are open 365 days a year, only stopping service between midnight and 6 am. Before hopping on the ferry, enjoy some grilled Atlantic salmon at Newport Landing Restaurant, serving visitors for over 30 years. This waterfront restaurant has an upscale casual vibe, with gorgeous views of Newport Harbor. 8. Visit Charming Balboa Island Kim Magaraci / ViaTravelers Address: Newport Beach, CA Balboa Island is a harborside community, part of Newport Beach, and is accessible via boat docks, the Balboa Ferry, and the bridge. Once you get to the island, a wonderful boardwalk surrounds the city. The island is known for its eclectic atmosphere, stunning sunsets, and beautiful marinas. The island comprises two land masses: one is almost one mile around and the other almost two miles. However, a sidewalk surrounds both land masses, making them appear like one body. The small island is home to the Balboa Island Museum and Historical Society, which highlights the local history and culture of Balboa Island. The Balboa Island Museum also helps local artists with exhibits and merchandise to support their work. Kim Magaraci / ViaTravelers Fans of Arrested Development may recognize a few sights on the island. The show was set in Newport Beach, and the Bluth Family Banana Stand was inspired by two real-life frozen banana stands right next to each other on Marine Avenue. Sugar ‘n Spice and Dad’s Frozen Bananas both claim to be the origin of these tasty treats. Try one from both places and see which you prefer! If you want to explore the island, head down Marine Avenue for all the best restaurants and shops. However, one of the best ways to experience the eclectic restaurants on the island is with the Best Bites of Balboa Island Food Tour. This three-hour tour will give you a sample of six restaurants on Balboa Island! See Related: Fun & Best Things to Do in Big Sur, California 9. This 30-acre park, established in 1947, is popular for its cliffside views, beautiful beaches, and outdoor showers. You can also spend time perusing the village shops! When the tide is low, you can find crabs, sea urchins, starfish, and sea anemones, among other small marine life. You can also spend your day swimming, surfing, fishing, or exploring the sandy beach. While it is a popular spot, the rocky cliffs make it feel more secluded. Parking is free, a huge bonus, but it’s sometimes hard to find a parking spot.
Corona del Mar State Beach is easily one of the best free things to do in Newport Beach, California. 10. Stroll on the Newport Beach Pier kan_khampanya / Shutterstock Address: 1 Newport Pier, Newport Beach, CA 92663 Formerly known as the McFadden Wharf, the Newport Beach Pier is one of two prominent piers in Newport Beach. This pier is registered as a California Historical Landmark and is just over 1,000 feet long. This wooden pier is known for the dory boats bringing in their fresh catches and selling them at the Dory Fleet Fish Market. Visitors can stroll the Newport Beach Pier or ride bikes or roller skates. You can also look at all the homes on the boardwalk, many of which are available for vacation rentals. While there used to be a sushi restaurant at the end of the pier, no restaurants have taken over its space. The beach at the base of the Newport Pier is soft sand, perfect for sunbathers and swimmers to enjoy year-round. Visitors will also notice the presence of seagulls and pelicans at the beach and pier. 11. Locals love this secluded spot because of the tide pools and rocky reefs that make this a diving destination. Because the beach is protected from large swells, it’s a perfect spot for families and beginner divers. Snorkelers love Little Corona Beach because of the eelgrass just beyond the water’s edge. St. Croix Day 14: Part 2
This morning, we were supposed to go to the botanical gardens, but unfortunately those plans changed. In lieu of the garden tour, we had class from 10-12, where we discussed policy and governmental action as it relates to sustainability. The class was really interesting & we had good discussions about current events like Ted Cruz being in St Croix and his involvement with the oil refinery.
After this, we decided to go to the beach for the day, and due to the high winds, looked to go to a beach on the southeast coast of the island so we wouldn’t be getting sprayed by sand. The drive out and back from this beach showed us views of the island and the water that we previously had not seen.
At the beach, a few people went snorkeling and said that they could see some rocks but that they didn’t see a ton in the water. I read a bunch of my book that I brought with me from my hometown library and relaxed on the beach.
Once done at the beach, we came back to the hotel where I heated some tacos I had made previously to eat for dinner, worked out on our porch, showered, and relaxed with my roommates before bed.
Something we definitely noticed through our drive to the beach and back were how nice the homes were in this area, and how the nice homes often times were outfitted with solar panels. This ties in with the discussions we’ve been having about clean energy on the island and how there’s the beginnings of an environmental justice issue in how upper class individuals can avoid expensive power bills on the island by adding solar panels, and this leaves the other lower classes to bear the weight of the costs of power, often resulting in even more expensive electric bills.

Ranbutler headcanons because I miss him and think about him a lot
I’ve already said some of these before, but I’ve been thinking about him a lot and want to share more about him in general, so here you go.
- Butler’s name is Moon, pronouns he/they, and before he was Sir Billiam’s butler, he lived in the wild west town. He was John John the bartender’s younger brother, the small child who’d help his big brother out around the bar and hold up the cue cards for Karaoke. He was quiet as a child, quieter than he is now, but one thing that has remained the same is his curiosity.
- Moon is about seventeen years old in The Masquerade episode, and their birthday is February 4th. (They don’t know if that’s their birthday or not, but it’s what John always told them.)
- Befriended Crops somehow. The cannibal was one of the few people the kid would actually talk to, and the kid was also one of the man’s few visitors. He liked that kid a lot, actually. Always looked out for him. (He really did adore that kid- Crops always had a soft spot for kids, despite the rumors saying otherwise. Sherman this, it’s why he allowed Moon to be near him in the first place. They both really, really cared about Moon, and John.)
- Appearance wise, Moon looks human, for the most part. He’s very tall, about 6′6″ and very thin, a bit underweight for his height but nothing too serious. He has fluffy dark brown hair, gray eyes, and is very pale. He has scars, quite a few of them, but most are hidden by his clothes. As for the ones on his face, those are very faded for the most part and usually hidden by makeup anyway, especially when he knows that he’ll be around people other than Billiam and Hubert. (The scars from eggvines are similar to Billiam’s own scars, as well as Hubert’s. They do not discuss it.)
- He likes the smell of lavender, vanilla, and candles, he finds them soothing.
- He knows how to play the piano and read music, was taught by John after having begged him to teach him, and that knowledge was later expanded upon by Billiam. He likes playing the piano, it makes him happy and is something that he is proud of. Some of his favorite songs to play are the ones that John taught him, songs that he knows by heart. He may not have them down on paper, but he’ll always have them in his heart.
- Billiam is the one who taught him how to dance- to impress the other rich people, he said. He likes dancing, it’s fun. Helps in being graceful, too.
- He learned how to braid hair from Sherman- actually, he learned a lot about Piglin hair from Sherman. (It helped Billiam a lot actually. He was raised human in a family of humans, despite being part Piglin, and a lot of things he should’ve known are things he never learned until later, long after he had left that household.)
- His mask was given to him by Sir Billiam as a gift, and while it’s not the only mask Butler has, it is his favorite one. It was one of the first gifts Billiam ever gave him, aside from new clothes and some books. He also suspects the man may have even had the mask commissioned for him- the gold is certainly real, he realized that part pretty quickly. (Gold is so valuable, especially to Piglins.)
- Two of his favorite places in the mansion are the library and the garden, albeit the garden is technically outside.
- John and Sherman taught Moon how to read and write at a relatively early age, along with sign language. He likes to read, and as a kid he read any book that he could his hands on. Many times, Billiam has purchased new books with Moon in mind.
- If one were to talk to him about a subject he was particularly interested in- for example, Endermen- he will tell you everything about it until someone stops him. He’s ended up infodumping to Billiam many times, and every time, the man listens and occasionally asks him to explain something further. Moon’s eyes are always so bright when talking about the things he loves, and Billiam never did have the heart to shut him up.
- Green is his favorite color, and he likes alliums, as well as roses. Red is also a rather lovely color, and he is also partial to gold. Blue is also really pretty.
- Despite his earliest memories being of that town, Moon’s not originally from the wild west town, nor does he really remember anything about his life before that point, give how little he was when he was brought there. John’s the one who brought him there, actually, despite being barely more than a child himself. It was strange- despite being older, John also has no memory of their lives before that point.
- Moon is part Enderman, the only visible indicator of that heritage being his tall height of about 6′6″. He doesn’t like eye contact, and he is hurt by water, but only if it touches his skin- he can drink it without issue. Even so, he prefers milk and tea. He can also teleport, though not frequently or very far, and it exhausts him greatly if he pushes it too much. Though he doesn’t remember learning it, he can speak to other Endermen and understand them perfectly. (He remembers that John could do the same thing, and that it was John who taught him how to write in that language. He never did say how he learned it.)
- John, for many reasons, made it a habit to keep excessive amounts on milk on him at almost all times, and he passed that habit on to Moon. He’s also the one who taught him how to store that much milk in the first place. Don’t ask how.
- Moon is very observant and can read people like a book, and soft-spoken and shy though he may be, he can be as lethal with words as he is with a sword.
- He uses a lot of names. Usually, it’s Butler and his real name, Moon, but there are others. For instance: Theodore, Silo, Silas, Eli, Benjamin, Matthew, and Billy. That last one is always fun to use at parties. He uses either the surname “John” or Billiam’s last name.
- He likes green tea with milk, bread, chocolate, and pastries.
- Hubert is the one who taught him how to cook and bake, as well as other skills that a servant would have. He and Billiam were also the ones how taught him how to use a sword- he already knew how to use a crossbow, something that Billiam found out shortly after grabbing the kid. Fun time, truly.
- The horses like him a lot, and he likes them. He really bonded with the horse that Billiam was riding when he first met the man.
- He’s ambidextrous, and his handwriting is actually really pretty. He has a journal that he writes things in, to help keep track of everything.
- Billiam had no plans on kidnapping this kid, let alone keeping him, it all just kind of happened in the chaos. What ended up happening was this: “Look, I have a deal for you: You help me out for the next couple of robberies, and when I have what I need, I’ll give you a cut and then bring you back here, okay?” And Butler agreed. Long story short, things didn’t go to plan and Moon ended up staying far longer than either of them intended. Whoops.
- On rare occasions, purely for their own entertainment and to switch things up a bit, Moon and Billiam will switch roles for a party. The results are...interesting. They only do this when everyone there has absolutely no idea who they are.
- Moon can come up with a lie and an entire story on the spot. He’s also good at both being a distraction and at remaining undetected even when in plain sight. He learned that skill from Hubert- if there was one thing Hubert knew how to do, it was to how to be the ideal servant, especially in the eyes of those who consider servants to essentially be living furniture.
- The Egg is simply a fact of life at this point to Moon, albeit at times an absolutely terrifying one. This has all become very normal to him, and he has no real reason to oppose the Egg. However, there are still times when things get...complicated. (The Egg likes Butler a lot, maybe even favors him- it certainly favored him compared to the other servants who once also worked in Billiam’s household, short though that time was. It’s not something they talk about.)
- Hubert is the one who showed him how to get up on the roof, showed him the hidden passageways and taught him how to get into even the most difficult of spots. The man taught him so much...
- He used to sleepwalk, when he was a child. Especially after Billiam first brought him home. It’s gone away with time, for the most part. However, there are times when he’s woken up in places that are...not where he fell asleep at. (He’s woken up outside the Egg Room more than once, just outside the painting door. This always happens shortly before it’s time for another party.)
- He likes animals a lot, especially cats. Dogs and birds are nice too, but he prefers cats.
- Sometimes he sings. And a lot of the time, it’ll be old songs he remembers John singing.

Things:
Oliver and Lyaria have known each other for quite awhile, and she thinks of him somewhat as a mentor, as he took her under his wing when she was introduced to this world. Both have a lot of dirt on people, though they rarely make use of it, preferring to make fun of their dress or arrogance instead from the side.
Ranbob is a bit of a loner. This stems from the fact that he was born with a weak Pearl, that cracked the first, and last, time he ever attempted to teleport. If it ever broke, he’d suffer from Perma-death. Seeing as teleportation is more or less instinct, he was forced to learn how to show down his instincts and distant himself from them in order to avoid accidentally doing so. This has more or less made him seem odd to others, and he himself doesn’t understand how to react to some of their more instinct-driven gestures, having long since suppressed his own.
In other words, he has no idea what he’s doing. Luckily, there’s quite a few Enderman hybrid on the server that do.
The Tales character appear before Tommy visits the prison and dies. Because I would like to attempt to redeem Dream a tiny bit, and y’know, I don’t think you can really do that after he murders Tommy. So, that just never happens here.
Jackie’s father runs an old rickety inn called Bee ‘n Boo, which he intends to pass on to Jackie. However, Jackie’s passion has always been fighting, so, knowing his father would disprove, he fights in the Pit in secret.
Levi is a gardener who fights in the Pit to keep his skills sharp, as well as earn money when he’s not on the job. He’s got a special touch with plants, and quite the green thumb.
Genevieve is a professional fighter who originates from Subbin. Though she often returns, she spends more of her time outside of the empire, mastering new styles and honing her abilities. She’s also Jackie’s role model.
Ash and Zachary tend to unintentionally spook people a lot. They walk incredibly quietly, know a lot of scary stories, can tell when somebody is nearby, and occasionally talk in sync with no prior planning. Hilariously, Techno is probably the most weary of them.
They’re also both bat hybrids, though for most of the time, those traits remain dormant, so the most people notice is that they have really good hearing, not too great eye-sight, and pointed ears. They’ve also got little bat wings hidden under their jacket, but nobody really notices those. Under a lot of distress, their traits manifest more, typically rather violently.
Ranbob is also pretty short. He inherited more of his mother’s genes than his Enderman father, so though he has some Enderman traits, it’s not many.
He’s incredibly weak to water though. His mother was a third blaze, and both parents passed down that particular weakness, except doubled. He inherited both a fair amount of heat resistance, and his golden eye from her side.
Hubert is an old childhood friend of Billiam’s, and the two took in Moon when he ended up lost and injured nearby. They even helped him get home to his brother John John. Moon ultimately decided to continue working for Billiam, having grown close with them, though he keeps in contact with his brother.
