Because I saw a post about it, although that was about the Demeter: can Dr. Stephen Maturin (everybody’s favorite Irish-Catalan surgeon/naturalist/spy) from the Aubrey-Maturin books by Patrick O’Brian survive Castle Dracula?

Overall approach to the supernatural: Is a Catholic, although not very demonstrative about it, but that’s partly due to being attached to the British navy. He’s going to assume something is a natural phenomenon/weird cultural practice first, and be curious about both of those things, but he’s not going to reject the supernatural on principle.

Whether they would accept the crucifix from the old lady: Definitely. And he’s already a polyglot, and if he’s going to Romania he has probably been studying Romanian, so he might even get more information from the peasants than Jonathan manages to after they “forget” their German. Not sure if further information will be that useful against Dracula at this point though, if “just leave” isn’t an option. He at minimum concludes Dracula is a cruel landlord, which is going to set him on edge.

Whether they would go exploring after being told not to: Ohhhh yes. (See: Spy. Also Nosy Little Weirdo.) He’s going to go exploring on principle BECAUSE he was told not to.

Ability to manage the whims of a Rich Jerk / hold Dracula's interest: On the one hand he’s perfectly capable of being disingenuous (spy) but he’s not good at hiding it when he’s in a bad mood. I think this depends on what he’s there for. Does Dracula hold the key to the defeat of Napoleon or has he just ended up there somehow? If he thinks he’s there to do real estate business he’s going to be real snippy to Dracula very early on, which will be tough to come back from.

Facility for free climbing: Ahahahaha this man has fallen off of most of the ships in the Royal Navy. Once he tried to climb the rigging while holding onto a rope that wasn’t tied to anything. Nope. That’s not to say he won’t try. If Jack Aubrey can swing in to rescue him at the last minute (Jack canonically does this when Stephen is being tortured by the French government) then Jack can probably climb for both of them. Otherwise no.

Whether they would choose to be eaten by wolves over being eaten by vampires: There’s such a lack of vampires in his books that this is difficult to say. But he’s good at picking up and starting again after all seems lost. I think he would choose the less certain death.

Other relevant information is that he is frequently covered in blood, as he does not seem to clean up after surgery; that he is something of an insomniac except when taking laudanum, which he does in worrying amounts at various points in his canon; that he is good with both swords and pistols, although those are not very helpful against Dracula, but you never know; and that he does not know shorthand as such, but will be sending coded letters.

I think he might just manage to survive, but not without extreme trauma, which will be immediately followed by a timeskip because O’Brian loves doing that.

I did not even bother asking about Jack because he is obviously so drinkable.

This guy sounds wild. And I have to say "the climbing skills of a buttered lungfish" took me out (and sounds likely to take him out as well....) One of you also mentioned a tendency to basically shed garlic bread...?

So I am hearing that he has Opinions, which yeah, might get him into trouble depending on how quickly he moves into Spy Mode. Jonathan pivots by day 3, and he's not expecting to be held prisoner by his wealthy client, so I feel like a guy who gets occasionally tortured by the French might be equally wary if not moreso.

One worry is that his attempts to get messages out might be more sophisticated and therefore more severely punished. Will Dracula recognize him as enough of a threat to necessitate killing him?

As a medical man (?) he seems well-positioned to have Views on exactly how dead Dracula is or isn't, but with his climbing acumen it sounds like no force on earth could coax him out thre window so he may not ever find the crypt - unless his powers of snooping lead him to it by another route.

Is he enough of a snacc to be worth rescuing from the Girlies I wonder? Although if he's suspicious enough going in by virtue of actually speaking the language, maybe he doesn't take the crucifix off to protect his dreams, and the Girlies have a harder time getting at him.

The insomnia I am thinking is a boon because it'll help adjust to the nocturnal schedule without entirely fraying his nerves. I think trying hard to play a role while being visibly in a foul mood might be exactly the kind of thing Dracula finds very very funny.

Ironically, if he never makes it down to the crypt, he won't get Brain Fevered by Dracula, and may well just leave out the front doors when people come in to move out all those boxes (Jonathan can't because he's all wacked out from the shovel assault and also locked in Dracula's room). I presume Dracula will have taken some measure to prevent this though? More than just saying "hey wait for the Calèche that is definitely totally coming" and then trusting him to actually do that. Hmm.

So I am inclined to say yes, Stephen Maturin can survive Castle Dracula, but is severely lacking in an exit strategy

WIP INTRO | Seafarers Book 1

The Promise is on a mission. For the first time since his coronation, King Nicolas has left his gilded halls and set out on an unknown quest across the ocean. On the island he leaves behind, a woman is rescued from the pyre, given a name she didn't ask for, and left, duty-bound and suspicious, in the middle of pirates. She cares little for Captain Hayes, knowing only that he once helped snatch her sister from the sea, and no matter what his ragtag followers say, she knows exactly the kind of man he is. Killing a monster would be much easier if the King stopped chasing a fairytale first.

PREFACE.

Early in life the author of these letters suffered from ill-health, and necessity obliged him to seek more genial climes in order to escape the rigors of our northern winters. Duty towards his only brother and a beloved uncle induced him to sketch his travels, and keep them advised of his movements. His letters passing into the hands of kind friends, for perusal, led to further inquiries; and demands for publication in a weekly paper in his native city, were the result.

He has always hesitated to come before the Public, although constantly solicited and urged by his friends to do so, as a duty he owed to society; at length, through constant importuning, and to avoid the clamors of those he loves and esteems, he has concluded to accede to their wishes. This book is the result.

Traveling becomes a passion with some, and in this instance, a decided one. Necessity at first, with improvement in health, and finding himself better on the move than when quiet, sight-seeing and obtaining general information became more and more desirable.

After having seen every State and Capital in his own country, his desire was to visit every Capital in Europe. After having seen the antiquities and works of art of Italy, Greece, and Turkey, his ambition led him to see the older objects of Egypt and Asia Minor. Then came the desire to visit the Celestial Empire, and the East Indian world.

The West Indian Islands brought a disposition to see those of the Pacific, and those of the Mediterranean, the Levant, and the Polynesian, Canary, Cape de Verde, Azores. North America,[vi] including the Canadas, having been seen, South America in all parts could not be neglected. Northern Africa, Egypt, Syria, Algeria, and Morocco had been visited; but the western and south-western coast of Africa, the Gulf of Guinea, demanded their share of effort and exposure. When in China, he desired to visit Japan, but Commodore Perry had not yet made a treaty. While at Singapore, he wished to embark for Australia; but no opportunity offering during the typhoon season, he was obliged to renounce the idea. Last Spring he made an attempt to get around from the south coast of Africa, but without success. Had he succeeded, his twenty-one years of travel would have probably closed his extended wanderings, as the whole world would have been seen, large portions of it having been repeatedly visited.

He has great reason to be thankful to the Almighty for his preservation of life and health. Surrounded by dangers of every name and nature, while scores of his companions have been swept off by shipwreck, cholera, fever, assassins, and barbarous tribes of savages, or Indians, he has passed unscathed and unharmed.

Captain Nemo (with or without a subterranean pool to park the Nautilus)?

Hmmm!!! Now this is an interesting one!

What strikes me immediately is how much Nemo and Dracula have in common. They are both Princes. They are both obsessed with England. They are both proud and resolute. They both "I too can love." They both kidnap people. They both can enter into the spirit of the Hunter. They both have a fondness for the local "scary" wildlife. They are both real tall and value loyalty.

This could go very well or very poorly. I think the first decider is whether they would accept each other as social equals. Neither is going to react well to being denied a deference he thinks he is owed, and neither is naturally inclined to be deferential. So if the both come in with the attitude of "one Prince to another" then they'll do pretty okay. If either of them starts treating the other as his social inferior it'll get nasty fast. y.

Let's assume for the time being the former. We know Dracula has put a lot of effort into making this work, so he can play nice at the outset at least. They're well-situated for fruitful cooperation. Dracula wants secure water passage to England without too much paper trail, Nemo wants to see England wiped off the face of the earth - they can, if they are so inclined, very much help each other. Of course this ends up requiring that Nemo is always intended to leave the Castle alive, which Jonathan very much is not. If Dracula's guest is not a doomed prisoner things are very very different.

The question then becomes whether Dracula can keep it in his pants uh...mouth I guess??... and reap the full benefits of this mutually beneficial arrangement, or whether he will play Scorpion to Nemo's Frog the way he does with the Demeter. He doesn't need to eat the Nautilus to stay secret - Nemo is already a secret, he's not gonna tell anybody. Also it's real hard to disappear someone on a submarine and Nemo will NOT be pleased if he tries. There is no good reason for him to turn on Nemo ... but can he help himself?? The Devil does not keep his bargains...

The other factor of course is that Nemo has a very strong moral sense. Like yes, he wants to wipe England off the map and he sinks a lot of ships and kills a lot of people... but is he wrong??? Nemo would not be okay with the slaughter of children. But Nemo also has no reason to go snooping around the Castle and sleeping on inappropriate furniture, so he might never find out about it. Ah, but Jonathan does hear the second child cry out, and gets the story pretty direct from its mother, and Nemo is no fool. I think at that point Nemo walks on the deal, so the question is: how far does he get?

Nemo is unlikely to have any divine protection on him. But he is physically powerful in his own right, a technological genius, and he doesn't give up. His lightning weapons may not do much to Dracula (though who knows) but they should keep the wolves off him. He knows how to deal with natural predators. And... I am confident in his ability to crawl, broken and bloody, back to civilization (or wherever) after being half eaten by wolves, if it comes to that. He's a survivor.

Now, if the Nautilus is parked in the swimming pool in the crypt, he just needs to make it downstairs and then he's golden. Buuuut that requires going down the wall. I feel like he has too much dignity to climb? But again he has excellent physical prowess. But again on the other hand so did Renfield and that didn't save him when it came down to fisticuffs. So I may be just as unreasonably dazzled by Nemo as his chronicler.

I think... I think Captain Nemo can survive Castle Dracula, but it's a near thing, and only just
