#sex scene discourse

Twitter is dying, so I’m posting this here: One of the oddest things about the sex scene discourse is that it seems to have sprung up fully formed from almost nothing. Right now mainstream films very rarely feature heterosexual sex scenes - even implied ones - to the extent that when my podcast partner and I recorded an episode about sex scenes in films we struggled to come up with contemporary examples. The examples we did come up with were almost exclusively queer (Portrait of a Lady on Fire) or TV (A League of Their Own, Game of Thrones).
So the moral panic around sex scenes, especially in fandom spaces, seems to be more about people not likely the existence of fan fiction or fandom discourse about people fucking. A lot of this also seems to be about expressing thirst about actors or pairings. And given that this side of fandom is almost exclusively driven by women and queer people, this seems to be a desire to silence those people.
Which, needless to say, is pretty goddamn troubling.

I was thinking about the sex scene discourse and I hate using this example and I hate every word that I am about to say but Lords of Chaos 🤢 incorporated their sex scenes 🤢 into the movie really well because they serve as characterization 🤮🤮🤮🤮
(I am discussing Lords of Chaos as a media piece and the characters thereof. This is not an analysis of irl people and events)
Faust seducing the older man and then killing him shows the lengths these men go for the ethos of black metal. Faust is insecure, confused in this new trve kvlt world, a young man unsure of who he is. He uses this moment to cement himself as an infamous star and killer.
Euronymous' sex scene (and really his love interest arc in general) shows how much he doesn't take this seriously in the end. He makes Mayhem for the approval of others and once he has a real friend and partner in the photographer, he feels he can break free from the black circle scene. Contrast this with Varg's sex scenes (I deserve Gitmo for this sentence)
Varg is the Trve Black Metal god. He plows (ah) through women constantly. No aftercare, doesn't even notice if they cum. He is evil. He is a Nazi. He is in it for the power and becomes Burzum.

I feel like the discourse revolving around sex scenes should be less “they’re never necessary” and more of a conversation about what we mean as writers when we say “show don’t tell” because while sex scenes are definitely showing we also need to think about what they should tell too.
Like I understand wanting to showcase that a character is fantasizing about someone to set up the fact that a relationship may not have any romantic intentions- but there’s “tantalizing and sensual” and then there’s straight up exploitative.
And I think that’s my problem with works like The Idol, or Blonde, which take a scene where the point can clearly be made just using one or two shots and prolong them until they become less and less about character.
We start to forget the intentions of the scene when they’re allowed to go on for too long, and I wonder- why, as a filmmaker, would you want an audience member to forget your intentions, unless they were something completely different in the first place?

"Sex scenes in movies and TV??? But I can't watch that with my parents!!!"
1. You are a grown adult, why is that even a concern?
2. I watched the entirety of Game of Thrones with my dad as a teenager. Yes, it can be a little awkward but so can most of life as you transition from "child and adult" to "two adults." You get over it pretty quickly 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bitch you brought up "sex scene discourse" lol acting like it just materialize out of nowhere out of thin fucking air. When the reality is no there is real world context.
I was giving that context.
But the real life women that real life assaults happened to doesn't seem to fit into your fun silly goofy, fandom time. This is the problem with bitches like you in fandoms.
She blocked me. But I'm not done yet. Lol

i believe SOME people who dislike sex scenes in media are just tired of like. poorly set up heterosexual couples that have to fuck for the viewer to know they are in love. and the sex they have? its not even good

Im sorry if children raised in a cruel and puritanical society that denies them rights and facilitates their abuse dont have perfectly nuanced opinions on sex and media yet.

Still laughing at ppl trying to age shame you in the Titans fandom because you told them stop trash talking Anna/Kory's looks as fans of her.
It was genuinely funny.
1.The show was rated M and on HBO...not the Disney Chanel
2. I was also the same age as the 2 leads so like...they wanted to see elderly people fucking? Is that it? Weird flex.
3. Yes the vocal minority were college students chronically online and using fictional black women as self-inserts for their swirl fetishes but they never really mattered outside of their echo chamber. No one cared what they thought about anything.
You will still never catch me mocking a BW's looks after she was a victim of online harassment. And for my tumblr haters you'll also never catch me deciding a BW character has no worth if she's not fucking a WM.
I hope these ppl finally got dicked down by a white man though.
Love, Grandma

I feel like people are reading a lot into that baudelaire welch message that really isn't present? It sounds to me like they were assigned to finish up astarions writing during crunch (still bad) rather than making the decision to do that voluntarily. That + the fact that most of his extra scenes were already present in early access (he's very front loaded in terms of content) and iirc the extra durge content for astarion is like... from what I remember basically just the breakup conversation, some mid-conversation lines (ie. "but you're MY leaking blood bag"), and the first night durge scene which is again, like, three lines of dialogue tacked onto a scene that would occur with or without him. While astarion IS clearly larians darling and that's not good (if I had to guess I think it's because the devs really like neil newbon's performance, as he's not actually the most popular among fans) I think baudelaire welch is getting a lot of undeserved vitriol over what amounts to probably like 20 lines of dialogue max. Something also to note is that companions amount of content is distributed differently; wyll has far more actual dialogue trees to go through in my experience, and karlach and shadowheart have a lot of environmental interaction in act 3 and act 2 respectively. Also worth noting that my game was incredibly glitched in act 3 though, so I may have missed a lot. All this to say that larian definitely had a favouritism problem but, especially given that they only joined on in 2022, which is after a lot of astarions scenes were already written, I don't think baudelaire welch is the boogeyman people are acting like they are. I'd need a full interview from them to really know what was going on leading up to release rather than. One discord message. Actually why are they even in a discord with fans that's such a bad idea

Uhm, I better not catch anyone at pride wearing a wedding ring or being pregnant. You’re forcing other people to be part of your scene and your sex lives you gross freaks!
This is how you fuckers sound when you talk about the mere existence and/or presence of a leather harness, or flogger, or other form of kink gear being inappropriate by nature. In its very existence. A wedding ring (consummation laws) and a pregnancy are much more symbols of fucking or having fucked than kink gear — goth, punk, and alternative culture often accessorize with kink gear that they may not ever use in the bedroom, for example. If someone simply wearing something or appearing in a way that makes you think that they’re sexual beings should exclude you from pride, let’s apply it evenly, hm?

honestly it's kind of weird how some of yall will treat anything vaugly kink related like it's the same as full on public sex. like yall will see someone in a collar or, god forbid, a leash and act like someone just got fully naked in and showed you their junk instead of like,,,, wearing an accessory??? even like, puppy play or bdsm gear or whatever, it's just a costume they're wearing. like people will see kink gear at pride and be like wow that's so inappropriate they essentially whipped their junk out and started having hardcore sex in front of me :// like no, you saw someone wearing an outfit. it's like the equivalent of someone wearing lingerie out in public but lingerie that didn't actually show anything. like yeah, maybe it makes you a little uncomfortable bc it's not what you're used to seeing or whatever, and like that's fine you can feel whatever you do, but your discomfort doesn't mean you can dictate to other people what they can and can't do. seeing straight ppl make out on the bus makes me uncomfortable, but i don't think het pda should be illegal or whatever

actually, I want more unnecessary sex scenes in media. make them weird, barely connected to the plot, gross and uncomfortable.
