Romantic obsession is my first language. I live in a world of fantasies, infatuations and love poems. Sometimes I wonder if the yearning I’ve felt for others was more of a yearning for yearning itself. I’ve pined insatiably and repeatedly: for strangers, new lovers, unrequited flames. While the subjects changed, that feeling always remained. Perhaps, then, I have not been so infatuated with the people themselves, but with the act of longing.

I take off my hands and give them to you, but you don't
want them, so I take them back
and put them on the wrong way, the wrong wrists.

excerpts from "seaside improvisation" - richard siken
Tumblr media
His hands are screwed on backward, and there’s a stone in his father’s hand because he’s angry. The stone sliding down his throat, inside him, still hasn’t hit bottom.
In the millisecond-millennia of silence following his baby brother’s announcement of his imminent departure, Dean stared at him as one might stare through a window, removed from this plane of existence.
Preoccupied with the slightly rustling blades of grass, the gentle descent of dandelion fuzz through the air outside removing him far away from the gut-wrenching, unprecedentedly nauseating situation at hand.
It takes him so far away and yet, at the same time, catapults him closer:
The rustling blades of imaginary grass keep time with the movement of Sam’s hair, light and fluffy, with a levity that feels like a betrayal. The dandelion fuzz falls in sync with the dust kicked up from the motel mattress, disturbed by the way various possessions are being torn off it, hastily shoved back into the duffel that had erroneously spilled open, starting - or rather simply revealing - this whole nightmare in the first place.
Just one errant piece of paper, screeching out, Congratulations, we are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted… and it didn’t matter, ultimately, where the accepted led to. Cities under crowns of snow. Landscapes of sunny warmth. The seaside town. The electric fence, erected around it all, enforcing his absence.
As the battle wages on between father and youngest son in front of him, Dean stares, far removed and yet waylaid underneath the weight of it. As though looking through a window, counting birds as they viciously tear each other apart in the sky.

Assaggio restaurant - Boston, MA (mid 1990s)
Designed by Arteriors
"Enjoy Italian cuisine in a Renaissance ambiance. Assaggio, designed by Arteriors, re-creates experience of Rome in Boston. Artist-designer Stephanie and Amiel Mesner created an unconventional interior. They used no floor plan. Instead, they improvised as the project progressed. The idea originated from the artworks by Botticelli. The ceiling is filled with grapevines and ivy; Zeus and faux columns are attached to a wall that's decorated in trompe l'oeil marble blocks; the room is topped off full of woodland scenes, with a midnight-blue overhead rendering of the zodiac. Assaggio is a bistro with an underground wine bar. The ceiling is painted to simulate sunlight shining through; the stonewalls and ivy-clad columns are all faux art. The Napoli room is a recreation of a seaside villa."

Richard Siken, "Seaside Improvisation" // Doctor Who + The Master/Missy and The Doctor
Part 1 / Part 2
so I haven't seen much of classic who, but for the "seaside town" line, I really wanted it to be accurate. as far as I can remember and could find, new who hasn't had a scene with the Master near the ocean.
so, like the title, I improvised! I searched "the Master seaside town" and after a bit of finagling and research I found out that there was an episode with the Third Doctor and the Master near the ocean - in it the Master creates an alliance with the Sea Devils (a Silurian-adjacent species that appear in new who with the Thirteenth Doctor).
so, that's why classic who appears in this one!
(fun fact: apparently that episode was also the first instance where it was implied that the Doctor and the Master were once friends!)
{p.s., I don't blame you for being upset at me about the twelvemissy bits. I wanted to cry just finding those shots}
