Pre Leon his father was one of the best men the Greasers had in their ranks. He was second in command of the Angel Ridge Demons. His father's reputation began to slip as Hugo began drinking more and more heavily.

The drinking turned to yelling which ultimately lead to his father beating Leon’s mother; Angelica. This carried on for years, and his mother became very good at hiding bruises. It wasn't until Leon was about 10 years old that Leo stood up for his mother. From there the lashing was directed at Leon anytime his mother set his father off. After an altercation which landed both the men in some hot water during Leon's early teenage years the abuse tapered off, his father now knowing Leon could hold his own.

He spent most of his childhood anywhere that wasn’t his parent’s trailer in Hillcrest. Most of the time you could find him loitering around the junkyard which is what sparked the beginning of his automotive career. 

Leon had always loved the 'Greaser' lifestyle and emersed himself in their world pretty early on in life. As he got older and with a little bit of help from his nepo-baby privilege he rose in the ranks. When his father's drinking got to the point it was affecting his ability to do his job Leo often found himself stepping in for him. Leon finally burnt the bridge of any sort of relationship with Hugo when he usurped his position from the unfit man.

Through working odd end jobs Leo rebuilt his first passion project when he was 16. His bike is his baby.

Flirtatious by fault not by nature

Growing up he took pride in the ‘Menace to Society’ title he had received from the local PD. By the time he was 14, he had a rap sheet that was as long as he was tall.

Has really only had one serious relationship. His ex-girlfriend being the ‘Soc Princess’ herself. He was deeply wounded by her when she flipped on him to save herself once they were caught sneaking around. He didn’t care that she lied and had gotten him locked up because of it he more cared that he let someone in and they double-crossed him. He’s still pretty pissed she narced on him when the only thing ‘wrong’ he did was let his guard down and let her get to close.

He can be a bit of a douche but to his friends and fellow Greasers, he’s loyal to the end and would take a bullet for them.

Cass's clothes don't really affect her at rest, since it's just jeans and a long sleeved shirt, and is also The Same jeans and shirt they've been wearing for ages. As for how she is when idle, Cass has pretty much mastered the art of mirroring other people's body language, so generally if she isn't doing anything else is particular, she's doing that.

glance: At first glance, what stands out most about your OC's appearance? What's their distinguishing feature?

Despite all the other weird quirks of their appearance, the first thing about Kellen that probably draws the eye is their hair since it's so voluminous and bright. That said, in my mind their defining feature is the snake they replaced a couple of their ribs with, even though practically speaking basically no one would ever see it. But like if I ever commissioned art of them it would definitely be on display.

I don't think Danny is conceptually against dressing up, but they are the sort of person to be like,, Generally Uneasy with it for gender reasons. Like he's still got the suit he wore to prom, but he kinda fuckin hates it, but he also doesn't really know what else would be better. So, he'll do it if he has to, but they'd really rather just avoid those kinds of events. I however, know that they'd kill it in like, yk thranduil from the hobbit movies? yeah that kind of outfit.

I like to think of Minerva's night-to-night look as being Weebcore Catboy Assembled Entirely From Articles Stolen From Thrift Stores And Corpses, with his more extravagant fits being basically straight up Jobu Tupaki from Everything Everywhere All At Once.

motion: How does your OC move? How does their clothing help or hinder their range of motion? Are they flexible, coordinated, clumsy?

Corin's build is deceptively slender- he's actually quite the powerhouse physically and when he moves it's very clear that he knows it. He has decades of combat training under his belt from instruction under various tutors hand picked by Corliss, as well as under Prince Arundel himself, so in situations where he's on edge you can see him defaulting back into patterns of movement characteristic of a martial artist. In general, he's quite flexible, decently coordinated, and far from clumsy. Unfortunately, his preference for tight-cut suits can sometimes be limiting on his range of motion, but in the sport he partakes of most often he's rarely wearing much at all ;)

wardrobe: How big is your character's wardrobe? Do they wear things threadbare, or can they afford new clothes often? Are they any good at mending and repairing their own clothing?

Harper's wardrobe isn't extensive, but it's bigger than it once was since they've gotten a permanent haven. It mostly consists of variations on black shirt + black pants + black waist/coat, and though they do have the dough to buy new clothes pretty often, they also wear through things pretty quick (the duties of a Scourge are not gentle on one's clothes). Thankfully, their prior years of equally violent activities, without the resources of having status in the Camarilla, have taught them how to fix things up well enough to keep wearing them.

born and raised in portland, oregon, ash never really fit in with her family very well. 

her parents were very strict and religious, something ash very early on realized she wanted nothing to do with. however, this would prove to make life very difficult for her at home. especially when ash realized she was gay.

not wanting to pull her punches with her parents and being the rebel that she had become in the household, ash came out to them fairly early on. this resulted in her parents doing everything in their power to get rid of her “lesbian urges”, including abusing her at home and sending her to conversion therapy camp.

ash did really well on the soccer team in high school, and it was looking like she would be offered a college scholarship, but during her senior year, she ruptured her acl and had to undergo surgery, which pretty much took the chance away from her.

while her family easily could have paid for a college education, ash didn’t want to be tied to them more than necessary, so she packed her things and moved to seattle.

she got a job as a bartender, and has been working there since. it works well with her personality, and oftentimes leads to her finding a girl to pickup by the end of her shift – always a nice treat.

trying to cope with the trauma of her teenage years and in an effort to avoid dealing with most things in life, ash got into a bad habit of drinking too much, both at work and on days off, which eventually escalated to abusing drugs sometimes.

six years ago, ash started working for audrey as a delivery driver as well, and there’s nothing ash wouldn’t do for her.

her girlfriend of four years somewhat recently left her due to it, and after her having held ash down for the time they had been together, ash is back to sleeping with anything femme with a pulse, and is spiraling more than ever before, while still trying to get her head back above water on her own.

ash isn’t very selective about who she makes friends with. if you’re nice to her, she’ll be nice to you. while she’s very good at quickly figuring out whether or not you’re worth her time, she will be very slow to judge you and give everyone a fair chance. once you are close with her, she will be very loyal – but she will also expect that back.

before the island...

Becca’s parents split up right before she started kindergarten, but oddly enough, it was an incredibly ammicable separation. Her parents always made sure that Becca was priority while she was little, and explained to her many times and in many different ways that they still loved each other, even though they weren’t together, they just loved each other in a different way. This earned her a pretty good relationship with the both of them until she hit her pre-teens and her father moved and began interested in town politics. Not much later, Becca’s mother got a job that would be taking her to the other side of the country and while the discussion of taking her to Boston with her was talked about, it was later settled that Becca would live with her father in Cottage Grove until she finished high school. This is when her relationship with her father started to grow turbulent and has only gone downhill since.

She had a best friend back in Cottage Grove named Jacobi, a witty and sensical boy who played videogames and wrote code at what seemed like all hours of the day. While an innocent friendship for most of their teen years together, it wasn’t until they graduated that things started to change and they did try to date for a few months. It was weird, though, but before Becca was able to come up with a gentle way to break up with him she was shipped off to the retreat.

As much as Cottage Grove has made her life with her dad pretty difficult, she actually loves it more than she ever remembers loving Seattle. She loves the woods and being within driving distance of the ocean.

Becca has genuinely no idea what she was going to do after high school ended, which only amplified her father’s annoyance for her incompetence.

after the island...

Waking up in the rough waters, Becca had to swim to safety with all that she had. Upon clambering onto nearby rocky shore, she was able to finally catch a breath but only just barely. With dread, she thought she was entirely alone, lost and left for dead on the slippery rocks. However, when she heard a yell out it startled her so badly that she lost grip and slipped, hitting her head on the way down along the sharp rocks. After a moment of groggy head-spinning, Becca clutched at her hairline just in time to see a figure start rushing towards her in what felt like slow-motion. Unable to speak, the world was spinning, her eyelids fluttering. Quickly, Becca passed out, majorly concussed she didn’t regain full conciousness until 2 days later, drifting between restless sleep and nausea. Now, upon waking and finally feeling better, she’s discovered that she can’t remember much of the weeks that lead up prior to the plane trip, she barely even remembers that. Can your characters help her piece it together?

Distinguishing features: Bora would say that people often say her eyes are the feature that they notice first if she’s got her head up. Who does s/he take after; mother or father?: Neither. She refuses to talk about them and she says that she has nothing in common with them. She’ll tell you that she’s stubborn like Jumin.

How does s/he dress or what do they typically wear? Big hoodies. Often two jackets put together, a hoodie, and a sweater over that. Sometimes sweat pants and tennis shoes, or thick boots. That’s her comfort zone. She starts to branch out her style a bit more when she starts living with Jumin, wearing more dresses and getting more comfortable with her sense of style. 

Health: Decent. Ever since having moved in with Jumin, she’s not sick as often and not as tired. But, she’s got a long way to go. She’s got a lazy eye that needs correcting, so she’ll often need to wear a patch with it. She’s got some lasting PTSD from the lack of attention to her health for quite some time, but they’re working on it with doctors and therapists. 

Background: 

Bora was born to a family that didn’t care much about her in the slightest. Her parents loved her brother and didn’t care much for her at all. No matter what she did or said, they didn’t pay her any attention. She felt like she was a shadow to them for a long time and when she started going to school, that was when they started getting harder and harder to deal with. They wanted her to make good grades, prove herself to be just as good as her brother, etc. She had a lot more of a hard time in school, she didn’t learn as fast, she took a lot longer to learn what took her brother a few weeks. 

She was never good enough to them. They never let her forget that fact. She was constantly verbally abused by them. Her only solace was her brother, who loved her and believed in her. He saw the best in her and she saw the best in him. Even though their parents cared about him more, Bora never judged him or blamed him or it. She loved her brother so much. They were inseparable. He was a lot older than Bora, too. 

There was a good six year age gap between the two of them. However, her brother was always looking after her, making sure she ate, and that she was rewarded when she studied hard. Their parents just... weren’t good people to Bora. Not going into extreme detail. 

It grew to the point when her brother couldn’t take it anymore, and he decided enough was enough. He started to compile evidence against their parents so he could leave and “adopt” Bora. 

She deserved to grow up without them hurting her like that. 

Unfortunately, there was an accident and her brother died as a result of it. Bora was so distraught about it, and her parents got a lot worse. They started to really blame her for everything and she decided that she couldn’t take it. She packed up a big bag, taking only what she knew her parents wouldn’t tell the police she  “stole”, and the photograph her brother gave her of the two of them since she couldn’t take any more of his things. 

Armed with only a two big coats and some jeans, she became a runaway for a few months, surviving on the kindness of others. Until she got a message from a stranger one day on a phone she found left abandoned in the park. She decided to help the stranger, and wound up in the apartment with the RFA. They were alarmed she was a kid, and alone. 

It took some coaxing, but Seven came to see her at the apartment to talk things over with her because they couldn’t leave a kid there. She admits that she ran away from home because... it wasn’t okay. He doesn’t ask more about it to her face, but promises he won’t send her back there. Since it’s the holidays, they arrange for her to stay with Jumin since he’s the safest for the time being. They also need to find out who tricked her. 

Jumin discovers real fast that she’s been hurt a lot. He can’t bring himself to send her away to another family after the holidays. She’s just brought a lot of life to his house and to Elizabeth. He spends a lot of time learning how to become a good dad to her, because this tiny girl is plagued by night terrors and just needs someone. He realizes he’s that somehow, even if he has to learn how to be a good dad.

As the story continues, her life with the RFA becomes a Found Family AU. It plays out with each route in the game with some differences after she’s adopted by Jumin, going from Jumin > Jaehee > Zen > Yoosung > Seven. I’ll have to find the bigger post where I wrote out her timeline to add to this post. In the end, all things are fixed, Bora and the RFA are a family, and Vanderwood winds up joining later as her bodyguard.

riley shaw was born and raised in the outskirts of lakeview, maryland. the family struggled for the most part, both their parents were high most of the time, and riley quickly learned to take care of themselves. 

growing up, riley never really fit into the binary. they never really subscribed to the idea of gender or what that meant, maybe because they were void of any guidance from their parents, but it is something they are grateful for to this day.

riley did relatively well in high school, despite getting into smoking weed under the bleachers with the other outcasts and the older kids. 

it wasn’t until high school riley realized that her parents were the town dealers. it made sense with how many weird people would normally come around the house, but it also meant that other kids in school would push them further away, their parents constantly telling them they were’nt allowed to be around riley.

out of high school, riley got a job at ink’d as a tattoo apprentice. a job that fit their creative self well.

they’ve had some relationships here and there, but nothing too serious, mostly just slept around.

two: she’s actually pretty good at sewing as long as something can be hand-stitched. her family didn’t have money for new clothes so being able to patch up rips and tears was a necessity.

three: she’s a good singer, though she thinks she’s terrible and insists she can only play the guitar. the only person she’s sang for at this point is marnie.

four: sade has never seen the ocean until now. though she finds it beautiful, she’s also frightened of it’s unpredictability and the breadth of its power.

What is the difference between sex and gender?

Very often discussions about what it means to be transgender ends up in a quarrel about the difference between sex and gender. Some argue that there is no difference. Others that you cannot understand human beings without distinguishing between the two.  Here follows a pretty clear explanation.

Some days ago I got the following anonymous tumblr-question:

I don’t know if you answer this kind of questions, but my friend just came out as trans to his family and I really want to support him, and I feel like I should start by understanding him and the trans community as a whole better, as well as being more familiar with concepts of gender and sex, etc. So I wanted to ask if you have anything I could start with to begin understanding all of this better ?(literally keywords to google can work or books/articles,anything works!) 💜💜

The map versus the world

I think that much of the confusion found in online discussions about sex and gender is that many people think the map is exactly like the world itself. But when you think about a map of Times Square in New York, as this one...

... it is very easy to see that this 2D rendering is nothing like what Times Square looks like, feels like, sounds like and smells like in the real world. 

The map is a very simplified abstraction containing symbols that are there to help us navigate the real Times Square.

The same applies to language, including scientific concepts. The world itself is so insanely complex and “messy” that there is no way simple, human made, words and concepts can capture it all. 

The five dimensions of sex and gender

Originally English had one word, one sign,  to capture the complexity of what it means to be a man or a woman, namely “sex”. That  word was used  to capture at least five very different phenomena:

1. BIOLOGICAL SEX

Ultimately biological sex is  about gametes: sperm and eggs. In biology males are those who  produce sperm and females are those who produce eggs. Sperm meets egg and viola, you have a baby.  This is a fact. We would not be here without them.

Hormones decide whether a fetus ends up as a human being producing eggs or sperm, and most often – but not always – this hormone production correlates with  relevant chromosomes, XY in males and XX in females.

2. SEXUAL CHARACTERISTICS

Hormones also trigger the development of sexual characteristics. The primary sexual characteristics (genitalia) develop early on. The secondary sexual characteristics (facial hair growth, breasts etc.) appear during puberty.

Most often the development of secondary sexual characteristics follows from the biological sex, but there is a lot of variation and no absolute clear boundaries between the two sexes as regards looks.

3. GENDER EXPRESSIONS

While the development of sexual characteristics is triggered by hormones, the development of gender expressions are (for the most part) not. 

Among gender expressions we find clothing (skirts vs. trousers), mannerisms (crossing or not crossing your legs when sitting) and even interests (knitting versus wrestling). 

We know that these gender expressions are cultural and not biological for two important reasons: They differ from culture to culture (Roman men wearing togas and Scotchmen wearing kilts) and from individual to individual. Where I live (in Norway) most men are not afraid to cross their legs when seated, and women do love jeans.

4. GENDER ROLES

Gender roles refers to the way cultures divide tasks between the two genders, informally and even legally. 19th century European and North American had no right to vote. The majority of nurses world wide are women, even today.

Few of these gender roles have a firm biological basis, as the political and cultural changes that took place during the previous century has shown us. 19th century women in “the West” were supposed to be emotional, irrational and inferior to men in most ways. They were therefore not fitted to a life of leadership, the men said. They were, on the other hand, considered more nurturing than men, which made them the obvious choice for child rearing. 

Since then women have proven themselves capable in all strands of life, and many men are very good at taking care of kids.

5. GENDER IDENTITY

Gender identity is your deep felt sense of being a man or a woman (or neither or both). Most people (non-transgender cis people) never reflect on their gender identity, because no one is challenging it. 

Transgender people, on the other hand, as well as some intersex people, are forced to reflect on the difference between biological sex and gender identity, because they strongly, continuously and persistently feel that their sense of being a man or a woman (or some other category) does not match their legally assigned gender. 

People may disagree as to what causes this dissonance between biological sex and gender, but there is no denying that the mismatch exists. 

The sense of being a gendered being is undeniable

Gender dysphoria is real. The sense of being forced to live as the wrong gender is real. This means that the sense of being a gendered person is real. Gender identity is not the same as sex.

Anti-trans activists will often talk about transgender and intersex people being statistical outliers, saying that they do not in any way represent normalcy. There are actually as many intersex people as there are redheads in the world, but let us, for the sake of argument, say that they are right about this. This still does not change the fact that for many people several of these five variables do not match. 

If you have not done so already, you should take a look at the TED Talk of Emily Quinn, an intersex woman with XY chromosomes and “balls”, as she puts it. She looks like a woman, expresses herself as a woman and clearly thinks of herself as a woman. She is real, and through her very existence she provides clear proof of gender identity not being the same as biological sex.

I love the following photo of her, because it makes it so clear that she is using feminine gender expressions to express her real gender, XY chromosomes be damned.

Intersex or transgender

One important difference between intersex people like Emily Quinn and transgender people is that it is relatively easy to track down the biological roots of an intersex condition, being those chromosome variation (XO, XXX, XXY, XYY) or hormonal variation during the development of the fetus.

The transgender gender mismatch might also have roots in genes and hormonal variation (most medical experts seem to think so), but most often it becomes visible as an intense conviction of being “another” gender.

This has led some anti-trans activists to dismiss feelings in general as not being “real”. I remember discussing all of this with one such person, who desperately demanded a clear and unambiguous definition of what it means to be a man and woman, and it had to be based in visible biology. My attempts at telling him that emotions are real too had no effect.

But they are. Emotions are as real as genitals and chromosomes, and if someone continuously and persistently tell us that they are a man or a woman – in spite of all the harassment and social exclusion – you’d better believe there is something real causing that experience.

Mental illness

At this point in gender discussions I have often noticed that those who want to harm transgender people reach for the “mental illness” card. Sure, the feelings might be “real”, they say, but trans people are wrong. 

The map tells these people that Times Square is square. There is no room for circles. So trans people are delusional or perverted. Because science!

The consensus in medical circles is that this is not the case. Trans people are not mentally ill. They are as well equipped to navigate the complexities of life as cis people. They are more likely to be stressed out and depressed, for sure, but that is because they find themselves invalidated and harassed on a regular basis, not because they are mentally ill. 

The American psychiatric manual, the DSM-5, and the international health manual, the ICD-11 are both very clear: Being trans is not a mental illness. 

It is not all about gender expression

Some lesbian trans-exclusionary “radical feminists” (TERFs) try to use their own life experience to explain away the gender variance of trans people. 

Queer culture is full of people who identify as their assigned gender, they argue, but who nevertheless violate the norms of gender stereotypes. There are gay men with feminine gender expressions and lesbian, masculine, butch women.

The argument is that trans people are basically cis people who mistake the desire to express  masculinity and femininity through clothes, mannerism and musical taste for a different gender identity.  When people who used to think of themselves as masculine lesbian women come out as transgender men, they are simply dismissed as deluded women by the TERFs.

They have clearly no idea of how gender dysphoria affects a transgender person’s life. The suffering can be tremendous. You do not think about transitioning on a whim.

And here’s the thing: There is as much variation as regards masculine and feminine expressions and interests among trans people as there is among cis people. 

For sure, great many trans women make use of feminine gender expressions to celebrate their womanhood and get affirmation from those around them. But in this they are no different than cis women, which the flourishing fashion and cosmetic industries can attest to. 

There are butch trans women, in the same way that there are masculine cis women. There are femme trans men, in the same there are feminine cis men.

In other words: Gender expression does not always parallel gender identity.

A postscript on the term biological sex

Some transgender people do not like to talk about “biological sex.” They argue that a transgender woman is and has always been a “biological woman” even if she has not undergone hormone replacement therapy and/or surgery. It is the cultural assignment of a gender after birth that makes the difference, they say.

I understand the argument. They are not wrong.

But keep in mind that biologists use the words “sex” and “gender”, “male” and “female” differently than we do in everyday speech.  To use the map metaphor: Similar symbols can refer to different things.

We need to be able to compare biological sex with experienced gender. It is the only way you can make sense of gender dysphoria and the way many trans people feel alienated from their own bodies. This is why I have used the term “biological sex” throughout this article.

Conclusion

The gender mismatch of transgender people is as real as the sex/gender match of cis people. The very existence of transgender people proves that sex is not the same as gender.
