Signal now allows users to create a username to give out instead of a phone number. There's really no reason to not use Signal-- insist your friends, family, coworkers, as many as possible switch to it. You can have encrypted group chats, set disappearing message time lengths, disable screen shots and even use a google number so you're not actually using/displaying your own phone number. Now you don't have to give out your number at all to anyone. "Rather than directly storing your username as part of your account details, Signal stores a cryptographic hash of your username instead; Signal uses the Ristretto 25519 hashing algorithm, essentially storing a random block of data instead of usernames themselves. This is like how online services can confirm a user’s password is valid without storing a copy of the actual password itself." .. "You can also create a link or QR code that people can scan to add you as a contact. These, too, are ephemeral. You can send someone your Signal link in an insecure channel, and, as soon as they contact you, you can reset your link and get a new one, without needing to change your username.
Finally, while you’ll still need a phone number to create a Signal account, you’ll have the option to prevent anyone from finding you on Signal using your phone number."

If you’re a leftist trying to do stuff, knock it off with the fucking “in minecraft” type jokes, and I beg of you please stop discussing stuff on the most blatantly surveilled channels. If you’re doing anything effective even if it’s technically legal, cover your ass

When we talk about security culture, people tend to have one of two kinds of experiences. The first is of building walls and keeping people out, the second is of being excluded or mistrusted. Both of these come with negative feelings – fear and suspicion for the former and alienation and resentment for the latter. I would say that they are two sides of the same coin, two experiences of a security culture that isn’t working well.
I want to be welcoming and open to new people in my organizing. I also want to protect myself as best I can from efforts to disrupt that organizing, especially from the State but also from bosses or the far-Right. That means I want to have the kinds of security practices that allow me to be open while knowing that I’ve assessed the risk I face and am taking smart steps to minimize it. Security culture should make openness more possible, not less.
[...]
Repression functions by isolating people. I don’t want to contribute to isolation through the things I do to keep myself and my friends safe. I want a security culture rooted in deepening our connection with each other. When we don’t transform isolation, organizing can feel no different than work and we don’t build the kinds of relationships that truly transform us, such that we can begin to feel the world we wish to create.
I don’t want to feel suspicion when I meet people, that’s toxic and erodes the spaces of struggle we create. Rather than feel suspicious of someone, I want to ask myself “what would it take for me to trust this person?” I want to go towards people and try to transform suspicion into trust.
[...]
[...] Rather than saying, “this person is a cop trying to entrap me”, we can reframe and say, “I need to clarify my understanding of security culture with this person if we are going to work together”. [...]
(A less recognized form of bad security culture is how callouts around security culture can reinforce negative power dynamics. We should absolutely talk to each other about interactions we have security concerns about, but this should always be mutual and done privately when possible – describe what you heard, present your idea of security culture, ask if they think that’s a reasonable boundary, be willing to hear them disagree. The goal is to build shared understandings to widen the range of organizing we can engage in together, not shut people down or make them feel ashamed (or to make ourselves seem more hardcore). An extreme form of this is snitch-jacketing, where people are falsely called a snitch, which can have huge consequences in peoples lives and were a part of eroding revolutionary movements in the 70’s, but a smaller example could be a more ‘experienced’ person shutting down others in front of a group for talking about actions they found inspiring or for who they are talking to.)

This needs to be read by everyone in the US affected by the overturning of Roe vs Wade. People outwith the US should probably read it to.
It covers the avenues of tracking the government can go do in their pursuit of people exercising their bodily autonomy.
Some will say it is scaremongering or conspiracy theory but it isn't.

I really hate how normalized surveillance is, especially in academia as a student right now. I’m taking classes online until next fall, and several courses have required a specific extension to monitor me while I take quizzes and exams.
What does this extension do, exactly? Well!
It accesses your camera and microphone
It takes a photo of your face to know if you’ve left the camera view
It takes a photo of YOUR ID to “prove your identity” which is. I shouldn’t have to explain why that’s messed up. It gives a little oh don’t use gov or military id but like you’re asking for this
It records your screen and sends it to the teacher when you submit; if it senses a violation, it can patch in a live proctor to see if you’re cheating
before you start it shows rules set by your teacher, which may include “no hats” and “no bathroom breaks.” on a 1 to 2 hour test.
My high school used a different program to monitor every laptop in the school on their WiFi, and a teacher could look at your screen at any point. It also watches what you do at home ever since lockdown and virtual schooling started.
The self-checkout shows you a screen with you on it, reminding you not to shoplift. A sign outside reads “Smile! You’re on camera!” as you walk downtown. Cameras on porches. Cameras on streets. Cameras in stores.
Everywhere, cameras. Everywhere, you’re being watched.
I want to grab people by the shoulders and scream, “Isn’t this upsetting?! Does this not quietly horrify you?! Do you even remember what privacy means?!”
Because I do! I know how this started, with prisoners watched like prey and companies selling security at the cost of your anonymity. “Look!” they said. “Now you can see your neighbor’s kid learning to drive! Now you can see the teens who walk by on their way to the bus stop! Now you can see everything, everyone, all the time! And everyone can see you!”
(And don’t get me started on how enormously screwed up prisons are, I’ll start chewing drywall.)
You know what one of the most pervasive anxieties I have is? That I’m being watched, judged, picked apart by a million people in a thousand tiny ways that I’ll never see. It’s creepy! It’s so disturbing! And it’s just… daily life now. We’ve been desensitized.
Smile for the camera. There’s probably one somewhere, you know.

What Is Security Culture?
I believe a Security Culture refers to the collective beliefs, attitudes, values, and behavior within an organization that influence how security is perceived and practiced. It encompasses the awareness of security risks, the importance placed on security measures, and the extent to which security practices are integrated into daily operations.
In a strong security culture, employees are not only aware of security threats but also actively engage in practices that safeguard sensitive information, systems, and assets. This may include following security protocols, reporting potential threats, and viewing security as a shared responsibility.
I believe a robust security culture is vital in today's threat landscape, where cyber threats are constantly evolving. It's help organizations mitigate risks, protect their reputation, and ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of their data and systems. I believe cultivating a security culture involves continuous education, communication, awareness, and fostering a sense of shared responsibility among all members of an organization.

i was worried i was going to hate how worf and jadzia got together what with jadzia constantly being the object of desire, in a traditional read of the word, of so many male characters that it was reaching parody by the end of season 2, but the actual story they wrote? grade-a, rom-com, cute. screwball adorable. especially this exact moment early in the episode:

Kali growling to herself silently as she watches a few too many Menagerians flirt with an oblivious Yang.
Kali: Yang, Dear! Can you come here please?
Yang: Yes, ma'am! Is something wrong?
Kali: Oh, no, nothing like that, dear. *glares the other faunus away* And please, call me Kali. I just wanted to spend a little time with my daughter's girlfriend; get to know you better. We weren't able to talk much back in Haven, and all I have to go off is what Blake's told me.
Yang: O-oh! Yeah! Sure! Um...what do you want to know?
Kali: *threads her arm through Yang's and leads her to the group's shared quarters* There's actually something I'd rather do. Think of it as a way to welcome you into our family. It's an important piece of our culture, and I'm sure Blake would be thrilled if you would participate.
Yang: Absolutely! I'd love to learn more about your culture! Anything to make Blake happy!
Kali: That's the spirit.
Later that Afternoon
Blake: Has anyone seen Yang? I haven't heard from her all afternoon.
Weiss: I thought she was with you. I haven't seen her.
Ruby: Yeah, you guys have been velcroed together since the Ever After. I just assumed she was with you.
Yang: *walks into the room* Hey, guys! What'd I miss?
Blake: Yang, where have you been? I was starting to wo- *notices golden stud in Yang's ear and starts blushing* ....Yang...what is that?
Yang: Oh! Your mom invited me to some kind of bonding - welcoming - family acceptance thing earlier. She said it was part of the Menagerian culture and that you'd be excited if I did it.
Blake: I-is that right? Excuse me for a moment.
Ruby, Weiss, and Yang watch as Blake nearly stomps out of the room.
Ruby: What was that about?
Weiss: I have no idea.
Blake: *from another room* What the heck is this all about?!
Kali: Well, I didn't see you making a move, so I decided to help. You should have seen the amount of faunus flirting with her! I had to secure your assets!
Blake: I CAN PROPOSE TO YANG BY MYSELF, MOM!!!
Ruby and Weiss: PROPOSE?!?!?!
Yang: *brain promptly explodes*
