Why New Parents Need to Take a Break From the News (and What They Should Do Instead)
In the months after my kids were born, the news cycle would send me into tailspins of anxiety and fear. The Penn State sex-abuse scandal and the Newtown shootings paralyzed me for days—I wept while changing diapers, wept in the bathtub, wept while pushing the stroller down the street. What might have been (merely!) horrifying pre-kids was now incapacitating. For my own mental health, I had to stop reading the news and looking at social media.
Take a Media Fast
Judging from the conversations in my moms’ groups, these feelings aren’t at all unusual. New parents are especially vulnerable to anxiety, says Laura Venuto, a New York City therapist specializing in postpartum mental-health issues. “Sleep deprivation and hormones exacerbate mood and anxiety symptoms. With new parenthood comes a heightened awareness that you’re suddenly not only responsible for yourself, but also a small child in what sometimes seems like a dangerous world.”
Dr. Venuto suggests a total news-media fast or at least a major reduction, corralling your news into 10 or 15 minutes (“In the morning! Not before bed!” she says), and then doing something pleasurable, like playing with your baby or calling a friend. For those worried that being out of touch means slacking off in their political activism, she gently suggests cutting yourself some slack: “If you’re a new parent, you’re not going to be making changes on a global scale. You’re in survival mode. You can put in a call to your representative, and that can be enough.”
Practice ‘Containment’
Lissa Hunsicker Kenney, a social worker in Brooklyn who counsels trauma survivors, also recommends “containment”—the first line of treatment for anxiety—as a first step. “Turning off your iPhone is containment—because it’s so easy for it to become uncontained. It just scrolls and scrolls, and it’s endless.”
So what are we supposed to do, instead? (Besides take care of our kids, I mean.) I asked Lifehacker readers, and my own new-mom friends, what media they turn to for good escapist distraction. I didn’t vet all the answers (though I did nix anything that had “horror” in its IMDB description—what about “non-disturbing” did these people not understand?) so do your own research before leaping into something totally unknown. They’re a good mix of classics, favorite sitcoms and adventure shows, a few kids’ shows and books, comics, and pretty much the entire oeuvre of the BBC.
Ideally, this list will remind of you of beloved books, TV shows, and movies that you’ve enjoyed in the past and will be soothing entertainment now, while you’re still in the sensitive new-parent stage. I read all of Jane Austen at night instead of mindless smartphone scrolling; others swear by sitcoms: “When my son was born we very quickly figured out we had to stop watching Breaking Bad and Walking Dead and just ended up re-watching Parks and Rec on a continuous loop for like three years,” one commenter wrote. Wing verse babs Pt 2!
Wulf - Albatross. These birds are built purely for soaring long distances and rely heavily on the wind for it too. I think Asgardians share a trait of being a lot more older looking and layered in how they're a bit more primordial. Wulf is a big ass bird man and in the wing verse, I think that's what makes it mostly obvious that he isn't human. And since everyone in Asgard has giant wings, I think he and Edith tend to think of stuff like personal wing space.
Edith - Great horned owl. A bird that's well known for living in forests and is widely known for being incredibly smart and intimidating at times. Perfect for Edith who relies on intimidating people for her job and also owls are really good fliers with neat wings that can clip corners really well and fit inside small places which works for Edith's job.
Lace - Lovebird. The most ridiculous bird for this very terrifying man. It's the FUNNIEST thing to me that Lace is so scary and yet he has these bright and pretty wings that are constantly fluttering and stretching out. I think he shifts his wings into different types of wings constantly, much like dragonfly or leather wings. Lace is rather happy with his wings, believing them to be pretty and possibly the only good things about his appearance. He takes great care of them and actually has ridiculously good wings due to the fact the government want their weapon to look good too.
Adonai - Cuckoo. You can. Guess why. I mean, a bird that is famously known for making other birds assume that the chick they care for is their own. Doe is aware of this and finds that little fact about themselves very amused by it, once they learn what exactly a cuckoo is after all. But Doe is used to shifting a multitude of different wings, often for fun or for work. I'm not entirely sure what wings their alters would have yet tbh but Addie tends to have bright and fun wings, Venus often takes on raven wings and Mirror? Well, you can guess with their name.
Pie Trio - Everyone thinks Magpies. It's in their main name for crying out loud and the black and white wings seem to be a give away. No. Its chicken wings. They're chickens. Chose these because they're birds that often stay together and also I think a hen house perfectly represents how the trio were often inside and kept in a "cage" for so many years. And also like chickens, none of the trio are capable of flight. Partly due to the fact that Iris clips all of her properties, but Peach is permanently clipped while Dae and Mordecai have too much damage to their wings to ever even hope of flying, though it wasn't like any of them knew that they could fly in the first place though.

BNA verse pt 2!
Oh yeah we back.
Adonai - Same stuff with Ava tbh, if the show ever proved for more humans to get the mixed Beastman dna but unless the show later proves that it happens more than to the main girls, its gonna be a no go. Anyway, Doe is an arctic fox and they are VERY aware of the fact that yes, they're gorgeous, dear! Models with Mahogany and has a....tension filled rivalry with them, which doesn't help when they're particularly teasing in order to get that cute little bleat-yowl they so adore. Pampers their sister far too much and forces Ava into spa treatments.
Edith - Lioness!!! Not a cop lmao but uhhh...probably some sort of bodyguard to help Beastmen into the city? Lives with Wulf as lions don't do well one their own and he's the only one she trusts to shave her mane when it grows. Big ass crush on Peach and frequently visits her with gifts....incredibly obvious because she immed purrs when Peach @ sight. Um. Wild in fighting jesus christ you would think she was trained by Silver Wolf hahaha. Also has joined Ava on a few trips to the human city and can easily say that yeah, humans suck.
Wulf - Lion! Big ass sunshine man and you would think that he was a tiger tbh. Hell, might make him and Edith ligers who knows. Friends with...benefits(?) To Pascal and Mimi but really Wulf...no one knows what he does? Often found randomly around the city helping others and it would be funny if it weren't for the fact that he's over 6'0 and ripped while also somehow sneaking up on you. Delighted for almost any sort of friend tbh and often likes to put his trust in new people in order to give them a better chance in the city before they resort to crime. Big kitty cat man who just gets happy to lay in the sunshine and purr when Edith finally agrees to join the nap pile with Ragnarok, their miniature pet equine.
The Trio - Cocker Spaniel Beastmen! Very fancy looking, even with their ears or hair, but uh...very different?? Peach is somewhat happy to catch the attention of Edith, while also taking time to aid children and women Beastmen for better lives after spending so long caught under someone else's thumb. Morde is...a very yappy man who still works around and under Flip and while he isn't happy, is definitely more than willing to let people assume things about his type of Beast form so long as he can get the job done...and eye up any pretty people he spots. Dae? Well...there's something dark and snarling about him once, but he does his best to shove it down while making sure to never show his fangs and keeling his ears or hair freshly curled. Works with Finn and mother hens Morde and Peach while fighting the urge to not do it to someone else.
Lace - Wolverine. Lies and says he's a badger and dyes his fur in certain places to appear so. Still a librarian and still a mess, gets nervous at the idea of having to mix with other Beasts, let alone humans. Still, Lace wants to appreciate a world where they can get along and tries to advocate a peaceful world between Beastmen and Humans....even if he's exactly what humans advocate against. Got badly assaulted by a human when he was a child and Lace often doesn't feel like bringing it up unless someone else does first. Sometimes there's more to his story but ah...you don't want to hear about any of that! Just let him get you a book and then you can leave. Please. Please go.

Bam! Here's lil thoughts about my muses and gags since I saw this on twitter! Anyone who isn't here doesn't like gags.
Ava: Fangs and the way her jaw is shaped makes things an issue at times but Ava likes to bite more so bars or ball gags are best to bite down on if she can't sink her teeth into a neck.
Mimi: Loves ball gags on her partner and has a certain love for external dildo gags but is often rather open to anything else so long as it isn’t anything too excessive or tape/covering her partner’s mouth with her own hand. Particularly since she’s worried about hurting her partner with her strength.

Morde: Gags are...useless on someone who can speak with his mind, but Morde still likes the feel and look of them and likes the rush of embarrassment that can come with some teasing on it at times. Likes more sensual or smutty gags?? Just not tape or bridle since it was used in a lot of “discipline” sessions when he was younger. It’s a more visual level of control that makes Morde melt often
Lace: Likes cloth gags and ball gags, probably especially likes the ones that have a little bows around the back of your head. Lace gets very flustered at those ones. Tends to cover his mouth during intense moments, especially if a partner is trying to make him be loud or if they're in a morw public place.
Doe: Loves seeing partners in internal dildo gags or with ball gags since it makes it all the more cuter to tease their partner with. Likes headgear stuff since it helps take away their senses or they enjoy cloth gags since Doe has bitten through metal before and doesn't care for choking on the scent of a hand pressed against their face.
