Not going to tag a very icky post that I found but it’s not hard to find. So, here’s your reminder that;
Self suspecting and self diagnosed autistic people are NOT taking resources from diagnosed people. You can’t get autism services without a diagnosis, you can’t go to any therapies really without a diagnosis and so on.
Autism accessories have a abundance supply. So yeah, get those ear defenders, get those sunglasses, get those stim toys.
You aren’t taking anything from diagnosed people.
Stop saying self diagnosed people are taking away from diagnosed people, because they’re not. They have their space in the community. The community is big enough for them.

one of my least favorite neurotypical customs is how long it takes to leave somewhere. My mom will be like “alright it’s time to leave” but we stay like 10 more minutes because people can’t stop talking. We get two feet before stopping again. We stand in the doorway for 5 minutes. It’s annoying and stressful and puts my brain in constant waiting mood.

autistic culture is when the only two options in life is to mask and conform to everyone's bullshit while hating yourself because you're not you, or unmasking and being yourself but everyone hates you for being you. Plot twist you're miserable both ways because it's very tiring and being hated isn't fun.

A couple years ago everyone called me:
Quiet
Shy
Gifted
Mature
Independent
Sensitive
"A pleasure to have in class"
All those labels did was other me. I felt so alone & I never had a word to describe how I felt.
You can claim that "autism is a trend" or that I'm "just an attention seeker" but now I have a community of people who're just like me.

Unfriendly reminder that professional diagnoses are privileges that many people simply do not have access to/are not able to afford.
Being against self diagnosing is being ableist and classist, simple as that.

Hi, i know this question seems long tired and dead but i wanted to ask.
What are your thoughts on self diagnosing autism? I saw this gatekeep-y post from a certain user saying that self diagnosing autism is wrong.
I'll send a link with the post in another ask.
Hey anon! I’m pro-informed self diagnose. That means if someone’s informed, knows the DSM5 criteria and meets it, and just overall is informed about autism, then I’m ok with it!
I believe people should be researching any disorder before they try and self diagnose so I think it’s reasonable!
Hope this answers your question. Please do send me the post if possible. Have a lovely day!

me thinking "oh im not neurodivergent shut the fuck up abelist me" but then i remember how when i was like 7 i hated the train whistle cause it was too loud, i hated explosions on this kids tv show about trains cause scary, i always went to sleep with the same random ass music playing to calm me down, i was addicted to lego, i was addicted to drawing these massive "secret laboratory" style pictures on the massive pieces of paper my grandparents got from the fish shop and did it for yearssssssss, i was always the kid who was like three years ahead of everyone else in maths and reading, i got really annoyed when i had a runny nose cause i didnt know how to blow my nose and NOT sniff and i was like "im doing the best i can," i HATE HATE HATED crossing my legs cause it felt weird, etc etc etc include 15 years of neurodivergent experiences
how did i not get diagnosed? i have no idea

Self-diagnosed npd culture is "probably I'm faking it to feel special" *proceeds to spend half an hour adoring their own body while looking in the mirror, falling in love with their own reflection like fucking Narcissus*.

As an autistic person, figuring out I'm trans was like figuring out I'd been cosplaying as a gender-bent version of myself...for 28 years.

Friendly reminder that professional diagnosis is still extremely hard for some people to get so they HAVE to self diagnose.
A lot of these people would probably love to have a real diagnosis so they don't have to feel like their struggles are invalid.
Neurodivergent research is based on little white boys. A lot of people AREN'T cishet white boys though. Plenty of non AMAB & POC are misdiagnosed. Black people are way more likely to be diagnosed with a mood disorder or something to frame them as "aggressive" and a "threat".
A diagnosis (especially without insurance) is extremely expensive.
Stop assuming every self diagnosed person is doing it for clout or because it's trendy. Most self diagnosed have done months to even years worth of research before they even think about labeling themself as neurodivergent. (On a side note, people STILL face discrimination after being diagnosed so it may be a matter of their own safety)

Reminder for this Autism Awareness Month that informed and educated self diagnoses are valid.
And if you invalidate autistic people who are self diagnosed you owe me your femurs for my dog's gnawing pleasure.

sometimes i think maybe MH self diagnosis isn't that deep. and i don't mean that as in it doesn't matter or isn't significant. i mean psychiatric diagnoses are heavily biased towards ableism and disorder labels are really just a collection of experiences. it's not like they're diseases with a defined pathology. the causes and origins of the experiences are different for everyone.
so. if you've learned you share a lot of experiences with people with a certain diagnosis, and the resources and support given to people with that label help you... go ahead and use whatever language you want to describe your experiences. cause that's really all it is at the end of the day. even for professionally diagnosed people, their dx might not fit them 100%. so. who's to say it has to for you, too.
you don't even have to self diagnose yourself with something definitive. you can use symptom labels. you can just be neurodivergent or mentally ill and not specify further. whatever helps. it's your life, your brain. as long as you're not hurting yourself or anyone else, you're fine. and if you realize the words you're using didn't fit as well as you thought.. oh well. try again. understanding yourself is trial and error. it's nbd.
what matters is that you're supported and doing better. that's all.
