@joukaiweek: Jounouchi’s Birthday!
(I have been dying to write about this for ages. Happy birthday hybrid!jou.)
“Would you like to do something for your birthday?”
The question caught Jounouchi so much by surprise that at first, he thought he’d misheard. His ears perked up in a somewhat comical fashion atop his head as he looked back at Kaiba.
“Say again?”
Kaiba looked up from his paper, mildly disgruntled. “Would. You. Like. To. Do. Something. For. Your. Birthday.” How Kaiba had managed to both perfectly emphasize each word in that flat, lazy drone, Jounouchi would never know. In any case, he responded by pouting back.
“That’s what I thought you said. But how do you even know when my birthday is?” And why would you want to go to the trouble of planning something for it, went unsaid.
Kaiba raised a brow. “It was in your file.”
Oh. Right. The room fell silent, Jounouchi unsure of what to say. After a moment, Kaiba sighed and set down his paper.
“If you don’t want to do anything—”
“It’s not that I don’t,” Jounouchi interrupted. “I just…haven’t really celebrated since I was a pup. Not sure what I would do.”
Kaiba considered this for a moment. “Then is there a gift you would like?”
Jounouchi tilted his head. “Why’re you so intent on askin’?”
“Why are you so intent on not giving me an answer?” Kaiba fired back, all irritated snark that almost made Jounouchi bristle. But he was learning that Kaiba’s bark was usually worse than his bite, so long as he was comfortable with a person.
Jounouchi thought he fell into that category. Probably.
“Just don’t see why you wanna bother,” Jounouchi admitted at last. “I haven’t even been here a year.”
“And yet you have helped me improve my work-life balance tremendously, given me several new and effective coping mechanisms, and overall proven yourself a more than adequate companion. I would have you stay indefinitely, considering. And I would like to do something to make you feel at home, if in nothing else but gratitude for your work.”
Well. Well, that was…Jounouchi isn’t sure what to say again, only this time there’s a mushy feeling in his chest stopping everything. To hear that his work is helping, so much that Kaiba wants him to stay…
“Shit. I’m…I’m touched.”
Kaiba’s deadpan, contemplative expression folded into a smile. “So?”
Jounouchi searched for something to say, some kind of hint to give Kaiba about what he wanted, but his mind was blank. What more could he want, when he had such a beautiful home already?
“I-I, um…the fireplace,” he eventually blurted. Kaiba gave him a puzzled look, but waited for him to clarify. “I like sitting by the fire, but the floor’s kinda hard. Maybe a blanket or something? To make it a little more comfy. I guess.”
Kaiba hummed in thought. “Or something,” he muttered. “Alright. Let me know if there’s anything else—otherwise I think I can manage something like that.”
Jounouchi’s heart gave a little leap, even as Kaiba’s abandoned his paper for his phone, looking something up. He only paused once, to tell Jounouchi to “shoo,” and then went back to it. Jounouchi chuckled, but obliged and left for his room. He didn’t want to ruin Kaiba’s surprise, after all.
And what a surprise it was. Two weeks later, Jounouchi entered the front hall to find an absolutely massive leather armchair situated in front of the fireplace. He let out a puppy-like yip of joy when Kaiba told him it was his, and he ran to leap into it. A fuzzy blanket met him as he jumped into the seat, also his, and so wonderfully soft.
Kaiba came over to him as he rolled about, and asked with a satisfied smirk, “I take it you like your gift?”
Jounouchi grinned up at him, hair askew, face flushed with joy. “This is the best birthday ever.”
“Good. Happy birthday, Jounouchi.”
That night, Jounouchi got to curl up in his new chair, cozy in his blanket with the fire roaring, feeling like he was actually, really home.
It really was the best birthday ever.

Y’all I keep thinking about the service dog au (I need a better name for this shit) and the fact that Kyle is diabetic and I touch in on his trauma from humancentipad, which probably would give him an aversion towards eating/drinking, which doesn’t mix well with the fact that he’s diabetic is so fucking funny to me💀

My favorite thing ever?
Nico has a service dog
Because after Mr. D diagnoses him with PTSD he feels kind of hopeless and overwhelmed (especially after her hears that it can’t be easily fixed with magic or anything)
So Mr D. Suggests that he get a service animal.
Nico argues that animals hate him because he ‘smells like death’. Mr. D Points out that Mrs O’Leary doesn’t hate him.
They both go talk to Hades who jumps at the excuse to win back his son by buying him more stuff.
The dog ends up being a hellhound mix (don’t ask how.)
The mix is mostly so she is a bit smaller for convenience (so she can fit in places.)
I'd assume she looks something like a Burmese mountain dog mix.
Her names Penelope (Penny) and Nico loves her.
Nico and Her spend a couple of months doing service dog training with Artemis and the hunters (dogs are one of her patron animals.)
the time he spends with them also gives him a bit of closure and helps him process what happened to his sister.
soon enough she's graduated their honorary service dog school and is fully trained.
She goes with Nico everywhere. Since she is half hellhound she can assist with shadow travel and make it easier for Nico. (To Wills relief)
She helps Nico with panic attacks and nightmares.
She grabs things for him (KitKats, sword, water, pillows.)
she can even open the fridge in the big house.
If Nico is having a really bad episode or a flashback he can’t come out of or if he’s in any physical danger, she knows to go get Will Chiron or MR D. In a heartbeat.
Again a shadow traveling dog being useful.
Will makes extra sure that everyone at camp is aware of how service animals work.
He teaches all the campers about what Penny's job is and why they’re not allowed to distract her.
On occasion when she isn't working she'll play fetch or get pets from some of the kids.
All Nicos freind's and family love her.
Like everyone wants to be a part of this dogs life, Nico has literally never been more popular.
Hazel buys her a sweater for the holidays.
Rachel helps Nico also dye part of her tail at one point (to keep her identifiable) and they give it a cool design.
Annabeth asks if she can make her a cool dog house.
Piper insists that they take her to the groomer and buys her little bandannas.
Percy helps Nico teach her how to swim.
She will also grabs medical supplies for Will sometimes.
Grover also knows how to talk to her and regularly lets her know how Nico is doing (not that she doesn't already know.)
Nico finds it easier to eat with Penelope.
It kind of forces him to eat on a schedule, since Penny has to be fed three times a day and the two of them can eat at the same time.
Nico also gives her little scraps off his plate sometimes which makes them both happy.
She gets absolutely spoiled.
At one point Nico gets worried that she might get hurt fighting a monster. Hades assured him she won’t but Leo makes her some extra cool dog armor just in case
She also has a little bag attached to her vest for carrying supplies on quests and long journeys. (list of things these bags might contain: Ambrosia, Dog treats, Water/kitkats, extra weapons, drachmas.)
Nico connects so well with this fucking dog.
Like he always struggled with people and he never really even considered being an animal person.
But he absolutely adores Penny.
He talks to her about things that worry him and just finds her presence so unbelievably comforting.
Will solace (who I think personally would become a vet sooner than a doctor) Has this dog on the best fucking diet you could imagine
you have never seen a more medically healthy dog.
And she ADORES Will
Partially because of how calmer Nico is with him, and partially because he keeps a treat jar in the infirmary now.
The best part! she cannot die (from old age at least) Immortal service dog!
Having a huge fluffy head is great for pressure therapy.
Nico (neurodivergent) likes the texture of her fur and stims by petting her or playing with her ears.

My dogs my beloved dogs!! The first line of beastial spirit vine soldiers from my LoK AU. Created by Baatar when during experimentation, he discovered the spirit energy after being condensed causes the vines to react strangely to machinery and processed material. Turning the inorganic to organic.
These soldiers are comprised of spirit vines that have mutated in reaction to the condensed activated spirit energy and adhered themselves to the suits. Similar to "mimics" in a way, they can conceal their mouths fully so they're indistinguishable from human soldiers, though very astute earthbenders may notice they neither breathe nor have a heartbeat.

sentences sunday monday
started a new wip >:) the idea of it is buck's nonverbal and then he and eddie become best friends and buck says eddie's name for the first time and eddie cries tears of joy 🥹 bobby also adopted buck when he was young bc the trashleys didn't want a kid who didn't talk
Eddie walks into the library, glancing around for Christopher’s favourite librarian, Bobby.
He spots him by the computers, sitting next to a young man with dark blond hair full of loose curls.
Eddie walks over, reading the list of books Chris told him he wants— no, according to his son, it's a need.
“Hi Eddie,” Bobby greets without being able to see him. He’s got this weird sixth sense and can notice if someone’s behind him. It freaks the hell out of Eddie but he tries to act cool. Key word: tries.
The older man turns around and notices Eddie’s alone. “Chris at another sleepover?”
“Yeah,” he sighs.
Bobby hums. “It’s always rough when your kid realizes he doesn’t have to be with his dad all the time,” he says as if he can relate.
Eddie didn’t think Bobby had any kids but it seems like he was wrong.

Professor Neil (sneak peek)
I missed the guy and WIP Wednesday this week brought him back up so here's a lil gift for @jtl-fics for being amazing and closing on a condo today!!
(Snippet includes part of the WIP Wednesday piece in the beginning)
September 16, 2008 (Tuesday)
Tuesday was probably Neil’s favorite day of the week. He only had two classes in the morning and both were lectures that he didn’t mind sitting in. After his lectures, he always went to the small coffee shop that didn’t even serve good coffee, but it was cheap and it was routine. Routines helped and kept him focused. Besides, the coffee shop was the only one that hadn’t tried to demand proof of papers for his service dog. One would think that the prosthetic leg would be proof enough but Neil clearly overestimated the mental capacity of most people.
Armed with subpar coffee and a warm bagel, Neil made his way to the library. The main floor was a communal hub, with no volume limits and plenty of chairs and couches for people to sit on. Tucked on the left side was an open room full of tables, the tutoring center. The woman behind the desk smiled as Neil walked up and wrote down his arrival in a notebook. Neil liked tutoring oddly enough, he didn’t care much for the people, but he enjoyed the subjects and the feeling of someone understanding a difficult concept was hard to beat.
A good chunk of the people who frequented the tutoring center were those who were on big time scholarships and unwilling to risk a dropping a point in the GPA. Hyped up on coffee, Neil often had to fight them away from his preferred table. The largest portion however, were the athletes. All required to maintain a minimum of a 2.3 to play for the NCAA Division 1 league. Neil tutored football players, soccer stars, and dancers every day. For most, as long as they went to their classes and didn’t fail any exams, it was an easy gig. Five hours a week in the tutoring center was a easy gig.
The Exy team was no exception.
Neil had started tutoring Matt Boyd last year, the tall man hopeless with his French courses. His pronunciation was leaps and bounds better, and the backliner was steadily maintaining a passing grade in the class. Languages were difficult for athletes who traveled almost weekly for games.
Thankfully, there was no one at the table Neil had claimed as his own. Despite the years of therapy he still took a table in the back of the room. There were other reasons, which his therapist had been good to point out, the fact that being further back in the room kept his dog focused on the task. Babe Ruth was a large golden retriever who seemed to forget that he had an additional appendage attached to his rump. The dogs tail was a weapon, thumbing hard enough against a leg to leave bruises. It was a disappointing scenario, considering Babe Ruth walk to the right side of Neil—tail smacking against his good leg. At the table, Neil took care to sit with his back to the side wall rather than the back. It was the little things, his reminded himself mentally. By now, his voice in the tutoring center was easily ignored as he commanded Babe Ruth to lay at his feet. The dog wasted no time, flopping onto the hard carpet and splaying out his limbs.
Neil checked his watch, Matt would be arriving in a few minutes. He always came right after his French class. Neil had managed to arrive a little early, so he went ahead and pulled out the workbook and folder that they’ve been using over the semester. This was their fourth meeting and already Neil liked how they were able to review the French that had just been covered in Matt’s class. He made a mental reminder to email his thanks to the French Professor, she’d been helpful in sending Neil her presentations for the classes.

@joukaiweek prompt: chosen
(You know what always cheers me up? Service dog au.)
“Wow. Swanky.”
Jounouchi turned in place, admiring the fancy furniture and delicate stonework—or tile? Was there a difference?—in the front hall of Kaiba’s mansion. His nose twitched, taking in all the different smells; lemony cleaning agents, powdery air fresheners, the jumbled smells of various humans that wandered about the place. Not just the Kaiba brothers, but an abundance of servants and bodyguards and the like.
And now, Jounouchi. This was his home now, too. After all, he’d signed the contract—he was Kaiba’s live-in service dog, now.
He hadn’t believed it, at first. The guy had seemed uptight during their interview, hadn’t even wanted to be there and freely admitted it—apparently his younger brother had insisted he at least look into some help for his condition.
Despite his attitude, Kaiba had at least treated Jounouchi like a potential employee and not just a 178cm mutt. It was nice. Still, he wasn’t expecting anything to come of it.
His supervisor’s sudden congratulations came as a pretty big surprise.
Now, he was here. Living under the roof of one of the richest men in Japan, and arguably the most influential. It was a sweet deal. He had no idea how he’d landed it, but like hell he was gonna fuck it up.
“Are you quite finished gawking?” Kaiba’s cheerless voice cut through Jounouchi’s musings, and he turned to look at his new client, ears perked. If he tuned in on Kaiba’s pulse, he could hear the slightly off-beat th-thump, th-thump, th-thump. Same as it’d been during the interview. Jounouchi marked it as a current baseline, but he couldn’t reasonably call it relaxed. He wasn’t sure the guy ever did.
No wonder he needed a service dog.
Jounouchi flashed him a grin. “Just admiring my new digs! It’s real nice. Lots of space.”
“There’s a garden in the back, as well, if you’d like a walk in the mornings,” Kaiba said. Jounouchi tilted his head, curious.
“Do you take walks a lot?”
“Not as such. Not recently.” Kaiba turned his head away, mouth pinched. Jounouchi’s tail gave a curious wag.
“No? Sounds like you used to. Something change?”
Th-THUMP.
Oh. That was interesting.
“Work changes everything. There’s always something to be done. People to speak to. I have time for little else.”
Ahh. The picture was becoming clearer. “The life of a CEO, eh?” Jounouchi painted an easy grin on his face, tail wagging. Kaiba side-eyed him. His heartbeat returned to its erratic baseline.
“Yes. However, I did make time this afternoon to see to you. If you’re ready, I can show you to your room.”
Jounouchi’s ears perked up again. His own room? In this fancy place? But, no. He needed to spend a little more time with Kaiba first. He needed to see what made this man tick.
“Kinda curious about that garden, actually,” he said. “Got a little time to take me for a stroll?”
His tail wagged expectantly while he waited for Kaiba’s reply. The man looked exasperated, but his heartbeat remained the same, and he didn’t object. Merely turned around with a sigh, beckoning Jounouchi to the back door.
“Very well. A short walk through the garden, then.”
Jounouchi’s tail picked up speed as he jogged over to keep pace with Kaiba. He kept his ears perked and nose alert for the slightest change, ready to learn all he could about his person.
Don’t you worry, Kaiba. I’m gonna make sure you never regret picking me. That’s a promise.
