Songs of 2022
Year-end lists always seem doomed to become outdated. Am I really expected to have heard all the best songs of 2022 in 2022? It’s never going to work, they’ll seep through over the course of the following year or years. But giving it six weeks is better than nothing, so here we are in mid-late February.
1. Tomberlin, “Stoned”.
Stoned indeed: woozy, baffled, bodily undone.
2. Camp Cope, “Running with the Hurricane”.
Camp Cope perfected a bassy, blunt melancholy with How to Socialise & Make Friends; here they don’t so much break from that template as turn it to other—affirmative? aggressive?—purposes.
3. Caroline, “Good Morning (Red)”.
The year’s most something-new-on-every-listen song, its most capacious.
4. Christian Lee Hutson, “Age Difference”.
Lyric of the year: “Do my impression of John Malkovich critiquing food in prison / At first it isn’t funny, then it is, and then it isn’t.”
5. Big Thief, “Change”.
A panoply of possibilities on such a sprawling, immersive album by the absolute best in the game, but this most plaintive and stubborn lament just edges the rest.
6. Rachika Nayar ft. Maria BC, “Heaven Come Crashing”.
Sounds for the silentest disco.
7. The A’s, “Why I’m Grieving”.
A path not taken from an archive not delved-into; a peppy sad spurt of jolly heartbreak.
8. Black Country, New Road, “Snow Globes”.
I’m still not sure if this song’s about going mad, getting old, living through winter, all three, or none.
9. Arctic Monkeys, “Body Paint”.
Searching, insistent: like Alex Turner’s got you caught in a lie.
10. Stella Donnelly, “Cold”.
This could’ve been any of Stella Donnelly’s songs where the lilt of her voice is always dropping into conversationality, but this one, where she ends the conversation, full-stop, shuts me up the most.
11. Martha, “Irreversible Motion”.
So many of these songs are about little things, like the bones of the inner ear; this one maybe more than all the others.
12. Florist, “Red Bird Pt. 2 (Morning)”.
A delicate retrospective collage, a slow bashful loving appreciation, a puzzled amazed asking-why, a cautious comfort.
13. Aldous Harding, “Fever”.
Aldous Harding’s songs have this wonderful, dignified refusal to cohere; this one just lopes, or loafs, in and out of view.
14. Meg Baird, “Will You Follow Me Home?”.
The way Meg Baird’s vocals stay half-submerged here is what gets me: “Will You Follow Me Home?” goes from lazy river to maelstrom without you quite noticing.
15. Brian Eno, “Making Gardens Out of Silence”.
If you ask me, “Making Gardens Out of Silence” is a panorama from the time after humans, built from salvage by whatever-comes-next.
16. Hurray for the Riff Raff, “SAGA”.
A lot of these songs express a specifically 2022 kind of bafflement. “SAGA” doesn’t know how to get past this condition either, but it’s pushing against the boundaries.
17. Lana Del Rey, “Watercolor Eyes”.
You think you know someone’s schtick, but they surprise you.
18. Black Belt Eagle Scout, “My Blood Runs Through This Land".
Alternating between wordlessness and breathlessness, either way keeping on building to something.
19. Jake Xerxes Fussell, “Love Farewell”.
Stoic and stolid, Jake Xerxes Fussell bets on metaphor but could’ve made do with just rumble, growl and twinkle.
20. Ezra Furman, “Ally Sheedy in The Breakfast Club”.
Secret-telling in movie-theatre darkness.
21. Let’s Eat Grandma, “Happy New Year”.
Let’s Eat Grandma have the saddest synths but this one’s rose-coloured.
22. Joshua Burnside, “Louis Mercier”.
Time-travel klezmer-pop that jostles you like a cobbled towpath.
23. Beth Orton, “Weather Alive”.
When talking songs become singing songs so sylphlike and effortless.
24. Sault, “Life We Rent but Love Is Free”.
Sounds like certain small parts of London, for certain small moments, on busy summer days in the past.
25. Bill Callahan, “Coyotes”.
One for slickrock and sagebrush, which are not without their romance.
26. Yard Act, “Tall Poppies”.
A self-consciously small story, a kitchen-sink drama, a talking head, no denouément.
27. Angel Olsen, “All the Good Times”.
A rhinestone widescreen production, a road movie on a soundstage.
28. Beach House, “Hurts to Love”.
Generationally speaking, the ending of Skins series 1 still packs a fair bit of a punch, so rewriting “Wild World” by Cat Stevens makes more sense than you’d think.
29. The 1975, “The 1975”.
Imagine taking “All My Friends” and making it about your cock and it’s still good; that takes rare talent.
30. Craig Finn, “Birthdays”.
Comforting because it really is nice to know there’s someone in this world who’s always known you, and comforting because it’s Craig Finn doing Craig Finn stuff with his big dumb Craig Finn voice.
31. Julia Jacklin, “Lydia Wears a Cross”.
A bodily song: knees, eyes, clothes, adornments.
32. Anaïs Mitchell, “On Your Way (Felix Song)”.
You get the sense Anaïs Mitchell finds nothing all that difficult—eulogising, philosophising, doing justice to a life, picking out the pithiest reminiscences, in just under three minutes she bowls it all over.
33. Billy Woods, “Pollo Rico”.
Intrusive thoughts, compulsion to repeat. A personal history of madness.
34. Bright Eyes, “Arc of Time (Time Code) (Companion Version)”.
This year Bright Eyes re-recorded some of the songs from the 2000s I love/hate the most. “Arc of Time” gets remade without the beats or the keys, but stays smart and wry and death stays on its mind.
35. Fred again.., “Berwyn (all that i got is you)”.
Fred again..’s songs are urban explorations, entries to London’s subterrene.
36. Yeah Yeah Yeahs, “Spitting Off the Edge of the World”.
Cosmic.
37. The Big Moon, “Ladye Bay”.
Supersized, tectonic.
38. Drive-By Truckers, “The Driver”.
Grimy, grunting noir.
39. Ethel Cain, “American Teenager”.
D. H. Lawrence would’ve liked Ethel Cain and her Great American Hauntedness.
40. Girlpool, “Butterfly Bulletholes”.
Such a shame to lose Girlpool in 2022 but they were four or five bands in just two people, they gave us a lot.
41. The Beths, “Expert in a Dying Field”.
This one speaks for itself.
42. Nilüfer Yanya, “Shameless”.
Breathless, almost somehow fleshless, rattling ribcage xylophone.
43. Mesadorm, “Soap Opera”.
Skew-whiff boiler-hiss robot pop.
44. Porridge Radio, “Back to the Radio”.
Porridge Radio’s skills are in cacophony, cataclysm, crisis, ruination, disaster mismanagement.
45. Wet Leg, “Too Late Now”.
Every introspection needs a wise-crack or two.
46. Wilco, “Tired of Taking It Out on You”.
Aged 29, I had chickenpox recently; I recovered but it’s made looking in the mirror interesting, all these new small markings on the same face.
47. Plains, “Hurricane”.
The lyrics to “Hurricane” read like an apology, but Katie Crutchfield’s voice always sounds a little barbed to me; that’s what makes this work, I think.
48. Daniel Avery, “Higher”.
Frenetic travel in place.
49. Kevin Morby, “Bittersweet, TN”.
Kevin Morby hits all the requirements, he straight-A’s being a country singer.
50. Beabadoobee, “You’re Here That’s the Thing”.
In 2023 I resolve to continue to love silly rhymes, campfire rhythms, dewdrops and holding hands.

10 Songs 10 People Tag Game
I was tagged by the wonderful @jamieanovels! Thanks for the tag! The rules of the game are to list 10 songs, then tag 10 people to pass it on, with bonus points for song from a WIP or character playlist!
I’m going to shuffle the playlist for my main WIP, Crying Wolf, and share the first 10 songs, plus the reasons why they’re on the playlist because I want an excuse to talk about Crying Wolf. But, before that, the no pressure tags!
No pressure tags: @afoolandathief, @aohendo, @loopyhoopywrites, @worldstogetlostin, @whimsyqueen, and open tag!
Onto the songs!
1 - The Hearse by Matt Maeson
Added onto the playlist mainly for the chorus (”I will never go backwards, I will never be free, I will never be free when you sing down to me,”) vibes really well with the events of Crying Wolf. There’s a lot of running and a lot of escapes... “to something that is worse,” involved, as well as many points of no return just sort of leaped over without looking.
2 - March of the Ignorant by Crown the Empire
The themes of the song (zealousness, denial) fits the Order of Grav, a militaristic gravity worshipping cult in Crying Wolf, really well. Due to having a monopoly on pre/syn-apocalypse technology, this cult is heavily relied on by the government to deal with problems pertaining to run-ins with this technology. However, due to a combination of the Order fitting the BITE model in its structure as well as its reluctance to share what it has found with others, they have a lot of misconceptions about both the pre/syn-apocalypse technology and how the world works. The Order does more harm than good in their “crusade”.
3 - Diamonds and Rust by Judas Priest
This song fits the character Ogwut Izzdat! This is another one, where it’s on the playlist mainly for the chorus (”We both know what memories can bring, they bring diamonds and rust.”) Ogwut is a 10 ft tall robot who, at the beginning of the story, thinks he’s just a weird human. He learns that he is not human a few chapters into the story. A good portion of his character development deals with him reinterpreting his memories and coming to terms with what (and who) he is. I also intend to continue this character development when I get around to writing the sequel.
4 - Under the Milky Way by the Church
This song was one I liked to listen to while writing the calmer moments in Crying Wolf as well as doing some of the world building. The song has a sense of wonder to it which I like.
5 - Dream On by Aerosmith
Another song that fits Ogwut! The lyrics fit his character development quite well (e.g., “I know it's everybody's sin, you got to lose to know how to win, half my life's in books' written pages, storing facts learned from fools and from sages”), especially in regard to him wanting to do the right thing when faced with multiple... trolley problem-esque... situations, and his stubborn refusal to give up and hope for a better world.
6 - Heel Turn 2 by the Mountain Goats
Crying Wolf is about a revenge-cycle. This song (”You found my breaking point, congratulations, spent too much of my life now trying to play fair, throw my better self overboard, shoot at him when he comes up for air, come unhinged, get revenge.”) fits revenge-cycles really well!
7 - Pink Cloud Compression by Mister Heavenly
This song fits the character Claudine! She is the character that causes problems on purpose! Usually in an attempt to fix other problems. She is probably the most stubborn character in Crying Wolf and the song (”I see the madness brimming in your eyes, a child who's never been told no”)  fits that quite well.
8 - The Chain by Fleetwood Mac
Wotan has unrequited feelings for Theo and, despite loving Theo, disagrees with him on a few plot-important choices on a moral level. He loves some parts of Theo and hates other parts, and it stings all the more because Theo barely sees Wotan as a friend, let alone anything more. A break-up song seemed fitting for these two, though the song fits Wotan better than Theo.
9 - The Wolf by SIAMES
The song has wolf in the title and I really like it. That’s pretty much it. It’s a good song.
10 - Evil in Your Eye by the Church of the Cosmic Skull
I listened to the album this song comes from a lot while writing Crying Wolf. This song (”No one can save you, you're under their spell, no one can save you at all, no one can touch you and no one can see, no one can save you”)  fits a lot of the scenes quite well. The main characters often feel both helpless and alone, facing a villain that has power beyond their comprehension while others refuse to listen to their warnings let alone help. Sometime they do the opposite of helping and make things worse.

A3! Boys + My Stuffed Animals
Tumblr media
Spring Troupe:
Sakuya
Gabriel
Gabriel is a small elephant with big ears that constantly make him fall over. He has a pink bowtie that says 'I Love You'
Makes Saku feel safe and Gabriel is a reminder to himself that he's loved and appreciated by everyone at Mankai.
Named after a friend from theatre class :)
Masumi
George Washington
George Washington is a tiger. He is small, but his arms are like those slap bracelets so you can wear him on your wrist (or let him hang on the side of shelf like I do).
So I got Georgy-Boy for easter 2020. i asked my friends for name ideas. They sent me stuff like 'Stripes'. I went offline for a few minutes and when I came back online I told my friends his name was George Washington.
//////////
Me: tiger has a name now
Friend: which name did you choose?
Me: his name is George Washington.
Friend: what the fuck. how'd you get George Washington?
//////////
Pretty sure he got the name bc I was listening to the Hamilton soundtrack.
Citron
Daniel
Daniel is mostly pink but has other pastel colors that look like watercolors. He's a unicorn. And a ketchain. And he's one of those dream lites, so he lights up. (He's supposed too anyway, but he's never lit up since i got him like 7 years ago at a yard sale).
Named after Daniel Howell (formerly danisnotonfire) [YouTube]
Tsuzuru
Lucifer
Lucifer is a small panda pillow pet. Very easy to travel with bc he fits in most backpacks.
My mom told me she wanted me to have a stuffed animal with a biblical name, i picked him up, looked her in the eye and said "His name is Lucifer." My mom tried to protest. "You said a biblical name, Mom. Lucifer is in the bible."
Itaru
Pao(???)
Pao is a panda. They are also a phone holder thingy. Like it'll hold your phone if you're watching movies or whatever.
Like 5-ish years old. Got them from a friend. They have a tag with their name on it, but I read it once and then just called them "the panda" for some reason instead of their actual name and now the tag is too faded to read the name, but i am 38% sure it says Pao or something close to that.
Chikage
Tsuki
Tsuki is a dinosaur. Tsuki is a sparkly dino. He's green rn, but if you brush your hand over him, the sparkles turn over and he becomes orange. I like green tho bc his tummy and the bottom of his feet are orange and so are his eyes.
Named after Tsukishima Kei (Haikyuu)
Tumblr media
Summer Troupe:
Tenma
Hinata
Hinata is a narwhal. A bright orange narwhal. Infact he is the same color as Tenma's hair.
Named after Hinata Shoyo (Haikyuu) [bc its the same color as his hair. there is a theme with this narwhal and the anime boys i associate with them]
Yuki
Steve
Steve is a regular teddy bear, except he has a shirt that has pikachu on it. (the shirt was originally Tsuki's bc i got tsuki at a friends build a bear bday party, but it fits Steve better)
I just think Yuki would try new designs/color schemes/styles by making clothes for Steve to see how they look.
I got Steve from a claw machine (my bf at time won him for me just before we watched Endgame together.)
Named after Steve Rogers (Marvel)
Muku
Eeyore
Muku most definitely loves the Winnie the Pooh movies and I will fite for this hc. He gets my Eeyore. You know how Eeyore's tail is always going missing or falling off??? Eeyore's tail comes off (velcro) but its attached to his actual body with a string so it cant be misplaced.
Eeyore has a patch that says "official disney store" but i got him for $3 at a thrift store.
Misumi
Sherlock
Sherlock is a polar bear. Sherlock is very huggable. He makes Misumi feel safe. He has a hat and scarf (that don't come off. they are sewn on him)
the hat has a pom pom on top and the scarf has a pom pom on each end. the hat and scarf and the bottom of his feet have a blue/white plaid pattern.
Kazunari
Victor
Victor is a puppy and the first big stuffed animal of mine on the list! He's all tan and abt maybe 3-4 ft long. Victor lays pretty flat so he's comfy to lay/sit on. I think Kazu would like sitting or laying on him when drawing. Probably has him on his bed so he's like a giant pillow.
Victor is from Toys R Us. I got him last August-ish from my Aunt and Uncle who found him at a thrift store and thought I'd like him.
Named after Victor Nikiforov (Yuri On Ice)
Kumon
PJ
PJ is a small white tiger. He is also a ball. He can fit in one hand. When Kumon is thinking or stressed or bored (etc) he just lays on his back and tosses PJ up into the air.
When Kumon is laying on the floor tossing PJ, Misumi sits on the bed closest to where PJ is and tries to grab him (but only if Kumon is in a good mood and okay with it) It's a fun little game they made up they like to play.
Pretty sure he was named after KickthePJ (YouTube)
Tumblr media
liber pls give us a pic with all of autumn i am begging
Autumn Troupe:
Banri
Sammy
Sammy is another one of my large stuffed animals. He is also a puppy, but unlike Victor he is sitting instead of laying. He's abt 2-3 ft tall. His fur is the same color as Banri's hair. Great to squeeze at anytime, but very therapeutic when you're in a bad mood. Has a heart on his ear.
i got him abt 7 years ago. I had just finished spn season 2 and was upset abt the finale and had no way to start season 3.
Named after Sam Winchester
Juza
Tiggs
Tiggs is a beanie baby tiger. Tiggs is a little larger than PJ (and not a ball). He's a regular orange tiger instead of a white tiger like PJ. He'd buy Kumon PJ so they could have matching stuffed animals. Small and very comforting to just hold/hug.
Omi
Benedict (Ben)
Benedict, also known as Ben, is a small koala. Just a little bigger than Tiggs. He has a heart on one of his feet (i think the right one). very soft. very fluffy.
Named after Benedict Cumberbatch (Actor)
Taichi
Dean
Dean is my largest stuffed animal. He is a dark brown teddy bear that's abt 4-ish ft tall. He can be put in a corner and used as like a bean bag chair, or he can lay down flat and be a good pillow like Victor can.
It's very fun to just wrap around him and squeeze as tight as you can. Especially in when your in a bad mood. Very comforting to cry into.
I got him a couple years ago at a thrift store.
Named after Dean Winchester (Supernatural)
Sakyo
Lev
Lev is a lion abt the size of a regular teddy bear (maybe slightly larger). I got him a thrift store so he's slightly worn out from age. He's mostly a pastel dark yellow-ish tan and his mane is dark brown. very huggable.
He's the stuffed animal I sleep with. Smells nice all the time, like the fabric softener.
Named after Lev Haiba (Haikyuu)
Sakoda
Emotional Support Iron Man
So Iron Man is small and he sparkles. He will hurt you/someone if thrown hard enough. Sakoda likes heroes bc they remind him of Sakyo they look cool. I'd hc that he got Iron Man from Sakyo when he was younger and its one of his most valued possessions and goes everywhere with him (or stays with Azamo or Sakyo at the dorm. Maybe Izumi or a couple others are on the list of who can watch over Iron Man.) Very protective of it.
Got the emotional support part of his name from a friend.
She saw Eddie Redmayne on a movie cover (think it was The Danish Girl) and started freaking out bc she loved him. I handed her the Iron Man and the next day she thanked me and said he was an Emotional Support Iron Man and the name stayed.
Azami
[Emotional Support] Spooder-Mon
Sakoda knew Azami as a kid. He most definitely got him the Spider-Man so they could have matching plushies.
Spider-Man is square and has little blob hands doing the web thingy. The tag said travel pillow, but he probably just chills by Azami's bed. When needed, Iron Man will be placed next to him if Sakoda can't take Iron Man with him.
I brought him to school one day and we had a bio test and all the people sitting around me passed him around and gave him a pat for good luck. We all got good grades and then he was dubbed as Emotional Support Spooder-Mon, but the Emotional Support title isnt part of his name (unlike the Iron Man).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i wanted guy in the pic, but i also wanted tsumu and hiso in the pic so you get 2 pics for winter
Winter Troupe:
Tsumugi
Phil
Phil is a zebra. He is a pillow pet zebra. Like Lucifer, Phil is also easy travel size. The bottom half of Phil is pink, so I refer to him as my pink zebra.
I just think it'd be cute to have Tsumugi with a pillow pet ok. I also thought he'd probably have has Phil for many years (since he was a kid) and Tasuku most definitely brings up things from when they were kids and shit.
//////////
Tasuku: you chose the pink zebra, and for what???
Tsumugi: its a very aesthetically pleasing pastel pink.
Tasuku: THERE WAS A DOG PILLOW PET RIGHT THERE AND IT WAS CUTER
Tsumugi: dont talk bad abt Phil.
the rest of mankai: ????????
//////////
I got phil before I got Lucifer many years ago. He was old when i got him and he is very old now. I love him so much.
Named after Phil Lester (AmazingPhil) [YouTube]
Tasuku
Cap
Cap is a husky. He was won from a claw machine with Steve.
There's just something abt the grey and white that gave me Tasuku vibes. Also, Cap's eyes are abt the same shade of blue as Tsumugi's and Tasuku knows this bc they are in love. Very squishy when hugged and with the way he sits, you could make it look like he's guarding something.
Named after Captain America (Marvel)
Homare
Ushijima (Ushi)
Ushijima, also called Ushi, is the last of my giant stuffed animals. He is abt 2-3 ft tall (like Sammy) and has a tail abt the same length.
Ushi is a raccoon thats mostly hot pink. Ushi's eyes are also pink and just abt the same shade as Homare's hair, although Ushi's fur is brighter by a few shades.
Ushi hurts when thrown/swung hard enough. Very fun to hug bc he's filled with beans (like beanie babies) so unlike all my other giant animals, he doesn't have to be fixed/adjusted after everytime you squeeze him. The tail has cotton tho and makes a good pillow.
Homare would definitely just see a 3 ft tall hot pink raccoon and claim it with no explanation.
Named after Ushijima Wakatoshi (Haikyuu)
Hisoka
Vladmir Dracula the 3rd (Vlad, Drac)
Vladmir Dracula the 3rd, who has many other names but usually goes by Vlad or Drac, is a vampire (surprise).
Vlad is a squishmallow thingy, and their tags say something abt them being able to be used as pillows, and thats why Hisoka gets Vlad.
Vlad is triangular in shape, with triangle ears, and triangle fangs, so I thought abt Misumi, but i figured Hisoka bc it's a pillow.
He's like the perfect travel size and he has a cape and a bowtie.
Named after Vlad the Impaler, the real life inspiration behind Dracula (my brother thought he was named after Vladmir Putin and I wanted to punch him for that but I was too busy laughing.)
Also named after Dracula, who was a vampire.
Idk where 'the 3rd' came from, but it's part of his name for forever.
Azuma
Sebastian
Sebastian is a dinosaur thats blue with a white tummy.
He's also a squishmallow, but he's bigger than Vlad by abt 2× as wide, so he'd be harder to carry around, which is why Hisoka got Vlad instead. Being a squishmallow means he looks more blob than dinosaur and i love it.
His tag said his name was Dominic or something, but I named him Sebastian before I actually checked the tag, so he's Sebastian.
Named after Sebastian (Black Butler) and Sebastian Stan (Actor)
Guy
Moriarty
Moriarty is my other polar bear. I got him with Sherlock and named him Moriarty bc Moriarty is Sherlock's nemesis.
He's just a plain white bear thats very huggable and adorable. I usually have a bowtie on him bc it makes him look fancy.
Guy would like him bc he's plain white and very fluffy.

SubmergedMemories/Firestone/TiedbyFate
The question is: Just how do all four of them share the bed when Trimaar is easily the largest of all them?
Simple!
Trimaar sleeps closest to the wall (Opal and Rattla ended up buying a customizable rounded bed from Merlopian to accommodate Trimaar's large frame and tentacles after they complained of not resting well.) Rattla sleeps to the right of Opal leaving her to sleep in the center and Aspherra sleeping on the opposite side and closest to the edge. LOL
The last time that Aspherra was even close to falling off the side Opal quickly wrapped her arms around them to keep them from falling off the side of the bed. Since that night the quadruple huddle together to prevent any more close calls
After celebrating their third year of being together Opal handcrafted and customized all three new sets of jewelry each personalized with their names, sexual orientation colors. Trimaar was absolutely thrilled to bits with his gifts which included a ring, two gauntlets, and a necklace.
Tw: Scars especially keloid scars
Opal knew eventually before they could take their relationship with Trimaar further they would have to show him the scars on her back and tell them the real story behind her scars and why she got them in the first place. When they were finally alone inside the house Opal turned her back to the royal and took off the shirt they wore revealing their heavily scared back to Trimaar who stared in shock. By the end of her tale Trimaar asked if he could touch her scars Opal hesitantly obliged not knowing or seeing their partner's reaction. With upmost delicate care the old king traced all 50 scars with a finger before turning the Serpentine around to hug them.
Clarification:
Oh, I should mention that after 25 years of being married Opal and Rattla agreed to have an open marriage. Their relationship or marriage wasn't going sour or anything like that but it had definitely become slightly strained.
Opal is a workaholic and while she always makes the claim she's planning to retire from her job she never backs the claim up. They're always stressing over their never ending list of orders or commissions they have to get down because for so long that's all Opal knew - Get up at the crack of dawn, go to work from 7-6, come home get ahead start on the easiest orders, eat dinner then go to bed. When she came to the city she didn't have anything to her name therefore she had work from the very bottom and make her way up.
Where is Rattle in this, you ask?
Trapped in the tomb with the other Serpentine before they were released, after reuniting with Opal and the fiasco with the Ninja and cultists stopped, Rattla took up being a referee for the Slither Pit.
The second factor that set the strain between them was after their only son, Harry, died suddenly of a heart attack while on the operation table. Harry was only seven years old when he passed. Sure they did adopt Luke later on as their own and raised them to be the dorky veterinarian everyone loved yet the ache of losing their first child still scarred them deeply.
is Luke already old enough now for them to start more relationships? or do they have healthy boundaries?
Oh yeah, Luke is seven years older than Josel which places him in his mid 30s.
Opal and Rattla talked a lot of things over about what they each wanted and didn't want in an open marriage.
1. No blatantly lying about being with someone new.
2. Open communication about each other's whereabouts and who they're with so they could plan up to meet
3. Being open with their respective partners of being in an open marriage
4. Be honest with each other.
The ironic part of it is that Rattla hasn't found anyone to hooked up with which is not saying he hasn't had sex or participated in group sex before.
is it ironic because Rattla proposed it?
Actually Opal was the one to propose an open marriage to Rattla not the other way around. Both of them enjoy sex it's difficult when you're not in the right frame of mind and either party feels they only got back together again to prove others wrong.
Rattla still holds a lot of strong feelings for Opal and has kept those feelings for her long after she was exiled. Mentally wise the decision is hard on both them due to them devoted and loyal partners however they do agree that they're marriage has been in a standstill.
Extra:
Opal is someone who is caught in the middle of the past and future. It is because of her legend and the scars that cover her back? Yes, her scars never have the proper chance to heal because when it's time for them to shed their skin they reopen the wounds and relive that constant state of agony they felt when they were whipped.
Height chart:
King Trimaar- 10 ft
Opal - 8'7
Rattla - 6'5
Aspheera - 6'4
Being that tall does any its advantages unfortunately it has many disadvantages. Opal often complains about joint pain In her knees, wrists, shoulders, neck and back. It doesn't happen to often but there have been incidences where Opal has all three of her lovers (She and Rattla are married mind you. They've agreed to have an open marriage) visiting at once therefore arguments often happen on who gets to massage Opal.
Rattla often wins about massaging his wife's back since he has the most experience. Aspherra gets to massage her wrists and knees which leave Trimaar to massage her neck and shoulders. Opal is very spoiled and pampered which is something she's still trying to get used to being after many years being alone by herself.

I love Free Day because it means I can do Whatever I Want and I get to rb it to tucweek along with the incredible art pieces and insightful analysis other people have made and mine’s just, like, TUC as vines.
Anyway. Here’s the definitive power ranking of all minor characters* in the Underland Chronicles. It's quite long, because I tried to use every character.
Icarus -this DUUUUDE. This GUYYYYY. SUCKS! -“uh-oh looks like I’m infected with the plague better fly directly into a social gathering” -would be an anti-masker probably  0/10
Reekwell and Gushgore -Fangor and Shed part two, but unfunny this time. 1/10 y’all suck give me Fangor and Shed back
Purvox -Purvox is apparently a beautiful red spider who teaches Hazard how to “speak” Spinner. That’s cool. -that’s it. Why did Suzanne even feel the need to name her? I’m grateful for the extra details but 2/10
Ajax -mean. -nobody likes him -this is probably why he gets on so well with Solovet -some sort of flier general, it seems, which is pretty cool 2/10
Hero & Kent -twins, I guess that’s fun -they’re only like eight but they still Smirk Evilly. Good for them 2/10 just because there’s 2 of them
Anchel & Daphne -some randos Keeda mentions as dead. They probably had some sort of significance to be mentioned by name but We’ll Never Know. 2/10 RIP though. I’m sure you’re worth higher than this but I don’t even know who you are
Horatio -crony #1 -has a crush on Dulcet. Didn’t we all 3.5/10. Boosted solely by association with Dulcet
Marcus -crony #2 3/10
Wevox -thought her name was Weavox until I began writing this post -sort of “Was Margaret Thatcher a Girlboss?” vibes -“As it is, Vikus, we will not drink. Web them” is a RAW line and it bounces around my head sometimes -the spiders are clearly very crafty about their political relations but she was not going to hesitate for a MOMENT to consider the ramifications of killing the monarch of Regalia and we gotta respect that -docking points for the girlboss thing, though. 4/10
Stellovet -queen of insults you gotta be honest -had an INCREDIBLE amount of impact for only having like three lines. I remember being like 11 and reading so many fics on Fan Fiction Dot Net where she was a scheming villain -funny how Luxa thinks her endgame is just becoming a princess. She doesn’t care beyond that she just wants to be royalty 4/10
Chim -baby -ok she’s 5 -doesn’t do anything but look confused and help provide a gateway for Howard to look like a good person 5/10, for years of life. What’s even your name? Chimney?
Andromeda -she’s good. She is an Absolute Beast when she crosses the Waterway with Howard and Mareth, definitely saved Mareth’s life -loves Mareth very much :) -shuns Ares at first but comes around, we still gotta knock her for this though 5/10
Clawsin & Bloodlet & Ratriff -Some folks who go to Ripred’s side, Clawsin gets blinded from the Bane, Ratriff gets his arm ripped off by the Bane, it is what it is 5/10 collectively
Reflex -man’s got jokes -very helpful with the code -shoots streamers of silk around the room when they break it -came to Regalia secretly... secretly to whom? The spinners? The gnawers? Whatever, he’s a rebel either way -I had to look up his name though, so apparently not a lot of impact. Sorry Reflex 5/10
Treflex -announced he was joining the quest, then IMMEDIATELY died. Yes king give us nothing -made a good snack? Gross. 5/10
Cevian -the scene where they find her body is beautifully written and so heartbreaking. She’s the catalyst for the entire fourth book -gives Aurora the opportunity to make her first ever big impassioned speech. It’s what Aurora deserved -still, she doesn’t get any dialogue so I can’t vote her super high 5/10
Euripides -seems nice -always described as “Vikus’ big grey bat,” never just big bat, never just grey bat -tells Luxa to teach Gregor how to ride a bat because his neck is getting bruised lol -nice of him not to embarrass Gregor though 6/10 speak up for yourself, king
Pend -takes Boots back to Regalia after the moth brings her to the crawlers’ land -Vikus recognizes him by name which is really impressive since crawlers look pretty homogenous, although we are told Vikus is better than most at picking them out. Still, Pend is probably a high rolling crawler. 6/10
The scorpions -I know I’m supposed to be doing named characters but they’re pretty cool. The passage they’re in is a really fun read. Mad respect 6/10 I’ll see y’all in Scorpio szn, baby
Razor -showed SHAME and GUILT in the first book when he got called out by Ripred -raised Pearlpelt as if he was his own. In payment, Pearlpelt knocked him off a cliff and then tried to eat him to hide the evidence 6/10
Fangor and Shed -funny dudes. -apparently constantly drunk 6/10
Gox -Gox got shit DONE, okay? Gox got shit DONE. -would eat your carcass without a moment of hesitation. It’s fine. 6/10
Hermes -this guy is great! -brings Luxa her crown -gets seriously injured while protecting Lizzie on their way to Regalia -might be dead tbh no one ever says 7/10
Keeda -okay listen. Keeda’s great. Keeda is that warrior at the Battle of Marathon who ran all the way back to Athens to report their victory and immediately die, except Keeda was reporting that the gnawers were about to invade -listen I know she was dealing with some other stuff, but Vikus asks, “how many rats?” And she says “many. Many rats” ??? No estimate? “An army?” Whatever. We give her a pass. 7/10 RIP
Pandora -FUCK -her death was possibly the MOST disturbing passage I’ve ever read. I could see it so, so vividly in my head. Man I remember the horror -she just wanted to explore 7/10 but also 2/10 for emotional trauma
Queen Athena -ICONIC one-liner in Curse of the Warmbloods, absolutely demolishes the gnawers over their treatment of the nibblers -I’m really biased towards her because Athena is my favorite goddess -probably could’ve done more for Ares, especially as seeing she’s supposed to be perceptive and a really good judge of character and whatnot 7/10
Daedalus -flinches in fear when Boots says she’s gonna sing a for him, specifically -basically pledges his life to Lizzie in the event the Code Room is attacked so that’s very nice 7/10
Heronian -she’s in a full body cast, but that will not stop her. 8/10
Susannah -can we talk about how she lost both of her siblings and she just keeps trucking along? -REALLY wish we knew more about her -clearly Very Kind. Can you please ask your daughter to be nicer -takes really good care of everyone she comes across :) 8/10
Min -creaky old cockroach dance 9/10
Frill -was cool -taught everyone the marks of secret -taught Hamnet about pacifism and stuff too -I get the feeling she was wayyyyy more important to Hazard and Hamnet and their survival than Gregor’s narrative really dives into 9/10
Mr. Cormaci -nice man. Gave Gregor quarters. 10/10
Gregor’s grandma -cool lady, you can’t deny! -tells Gregor he can’t outrun his issues -has a super cool quilt -who IS Simon??? 10/10
Scalene, Euclidian, Root, Cube, and Newton -felt obligated to include all these kiddos because they are, in fact, named, even though none of them get any dialogue or anything else for that matter, really -Scalene was a little nibbler pup that found her mom in the Arena, Euclidian and Root are two more that the mom was looking for, Newton was one that no one claimed but some other guy was like “any of us will take him” which is :’) but also, so, so sad. -Cube was the pup Luxa named that ended up in the pit in the Firelands -Scalene and Newton survived a genocide and Euclidian which is baller any way you swing it 10/10
Tick -:( :( :( -the selflessness. -I shipped her with Temp when I was 8? I can’t answer for that 10/10
York -LMAOOOO this guy’s a LEGEND -7 ft tall. -fights with a zweihander. -says fuck, canonically. -hosts hundreds of nibbler refugees -very loving uncle to Luxa, helps her learn how to rule - his exasperated affection towards Howard when he finds out Howard stayed in the Firelands even after he got sick was very cute 10/10
Honorable mentions: Perdita and Dulcet Their roles are too big in the last book to be included in this list, but these ladies both get a 10/10.

Want to use an eldritch horror in your D&D game? Why not Mother Hydra?
I already covered the oh so wonderful Shub-Niggurath in my last post about using eldritch horrors in D&D, so let’s take a look at another sinfully under-used lady of the eldritch world. Good ol’ Mother Hydra. Who is so under used I could hardly find any info on her at all...
Tumblr media
So we all know what a Deep One is, right? They’re an ocean-dwelling race of fish people who kind of have the hots for humans. Seriously, Deep Ones love banging humans. They’ve done it so much that some people believe they’ve now reached the point where their genes are so weak that mating with humans is the only way they can still reproduce anymore. But if you’re a poor fishing village on the brink, you may actually find this appealing, because the Deep Ones are kind of like the shepherds of the sea. Only instead of herding sheep they’re herding fish. And they can herd those fish right into your fishing nets... In addition to that, they also seem to have a vast supply of gold artifacts of unearthly design which they are also willing to share.
So... Poor fishing, can’t sustain itself, people have nowhere to go and no way to survive? Problem solved! All you have to do is have sex with fish people and they will provide you with bountiful catches and gold treasures. And don’t think that it’s just a bunch of fish out there in the ocean viewing you as their prostitutes either... They’ll even stick around and join your village and help care for your women after they’ve knocked them all up. How nice! Although if it’s the other way around and you’re a guy who knocked up a fish lady it’s more like a shotgun wedding at that point, but hey... At least she’s got loads of gold, right?
And once the Deep Ones have set up camp in your village they will even let you join their religion. And by let you join, I mean that it’s mandatory... They’re going to tare down your churches and replace them with the Esoteric Order of Dagon, where they will teach you how to worship the true god, Father Dagon.
You know Father Dagon, right?
Tumblr media
He’s the deity who presides over the Deep Ones. Some say he’s a Great Old One, but it’s more likely that Dagon is an enormous specimen of Deep One. While apparently immortal, his longevity may be attributable to his fraternization with the Star Spawn, who sometimes select formidable specimens from a given species to protect, nurture, and empower for reasons known only to them. So in reality you are probably just worshiping a really big fish warlock who is in turn getting his power from someone like Cthulhu.
But before you go thinking this deal is just getting worse all the time, let me point out that it’s not bad for everyone. Because Father Dagon is going to need a consort. Which means if you’re a hot little piece of fish girl ass and you are deeply devoted to the Esoteric Order of Dagon, and you follow all the rites and rituals and sacrifice enough of the unbelievers, Dagon may just decide to empower you the same way he himself is being empowered by definitely not Cthulhu but probably Cthulhu. Then you too can become a giant fish monster of enormous size and power and be worshiped by all the other Deep Ones as their new goddess, Mother Hydra. Sure, you’ve got to take Dagon as your Pact of the Great Old One patron, and then you’ve got to become his mate... but you’re already a fish girl so that probably doesn’t sound so bad... and you’ve just obtained godhood! Sort of... Not really... You have no supernatural power outside of what any other warlock would have... But who can tell the difference?! You’re fifty feet tall now and worshiped by your people! If anyone wants to argue that you aren’t actually a goddess, you can just eat them. You and your new hubby are sitting at the foot of Cthulhu’s throne. Who’s going to argue with that?
Now as a DM I don’t know if I would allow a PC to actually go through this transformation, but it is doable. Both Father Dagon and Mother Hydra are just titles passed on to the greatest of the Deep Ones if the old Father Dagon and Mother Hydra die. If I did allow a PC to go through the transformation into becoming Mother Hydra that would probably be the entire campaign and once the PC had become Mother Hydra it would end and I would take their character sheet to be used in future campaigns. Sort of a way of letting the players create the gods of their world they are playing in.
If the PC was a warlock who wanted to take Mother Hydra as their patron I wouldn’t do it all that much differently than other Pact of the Great Old One warlocks. Unlike some of the eldritch horrors that could be used, Mother Hydra isn’t all that powerful. She doesn’t have any extra supernatural abilities to grant to PCs the way someone like Shub-Niggurath does. If you wanted to be really realistic about it, you could actually make the PC roll with disadvantage when using magic on account of the fact that their patron is just a more powerful warlock, getting her power from an even more powerful warlock, getting his power from an actual Star Spawn. So if you wanted you could say the warlock’s power is not coming directly from the source and is being diluted twice before it gets to him. Not exactly great for a PC but that is something you could do if you wanted a group of warlocks for a low level party to fight without too much trouble. Just have them fight warlocks of Mother Hydra who all roll with disadvantage.
As for using Mother Hydra herself as a monster in combat, I would probably use something like this...
Mother Hydra
Huge monstrosity (deep one), neutral evil
Armor Class 20 (natural armour) Hit Points 337 (25d12 + 175) Speed 30 ft., swim 60 ft.
STR 25 (+7) DEX 14 (+2) CON 25 (+7) INT 14 (+2) WIS 18 (+4) CHA 20 (+5)
Saving Throws Str +13, Dex +8, Int +8, Wis +10 Damage Vulnerabilities lightning Damage Resistances poison; bludgeoning, piercing and slashing from nonmagical attacks Condition Immunities charmed, frightened, poisoned Senses darkvision 120 ft., passive Perception 14 Languages Deep Speech, Common Challenge 20 (25,000 XP)
Amphibious. Mother Hydra can breathe both air and water.
Aquatic. While in water, Mother Hydra has advantage on attack rolls against non-aquatic creatures.
Magic Resistance. Mother Hydra has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Magic Weapons. Mother Hydra's weapon attacks are magical.
Matriarch's Sacrifice. When a deep one within a range of 60 feet of Mother Hydra takes damage, Mother Hydra can chose to take this damage instead of the deep one.
ACTIONS
Multiattack. Mother Hydra makes three attacks: one with her bite, one with her claw and one with her mind grasp.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 23 (3d10 + 7) piercing damage.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 25 (4d8 + 7) slashing damage.
Mind Grasp. Ranged Spell Attack: +11 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (3d10 + 5) psychic damage.
Matriarch's Blessing. Hydra chooses a deep one within 120 feet of her. This deep one regains 27 (4d10 + 5) hit points. Hydra cannot target herself with this ability.
LEGENDARY ACTIONS
Mother Hydra can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. Mother Hydra regains spent legendary actions at the start of her turn.
Attack. Mother Hydra makes one bite attack or one claw attack. Matriarch's Blessing (Costs 2 Actions). Mother Hydra uses Matriarch's Blessing. Matriarch's Curse (Costs 3 Actions). Mother Hydra targets one creature that she can see within 30 feet of her. That creature must succeed on a DC 19 Charisma saving throw or be cursed for 1 hour. While cursed in this way, the target has disadvantage on attack rolls made against deep ones and on saving throws made against spells or effects created by deep ones.
As a variant on this you may also want to add a small spell list to Mother Hydra’s arsenal. If you actually allowed a player to create your Mother Hydra through turning a warlock PC into her as mentioned above, you could just use whatever spells that PC had at the time of her transformation. If you didn’t go that route but you still want your Mother Hydra to be a spell slinger, I would remember to keep the spells limited and not too powerful (choosing only from the Warlock’s spell list) because Mother Hydra isn’t intended to be anything more than a CR 20 monster.

My Top 10 Favorite Hit Songs of 2018
I’m going to say it. This year’s popular music SUCKED. As I attempted to keep in touch with the US Billboard charts, the music I saw getting big every week only assisted in my losing faith in humanity. Pop music just wasn’t popular this year. And that’s not to say that pop music is dead or that there isn’t any good pop music being made, (just look at my entire page,) but it certainly wasn’t getting as much success in the mainstream as usual. I get it. Music trends come and go, and what’s big in at one point in time might not be in another Just think about how much R&B there was in the 2000s, and how club/EDM anthems were giant in the early 2010s. This year was dominated by hip hop, which I have nothing against in theory, but at least have it be GOOD hip hop music. I know there’s amazing hip hop out there, but that’s not what I saw getting popular. The bad stuff this year was really bad, at best bland and forgettable and at worst unlistenable garbage music made by garbage people. But rather than focus on the bad, I think that it’ll be better for my sanity to focus on the good, just to assure myself that even when the charts are dominated by shit there might a diamond hidden somewhere. This is the chart I will be using. So, without further ado, here are my best hit songs of 2018.
Tumblr media
10) One Kiss by Calvin Harris ft. Dua Lipa This isn’t my favorite Dua Lipa song by far, (or Calvin Harris song,) but this is still a ton of fun. The production is simple, but tropical and uptempo, with a glossy, shuffling background beat and synthy horn riffs, and Dua Lipa’s performance helps elevate it all. This song radiates summer, it’s like having a tall glass of orange juice on the beach. My only problem with the song is the drop, with the pitch-lowered vocals and continuation of the background track. It feels a bit lazy and is too short to really build up steam. Otherwise, this song is pretty good. It was certainly refreshing to hear on the radio every so often.
Tumblr media
9) Eastside by Benny Blanco ft. Khalid & Halsey This song is so relaxing and smooth. The production is simple, with a mid-tempo beat and a couple fluttering notes her and there, but it suits the subject matter of the song, which is very nostalgic and bittersweet. As always, I love the sound of Khalid’s voice, (though his pronunciation on this song is kind of garbled, it’s hard to tell what he’s saying,) and Halsey’s performance is good too, never dipping into grating territory like it does sometimes. The two of them have great chemistry. Also, the music video for this song is both funny and heartbreaking. It low key made me cry? I never heard this on the radio where I live, and only listening to it recently when making this list, but it’s certainly one of the best hit songs of the year.
Tumblr media
8) LOVE. by Kendrick Lamar ft. Zacari Kendrick Lamar made a… pop song? Kind of? Okay, I wouldn’t call it pop, it’s definitely still hip hop, but it’s got some R&B and pop elements to it. It’s his version of a pop song. While it may not Kendrick Lamar’s best song, it’s still Kendrick Lamar. Him not at his “not best” is a whole lot better than other artists at their peak. The production is bold but at the same time chill, with a smoky kind of atmosphere. I’ve never listened to Zaraci, but his voice is wonderful here, cutting through the background music and Kendrick Lamar’s rapping like a ray of sunlight. I’m going to be honest, I mostly love this song because the CHVRCHES version is so good (listen to that here.)
Tumblr media
7) Love Lies by Khalid ft. Normani This is one of the only pop songs that got consistent radio play where I live, and while the overplay did wear this track out a bit, I still like it. I never changed the station when it came on. Khalid and Normani have great chemistry, (what is it about Khalid that makes him so good at duets? With Eastside, this, lovely with Billie Eilish…) I love their harmonies on the chorus. Normani is a very promising vocalist, I’m excited to see what she comes out with in the future. The production is solid, with that low (I think guitar? synths? IDK) riff, snap percussion, and vocal layering in the backgrounds.
Tumblr media
6) IDGAF by Dua Lipa The. Tell. Off. Anthem. Of. The. Year. This is a guilty pleasure of mine, I can’t say that this song is particularly good, but I’m literally in love Dua Lipa, so I don’t care. She’s sassy as hell on this song. The production is so catchy, especially with that plucky guitar melody and those pianos that come in as the song progresses. I love the bridge, where it goes back to just her and guitar, and it slowly builds back up to the final chorus. My only problem with hearing this on the radio is that it always had to be the censored version! I mean, I get why, but listening to the censored version of this song is like eating an unsalted Saltine cracker. It’s completely against the point.
Tumblr media
5) Delicate by Taylor Swift I haven’t heard the entirety of Reputation. I don’t think I’ll ever go out of my way to listen to it. Look What You Made Me Do and ...Ready For It? were pretty awful, but Delicate? Delicate I really love. I didn’t like LWYMMD or ...RFI? because they were grating, lacked subtlety in their lyrics, and the production was all over the place. But this song takes the lyrical themes in those songs and presents them in a more vulnerable light, which works a lot better. And the production is very nice too. Everything flows together so smoothly. I like how the chorus is just her voice with the snaps in the background, and then melodies rush back in for the “drop.” This song washes over you and it’s perfect for a late night drive.
Tumblr media
4) Boo’d Up by Ella Mai Praise the heavens for this song’s success. I remember when I first head it, it was so pants-shittingly good that it blew my mind. Ella Mai’s vocals are gorgeous, going through the melodies with such ease and grace and using vibrato in just the right places. The production on this song is lush as hell. I love the blocky percussion, light cymbals, and twinkling pianos. My only problem with this song is the extended spoken word outro, which gets a bit tiring. Otherwise, this is an amazing song.
Tumblr media
3) when the party’s over by Billie Eilish  I’m cheating here. This song didn’t make it onto the year end list, but I just had to include it. This song is heart-wrenching in all the right ways. Billie Eilish’s vocals are quiet and reserved, dipping into her higher register, they’re just so vulnerable and sad. She emits so much emotion on this song. The production on this song is simple, with just a piano, some distortion, background vocals, and not much else, but that’s what makes it work so perfectly. Anything else, and this song would become too cluttered. I’m so happy that this has hit the charts and is picking up steam, because god knows we need more promising, unique, and talented voices like Billie Eilish’s in the mainstream.
Tumblr media
2) Finesse (Remix) by Bruno Mars ft. Cardi B Sometimes, you just need a song that’s downright fun. That’s how to describe this song. FUN! It’s so energetic and fucking catchy, everything about it clicks into just the right place. I don’t like Cardi B, but she’s pretty great here. Bruno Mars is great here. The production is slick as hell, with the bells and the drums and the sound effects. That little doh-pah sound in the chorus? Amazing, low key my favorite part of this song. You can’t not dance to this song. It’s perfect for a party playlist, or even when you just want to feel happy. This was such a relief to hear on the radio in between all the forgettable mush, like a rainbow pouring through the clouds.

Should Have Been Hits
Strangers by Sigrid This song had a ton of chart success in Europe, but didn’t cross over to the U.S. I guess we weren’t interested in listening to a bubbly, sunny BOP AND A HALF.
Paradise by George Ezra George Ezra, you know, the “Budapest” guy? That song was pretty good, wasn’t it? Another hit in the UK, this song features an electric, rushing beat, sick guitars, and George Ezra’s wonderful deep voice. I only have one issue with this song, and that’s that the line “running though your bloody veins” makes my skin crawl. Otherwise, this song is a total jam.
Answerphone by Banx & Ranx & Ella Eyre featuring Yxng Bane Slaps to the gods. Holy lord. This is the summer smash we deserved. Listen to it NOW.
Sun In Our Eyes by MØ ft. Diplo C’mon, we can give MØ another hit, can’t we? One where she isn’t sidelined into a feature slot? No? Our loss, then. This song isn’t my favorite off Forever Neverland, but had the most potential to become a hit, (I even heard it in a Starbucks one time,) and it deserved to.
Honorable Mentions/Guilty Pleasures
Wait by Maroon 5 I’m willing to admit that this song isn’t that good. Adam Levine’s falsetto is grating, the beat staggers all over the place like it’s drunk, and the production turns everything into soup. But something about this song keeps me from hating it like I know I should. Maybe it’s the fact that I find it kind of relaxing, maybe it’s because Alexandra Daddario is in the music video and she’s really pretty... I don’t know.
Friends by Marshmello ft. Anne-Marie Okay, this song straight up SUCKS and I kind of like it a lot? The production is a mish mash of random noises that sound like a robot having a seizure, Anne-Marie’s voice get annoying, and the lyrics are reprehensible. Still low key love it though. It’s like drinking Mountain Dew: you know it tastes cruddy and is bad for you, but there’s a spark to it that keeps you coming back.
Nice for What by Drake In a year where Drake absolutely DOMINATED the charts, this is the song by him that I liked the most. It’s got a groove to it with that Ms. Lauryn Hill sample and some decent lyrics.
Lucid Dreams by Juice WRLD It’s just fucking catchy, man I don’t know what else to say. (It’s not even his melody, really. It’s a Sting sample.) This song is the epitome of whiny sad boi emo rap, and the positively dreadful lyrics reflect that. I’m not going to say this song is even remotely good, (it’s probably one of the worst songs of the yeah, tbh,) and I’m not going to defend it. I’m ashamed enough as it is.
Youngblood by 5 Seconds Of Summer Who would’ve thought that the band that came up with “you look so perfect standing there in my American Apparel underwear,” one of the dumbest lyrics ever put to music, could come up with something good? This song has a propulsive feel, like you could go on a run to it. I like the “ooooh” that come in during the chorus too. Count this in as my number 11 pick.
All the shitty schlock music that got big this year was starting to weigh me down. I was in a state of mind, if you will. But then, something happened. I heard a song, a pop song, a good pop song. A great pop song. A song with an angelic opening, a surprising yet amazing switch-up, and uplifting lyrics. And then, in that moment, I knew that something wonderful had happened, that a god has returned from the heavens, and that I, now, had no tears left to cry.
Tumblr media
1) no tears left to cry by Ariana Grande  This song is awesome, okay? The production is catchy, the lyrics and fun, the chorus soars like a goddamn eagle, and the vocals? Do I even have to tell you? It’s Ariana Grande. This powerhouse performance puts all those mushy mouthed vocal deliveries that ruled the charts this year to shame. And in the midst of all the slower tempoed songs, I remember hearing this song and thinking: “by god, you can dance to this.” All of these elements come together and form something special, something damn near perfect. no tears left to cry by Ariana Grande. My favorite hit song of 2018.
Do you agree with this list? What were your favorite hit songs of 2018? Leave a comment and let me know!

This announcement is a little delayed from what I would have liked, but I came down with a cold right after drawing the winner for my giveaway and contacting the winner, so here it is now instead.
The winner of my 500 follower giveaway was @enbydragonnerd, and they requested for me to create a basilisk from Tamora Pierce’s Tortallan Universe, first introduced in the Immortals quartet.
Basilisk Medium fey, true neutral Armor Class 18 Hit Points 195 (26d10 + 78) Speed 30 ft. Str 14, Dex 18, Con 17, Int 18, Wis 14, Cha 18 Saving Throws Intelligence +8, Wisdom +6 Skills History +12, Insight +6, Nature +12, Religion +12 Senses passive Perception 12 Languages Common, Draconic, any three others Challenge 10 (5900 XP) Dash. As long as the basilisk’s hands are free it can Dash as a bonus action. Immortal Weapons. The basilisk’s weapon attacks are magical and silver. Limited Magic Immunity. The basilisk can’t be affected by spells of 3rd level or lower unless it wishes to be. It has advantage on saving throws against all other spells and magical effects. Uncanny Grace. The AC of the basilisk includes its Charisma bonus. Innate Spellcasting. The basilisk’s spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 16). The basilisk can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components: At will: comprehend languages, speak with animals 3/day each: blindness/deafness, dispel magic, stone shape, thunderwave (as a 3rd level spell) 1/day each: stoneskin, tongues, wall of stone Actions Multiattack. The basilisk makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws. Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6+4) piercing damage. Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d4+4) slashing damage. Stone Screech (Recharge 5-6). The basilisk unleashes a loud cry that can petrify creatures and objects around it. Each creature the basilisk chooses within 30 feet of it must make a DC 16 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the target is petrified and turned to stone. A petrified creature must repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success. If a creature fails three of these saving throws while petrified, it is petrified until freed by the greater restoration spell or similar magic.       This ability also affects any number of non-magical objects of Medium size or smaller within the area that the basilisk chooses that are not being worn or carried. These objects do not make saving throws against this effect.
This immortal being is superficially similar to lizards with a beaded hide that may come in colors from a pearly dark gray to a midnight black. They stand on two legs and stand seven to seven and a half feet tall. Their long tails are usually held in hand rather than allowed to drag across the ground. A silver glint comes from their claws and teeth, glittering brightly in the light. When pressed they will drop their tails and run on all four limbs, giving them a boost of speed to escape danger. Magic of Sound and Stone. Basilisks have many inherent magics, most tied to their powerful voices and to stone. Their most powerful magic is a loud scream that will petrify creatures and objects near them, but they have many others that can shape or conjure stone. They can also modulate their scream to tear at creatures bodies and repulse them when they have temporarily exhausted their ability to petrify. The most powerful defensive magics a basilisk has will even turn its own flesh into stone, protecting it from attacks. Immortal Beings. Basilisks are true immortals, living even longer than dragons if not killed. They do not age or grow sick with disease and their oldest among them have lived thousands of years and accumulated unfathomable amounts of knowledge in their time. This immortality does not protect them from injury however, and basilisks can die through external forces. They also still must eat, though they primarily eat stone and rock in any form and with their magic are capable of creating this food out of any other substance. While basilisks can eat creatures or objects they have turned to stone, they rarely enjoy it. The base stone created from their magic is bland and unappetizing, with many preferring more exotic stones. Igneous rocks are enjoyed for their purity of flavor, while some basilisks enjoy sedimentary or metamorphic stones for the different mixtures available. Travelers and Scholars. Most basilisks spend their immortal lifespan seeking new information. Many of the greatest scholars alive are basilisks, and those seeking their guidance and advice will search far and wide to find where they have travelled to. Few basilisks settle down for long, usually only remaining if there is still research to be done on a topic they are interested in. Once they’ve satisfied their curiosity on a given subject, which may take decades depending on how thorough the source they are examining is, they will inevitably move on to somewhere new. As an additional effect of their long lifespans and thirst for knowledge is their proficiency with languages. While all basilisk have innate magics that let them understand or speak languages they don’t understand, many seek to learn new languages so they do not rely on their magic in such a way. They pick up these languages over years of experiencing them, and many will know elvish, dwarvish or even orcish. Some will delve deeper into knowledge of other realms and may pick up sylvan, undercommon, and even celestial or infernal to better study the knowledge of the upper and lower planes.
Xanathar’s Guide If you have access to Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, some of the new spells included there fit nicely with the Basilisk’s flavor and other abilities. Consider changing the basilisk’s innate spellcasting to the following: At Will: comprehend languages, speak with animals, thunderclap (11th level) 3/day each: blindness/deafness, dispel magic, erupting earth, stone shape 1/day each: investiture of stone, tongues, wall of stone
Thank you again to all of you for following me here, and thank you to the winner for your patience and for your support in helping me figure out the abilities for this. I haven’t actually read Tamora Pierce yet, though she’s on my “to read” list, and so I needed a little help figuring out how to put the stats together for this in a reasonable time frame.

January 2, 2021
Woohoo, We have made it to a new year!
Christmas was really great this year, the kids all ended up with too much stuff as always.  Max got the new zelda game and a case, Penny got a ton of art supplies, and Lily got a supermarket store toy.  They all seemed pretty stoked on Christmas morning, Robby and I got each other gifts this year too which is years past we usually have not.  I got a new purse and a ton of awesome fuzzy socks, also a new hair dryer which I really needed.  I got Rob an ancestry thing which I’m totally excited for his information to come back from.  I also got him a Keurig coffee maker.  We had three other Christmas events, the first one was with Katie and Daniel and Gwen and John’s house.  This one almost didn’t happen because 2 weeks before Katie got covid, then quickly after Daniel got it too.  They just missed the quarantine window and were able to come.  They are fine, they did both lose their sense of smell and taste for a while and were pretty down for a couple days.  We also celebrated at my dads house on Christmas Eve and then we went to Jesse’s house on Christmas Day with my mom and Mike.  Overall it was a really nice chill holiday, this is the one year when not having a huge family worked out well because we were able to be with everyone relatively safely.
The vaccine is now available, but only for certain groups of people.  It started with front line people at hospitals and now we are in phase 2 which includes other nurses and health care people, along with people who live in large communities like nursing homes and prisons.  My mom got one just this last week!  I have a feeling we are kind of at the end of this but people are saying a lot of things may still be shut down and masks may still be around well into 2022.  I am just not sure how to feel about it all, it really hasn’t effected the schools nearly as much as I would have thought.  The kids all go back to school in 2 days so hopefully they will make it through the rest of the school year without any more issues.  I am pretty upset still about not getting to go on any field trips or getting to see their holiday or graduation programs, but in the end I’m happy they are at least getting to go to school and not having to have me be their teacher mom anymore!
On another happy note, I booked Disney again!! 2021 is going to be our year, and it is totally going to happen.  I have a condo right by Disney booked and I rebooked our plane tickets!  I feel a little less excited then I did about this a year ago I think just because there is always a chance it wont be able to happen.  I am trying to have faith it’ll all work out.
Katie’s baby Caroline is growing!  Katie is about 30 weeks now, we have just under 2 months until she is due!  We are so excited to meet her, the baby shower is going to be in 2 weeks.  I’ve been stressing out about it more than I usually do things like this but I think I have gotten it all figured out at this point.  I have been feeling a little unmotivated lately.  Which has just been stressing me out and not helping with actually getting anything accomplished.  Either way the shower is in two weeks and hopefully I’ll have it all figured out by then...
I got to watch Miles, Natalie’s baby for 3 days at the beginning of Christmas break.  He is a really good baby, he is just over 6 months now and almost sitting up on his own.  He seems to hate all baby food and spits it all up but he doesn’t cry much.  He naps really well but man he doesn’t like to be left alone.  He wants to be held 24/7!  The kids were all really big helpers, Penny especially seemed to really enjoying playing with him.  I ended up making like 5 batches of cookies and 4 pies one of the days I was watching for Christmas and Penny helped me play with him when I couldn’t.
So Max had his wellness appointment at the beginning of December.  He is at the 30 percentile which kind of surprised me because I felt like he was always around the 50 percentile but the Dr said he was about the same at last year.  Either way he is 4 ft and 4 inches and weighs 59 lbs.  He had only been to the dr once since his last wellness appointment, when he and Penny were sick over the summer.  Pretty impressive when they can go that long without being too sick!  He made a new friend at school this year which has been so great, I know he was really wanting to find a friend who he actually got along with and I think that has finally happened.  His name is Aiden and he came and spent the night with us on New Years eve!  The boys were both asleep around 11 and I was just after them, haha...we watched the ball drop in NYC time and that was enough for us!  He is getting ready to go to Aiden's house to stay tonight too, this will be his second time staying the night with a friend.  His first time was with Michael and Eli a few months ago.  Max got a ton of new books for Christmas but he mostly has his nose in his Nintendo lately.  I’m letting him have it until the break is over then we will try to get back into a more healthy screen time routine.
Penelope, my beautiful Penelope, she is like a little teenager all of the sudden.  Not like moody or anything but all the sudden she wants to dress more mature, not little girly, no big bows or bright colors.  She is super into makeup and fashion.  She got a ton of art stuff for Christmas and has been painting quite a lot.  We got her a big stand up easel and she wants to take it to a park somewhere and paint a landscape like they do in the movies.  So yeah we are definitely going to make that happen as soon as it warms up a little bit.  She is doing fantastic in school, she just won as the best mathematician in her class then got 4th in the grade!  She is reading extremely well for her age too.  She has made friends with two girls who live down the street and they play often which is awesome.  I’m happy that she has that like I did when I was little.  She had Macy come over and stay the night on New Years Eve as well and they stayed up until 3 in the morning!  So they ended up sleeping like all day the next day haha but I’m sure they had fun, I wouldn’t know I was asleep at 11.
Lily turned 6 since I last wrote on here!!!  My baby is 6, gah I can’t even deal.  Her birthday party was great!  I was hoped a few more people would have come but it all turned out perfect and no one got covid out of it, haha.  Lily had a friend from her class that got to come and that totally made Lily’s day!  I took her to his yearly wellness appointment too and She is in the 40th percentile and weighs almost 50 lbs and I can’t remember how tall she is but I think it is 3′11″.  I’ll have to check that and update it later*** What else is going on with Lily, well she started sucking her thumb again, I don’t even know, she had stopped, like totally stopped and now it is back like she never stopped if not worse.  I’m trying to give her a couple weeks to let everything calm back down and then we will try with the bandaid again and try to get her to stop.  She lost her first tooth!  Bottom left, and the one next to it is almost out and both of the new teeth have already popped through.  We were really hoping to have her stopped sucking her thumb before her front teeth came in, which is pretty soon now.  Hopefully we will get back there soon!  What else is Lily up to, she is thriving in school, her teacher tells me that she is really good at following directions and she is nice to everyone like they are her best friend.  She is getting perfect grades on everything and seems to be exactly where she needs to be.  She is getting good at her sight words but hasn’t found the confidence yet to totally say she is reading yet.  I have a feeling by the end of this school year she will totally be there though.  Lily has been wanting to have a friend come over and stay the night so bad, we have tried with Ivy and Olly a friend from school but their moms think they are too young, which I totally understand but still, she sees Max and Penny doing it and feels left out.  Don’t grow up too fast baby girl :)
Well it is a new year and I set myself a hefty amount of goals for the new year.  My first goal was to write on this more, like once every 2 weeks.
I am going to try to have at least one date night a month with Robby
We are going to Disney
We are going to start, and dare I say finish the kitchen in 2021
I’m going to see 100 on the scale...
I’m going to try new recipes and healthier recipes
One day a week will be tech free, this includes the kids (Max is thrilled)
Also I want to get better at crafting and sewing, I’m going to try to make a new thing once a week, stop pinning on pinterest and start creating
Read 2 books every month
It seems like a pretty overwhleming goal list but everything is totally doable and I think hopefully It will make for a great year!
Cheers!

Top 50 Singles of 2017
My final article of 2017! There have been a lot of good music this year. Trying to cut down to 50 songs was a hard task, having over 70 songs by different artists before cutting them down. This means I’ve missed a lot of songs that I really wanted to add. I have finally got it down to 50 though and I have made a Spotify playlist which I will link to this if you want to check out the tracks that made it. I’ll only list from 50-21 (like I did last year) but will talk about the top 20 tracks. For statistics, I have one Canadian, four from the UK, eight from the states and a whopping 37 from Australia.
50. Never Let Me Go - Green Buzzard (AUS)
49. 911/Call Me - Tyler the Creator ft. Frank Ocean and Steve Lacy (US)
48. call the police - LCD Soundsystem (US)
47. Birthdays - The Smith Street Band (AUS)
46. Yanada - The Preatures (AUS)
45. Love Can Be. . . - Vince Staples ft. Ray J, Kilo Kish and Damon Albarn (US)
44. Pure Luck - Ninajirachi ft. Freya Staer (AUS)
43. Crushing Hard - Urthboy (AUS)
42. Murder to the Mind - Tash Sultana (AUS)
41. Dawning - DMAs (AUS)
40. Diamonds - A$AP Twelvyy ft. A$AP Rocky (US)
39. Second Hand Car - Kim Churchill (AUS)
38. Golden - Kingswood (AUS)
37. The Remedy - Polaris (AUS)
36. P Plates - Ruby Fields (AUS)
35. These Kicks - Citizen Kay ft. Georgia B. (AUS)
34. Shred for Summer - DZ Deathrays (AUS)
33. Feel It Still - Portugal. The Man (US)
32. Science Fiction - The Belligerents (AUS)
31. Cigarette - Ali Barter (AUS)
30. Got On My Skateboard - Skeggs (AUS)
29. I Haven’t Been Taking Care of Myself - Alex Lahey (AUS)
28. Andromeda - Gorillaz ft. DRAM (UK)
27. Man You Want Me To Be - WHARVES (AUS)
26. Afterthought - Dear Seattle (AUS)
25. True Lovers - Holy Holy (AUS)
24. Homely Feeling - Hockey Dad (AUS)
23. Low Blows - Meg Mac (AUS)
22. One More Love Song - Mac DeMarco (CAN)
21. The Evil Has Landed - Queens of the Stone Age (US)
20. Not Worth Hiding - Alex the Astronaut (AUS)
Alex the Astronaut has had a huge year. She released her debut album and has seen a growing fanbase to make her one of Australia’s most popular solo female artists. Her lead single Not Worth Hiding is a gorgeous song, reflecting her humble, gentle, kind attitude whilst having a relevant political point about accepting LGBTI communities
19. Night of the Long Knives - Everything Everything (UK)
Night of the Long Knives is a huge song. From the first time the chorus drops, it brings you into a darker, experimental world, shaping what is to come on most of their album A Fever Dream. Jonathan Higgen’s voice is again flexed, his falsetto being a brilliant feature in the verses.
18. Deadcrush - Alt-J (UK)
There are many highlights on Relaxer and I had a hard time picking between this, In Cold Blood¸ and Adeline. Deadcrush has become my favourite off the album though, the weird vocal in the chorus and thumping bass heavy beat making it both an intriguing listen and a danceable track.
17. Destiny’s - Arno Faraji (AUS)
Triple J’s Unearthed High winner, Arno Faraji, is the future of Australian Hip Hop. His beats are mellow, and his rapping style laid back, having a heavy influence on US rappers like Chance the Rapper and GoldLink. Definitely an artist to watch for the future, with Destiny’s being his best song so far
16. Dumb Days - Tired Lion (AUS)
Tired Lion’s debut album this year was a good listen. The title track though blows the rest of the album away. With a strong theme of growing up and missing the feeling of being younger, Sophie Hopes belts out the Smashing Pumpkins like track, with the outro chorus hitting right into the feels.
15. Friends - Kwame (AUS)
One of my best discoveries of the year was Sydney rapper Kwame. His EP Lesson Learned was a great listen from start to finish. Friends is a highlight from the EP, with a beautiful piano motif throughout, reminiscent of artists like Kanye. Another Australian rapper who will hopefully shape the future of the genre.
14. Fuck Off - Pist Idiots (AUS)
Another Triple J Unearthed find, Pist Idiots are a great punk band. On Fuck Off they don’t hold back, detailing a broken relationship where the partner doesn’t want anything to do with him anymore. The brutality of the lyrics combined with the distorted, messy instrumentation is brilliant, conveying a feel of desperation in the music.
13. Be About You - Winston Surfshirt (AUS)
From one of the year’s angriest tracks to one of the year’s sexiest tracks, Be About You is a smooth song. With Winston’s intimate delivery in both the rap verses and the falsetto chorus, it builds like an Anderson Paak or Justin Timberlake song. Definitely the most intimate song of the year.
12. Chateau - Angus and Julia Stone (AUS)
Brother and sister duo Angus and Julia Stone returned from a long hiatus this year with their album Snow. The highlight from this album was Chateau, their biggest song since 2010’s Big Jet Plane. With gorgeous production, beautiful harmonies and a relaxed vibe, their switch to a more pop direction was a good choice, producing one of their best songs yet.
11. Run for Cover - The Killers (US)
Just missing out on my top 10 was the comeback from Las Vegas rockers, The Killers. Although lead single The Man was good, I felt Run for Cover highlighted their sound better, being a strong rock song reminiscent of past hits such as When You Were Young and Read My Mind. The quartet came back into mainstream attention this year in a big way, and Run for Cover was the track that proved it.
10. Feel the Way I Do - The Jungle Giants (AUS)
If someone told me that Jungle Giants would be releasing fresh tunas like this I’d be shocked and appalled. But here we are. From the opening keyboard motif to the singalong choruses, this has everything a perfect indie pop song needs.
9. Humble - Kendrick Lamar (US)
Humble is the biggest track of the year. It will probably win the Hottest 100 (deservedly) and will continue to dominate most dancefloors around the world. It’s mix of a catchy hook, a strong beat and Kung Fu Kenny’s signature rapping style is brilliant and it’s obvious why this song has become such a megahit.
8. Nuclear Fusion - King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (AUS)
Out the 50-something songs that King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have released this year, the early release Nuclear Fusion still stands tall as the best. Their exploration of microtonal tunings and riffs are at their best in this song, as they utilise microtones to create a catchy yet dissonant melodies, catching the listener off guard. The “nuclear fusion” voice is a winner as well.
7. You’re in Love with a Psycho - Kasabian (UK)
Writing a perfect pop rock song is pretty hard. It’s a risky move, balancing catchy hooks with enough experimentation to remain interesting. You’re in Love With a Psycho is one of those songs which master it though. A song which is impossible to remove from your brain once you listen to it, it’s a completely fun, silly song which you can’t stop playing on repeat. With lines like “you’re like the taste of macaroni on a seafood stick”, Kasabian might have written the most fun pop song of the year.
6. The Comedown - Ocean Alley (AUS)
Like The Jungle Giants, I wasn’t too big on Ocean Alley a couple of years back. They’ve completely converted me though with The Comedown. With crisp piano, a smooth baseline, some beautiful guitar effects and the amazing voice of Baden Donegal, Ocean Alley have filled up the hole that Sticky Fingers left behind.
5. Marryuna - Baker Boy ft. Yirrmal (AUS)
I don’t think I’ve ever heard a tradition Indigenous language rapped before, but Baker Boy’s unique style of mixing his Indigenous tongue with English is genius. He switches between languages with ease, whilst creating catchy hooks which will get you singing along, even if you don’t really know what the words mean (highly recommend looking them up though). Baker Boy is a huge talent for the next generation and hopefully we hear more Indigenous hip hop following his success.
4. Boys will be Boys - Stella Donnelly (AUS)
This song is a tough listen, and even harder to write about. Stella Donnelly’s song detailing the experience of her friend’s experience after being raped, including the victim blaming by friends and family of the rapist, is hard to hear, especially when it’s described in such an honest and detailed manner. It’s a song that needs to be written though, with it’s message as relevant as ever with protests like the ‘#metoo’ campaign bringing light to rape culture and victim blaming/shaming. It’s a beautiful song as well, with Donnelly’s voice perfectly blending with the gorgeous guitar accompaniment.
3. Exactly How You Are - Ball Park Music (AUS)
Ball Park Music were relatively quiet for most of 2017, but they released two great indie tunes in the second half, the best being Exactly How You Are. A gorgeous love song which is as beautiful as it is simple sounds like an early Beatles or Beach Boys song, as Jen and Sam’s voices harmonise perfectly together in the chorus. Be prepared for an album by the band in 2018, with second single The Perfect Life Does Not Exist also being a great song
2. Watch Me Ready You - Odette (Aus)
Some songs take a couple of listens to really sink in, but some hit you immediately. Watch Me Read You fits in that second category. I remember my first experience with this song, straight away being entranced by the lyrical work on display. Odette’s delivery is both beautiful and sinister, with a beat-poetry-like vocal performance in the verses bringing light to the stories within the lyrics. She also shows she can belt out a chorus, with the hook highlighting her impressive vocal range. This is one of those songs which stays with you but continues to surprise when you listen. Hopefully we hear more of this later on in Odette’s career.
1. What Can I Do if the Fire Goes Out - Gang of Youths (AUS)
My number one mid-year still hasn’t changed. Although released early in the year, Gang of Youth’s lead single off their acclaimed album Go Farther in Lightness still hits me hard with every listen. From the ferocious drumming, the beautiful guitar riffs and the powerful voice of David Le’aupepe, WCIDFTFGO is a massive song. With lyrics which question one’s beliefs and faith when things go wrong, it’s a deeply personal but relatable song. It’s quite ironic that this year’s number one is about the loss of faith, whilst last year’s number one (Kanye West’s Ultralight Beam) was celebrating faith. This is a powerful track though, with its highlight being the gorgeous yet intense guitar breakdown just before the final chorus. 2017 was Gang of Youth’s year, with many tracks off their album going close to taking out my number one. This single though still reigns as the strongest track though and will definitely be a Hottest 100 top 20 (and maybe 10) contender, along with other hits like Let Me Down Easy and The Deepest Sighs, The Frankest Shadows.
Well that’s 2017 done. I will definitely be doing a review of Gizzard’s last album of 2017 this week sometime (I promise) and will try to have a look at N.E.R.D’s latest album as well as hopefully seeing films like All the Money in the World and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and reviewing both of those, as they are highly anticipated films for myself. Have a good New Year and thanks for the support. It’s been hard to keep consistent with this blog this year but next year should be a lot easier and I will try to review both films and music on a weekly basis (might be harder some weeks but we will see). Thanks.

I stared at the back of his head as we walked down the chaotic roads, not a soul in sight, but life was everywhere. The distant screams of terror from my building were now piercing, reaching out from every dark corner imaginable, and howls of satisfaction followed soon after. As disturbing as it could have been, nothing disturbed me more than to see him walking ahead of me, still breathing a full, youthful existence while my parents were rotting in some long forgotten grave. I could shoot him right now, and he wouldn’t be able to stop me before it pierced his skull. My eyes burned as bloody images flashed before my eyes, a pair of cold, dead eyes pulling me back into the world I wish I could forget.
I could hear my sister rustling upstairs, probably grabbing a late-night snack while she tried to finish another book series before sunrise. I couldn’t help myself from playfully rolling my eyes just before I curled myself into my bed, wrapping my blankets in a tight cocoon around my body. I hadn’t been able to sleep despite feeling the heavy weight of slumber on my eyes since the sun decided to set. I sighed, fumbling for my phone that sat idly beneath my sheets somewhere close by. When my fingers wrapped around its familiar shape, I brought it to my face, resurrecting it from its own slumber to find the time. It read: 11:02 pm, Tuesday, March 21. I tossed my phone further down my bed, pulling my sheets back over my head. I had forgotten what today was; it was so easy for my family to forget since we were well off enough to buy the best security systems to shield us from tonight. I felt guilty because the only reason I remembered was because we had gotten out of school earlier, which was the tall tale every year. Basically, it was a normal day for my family, droning on like any other day, going slow like every other day. Only eight more hours, and then everything truly could go back to the way things were.
I could feel the time passing by slowly as I waited for sleep to hit me. It crept up gradually, but soon my mind was blank, a sheet of darkness blanketing my eyes, sleep taking hold of me for the first time since I climbed into bed.
My eyes shot open as a loud thud pierced through the floors above. My heart pounded in my chest as I tried to collect myself. I didn’t move, waiting for the restlessness in my heart to subside before I could finally go back to sleep after struggling with it for so long. I groaned, it was probably one of the cats, making a mess of whatever they felt like. I struggled to reach for my phone, I had to know how long I’d slept before being scared out of my sleep. I fumbled for it, feeling the chill of it as it grazed my fingertips before I was finally able to get a firm grip on it. I brought it to my face, hoping it would say it was just shy of 6 am, that way, I didn’t have to worry for that much longer. It read: 2:32 am, Wednesday, March 22.
I cursed under my breath just as another soft thud echoed from above me; I turned in my bed, staring holes into the ceiling. My heart screamed in my chest, and I couldn’t have been more awake. I clenched at the sheets, pulling them just beneath my eyes, waiting for the thud to come again. All I could hear was my heart beating in my ears, and feel the way it bounced around frantically in my chest. I held my breath, counting, counting, counting the seconds as they went by. It seemed like the room was getting darker with every thrum of my heart, breathing a new kind of fear inside of me. I squeezed my sheets even tighter, begging for them to protect me from whatever was to come.
That’s when I felt it, I felt the weight shifting on my bed. I jumped, staring daggers on the other side of my bed. That’s when I caught hold of a pair of green eyes staring curiously back at me. I let out a deep breath, my heart slowly regaining its calm.
“It’s just you Jiji,” I whispered, extending my hand out for my cat. She crept towards me, her grey fur blending in with the darkness, but she eagerly leaned into the palm of my hand when she reached me. I smiled at her in the darkness as she purred against my touch. I imagined either she, or one of her siblings, was the direct cause for all the noise upstairs, and I hoped it wouldn’t be a big mess; I wasn’t fond of the thought that I would have to clean it up. I shook my head, cringing at the thought as she walked towards me, nudging her face against my arm.
Instinctively, I ran my hand along her back, but I pulled away as the dampness on her fur coated my hand. I quickly sat up, frowning at the thought that whatever she’d gotten into, it was wet and probably staining the floors somewhere. She continued to lean against me, happily disregarding the mess she was surely making. I picked her up, placing her back on the ground when I heard that familiar rustling sound. I turned my gaze to the stairs leading to the living area. I might as well go hang with my sister since we were both apparently wide awake.
The house was silent, and creepy as I closed the door behind me. I peered around, expecting my sister to be in the living room, reading some unforgettable novel, but the house was absolutely silent. I shivered—the eeriness setting in all at once. Jiji had opted out of coming with me, but I was sure she would wander up the stairs to find me, calling me back to my room where I was supposed to be at such an early hour. I pressed my lips together out of content before quietly making my way to the kitchen. To my surprise, my sister was nowhere in sight. I looked around, as if that would give me an answer to the undoubted rustling I had heard moments before. I was sure I didn’t hear her leave. I shrugged, I’d get some water, and then I would go to her room to have one of our usual restless conversations.
I grabbed a glass, fumbling through the darkness. Since our window protectors were up, there wasn’t a substantial amount of natural light to guide me, but some did peak through the small window just above our door. I stepped forward, hoping my eyes would adjust sooner rather than later. In the process, I suddenly felt something squish beneath my feet, finding its way through the spaces between my toes. I jerked my foot away, relishing in the awkward feeling. Maybe this was what Jiji had made a mess of. I sighed, figuring I should clean it up while I still cared enough to do it. I reached for the rag on the sink before kneeling to begin cleaning up the mess.
Then I felt it.
I felt the familiar warmth of my sister; I smiled, expecting my sister to jump up at me to surprise me like she did every year, but she didn’t move as I poked her in the stomach. I poked her again and again, making sure I poked her enough to finally draw her out of her prank; the smile slowly faded from my lips.
“Jisoo?” I whispered, pausing for a heartbeat, “Jisoo, this isn’t funny anymore.”
She didn’t move, even as the warmth left my words. I drew closer, crawling to where her face laid. I stared at her, her body motionless as she stared off somewhere far away. I slowly reached down, grabbing her by the shoulder, and I gently shook her. Her body felt empty against my touch. I scoffed; I couldn’t believe she would go this far to pull a prank on me. I leaned down, meeting eyes with her. My body froze as I stared at her eyes, her hair cascading her face like a veil, but it couldn’t hide the cold look that seeped from her normally warm eyes. There was an emptiness I had never seen before, but it was so clear to me as we stared at one another that there was no life to be found in them. I pulled away, and my heart felt as though it was being ripped from my chest as I realized what was happening. I couldn’t seem to breathe; the fear I’d felt before suddenly amplified to a level I’d never felt before, and I could feel the familiar sting of tears threatening to escape.
It took me a moment, but as I knelt there in shock, I realized something warm was seeping through my sweatpants, and it was warm against my hands. I looked down, the familiar warmth of my tears caressed my cheeks as a scream began to form deep in my throat. I stood up, staring down at the blood pooling around my sister’s body, and the blood freshly coating my hands. I opened my mouth to scream, but a hand wrapped firmly around my mouth, pulling me back, away from my sister’s lifeless body. Fear clawed through me. I was going to die here—I was certain of it. My tears persisted as the person pulled me closer to their body.
“Don’t make a sound,” he whispered into my ear, his warm breath sending frightening chills down my spine, “I promise I won’t hurt you, but you can’t make any noise.”
I nodded hurriedly just as he brought his other hand up, the cold sting of metal ghosted over the side of my neck. I pulled away, trying to free myself of his grip, but his hand only pulled me closer to him.
“If you want to make it out of here alive, you’ll do what I tell you…okay?”
A tear fell down my face as I nodded. It was slow, and cautious, but I could feel his body moving from behind me until he was staring me in the face, his hand refusing to trust my mouth. I froze as I looked at his large, mud brown eyes; my heart suddenly calmed, forgetting the fear entangling it for a brief moment. He brought his finger to his lip, begging me to stay quiet, but the large knife in his hand was much more demanding.
He nodded, waiting for me to nod in unison before he quickly grabbed my wrist, pulling me out of the kitchen towards the closet to the left of my bedroom door. He quickly opened it, grabbing me by the shoulders before my thoughts could catch up with my body. He directed me in front of the closet, anxiously looking around for a moment. When he turned back to me, his eyes were warm and understanding. I’d barely realized I had stopped crying. He squeezed my shoulders.
“Don’t make a sound no matter how badly you want to. Hold it in,” his eyes shifted around once more for a couple of seconds, “You have to trust me,” he paused, searching my eyes for a moment, “Trust me…alright?”
I nodded just as a set of heavy footsteps began descending the stairs. Hurriedly, he pushed me into the closet, forcing me down on the ground before closing the doors. I watched him walk over to the stairs from the openings in the doors.
“Is anyone left down here?” A deep, monotone voice questioned.
“No,” the boy whispered, pausing for a brief second, “No…sir.”
“Good.”
“Get off her!” My father’s voice rang, sending a brand new threatening sting to my eyes.
I pressed my back against the wall, fighting the urge to scream for my parents, especially as I heard them crashing down the stairwell.
“Bring them to the living room,” the deep voice ordered.
I watched, waiting for my parents to come into my line of sight. Sure enough, someone pushed them through the hall, straight into the living room. I watched as my mother fell to her knees first, and soon after my father came tumbling. My mother crawled to him, her hands bound in front of her. She covered his body as tears streamed down her face, mingling with the blood smeared all over her. My father consoled her even though his face also held remnants of a severe beating—his face black and blue, blood oozing from a cut at the peak of his left cheekbone. He knelt before my mother as a man came to stand before them, his hands wrapped behind his back with his right hand caressing his left.
I flinched at the obvious flash of a wedding ring on his finger just before he stalked over to the fireplace behind my parents. Another man followed suit, he was tall and bulky, clearly a body guard. He took his place off to the right corner of the room, blending in with the other decorations like he was supposed to. Then there was a third man, there was a pep in his step as he came to stand before my parents. He stood before them, staring at them for a second before pushing my father aside. He knelt beside my mother, and I could see the smile on his face as he grabbed her by her cheeks with one hand; he barely paused before he gave my mother’s lips a lick. She yanked away just as my father got up, ramming himself into the man. That’s when the boy came in, pulling my father away with little effort, and pushing him back down on his knees.
“Don’t you dare touch her Minsik!” my father yelled.
The man only responded with a laugh as he took a seat on our sofa, staring amusedly at my mother, his eyes never leaving her body.
“That’s no way to talk to a dear friend,” the man by the fireplace spoke.
“We’ve never been friends,” my father hissed, but his words were directed towards the man staring hungrily at my mother’s figure.
“Is that why you did it?” the man questioned, “Is that why you betrayed me, my dearest friend?”
My father finally directed his attention to the man at the fireplace, the only person who seemed to have something to say; my father bowed his head down to him as if he was giving him an offering, his hands pressed together like a prayer.
“Please, my old friend, don’t do this. I never wanted this for my family,” he paused, nodding in agreement with his own statement, “You knew that. You told me I could walk away anytime I wanted.”
“And what do you do?” the fireplace man shouted, “You betray me like I am another common thief!”
“Please,” my mother begged.
“Please what?” the man on the couch, Minsik, chuckled.
“Don’t!” my father yelled at him.
“I gave you everything,” the man by the fireplace interjected, “I gave you the clothes on your families back, the roof over their heads, the money that allows you all to live comfortably. I gave you that. I made you,” he hissed.
My father sobbed, “Please just let my family go, there is no need to kill them, yeah?”
“Why should you live after betraying us?” Minsik questioned.
“Because I made you,” my father yelled, turning his gaze towards him in response, a hateful fire brewing between them.
Minsik huffed, laughing underneath his breath, but there was nothing he could say. Instead he asked my father a question.
“You know what happens when you outlive your usefulness?”
My father turned to the man by the fireplace, who’s eyes never stopped watching my father.
“You should have never betrayed me,” he whispered.
“I’d do it again if it put you where you belong,” my father whispered back.
The fireplace man smiled a crooked smile at my father before signaling for the boy to come over to him. He placed his hand on the boys back, leaning into his ear, and he whispered something to him. I didn’t know what he was saying, nor did I want to know, but the look on the boy’s face was hard to ignore. His eyes grew big, filled with shock, and then I saw the man’s hand grab his shoulder, squeezing it for a second before his arm fell back at his side. I watched the boy grip onto his knife more firmly, staring to the ground in a daze, the shock never leaving his face.
“That’s the wrong answer,” the man whispered just as a bigger smile crept onto his lips.
The boy suddenly snapped out of his daze, staring between my parents for a second before he lunged for my mother, slashing her throat before he could think about not doing it. My mother fell forward, convulsing against the carpet she’d just cleaned. My father wailed in pain, watching my mother’s life slip away. I quickly clasped both of my hands over my mouth, fighting the sobs that were trying to crawl their way out as I watched my mother’s body slowly stop moving. That’s when the boy knelt next to my father, he paused as if my father was speaking to him, and then he jabbed his knife in the side of his neck, twisting it, making the act even more cruel than it already was.
My father’s head fell onto the boy’s shoulder, and the boy sat there, his eyes glistening in the moonlight. I could see the boy fighting back his tears just before he pushed my father’s lifeless body away. I watched him stand upright, his hands at his sides, and he seemed numb to everything he’d just done. I couldn’t keep my eyes off him as the man I’d come to know as Minsik brought himself up to him. Minsik smiled at him, placing a hand on his shoulder that was obviously meant to be more rewarding than consoling.
After a short pat, he made his way to the front door, laughing the whole way, leaving the bloodbath like it was already old news. The other man walked forward, stopping to stand at the boy’s side. He smiled, and even though there was still an evilness behind it, it also looked like the kind of smile a proud father would have after he’s witnessed his child’s first accomplishment; tears streamed down my face at the realization.
He nodded his head, making a satisfied hum, “When you’re ready, we’ll be waiting for you in the car.”
With that, he left, his guard following closely after him. The boy turned his head, glancing at my parents’ dead bodies on the ground before his gaze turned to me. I held my breath, waiting for him to come for me; he turned his gaze to the door for a millisecond before coming to me. He yanked the closet doors open, revealing my curled-up form, and it took him a long moment, but he finally knelt in front of me. I pressed my back further into the wall, half hoping that I would acquire some magical power that allowed me to walk through walls.
I gripped my shirt above my heart, staring into his eyes. They were still warm, but I couldn’t see past my parent’s blood splayed all over his face as he reached out for me. I slammed my back into the wall, turning my head away from him as I shut my eyes. I clenched my teeth, tears finding new paths down my face.
“Look at me,” he whispered after a long pause, “Look at me,” his voice resonated with demand.
I quickly opened my eyes, turning to face him again. I took in a deep breath as I looked into his eyes. In those few moments, they had changed—where once was a comforting warmth, now there was a darkness as black as the blackest abyss. I swore I could see a flash of guilt, but the darkness ate it whole before it could grow. He reached out for me again, taking my hand in his. I took in a sharp breath at how surprisingly warm his hands were. He placed his knife in my hand, forcing my fingers to close around the handle; he wrapped his hand around mine, but his eyes told me to look at him, and his face was serious all the while.
Tears streamed down my face as I stared at him—how could he do this? He looked the same age as me, and I had only just turned 16. There was something about him that was much more childlike; it could have been the way he had big teeth and eyes like a bunny. But, somehow, he had an air about him that was much more mature, even before he killed my parents. He squeezed even tighter on my hand, pulling me away from my thoughts.
“What do you want most in this world?” he asked, but after a long pause, I couldn’t find the words to speak to him, so he went on, “I killed your sister. I killed your mother. I killed your father,” he spoke, no emotion left, “You’ll never be the same after tonight,” he nodded, once again waiting for me to nod in unison, “My name is Jeon Jungkook,” he spoke softly, “Remember me, and in a few years, when you’re ready, you can kill me however you want.”
I stared at him, utterly speechless as the words left his mouth, but I couldn’t even find it in myself to shake my head in disagreement. Slowly, his hand left mine, and the coldness in his eyes sent a new kind of chill down my spine just before he got to his feet. I watched him as he stared down at me one last time, finally closing me back in the closet. I shivered as I listened to him leave me behind, my parents’ bodies a reminder of the events of the night, and the knife I couldn’t seem to let go. I brought it to my face, quickly dropping it as I saw the blood staining my skin. Fresh tears flowed from my eyes as I finally took in the large amount of my sister’s blood still marking my body. I pulled my legs close to my chest, hiding my face from the truth.
The sun peaked through the windows as our security system began opening all the windows once again. I jumped at the loud thundering. My eyes felt undeniably heavy from all the tears I’d shed. I shifted, finally letting go of my legs to grab the knife given to me. I looked at it, my reflection barely recognizable as I stared at myself. Then my eyes fell to my hand, the one he’d touched; it still felt warm as if he was still holding it. His warmth should have been consoling, but how could he console me when he was the reason I needed to be consoled? I had whispered his name all night long, a mantra I knew I’d never forget, and I gripped firmly onto the knife as the loud sirens echoed outside the window, warning me of the end of the purge, and the beginning of my new reality.
Present Day
I clenched my hand. Sometimes, I could still feel him holding my hand, no matter how unwelcome it was. I stared at the back of his head, my hand instinctively falling to the knife strapped around my thigh—the knife he’d given me. I was going to kill him with it. I was going to kill him with it after I was done killing the people that made him.
