This book has has so much power in it and some many Nobel Prize laureate. Clinton has included the right amount of detail for the age group in most cases and her quote choice are just the right mix.. Boiger's art is beautiful and well-thought-out. Each one suits the subject and the style pulls them together. I have included the countries each of the 13 women hail from. Each woman is from a different country and broadly there are countries from most regions of the globe. If I have one wish for inclusion it would have been for a map with little icons showing where each woman is from. Especially important for Libarain Leymah Gbowee. Liberia is not a country easily found on a map, depending on the level of education Kenya and Pakistan may face similar issues. Though I guess that makes it a potential learning experience for adults and children alike.

What I forgot to comment on in the review for She Persisted was the intelligent framing illustrations created by Boiger. She has created a museum of world-changing women for young girls to browse. What we are seeing is one display in that museum at a time. It looks like a lovely and comfortable space to be in, which is exactly what you want in an inspirational space.

I've written up a little on each of the thirteen entries on my goodreas.

I want to include the dedications here because I really like them. "In memory of my Grandmother, whose persistence, curiosity and love inspire me every day. — C.C. To my daughter, Vanessa, and to children everywhere around this precious globe. — A.B." I'm not at all surprised that Chelsea dedicates a book to her grandmother. This is Hillary's mother, Dorothy Rodham, for more on that relationship see Grandma's Gardens. These dedications feel more personal than those of the previous book, while it's not a complaint I think the dedications of She Persisted would have suited this better with the reference to Sophie Scholl.

Batcows and millionaires

Of all the things he could do on a Wednesday night, Danny didn't think he'd be following the last wishes of a ghost cow but life takes its twists and turns.

With Wulf's help and a lot of persuasion he managed to translate what the spirit was trying to tell him, apparently "Batcow" wasn't meant to be a ghost, but neither did she wish to leave her former owner alone.

She was worried about him, how he would take it, and refused to leave until the Ghost King himself promised to take care of Damian and let him know she was in a better place. Again, Danny could have refused her request, but he thought about Cujo, he thought about how he followed him everywhere, about the time the GIW captured him and almost killed him, and he understood a little, so he agreed.

So, the Ghost King ended up in the back of a mansion (of course the owner had to be a millionaire, damn it, couldn't he be a farmer?), watching Damian Wayne stare at the barn with melancholy. Danny noticed his hands were shaking.

With a sigh, the halfa landed beside him, wondering how he might approach the subject. He obviously hadn't expected a sword on his shoulder but hey, he'd initiated conversations in worse ways.

I’m thinking so many thoughts after that episode, which was wonderful and hilarious, but something I’m very much thinking about is where someone on twitter pointed out the contrast between Rupert going to the club every single day for six weeks to wear Rebecca down vs Ted coming to her office every day for biscuits and genuinely wanting to get to know her. I’m especially thinking about how this adds some more context to Rebecca’s point of view on that as well. We see her disparagingly calling him ‘relentless, and nice’, and her desire for her love of the biscuits to not make her dependent on him providing her with something.

The moment I’m thinking about most is the one at the end of episode 5, where Ted storms in after finding out she sent Jamie away. The biscuit reveal at the end has always felt crucial in this way, but even more so in this context. Her experience has been with the relentless interest and charm until the other person pulled back the layer of charm and showed that this charming nature wasn’t genuine, and in a way I think here, as Ted yells at her, it lets her feel a bit vindicated, or at least secure, in her belief, or lack of belief, in the nature of other people. But then Ted continues the biscuits, and the extension of kindness they represent, no matter how angry he is, and not only that but reveals he has been (without having told her) baking the biscuits himself. His only deceit was hiding an extra kindness he didn't even seek self serving credit for, despite knowing how much she liked the biscuits. Obviously this works so interestingly as another anti-Rupert parallel in a Ted/Rebecca sense, but I love it even just generally in the context of how it’s visible that this is what shakes Rebecca in that scene, because it shakes the view she has of how people treat people after her abusive marriage and isolation, which is allowing her to go on with the plan that will hurt so many of them. It disarms her because even when she has done something bad, and Ted is expressing legitimate annoyance about it, he will not stop extending this relentless kindness and generosity to her, even when he has not got what he wanted, the way she experienced Rupert doing once he had got what he wanted. Ted’s not only relentless, not only nice, he’s also sincere.

Alexandra Boiger's illustrations are what makes this book. It could easily be just another list of famous women if it weren't for Boiger's beautiful illustrations. I'm not sure who chose to match Chelsea Clinton with Alexandra Boiger, Boiger's watercolour style is a great match for the style of writing Clinton chooses to use. One that inspires thoughts of softness, a reminder that these are women.

This book includes 13 women. I will make comments either on Boiger's art or Clinton's words.

Harriet Tubman — Boiger has set made her piece for Tubman at night, while escorting the Underground Railroad. The role that made her famous. Clinton makes sure young readers feel her bravery.

Helen Keller — I love that Helen Keller's entry includes Anne Sullivan, Anne deserves recognition for all she did too. And those are fantastic likenesses of both Keller and Sullivan (and of course Sir Thomas). This entry is an important representation.

Clara Lemlich — It was the illustrations on Clara Lemlich's entry that made me start looking so intently at all the others. Putting Clara in red at all times allows Boiger to create a layered and structured story.

Nellie Bly — I like how Clinton approached Nelly Bly. An adult would see how bold Nelly had to be. There are things that Nelly did that journalists still have to be super bold to do now. Boiger does a great job to create that visual disconnect between captivity and freedom using colour and shape.

Virginia Apgar — I had never heard of Apgar before or the Apgar score. This is just a wonderful introduction to her. The blues of the illustrations are the right choice.

Maria Tallchief — This is by far my fave illustration in the book and I will not go into it. Another woman I had never heard of. I'm Australian and dance is not my thing. But I'm going to look her up.

Claudette Colvin — All I will say about this entry is I am glad Colvin was chosen rather than Parks. Parks, while undoubtedly important to the Civil Rights Movement got part of her inspiration from Colvin

Ruby Bridges — I adore the change in angle for the art. Boiger has chosen to draw her from above. I love Ruby Bridges but damn no child should have gone through what she had to. If you have the opportunity to see her speak take it.

Margaret Chase Smith — Like Clara Lemlich, Margaret Chase Smith seems to be drawn using the adage red is power. I don't know anything about her, but from what Clinton gives us I know who her equivalent is in my country. Powerful women in government are a whole other thing to me.

Saly Ride — Sally Ride is an unexpected (I know it shouldn't be) but good inclusion. there is a lot of blues here and I appreciate that. I like that Clinton doesn't limit herself to Ride's space travels, choosing to include her educational programs.

Florence Griffith Joyner — This has such a smart illustration. It has Florence Griffith Joyner as a child running on one page with a continuation to her adult self wearing her Olympic medals. It is just a brilliant page, both the words and the art.

Oprah Winfrey — I really don't like the illustration for Oprah Winfrey. I like Clinton's words but there is something off about Boiger's art.

Sonia Sotonayor — I'm so happy Sonia Sotonayor is in here. She is a representation of the highest order for young lantix people. These people are often shown in a negative light around the justice system. Another justice that could be included, one who doesn't get enough love is Sandra Day O'Connor, the first female Supreme Court justice.

I want to include the dedications here because I really like them. "Inspired by Senator Elizabeth Warren and in celebration of all the women who persist every day. — C.C. To some Heroines of mine: Coretta Scott King, Sophie Scholl, and my mother, Berta Boiger. — A.B." For those unaware Coretta Scott King was an American civil rights leader, unfortunately only ever seen as wife to Martin Luther King Jr but that is not all she was. Sophie Scholl was a German political activist in a non-violent fashion against the Nazis in WWII. She was executed at 21 and her story is definitely one to note.

Okay, so the new design choices for Shen are bothering me. Like, I know it's Her impersonating him, but I don't like how fluffy they made him. It's messy to look at, and part of his character is metal.

Like, he was supposed to look cold and sleek, like metal. Because it makes him look more lethal, and sharp. (Like a stabby weapon.) But metal is also kind of his element.

I don't know, but to me the changes make him look less regal and imposing, and more... frumpy?
