Fire and Drought
Drought left the forest vulnerable to fire.
Tumblr media
Still-living trees rise up from soot-black roots, a testament to the fire-resistant bark of the redwoods.

The silhouettes of former redwoods stand among those that still live, and the forest is made more beautiful by their company.

coastal redwoods of northeastern california on left, compared to giant sequoias of central california on right. husband @tayohshadowind got some time off work so we finally got to knock visiting the tallest trees in the world off my bucket list :)
while the sequoias are technically wider and larger by volume, the redwoods are taller and still massively thick compared to other trees. personally i vastly preferred the redwood forest over the sequoias- the forest was denser, easier to hike through, less crowded, and the thicker canopy and lack of fences gave it a much more natural and magical feel, whereas the sequoia park was crowded and very commercialized, making it feel like a zoo rather than a forest.

Excerpt from this story from CNN:
A growing wildfire that threatens a famed giant sequoia tree grove in California's Yosemite National Park has doubled in size over the past day and pushed officials to issue evacuation orders for a nearby community.
The Washburn Fire began July 7 and has swelled to 1,591 acres as of Sunday morning as it burns near the lower portion of Mariposa Grove, park officials said. A total of 360 fire personnel are working to contain the fire from the ground and air, and park officials said the grove will remain closed until further notice."
The fire is burning in difficult terrain with continuous heavy fuels in and around the fire," fire officials said on InciWeb, a site for coordinating fire response. "Significant tree mortality from 2013-2015 has left significant dead standing and dead fallen fuels. This also presents significant safety hazards to firefighters."
Weather is forecast to get hotter through the week. However, fire scars from past fires about 1 to 3 miles from the Washburn Fire perimeter will help in slowing it, officials said.
Amid the fire's expansion, park officials urged people in Yosemite's Wawona campground and community to evacuate.
Mariposa Grove is home to more than 500 giant sequoia trees, which can grow to over 250 feet tall. And while the grove was founded in 1857, the trees existed long before that, with some believed to be more than 2,000 years old.

Mousey on a Walk
We took Munin and Mousey for a walk in Sequoia national forest where the giant redwoods are in California. Mousey rested in his belt pouch the whole time, with his nose peeking out to smell everything. I will be posting a lot of pictures from the walk soon!

Pier by Northerly Island and Other Poems
By Arsh Siddiqui Pier by Northerly Island The lucky ones could see it clearly long ago A viridian grass carpets the murky lake bottom Leafy and bushy vines stretch to the surface A foggy blue glass seals all below from the lake breeze Debris lines the rim and top of the glass Flecks of white and thin brown sticks rest above The further you look the more the glass hides the green It shimmers and…
