@thestarmaker submitted: Today's nice bug is: this lovely ladybug I rescued from a creek. She started drying herself off the moment I picked her out of the water, and she stayed on my hand until she was almost ready to fly again!
She is literally perfect. Look at her cleaning her little face. Precious :')

Coccinella septempunctata more commonly known as the seven-spot ladybird, seven-spotted ladybug, or C-7 beetle, is a species of ladybug which was originally endemic to mainland Europe and the middle east but thanks to humans and the spread of agriculture it can now be found all throughout North America, mainland Africa, mainland Asia, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, Madagascar, Cypress, Malta, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand. Here they dwell in a range of habitats including grasslands, meadows, steppe, gardens, forests, parks, marshes, and agricultural fields. Although both seven spot ladybug larvae and adults mainly eat aphids, pollen, and nectar, when aphids are not available these ladybugs are known feed upon other insects such as thrips, white flies, jumping plant lice, leafhoppers, and on the eggs of some beetles and butterflies. Reaching around .3 -.5 inches (7.6- 12.7mm) in length, adult seven-spot ladybirds have round bodies with black heads and abdomens and red thoraxs while the larvae are brownish-grey in colour, with four pairs of bright orange splotches across their bodies. Their distinctive spots and conspicuous colours warn of their toxicity, making them unappealing to predators. The species can secrete a fluid from joints in their legs which gives them a foul taste. A threatened ladybird may both play dead and secrete the unappetizing substance to protect itself. The seven-spot ladybird synthesizes the toxic alkaloids, N-oxide coccinelline and its free base precoccinelline; depending on sex and diet, the spot size and coloration can provide some indication of how toxic the individual insect is to potential predators. Breeding occurs from spring to fall, with seven spots often mating with several partners per day. Females may lay a cluster of 10-30 eggs on aphid-rich vegetation immediately, or, in fall, may store sperm and lay eggs in spring so their larvae have a more robust food supply. Eggs hatch after around 10 days as larvae eat and grow for another 21-30 days before entering the pupal stage, which lasts seven to 15 days. Adults overwinter in a state of diapause (dormancy) in leaf litter, dense vegetation, under tree bark, and in other sheltered spots. Ladybugs are unusual among insects with complete metamorphosis (egg-larva-pupa-adult) because both the larvae and the adults occupy the same spaces and eat the same thing. Under ideal conditions a seven spot ladybug may live upwards of a year.

I have almost reached my goal!  I am only $150 (€150) away from being able to afford to fix or replace my camera.  As you can see, the light leak continues to get worse, and the black at the bottom is where the shutter doesn’t open all the way.  I miss just being able to take the best bug pic I can, without worrying if it will be unusable.  If anyone can spare any change so I can continue to grace your dash with insects it would be greatly appreciated.  And many, many thanks to those of you that have already contributed.  I really hate to ask, but there is absolutely no way I can afford this repair right now.
There should be a tip button on this post (go to the original if this has been reblogged,) or if that doesn’t work for you, please try here.
Thank you all!  - Celeste

@kosaciec submitted: Here's a couple cute beasts I managed to photograph! Would be nice to get ID for the butterfly , located in [removed] (please remove)
An excellent collection of little dudes! I'm afraid I'd really need clearer photos of the butterfly's markings to tell you what it is confidently. Mayyyyybe a copper in the genus Lycaena, and possibly a scarce copper.

Itto x reader stuff because admin is on an itto trip atm
tags i guess???: idk how to categorize this, fem!reader, damsel in distress
-----
It had been a long day, traveling from Ritou for some fresh dandelion seeds, the only way to make your favorite Mondstat dandelion wine, you had always loved foreign foods and delicacies, so traveling to Ritou from Narukami island was a normal occurrence.
You had just gotten back onto the shore of Narukami island, being escorted by a few guards, who had sent you on your way as soon as you reached the Kitsune statue on the road of Narukami island, which was perhaps a very bad idea.
Looking through your bag of groceries, you suddenly heard footsteps surrounding you. Your head turns up to see several Ronin, and treasure hoarders.
"Hey pretty lady~ mind handing over the goods? just do it calmly and we won't hurt you, got it?" one of the tall ronin spoke, clearly the leader of this group of treasure hoarders, as he looked the strongest, and had samurai armor on.
You looked at the men surrounding you, there were a lot of them, five? no, seven of them surrounded you. A nervous expression was on your face, "P-please... I-I just want to go back home..." you spoke, anxiety lacing your voice as you held your grocery bag close to the emerald obi that held your crimson kimono in place.
The treasure hoarder had an annoyed expression, "Damn it girl, just hand over all your money! If I have to say it again then you'll never get home!" he began to yell almost, you flinched, clearly scared at the mugging attempt.
Looking for an opening, you spotted a large gap between one of the larger looking treasure hoarders, and a skinnier one, who was wearing what looked like to be rags. Getting some courage, you tried to run, not caring if your kimono stayed in place or not, you just needed to get out of there, and run to the nearest town.
Sadly, however, before you could escape the circle of bandits, one of them grabbed the bow of your obi, dragging you back into the circle and pushing you to the dirt, patches of soot covered the asonoha patterns of your kimono, as your knees bruised due to the impact with the floor.
A whimper was heard from your lips, as the treasure hoarders began laughing, "You really think you can get away that easily?" the largest ronin grabbed the hemmed edge of your kimono, fixing to drag you towards him, when a loud, thundering voice was heard.
"Hey! how about you pick on someone your own size?" it shouted, as something jumped down from a ledge, and footprints were heard. Is someone coming to the rescue?
The treasure hoarders looked angry, and got into fighting positions, "Oh? and just who do you think you are?!" the biggest ronin shouted, pulling out his katana.
"Hah! Just who else could it be but the one and oni Arataki Itto!? Pah! Those shogunate samurai can hardly protect anyone! Thus, the greatest and best leader of the Arataki gang must take it into his hands to be a man of the people! I can't just go winning Beetle fights left and right, now can I? A real man has got to save some damsels in distress! Like in those fairy tales! So be prepared to eat dirt!" he spoke.
Then, the oni suddenly sprinted forward, taking his giant claymore in hand, and with a large motion, slammed it on the ground, sending the treasure hoarders flying, and many of them gave up, and sent smoke bombs for their escape.
The leader of the gang however didn't give up, he cut at the oni, who quickly dodged, and slashed at the ronin in return, "Tsk, we'll get her next time," he scoffed, and ran away.
After the whole fiasco, the man, who called himself Itto, of course you knew who he was, almost everyone did, basked in his own glory for a bit, before reaching out a hand in your direction.
"Ha! how about that? your knight in shining armor is finally here, pretty lady!" he boasted, booming laughter echoed off of the cliffs of the Narukami mountain and back into your ears.
You smacked his hand away, "Hmph! I could've handled it!" you spoke, standing up on your own and dusting off your kimono, which had now had a sleeve running off your shoulder, and your obi's bow had almost come undone due to the ronin from before pulling on it.
"Huh? But weren't you literally getting beat up!?" he asked, a dumb expression on his face. Meanwhile your own face was bright red, embarrassed that this infamous oni had to come and save you like you were some sort of damsel in distress in a fairy tale.
"I...I just needed to give them my stuff.. and they would've left..." you spoke rather pessimistically, looking down at the geta you wore.
"Well now that I, the one and only Arataki Itto am finally here, I can escort you to safety!! Haha!! Aren't I so cool?" he boasted with a huge laugh.
You looked rather puzzled, the infamous oni was quite odd, that's for sure. "I..I suppose... um... would you please help me get back to the city? I don't want to be attacked any more treasure hoarders.
"Of course! What kind of man wouldn't help a pretty lady get back to town?!" he spoke, he had called you "pretty lady" again, the nickname made you blush, but it wasn't so bad, "I-I have a name, you know," you said, crossing your arms.
"It's Y/N," you spoke, then fixed your sleeve to go over your shoulder. "Oh yeah?? Y/N... Y/N... hmm... alright! it's memorized! Pretty lady Y/N, got it!" he smiled cheekily at you, giving you a thumbs up.

So we’re doing something a little different for todays IUCN Wednesday as what we’re looking at isn’t classified. But i love them and was talking about them in a reblog earlier.
Tumblr media
(Image description: a photo of a nine-spotted ladybug on a rock. It’s a side view showing the four spots on the side and center spot on top)
Meet the Nine-spotted ladybug, C-9, Coccinella novemnotata. The New York State insect that is hardly found in the state anymore. They are apart of the family Coccinellidae and we’re thought to be the most common and most important lady beetles in New York State in 1989 when it was declared the state insect.
They are identifiable by their nine spots (four on each wing and one in the center spilt between the wings near the head), and the white ‘u’ like bar on their head above a white rectangle.
Tumblr media
(Image description: life stages of C-9, larva, pupae, and adult)
They are highly effective predators for many pests such as scales and aphids. They grow quickly, it takes between 15 to 20 for them to go from egg to adult. And an adult will typically live up to a year.
Tumblr media
(Image description: a map of North America with the historic range of C-9 shaded, it covers most of the us and Canada. And shows recent sightings/current populations which are dotted sporadically)
Unfortunately these guys are sensitive to fluctuations in their habitat, which makes them useful indicators of ecosystem health. Or it did as they have been exceedingly rare in their historic range. They’re actually basically extinct within New York (last i heard there was a small population on Long Island), recent studies haven’t yielded and individuals in the northeast and only a few in the Midwest and west.
The reason for this sudden rapid decline is unknown, the main suspects is an increase in forested areas in the northeast as farming moved west. C-9 thrived in crop fields and as many were abandoned their habitat was lost.
The other suspect is the introduction on non-native coccinellids, namely the seven-spotted lady beetle and the multicolored Asian lady beetle. As they occupy the same niche, and these non-natives are more aggressive they pushed ur native species out. I know going through pinned collections of coccinellids for my capstone research showed that within a year of these species introduction the amount of native individuals collected dropped to almost zero. My own collections didn’t find any (though my roommate sent me a picture after my project was done asking if it was invasive and it was a two spotted ladybug native and thriving).
179 coccinellid species have been introduced to North America, 27 of these became established. The best way to help not just C-9 but other native coccinellids is to learn how to id lady beetles, especially your native ones. Get involved in citizen science projects to monitor populations.
(It’s not letting me add my coccinellid id sheet but I’ll try and add it later)

30th July 2022: Durlston: Post 2 of 2: The birds, flowers and landscape Gannets flying over the sea an amazing species to see as always, a number of Shags, a patrolling Peregrine over the cliffs always a symbolic coastal bird to see here, Kestrel hovering, Whitethroat, Stonechat at the place I saw my first ever in 2007 seeing them well with things in their mouths today, Skylark gliding over a meadow they have nested in and I believe Raven were avian highlights of the walk at this brilliant location for birds.
The insect rich meadows the wealth of insects we saw here this afternoon mentioned in my previous post part one of today’s posts was supported so well by a rich array of colourful wildflowers. Restharrow led the highlights with loads of these distinctive pink and white gems seen which was notable today I remember them here last year on this visit. Red bartsia which I first ever noticed here when we came on the July visit a year ago tomorrow before I saw it a lot in home areas and have again this year was a highlight today too. I also enjoyed in the meadows and other areas today clumps of chamomile which the fifth picture in this photoset I took today shows, lots of varied wild carrot which was interesting to see I took the eighth picture in this photoset of some, lots of bright purple knapweed, scabious including some white which I took the third picture in this photoset of, thistle including woolly thistle, teasel, fleabane, ragwort, montbretia one also seen last year here which I enjoyed at Lakeside for the first time this week, bindweed, dock, my first wild parsnip noticed this year a lovely yellow one there was a fair bit of this I took the second picture in this photoset of one, scarlet pimpernel, yarrow, herb-Robert, lady’s-bedstraw which I took the seventh picture in this photoset of today, bird’s-foot trefoil and agrimony.
The glistening sea, sheer cliffs, wild carrot filled fields adorned by many other flowers of the meadow, grassland with the distinctive brown of this time of year, woodland and nice views of pine trees and others and beautifully panoramic views of this wonderful part of Dorset and the country was such a beautiful landscape to observe today. It was great to add Durlston and it’s lighthouse to a few similar and stunning coastal destinations enjoyed this year in Pembrokeshire, Yorkshire and Portland earlier in the year alongside precious flatter coasts at home in a strong year I am having for coast. A seaside day of bliss today with the sun really coming through well whilst out. I took the first, fourth, sixth and final two pictures in this photoset of views here today. I got some stunning views of Corfe Castle on the way here and it looked really nice in the evening sun as I have seen it in before on the way home. What a brilliant day out! Part 1 of today’s posts about the butterflies, moths and other insects seen today is here: https://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/691239863033446400/30th-july-2022-durlston-post-1-of-2-the
Wildlife Sightings Summary: My first ever Oak Eggar moth and Bloody-nosed Beetle, my first of one of my favourite butterflies the Wall Brown this year, my first Lulworth Skipper of the year, my first Silver Y moth of the year, another of my favourite butterflies the Marbled White, one of my favourite moths this Six-Spot Burnet, one of my favourite dragonflies the Southern Hawker, two of my favourite birds the Gannet and Peregrine Falcon, Gatekeeper, Meadow Brown, Speckled Wood, Small Heath, Holly Blue, Common Blue, Comma, possible Small White, possibly Small Skipper too, Stonechat, Whitethroat, Skylark, Woodpigeon, other pigeons, Magpie, possible Raven, Kestrel, Shag, lots of Herring Gulls very evocative of the coast, Great Black-backed Gull, Common Green grasshopper, another cricket/grasshopper, the hoverfly, another fly I seem to recall, bees, Common Red Soldier beetle, Seven-spot Ladybird and Common Lizard.
As we had done on a Dorset trip before we ate some tea on the go on the way back having left Durlston after 5pm at Picket Post car park in the New Forest a beauty spot in the forest where we have walked a lot before, it was lovely to take in beautiful panoramic views here possibly as far down as the Isle of Wight we believe we saw the island from Durlston too earlier today with some nice purple heather just visible I had seen a bit of heather beside the road on the journey out earlier today it was nice to see a village sign into Dorset with a Dartford Warbler on a quintessential heathland bird and a fruit laden tree rowan berries I believe. There were some very pretty sky scenes here and we saw a Blackbird possibly young well walking around in front of the car. A nice bit of time spent in the forest this weekend. I enjoyed Goldfinch on the balcony feeders and the Hedgehog that regularly visits later on in the garden this evening going into our Hedgehog house. I realized from a Facebook memory earlier with the photo I took of my first ever Small Copper butterfly at Godshill in the New Forest on this day in 2011 that today is eleven years since I created this Tumblr as I remember that post (link to it here: https://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/8266050320/new-butterfly-at-godshill) was one of the first I did when I made this Tumblr. I can’t believe its been that long it hasn’t always been solely a nature dedicated Tumblr and I haven’t always posted in the format I do now but its a good point to reflect and thank you all as ever for your kind interactions.

Here’s the next in my new series of drawings!
Scarlet Morningstar with the Ladybug Miraculous
Inspiration/Facts: Her design is a mashup of multiple types of Ladybugs/Lady beetles. The main suit is the Steel Blue Ladybird, boots are the Pink Spotted Lady Beetle, hat/glasses for the seven-spot Ladybird, gloves are the nine-spotted Lady Beetle, hair is the Ashy-Grey Lady beetle, and her flannel is the 22-spot Ladybird. Minus the 7 spot, all the others have the exact amount of spots in their name.  The only other fact is the background is based off of the ladybug/beetles she has on her design. The only exception is the red side which has outlines to match the Eyed Ladybug. It made the background look cooler to me so that’s why I kept it
