Q: Before our modern times and diagnosis of Mental Health I guess people suffering with mental health would be put into the care of the shamans? what did they really understand about mental health and what could they do about it.

A: well let me start with saying the mental health issues was a lot less common in the age of shaman. A great deal of mental health issues often stems from modern imbalancement. The effort to name and diagnosed these mental ailments is less an exercise in curiosity for knowledge sake and more an effort to catalog the kinds of failings of people mental health under the pressure and isolation of our modern world.

There were still people dealing with trauma and mental health issues and yes they would be sent to the shaman for help. Most shaman didnt have the mental health language we have now but the goal of the shaman wasn't to diagnos just the chemical imbalancement but to understand the outward symptoms mental illness had on a person. The language sounded more, "this person is cursed or this person is possessed by a certain kind of spirit" which might sound wrong in a society that divides a person into their physical, mental and spiritual selfives and believes one has little affect on the other however for inexperienced shamon any soltion that only tries to fix the mind or only the spirit is incomplete. So even though shamans didn't have the technical language for understanding modern mental illness the modern world it just starting to catch up to the wisdom of holistic medicine and subscribing care of the whole person. I once saw a person subscribe herb for depression and was told to move these kind of heavy statuettes from one side of the village to the other each day. When I ask why was he gove such silly task, I was told it will help with the depression. In moving the statuettes the person can start to create new habits, exercise, be in the sun and when see him moveing the statuettes they will know to talk to him kindly which are all good things for depression. For mental illness that can't be cured it's the shamans job to find a place for the afflicted people, away to reinitiate them back into society and if they can not sometimes the shaman will adopt that person into their camp. Which takes an amazing amount of patience and responsibility and sometimes from the outside in it looks as if the shaman has a Legion of zombies or has put people under their evil spell to do their bidding, thats so sad.

Just to give some other ideas about solutions the shaman would create:

with the wisdom of what kinds of foods could bring chemical balance they might subscribe that a person prepare themselves and eat certain foods or a low dose of psychedelics.

a solution might involve the family treating the afflicted differently to lower the stress or to perform rituals that puts the afflicted at the center of attention.

creating a new kind of repected role in the village that is specific to their psychosis, such as person with OCD is honored for restacking stones in a timple or thanked for making correction in line with their tendency to have things look a certain way.

Things related to trauma are also handled with care, rituals rooted in experiential wisdom that certain things that people do need to have process that giving people space to process and heal from less they hurt others. Like warriors coming back from war are not just welcomed in as war heroes who are expected live normally after killing other people. Those warriors are built a space to together to cry, process and heal before they allowed to come home, It would be a shaman's job to oversee that process.

My Skullgirls headcanon is that Shamone is different than Samson in that he's *actually* one with Fukua. Instead of being a complete separate entity, Shamone says a lot of what's already on Fukua's mind.

It just happens to be most of the thoughts that she doesn't normally say out loud. Consider Navi or Fi from Zelda, but they slip in weird, violent advice every now and again.
