Be My Proxy 1/2 (Rafe Cameron x black!reader)
Tumblr media
Summary: You are a successful proxy for Steve and Bucky, who are wealthy weapons dealers in New York City. You left as soon as you graduated from Kildare County High School and haven’t been back since. Three years later your bosses send you back to Outer Banks for a deal extension.
Prompt Credit @mostlyheinous : “Turn around and walk out the door while you have the chance, because you aren’t getting away from me.”
Notes: GIF is not mine, all mistakes are my own, some angst (talk about homelessness and poverty)
**
When Mr. Barnes told you where your next proxy assignment was, you let out a huff. He raises a brow at you and you straightened at his attention. “Is there a problem?” He asks. “No, sir.” “It’s came to my attention that you are from this Outer Banks area. Correct?” “Yes sir,” you answer, shifting your weight in the chair.
“Good. You could close the deal that much faster and come back here.” He states, searching through the file in front of him. You’re not sure if the file pertained to your assignment and it wasn’t your place to ask. As if he read your mind, he straightened up the papers before placing them in a manila folder and handing it to you.
He watches as you opened the folders and scanned all of the material. Your goal was to convince a Bobby Heyward and a handful of other fishers to sell their businesses so Mr. Barnes can have another port to sell weapons from. There were other ports he could buy, why Outer Banks?
And yet again, it was not your place to ask. “It shouldn’t take you any longer than three days. You’ll take the jet. You’re dismissed.” He commands and you stood from the chair, smoothing your hands over your skirt.
Your heels clicked as you advance for the door. The security guard opened the door for you and you quietly thanked him. You shut the door to your office quietly and rested your back against it. You haven’t set foot in Outter Banks in three years and for good reason. Nothing good came out of Outer Banks except heart break.
You’re not going to lie to yourself and say that there was nothing there for you anymore because there is. There’s Rafe, the love of your life. Those type of feelings don’t go away for a long time. Despite your love interests here in New York City, none of them cut deep like Rafe did. You crossed the room and sat down in your chair when you heard a knock on your door.
You looked up to see Mr. Rogers and you waved him in. His wide stature filled your doorway as he crossed his arms while he leans against the wall. “Everything alright?” “Yeah, everything’s fine, sir. Why do you ask?” “You look… nervous. That’s a look I’ve never seen on your face before.” He explains.
“I assume Mr. Barnes called you over,” “No, I was on the way to talk to him, actually. Is he in?” “Yes, he is.” He peered down the hallway towards Mr. Barnes office before returning his attention to you. He enters your office and rounds the desk to come sit in front of you.
“If you’re thinking of quitting, I’m sure we can work something out.” “I’m-“ you trailed off into a chuckle. “I’m not thinking of leaving, sir.” “Steve,” he corrects. “Steve,” you repeat. “Even though he doesn’t like to admit it. He loves you very much. You’re like our baby. We taught you all we know and you’re our best proxy. If something is wrong, you can tell us.” “Nothing is wrong sir- Steve. I’ll be okay. Just going back to my roots, I suppose.” You explain.
“You’re going to Outer Banks?” “Yes, sir.” He chuckles when you face palm yourself at the slip up. “Well I tell you what, I’m taking you out to lunch and to the masseuse.” “That’s not necessar-“ “Right now. I don’t like seeing you stressed.” He intercepts.
“I just.. I don’t want anyone thinking I’m being handed anything or I’m experiencing nepotism.” you slightly sagging in your chair. “You are my favorite. There’s no doubt about it. But the numbers do not lie. You close the most deals than any other proxy in the business.” “And if anybody has something to say about, tell them to come talk to me.” He adds with a wink.
“Everything alright in here?” Mr. Barnes asks. You opened you mouth but Steve beat you to the punch. “I was about to take Y/N to lunch if you wanted to join us.” Steve offers. “No, I was going to grab something on the way.” He answers, peering down at his watch for a moment. “Handle your business, boss. I’ll catch you a little be later.” Steve jokes and Mr. Barnes beelines to the elevator.
“Such a hard ass. Isn’t he?” Steve says. “No comment,” he stands from the desk and offers you his hand. “Come on. You’re done for the day.”
**
After countless times of Steve offering a security detail to come with you, he believed you and decided to let it go. Your leg bounced nervously once the jet was set to land soon. You really hope you wouldn’t see Rafe. But there’s no telling you wouldn’t. So you started thinking of what to say if you do see him.
The pilot helped load the bags into the private car while you thanked him before sitting in the backseat. You had landed in a private airstrip in Jacksonville but the ride to Outer Banks only added to the jet lag. You were half asleep when you arrived at Beachwoods Resort.
The driver handed the bags off to the bellman and you had tipped both of them for their services. Checking in and taking the elevator to your room felt like a blur. By the time you pushed the door to your room open, you locked the door and immediately jumped into the bed, leaving your luggage by the door.
As soon as you closed your eyes, your phone rang. Groaning with annoyance, you reached into your coat pocket to answer the phone. You groaned even louder when you saw it was 2:06 A.M. A tired smile made it’s way onto your face when you saw it was Steve. “Good morning sir,” “Hey, you made it to the resort okay?”
“Yes,” you answered with a yawn. “Alright well I’ll let you sleep. I just wanted to make sure you were safe.” “Thank you, Steve.” “You’re welcome, sweetheart. Get some rest.” “I will,” you waited for him to hang up before completely passing out the rest of the morning.
**
You were off to a late start when you woke up at 11:15 a.m. Typically your days start at 8:00 a.m. Your Uber was waiting for you downstairs so you sprayed your perfume before leaving the resort for the day. You checked your watch before walking towards the Uber when you heard a familiar voice call your name.
You followed the voice to a very familiar face but it didn’t quite click just yet. You didn’t recognize the man that was next to him. The two of you stared at each other as he walked closer to you, his mouth hanging open in disbelief. “Y/N/N?”
And that’s when it clicked. It was Rafe. “Ma’am, is everything alright?” The Uber driver asks. You jumped in the car, closed the door and locked it in the speed of light. Rafe ran over to the car and knocked on the door. “No, no, no. Y/N, don’t go please.” Your heart pattered in your chest when you saw the panic in his blue porcelain eyes.
“Should I call the police, ma’am?” The driver asks. Your hand touched the glass where his hand was. You took in a breath to say, “I-I’ll be back. I promise.” He stopped knocking and stepped away, taking some time to control his breathing. “Okay,” you heard him say.
“It’s okay to go. You don’t have to call the police. Everything is okay.” You explained to the driver. “You sure?” “Yes, I’m fine. It’s just… been a long time since I’ve been here. Not that you asked.” You said with a chuckle. You shook your head of the incident so it wouldn’t interfere with your business here.
You were going to swing by the pier to see if the fisherman were there to talk about setting up a formal meeting to talk about specifics. Things were about 60/40 in favor of your deal. You wanted to push for 90/10, but that is a predicament for tomorrow. All you needed were three more yeses.
Your heart rate spiked when the driver pulled up the front of the resort and you saw Rafe sitting on the curb. You took a few deep breathes as you stepped out of the car. Your sweaty palms squeezed your phone and business cards tightly. Your heels clicked as you neared him and he stood over you.
He takes the time to look at you, examining everything he possibly could in case you tried to run away again. Given it’s been a few years, but hasn’t quite changed as much as you have. You’re basically unrecognizable. But you looked happy and taken care of. It makes Rafe sick to his stomach because that could mean someone has been taking care of you.
And that someone isn’t him. “Three years..” he starts. “Three years,” you repeat. “You’re a Kook now, I guess.” “I don’t think it counts as a Kook if my money is somewhere else and not here.” You still had to look up at him, even with heels on. “Where have you been, Y/N? What happened?”
Your cheeks grew hot at his questions and you decided that maybe this wasn’t the best idea. You tried to step around him to walk towards the lobby when he grabbed your arm. “No, you’re not getting away from me again.” Your phone dropped to the ground and your anger was slowly beginning to rise.
You used your free hand to grab his wrist to squeeze at the pressure point. He slowly started to hunch over as he groaned in pain. “I’m not the girl you used to know, Rafe. Leave me alone.” You let go of his wrist and push him away. Picking up your phone before speed walking towards the lobby, you heard him say, “Hey!” He runs after you, blocking you from entering the building.
“We still need to talk.” “I don’t owe you anything. Move.” “No,” he stands tall over you, not faltering for a bit. “Rafe,” you warn. “I don’t know where you learn that Karate shit you just pulled, but I know you wouldn’t hurt me. Not intentionally. Because you still love me.” “No I don’t,” you tried to step around him but he cut in front of you once again.
“I just want to talk. Please..” “Fine. But if you pull something like that again, I will throw you.” You warn and he holds his hands up in surrender. “I’m sorry. It won’t happen again.” He let’s you lead the way and you walked to the elevator, tapping your key card for the doors to open.
“So are you like a millionaire or something?” He asks when the elevator closes. “Or something,” “I have so many questions.” “I bet you do,” the doors ding as they open and you walk to your room. “The amount of money you accumulated takes most people their entire lives to make. So how did you do it?”
You stopped in your tracks and looked over at him. “This is what you wanted to talk about? How I got my wealth?”
“Of course not, I’m just trying to calm myself down because you are even more drop dead gorgeous than when I last saw you. You look totally out of my league. And I dread the fact that you might be married or something because I’m still so deeply in love with you that I can’t even think straight right now.” He confesses, unable to look you in the eye.
You turn back around to open the door and let him into the room. You rested your purse and briefcase on the desk. Rafe closed his eyes as he smelled the perfume he smelled on you in the elevator. He had to know what it was because he found so addicting.
You leaned against the desk with your arms crossed it. “So.. what do you wanna know?” He sits on the edge of the bed, manspreading and leaning his arms on his legs. “Why did you leave? Why didn’t you tell me?” He says after a long pause. “How can you even ask me that question, Rafe? ‘Why did I leave?’ I was a Pogue with no family.”
“I’m your family. I could have taken care of you,” “That’s never been in my blood, Rafe, and you know it. I wasn’t born to sit there and look pretty at home while you worked and did things.” “You could have at least told me. Not leave me wondering if you’d died or something. I loved you, Y/N.”
“Loved me? Rafe you kept me secret the entire time we were in high school. You claimed to be in love with me but never kissed me in the hallway or held my hand. You conditioned me to feel loved only if you gave me attention and that was it. That wasn’t a life I wanted.” He rubs the back of his neck as he stands from the bed.
“I know I was an idiot in high school. I cared too much about labels back then, I don’t give a shit about them now, alright. I love you so much, Y/N/N. You made me feel peace in a world of chaos. I’m willing to grow up for you.”
“Why? Why didn’t you tell me any of this when it mattered?” He closes the gap between you and took your hands into warm hands. “It still matters. You still matter. We still matter.” You tried to pull away from him, he tightened the grip on your hands and pulled you close so you were flushed against his chest.
“Look me in the eye and tell me that you don’t still love me.” He whispers, looking into your eyes. Tears brimmed in your eyes the longer he looked at you and you turned your face away from him. He followed you, holding your face in his hands. “I know I hurt you by keeping you secret and keeping things convenient for me, and I’m sorry. Now I know that if you love someone, you do everything you can to make them feel special.” He says softly.
“I love you,” he says against yours lips. You held your breath when he slowly leans in and presses his lips to yours. The first kiss was soft and quick. He pulled away to look at you, silently asking permission to continue. You slip out of his hands, wrapping your arms around his neck and smoothing your hand over his buzzcut. “I love you too,” you whispered, a few stray tears left your eyes.
“Do you like it?” He asks, referencing to his buzzcut. “I think I do, surprisingly.” “God, you’re beautiful.” He says softly, wiping your tears away. He leans in again and pressed a passionate kiss to your lips, his hands finding your hips. Just as the kiss intensified, your phone started to ring.
“Sorry, I have to take this.” You said, putting a hand on his chest to give you some space. You reached into your bag and saw it was from Mr. Barnes. “Hi, sir.” You greeted once you answered. “Everything alright? You sound… different.” “I’m fine, sir. How are you doing?”
“I’ve been better. Things run a lot smoother when you’re here.” “My apologies sir. I’ll be there as soon as I can.” “Have you spoken with the prospects yet?” “Yes, I got six yeses from formal introductions alone. Tomorrow I’m brushing everything with a fine tooth come to make it nine yeses.”
“I trust you can get it done. I sent you a few proposals I need you to revise before my meeting at noon.” “I’m on it, sir.” “Good. See you soon.” “Bye,” you waited until he hung up and you had to bring yourself out a business mode. Something about Mr. Barnes that just makes you on edge. He’s literally the complete opposite of Mr. Rogers.
“Everything alright?” Rafe asks, smoothing his hands over your arms. You sighed at the contact and he kissed down your jawline. “I have to do some work.” You said softly. “I’ll wait until you’re done then,” “You’ll only distract me. I have to be completely focused, nearly engrossed in my work. They don’t expect anything less from me.”
“Sounds stressful,” the crease between his brow deepens with concern. “It is. But the pay off is worth it.” “You can’t be here when I’m working,” you add, trying to make things lighthearted as possible. “You’re kicking me out? So soon?” He teases, and you’re very glad he caught on.
“You need to find a way to make it up to me, sweetheart.” He adds. “Lunch tomorrow?” You offered. “It’s a date,” he cupped your cheeks and pressed a series of kisses to your lips, holding your body close to his. Each time you tried to pull away, he caught your chin and kissed you. By the third time, you were a giggling mess.
“Go, Rafe before I change my mind.” “I’m leaving, I’m leaving,” he surrenders with his hands up. He pressed a final kiss to your lips before advancing to the door. “Oh wait,” you crossed your arms and he added, “You didn’t give me your number,” he pulls out his phone and clicked on a new contact.
He types something before giving you the phone. You smiled at the contact name he gave you, “Sweetheart 💛😘”. “Can I call you tonight?” He asks once you gave the phone back to him. “Don’t get any ideas,” a mischievous smirk make its way on his lips and you realized you may have sparked something you shouldn’t have.
“See you tomorrow,” you watch as he walks out of the room, a deep sigh leaving your lips when you heard the door click shut. It was like no time had passed.

I've referenced things sounding like "boomer poems" several times but I don't think that's as universal a reference as I think, but once upon a time the dominant mode of expression for boomers online were interminable nostalgia poems and not memes where the Minions express fascist leanings. I found a lot of these on the old Snopes Glurge boards but sadly those are gone & a lot of these gone with it
Let's take a look at an exemplar of the form, preserved by this glorious Web 1.0 website (and some thoughts on the genre at the end)
Long ago and far away, in a land that time forgot, Before the days of Dylan , or the dawn of Camelot. There lived a race of innocents, and they were you and me,
"Race" is a interesting choice of word here. I also like that this is very specifically 1950s nostalgia and excludes even early 60s nostalgia, even the parts of the 60s that were still the 50s culturally (aka the American Graffiti years)
For Ike was in the White House in that land where we were born, Where navels were for oranges, and Peyton Place was porn.
"Navels were for oranges" Nobody had belly buttons until that bastard LBJ
We longed for love and romance, and waited for our Prince, Eddie Fisher married Liz, and no one's seen him since.
One gender was expected to get married as soon as possible in a more limited social circle than now, a situation that never once went awry!
We longed for love and romance, and waited for our Prince, Eddie Fisher married Liz, and no one's seen him since.
Because his career was destroyed over marrying his dead friend's widow, Elizabeth Taylor (I didn't know who that was, I had to look him up)
Only girls wore earrings then, and 3 was one too many, And only boys wore flat-top cuts, except for Jean McKinney.
We strictly enforced gender standards and we had no choice but to like it!
I have no idea who Jean McKinney is. Searching for "Jean McKinney 1950s" just turns up this poem???
And only in our wildest dreams did we expect to see A boy named George with Lipstick, in the Land That Made Me, Me.
Boy George is a fearful icon of gender fuckery to older people, which makes him becoming a vocal transphobe who makes pronoun jokes even more depressing. Sorry if you found out that way. Also he once kidnapped someone and handcuffed him to a radiator for two days. ...sorry if you found out that way
We fell for Frankie Avalon, Annette was oh, so nice, And when they made a movie, they never made it twice..
We didn't have a Star Trek Five, or Psycho Two and Three, Or Rocky-Rambo Twenty in the Land That Made Me, Me.
I love these lines bc for one they aren't true. 1950s cinema was rife with remakes, extremely long series, and actors who played the same character in the same plots over and over. They made seven movies about a talking mule named Francis (not to ding Francis the Talking Mule, not to ding anything starring Donald O'Connor, who firmly Rules Actually).
But also it's funny that the bankrupt, formulaic era here is the 1980s. Which is now subject to identical nostalgia only now it's people sitting in front of posters for The Fly and Friday The 13th VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan bemoaning that Hollywood used to have ideas man, not all these remakes and sequels today
Miss Kitty had a heart of gold, and Chester had a limp, And Reagan was a Democrat whose co-star was a chimp.
The 1950s were great bc of a Western show that mostly ran in the 60s that had a character who was all but said to be running a brothel
We had a Mr. Wizard, but not a Mr. T, And Oprah couldn't talk yet, in the Land That Made Me, Me.
Oof! Oh boy! Oh yikes! Oh, oh boy! Oh boy! Oh, dear! Oh, man!
I don't think these lines mean...that, but also could've, uh, been more thoughtful about what celebs they picked to say weren't around back then
"Oprah couldn't talk yet" Because she was six, or because if she tried to have a show, she'd uhhhhhhhhhhhhh
We had our share of heroes, we never thought they'd go, At least not Bobby Darin, or Marilyn Monroe. For youth was still eternal, and life was yet to be, And Elvis was forever in the Land That Made Me, Me
Bobby Darin was chronically ill his entire life, and his knowledge that he would die young from his illness was the main motivator of his entire music career, but fair on the rest. In the 1950s, some famous people died young, unlike every other decade
We'd never seen the rock band that was Grateful to be Dead, And Airplanes weren't named Jefferson, and Zeppelins were not Led.
*groan*
And Beatles lived in gardens then, and Monkeys lived in trees, Madonna was Mary in the Land That Made Me, Me.
*GROAN*
We'd never heard of microwaves, or telephones in cars, And babies might be bottle-fed, but they weren't grown in jars.
Something else that identifies this as clearly written in or about the 80s is the jab at test tube babies, part of a full fledged moral panic then. A time where people would sincerely tell parents of children conceived by IVF that their children were abominations born without souls
And pumping iron got wrinkles out, and 'gay' meant fancy-free, And dorms were never co-Ed in the Land That Made Me, Me.
Apparently the 50s were the last decade where "gay" usually meant "happy" instead of "gay", though it did also mean "gay"
Also, *groan*
We hadn't seen enough of jets to talk about the lag, And microchips were what was left at the bottom of the bag.
Tbh I don't actually mind the reminder that, for people of the time, casual air travel was still so new, so seemingly miraculous that all the minor inconveniences wrought by it being a routine thing didn't even occur to people
But also, *groan*
And hardware was a box of nails, and bytes came from a flea, And rocket ships were fiction in the Land That Made Me, Me.
Rocket ships were a fantasy detailed every week on Walt Disney's TV show by a scientist with suspiciously few stated qualifications & a thick German accent
T-Birds came with portholes, and side shows came with freaks, And bathing suits came big enough to cover both your cheeks.
We used to goggle at disabled people in carnivals and cover our entire ass when swimming, unlike now
And Coke came just in bottles, and skirts below the knee, And Castro came to power near the Land That Made Me, Me.
I really didn't expect one of these boomer nostalgia poems to include nostalgia for Castro's revolution. Viva la revolución, comrade
We had no Crest with Fluoride, we had no Hill Street Blues, We had no patterned pantyhose or Lipton herbal tea Or prime-time ads for those dysfunctions in the Land That Made Me, Me.
Not here for bemoaning toothpaste polluting our precious bodily fluids but honestly a world without boner pill commercials is tempting
There were no golden arches, no Perrier to chill, And fish were not called Wanda, and cats were not called Bill
Perrier was introduced in 1898, but I also love the specific jibes that fish weren't called Wanda back then. What a weird pop culture property to single out and what a weird way to single it out
And middle-aged was 35 and old was forty-three, And ancient were our parents in the Land That Made Me, Me.
We all ate lead paint and were forcibly sent off to die in wars and we LIKED IT!!!
If you didn't grow up in the fifties, You missed the greatest time in history,
...gender, race, and sexuality permitting!
This is a mild one but there were some much more haughty ones I should try and dig up. I thought these were hilarious when I was like 16.
I think what this exposes is how often nostalgia is nostalgia for being a child. People get lost in the weeds and think their childhood was special for when it happened, but if they're lucky and grew up in a stable situation, people tend to remember the same things about childhood regardless of when it happened. Nostalgia for a specific time becomes a problem when they assume nobody born after, or before, can have something similar, that the modern world took away everything special, but...they're still kids. Their childhood won't look like yours, but twenty, thirty years from now, they'll remember it the same way you do.
The greatest time to grow up is a irrelevant question, because the greatest time to be a kid wasn't great because of the time. It was great because you were a kid
Really can't overemphasize that a lot of these aren't so gentle and are in full "back in my day we RODE IN THE BACK OF THE PICKUP TRUCK and NONE OF US EVER DIED!!! Pansies!!!!" mode

'Netflix has released a new trailer for their upcoming thriller drama series Ripley, which is based on author Patricia Highsmith’s classic novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley. It looks like it will be a great show!
The series stars Andrew Scott, who portrays the main character, a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York. “He is hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son Dickie Greenleaf to return home. Tom’s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud, and murder. Meanwhile, Marge Sherwood, an American living in Italy, suspects darker motives underlie Tom’s affability.”
The series will be able to dive more into the story and characters than the 1999 film adaptation with Matt Damon and Jude Law. Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, Eliot Sumner, Maurizio Lombardi, Margherita Buy and John Malkovich.
The series is written and directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Steven Zaillian (Searching For Bobby Fisher, All The King’s Men, The Night Of). It will be released on Netflix on April 4th.'

I'm gonna list a few of the movies my mom or dad introduced to me when they were around my age or older that they love and that I love, too.
Tumblr media
Pirates Of Penzance
This is honestly a hilarious movie that has a good soundtrack, I havent watched it in about a year or two but I believe it aged well enough..?
Tumblr media
Rear Window
Ngl this one actually kept me really interested the whole time I first watched it and it's still really good.
Tumblr media
12 Angry Men
My fucking goodness I loved this movie so much it was so interesting and I loved it. When I first watched it, I didnt wanna watch something new, but within less than 10 minutes I was sucked in and I didnt move from my spot that whole movie
Tumblr media
The Shawshank Redemption
It shows the sad reality of prisons and how they're treated, it's an inspirational story ngl, and it has some really sad but beautiful moments.
Tumblr media
The Princess Bride
The iconic quotes in this is enough let alone the only cishet couple that I ship like I do my gay couples. It has something for everyone.
Tumblr media
Fried Green Tomatoes
The lesbian couple, the beautiful scenery, the cannabalism, the funny moments. Yes, one of those is not like the others. It also shows a lot of stuff about racism and is just a cute feel good eat-your-racist-white-man movie
Tumblr media
Searching For Bobby Fisher
I dont know how to play chess. I dont like many things about chess. But I quite honestly think this one is really interesting and I love the characters and story with it.
Tumblr media
Oliver
FAGIN AND DODGER ARE THE MOST ICONIC CHARACTERS EVER. The music is really good, and they're all entertaining as fuck.
Tumblr media
Suicide Kings
Quite honestly all I remember from this one is that Irah was the funniest character ever and it confused me a little bit with the ending.
Tumblr media
Fiddler On The Roof
I dont care for religion tbh but the way they have it in this I respect a lot, the MUSIC ahhhh I am obsessed with it.
That's all I can put for now, these are all what my family considers "rainy day movies" and since today is a rainy day we are watching the shawshank redemption and I wanted to make this list :)

Robert Fisher: one of the Ten Most Wanted Fugitives
Fisher enlisted in the United States Navy and attempted to become part of the SEALs, but was not successful. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and fisherman. Fisher worked as a firefighter in California but was forced to retire after a back injury. He then moved his family to Arizona and embarked on a career in the medical field. He worked as a surgical catheter technician, and respiratory therapist.
He married Mary Cooper in 1987. He was described as a cruel and distant control freak toward his family, having once turned a garden hose on Mary after he perceived her to have spoken out of turn. The couple fought about sex and money, with Mary taking a job that she told friends was a "security fund." Fisher was embarrassed that his son Bobby did not like to hunt or fish, and once tried to teach him and daughter Brittney how to swim by throwing them off a boat.
Friends noticed him exhibiting disturbing behavior on hunting trips and other outdoor activities. In one case, after killing an elk, he began smearing its blood on his face. On at least one occasion, he snuck up behind a family that was picnicking and emptied his gun into the air. He also killed a pitbull because “he wanted to”.
A neighbor reported hearing a loud argument coming from inside the Fisher home at 10:30 pm on April 9, 2001, approximately ten hours before it exploded into flames. However, police theorized that the murders took place between 9:30 pm and 10:15 pm. At 10:43 pm, Fisher was spotted on an ATM camera, where he withdrew $280. Mary's Toyota 4Runner was in the background.
Mary Fisher was shot in the back of the head, and Brittney and Bobby's throats were slashed from ear to ear. At 8:42 am, the house exploded. Firefighters were immediately alerted to the explosion, which was strong enough to collapse the front brick wall and rattle the frames of neighbouring houses for one-half mile (800 m) in all directions. Before firefighters arrived, neighbors used garden hoses to try to keep the flames under control. Firefighters kept the 20-foot-high (6 m) blaze from spreading to other houses. A series of smaller secondary explosions, believed to be caused by either rifle ammunition or paint cans, forced them to keep their distance. One suffered minor injuries to his leg when he lost his balance and fell near the blaze.
The gas line from the back of the house's furnace had been pulled. The accumulating gas was later ignited by a candle that Fisher had allegedly lit, waiting for the gas to accumulate and descend to the flame hours after being lit. This delayed fuse would have given him an approximate ten-hour head start in his successful attempt to evade law enforcement. Fisher's decision to have the house explode is believed to have been an attempt to conceal evidence of his crimes and possibly to cause police to believe that he had died. The burned bodies of a woman and two children were found lying in bed in the burned-out remains. They were identified as Mary (age 38), Brittney (age 12), and Bobby (age 10). Investigators theorized that Fisher murdered his family because he felt threatened by Mary's intent to divorce him, and did not want Brittney and Bobby to go through what he did as a child.
Fisher, who disappeared at the time of the murders, was named as an official (and to date, the only) person of interest in the case on April 14, 2001, when Arizona Department of Public Safety officers were instructed in a statewide bulletin to arrest him. On April 20, the last physical evidence of his whereabouts surfaced when police found Mary's Toyota 4Runner in Tonto National Forest, near the towns of Young and Payson, Arizona, one hundred miles north of Scottsdale. The family dog Blue was found outside the car. An Oakland Raiders hat identical to the one that Fisher was seen wearing in the ATM footage was inside the vehicle. A pile of human excrement was found near the passenger door. Although police searched the area immediately around where the vehicle was discovered, they only searched one out of dozens of nearby caves. Some of these caves form a complex underground network, spanning out for miles beneath the surface. Several professional cavers have suggested that Fisher used them as a hiding place before either escaping, killing himself, or dying from low oxygen levels. Professional cavers have visited these caves many times in the years since the murders, but no sign of Fisher has ever emerged.
Fisher is considered armed and extremely dangerous and has ties to Florida and New Mexico. He remains a wanted fugitive.

PODCAST: 138 - All the King’s Men
Tumblr media
We’re finally getting around to one of the most notorious of aughts era failed awards plays, Steven Zaillian’s All the King’s Men. A remake of the former Best Picture winner and originally heavily predicted in the 2005 season, the adaptation was unceremoniously punted into the following year. The next September, the film had a disastrous debut at TIFF and was in and out of theatres within a month. Incoherent and uninspired with a barking Sean Penn at the center, the film is a soup of accents and flat convolutions that makes for a flop that is more boring than cringeworthy.
Zaillian has yet to direct a film since, but we look back at his other directorial efforts like Searching for Bobby Fisher, as well as a writing career that’s paired him with a top tier of directors. This week, we look at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival packed with successful Oscar plays and remembered for its thwarted Borat premiere. And we discuss The Departed and Scorsese’s winding road to Best Picture, almost again blocked by a stealth Clint Eastwood. Mark Ruffalo quiz alert!
Topics also include Kate Winslet’s odd lineup of 2006 titles, why Jude Law is better when not playing a traditional leading man, and the traumatic cinema experience that is Jack the Bear.

Ten weeks away, six beats off
Tumblr media
Been a whirlwind year so far but I'm back in the saddle. I'm busting at the seams with drivel on records and the best way to unleash it is in these grouped posts. Small plates, quick bites - bon apétit.
Bobby Would, World Wide World (Low Company)
Can Low Company just come back as a label and a record store already? These releases trickling out after its demise are cruel reminders of how essential those self-effacing tastemakers were. The Anti-Clock LP is a doozy, and this second Bobby Would record sounds like a classic right off the bat. Mr. Would sticks to the same stuff that made Baby so damn good: dusty loops, barely discernible vocals with a catchy melody, bright spindly guitar lines for days. Songs like "Natural Killer" and "Walk Away" are the immediate favorites, upbeat on the exterior but bleary-eyed upon close inspection. Repeated listens have revealed that the hungover haze of "Maybe You Should" and the last call sway of "Raft," which might be my favorite, are where he really shines, tempos slowed to a crawl to make room for the rich warmth of his reverb'd mumble and his sparkling guitar. Yeah, I'm crushin' on Bobby Would, but so's everyone I've forced this record upon. Sharp but unassuming, and endlessly listenable, World Wide World is the balm until better days arrive. Top notch, highest recommendation, all the fixin's.
The Begotten, Temidden Laaghangende Wolken (Aguirre)
I'm a new dad and that means I'm searching for music that I can listen to with my daughter without disturbing her, and music that isn't Raffi. Typically that means a lot of drone, and a lot more quiet, introspective music, like the reissue of Lol Coxhill & Morgan Fisher's Slow Music that Aguirre did. Because the reissue job on that record is so good, I decided to roll the dice on a contemporary offering from Aguirre that also sounded like it fit my needs. My initial reaction to hearing the Begotten's music online was that this trio was approaching zones tread upon by Fabulous Diamonds circa Commercial Music, but subsequent listens have decidedly not taken me that far out. While it's clear the band is made up of exceptionally talented musicians, the music tends to be pretty safe and stays close to the shore. The B-side's a bit better: "Eiland Zonder Oceaan" and "60 Manen" are as close as this record gets to the "dub with tears" descriptor from the label, and the gossamer drone of closer "Klauwzeer" is cool, but nothing really sticks once it's over. Seems like these guys could probably freak out the crowd at a traditional jazz club, but Temidden Laaghangende Wolken keeps the listener at arms' length, simmering but ultimately tepid once you're beneath the surface.
Cube, Drug of Choice (Alter)
Fave record of the year so far! I caught Cube (aka Adam Keith) burning down the Pilot Light what seems like an eternity ago, touring on his last LP, Decoy Street. Nothing on that LP approached the fiery performance I saw, but he's definitely harnessed that energy on Drug of Choice. The record flows seamlessly, corroded breakcore flooding into all corners, causing machines to gasp and whirr and burst, and Keith's intermittent vocalizations are as sinister and biting as they are introspective and philosophical. "Natural Selector" has all of the above, but for my money it's the closing duo - the frenzy of "Moderator" and the terrifying strobelight beatdown of "Cusp" - that really show the piledriving exterior/groaning interior dichotomy that makes the record so magnetic. The label said it best: Drug of Choice "deliver[s] something that feels as much focused on artful constructions of private experiences as it does the cathartic qualities of noise." Alter's quietly releasing some of the best contemporary records, but Cube's Drug of Choice has all the right stuff to justifiably blow up their profile. Wildly intense and devious record; grip a copy and lose your mind with me. While you're at it, check out Adam Keith's amazing Baited Area zine - some of the most engaging arts 'n culture writing/interviews this side of Demystification.
The Gagmen, s/t (iDEAL)
Aaron Dilloway, Nate Young, Joachim Nordwall and apparently Andrew W.K. teamed up as the Gagmen for a performance a few years ago, captured here and put to wax by Nordwall himself for his iDEAL label. I was expecting a pretty blistering assault given the clientele, but what you get is the opposite: slow loops, spare instrumentation, Young's sleepy vocals, all stark and creepy and forcing you to lean into it. The end of the second track gets a little intense, with some wailing loop and white noise combining to tickle your ear hairs, but aside from those couple of minutes, the bulk of The Gagmen is like a black breezy night forcing things to move that usually don't. Puts a knot in your stomach, it does. Hey, it's not for everyone, but if you loved the Komare LP from last year like me, you're gonna find a lot to enjoy here.
Monokultur, Ormens Väg (ever/never)
Glad to see Monokultur continuing their relationship with ever/never, not least of all because those overseas shipping costs hurt. Ormens Väg is the Swedish duo's second LP, and right from the jump they're seemingly headed in a more accessible pop direction. It's a good look for them: opener "Decennium" features big warm keyboards and probably the most exposed vocals from the band yet, kinda coming across like the Knife covering Berlin. It's followed by my favorite track, "För sent," which has a bass line that melts and soothes your ears, topped by JJ Ulius' forlorn (I'm assuming) spoke-sung vocals. The band nods at an earlier incantation of themselves on the buzzed descent of "Kanske blir det sämre", but for the most part the rest of Ormens Väg continues in this gorgeous, warm and spare mode. Take the beautiful instrumental "Vårdagjämning," which almost sounds like it was lifted from the xx's cutting floor until the tape loops emerge like swirling smoke to cloud the proceedings. By the track's end the band somehow ends up on Robert Turman's turf but everything feels cohesive, all of it delicately presented. Shit, even the snippet of "Silent Night" emerging at the end of the title track doesn't take the record off course. Pretty much perfect little record, and yet another early favorite from this year.
Nina Harker, s/t (Animal Biscuit/La République des Granges/Le Syndicat des Scorpions)
This record came out in the middle of 2020, but I missed it then and it's a current obsession now. Shoutout to @dustedandsocial, Yellow Green Red, Fuckin' Record Reviews and everyone else who pointed me in its direction, late as I may be. I don't have a whole lot of info on Nina Harker but it appears that it's the work of one Valentin Noiret, some mad multilingual genius working between the lines connecting Dome, La Grande Triple Alliance and Enhet För Fri Musik. "L'affreuse" is pretty illustrative of how Nina Harker condenses genres into bite-size packets: the woozy, seasick synth topped by Xasthur-like vocals, which are then joined by what sounds like despairing Japanese, the shuffling song slowly building up to this terribly simple guitar part that just levels you when it hits. Not everything is so busy: "Müssen Wir Noch Aufblühen⁇" is a fantastic slice of minimal synth, and the two late night strummers "το κορίτσι γαβγίζει" and "Muto" are disarming in their stripped-down simplicity. The hum that overwhelms "Muto" razes the field to make way for the robotic waltz and maniacal ravings on "Du Schaffst es Nicht," one of many catchy, totally bizarre moments on the record. Nina Harker is riddled with anxiety, moving from frenzied to haunting without batting an eye, but it's also an absolutely singular approach to the dread and restlessness lurking in the corners. Perhaps more prescient than they would've guessed when they made this record. Stunning, hits the spot every time, track down a copy posthaste.

What movies and/or shows are we gonna watch this weekend?
Hot Rod
A hilarious movie about a stunt man who is accident prone and must get $50,000 for his step dad's heart surgery so he can kick his ass and prove to him that he's a man and he can finally respect him. Starring Andy Samberg, Bill Hader, Ian Mcshane (Winston from John Wick), and Isla Fisher. It just hit Netflix and I've watched it like fifteen times already. Culturally, you have to see this movie.
The Big Lebowski
Where's the money Lebowski?! I still haven't seen this movie. Jeff `The Dude' Leboswki is mistaken for Jeffrey Lebowski, who is The Big Lebowski. The Dude seeks restitution for his ruined rug and enlists his bowling buddies to help get it. Starring John Goodman, Jeff Bridges, Steve Buscemi, and Julianne Moore.
Enola Holmes
How have we not watched this movie yet? While searching for her missing mother, intrepid teen Enola Holmes uses her sleuthing skills to outsmart big brother Sherlock and help a runaway lord. We must watch this. I feel it's like an evil betrayal if we don't. Starring the one and only beautiful Millie Bobby Brown, our girl.
The Truman Show
One of my favorite Jim Carrey movies of all time. He doesn't know it, but Truman's life is part of a massive TV set and a show that's about him. They have hidden cameras everywhere that watches his every move. Every person he interacts with, even his wife and best friend, are actors. He eventually discovers this and must decide what he should do about it. This movie is beautiful and great and so creative and mind blowing, but it also raises so many questions to me. Kinda the same way WALL-E raises so many questions. But I still love it. That last scene alone is one of the greatest moments in TV history. Starring Jim Carrey.
Stranger Than Fiction
This is another clever and mind blowing movie that's similar to The Truman Show. This feels like a story we wrote. A mentally unstable IRS auditor Harold Crick hears an author's voice in his head and discovers that he is the ill-fated protagonist of her latest work. The author thinks her stories are fictional, when in fact she's writing and narrating someone's true life and killing them off in the end. A fascinating movie that isn't talked about as much as it should be. Starring Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Queen Latifah, and Dustin Hoffman (Rain Man).
The Umbrella Academy
Obvious reasons why we need to watch this. You already know all the lore and shit already. On one day in 1989, 43 infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by billionaire industrialist Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who creates the Umbrella Academy and prepares his "children" to save the world. In their teenage years, though, the family fractures and the team disbands. Fast forward to the present time, when the six surviving members of the clan reunite upon the news of Hargreeves' passing. They work together to solve a mystery surrounding their father's death, but divergent personalities and abilities again pull the estranged family apart, and a global apocalypse is another imminent threat. The series is based on a collection of comics and graphic novels created and written by My Chemical Romance lead singer Gerard Way. GERARD! I DIDN'T KNOW THAT!
We Are Who We Are
Right here, right now, right here, right now, right here, right now, right here, right now... Two American kids who live on a U.S. military base in Italy explore friendship, first love, identity, and all the messy exhilaration and anguish of being a teenager. Starring Jack Dylan Grazer. (I think his character is gay.)
I have more on my list if you want more
I'm very determined to watch the Umbrella Academy and the Truman Show

1988 Home and Away moments that gave me the feels
1. Alan Fisher’s death and Bobby reading his letter to her where he says “Or...maybe you're my wife. I've got a very strong feeling about you and me. I feel we're going to become more and more important to each other as time goes on.”
2. Bobby going to search for Ailsa in the city and saying “So here I am.  Hug me to death.”
3. Fisher announcing that Alan had won the Most Popular Student award.

Ties in Blood -- Chapter 34

Chapter 34
“There’s no way there’s angels,” Aaliyah argued.
“Then what else could it be?” Sam countered.
Aaliyah had been pacing Bobby’s living room where he sat at his desk, Sam sat in a chair with Dean standing not far from.
“All I know is that I wasn’t groped by an angel,” Dean tossed into the conversation.
“Okay, Dean. But what would this Castiel have to lie to you about it?” Sam asked.
“Maybe he’s some kind of demon. They lie.”
“A demon that’s immune to salt rounds, devil’s traps, and Ruby’s knife,” Aaliyah said, her pacing coming to a stop. “Lilith’s afraid of that thing.”
“Don’t you think at one point a hunter … you know … woulda seen one?” Dean asked them both.
“You did,” Aaliyah pointed out.
“I’m trying to figure out a theory here; work with me,” Dean pled. “One with less fairy dust.”
“Okay, look.” Sam leaned forward in the chair. “I’m not saying we know for sure. I’m just saying that we …”
“That’s the point, we don’t know for sure. So I’m not gonna believe that this … thing’s an angel of the Lord just because it says it is.”
“You three chuckleheads gonna argue religion, or come look at this?” Bobby called over to them.
Aaliyah looked over at the older hunter and walked over to look at what was laid out.
“I got stacks of lore,” he started. “Biblical, pre-Biblical. Hell, some of it’s in cuneiform. It all says that an angel can snatch a soul from the Pit.”
“What else?” Dean prodded. “What else can it do?”
“Air lift your ass outta hell? Nothing.”
“This is good news,” Sam said.
“How’s this good news?” Aaliyah asked.
“For once this isn’t demon crap. He was saved by the good guys.”
“Say it is true,” Dean jumped in. “Then what? There’s a God?”
“At this point, Vegas’ money’s on yeah,” Bobby said.
“I don’t know, guys.” Dean took a few steps away from the desk.
“I know you’re not all choir boy about this,” Sam said. “But it’s becoming less about belief and more about proof.”
“Proof?” Aaliyah questioned; her eyes narrowed. “What proof?” She heard Dean join them back at the desk.
“That there’s a God out there …”
“And he gives a crap about me personally?” Dean cut Sam off. “I’m not buying it.”
Aaliyah nodded. Why would God, or any deity, give a crap about someone who was in Hell? Or a misfit family of hunters?
“Why not?” Sam asked.
“Because why me? If there is a God, why would he give a crap about me?” Dean asked. “I mean, I’ve saved some people, okay. I figured that makes up for the stealing and ditching chicks. But why do I get to be saved? I’m just a regular guy.”
“Apparently you’re a regular guy that’s important to the man upstairs,” Sam argued.
“That creeps me out,” Dean said. “I don’t like being singled out at birthday parties, much less … God.”
“What do we know about angels?” Aaliyah cut in. She watched Bobby lift up a pile of books and dropped them on the desk.
“Start reading,” the older hunter instructed.
Aaliyah took a book from the pile while Dean told Sam he was getting pie. She flomped down onto the couch and got comfortable. After a while, her attention drifted away from the book. Her head started nodding as sleep crept up on her. The sound of her phone ringing caught her from answering sleep’s call.
“Mm’lo,” she muttered.
“Is this Aaliyah Fisher?” the caller asked.
“Depends on why you’re calling?” Aaliyah adjusted herself on the couch into a sitting position.
“I’m calling on the behalf of one Casey Fisher. My name’s Georgetta Hayes, Mr. Fisher’s lawyer. I need to get ahold of any one of Mr. Fisher’s children.”
“What about?” Aaliyah dug.
“It is something I feel better discussed in person with my retainer’s children,” Georgetta told her. “Can you pass on the message to them?”
“Only if you can provide an address for them?” Aaliyah countered, searching for a scrap piece of paper and pen. She jotted the address down as the lawyer provided it. “Thank you.” She ended the call as she pushed herself off the couch.
“Guys, something’s come up,” she called out, gathering her things.
“And you’re taking off?” Dean asked. “What’s so important…”
“Family issues, apparently. I know finding out what brought you out of hell, but maybe dealing with this…” Aaliyah held up the address. “Will finally stop my father coming out of the past.”
“Your fault for digging him up in the first place,” Dean told her.
“Yeah, I know.” Aaliyah made sure she had her things packed and headed for the door, stopping long enough to give Dean a kiss on his head. “I’ll keep in touch. Promise. Call me if anything major happens.”
She stepped out the back door and down the steps to her cycle. With her things secured in the saddle bags, Aaliyah mounted the cycle and started it up. Her stomach knotted a little from guilt in leaving the three hunters, but the lawyer refused to discuss matters over the phone. No matter, she would just call Leo and Nissa when she stopped on the way back to her hometown.
***
Aaliyah dumped her bag on the motel bed and fumbled through it for clean clothes. Having pushed through the night, the only things she was looking forward to was a hot shower and a quick nap. Her cell started ringing as she started up the shower.
“I hope you’re not planning on yelling,” she spoke. “After all your family drama I was dragged through…”
“It’s your family drama too,” Leo cut in. “Just so you know. Where are you?”
“In town, just got a room. Why?”
“Feel like lunch with me and Nissa? Think Xander’s looking forward to seeing you.”
Aaliyah stopped in middle of stripping off her shirt at the mention of her brother’s name. Guilt crept in before she shoved it off to a side. “The rehab place let him out?”
“After our work with the Djinn, they were a bit … eager to get him out,” Leo said. “You’d know that if you kept in touch more often.”
“I’m bad enough trying to keep myself in check,” Aaliyah countered. “We can play catch up in, say about an hour at Annie’s Kitchen.”
“Sure, sounds good.”
She waited for Leo to end the call before putting her phone on the sink counter. Making the shower quick and putting on the clean clothes, Aaliyah made sure she had her things before grabbing her helmet and heading out.
***
“Liyra,” Nissa greeted as she pushed herself to her feet for a hug.
Aaliyah accepted the hug, returning it. “Hey, Nissa.”
“What’s up with the biker get up?” Xander asked.
Aaliyah pulled from Nissa and looked at her older brother. “I was taken in by a biker gang a few months back; adopted more or less.” She shed the leather jacket and draped it over the back of a chair. “It’s been quite a while since Christmas last year.”
“Anything to drink, love?” the waitress asked as Aaliyah sat.
“Coffee, or coke. Anything caffeinated.”
The waitress nodded and headed off.
“So, what’s happened with you and the Hardy Boys?” Leo asked. “How much trouble did you guys get into?”
Aaliyah sat there as memories flashed through her mind between Christmas the year before and then. Her body shuttered when her mind froze on the images of Dean bloody on the ground after being torn to shreds by the hellhounds.
“Aaliyah, what is it?” Xander’s voice cut into her memory.
“It’s … um … Dean had made a cross roads deal to bring Sam back from the dead a little more than a year ago,” she started. “But unlike the usual ten years, he got one. All of last year, even during Christmas, I with the boys tried to find a way to break the deal. We weren’t that lucky.” She took a breath, trying to steady herself. “A hellhound ripped Dean to shreds when his time was up. I had checked out mentally for a week at Bobby’s after that. I took off from his place, getting his words all twisted up, and went off on my own before the bikers took me in.”
She looked around at her siblings just as the waitress came back with the drink for Aaliyah. “Do you all need a minute or two to decide?”
They nodded, sending the waitress off.
“That’s rough,” Leo said. “Remind me not to make any deals like that.”
“You should know not to do that period,” Xander told him. “So, you got involved with a biker group?”
“The Dragons. They know all about Hunters, the supernatural, and all things that go bump in the night,” Aaliyah kept her voice low. “Through no fault of my own.” She grabbed a menu and glanced over the options. “I actually kept out of active hunting until I heard on the news about all the windows being blown out by something.”
“Sub sonic boom,” Leo tossed out. “I’m sure a fighter jet broke the sound barrier that caused it.”
Aaliyah shook her head. “Wasn’t a jet. It was whatever brought Dean back from hell.”
Leo and Nissa half choked on their drinks.
“Wait, he’s back? How?” Nissa asked.
Aaliyah half shrugged. “According to Sam, it was an angel. Dean doesn’t believe it; and I’m …” She shrugged again. “I’m not fully buying it. Being used to dealing with demons and things that wanna kill me, I can’t wrap my head around the fact that there are legit actual angels out there willing to help one lone hunter.”
“You’re joking, right?” Leo asked. “Demons, I get. But even they won’t let someone escape from hell. Why would any angel help any of us?”
“Why would a demon let any of us out of hell?” Nissa countered.
“They wouldn’t.”
Aaliyah looked up from the menu when the waitress returned. She waited for her siblings to order before placing hers. “So, am I to naturally assume we’ve all been called by father’s lawyer?” She watched each of them nod. “Something she couldn’t discuss over the phone?”
“And trying to reach any one of us,” Xander added. “And reaching all of us, it seems.”
“But what’s this business?” Leo asked. “And why in person?”
“Maybe he finally died,” Aaliyah suggested. “The world’s better off with one less of him.”
“If that’s the case, the lawyer might be trying to execute whatever will Father had,” Nissa said.
“If he died, why didn’t mom call us?” Leo asked his sister.
“Maybe she wasn’t listened as one who was to receive anything,” Nissa guessed. “Or the lawyer already told her what she was getting.”
“Or she already got it,” Xander added.
“Does she even know about us?” Aaliyah asked, gesturing between her and Xander. “I saw no pictures of us at the house a few years ago.”
“Wait, you were at our house?” Nissa asked, putting her drink down.
Aaliyah shot a semi guilty look over to Xander, who shrugged. “It was a few years ago when I was trying to figure out what happened to Xander and dad. Before I got caught up with the Winchesters full time.”
“Whatever the lawyer wants, we’ll find out after breakfast,” Leo said.
***
Aaliyah shifted in her chair as the receptionist went about their work and ignoring the four young adults. They had arrived soon after breakfast nearly an hour ago. The woman that had arrived well after them emerged from the lawyer’s office while Georgetta and the woman exchanged farewells. The woman walked out while Georgetta walked back into her office.
“Forget this,” Aaliyah muttered to her siblings as she got to her feet.
Behind her, the receptionist called after her; which Aaliyah ignored. She threw open the door just as Georgetta sat down at the desk.
“You can’t keep us sitting out there all day, Ms. Hayes,” Aaliyah snapped at the lawyer. “You called all four of Casey Fisher’s children, and all four showed up. Now, we’re going to handle this business in person just like you asked of us.”
“I cannot unless…” Georgetta trailed off when the other three siblings walked into the office.
Aaliyah heard the door close behind her while the other two took a seat in the offered two chairs. “Now, you have all four of us here. What is this business to be done in person?”
She watched Georgetta shift in her chair before turning around to dig through some folders. The lawyer returned with one folder.
“I never liked giving bad news like this to relatives,” Georgetta started. “Your father had died about month ago in a freak accident.”
“What sort of accident?” Xander asked.
“All I was told was his body was found out in the woods torn to shreds and his heart missing.”
Aaliyah swore she heard her siblings share a look while she focused on Georgetta. Sounded like the classic werewolf case to her. “What happened to the rest of him?”
“His wife, a Helen Fisher, had him cremated due to his final wishes. And she currently still resides in their house,” Georgetta replied. “Which is acceptable. Which leaves you four. Which of you is Xander?” She nodded when he raised his hand. “You are granted the deed for the land of your childhood home. If you so wish to have it.”
Aaliyah glanced back at her brother, who shook his head. “He doesn’t want it; how does he go about selling it and getting the money from the sale?” She crossed her arms.
“Don’t worry about the details,” Georgetta assured her. “I take it that you’re Aaliyah. He’s given you the keys and title to his truck. Saying how it will work for those jobs when you need to move a dead body. And for Nissa and Leo…” She scanned the paper. “Your father’s other truck. It seems your father had a well off roofing company and the two trucks had been there since the beginning.”
“So, that’s all it was? Handing out property?” Leo asked with a scoff.
“And monies willed to Aaliyah and Xander from their mother’s will. I understand she passed a couple decades ago. It took me this long to hunt you four down for your father.”
“So, they get money and a truck while we get just a truck?” Leo started.
“Not now,” Aaliyah cut him off, barely turning to look at him. “Is there anything we have to do?”
Georgetta flipped through the paperwork. “I’ll sign over the trucks over to you and your young siblings, and start the paperwork for the funds to be transferred into Ms. Aaliyah and Mr. Xander’s accounts. IF there’s any other questions…”
“How’d our father pass away?” Nissa asked.
“The corner’s report says wolf attack with the heart missing.”
Aaliyah uncrossed her arms and actually turned to look at her siblings.
“Well, that’s … unfortunate,” Xander said. “Thanks for telling us. Guys, I think our business here is done.”
Aaliyah heard the warning in her brother’s voice and turned back to Georgetta. “If there’s anything to be mailed…” she reached into her back pocket and pulled out her walled; dropping a card on the desk. “Send it there.” She turned for the door, opening it for Xander to roll through. “And I and one of my siblings over there will be by later for our trucks.”
She was the last one out, closing the door behind them.
“What now?” Leo asked, leaving the building. “Dad’s dead, finally. And we get little from it.”
“You still got a house and a mother to go back to,” Aaliyah snapped. “We don’t. So, go back to your middle class life and leave us alone. And stay out of hunting. I shouldn’t have to remind you what happens if things go bad in a hunt.”
She helped Xander into his vehicle and started off down the road.
***
Aaliyah killed the bike as she came up to Bobby’s. With a call from Dean on the way back from dealing with the lawyer as a warning, she had arrived at the house ready for a fight. She hadn’t seen the Impala, but expected it to pull up at any second. No time to wait for the men to arrive, Aaliyah checked her handgun and eased her way to the door. Just as the rumble of the Impala’s engine echoed through the salvage yard.
One of the brothers had called out to her as she slipped into the house. She ignored them. The call she had with Bobby hadn’t gone well when she told him that the lawyer was going to send paperwork there. The fire poker was laying on the floor in the living room.
“Bobby,” she called out, gun ready.
She heard a door creak open and turned toward. Behind her were the footsteps of someone being quiet in their walking. A hand went up and gestured toward the door.
“Come out, come out, whoever you are,” Aaliyah called.
