i think the reason oliver is such a compelling character - or at least to me, he is - is because in the end…he wins! he gets what he wants and comes out on top.
in this modern world everyone is a bit of an oliver. crippling social anxiety, awkward, booksmart, and later in the film mostly queer audiences STILL find themselves relating to oliver’s struggle of how to express a desire that is so unconventional, so disturbing, so queer. normally in shows like this - shows with stunning rich people and their stunning social skills - the social outcast remains a social outcast. the queercoded character does not get their happy ending and remains the perpetual butt of the joke.
but in saltburn? saltburn almost has a gone girl sort of ending in the way the supposed villain gets what they want in the end, and we’re rooting for them! we see a mostly unexplored perspective in cinema - the perspective of the outsider, of the freak, and we see just how awful these people - beautiful shiny upper class folk - are, and then this outsider, who has been patronised and placed on a pedestal and humiliated, gets his revenge and gets everything he desired in the end. and in a world where queer, different characters are killed off or side lined or made fun off for whom or what they desire, oliver stands out, because he gets what he desires and he makes the audience root for him while he’s doing it.

I'm really surprising myself with how interested I am in this current unit on Elizabeth I of England, not least because I haven't studied British monarchs since early high school and always found the topic dull and frustrating. I think the difference is that we're not necessarily looking just at the history as in "this happened at this time" (middle school level) or "this is what happened at this time. what do people say about it, and can we trust these sources?" (high school level), but we're really looking at how history is studied and why historians reach certain conclusions, and then applying that to a historical figure. Asking why Elizabeth I has a particular image in pop culture compared to how historians see her is absolutely fascinating and I'm really enjoying it.
(It's also a testament to the Open University's approach that I, someone who only knew Elizabeth I from a couple of Doctor Who episodes and the influence her reign had on Shakespeare's plays, can easily engage with the subject area.)

This scene fucks me up so much more knowing what I do now about Yosano's backstory.
The first time I watched this scene I thought the deaths she'd seen were medical related like in a hospital and from the murder cases the ADA would get. No. IT'S FROM WHEN SHE WAS ELEVEN AND KEEPING SOILDIERS FROM DYING.
The line "OUR PATIENTS' LIVES JUST SLIP THOUGH OUR FINGERS" goes hard as FUCK knowing what yosano had seen, had done.

I wonder what a certain Bellatrix stan (fugamalefica) would think if she knew I had a headcanon that McGonagall dated Tom Riddle while were both Hogwarts students until she started to notice that he was becoming a monster and then dumped his ass? She would probably go on rants about how McGonagall isn’t that great and deserves death because of a headcanon, she also isn’t that great unlike her feminist icon Bellatrix. Which is funny because to me Minerva McGonagall is both a bad ass and a true feminist icon.

maybe i'm just out of the loop because mythology has never really been one of my interests but those popular posts where people are simultaneously completely rewriting some greek myth and treating it with the seriousness as if it actually happened were so weird to me

I wonder if the fact that so many liberal "feminists" base their feminism totally on Simone de Beauvoir and Edith Butler has a lot to do with their inability to question the most basics and being critical of what you are being served.

Astrology Observations: Aries Edition 🐏
Tumblr media
🥊Aries Suns, Aries Moons and Aries Risings all represent different modes of "attack"
Aries Sun people can be very strategic, especially if they have an Earth or Air Moon. They make for good leaders because they know how to come up with a good plan to march into proverbial battle. Generally speaking, they are the least impulsive or combative of the three. And that's not necessarily a measure of their character. They just HATE to lose. Lol so they usually don't engage in any kind of fight they don't think they can win. But, they'd also never admit this because that would be a loss. At times, they can be almost Libra-like in their weighing of various factors. Many of them (but not all) are terrible at accountability because they think more about their bottom line than who gets hurt
Aries Moons have a way of just going ham. Depending on their other placements, they may fool you into thinking they're more rational or collected. But, baby, these folks are hotheads! They fit that Aries stereotype more than any other placement. And they relish a good fight. Or, at least, getting something off their chest. With a lot of them, this soon becomes quite obvious once you get to know them. Their tantrums, explosions or savage tirades are quite legendary. But, give them a good hour to cool off and they'll be over it. A lot of them need to channel that energy into the gym, sports, dancing or martial arts.
Aries Risings are masters at "asserting dominance". Their best defense is a good offense. (Isn't that the saying in that footballing sport?) If they see they have an advantage, they take it. If they want something, they insist on it. They are dynamic. They come to you, instead of waiting for you to come to them. These folks are not afraid to make the first move and don't give a shit what other people think. They can stay so unbothered that it gets others highly bothered. It's pretty funny, especially to them. They easily piss others off and they know it. Their Aries fire is more so a lust for life and an unapologetic confidence. But, they will definitely check you if needed!
🥊Venus in Aries women have total "bombshell" energy (if they embrace/lean into it). Rihanna, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Mariah Carey. They know how to be wonderfully feminine and glamorous yet with this spicy, sassy, irreverent edge. The confidence they exude and their bold style also adds to their sex appeal
🥊 People with Mercury in Aries will sound angry and heated whenever they feel strongly about something. They just can't help it. Even if they don't intend to or aren't even mad. People may often feel attacked by them but they give great pep talks
🥊 People with Aries in their big 3: "Aries is the baddest bitch in astrology. Everyone should be so scared of us and our wrath!!!"
People with Leo, Scorpio or Capricorn in their big 3: 😅😅😅
(No, y'all are bad, too, but you're kind of like everyone's loud little brother, sometimes. He thinks he can beat everyone but he's in the second grade so we let him think that)
🥊 It's pretty common to see Aries Moon people who were raised by a single mom. (And who have tons of respect and affection for her because of it) If not, she was definitely the more dominant parent in the house
🥊 Men with Mars in Aries can definitely be dicks, if they're not balanced or self-aware. This placement is heavy masculine energy and with a man, if immature or unevolved, they can be the worst stereotype of a guy: fuckboy-ish, insensitive, selfish in bed, etc. But, many of them will also have some "come to Jesus" moment about their behavior as they get older, especially if they have squares or oppositions to their Mars
🥊 The sheer amount of feminist icons with the Sun in Aries is really impressive: Maya Angelou, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Lucy Lawless, Diana Ross, Gloria Steinem, Aretha Franklin, Reese Witherspoon. The list goes on. Aries ladies are the original girlbosses 💅🏽
🥊 Although this is Capricorn's stereotype, people with Aries placements can also be prone to workaholic behavior to avoid their feelings or issues. Or the flip side is that their work life and productivity may suffer when they are going through something
🥊Many Aries Risings have an excellent attitude when it comes to haters. Whether it's online or behind their back. They'll just shake their head at you for worrying so much about someone else or being unable to say it to their face. Then, they'll keep winning

The fact that the Duffers didn't make Max a pick me girl makes me want to kiss them on the mouth. They easily could have fallen into the trope of her putting down other girls and hating on anything feminine, but they didn't.
She's sarcastic, skateboards, goes by Max rather than Maxine, and hangs out with little boys and yet she is so excited to meet El at the end of S2! She doesn't see El as competition she sees her as a friend! During
S3 we see that Max is an actual feminist icon as she encourages El to find herself outside of her relationship with Mike. We see Max's feminine side which she is not at all ashamed of.
And the fact that they made El and Max so close after El's initial jealousy toward her in S2 feels so special to me. All of S2 Max just wants to be a part of the party, specifically she wants Mike to accept her into the party (because he's really the only one gatekeeping lol) and Max fully realizes that the reason why Mike doesn't want her in the party is because he misses El and doesnt want to feel like they're replacing her.
So it would have been so easy, made sense even, for Max to be jealous of El or to resent her. Especially after El is cold to her when they first meet. But she isn't and she doesn't! Idk I just love Max a lot and I will always be grateful to the Duffers for not Ginny Weasleyifying her.

it’s honestly very frustrating to try and see people paint alicent as some sort of karen and rhaenyra as some sort of feminist icon. newsflash: none of the women in this show are feminists. AND THAT IS OKAY!! we’re looking at a story that predates those sort of progressive ideals and it’s not fair to hold either character to such a modern standard.
rhaenyra is out for herself and for her own claim, she’s not fighting for the right of all women to sit the iron throne. this is pretty clearly spelled out for us when she tells rhaenys that baela and jacerys’ sons will inherit the iron throne. but this isn’t a criticism of rhaenyra, she’s a woman living in an incredibly oppressive time, and while it could make for a great story, it should not be her responsibility to fight for the hypothetical claims of other women. as the the legitimate heir to the throne, her only concern should be fighting to take back her crown from the usurper.
as for alicent, she can really only cling to two things: duty/honor and trying to protect her children. her whole life has been nothing but miserable. losing her mother, being pawned off to viserys by her own father, being forced to have four children while she was still a child herself. and in the aftermath of all this, she’s lost her best friend and one true love. so of course she’s bitter and resentful, and of course she’s so preoccupied with duty. all she’s done since she was 14 years old is give and give, and it’s been rotten, thankless work.
it’s pretty easy to understand why both of these women are the way they are, and to acknowledge their deep complexity. sometimes it feels like people are being willfully obtuse in order to stay loyal to their respective “teams”, and I know it’s not that deep and the end of the day, but it’s still very frustrating.

it’s uber annoying that diablo cody was interviewed about her attempts to write the script for the barbie movie and the pull quote was just “I couldn’t write barbie as a girlboss” when she said a LOT of really interesting things about how a movie this earnest would have been laughed out of the theater if she had written it in 2015! weird to think about the changes in the media landscape over a relatively short number of years that margot robbie’s barbie is being heralded (by SOME) as a Feminist Icon

Adrienne La Russa (Salvare la faccia, Beatrice Censi)—she's got kind of an anne hathaway thing going i think
Jane Fonda (Barbarella, Sunday in New York, Barefoot in the Park)—Feminist icon, LGBTQ+ rights activist since the 70s, Civil Rights and Native American rights advocate, environmentalist… she really is THE woman ever
This is round 1 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

Adrienna La Russa propaganda:

Jane Fonda propaganda:
Tumblr media
" I assume she's already been submitted but I gotta make sure. I think there's an element to movies like Barbarella or her segment of Spirit of the Dead of those having been directed by her husband, who famously made movies about her being hot, and the incredible costume design also helped, but good lord. Look at her"
Tumblr media
"Her vibes in these movies are so interesting because she, the daughter of an Old Hollywood star, went on to make both poignant dramatic movies and the some of the silliest things you've ever seen but even in the silly space adventures and sexploitations there's always this undeniable gravitas to her. It's like she's able not to take herself very seriously but at the same time never stops having this grace and elegance and makes it all work together. And she's always been very politically active which is also sexy. Her famous mugshot is from 1970 so right at the cutoff mark but come on"
Tumblr media
"She was so pretty, dear lord! She was and still us stunning. She’s great at comedy and drama."
Tumblr media
"Shes so hot im so gay for me i will let her hit me with hers car"
"Watching her in Barefoot in the Park seriously made me, a straight woman, question things"
"Gorgeous and also still getting arrested at climate protests, which is sexy behavior"
"PLEASE I LOVE HER SO MUCH"

Rulebreaker
pairing: warren rojas/rhodes x fem!reader
a/n: there is a criminally low amount of warren fics and daisy jones & the six fics in general so I'm trying to rectify that. also I listened to the Aurora album on repeat when writing this so if you haven't listened to it already go do that. requests are open for all characters if you want to send anything in. i also love chatting with all of you so send in ur opinions or thoughts :)
tw: mentions of period typical misogyny, cigarette smoking, swearing
description: the night you met warren rojas, all of your rules fly out of the window.
Tumblr media
Y/N: Being a female producer in the 70s was… how to put it delicately… absolute shit. But I tried my best. I had a list of rules to live by: don’t date anyone related to my job, never stay later than 7pm, always have more than one person in the room with you and never drink on the job. Not even coffee. I broke most of those rules the night I met Warren Rojas.
It was 9pm (rule break #1) and you had just finished mixing one of the last songs for an album you were going to show George tomorrow. You were about to head home with a cup of coffee (rule break #2) you had snatched from the snack room when suddenly one of the doors to the recording rooms slammed open and a whole gang of people poured out. The noise had startled you so much that the cup in your hand sloshed and hotstingburnoww the liquid fell onto your hand.
“Shit!” You had realized in the last moment that your little expletive caught the attention of the last people milling out, a curly haired guy and one of best known producers of the time, Teddy Price, otherwise known as your mentor. “Oh hey Teddy.”
“Y/N! I don’t think I’ve seen you here this late before.”
“Just had to finish mixing a song you know me.”
“Oh I do. That’s why it’s surprising.” You rolled your eyes with a smile and then looked over to the man standing next to him.
“Who’s the new band? Haven't seen them around here before.”
“The Six. This is Warren Rojas, their drummer. This is Y/N L/N, she’s one of the best producers out there.”
“You flatter me too much. It’s nice to meet you, Warren.”
“You too.”
“Either of you need a ride? I’m heading out soon.”
“Nah I’m fine. I’ll just go with the band.”
“Yeah I’ve got my bike.”
“You parked close?” Teddy asked with his usual protective tone.
“Just a 5 minute walk.”
“I would walk you but I’ve got to finish looking over some tapes.”
“I’m heading the same way. We can go over together.”
“You sure?” You asked as you took a sip from your coffee.
“Yeah, I’m sure the band can wait.”
“Great. I’ll see you two tomorrow.”
“Bye Teddy.”
“See you.”
You and Warren set off to navigate through the maze of recording rooms and offices. (rule break #3) He had lit up a cigarette and when he offered you one, you graciously took it, throwing out the finished coffee cup.
“So if you don’t mind me asking. Why do you call yourselves the Six if there’s only 5 of you?” Warren laughed and looked at you with a smile.
“I honestly have no idea. Something about there already being too many iconic bands with the number five in them.”
“Right well, I can’t be one to judge anyway, I can't even sing.”
“I can’t either so I think we’re on the same playing field here.” You laughed and nudged his shoulder. So he was funny on top of being ridiculously attractive.
“So how did you get into producing?” And he wasn’t being a anti-feminist asshole, unlike SO MANY people in this industry.
“Well I liked music and I would record demos for my brothers when I could. It was honestly just pure luck. I met Teddy when I was interviewing to be a secretary here. He taught me some of the ropes and then persuaded the big bosses to hire me. I really only produce for smaller names but… it’s my passion, you know.”
“As part of a smaller name, we appreciate your help.” He said with a mischievous smile whilst wiggling his eyebrows.
“Oh shush. So I guess now it’s only fair to ask how you got into The Six?”
“Well, Graham got us into this band when we were like 14 and then he persuaded his brother, Billy, to join. Then some random dude convinced us to head out here and try our luck with Teddy Price so here I am. We actually used to be called The Dunne Brothers and then we changed it for some reason, I think we all collectively decided against that name one night at a diner.”
“Well if you’re getting produced by Teddy then you have to have at least a modicum of talent.”
“Don’t know if I should take that as an insult or a compliment.”
“Take it as you want.” His eyes flickered under the streetlights as you made your way out onto the street. Warren Rojas has a majestic quality to him and well, he was also nice and exactly your type. Okay so maybe rule number #1 was meant to be broken.
“Warren! Hurry up man or we’re leaving without you.” A man yelled from one of the parked vans. He was leaning out of the window and pushing on the car horn.
“Well it seems my luck is still going strong cause that’s my bike.” You point at the black motorcycle that is parked next to the colorful van. He sent you a beaming smile as you both wandered over to where your separate vehicles lay.
“So will I be seeing you again?”
“We work in the same building so probably.”
“You know what I mean.” I stamped out the cigarette and winked at him.
“I might come around to see how you sound tomorrow.”
“I’ll be sure to be playing the drums to the best of my ability.”
“I'm sure you’re supposed to be doing that anyway.” You smirked at him as swung your jean clad leg over the motorcycle and twisted the key in the ignition.
“Warren!”
“Yeah yeah, one second. Give me your arm.”
“And why would I do that?”
“Because you’re really pretty and I want to give you my number.”
“How do you know I’ll use it?”
“I’m taking a gamble.”
“It seems like you take a lot of those.”
You held out your arm anyways and let him scribble down his number in black ink. Your helmet went over your head after he finished and you looked down at the list of numbers with a little heart next to them. So he was a sap as well.
“I’ll be seeing you, Warren Rojas.”
“I sure hope so, Y/N L/N.” You smiled and gave him a little wave before revving off. But not before you heard a last: “Warren! What the hell man I’m starving over here.” Which made you chuckle.
Y/N: I ended up going to that recording session the next day. And the next and the next. Teddy even let me mix a few of the songs. I also wrote down his number immediately after I got home. I’m pretty sure I still have the receipt where it’s written on somewhere. Anyways I ended up breaking that first rule after the tour. Warren asked me out when we were surfing. Actually I was surfing and Warren was trying to. God that was a beautiful day.
Warren: The sun was just about to set and I had given up trying to surf so Y/N and I were just sitting on our boards watching the sky turn different colors. We had been friends since that night Teddy introduced us and I was obviously attracted to her. But it was then when I realized I was in love with her. I ended up asking her to marry me at that exact same spot a few years later.
Y/N: I immediately said yes, both times. Warren and I just work. He is like a part of me I can’t bear the thought of losing.
Warren: I love her with my entire self and more. I can’t see my life any other way. I think one of the greatest things that came out of the band was not just the music but it also led me to my soulmate.
Y/N: Rule breaking is really one of the best things I could have done. I met my other half and worked with people I would consider my family. Sometimes plans just aren’t meant to be followed.
Y/N Rojas is one of the top producers in the music industry. She shared producer credits with Teddy Price on Aurora and has gone on to produce some of the biggest names in the 80s and 90s. Currently she lives on a houseboat with her husband, Warren, the former drummer of Daisy Jones & The Six and their twins, Teddy and Karen. She owns a music label (Reconstitution Records) which will be producing the newest album of the reunited band, Daisy Jones & The Six.

Wkfndjfske I FORGOT KATARA BULLIES TOPH ABOUT BEING BLIND. Like I know she's a problematic icon and a complex character who undergoes a lot of growth but I truly genuinely did forget that she was also a fourteen year old girl who Toph called sugar queen for very good reason. The specifics fade into the background after so many years and so many of her worse moments are because she is acutely hurt and defensive and also a teenager. Whereas this is just her being a teenager and lashing out because of being socially insecure, which isn't usually her wheelhouse. I'm constantly impressed by how well written she is!!!!
i know right!!!!! i love katara so much (duh) bc she's like the most realistically-written fourteen year old girl of all time. and it's so funny to me how people who refuse to acknowledge that she has flaws (despite the fact that she is of course so eminently and beautifully flawed) will simply dig their heels in if you cite any instances wherein she does something mean or out of line and they'll be like "no she was right and morally justified actually because the person she was talking to was being an asshole and victimizing her [katara voice] personally and so she wasn't being mean she was right 100% of the time and always justified and morally correct actually you just hate her and want her dead" because that's like. exactly how katara thinks. they're just subscribing to her logic (thee ultimate fourteen year old little sister logic) and then deciding that she must be correct because she thinks she's always correct and if she's always right then she is. and i find that kind of endearing because i do cherish katara and do always understand where she is coming from even when she's wrong but like. she is not an irreproachable angel who is always justified in her rage and vitriol. she is a realistically fallible teenager who is in a lot of pain and fucks up a lot and has a tendency to dig her heels in when she's wrong. and that's something i absolutely adore about her!!!! so it's really such a shame that so many people who claim to love her will put her on a pedestal and blindly agree with everything she says and does, because it's a really reductive way to engage with her character, and it's also just plain dehumanizing to reduce such a rich and nuanced character into "girl whose actions should always be taken at face value because she is simply a vehicle onto which we can project our owns thoughts and feelings." i mean, didn't you know that stripping her of all her agency and making her a flawless site of projection (usually for shipping purposes) is feminist actually?? and if you ever point out her flaws (even in a loving, celebratory, or humorous way) it's because you hate women??? didn't you know that feminism is when women don't have flaws they have to learn and grow from, and instead just kind of sit there??????? which is, incidentally, how you get the trash fire that is natla. anyway. i love katara so much, but i really do hate it here -_-

decade accurate marauders era wardrobes - lily evans

hair: long and auburn, often worn down and parted in the middle. styled with curtain bangs and two chin length pieces that frame her face.
clothes: consists of muted shades of brown, red, green, and yellow. waistcoats, fitted tops tucked neatly into trousers and skirts, turtleneck sweaters, dresses with short hemlines, and the occasional band tee. lots of plaids, suede, and buttons.

miniskirts were a popular but controversial item of clothing that have origins in 1960s london. prior to the 60s, it was completely unheard of for a skirt's hemline to ever be above the knee. however, during the course of the early to mid 60s young women in london began to wear their skirts shorter and shorter. as the miniskirt began to grow in popularity, it also gained negative attention as well with critics dubbing it as "mad" "vulgar" and "just awful". despite the heavy criticism, the miniskirt only continued to rise in popularity amongst women all over the globe, and with this played a key role in growing feminism and womens liberation movements. the miniskirt was comfortable, didn't restrict movement, and most importantly, allowed women to have autonomy over their bodies and how they wanted to present themselves. the history and meaning behind the miniskirt is why i feel lily would especially love miniskirts and still wear them despite the fact that they somewhat lost popularity in the 70s. she is a canonically brave and intelligent woman who stands firm in her opinions and isn't afraid to make them known. i believe she would have strongly identified in the feminist movements of the time and would wear miniskirts as a sort of her own personal protest.
i don't really see her as a big t-shirt wearer tbh. t-shirts were largely viewed as undergarments until t-shirt printing became easier and more accessible in the 60s and 70s which began the trend of graphic/slogan tees. she definitely loved abba and fleetwood mac though so they're the exception.
for some reason waistcoats are very lily to me. they came in all sorts of sizes and designs and i know she looked good in every one she had.
shoes: clogs, knee high lace up boots, and loafers. not much of a platform on them but still very 70s.
Tumblr media
accessories: oversized square framed sunglasses, newsboy cap, headband scarf and a small purse.
Tumblr media
THE one and only iconic lily evans cap™
she has an array of different colored and patterned scarfs that she uses to tie her hair back with.

How dare Narcissa not worship Bellatrix and her snake man lover who was trying to force her son into being a murderer in order to punish his father. Honestly I am surprised that she didn’t say Andromeda was her least favorite because she married a muggleborn wizard because that would break poor Bellatrix’s black and shriveled little heart because she can’t brag to her snake man lover about how “pure” her family was.
