Shaymin (#492)
Shaymin (#492)
Gracidea gracidea [Shaymin]
General Information: Shaymin is a small grass-type Pokémon with the power to purify pollutants from the air and land and create beautiful gracidea flowers.
Shaymin have two forms, Land Form and Sky Form. It uses the power of the magical gracidea flowers to transform itself into its Sky Form, where it becomes a Grass/Flying type. Should the Sky Form Shaymin be exposed to the night or frozen/frostbitten, it will revert back to its Land Form. In its Land Form, Shaymin are about 8 inches tall (0.2 M) and weigh about 4.6 pounds (2.1 kg)—so basically, the size of a small cat. In its Sky Form, Shaymin are 1’4 feet tall and average at 11.5 pounds (5.2 kg), or basically a medium-sized cat.
Habitat: Shaymin are found globally. Anywhere flowers can bloom, Shaymin can potentially be found. However, they will only be found in the Spring and Summer seasons, then as the seasons turn they will transform into their Sky Forms and migrate to the opposite hemisphere in search of Spring.
Shaymins have the incredible power to purify poisons out of the land and air to a point. However, wild Shaymin generally prefer to spend their time in flower fields and don’t do a whole lot of wandering between habitats except when it’s time to migrate. And they often return to their favorite places, places where people are gracious and kind.
Divinity: Shaymin are demigods. They are chronologically immortal but may still die of natural causes, such as predation, illness, or severe injuries. As with all demigods, they are only capable of reproducing with themselves or Mews.
As stated above, Shaymins have the incredible power to purify toxins out of the land and air by absorbing them into their beautifuls petals and then releasing it the purified air at once. But this power is not as universal as folks would hope. For starters, what we as humans consider a pollutant, may not be seen as such by the powers of Shaymin. For example, carbon dioxide is a pollutant in the context of climate change, but Shaymin do not contribute to the cleaning of CO2 from our atmosphere anymore than any other grass-type Pokémon or plant. This also applies to methane and other greenhouse gases that are supposed to be in our lower atmosphere. Shaymin magic, while powerful, is limited in scope and tends not to treat a disbalance of perfectly normal substances to be poison.
What Can Shaymin Purify? Shaymin can purify an incredible range of substances from weed-killers to pesticides to fungicides and other bio-poisons, to even ozone when it’s in the lower atmosphere, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). The list is long and extensive and research is on-going into these matters. They can also purify lead as an air pollutant, though this is done by simply pulling it out of the air and putting it in the ground, which is definitely better than nothing. Other particulate matter, such as from sand mines and whatnot, can be given the purification treatment too, either by shoving it into the ground like it does with lead, or by converting it into non-harmful substances.
What Can Shaymin NOT Purify? Atmospheric greenhouse gases EXCEPT ozone, radiation poisoning, and metal poisoning. While there are many forms of metals, such as how animals use iron in organic compounds, Shaymin magic is not equipped to handle metal poisoning. Unfortunately, both radiation poisoning and metal poisonings are a type of poison that is beyond the scope of Shaymin’s powers.
How Does Shaymin Magic Work? It works by taking the harmful substance and converting the molecules into a benign compound, typically by simply breaking the molecule apart and releasing it as normal benign gas. This is why Shaymin Magic is limited in scope. CO2 and methane are, by its powers, considered benign gas and is what other substances would be converted into, especially CO2. Ozone is converted into breathable oxygen. Assorted bio poisons are broken down and converted into things that are harmless, like minerals and dirt. But this doesn’t work for things like radiation poisoning, where the issue is at an atomic level that would require the conversion of an element/isotope into a different element or isotope. Similarly, this is also why Shaymin Magic doesn’t work for metal poisoning, because often the metal is already in a pure state that is unpurifiable. This also means that metal poisoning and radiation poisoning are both effective on Shaymins, and they will avoid areas with such ecological damage. Additionally, it is important to understand that Shaymin Magic, while powerful, can only purify the area immediately around the Shaymin, up to about 6 feet in diameter if the Shaymin is at full strength. Shaymin can grow tired and exhausted from too much purification.
Divine Lineage: One of Xerneas’s Children.
Role in the Wheel of Reincarnation: None.
Life Cycles: Shaymins have been observed for thousands of years by scientists, farmers, and horticulturalists. Because of this, we know that individuals have been known to live for hundreds of years. They mate seldomly with no particular range to describe. Shaymin are communal creatures that live in tribes, and thus their babies are raised communally with little threat of predation. There are estimated to be about 10,000 Shaymin on Earth at any given time, and perhaps a handful are born each year, and another handful die each year from assorted events.
Behavior: Shaymin are kind and gracious creatures, but shy and easily spooked. They will only warm up to those who are kind and gracious. They are also social animals that rely on their tribe for socialization and mutual protection.
Diet: Sunlight, berries, poffins, and grass. Just let your Shaymin roll around in a sunbeam and it’ll be fine.
Conservation: Unknown
Relationship with Humans: Shaymin have been beloved by humanity for as long as we can remember. Cultures the world over are familiar with Shaymins, the flowers they bring in the spring, and their sweet but shy dispositions. To some they are the gods of flowers, or the harbingers of Spring, to others the deities of gratitude, and others liken them to the fae. They are mystical creatures born of legends to most, but very real to those who know better. In ages past, kings and queens would build elaborate gardens and hope that the Shaymin would grace them, but alas, Shaymin were often the guests of little villages, folks grateful for their company and the flowers that bloomed in their wake. There are villages where the Shaymin visit frequently, where annual Flower Festivals are held each summer.
In popular culture, the image of Shaymin and the gracidea flower is one that is used as a universal symbol of flowers. The gracidea flower has been utilized in clothing patterns for generations, and the petals were used in ancient times to make a lovely pink dye.
Environmental activist groups have used Shaymin’s image in relation to pollution clean up efforts.
While rare, there are trainers who have successfully befriended/caught a Shaymin for themselves. They tend to belong to peaceful trainers and are even more rarely seen in battling competitions.
Classification: Shaymin were given the scientific name Gracidea gracidea by Linneaus, who had seen one as a child and knew that they truly existed. The name is entirely in reference to the beautiful gracidea flowers that bloom from Shaymin.
