Hi! I was gone for two years but now I’m back because I wanted to share this with someone and this site was the only place I could think where people would be excited! I’ve been watching for years on Pinterest. Anyways. This book is incredible. It is 8 officially published fanfictions from 1976. Seven of the stories have introductions from various TOS actors. It’s incredible reading it and having their words be just as relevant half a century later. DeForest Kelley’s introduction especially. The stories range from humorous barfights to serious philosophical questions. The seventh story, “The Winged Dreamers,” is even a Spirk fanfiction. I think. It’s actually pretty similar to “Shore Leave,” where there is a planet that can show people’s wildest dreams. Towards the end, Spock gets “infected” and starts talking about running away with Kirk. It’s adorable. Just to reiterate, this is officially published fanfiction. There’s at least two of these books, with many other similar ones. There’s also the first story, where Spock is split into his human and Vulcan halves (a la “The Enemy Within”). He admits his love for Kirk in a very roundabout, avoiding-the-censors, type of way, but he still does. That’s just an amazing story in general though.

I just finished reading an amazing book and I have to yell about it to somebody, so I'm gonna yell about it here.
It's called She Gets the Girl by Rachael Lippincott and Alyson Derrick, and it's about two college freshman girls who want college to be the beginning of a new life for themselves. For Alex, that means proving to her girlfriend that she's not a selfish flirt who can't take anything seriously. For Molly, that means learning how to make friends and maybe even confess to the girl she's had a crush on for years.
When the two of them meet, they think they couldn't be more different from each other, and at first it seems like they'll just go their separate ways. But then Alex realizes that this is the perfect opportunity to prove to her girlfriend Natalie that she can be around attractive girls and not flirt with them, by helping Molly catch the attention of Cora, her crush. So Alex mentors Molly through how to get the girl, and it's just as the plan succeeds that they both realize- what they really want is each other.
I bought this on a whim at Walmart when I didn't really have $13 to spare on a book but wow was it worth it. All of the characters are so well written and they feel so real. I love that the main cast is entirely women, with the most prominent male role being Molly's brother. And they're all unique, with traits and interests and flaws that make it impossible to mistake them for each other.
The subplots were super well handled, too. Alex has to deal with her alcoholic single mother. Molly has to balance her close relationship with her mother with becoming more independent. Despite the high potential for these things to feel cliched and overdone, I never thought that. Molly also has a (admittedly small) subplot about being half-Korean and how that comes up in her relationship with her mom.
I read this in basically one sitting, and I didn't even feel the time pass while reading. It's funny, surprising, heart-wrenching, groan-inducing, and tooth-rottingly sweet in turn, and never is it anything less than completely sincere. I got so much second-hand embarrassment from Molly, but I cheered her on as she faced her anxiety head-on. I rooted for Alex as she learned to trust and lean on people more. There were definitely several moments when I thought "c'mon you two, just kiss already!" But in the end the way the story played out was perfect, and the pacing was excellent.
Overall, I'd rate it a 10/10. I would absolutely love seeing this as a movie, too, with how cinematic it felt at times. It's a fairly easy, quick read, and I really cannot recommend it enough for someone looking for a happy ending lesbian romance. (I personally wouldn't call it a rom-com, but I could see how someone else would).
TL;DR: She Gets the Girl is a sweet and funny lesbian romance where confident, flirty Alex trains shy Molly in flirting 101 so Molly can catch her dream girl and neither of them realize it's inevitable that they're going to fall for each other instead, 10/10.

Been brainrotting lately and now I present to you what I think is an underused story beat for Yuu. What if “Yuu” isn’t even the prefect’s real name?
Considering that Yuu’s first experience in Twisted Wonderland is waking up in a coffin, wandering around an obviously foreign place, and being questioned by a suspicious man in a crow mask surrounded by people in black hooded robes… I just think most people would not give their real name in such a sketchy situation.
Fast forward to when Yuu is more comfortable with the cast and there is both comedy and angst potential here. On one hand, the reactions to the deception could be pretty funny. (Cue a “woe is me” from Crowley. Of course he can’t find a way home for you when he doesn’t have your real name!) On the other, this could be a great way of exploring the prefect having a crisis. Yuu already lost so much in being taken to Twisted Wonderland, and now in a way even the prefect’s name has been taken.
What do you think?
waking up in a coffin, wandering around an obviously foreign place, and being questioned by a suspicious man in a crow mask surrounded by people in black hooded robes…
Annon, annon, annon, when you put it like that it sounds like Yuu woke up in the middle of a cult ritual of some sort. Which I suppose if you were an edgy Night Raven student idia you might argue that the enrollment ceremony totally is as an excuse not to go
But to be more serious, I have seen a few memes about this concept and I like it a lot σ( ̄、 ̄=) It's a fun character concept, it's not everyday you get a chance to re-invent yourself completely.
That being said, just based off of the few dialogue options Yuu has at the start, I think Yuu is implied to believe that they are dreaming:
Tumblr media
Which honestly doesn't make this idea any less valid. If you're dreaming about waking up in the middle of some weird necromancer's rite, why not give him a fake name? It's not meant to be serious anyway. Just go with the flow and hope things don't get too weird (and get offended when your dream doesn't give you magic powers) until it's too late and you realize everyone thinks your name really is that bad joke you made.
If you want to get darker, maybe Yuu really did think they died. A black carriage pulling a coffin really only goes to a funeral, and death has been depicted as an unmanned coach with black horses. Maybe Yuu is only just coming to grips with the fact that they really are alive when they see Riddle overblot and he hurts them. Maybe they now are sitting next to two people who have started to think about them as a friend, a really close one. Maybe they think Yuu is really brave because they charged headlong into danger without a second thought, and won, twice now. Maybe Yuu cries themselves to sleep that night because in a way... you died so yuu could live.
As for reactions, Crowley and the other staff members I think would be the most dramatic, followed by Adeuce and Grim. Jack I can see accepting your reasons and not thinking too hard about it, maybe even respecting your survival instincts, while Epel... well he says he's mad but mostly he's just concerned. He knows what it feels like to have two dueling parts of yourself and trying to find the middle ground. Ortho would be excited, you have a secret identity just like a magical girl/super sentai/anime idol/superhero take your pick really. He certainly doesn't mind getting to know you all over again.
Sebek screams at you for being a threat to Wakasama but it's clear to everyone who actually knows him that he's really just worried about the amount of stress you put on yourself. He would hate for you to have the same issues with self loathing he does. And Malleus? Well he lied to you about who he was because he was worried you would be afraid, even though you didn't know he existed. It would be very petty for him to hold a grudge against you for doing the same.
In general I think this would be something the others would have an easier time understanding as opposed to Yuu's sense of alienation or loneliness at not having magic. Identity issues are common themes in fiction, so I could see them actually seeing it as a problem as opposed to an abstract problem like no government papers (since these kids with one obvious exception don't do taxes.) But it would make for a great way to explore the prefect having a crisis just as you say, in a way it's the perfect example for every problem they might have with being in Twisted Wonderland.

HELLO
Do you like GAY JEWISH THINGS? Are you a BIG LEFTIST who likes WORKER STRUGGLES and also JEWISH THINGS? Do you want the self-revelations of a gender-indifferent angel to make you fucking sob in your kitchen?
If so, you need to read this book like FUCKING IMMEDIATELY.
Spoilers behind the cut, because I literally just sat and transcribed the part from the audiobook that made me sit down at my kitchen table and ugly cry for like five solid minutes. It was like being punched directly in the solar plexus in the best of all ways. FUCK! It's SO FUCKING GOOD.
One of the main characters is an angel who leaves, in the company of its partner, a demon called Little Ash, the shtetl in which it has been sitting in a room, studying Talmud so intently with its companion, a demon, that the two of them literally did not notice when a synagogue was built around where they sat and studied. It ends up becoming more and more human over the course of the book due to Events, and at one point finds himself in a union meeting to decide on whether the garment workers should protest over their working conditions. The angel is being called Uriel at this point because this is what is on its falsified immigration papers. A young woman is reading a list of people who have been injured, gotten sick, or been killed because of the working conditions. And then this:
The girl's voice rose and fell like a cantor's, and Uriel listened as to a voice from heaven, drinking in every word of the Yiddish that was starting to feel as familiar to it as a mother tongue. The words filled it up, and soaked into its heart, and it thought to itself, all of this time, I had been missing something, and I had no idea. Its heart was heavier with the weight of the young worker's words, but should a heart not be heavy in a world full of injustice? It looked down at its lap, twisting its tzitzis in its fingers. This was the world Essie lived in, and her family, and all of the people back in Shtetl, and it had never noticed. How many times had it said "Listen, Israel!" and not been listening? Oh, it thought, I have been terrible. Terrible. Uriel Fetterman needs to be someone who sees what is happening in the world around it. I must stay this way, this person, so that I won't forget. This is why Torah was not for angels. Angels forget what humans can remember. Angels skip lightly over ground that needs plowing with rough hands and sharp blades. Uriel had thought that it could not be doing wrong because it had no inclination for evil. But what had it been doing for hundreds of years? Studying, and forgetting that studying should lead to action. It would never have left Shtetl without Little Ash, would never have known it was missing anything. But it had missed the most important purpose it could ever have, something bigger than an angel could ever be.

The Fabius Bile books were made for me.
Sure the body horror I can take or leave but watching Chaos Marines bicker and fight for most of each book, a weird planet in the warp that has "the criminal bazaar, welcome to all factions", all of the Eldar stuff but especially watching Harlequins being absolutely terrifying or wraithbone being cosmic horror personified, the special guest appearance of Trazyn the Infinite, fun explorations of the Primarchs and where they went wrong without the story being all about them, and of course Druhkari infighting onboard their ship with a blown out A/C that's held together with the eldar equivalent of duct tape while they're still acting like the rulers of the universe.
This series just gets me

On a slightly more serious note, I just wanna post this before the final entry, not counting the epilogue. I’m so, so thankful for Dracula Daily. It’s been an absolute blast beginning to end, reading discourse, seeing the jokes and memes and all the art, reading theories and reactions. And getting to be apart of that! Reading this book again in this format was a hell of an experience but the fact that I didn’t do it alone, I don’t know. We’ve all gotten to experience this book in a new way in real time together. I love that. And I hope that it won’t be just a one-off event, either. And even if it is? But this? It’s been wonderful. So, thank you to everyone for collectively going nuts over a 130 year old novel. Thank you for posting and making those artworks and memes and analyses. Reminds you you’re human and not stuck and alone.

Just finished reading The Many Hands and you guys it's an absolute banger 10/10. I gave up taking down quotes I liked because I was doing it basically every other page, but here are my favorites of the ones I got:
Tumblr media
[Image ID: 'He's the Doctor,' Martha said. She smiled sweetly, as her mother had told her to when dealing with idiots. 'I'm Martha Jones.' ./End ID]
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Then he stopped. All good things come to an end. He lay on his back for just a moment, enjoying the feel of the hard cobbles against his back, admiring the dramatic beauty of the monochrome clouds directly above. Gradually the sound of the crowd filtered into his perception, and he made a rough estimate of how long it would take before one of them rushed over and asked if he was all right. He ought to save them the bother and leap to his feet, but just for the moment his body seemed to want a nice lie-down. ./End ID]
Totally normal reaction to being thrown violently off a runaway stagecoach.

read some posts abt the new pjo book which ofc got me thinking abt smth completely different ahshdjdj
say what u want abt uncle rick but he’s never written the same romance twice. like think abt it:
slow burn rivals to friends to lovers who kinda go crazy when the other is taken / goes missing and it develops to the point where the boy would rather fall into the deepest pit of hell (and do quests to ask gods for rec letters for college) than be without her (iconic, showstopping, never the same, absolutely one of a kind)
guy falls in love with girl only to find out he fell in love with an enchanted pottery version of her, which promptly is destroyed. upon finding the real her, she hates him before she begrudgingly begins to like him and then they get tgt at the end of the series.
girl likes guy, except due to his bloodline he’s cursed to die within a few months but she kinda wants to be tgt anyways. but wait! at the same time she also has a crush on this 4000 year old egyptian god bc his human form is cute (a form only she can see btw). she’s torn between them until in the last book they merge into one person??? and she starts dating him/them/idek???
amnesiac boy wakes up on a bus next to his girlfriend, only to find out later that a goddess implanted memories of them dating into both of their heads and they actually don’t know each other at all. over the course of a quest they develop some real feelings and decide to keep their relationship going. i think they break up later but i stopped reading the books before then so
boy and genderfluid person meet in the afterlife and trade snarky banter until eventually he accidentally confesses by using the power of his crush to shrink a god to the size of a perfume bottle
boy develops crush on girl who everyone else is wary of / doesn’t like bc she is the daughter of the god of the underworld. eventually he finds out that she died like 80 years ago and her brother brought her back to life bc the god of death was chained but he accepts her past and likes her no matter what.
boy is magically transported to the cursed island of a millennia old titaness who was promised freedom and is bitter that she never received it (although it’s theorized that she was granted it but all the gods forgot to tell her) and while he’s trying to get off the island they fall in love and he gets back to her by faking his death and using a magic compass to get him back to the island and gets her off of it. i think they also break up at one point but i again i stopped reading the books by then so
sunshine healer boy encounters emo death boy being all emo and pushing people away and goes fuck that and gets close to him and all the while the emo boy is like “a person likes me ??? for who i am??? sounds fake” and then they eventually start dating

The Many Illustrators of A Tale of Two Cities 4: Curtiss Sprague
Tumblr media
...& a guest book editor...
This week's is a special one. We'll dive right into this 1930 edition by first admiring all the silhouette art of its illustrator, Curtiss Sprague - but see if you notice something extra along the way:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And to highlight the last one for its marvelous misquote:
Tumblr media
Alright, have you noticed it? There's more than just ink coloring some of these pages!
Yes, this week we're not just taking a look at this 1930 edition - we are taking a look at this particular copy of this 1930 edition, which features not just Sprague's beautiful work...
Tumblr media
...but also the work of William*, a high school sophomore 92 years ago who clearly learned the lesson from my last post! *although perhaps not clearly enough because I personally can't tell for certain what his surname is by his signature😅
Tumblr media
Besides his coloring in Sprague's silhouettes, there isn't a lot more of his work written throughout the book - he did make sure to take plenty of notes in the blank pages, though!
Tumblr media
There is also this brief note (please comment if you can make out the word above the date!):
Tumblr media
As well as this subtle substitution (whoever C.E.S. is...oof!):
Tumblr media
William's work made searching through and scanning this particular book an absolute delight - it was a grounding and beautiful reminder that students have been idly writing in their schoolbooks for as long as school has existed.
Tumblr media
Thank you, William!
& the standard endnote for all posts in this series:
This post is intended to act as the start of a forum on the given illustrator, so if anyone has anything to add - requests to see certain drawings in higher definition (since Tumblr compresses images), corrections to factual errors, sources for better-quality versions of the illustrations, further reading, fun facts, any questions, or just general commentary - simply do so on this post, be it in a comment/tags or the replies!💫
