I already have some ideas about Yun Wei Shan's identity (that I'd rather not post about until it's 80-90% confirmed), this is my biggest question so far though: are the images below related to the ones above or not?

Theories: Back Mountain Princes

My Journey To You - Thoughts and Impressions Part 1 of 2
Tumblr media
I realise that I've been missing these past few months, i've been on a consumption binge but with little to no bandwidth to write about any show/film irrespective of how much I may have loved them. (depression is an ass) But I can, once again, feel thoughts tingling in my brain and I've decided to get back to writing, something that I deeply enjoy. Anyway, enough about me, let's get started.
To keep the post from getting obscenely long, I'm going to split it into two. This post will be about the technical aspects of the show. Part 2 will focus on the characters.
My Journey To You is a 2023 fantasy, Wuxia show (shows/films that are based in ancient China with martial arts warriors being capable of superhuman feats, like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). It was highly anticipated owing to the amazing trailer (one of the best I've seen)
youtube
Plot: The series tells the story of Yun Wei Shan, a spy longing for freedom, who infiltrates the Gong residence to complete a mission. In the eerie and treacherous Gong residence, she encounters love and friendship, embarks on a journey of self-discovery, and finds the determination to move forward. Together with the rebellious nobleman Gong Zi Yu, they grow and mature through their shared experiences. (via mydramalist)
It stars: Yu Shu Xin (Yun Wei Shan), Zhang Ling He(Gong Zi Yu), Ryan Cheng (Gong Shang Jue) and Lu Yu Xiao (Shangguan Qian), Tian Jia Rui (Gong Yuan Zhi), Jolin Jin (Gong Zi Shang) and Sun Chen Jun (Jin Fan)
Written by: Edward Guo.
Series directed by: Edward Guo & Luo Luo
Tumblr media
I'll talk about everything I liked before I get into the stuff that I didn't.
Right off the bat, this show has some of the most gorgeous characters you'll come across and this applies to both the men and the women. The costume and make-up departments do an amazing job making already attractive people look ridiculously attractive. They also help the actors really inhabit the world seamlessly. The costumes are especially incredibly detailed and intricate, you can see the care that went into crafting the look for each of these characters. Shout-out to Huang Wei (costume designer) and Shi Hui (Make-up)
One of the best aspects of the show is the cinematography by Wei Hong. This show is aesthetically beautiful, so many absolutely stunning shots. Chinese shows (and Korean shows) love slow-motion shots, and while at times, it can be a bit much, this show makes great use of them, especially during the fight scenes.
Tumblr media
The cinematography is helped to a great extent by the excellent production design, courtesy Jiyao Zhang. Like the costumes, the production design too is detailed and intricate. The world feels fully realised and yet also lived in. Each of the different clan mansions, the Front Hill and Back Hill are so incredibly different and distinct that you can immediately tell where you are. An insane amount of hard work went into the show and it shows in every frame.
You can tell that they had a good budget to work with and every bit of it was spent on making the show look as stylized as possible, there is not an ounce of realism to be found here, cue slow-motion beautiful hair flying shots. (Every day I bemoan my inability to make gifs) But the screencaps below illustrate the beauty of the show, it's so gorgeous that you could literally use screencaps as wallpapers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fight scenes in the show are some of the best I've seen. They are intense and thrilling and always coherent, you can always tell who's fighting who. The fight scenes are also so aesthetically pleasing, like an exceptionally deadly dance.
Tumblr media
Now, we come to the not-so-great stuff.
First off, the marketing. The show was marketed and advertised as an action fantasy show and while there is action and it is excellent, it's not an "action" show. The main focus of the show is on the characters and the internal power struggle of the Gong family. There are also whole scenes, sometimes making up the bulk of an entire episode which are just conversations. I've seen a lot of viewers disappointed and it makes sense. they thought they were coming for action and instead they got verbose conversations.
The pacing also comes to a near-halt in some of these scenes and instead we're treated to lengthy expositions which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it becomes tedious when it happens repetitively.
Now, let's come to the worst thing about the show, it's ending, specifically the last 5 minutes. This end is ridiculously mindbogglingly bad when you consider that there is almost no confirmation on a 2nd season. It's just such a bad idea to end on a cliffhanger like this. If they wanted to leave things open for a potential 2nd season, they could have ended with the Wufeng elders coming together at that character's home, possibly to hold them ransom or something, like literally anything else.
if you're planning on watching this show and I do recommend it, keep in mind that it does get slow and don't watch the last 5 mins of the show. Trust me, you'll like the show a whole lot more if you follow that approach.

Word of honor rewatch be like:
Watching ep1 for the first time: Oh, so the Zishu guy is a bad guy, an assassin, ok ok! I am half sure he's in love with his shidi? who died and gave his hairpin to the princess?? Poor Zishu guy? What is going on really? I am confusion~ Oooh a sexy tall guy with a fan, oh no I'm shipping him with the Zishu guy, I hope Zishu was not in love with that shidi ofhis-!
Rewatching ep1: I hear first tones of the main theme and I tear up uncontrollably. Zhehan's eyes, oh my god the man is perfect. Why did I just casually wanted to rewatch thiS IS PAINFUL. A different soundtrack plays in the background and I know it's name and where it is usually used. Oh, Ah Xu! Where is lao wen when you need him?! Everything hurts and nothing is ok.

Character Guide for Swallows on the Beam
SPOILERS BELOW! Read at your own risk if you are not up to date. This post will be updated with every new chapter.
If you are looking for the Swallows on the Beam Facts and Info page, click here.
The Investigators Lan Fan Huo, also known as Enkhtuya. Formerly a member of the Huo, one of the Yao’s sworn subordinate clans, Lan Fan’s true identity has been banished by the Dowager Empress. She is currently posing as a nomadic woman, Feiyan Ma, from the steppes, and acting as an imperial spy.
His Imperial Majesty, Ling Yao, the Dawn Emperor.
Extremely Stressed about declaring it open season on himself (romantically? Violently? Both? Who knows) by opening the Lotus Hall. Also extremely stressed about his job overall. He is half-brother to Mei Chang as well as Lien Hua, Xinzhe, and Dong Mao Feng, but defeated them in the race for the throne by bringing a Philosopher’s Stone to Xing.
Her Highness, Imperial Cousin, the Seventeenth Princess Mei Chang. Alphonse’s alkahestry teacher, First Governor of Chang-guo, and the half-sibling of Ling Yao and Dong Mao, Xinzhe, and Lien Hua Feng. Usually accompanied by her bearcat, Xiao Mei. Has feelings for Alphonse Elric.
Alphonse Elric. A Western traveler and old friend of the Dawn Emperor. Despite Ling’s best attempts to keep him out of the ongoing situation, he’s as deep in it as anyone. Has feelings for Mei Chang, but is not voicing them. It’s possible he is unaware of them.
Suyin Ma. Also named Sarangerel. The wife of Shan Yao, and Feiyan Ma’s cousin. Suyin claims Fuu told her about Lan Fan’s past prior to her joining the Huo family, but has not elaborated on how, when, or why.
Shan Yao. Suyin’s husband, Commander of the Imperial Guard, Lan Fan’s supervisor for her current mission, and Ling Yao’s older cousin. He has known both Ling and Lan Fan for over a decade and has many embarrassing stories in his arsenal because of it. Lan Fan is currently staying in Shan and Suyins rooms at Pubuchuan.
Niu Lu. An alkahestrist trained by Mei and a former torturer for the Imperial Army, Niu Lu is currently serving as Lan Fan’s maid during her investigation of the Fengs.
The Suspects The Triplets, Dong Mao, Xinzhe, and Lien Hua Feng. The triplet children of the Feng family, and Imperial Cousins in their own right, and as such half-siblings of Ling Yao and Mei Chang. They have come to the capital to tear the Dowager Empress from her position of power by whatever means necessary. Dong Mao is the Sixth Prince; Xinzhe is the Seventh Prince; and Lien Hua is the Ninth Princess.
The Dowager Empress, Huian Yao. Ling Yao’s mother. Ambitious, venomous, and ruthless. Appears to have played a role in the massacre of the Nohin people alongside the Retired Emperor, Ling’s father. Currently working with Minister of the Left Shen Liu to get one of her chosen subordinates into the role of Ascending Empress. Fond of poisons.
Residents of the Imperial City Shen Liu. Minister of the Left and primary ally of the Dowager Empress, though they historically have not gotten along very well. Has been pressuring Ling to get married for at least the last eighteen months. He absolutely loathes Feiyan Ma.
Bao Zhang. Minister of the Right and founding member of the Reconciliation committee. He is reclusive and odd, rarely coming out into court even though he is one of the most powerful ministers in the Imperial City. He has a pet crow that delivers messages for him, and an assistant, Yue, who is a mathematical genius.
Xiao Niao Song, First Governor of Song-guo. Head of the Song family, mother to Xiao Huan, Xiao Liu, and Xiao Xie Song. Another founding member of the Reconciliation committee. She respects Feiyan Ma and is seeking her advice on dealing with the nomadic peoples on Song-guo borders.
Xiao Huan Song, Second Daughter of the Song family. The Song Family’s entrant into the competition for the role of Ascending Empress. She is an alkahestrist.
Jian Zhang. Imperial Master of the Horse and Bao Zhang’s cousin. Reclusive and resents politics. A former soldier, he served in the border wars with Thamasq. He is helping Feiyan Ma with Changchang.
The Cao Brothers, Aiguo and Heng. Aiguo Cao is Lien Hua’s fiance. He has appalling manners and a worse personality. Heng, his younger brother, is equally as unpleasant.
Biyi Chang. The Thirteenth Lady of Chang-guo, a distant cousin of Mei’s. She is shy, awkward, and quiet. She was also Suyin’s first friend at court.
Caterina della Barbarigo. An Aerugan noblewoman and the fiancee of Dong Mao Feng, she struggles with Xingese cultures, languages, and customs. Lan Fan has offered to teach her more Xingese.
Gen Chang. Lan Fan’s bodyguard, a former imperial guardsman, and a distant cousin of Mei’s. He may or may not have a slight crush on Lan Fan. He was assigned to guard Feiyan Ma after the Firebrand assassination attempt that nearly killed her.
The Potentials. Six women, outside of Feiyan Ma and Xiao Huan Song, have been selected and granted lotuses to show their status as potential Ascending Empresses. These women are:
Hede Lu. A Lu lady that Lan Fan unintentionally humiliated at a shooting party. A known ally of the Empress.
Lihua Zhang. The niece of Bao Zhang. Lien Hua has described her as an idiot.
Shasha and Yiyi Liu. Daughters of Minister Liu. They are intent on winning the competition by any means necessary.
Jia Zhao. Daughter of the Zhao family, the Empress’s natal family, and widely recognized as a genius. Her allegiances are unknown.
Ziyan Xie. Daughter of the Xie family, and a warrior.
Citizens of Xinjing Xiaoqing. A former firebrand, Xiaoqing is half-Qarashi and half-Xingese. Al is teaching her the basics of alkahestry in return for her assistance in infiltrating the Fires of God in the capital. She is an older-sister figure to Peizhi.
Peizhi. Currently an assistant groom in the imperial stables. Formerly a jockey in the Xuanwu ward. He owes Feiyan Ma his life, and is determined to repay the debt any way he can, up to and including getting into massive trouble with Xiaoqing. He and Changchang have a very special bond that seems to be related to his latent alkahestrical abilities.
Changchang. A trained warhorse who has gone half-feral due to abusive treatment. Lan Fan rescued her along with Peizhi, and is trying to convince her that humans are not universally shitheads. It’s not going particularly well.
The Fires of God Father Shiloh Trener. The shadowy leader of the Fires of God. An Amestrian who learned (or convinced himself) that he is the son of the sun god, Leto after a forty day fever which culminated on the day the Elric brothers exposed Father Cornello as a fraud. In the wake of the outbreak of Liore’s civil war, he led his religious community to the desert, and then to Feng-guo, where they are currently settled.
Huli. “Fox.” A Firebrand and an assassin. Possibly Cretan or Amestrian. Has tried to kill the Fengs at least once (that we know of) and seems intent on fighting Lan Fan. Original name unknown.
Lang. “Wolf.” A Firebrand. A Xingese man working as a spy for the Feng in the Imperial City while simultaneously reporting all their doings to the Fires of God. He is mute, and speaks primarily through sign language. Original name unknown.
Sheng. “Weasel.” A Firebrand, an Aeurgan, and a former slave. Seems to be the leader of the quartet of Firebrands who are after the Fengs, or, at least, the only one that Huli will listen to. Original name unknown.
Mao. “Cat.” A young Firebrand, approximately sixteen. She has pursued alkahestrical treatments which have turned her into something similar to a chimera, but unable to shift back and forth between her human and animal forms, which means she has long, permanently extended claws, fangs, and hair that is more like long fur. Original name unknown.
Shu (formerly Shubiao, but I fucked up, that means computer mouse, please feel free to laugh your ass off at me). “Mouse.” A Nohin man and Firebrand that Lan Fan captured snooping through her quarters. His original name is Kazuki Sakari. He is currently in hiding after escaping imperial custody, and cannot reunite with his firebrand cohort for fear they will simply execute him for his failures.

watch and rewatch list tag
i was tagged by the lovely tay @tutontawans to do this tag!! ty my love <3 i'm watching so many shows bc adhd, so this'll be long lmao
watching:
• extraordinary attorney woo: i am absolutely obsessed with this one, my little neurodivergent heart is so blessed. like all media, esp with autistic folk, it has its flaws, but it is so far the best and loveliest depiction of an autistic character i've ever seen. highly recommend!!
• triage: bestieeeeeeees, i am a huge sucker for a good time loop, and one in a medical drama??? *chef's kiss*
• link: eat love kill: this show is absolutely everything—romance, comedy, thriller, fantasy, drama, mystery—and has absolutely everything—weird psychic link, cooking, twin sister murder revenge plot, pathetic little meow meow, unlucky girlboss. what's not to love??
• kinnporsche: thoroughly enjoying it, v worth the two year wait, and i can't believe it's almost over
• minato shouji coin laundry: having a hard time getting past how young shin is, but besides that i'm really enjoying this! it's cute and so far better than the manga, which is pretty decent
• tomorrow: i've been v slowly but surely making my way through this kdrama and its v good and sentimental and fun and cute and emotional
• star & sky: sky in your heart: it's basic but cute and i'm enjoying having a classic thai bl for my frigays
• senpai, danjite koidewa: WHERE IS EP 3???? i binged the manga and loved it and now am in utter agony waiting for new eps
• my secret love: i'm kinda behind on this one, yet it's one of my favorite currently airing (for now, i've only seen 2.5 eps, so don't come for me if it soured). v cute and classic
• sh**ting stars: also behind on this one, i was waiting so impatiently for new eps that i forgot about it absjdbka. 2 eps left to go, though, and i love every second of it so far.
• a robot in the orange orchard: having such a good time with this one, it's so cute and sweet and funny and the female lead is so <3
• check out: idk why i'm watching this, it's so shit and v annoying and makes no sense. but i'm in too deep and i love the actors, so i'm still here
• minamdang cafe: only one ep in but i love this little found family of scammers and the detective girlboss
• stranger things s4 vol. 2: no one said this was an asian drama watchlist, lmao. i'm v slowly making my way through this bc 1. it's very long and 2. it's kinda eh, esp with the spoilers i've seen
• who rules the world: i went absolutely insane over this one when it first started airing, but then my parents and i started rewatching shl and watching this in between just made me ache for more shl, so now it's kinda on hold, but i'm keeping it in my currently watching list to hold myself accountable!
rewatching:
• shan he ling: the hyperfixation has lasted over a year, babeyyyy!! currently rewatching with my parents (my dad has seen up to ep 26 and my mom's never seen it) and i love it sm and want nothing more than to be watching it 24/7 but my parents have lives and i guess i do too (curse you uni summer classes and job!!), so we're watching very slowly.
• bad buddy: i already finished a full rewatch with my irl friend a little while ago, but another irl friend is on ep 10 so i'm rewatching along with her so that i can talk abt it without spoiling (and also to refresh my mind and go properly insane in out text convos)
as you can tell i'm watching wayyyy too many shows, so i'm getting through them pretty slowly, not to mention the fact that i'm currently spending most of my time listeing to the white vault, a horror podcast i'm incredibly hyperfixated on, absjsj. but such is the life of a gay person with adhd! thanks again to tay for tagging me, this was fun! i tag @ahxu-laowen @laowen @tipnaree @liyazaki @musicdramalove and anyone else who wants to!

Moonie, she/her
I’m always looking for more stuff to read so pls feel free to send me book or fic recs whenever
For the most part I tag fandoms on here by either their names or popular abbreviations. I don’t tag books and their tv show adaptations separately so posts for both are generally encompassed under whatever the tag for the book is (for example: you will find stuff for both Shan He Ling and Tian Ya Ke under my TYK tag)
I also don’t tag for spoilers
Sometimes I write: ao3

You know, I think at least for me part of why Word of Honor resonates so much (aside from just being really good storytelling and acting) is that the story starts with two main characters who are both in their thirties and are just completely done with the world, and especially after this year I’m just like yeah, same.
But the story doesn’t end there, it doesn’t end with Zhou Zishu’s nails or Wen Kexing going out in a blaze of vengeance. The story says no, there are still things worth living for, not everything is lost. Not everything can be saved, but it’s still worth it to keep going.
