time traveling byleth picking all the right answers (for example, telling alois that jeralt is her dad) that she didn't pick the first time around, then proceeding to take classes from him to improve her lance skills, even though she's never cared for a lance
and when he asks her why, she tells him that it's so she can class into Holy Knight and be able to heal her kiddos more effectively
but ACTUALLY, it's so that she can spam recover after kronya leaves until manuela shows up to take over
and if that fails, at least she can be more like him

how would have Rhea raised Billy if Jeralt failed to take them from the monastery? Aside from actually giving a shit about them and not letting them starve on a semi regular basis I mean
See their enlightened one outfit?
They would have gotten tacky outfits in the same style from age 3 onwards, all "made" by the Archbishop herself.
More seriously, I think the plot would change?
Maybe Seteth wouldn't have been "summoned" at the Monastery, if Billy had been there, or he would and would have acted as Billy's caretaker ?
If Billy was raised by Rhea since day 5, I'm pretty sure they would have told her about the gremlin in their head, and that plot would have been solved way earlier, but as to what happens with Supreme Leader's war... idk.
I personally see Billy, in this verse, as someone raised like Sitri, maybe being a monk/random ward in the Monastery, but Billy likes to help people (and smiles at least in the jp!version!) so maybe they would have became some sort of kickass cleric, or a member of the knights of Seiros (Rhea'd disagree at first, she doesn't want them to be hurt and would have prefered if they became a fisherman or something that would keep them away from the battlefield, but Billy makes their own decisions, and wishes to protect the monastery and the people they cares about, maybe being triggered by another assassination attempt targetted at Rhea, maybe Christophe's or someone's else).
Billy'd be good friends with knighs and members of the CoS, maybe take Cyril under their wing (as much as they can) and have wednesday evening sessions of sitting with their "like" family eating Zanado fruits, or even fishing. When they want to become a knight or know how to use weapons "to protect", they could spare with Seteth'n'Rhea and end the "training" sessions with some of Rhea's cookies and Zanado fruit juice.
If Billy's still a teacher in this verse - well, I don't think the entire "crust + church BaD" spiel affects them, hell, they might be a bit more pissed at this entire nonsense and voice their annoyance, why are those nobles blaming the church for their own failings in ruling their lands?
(that's where Seteth has to remind them about this thing called "tongue in check")
Maybe they can decide to travel through Fodlan to make up for the regional branches' failings (but only after Rhea got from the gremlin the promise that Gremlin will keep Billy safe!) - when Supreme Leader comes crashing down with her army?
If Rhea survives, Billy hangs out in Faerghus, but if Rhea is caught, Billy leads a resistance force (like SS) - granted, in this AU, Sothis is around and less of a gremlin that in her canon appearances, so Rhea's freed from her Enbarr jail way earlier than in the game, the Agarthans are toasted and everything's well that ends well.
#anon#replies#fodlan AU#Billy stuff#lizard family time?#Rhea'd of course dote on them#Billy as a member of the CoS imo wouldn't have any of that crust bad shit or crust system#doubly so if they know the secret behind crusts#as for Jerry I guess Rhea would have had everyone who knew him if he really ditched the kid#swear to tell Billy Jerry was the former Captain of the Knights who died heroically holding off against dozens of 'foes' to protect GM#and the people living there - which will play a part in Billy's decision to become a knight too#sure sure it's a lie but it's better than to tell them the truth 'your dad abandoned you because you were not normal enough for him'#cue Billy wondering who is this captain jeralt leonie keeps on mentionning maybe someone who has a similar name ?#Billy teaching 'cousin' Flayn how to fish#cyril was so dumbfounded when Billy sat in front of them and remained silent for twelve entire minutes#before asking him if it's alright to call him 'brother' because otherwise it'd be too complicated#What happens with Sothis in this AU? Frankly idk#FE16#maybe the CoS would have started to look for Agarthans earlier? Or not#Rhea would have stopped being the Archbishop if the knew her mother refused to return and assume her role?#What if Sothis resurrects the dead Nabateans from their Relics selves what happens in Faerghus/Leicester?#will the secret about Nabateans be revealed earlier?#It's basically opening too many possibilities anon lol#what do you think would have happened?

SS continues. Seteth is handsome and I think I would be okay with this normally, but I played VW first and Claude was cuter.
Not to be mean, but that's pretty much literally the only difference so far. Off screen Claude even supporting character magics us into getting the same reinforcements in the same place and going to the same next map. (I tell Seteth I want to go to the Kingdom this time. Seteth says no. I feel like at least Claude didn't pretend I had options. Did I just agree with him on everything...? That is also possible.)
It's kind of... even some of Seteth's lines don't seem to be intended for him. I heard from interview that SS was written first, so I figured that playing it would make VW feel like a reskin, but I dunno if it's the order I did them in, but tbh VW so far feels a more "natural" progression, Edelgard stuff aside.
Aside from that, using church units on the church route has some funny effects like that one general going "your army of children," but I'm actually... using almost entirely adults...
Live blogging notes:
Oh, I didn't notice, but the "village" where we wake up is in ruins. There are burnt remnants and half-collapsed brick walls in the background.
Interesting point: I didn't keep track of the months before, but now I see we fell asleep in March 1181 but wake up in December 1185. I kinda thought it would be the same months, but it's not.
Edelgard's tone at the reunion is...... hum. Not very emotive? Don't get me wrong, Claude doesn't exactly get worked up much either, but Edelgard has a lot more personal stakes in all this, and she should really have a deeper investment in regard to Byleth. It was like this when they parted ways in Garreg Mach too.
Edelgard says "friend from our Black Eagle days have chosen to join me in the fight ahead." But that's... hum. First, why is it a fight ahead for her? She's been fighting for 5 years and is winning, according to the info dump. Second, did the students actually join her? I got them all killed, so I won't know either way, but my impression is that this is not actually the case to begin with.
Edelgard is using a wavy sword... Levin Sword?
Kinda meh sword battle scene.
The fact that Edelgard is older than Byleth now... haha. Claude switches to calling you "my friend" but Edelgard is still pushing the teacher angle.
The info dumps about the political situation post timeskip are slightly different all around, but the only real difference seems to be that Lorenz leads the Empire supporter faction in the Alliance, which iirc was not the case in VW. That checks out. Dimitri is still presumed dead and Faerghus is a Dukedom.
Flayn says she forgot something at the Holy Mausoleum, where we meet up with her... Not sure what this is about. (Update: She and Seteth hang around there later too. Really not sure why.)
SS savefile has the banner I presume Claude also makes you use in VW - kinda blue-grey background with a pink Crest of Flames.
Lol, I killed everyone, but the chapter crawl still says students from the Black Eagle house are working with the Church. Instead I recruited all the Church units, so they show up to help in the new month.
War phase SS has the same monastery music and yellow skybox as VW. Kinda disappointed, tbh. I was (vainly) hoping that each route would get something a little different.
I did notice that they have wooden construction equipment type structures in a lot of places, which I didn't realize before. I guess it's supposed to show how the monastery is in a rundown, damaged state, but even seeing it, I don't think it works too well.
Shamir says that Dagda was "destroyed" ten years ago.
Seteth has been refusing Hanneman's requests for 21 years. So even though Flayn came to the monastery very recently, Seteth has been around for long enough that his physical age is going to start looking weird lol (his info on Serenes Forest says he's physically 27). Notably though, he and Jeralt didn't know each other (iirc), so based on the timeline, Seteth came pretty much immediately after Jeralt faked Byleth's death and disappeared. I wonder if it was because Rhea would have been "in a state" about Byleth's supposed death (and the loss of Sothis's crest stone).
There are no records of anyone except Seteth having a Major Crest of Cichol. In fact, it seems like there's probably no one who has a crest of Cichol at all. Seteth says he is a commoner and has no idea how he ended up with a crest. Hanneman when Byleth says the exact same thing, while being just as sus:
There's some cliff rubble on the monastery defense map... looks like there was a rockslide during the Imperial attack.
The fact that I've forgotten half of VW already is making this a little more tolerable, but looking at the chapter list for VW, we did have a monastery defense map before going to get Judith's troops, and in SS we are...... also going to get Judith's troops.
There's some snippets about how Judith and Daphnel have mostly remained out of Imperial attention and how Judith is a devout follower of the Seiros faith, but tbh it feels out of place here compared to VW.
Oh, there's a spy. Man, was this in VW? I remember nothing.
I've seen this mentioned in fic, but the quest for the Almyran merchant in disguise mentions a Nader bear (which is an Armored Bear Stuffy in your inventory). The thing you give him is "Zoltan's Beast Idol" that mentions the famous craftsman Zoltan who was believed to have made only weapons. I wonder if there's some weapon in the game that was made by him?
Seteth repeats the legend about Ailell being caused by the goddess's wrath after a battle there long ago. Which... is a weird thing, given that he should theoretically know the actual cause -- Agarthan missiles getting deflected from the monastery by the protections on the Holy Tomb.
Oh, Judith suggests she's helping because Claude asked her to. My sus man <3
Reiterating that the Oghma mountains are to the south of the monastery and between it and the Empire. You can't enter the monastery from the Empire directly. You have to go through the Kingdom or the Alliance.
Why do they give you the choice between east and west approaches?? I picked west because I already saw the Alliance stuff, but Seteth just directly shoots you down...
Claude continues to be a proper side character by giving us a way to get into the Empire through the Alliance. "I don't know exactly why, but I feel that I can trust you," my dude, it's because you are a side character who exists to fill the needs of the plot. It's the damn bridge again. SIGH
Also, I was worried for a moment when I couldn't talk to Ashe, but apparently you don't need to. Just kill him and he magically survives. There isn't even a little scene about him coming back or anything...?

TOA Anniversary Munday!
Celebrating TOA and the people who contribute to make our group what it is.
Repost, don't reblog. Only fill in what you feel comfortable sharing!
Happy anniversary, TOA! Here's to many more years spent together.
Tagging: You. Right there. Yes, you.
Name: Sekhmet
Pronouns: she/her
Birthday (no year): 1st September
Where are you from? What is your time zone? Australia! Timezone is AEST (which means it is Tuesday for me not Monday kek)
Roleplay experience: I have been doing some form of roleplay, on an off, for nearly 13 years. I have good memories, and the Horrors(tm). I have spaces I will never return to, and now two RP homes ^^
---
Got any pets? TT^TT Not anymore
Favorite time of year: Spring! Not too hot, not too cold and it's heading away from Winter!
Some interests and things you like: Writing, art, reading, video games, Dungeons and Dragons, teaching!
Some funfacts & trivia about you: When I was in grade 8, during woodworking, I was probably the most accident prone student much to my teacher's horror. I managed to be attacked by the tools every single lesson. Including being attacked by the belt sander, I still have the scar from that. A more fun fact - I have an animation degree! I spent three years of my life learning and specialising in the art of animation! And then I became a teacher XD
What non-Fire Emblem games do you play? There are a lot but from the ones I play the most - World of Warcraft, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy 7, 13, 14 and 15, Pokemon, Hades, Sims 4 if I'm feeling it, Splatoon, Tales of Series games
Favorite Pokemon type & Pokemon: I don't really have a favourite type, cause I like Pokemon by design, but my favourite pokemon would be Dragonair, followed closely by Victini, Snivy evolution line, Popplio evolution line, Umbreon, and Joltik.
---
How did you get into Fire Emblem? Uhh... I found a ROM on the internet one day.... *coughs*
What Fire Emblem games have you played? Shadow Dragon (unfinished), Blazing Blade (unfinished), Sacred Stones (unfinished), Awakening (finished), Fates (finished), Shadows of Valentia (unfinished), Three Houses (finished), Three Hopes (unfinished), Warriors (finished), Heroes (uninstalled and disowned)
First Fire Emblem game: Blazing Blade
Favorite Fire Emblem game: Awakening!
Any Fire Emblem crushes? *coughs* Matt Mercer's characters *coughs* (coincidentally too! Their personalities are just amazing <3) Chrom and Shigure! And also beloved street rat Yuri
If youve played the following games, who was your first S support? Who would you S support nowadays? - Awakening: First - Chrom, now - still Chrom - Fates: First - I honestly don't remember lol, now - Shigure or Nishiki/Kaden - Three Houses: First - incedentally enough, Edelgard, because of who I named Byleth after and I thought the match was funny. It would have been Seteth if Seteth had been available on Crimson Flower!!! Now though - Yuri. - Engage: n/a
Favorite Fire Emblem class: Witch
If you were a Fire Emblem character, what would be your class? .... Witch!
If you were a Three Houses character, what would be your affiliation? ....... Ashen Wolves/Abyss honestly. The AU Sothis followers I made would be how I'd interact with the world and the faith in the goddess, and that would very likely get me called a heretic.
If you were an Engage character, which Emblem would you Engage with? .... I don't know how Engage works XD
---
How did you find TOA? Rua told me! And then dragged me over cause I was trying to make an indie blog, and then I decided to apply instead of lurking like a cryptid.
Current TOA muses: Kinu (Selkie) and Seteth
Who was your first TOA muse? If you don’t have them anymore, could you see yourself picking them up again? Cordelia. Would I pick her up again? Maybe, though she would also be the first I dropped again if I decided to entertain another muse
Have you had any other TOA muses? Not .... yet
Do you think you have a type of character you gravitate towards? Chaotic type muses or serious and eloquently spoken muses - the two halves of my personality!
What do you believe you enjoy writing the most? Angst, writing emotionally deep stuff that makes people scream at me because of the feels I stabbed them with.
Favorite TOA-related memory: When Seteth immediately got bullied after I picked him up XD Please bully him more
How do you pronounce TOA? Tales of the Abyss *cough* Tee-Oh-Ay
Got any delusions that didn’t see the light of day that you’d like to share? A few....! Yuri, Shigure... Veronica or Thrasir... Shareena... The Twins from Warriors.... Mikoto... Takumi... The Rainbow Sage lives in my head rent free, silly old grandpa dragon that he is... Sitri through a lot of convoluted means.... Silque....

Faye's Fòdlan Journal: Season 1 - Episode 3: A Mystery Crest and a Mysterier Roster
<-Previous Masterpost Next->
Had to cut it short on the last episode, so let's just get to the point.
Tumblr media
No promises, Rhea.
By the way, I appreciate the color of the border changing to the one of the house you've chosen to teach. Really nice touch.
Shortly after making our choice, Seteth's younger sister Flayn enters the room. Say hi to her.
Tumblr media
She seems nice and well-mannered. I swear though, her in-game hair looks like a piece of candy.
After being dismissed, Byleth goes to meet their new class, who are obviously surprised to learn they're the new professor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Byleth, interestingly enough, asks to be treated as a friend instead of their professor. Something that really makes me think my idea they really are uncomfortable with their new position at this point. Or at the very least in being in a place of authority. Makes sense, from what we know they've been at Jeralt's side the whole time, so the idea of leading is completely new to them.
The Lions are reluctant to accept their request but eventually relent, since they speak to Dimitri in pretty informal terms and he's their future king. All except Ingrid, who still doesn't feel she could manage not paying the respect she feels owes her superiors. Luckily, Byleth is fine with it.
With Felix proposing a mock battle with Byleth in the future and most of the other students joining in, we bid them farewell for now.
Tumblr media
Understatement of the century, buddy.
Two days pass, and we recieve a pitiful sum of 1000 gold for funding our monthly activities. So we have 1500 gold in total.
Granted, we started the game on 4/20 (yes, really) and we're at 4/26 at this point such a low budget for barely a week of teaching is a bit more forgivable but still, there's a good chance the Officers Academy is underfunded on top of being understaffed.
Also, we heard nothing about a salary. Is Byleth even getting paid for this?
Because if not, no wonder Rhea can't find any teachers.
Her management issues aside, today we're meeting with Hanneman, who really wants to see if Byleth has a Crest using a mysterious device we never see on screen. But since Byleth doesn't know about Crests, Hanneman is more than happy to infodump before that.
I mention they're this world's Holy Blood, and they do work pretty similarly to Jugdral: Really powerful, granted by a goddess, passed down through bloodlines.
Tumblr media
Hanneman claims Crests have a power beyond mortal understanding, but given I have checked and do things like minor situational boosts that are neat but not that impressive (such as Dimitri's Crest occasionally doubling his weapon's Might)... yeah, I'm afraid I am going to need a citation for that.
If they are super powerful in the narrative, then they are doing a poor job at showing it. Which is weird because between the Holy Blood and the Emblems, this series usually does a good job at demonstrating superhuman powers in gameplay.
The reason Crest Detectors exist at all is because unlike Holy Blood, children of a Crest Bearer are not guaranteed to bear it themselves. Crests can in fact, stay dormant for generations only to reawaken in a random descendant.
Tumblr media
Anyway, he believes Byleth has a Crest. We of course know that's the case, because we checked the Status Screen. And given it's listed as a Mystery Crest, this makes his next reaction very understandable.
Tumblr media
True to its name, Byleth's Crest is one that has never been seen before, something that immediately sparks Hanneman's curiosity as he begins to investigate straight away.
But no matter what he finds out, it's pretty much a guarantee their Crest will turn out to be the strongest of them all. We're already beginning to see where the story is going with Byleth and it's not promising.
Hell, their Crest is also identical to the effige Sothis wears so, you know. (I am not even going to try and guess what that jewelry is called)
Tumblr media
Another thing not promising at all is the ingame cutscenes.
This is my biggest criticism of Engage as well: instead of doing anything interesting with them, they consist of all the characters in it standing around talking and having a few stock animations with the same camera movements every time. And if there are any objects, they will at best be shown with a sprite, which is not even the case for Hanneman's device. As of know, I have no idea what it looks like.
I am a bit more forgiving towards Three Houses is only for its much, much larger scope, but given that most of 3H's criticism I see online has to do with poor pacing and padding, reused content and inconsistent characterization... you kinda have to wonder if having such a big scope was even worth it.
In Engage the ingame cutscenes were saved only due to the voice acting and music. I hope I'll be able to say the same for this game.
These criticisms aside, we leave Hanneman to nerd out over Byleth's Crest.
Tumblr media
The next day Rhea introduces us to the Calendar, the defining feature of this game which... looks really daunting. Not gonna lie, my head is starting to spin already.
Luckily for me, we are not going to engage with it this episode. I have a few things I still have to discuss from last episode, after all.
Tumblr media
Let me introduce you to the Roster. It's an option on the Monastery Menu which, contrary to its 3DS incarnation, gives us a LOT of insight on every character, even those not from the house you chose.
On top of the gameplay relevant information like stats, items, skills, classes mastered, Combat Arts and Abilities, you also learn some fun extra information such as their personal history, their height and their age.
This is true for every character... except for one.
You see, Byleth's age is missing.
Tumblr media
As far as I looked, they are the only character for which this happens.
And if other characters claim them to be a child or around the same age of the students who are around 17 but they're actually not... well, there's only one explanation in this series.
Granted Byleth doesn't have pointy years, but I'm pretty sure not counting Alear who came after Byleth, there may be a few other examples of dragons having regular ears? Half-dragons, at least.
Speculations about Byleth's true nature aside, one thing's for sure: the fact the year of their birth as the child of Jeralt is listed as unkown kinda makes me doubt the claims they're his biological child. Because if that was the case, surely he'd know the year they were born, right?
The other thing that caught my eye was reading Dimitri's personal history.
Tumblr media
The Tragedy of Duscur.
We haven't heard this event mentioned in the game proper yet, but the fact Dimitri is listed as the sole survivor and I couldn't find Duscur anywhere on the Fòdlan map (I even checked again)... makes me assume the worst.
It also happened four years before the game's start. Which is also the year Dedue, the only character we know comes from Duscur, swore loyalty to him. At least something good came out of it....?
Oh, and it also means Dimitri got horribly traumatized when he was thirteen. Dear Sothis, no wonder he doesn't want to talk about his past.
Also I'd be very, very suprised if this doesn't come up later during his slippery slope into... whatever his deal in the timeskip is.
In any case, I'm gonna end this short episode here. Next time, we will start our first proper day on the job.

Byleth-Sama: Love is War (Finale)
Original House Isekai AU
Tumblr media
As Sara and Megumi train with those supporting them, Byleth gets to view this cold war from the sidelines, completely unaware of what's even going on...
And the day of the Ball is quickly approaching, who will win this war?
---
[Respite and Sunlight - Fire Emblem: Three Houses OST]
Byleth watched for the fifth time this week as Sara and Megumi glared daggers at each other, walking past without uttering a single word.
He wasn't the only one to have noticed this.
Towa and Angelica appeared to be very worried about how Sara was acting, while Cocytus was confused by their actions.
Normally the two were extremely friendly with one another, now they wouldn't even give them the time of day.
(Cocytus) "THERE THEY GO AGAIN."
(Towa) "Did a fight break out between them?"
(Byleth) "That's what I'm wondering. Everytime I go to ask a student, they just laugh or say nothing."
(Sharon) "Hm...what day is it?"
(Towa) "December 15th. Why?"
Doomguy looked at the calendar, then nodded his head and departed with a wave. It looked like he was in a hurry.
(Sharon) "Ah, that explains it. Tomorrow is the White Heron Cup."
(Byleth) "Huh? What does that have to do with anything?"
(Sharon) "Master Byleth, would you like to take a walk with me?"
Shrugging, Byleth followed along, hoping to get SOME kind of answer out of their quarrel.
Towa, Angelica, and Cocytus were left confused.
[The Forgotten - Fire Emblem: Three Houses OST]
The first place Sharon had taken Byleth was to Abyss.
(Byleth) "Why are we down here?"
Sharon kept her smile and gestured her head towards a crowd.
Byleth raised an eyebrow as he looked closely, seeing Sara move through the crowd and into the narrow hallways.
Sharon put a finger to her lips and quickly trailed Sara, Byleth doing the same.
Finally approaching a room, Sharon stopped Byleth from entering and stood politely next to the walls, overhearing the conversation.
...
(Sara) "Damn it, we still don't have any dresses?!"
(Kazuma) "Where exactly do you think we can find one in a few days? Not even Anna's stocks can come that fast!"
(Yuri) "Not sure why you're down here, it's not like we got anything fancy."
(Edelgard) "You're wearing makeup right now though, right?"
(Yuri) "...Alright fair, but the point is, we got nothing for a fine lady such as yourself."
(Rean) "I'm sure the outfit you picked out will be fine. The worst trouble you'll probably have is just to say no to every other guy that's going to be coming at you."
(Seteth) "It matters not, we have little time to waste."
(Sara) "Hm, I gotta be quick about it. Anywho, back to dance training! Take it from the top, Balthus!"
(Balthus) "You got it!"
...
(Byleth) "Sara's going to the ball? Didn't think she'd care about it besides teacher obligations."
(Sharon) "Well, it's not just Lady Sara."
(Byleth) "Megu-nee too, I'm assuming?"
(Sharon) "You should visit her in the Training Hall, that's where she'll be. If you excuse me, I must get things settled for tomorrow with Rise of the Investigation Team."
She bowed, and took her leave.
(Byleth) "...Sothis."
Sothis materialized next to him.
(Sothis) "Hello, child."
(Byleth) "Did you know about them fighting?"
(Sothis) "Only what you know."
He squinted his eyes at her in disbelief. There's no way with how many times she's floated to Kazuma and the others she'd know absolutely nothing.
(Sothis) "Well, I know they're planning a surprise for you."
(Byleth) "Surprise?"
(Sothis) "Yes, for the Ball. However it'd be a disservice to them if I announced it. Now come, we shall see what Megu-nee is doing."
She floated ahead, making Byleth shrug and follow her.
...
[Like a Dream Come True - Persona 4 OST]
(Rise) "Okay guys, that should be good!"
Rise shouted out to Kanji and Teddie who were busy decorating the walls with hanging ornaments and curtains.
Looking to her right, some of the students from House Isekai were preparing a stage for the music.
Darkness carried 4 crates of decor as if it were nothing, meanwhile behind her Bernadetta was struggling to pick up one.
(Bernadetta) "S-SO...HEAVY!"
(Caspar) "Geez, you gotta use your legs, Bernadetta, otherwise you'll throw out your back!"
Dorothea approached Rise, smiling.
(Dorothea) "The place looks good so far, Rise!"
(Rise) "Thanks, there's no way I could've gotten this done without your guys' help though!"
(Dorothea) "Happy to help out! I'm sure with you, me, and Manuela singing, there's no way anyone could resist us!"
(Rise) "Ooooh good point! Maybe I can ask Yu-senpai to the ball!"
(Dorothea) "You know if it doesn't work out, I'm always available.~"
(Naoto) "Pardon the interruption, but we could use more help over here."
(Ryuji) "Y-YEAH! SHIT'S KINDA HEAVY!"
The Phantom Thieves were busy setting up the wooden platforms for the stage.
Ann put down several chairs, clearly out of breath.
(Ann) "M-MAN...MEDIEVAL CONSTRUCTION SUCKS!"
(Akira) "It's...not great."
(Chie) "I think it helps build character! We gotta get stronger, right? So what better way than carrying these huge blocks of wood!"
(Yukiko) "I'm sure Akihiko-senpai would agree..."
(Yosuke) "Now that I think on it, where the heck are those guys? Shouldn't they be helping us out?"
Sharon entered the room and swiftly helped the Persona Users carry the chairs into the proper spots effortlessly.
(Sharon) "To answer your question, they are currently helping out some of the staff with final preparations. Ainz's group will be here shortly to add some magical effects."
(Rise) "Oh, sweet! I bet Aura and Mare could do something real pretty!"
(Yu) "Whew, thanks Sharon. You're a lifesaver."
Bowing, Sharon made her way to Rise.
(Sharon) "It's time we begin rehearsing, Lady Rise."
(Rise) "Gotcha! Dorothea, can you get Manuela?"
(Dorothea) "Sure thing, I'll be right back."
(Sharon) "And if I may ask something?"
(Rise) "Huh? What is it, Sharon?"
(Sharon) "We have a personal request from Lady Sara and Megu-nee for the ball tomorrow."
(Rise) "Is it related to Byleth-sensei?"
(Sharon) "It is."
(Rise) "Sure, let's hear it!"
Sharon leaned into Rise's ear and whispered.
(Rise) "Hm...Yeah, we can do that! We have any instruments here? I think I got an idea for what we can do!"
[Diablo Rojo - Rodrigo y Gabriela]
Byleth peeked into the training hall where Megumi was, alongside Doomguy, Dimitri, Minako, and the School-Living Club.
Byleth watched as Megumi tried her best to stay in rhythm with Doomguy's guitar skill.
Dimitri, Yuki, and Miki watched in amazement as Doomguy played an acoustic guitar with such precision and speed that it'd most likely stun anyone else watching.
The music he was playing seemed completely foreign to Byleth and Sothis.
Megumi was dancing with Yuuri as practice while Kurumi tapped her foot to the rhythm.
...
(Dimitri) "I wasn't aware he had such musical talent!"
(Yuki) "Mhm, Slayer is really cool!"
(Miki) "T-This is a ball right? This seems more like a Hispanic style song rather than classical.
Megumi and Yuuri twirled and kept their feet bouncing to the rhythm as Yuuri tried her best to guide her teacher.
(Kurumi) "It's pretty catchy! Besides with how many of us have been preparing to sing for the ball, we're bound to have some music choices to dance to that isn't normal here!"
(Yuki) "Ooh, think we can do disco! Futaba has her laptop so we can put it on the speakers!"
(Minako) "Oooh, yeah! Japanese disco has some good stuff we can all jam to!"
Doomguy shrugged as he kept playing, his beat getting faster.
(Megumi) "A-Am I really going to be dancing at this speed with Byleth?!"
(Yuuri) "Hah, I'm a bit more worried for the rest of the people who haven't heard this kind of music, Megu-nee!"
...
(Sothis) "Interesting choice of music! It sounds quite energetic."
(Byleth) "I've only heard something kind of close when I was younger."
(Sothis) "...Ah, the taverns Jeralt took you out to. I remember, how noisy it was."
(Byleth) "Wait, Megu-nee is training to dance with me?"
(Sothis) "So was Sara."
(Byleth) "Ah, I think I finally understand now."
(Sothis) "Do you?"
(Byleth) "Yeah. They're just training for the Ball in case if someone asks them. After all, Akira is representing us for the White Heron Cup, it'd look bad if all of us didn't try for the Ball either."
(Sothis) "...Sure, something like that."
(Byleth) "I should probably get ready myself for tomorrow."
(Sothis) "Hah, yes you should, Child. Yes you should."
...
Night of the Ball
[Night of the Ball - Fire Emblem: Three Houses OST]
When the night of the ball finally arrived after the White Heron Cup, House Isekai enjoyed their time partaking in it with the rest of the Houses.
The Phantom Thieves watched from the sidelines and congratulated Akira on the win, loading up on the free food.
Ainz's group attended wearing dresses suited to the ocassion, white dresses and suits, though they did not dance with anyone, Ainz was asked by Albedo, Shalltear, and the Pleiades.
As soon as the main orchestra finished, the Investigation Team got up on stage with Rise, ready to start the night with House special music, followed by the rest of the three Houses.
Class VII was mixed around everywhere, Elliot and Rean playing a little bit of music with a violin and guitar in a corner, with Emma and Alisa singing. Jusis, Laura, Fie, Crow, and Machias abstained from participating in anything. Millium was with Teddie.
The School-Living Club was trying their best to keep up with Yuki who went to everyone in the House, excitedly conversing with them.
Kazuma and Aqua were too busy drinking the wine while Darkness remained her best to remain vigilant and vehemently refuse anyone's request for dancing, though the only exception was Kazuma and Ashe. Megumin was bored out of her mind.
S.E.E.S felt awkward and stood with Ainz's group, not having ever participated in something like a ball before, with the exception of Mitsuru.
Finally, the staff was mingling among themselves with the rest of Garreg Mach's professors, with the sole exceptions of Sara and Megumi.
The two were glaring at each other at opposite sides of the room. As they kept staring, more and more of the houses began to notice, anticipating who would strike first.
(Megumi) "..."
(Sara) "..."
Everyone held their breath, waiting for either of them to step forward to Byleth was busy speaking to Jeralt.
(Byleth) ...? "What's with the them?"
(Jeralt) "Eh? Oh, that. Heh. Choose wisely, kid."
(Byleth) "What? Choose what?"
Jeralt laughed and pat him on the back, getting the message subtly and backing off and leaving him open.
Sara was the first one to move towards him, gently going through the crowd.
Megumi jumped into action and walked quickly through the food tables and made her way through the Blue Lions in order to reach her.
Sara's path was blocked by a drunk Aqua and Kazuma while Megumi's stride came to a halt from Ingrid, Raphael, Chie, Ann, Ryuji, and Minako devouring everything in sight.
Everyone was now anxious, seeing which one of their teachers would get there first.
(Sara) "I HAVE TO MAKE IT FIRST, OUTTA THE WAY YOU TWO!"
(Megumi) "P-Please excuse me, please move it!"
As soon as the two of them began to make their final approach, their hearts stopped.
Sharon had just stepped in front of Byleth.
(Sharon) "Master Byleth, would you care for a dance?"
(Kazuma) "Eh...EH?!"
(Aqua) "WHAT?!"
(Edelgard) "YOU WHAT?!"
(Rean) "Oh you have got to be kidding me."
(Seteth) "Well, looks like I just wasted my time."
Doomguy raised an eyebrow.
(Dimitri) "WHAT IN THE SEVEN HELLS?!"
(Minako) "There's ALWAYS A THIRD, GOD DAMN IT!"
(Yuki) "SHARON, NOOOOOO!-"
(Yuri) "Well good thing we didn't buy a dress."
(Byleth) "Sure."
Byleth took Sharon's hand as she went to the middle and began dancing with all the others, leaving Sara and Megumi in shock.
(Megumi) "W-Wha...but...!"
(Sara) "Son of a BITCH! I'M GONNA KILL THAT MAID!"
All of a sudden, Claude's laugh could be heard throughout the entire hall.
The students turned to him as he was keeling over laughing.
(Edelgard) "Don't tell me..."
(Dimitri) "You interfered, didn't you?!"
(Claude) "All I asked Sharon was make this dance interesting, hoho man! Didn't think she would do that!"
Minako grabbed Claude by the collar, with Kazuma and Aqua behind her.
(Minako) "MY EAR DRUMS GOT RUPTURED TO HELP MEGU-NEE OUT YOU SICK BASTARD!"
Doomguy began awkwardly whistling underneath his helmet.
(Kazuma) "THAT OUTFIT, THAT SUPER HOT OUTFIT I GOT FOR SARA, IT COST ME 3000 GOLD YOU ASSHOLE!"
While everyone began chastising Claude, Megumi and Sara were left next to each other, still in disbelief.
Until Megumi started laughing.
Sara turned to her, but then couldn't help but laugh herself.
It was kind of funny, they were trying so hard only to realize Byleth wouldn't have known about their intents unless they literally told him to his face.
(Megumi) "...S-Sara? I'm s-"
(Sara) "Nope, don't you DARE apologize. I was the one who started this whole thing anyway."
Sighing, half mockingly at herself but finally out of relief, Sara raised a hand to Megumi.
(Sara) "You were practicing hard too right? We can't let it go to waste after all."
(Megumi) "Hah, Sara would you like to dance with me?"
(Sara) "Sure thing, Megu-nee."
Sara took her hand and both of them joined the dance, alongside several other students and teachers as Rise began her song, with Yu at the mic as well.
(Rise) "Alright, one, two, one two three four!-"
[Love Dramatic - Love is War]
Sothis floated over to Doomguy and Coctyus, relaxing with the rest of the staff as she watched everyone dance.
(Sothis) "How anti-climatic..."
(Cocytus) "IS THAT WHAT THEY'VE BEEN FIGHTING FOR ALL THIS WEEK? I'D LAUGH AT THE RESULT IF IT DIDN'T WORRY EVERYONE IN THE MONASTERY."
(Towa) "At least all's well that ends well, right Instructor Coctytus?"
(Angelica) "If that's what we can call it, if Sara doesn't murder Sharon."
Doomguy shrugged, mildly annoyed but equally amused.
(Sothis) "I suppose as long as everyone's happy."
(Cocytus) "AT LEAST SOME OF THEM ARE..."
Their attention turned back to Claude who now had a mob chasing after him.
But that was lost on Sara and Megumi who continued to dance while Byleth had been stolen by someone with a sick sense of humor who'd been spectating out of curiousity.
And Claude.

Marianne smiles gently, her fingers curled around her own mug. It has a little more ginger in it -- it's always soothed her, and given her the little bit of energy that she needs to get through her day -- and notes with satisfaction when Byleth takes a sip of theirs. She waits until her former teacher ( her leader, her friend ) takes care of themself enough for Marianne's satisfaction. And then she takes a moment to relish in her own.
There may always be a quiet jangle of nerves in the pit of her stomach, but she greets it now like one would an old, familiar acquaintance; Byleth's office is safer than most places, but that's not the point -- the point is that it's okay that the world is large and difficult to navigate, and that Byleth feels comfortable enough to speak their mind. Because if the world is as large as Marianne has learned and feared it was for so long, that makes it heavy too, and there's no remedy better than carrying that weight with someone else.
❝ Seteth has always been so smart and steadfast, ❞ she agrees, taking another sip and carefully watching to make sure Byleth does the same. ❝ But I do hope you haven't entertained those proposals. ❞ Something twists in her gut -- the idea of someone who has so staunchly championed every Deer's right to forge their own destiny tying themself down for a reason as tenuous and ever changing as political alliances is bitter to fathom.
She doesn't startle when the spoon pops out of the cup from the force, just watches its trajectory and then quietly picks it up and places it on the table. ❝ Oh no, please don't apologize. I want to -- I want to listen. I want to do more than that. We all do, you know. ❞ Marianne presses a finger to her lip, but she doesn't cut herself off. ❝ Lorenz is actually very knowledgeable in matters of money and spending, and Hilda knows so much about events and balls and -- and how strange it can feel to be in noble spaces. And I -- ❞ If she has learned anything -- from Byleth, from the war -- it is courage. It is what she's capable of. ❝ I've been learning more from my father, when it comes to estate management. And how to take care of yourself so you can be there for those who need you. I'm happy to help. I -- I want to help. ❞

[ SECRET ] While the festival is supposed to be family-friendly, and indeed more children than usual run through the streets, you catch wind of a tavern in some forgotten alley of the town where one can go for some “adult” entertainment. Like wine tasting. Just wine tasting. (don’t tell the clergy).
Having heard whispers of a seedy tavern providing adult entertainment, Hilda couldn't help but grow curious. She wasn't certain if students were strictly permitted to go, but, well, she was an adult, wasn't she? In the havoc of the celebrations, she casually made her way towards the street that led into town with a surreptitious glance over her shoulder to see whether any of the teachers were paying attention. She turned back to hurry along, only to find herself face-to-face with the Golden Deer professor.
"Oh, Professor!" she exclaimed with a nervous laugh. Clearing her throat and regaining her composure, she continued, "What are you doing all the way out here?"
Night was settling in but the festivities were only just getting started. Music spilled out of the taverns of the town as people merrily drank and danced the darkness away. Though familiar with them, pubs were not Byleth's idea of an ideal haunt. Give her a tea cafe any day instead. However, she had heard the rumours of less savoury places offering wine tasting to students and naturally the Church did not approve. So she'd been tasked to check it out and ensure no students were partaking in this temptation.
The downside of the responsibility of being a teacher.
It wasn't difficult to locate the correct place and Byleth pushed open the door. A quick survey of the room immediately revealed a number of students causing the professor to roll her eyes unsurprised.
"Hello Hilda" She greeted, feeling satisfied at startling the pink- haired lady. "Oh you know, looking for errant students"
Truthfully, Byleth wasn't that bothered by what students got up too as long as they didn't get hurt or neglect their training. Who was she to judge their life choices?
"I take it your here for some wine tasting" Grabbing the barkeeps attention, she ordered a few glasses for the pair of them. "I guess if I'm here, I can stop it getting too out of hand" Goblets filled with dark claret liquid were delivered to their table with a smile and a wink.
Not a big drinker herself , mostly due to Jeralt's influence, Byleth eyed the cup warily. It was only one glass, how bad could it be? Taking a tentative sip, she was immediately hit by the sharp taste of the alcohol. It shared more similarities with lighter fluid than anything as Byleth resisted the want to spit it back in the cup. Maybe Hilda would find it more to her liking.
There was little doubt about the validity of this 'wine', suspecting to be some form of moonshine. No wonder the Church wanted to dissuade students from drinking here. Drunk students loose in the town would damage the Academy's reputation and cause Seteth a heart attack.
"eugh. Well it's go a . . . distinct flavour" She said hesitantly. Even with her small sip, the mercenary could feel her tongue loosen along with her control. It would be fun just to let loose for an evening. It wouldn't take that much persuasion.
Many a new rumour originated from that tavern that evening. Some were more believable than other but most involved a teal-haired professor. Who could say how may were true . . .

—on self confidence , or rather , a lack thereof.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
             ||. For me, one of the most interesting aspects about Byleth is that for as fierce and strong-willed as she is  . . .  she is not actually all that confident. Not in herself. Definitely not when it counts. This lack of self-confidence and constant self-critique is especially obvious in her battle quotes. Some examples:
”i’m not setting a very good example” / “such power dwells within?” / “not my best” / “there is still room for improvement.” / “should i have held back?” / “i must lead them well.”
And there are moments - ESPECIALLY in silver snow where Byleth herself IS the leading lord - where that lack of confidence  . . .  that lack of direction really take front and center stage. When Seteth reminds her of Rhea’s request for Byleth to take over the church in her stead, what are Byleth’s options?
"I remember.” / “I can’t do that.”
When Seteth pushes Byleth to take up the mantle set apart for her?
“Why me?“ / “You should lead them.” / “I don’t want to fight Edelgard.”
When shes talking to Judith in Silver Snow, it comes up again. Most likely the same happens when Claude brings up becoming leader of Fódlan in VW. In Azure Moon, she rightfully pushes back against Dimitri’s hotheadedness, but has a tendency to back off when he snaps at her too harshly.         Multiple times in the academy phase she is noted to work herself to exhaustion by her students just to make sure she’s doing the best she can for them. That’s not even getting into the meta of using Divine Pulse as a mechanic to keep her friends alive, or other instances like the quest “A Question of Conduct” where Byleth accepts a tournament duel because some students don’t like that she’s gotten very close with the main cast — enough so to call them friends. (She could’ve just ignored it. Or not accepted the quest at all. Because she doesn’t HAVE to prove anything to anyone. All in all it’s a pretty brash thing for her to do. Not out of character, but definitely a reaction you’d have to REALLY push her buttons to get out of her.)
All of this to say. . . for as calm and tranquil (and “put together”) as she comes off, and for all of her skill and prowess, ultimately Byleth isn’t . . . particularly confident when it comes to herself personally. Which tracks, given how little she knows about herself, how many questions she has about her past, her powers, and all of the secrets being kept about her and from her from day one.
That of course isn’t to say there ISN’T confidence in her. When she knows what to do and how to do it, she’s fantastic. On the battlefield? Especially when she gets to be tactician? Wonderful. That’s her element. And she’s more than willing and capable of learning new things. Clearly, failure in learning isn’t seen as a BAD THING for her. (she’d make for a terrible teacher if it was.) But, for instance, when failure can cost a life (divine pulse), or the future of Fódlan (sothis’ legacy, actually her fate in war phase route she takes), or even just her interpersonal relationships with people she’s growing to deeply care for (see: Dimi’s madness in AM, the aforementioned quest) . . . that is where doubts are. That’s where the insecurities fester. And she doesn’t talk about them. So they cut deep.

Wrt Billy, I think the irl angle of teacher/student is what throws people off and causes them to draw the line in comparison to lord/retainer and noble/commoner even if a) the game outright throws any gap out the window by saying they're going to treat Billy as an equal b) there's a dlc quest that pokes fun at this and c) a hermit mercenary becoming a professor despite no teacher/professor license is kinda ridiculous as it is. If Billy was a student, this convo wouldn't be a thing ultimately
I loved that NPC quest lol, it's as if the devs wanted to make fun of the discourse around this question ^^
Teacher/student brings, imo, more discourse bcs people project a lot, and nowadays, you have more opportunities to see a teacher/student romance (look at our president!) over a lord/retainer one
But ultimately the "scandal" has always the same basis : power dynamics.
IRL and nowadays, teachers are supposed to have some sort of authority over a student - just like Lords had some sort of authority over their retainers, and nobles over peons.
However, in Billy's case, it completely falls flat if, say, Billy wooes Supreme Leader - Supreme Leader, even if she is a student, is still the Imperial Heir, someone who can swap Billy with her axe and have them removed because, Supreme Leader is much more important and has more power/authority than a random who teaches at a prestigious school; but at the end of the day, is just a random.
And given how Nobles manage to, hm, dictate, to some extent, what should and shouldn't be done in GM (iirc Seteth mentions something about accomodations?), even if Billy is a teacher in GM, if a top brass kid makes a fuss about them, even if Billy's Rhea favourite teacher, they'll be kicked out (or sent to the abyss, or maybe use a hair dye).
also, between Billy and Manu, I don't even know if teaching licenses are a thing in Fodlan, or how Garreg Mach recruits teachers lol

Started a low effort playthrough of 3H Golden Deer. I actually played part of Blue Lions a year? two years? ago and got up to the month where you choose the dancer, but then just kind of put it down and didn't touch it again.
This time, I'm going to play the least emotionally involved route (or so I hear) with the least politicking, no talking to NPCs, no looking up anything about anyone's optimal builds, minimal grinding, keeping the recruiting down. Hopefully, I'll be able to get through it this way.
So far, without the personal connection the Blue Lions had to the missions, the story slants much more toward the mythological aspect, with a side of "Claude is kind of sus, what's his deal."
The progression of lore is actually pretty clean and direct. Red Canyon is a long term mystery, then we see a Relic for the first time (via Catheryne), then we get our super-Relic (Sword of the Creator), then Nemesis is introduced and our Crest of Flames, then we find out that Relics have a dark side (turning people into Black Beasts).
It holds together pretty well as a fantasy adventure kind of story, so far.
However, it does run into the flipside - (non-Avatar) characters aside from Claude and maybe Lorenz feels entirely disconnected from the storyline. Every time we get a whole class group discussion about things, it's very... awkward, because these characters were dumped on you en masse from the very start, and none of them know each OR have anything to contribute. Even once you start getting their supports, they're largely so low-stakes and simple that they don't feel like they explain the class being adjacent to the Relics and Church storyline.
Additionally, it's not immediately noticeable if you're not keeping track, but the fact that we go to the Kingdom twice is weird. We don't go to Alliance (so far), we don't go to Empire... you're just arbitrarily leaving out two thirds of the continent, including your team's homeland.
And at the same time, the more Blue Lions related aspects weren't removed from the quests entirely. Catheryne name drops the Tragedy of Duscur in a way that is very specific and too detailed for an event that's nearly irrelevant for this route. It's good in Blue because you'll be hearing about Duscur a lot from supports and such, but on Gold? You hear about Almyra, but Duscur is just a mystery noun that feels important and yet isn't. Same for stuff like the Miklan chapter being named "The Gautier Inheritance" when you're quite likely not even keeping track of what Gautier even is, or him not having a Crest coming up out of left field depending on your dialogue choices (since you're not told why he was disowned unless you picked that option).
Even Edelgard becomes a weird kind of existence that isn't really present until she suddenly barges into a scene between Claude and Byleth, where she... really just serves a ham-fisted segue into listing off all the ways Claude is sus and him dropping on you that he has a totally selfless dream, promise.
The route format of 3H is really... it's just not great.
Minor notes I took while playing, nothing interesting:
Year 91 "do you remember the Red Canyon"
"you took everything I loved" lol what about your other siblings?
birthday day 25 of moon 12 lol
chose "dreamed of a girl", Jeralt says he doesn't recognize her, this is a recurring dream, which Byleth has told him about, wonder what he says if you choose you dreamed about a war
Jeralt doesn't know Seteth, wonder why
Jeralt tells Rhea that Byleth was born many years after he left the monastery. Presumably Byleth saying they don't know their age is to facilitate this lie.
the fact that you choose a house so early is sending me
three way battle is intended to gauge current progress... But presumably this refers to their starting level, since they haven't even been assigned teachers yet
tbh this game is kinda disappointing visually
voice acting is good tho
the houses are explicitly "for students of X nation" which makes the cross-house recruiting so ridiculous...
unlike holy blood in Genealogy or Awakening, Crests don't seem to have a physical mark on bearers. Hanneman uses a machine to check its shape and doesn't ask about any birthmarks
I saw a windmill in a panning shot, but I can't see it while exploring :(
"I had a bunch of other schemes too" other schemes?? You didn't do even one scheme, Claude
the announcer on the chapter namecards and the new month images is uh... I can't say it does much does much for me
sothis music is cool
why was Zanado renamed to Red Canyon, Claude wonders, it's not very red L M A O
For Lonato's mission, we're only handling the "aftermath" when the bulk of the fighting has already been done by the Knights of Seiros
Tragedy of Duscur was 4 years ago. There were accomplices within the Kingdom and one of them was Christopher, Lonato's son. The Church passed down judgement on in place of the Kingdom, which was in chaos. Supposedly. (This won't really matter on GD, I guess)
some soldiers slipped past the knights using the fog
Claude was only recognized as Riegan heir a year ago.
Rhea is admittedly sus about "I hope the students learn not to fuck with the church" but I've heard Things about localization changes, so I wonder if this was there in the JP script too.
The tone of the deer group discussions tho...
Hilda's brother beat "Nader the Undefeated" and Claude claims (unclear if true) that Almyra has been keeping quiet recently because they're wary of him.
Ignatz's family has received the patronage of House Gloucester
The Relics glow red when used by someone with a compatible Crest.
The Flame Emperor, at minimum, knows that the Crest Stones set in the weapons are part of their power, but I'm not sure if normal nobles do. Like, has a relic ever had the Crest Stone removed?
Nemesis was the King of Liberation. Weird that they let him keep such a positive sounding title, though I guess they're selling it as him being originally worthy of being given the goddess's power.
It's kind of implied he might have a bloodline (aka descendants) but we don't actually see any, right? I guess it's just an excuse for why Byleth can use the sword.
It's been more than a thousand years since he got his ass handed to him.
Fodlan was attacked by "wicked gods" lol
Rhea hasn't explained anything about Byleth to Seteth. Which is... a choice. Does she think he won't approve of her mom necromancy attempts
Sothis says the sword feels distinct from "other Relics we've seen" GIRL we've seen ONE
Claude "finally found" the sword... so he was looking for it?? He wanted to use it?!
Judith out of nowhere
This is very funny because Claude previously said his grandfather is disgustingly healthy. 4shadowing... OR--
Byleth's crest is too... big?? to be analyzed like other crests
students do the grocery shopping, cleaning at least some common areas... These are noble kids tho.
Raphael and Ignatz have known each other since they were kids. Notable that I think they're the only ones with history in GD
Hilda and Leonie C rank... Hilda complains about organizing the library, background is the woods. Something here is not right.
Claude is very interested that Miklan had been using the Lance without a Crest.... Which is very funny because I didn't get the dialogue path about why he was disowned and didn't talk to anyone else, so I think him not having a Crest just gets dropped here out of nowhere
Claude is also very funny going "oh, you're counting on me? How about you give me your magic sword then? Haha, I'm joking" after we already had the scene of him saying he had been looking for it before
no option to keep the Lance of Ruin, guess it requires Sylvain?
I don't remember this scene of Tomas being ominous and also sus
Edelgard out of nowhere. Kind of abrupt, especially since it seems just a segue into talking about Clayde’s lack of history
Claude used to have an uncle, his mom's older brother, but he died

Fire Emblem: Three Houses and my Thoughts on the Black Eagles run
At the time of this writing, I've finished, in this order: Black Eagles, Ashen Wolves, Golden Deer, and Blue Lions. So, general thoughts first and then I'll break down each House and what I thought of their routes. All routes were done with Female Byleth. Spoilers ahead, so be forewarned. This part will be about the Black Eagles and my general thoughts.
I love this game. It is such a blast to play through and it's nice actually playing a teacher that has to help their student to get better while also having that slice of life stuff I just love a lot. Please give me more slice-of-life stuff like this in video games. Gameplay is fun, the story is great, and I do not regret buying a Switch for this and Shin Megami Tensei V. I always say that it's ethical to pirate from Nintendo, but given that I was really curious about it, I'll make an exception for my usual "Do Not Buy" policy when it comes to Nintendo.
Now, onto the Houses.
Black Eagles
The Black Eagles are, without a doubt, some of my favorite party members from start to finish and, due to me not hearing much of anything from the fandom about this route beyond "I am Ferdinand von Aegir", I thought it appropriate to pick this route first.
Man, that was one adventure I was not expecting at all!
So, the main goal of the Black Eagles can be summarized like this: A bunch of folks that believe in a meritocracy decide to team up with some evil edgelords to take out the Catholic Church and personally murder their immortal pope, who just happens to be the one the Catholic Church is named after, and can also turn into a giant dragon to wreck shit up. After taking out the Catholic Church, they then backstab the evil edgelords over time. That's pretty much what's happening in the Black Eagles route. I, for one, love this.
Edelgard is one of my favorites and I adore her goals and motivations as to why she is doing this. Taking down the Church is always a worthwhile goal and, while I do like Seteth and Flayn, I'm not fond of Catherine (who is OK with doing really fucked up shit) and Rhea (who just happens to be OK with murder without trials). Is it any wonder that at the route split, I sided with Edelgard and not the Church? Also, a minor tidbit, but the reason why she donned the moniker the Flame Emperor is one that actually flew over my head hard. I thought she named herself that because she wanted to burn the Church down. Turns out, she has the Crest of Flames along with the Crest of Seiros and that's why she's the Flame Emperor. Yeah, that flew over my head. Talk about an obvious miss there. Was clearly having 20/20 Bimbo Perception that day.
Hubert is a goth murder hobo done right. Unlike Dimitri (and we will get to him when I get to writing about the Blue Lions), his murderous tendencies are controlled. There's a purpose for why he does the heavy killing load for Edelgard. He is so loyal to her that he killed his own father for betraying her. That is how loyal he is to her. I loved his character and, unlike another Robbie Daymond-voiced murder hobo, I get where he's coming from. He's also relatively useful in combat and I do dig him as my black magic user for sure.
Linhardt is the healer of the group and I loved him the second with his quick intro: "Lindhardt. Goodbye". Quick, efficient, and shows exactly the kind of character he is. He's the one I relate to the most in the Black Eagles route: I too want nothing more to do than to sleep, shirk off hard work, and study all the time. He was an instant recruit from me when I played the other runs, if only because I didn't want to kill him.
Petra is my main swordswoman and I generally love her story arc, with her being technically a prisoner from her homeland of Brigid. She's sweet but tough and I do like how she tries to learn the culture in Fodlan. She also was a recruit in my Golden Deer and Blue Lions runs, but sadly, she was just mainly recruited, not exactly used often due to the presence of Felix and Yuri.
Bernadetta, my adorable sweetheart! A lot of folks would find her fear of everything annoying, but the second I found out why, I was like, "OK, you are officially under my protection. Where is your fuckhead father so that I can bury his ass six feet under?" I am so disappointed that we do not even get even an iota of a chance to beat his ass in (or at least have Hubert mention killing him). In short, one of the best archers you can have, and while she was recruited in Golden Deer, I actually didn't recruit her in Blue Lions. Well. Fuck.
Caspar is fun. I like him. He's impulsive, brash, and just the fun of the Black Eagles. And a decent brawler too. A shame that he's actually sidelined in both my Golden Deer and Blue Lions runs due to Balthus (in the other three runs) and Raphael (in the Golden Deer run).
Dorothea was my Gremory (when I reached that class) by the end of the game and while she's a decent mage, she does get outclassed by both Hubert and Linhardt in my Black Eagles run. I do love her interactions with everybody, so that was fun. Definitely worth having, if only so that you don't separate her from Manuela.
I figured to add Jeritza here as he's exclusive to the Black Eagles, Crimson Flower route: He's OP as fuck. That man can take a hit and keep going. Also, another murder hobo, and given the reason why he went murder hobo, I can only say this: He was doing the Goddess Sothis' work on taking out his father and the rest of the Bartels out. I do not feel sorry for Baron Bartels for thinking he can even try... *that*. Ew. Gross as fuck.
And I saved the man, the meme himself, for last: Ferdinand von Aegir. He is not just a meme, he's an awesome character and by far, my favorite himbo in all of Fodlan. He was my Dancer in this run and may I say that he looked amazing in his Dancer outfit. Not to mention that I just loved how he interacted with everyone. Billy Kametz's performance as him is nothing short of excellent. Fun fact, I actually listened to his duet with Robbie Daymond in a "This is totally not Hubert and Ferdinand we're singing as *wink*" song and I did not get the context of it at first until I played the game. Now afterward, I get the context. And I aimed for that Hubert x Ferdinand ending because I like how they contrast each other. He also was an instant recruit and while he didn't get used as much in Golden Deer or Blue Lions, he's still a favorite and I did not want to fight against him.
In short, Black Eagles are 10/10, would play this route again, and will always side with Edelgard. Down with Megalomaniacal Dragon Gods. Will get to writing about the other routes soon.

out of the red canyon
FE:3H academy phase -> TW whump of minors (teens), (temporary) character death of same
---
They brought me back with them, of course, though I don't remember it.
I think I was having conversations with Sothis most of the way home to Garreg Mach; she and I were standing in a room with sunlight falling at strange angles, and she was telling me how we'd actually had a very good day after all. I didn't believe her, but she kept talking anyway. Sothis was good at that.
"Teacher, dear," Edelgard was saying, somewhere outside the room with the sunlight in it. "Please wake up. Flayn's crying, and nobody knows what to do about it."
"Seteth is going to skin us if he comes in and Flayn's crying," said Caspar. "Just so you know."
Someone was coughing, too, a painful rib-scraping sound with gasps in between. I remembered Yuri bent over in the canyon dust, hacking up phlegm and purpleish blood in the shadow of the Demonic Beast. I remembered Shamir staggering against a background of shimmering poison fog. Or was she on the rock-strewn ground instead, neck askew and eyes empty, one bloodied hand reaching out for her bow? The afterimage burned behind my eyes wavered, cloudy.
"...if we hadn't followed her..." I heard Ferdinand's hushed murmur, almost frightened.
Ferdinand fell limp to the ground, horse stumbling, amid the cloud of rubble, and fell again, and again.
"...had to break some of her bones again to mend them properly," Manuela's voice said. "No, it's not anyone's fault - just sometimes a vulnerary gulped down in the middle of a battle isn't the end-all and be-all of medicine, you know..."
I saw the wolf's claws sweeping towards me, rotten with dirt and the remnants of its prey, and flinched back, into the fresh embrace of pain. A half-gloved hand rested on my forehead, somewhere beyond where Sothis smiled patiently at me and brought me up again from the dirt, rewinding time and pulling my shattered unbeating heart back into life.
"...running a fever." Edelgard again, a sharp worried note in that I barely knew how to place. "Can't you do anything more? She's burning up."
Burning, like the sun in the cloudless blue sky. But the wings of the giant bird blotted out the sun, as Petra lay in a lifeless heap below. Or was she on her feet, stumbling, hair dark gleaming crimson in the sun, shrieking a Brigid war cry as she swung her sword at its outstretched talons?
I didn't know. I wanted to look up and find out, but my eyes were so heavy, and the blankets pinned me down without doing anything to stop my shivers. I sobbed, my throat aching, because I didn't know if I'd been good enough to save them all, all of my students who'd followed me fearless into the jagged canyon's mouth.
...Jeralt would tell me if any of them had died. He always told me the truth.
But Jeralt wasn't here. I had seen him fall, too, that day in the ruined chapel, and this time there was no other memory to contradict.
"Teacher," said Edelgard, and I could smell the faint scent of battle and ashes and sweat on her, and feel her breath on my face. Hers was the hand against my cheek, I thought, hazily - a strangely warm solid point in the midst of a cold strange world.
"Teacher," said Dorothea, "wake up." She stood on the edge of the precipice, wreathed in gleaming sigils, upraised hand sending burning white meteors rushing towards the demonic beast looming above me.
But that wasn't now. That was memories. I knew that.
Safe, I signed, my fingers sluggish on the blankets. The very tendons of my arm ached at the motion. Safe all you... question.
Someone caught their breath, sharp and sudden.
"Yes, we're all safe, Teacher."
Yuri's voice, hoarse and gravelled between coughs, from somewhere not far away - "We're here anyway."
"Go to them," said Sothis, her small face solemn beneath the green masses of her braids. The sunlight came from behind her and from her own hands at the same time. "And you were telling me you weren't the favorite professor!"
Every time I had fallen, I had gotten up. That was my gift, for whatever reason, from whatever source. I used it for myself but I had used it for them, too, and it would be enough; it had to be enough...
I opened my eyes.
The infirmary, in its candlelit evening dim. Manuela, standing by the next bed over, with an arm under Yuri's shaking shoulders as she guided a cup to his lips. Flayn wrapped in a quilt by the fireplace, sniffling into an immense handkerchief, with Ferdinand tentatively patting her back. Shamir sitting on the floor, her arm in a sling, scowling and sipping soup one-handed from a bowl. Caspar leaning against the wall by the window. Bernadetta rocking back and forth on the edge of a chair nearby, with Hapi rubbing her shoulders and Constance fussing with the bandage on her own forehead. Dorothea standing on one side of my bed, twisting her hands together. Edelgard on the other side, kneeling, her dirt-smudged face level to me and her eyes gravely fixed on my face.
Sothis was still there, sitting at the foot of the bed; she nodded at me, before I blinked and she was gone.
They were safe - my Black Eagles. I felt the unfamiliar shape of a smile stretch across my lips, and leaned into Edelgard's hand.
Happy, I signed, and let my eyes close again.

fr tho like the SS version of the reunion scene is like by far the worst one. Cuz all the other ones make a certain amount of sense? Like Dimitri's there cuz he just "ends up" there in his wanderings (according to his post-timeskip profile), Claude's expecting Byleth to return cuz he's the only one who like KNOWS knows about Sothis living in Byleth's head so him expecting them to live isn't that far-fetched, and Edelgard ON CF missing Byleth cuz like ~they chose her~ is meh but at least it's something cuz there Byleth like showed her that they're at least on the ride side of ride or die for her.
SS tho has Edelgard try to murder Byleth after betraying them, Byleth try to murder Edelgard for the whole war and murder thing... and then Edelgard is ~waiting for Byleth~ to come back. But like. What if the player chose to actively antagonize her, or never got any of her supports, or never went to her coronation, or benched her for all of WC, or never interacted with her. You know those very clear signs of AT BEST disinterest (and at worst outright dislike) that Byleth can show Edelgard throughout the entire time the two of them know each other before she tries to literally murder them. So like why would she still WANT Byleth to ~walk with her~? Player pandering is one hell of a drug. Gimme Seteth and Flayn reunion any day

it's funny you mention this bc this is exactly what i did this run. i knew i wasn't gonna need her apart from a few battles where she's a mandatory unit so why invest in her. i hate her guts so why get her supports. i honestly was only tempted to get closer to her so i could go with her to enbarr and watch her crown herself and then say i'd kill her @ the holy tomb so i could feel max dramatic satisfaction but then i thought. nah. too much trouble. and didn't do it. so i really did ignore her and yet! bc this game for some reason REALLY wants byleth (and by extenstion us) to like edel/gard she shows up in the first ss cutscene where it makes no goddamn sense for her to be. 'my teacher' girl you don't know me and you cannot possibly feel anything for me, i never talked to you at all! i told you i would kill you to your face when you declared war and rhea asked me to! that was our literal last canon interaction! what i would have given for seteth and flayn in a cinematic not just bc i would have liked it more than seeing woobiegard but also bc it would have made more sense. this is the church route so put the church characters centre stage and put them in the emotional reunion cinematic i am begging
