it really is interesting just how much V4 shows of the grimm that blatantly contradicts what we’re told about them during the beacon arc. right out the gate, too, with bricks and complex improvisational teamwork and the beringel’s emotive reactions to its apparent victory and then realization that its opponent survived the fall through the roof all in the V4 short. everything we learn about the grimm in V1-3 comes filtered through huntsmen academy pedagogy and in the first two volumes every significant direct encounter occurs in proximity—whether diegetic or narrative—to a character who explains them authoritatively using the huntsmen model: pyrrha’s philosophical recitation on the nature of the soul and what makes grimm soulless gives context to the initiation, port describes the grimm as demonic monsters before setting one loose in class, oobleck helpfully provides dollops of exposition to fit the grimm of mountain glenn into the framework laid out in V1. by V3, we have a handle on what these creatures are and the onslaught against beacon plays out—almost—exactly as we would expect based on this understanding, with the singular exception that the grimm are clearly shown to be acting as allies to the non-grimm adversaries. (the white fang transports their own fighters and grimm side-by-side without coming to any harm, and cinder speaks to, makes eye contact with, and signals for an assist from the wyvern.) and the narrative reveals salem at the very, very end to imply an explanation for that singular anomaly.
but… beacon falls. in V4 the school environment is gone and we begin to encounter the grimm outside the controlled pedagogical environment of the huntsmen academy and like IMMEDIATELY the narrative starts throwing curveballs. a beowolf gets up on a roof to throw bricks at ruby. the beringel grabs a beowolf and they flawlessly execute a maneuver we’d call a team attack if a duo of huntsmen did it; later the beringel roars in satisfaction when it thinks ruby is beaten and then reacts with surprise and trepidation when it realizes she isn’t. the villagers in V4 shrug off weeks of provocations by a grimm four young huntresses and huntsmen struggled to defeat. jaune looks at the bodies strewn across the wreckage of shion and asks “who killed all these people,” indicating that “the grimm” is not a foregone conclusion—and the answer turns out to be not grimm but bandits. the sea feilong spends an entire day quietly circling beneath the boat, unnoticed, then reveals herself but doesn’t really do anything except roar and snap once at the huntress who shot her while looping over and around the boat itself—never making contact or actually attacking until after she has been fired on and hit repeatedly, and even then focusing her retaliation narrowly on the ship’s weaponry and the huntsmen attacking her. (the WOR ep notes that grimm are territorial; they don’t prey on animals but violent altercations over territory are not uncommon. what we see in 4.3 isn’t a grimm attack. it’s a territorial threat display that escalates because nobody on the boat can tell the difference between a grimm saying “LEAVE” vs one who wants to eat them.) and on the exact opposite end of the spectrum, the nuckelavee has a nest decorated with trophies it’s collected across a decade or more of haunting its neck of the woods: neither a mindless killer nor a powerful old giant with caution borne of self-preservation but an intelligent being who plagued this small region for years out of what seems to be active malice.
over and over and over again, V4 showcases grimm individuality and refutes the huntsmen academy understanding of what these creatures are and why they act as they do. and of course if you watch V1-3 again with the knowledge that the pedagogical lens is limited and inaccurate you’ll notice the small inconsistencies between what is said and what is shown: the ursai yang faces react to her rapid shift in mood with obvious confusion. the deathstalker dodges jaune’s attempts to grab its stinger several times before it either gets bored with the game or isn’t quick enough and rouses itself because it doesn’t like being grabbed. the grimm in mountain glenn know the kids are encamped in the ruin (ruby makes direct eye contact with one through her scope) but ignore their presence in favor of nosing around the ruins. none of the complexity that appears in V4 is really new: it’s just presented plainly, without commentary by an authority figure to elide everything that doesn’t fit inside the clear-cut, morally simplistic huntsmen academy stance that grimm are just an endless horde of soulless evil. and that transition occurs instantly, the minute the narrative leaves the confines of the academy setting.
it’s a neat storytelling choice. hello, welcome to the real world, the grimm are fundamentally just Creatures. they feel pain, and fear. they’re social beings. they’re smart. they aren’t all the same: some of them would prefer not to fight and need to be pushed really far before they’ll resort to violent retaliation and others hunt people for sport. and sometimes they’re not overwhelming existential threats; sometimes they’re just a chronic nuisance bad enough to make you wonder if moving is worth it.

Jaune's Shampoo
Sea Feilong
"DAMMIT, NORA!" Jaune opened his shower door. As he exited, he noticed his body had drastically changed. Using a mixture of his shampoo and experimental goo found at the fiendish Dr. Merlot's laboratory, Nora had unwittingly created a mutagen just to prank her team leader.
Jaune opened the door to his shower and almost immediately fell over. Crossing his arms, he braced for impact with the bathroom floor. Everything felt hot and wet around him, and for some reason he was enjoying this feeling.
Looking back to his legs, he noticed they were not only gone, but completely replaced a long, black, scaley tail, ending with red fins. Towards his lower back, just above his, uh, "cushion" were a pair of red, bat-like wings that, when spread out, were as long as his chest.
With a groan, he crawled his way to the bathroom door, only to find himself unable to stand. He never realized how much he took his legs for granted until now. For now, he would have to hope Nora was standing close by to see her prank. Time to bite the bullet and take whatever mockery she had in store for him.
"Nora?" He called. "Are you out there?"
"Nobody but me, Vomit Boy."
Oh no. Anyone but her.
"Uh, you stuck in there, dude?" Yang asked.
"Uh... Kinda?" He sighed. "Listen, my scroll is next to my bed. It has a Team Leader override in the event of emergencies that-"
"Yeah, yeah, I got it." Yang called back. "Ruby uses it twice a week for her own kinds of..." Yang's voiced faded for a moment before returning. "Before I unlock the door, are you decent?
"Uh..." Jaune looked to his tail. "Kinda?"
"Do you have a towel on?"
Sweat built on Jaune's brow. "No."
"Can you get to one?"
Jaune gulped "No."
"Alright, just..." Yang sighed. "Just don't make this weird."
"I can't promise that."
With a click, the door unlocked and came open. Jaune pushed himself away to give Yang room, and stared into her eyes as they bulged from her sockets. Her hand came up to her mouth.
"Oh my god..." She said. "I thought there was something FISHY going on here."
"Damn it, Yang." Jaune sighed. "Can you help me up?"
"Shore thing, Jaune." Jaune groaned as she lifted him up. "Oof! Looks like I caught a fish this... Huh."
"What?"
"Nothing, you just..." Her nose twitched. "You smell pretty good for a fish-man."
"Uh, what do I smell like?"
"What did the bottle say it was?"
"It was that black bottle with no label." Jaune pointed to the shower.
"You used a bottle of shampoo without looking at the label?"
"Yeah." Jaune answered. "Is that bad?" Yang looked him up and down. Jaune looked to his tail, which twitched as naturally as flexing his toes. "Ah. Right. Point taken."
"So, where should I drop ya?"
"On my bed." Jaune said. "But, uh, could you tell me what I smell like?"
"Well..." Yang game him a cautious sniff. "Kinda like sandalwood, and..." Jaune felt his heart beat a little faster as she got closer. "...vanilla~."
"Uh, Yang? You're getting kinda CLOH-!" Jaune felt the bed rush to meet his backside, but had little time to adjust as something else that was soft pressed his frontside.
"Oh, I can get a lot closer, Lady Killer~." Yang purred as she hovered over him. He gave a pained face and she pulled away. "Uh, you okay?"
"Yeah, just my wings." Yang pulled away and let Jaune roll over. His wings fully extended high into the air, their maroon webbing cast a shade on the wall.
"Dude..." Yang admired with awe, before she snickered. "Did you just pop a wing boner?"
"N-No!" Jaune exclaimed, not looking her in the face.
"Yes, you did!" She laughed. "That is so cute!" Jaune covered his blushing face, feeling so embarrassed by what just happened. "Hey." Jaune peered through his fingers and found Yang giving him a saucy smile in front of him. "What else can you make pop up~?"
Jaune gulped.
Peering through a crack in the door, teal eyes watched with excitement. "See, Ren?! I told you it would work!"

Yang: (blinks boredly at a Beowulf snarling in her face) Yeah, I'm gonna pass, bud. You got this, Blake?
Blake: (yawns) All yours, Weiss.
Weiss: (inspecting her nails) You got this one Ruby?
Ruby: (sighs) I guess so.
Beowulf: What? Hey! What gives? Do I literally mean nothing to you people?
Ruby: Sorry, it's just hard to take a common Beowulf seriously after fighting a human-grimm Hound.
Weiss: And a giant grimm whale.
Blake: And a Leviathan and a Sea Feilong.
Yang: Don't forget about the actual Queen Witch of Grimm, Salem, herself.
Beowulf: ....You know what? Don't worry about it. I'd be bored of myself too if I was in your shoes. (grabs luggage and tips their hat) Sorry to trouble you, ladies.

Blake and Weiss vs Beast and Queen
Tumblr media
This is just a short meta, which wants to focus on 2 specific Mistral fights:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Blake and Sun vs Sea Feilong and Weiss vs Queen Lancer are 2 parallels battles, which foreshadow Blake and Weiss's arcs in Mistral and their climaxes at Haven.
First of all, the set up for the fights is similar. Both Blake and Weiss are on important opposite journeys, as Blake is trying to go back to her family and Weiss is trying to escape hers. However, to reach their destinations they have to overcome a dangerous Grimm: the Sea Feilong and the Queen Lancer.
The choice of such Grimms to stand in Blake and Weiss's path is not accidental and ties with their fairy tale's motif. To be specific, the Sea Feilong is a reference to the Beast, while the Queen Lancer embodies the Evil Queen. In short, they are symbolic of the villains of Blake and Weiss's stories.
BLAKE VS SEA FEILONG
The Sea Feilong is the combination of several dragons of mythology, so of several beasts/monsters and when it appears its shadow covers Blake:
Tumblr media
It is then clearly representative of Blake's state of mind. She is caught in the shadow Adam has spread all around her, to the point she is scared to interact with others:
Captain: Traveling alone? Now, now, no threat here. Just here to chat. Blake: And why is that? Captain: Well, not many people travel by boat on their own. It can be quite a lonely voyage. But I found those that do tend to have the more… interesting stories. Blake: Maybe it's just… better for some people to be alone. Captain: Maybe, but with your paranoia, I think a few friendly faces wouldn't hurt. Blake: Who says I'm paranoid?! Captain: No one, dear, no one. I'll leave you be.
And yet, she can't hope to deal with her shadows alone:
Blake: I need to sort some things out. Sun: Then why not do it with your team? Your friends?
This fight is in the end about this:
Tumblr media
Blake: You're not supposed to be here! Sun: Yeah!? Well, it looks like you can use all the help you can get!
Blake can't kill the Sea Feilong alone, just like she can't defeat Adam nor the White Feng alone. She needs others: her friends, her family and even her community. This is why in the end the Grimm is taken down not even by Blake and Sun working together, but rather by the collective strength of the 2 Hunstmen in training and of the ship crew:
Tumblr media
Other than this, the fight is full of symbols and motifs dear to Blake. Like, for example the twilight, where shadow and light meet:
Tumblr media
(Notice that this fight, the Black Trailer and Blake's appearance in Ruby's volume 4 short all have the twilight in it)
Moreover, there are also other shadows and beasts:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Blake takes away her ribbon, which is there to hide her Faunus Trait. So, even if she is very down, she is starting to face all that has been repressed.
Sun is another beast/shadow following Blake, but once he is uncovered it turns out he is really not threathening, but quite the opposite! He is helpful and a literal "sun" :P So, not all that is hidden is dangerous, not all relationships are scary and not all beasts are evil.
WEISS VS QUEEN LANCER
The Queen Lancer embodies Snowhite's Evil Queen, so it makes sense it attacks Weiss the moment she is escaping Jacques:
Tumblr media
It is a test to see if Weiss can really carve her own path. By this point our Queen is just moving the first steps as her own person and is clearly full of doubts, as her interaction with the pilot shows:
Weiss: It's fine. I… just hope I haven't been a burden. Pilot: You and your money are more than welcome on this ship, kid.
In particular, Weiss should stop letting a corrupted and selfish society choose for her, which is what she struggles with this time, as well:
Weiss: We're going to help them, right? Pilot: What? No. I'm trying to avoid them. Weiss: But… they'll die. Pilot: Look, if we picked up their transmission, I'm sure someone else did, too. Besides, this is a cargo ship. She's not much good in a fight. I just wanna finish this job and get home. Sorry, kid. My ship, my rules.
The moment they hear the request for help, Weiss wants to answer it, but the pilot refuses. In a sense, this is the opposite of what happens in Blake' fight. There, the people come together against a common enemy, while here people selfishly decide to only think about themselves. Someone else will do the right thing. Someone else will answer the call.
The result is that when the pilot himself is the one in need for help, nobody comes to the rescue. This is when Weiss takes charge:
Pilot: What are you doing? Weiss: What we should've done in the first place!
Tumblr media
She faces the Lancers with the pilot's help and manages to defeat them. Then, the final boss arrives and Weiss is forced to go all out:
Tumblr media
She symbolically sacrifices the Dust Cargo, just like she is stepping into a new unknown life with no privilege. And yet, even that is not enough. This is because the question the narrative asks Weiss is: "Who are you without your Family name?". This is Weiss's answer:
Tumblr media
She is a Brave Knight who trusts her heart and succeeds at slaying the Evil Queen. And yet, the Knight breaks too and the Princess falls:
Tumblr media
Weiss finds herself asking for help, but the world is a very cruel place:
Weiss: Help… please.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Branwen Tribe kidnaps Weiss for ransom. Weiss's journey to become her own person is still not over and she still has to struggle against a cold and selfish society. Both in Atlas and in Mistral. And yet, she has started to trust her heart:
Tumblr media
A BEAUTY AND A QUEEN AT HAVEN
The Battle of Haven is where Blake and Weiss's struggle throughout the Mistral arc gives fruit. On the one hand Blake unites the Menagerie Faunus against the White Feng and she herself faces Adam. On the other hand Weiss finds a strong support system, which accepts her for who she is and shines by fighting by their side.
Interestingly, their 2 big moments call back to elements found in the fights above.
Blake doesn't act alone, but has a whole movement supporting her:
Tumblr media
It is also telling and a nice nod that they are able to bring all the Faunus to Haven thanks to the captain's help:
Kali: We'll need transportation too. For everyone. Blake: I think I know a ship captain who owes us a favor.
Weiss is able to summon the Queen Lancer to fight by her side:
Tumblr media
She has found her corner of warm world, which supports her in doing the right thing. She now knows who she is: she is both a Queen and a Lancer.
This is a nice top off for Blake and Weiss's parallel journeys, which is made even more powerful by them clearly being connected symbolically.
On the one hand Weiss's Lancer breaks the wall and reunites Blake with her team:
Tumblr media
On the other hand when Weiss's Lancer is destroyed, Blake is quick to take its place in the fight:
Tumblr media
If you open up to others and follow your heart, more people willing to do the right thing will come and support you. Blake and Weiss learn this lesson by freeing themselves from abuse and by facing their inner demons. As a result they bloom in 2 queen lancers and in 2 beauiful and brave beasts.

Drabble - The Hero of Argus
Tumblr media
----------
"Oh that?"
Tumblr media
"It was a day unlike any other. The year? 57 PW. The Faunus Rights Revolution had been over for a decade by that point. The scars were healing all across Remnant. It was a time of peace. A time of prosperity. No one could have anticipated what would come for the city of Argus, located on Mistral's northern coast.
Now, Argus has always occupied a strange diplomatic gray area between Mistral and Atlas. Nominally, it's Mistrali territory. But it holds an Atlesian military base and culturally speaking, one could make the argument that it's closer to Atlas than Mistral. Which is something Atlas likes to take advantage of.
Rumor has it that Atlas was testing out some special, particularly destructive weaponry off the coast of Argus. With Atlas gone, I suppose we'll never really know the details but... they woke something. Out from beneath the waves it rose slowly. Methodically. Dangerously.
A great reptilian beast, larger than most skyscrapers. Black as night and covered in bone-like armor, as most Grimm are. Like a great, lumbering bear, but conforming itself like some grandiose, ancient lizard of old.
The Leviathan.
The beast had been angered by the weapon testing, either injured by it or incensed that its habitat had been disturbed. And, like all Grimm, it was beckoned towards the nearest human settlement. To exact its vengeance upon those that had a soul.
It turned towards the city of Argus, and began to march.
No one was prepared.
It rose out of the waves like some great herald of doom. As it entered the coastal waters of Mistral's Second City, it tore through the great bridge that made the city famous. See, Argus has walls surrounding it - but at the time, they only had it on land. The city was wholly unequipped for an aquatic attack. And this was no mere Sea Feilong, dangerous as those are! This was a beast out of the nightmares of the most seasoned huntsman!
And it began to attack.
Entire swathes of the city were destroyed within the hour. Neighborhoods that had stood since the founding half a century earlier? Erased from existence. Crushed beneath the Leviathan's sheer mass, like it was stepping on an anthill.
The Atlesian military did its best to repel the beast. But they were still using mid-century weaponry. Nothing like the railguns or dust-powered laser cannons they have now. Well, had. Still! Soldiers were crushed. Planes swatted aside. Artillery and missiles brushed off like they meant nothing!
Fun fact - the current Atlesian base in Argus was built in 58 PW. That's because the old one got destroyed in its entirety during this attack.
And then, like it had gotten BORED, the Leviathan retreated and slunk back beneath the waves.
Argus was left to recover, to pick up the pieces. But no one believed this was the end. No one knew WHY the great beast fell back, but everyone knew that it would be back. Grimm did not just RETREAT on the verge of victory. Except, perhaps, to further savor their meal. To play with their food.
So began the great defense of Argus. Communications were down all across the city, destroyed in the beast's rampage. There would be no help coming. Not from Atlas, not from Mistral. It would be up to Argus and Argus alone to defend itself. As if it could. Now, it’s true, Argus was home to Sanctum Academy, Mistral’s preparatory school for huntsmen and huntresses before applying for one of the Big 4 academies. But these were children. Less than even huntsmen-in-training. They would be no help.
And yet, in a roundabout way, Sanctum Academy would prove to be Argus’ salvation. Because, the morning after the initial attack, a team of freshly graduated huntsmen showed up at the gates of Argus. This team were intending to visit Sanctum and the job board located there, intending to pick their next mission.
And on this team was one Willow Schnee.
White of hair and pale as freshly fallen snow, garbed in the telltale colors of her illustrious house, no one would have blamed the young heiress for choosing a life of luxury. Of ease and comfort. And make no mistake, the woman has a taste for it, I can promise you that. But! She chose to become a huntress anyway. To work hard for her place in the world at that young age, like her father before her. So, at 21 years old, having just graduated from Atlas Academy a scant few months beforehand, Willow Schnee entered the city of Argus for the first time.
She was horrified by the destruction, as anyone would be. To think that a single Grimm had done all of this! But the ice princess, the once and future hero and matriarch, knew that she had a duty to the survivors, to the city. So she stayed. She and her team introduced themselves to the remaining forces of the Atlesian military, who knew that this was the only help they would be getting. Four, freshly graduated huntsmen. It would have to be enough.
Night fell. A storm rolled in from the sea. The city was dark, for most of the power had been taken out during the first attack. Even fires and candlelight were put out, for fear of drawing the beast’s attention. A wise precaution. For, before the clock struck midnight, a deafening roar like a demon from hell came from over the horizon.
The Leviathan had returned.
The only light in the entire city came from the port docks. A shimmering, ethereal Boarbatusk – white, instead of black – shone like a beacon to the entire city, and even to the Leviathan itself. And there, saddled on it like the ghostly Grimm was some great beast of war, sat Willow Schnee – saber in hand.
Slowly, the massive form of the Leviathan peeked over the horizon – trudging along the bottom of the ocean, splitting the waves like a knife. Even with half of it buried beneath the dark waters of the bay, each step was like an earthquake. But its challenger did not back down, did not move an inch. Eventually, the Leviathan reached the docks. It towered over all, its head reaching into the heavens, and it leered down at the bright, shining light offending eyes that were used to the deep depths of the sea.
The Leviathan opened its maw, large enough to eat countless people in a single bite, and roared in defiance – no doubt bursting the ear drums of anyone unlucky enough to not be wearing protection. Willow Schnee responded simply. She lifted her sword and shot out a shard of ice from its chambers of dust. The ice, the size of a boulder yet as sharp as the sword she carried, struck true. It embedded itself in the roof of the Leviathan’s still open maw.
No doubt, to the Leviathan it was the equivalent of a splinter, but as anyone can attest a splinter is deceptively painful despite its size. The beast roared in pain, and the battle began.
Willow CHARGED at the Leviathan, the summoned Boarbatusk she’d summoned running along the waves as if it were on land! In reality, Willow was using her semblance to conjure footholds of ice with every step that her steed took. Then, as one, the remaining functioning artillery of Argus fired – striking the beast while it was distracted with the ant that offended it so! The Leviathan once more roared in pain, and this did everything to boost the morale of the defenders. The beast could feel pain! The beast could be hurt! And if it could be hurt, it could die!
The sky LIT UP, both due to the flashes of lightning the storm conjured and the pounding of artillery fire upon the Leviathan! But in the end, these were just distractions. It had already been proven that the beast couldn’t be felled by the firepower available to the military. But the sheer force of the barrage forced the Leviathan to defend itself.
In a show of power unforeseen by the defenders, the Leviathan revealed its trump card. A low hum filled the air, even as the future Hero of Argus was slashing at the beast’s heels in an attempt to bring it low. It built, and built, and soon the beast itself was becoming yet another light in the stormy night. Some prescient commander ordered his troops to get down for cover, but it would do them no good.
FIRE shot from the Leviathan’s fanged mouth. With the intensity of a blowtorch, and all the power of the bombs that had been dropped on it that caused this entire disaster. A blinding flash of light filled the sky, blinding those who made the foolish mistake of staring directly at the blast. It was like the sun had risen, hours and hours too soon. In an instant, the entire Atlesian military base was VAPORIZED, all hands taken with it. There were no survivors.
A deafening silence filled the city as the Leviathan’s firebreath ceased – the only sounds coming from the pounding waves and the din of the rain. For a long moment, not even thunder rumbled across the sky. Then the beast leaned back and let out a bellowing roar of victory.
An utterly hubristic gesture that shows the folly of the Grimm. One must be careful to not declare their win before all of the combatants are down.
For the sting of a Lancer immediately took out one of the beast’s eyes.
All the while the Leviathan had been preparing its decisive blow, Willow Schnee had been herself preparing. Without dismissing her Boarbatusk, and directing it to continue harrying the Leviathan’s calves, she had summoned yet another vanquished beast – this time, a Lancer Queen. She’d hopped onto the back of the great wasp Grimm and launched into the sky. Willow had been smart to avoid the Leviathan’s attention while it charged its destructive blast. But now that the beast was finished and reveling in the death it caused, only then did Willow strike. And strike she did! The Leviathan did not even realize what was coming until the stinger of the Lancer pierced its eye!
The Leviathan roared in pain! But the damage was done. The beast was now blinded in one eye! And others were soon to follow, for Willow conjured up more great shards of ice to pierce the other two eyes on that side of the Leviathan! Utterly unable to see an entire side, such was the nature of its vision and the placement of the eyeholes in its skull.
The webbed paws of the beast, larger than some apartment buildings, began to swing wildly! Trying to knock the pesky insect that wounded it so out of the sky! The chase was on. On her Lancer, Willow Schnee dodged and weaved, doing everything in her power to avoid getting knocked off her flying steed. It was much like trying to swat an annoying fly out of your personal space, and much like that, it only takes one lucky hit to do so.
Eventually, the great beast did indeed get lucky. Those massive, clawed paws clipped the very edges of the Lancer Queen – and that was it. The summon disintegrated on contact, sending Willow Schnee tumbling out of the air and into the sea. The summoned Boarbatusk did its best to reach and catch its master, and it just barely managed the feat before Willow’s body collided with it – breaking her fall some but also breaking her hold on the creature, and it vanished as Willow Schnee herself vanished beneath the waves.
It had been the first and only blow Willow had taken during the fight. But when dealing with a monster like the Leviathan, it was enough.
For a long moment, it seemed like the last champion of Argus had fallen to their doom. That the Schnee heiress had perished before her life had truly begun. Then a shock of white peeked out from beneath the waves. There floated Willow Schnee. Battered. Damaged. But still holding on, albeit, struggling against the stormy sea. Distant observers noted the telltale flicker of white light – her aura. A single blow, a mere glancing blow at that, was enough to take it from full to nearly broken. She would not survive another.
And unfortunately for her, she had fallen on the Leviathan’s good side. It quickly noticed that its foe had survived her fall. The great beast then decided that, well, there’s no kill quite like overkill.
A telltale hum, one that haunts the nightmares of survivors, filled the frigid air once more. The spines on the beast’s back lit up one by one as the Leviathan charged its ultimate attack. And there floated Willow Schnee, utterly defenseless against the great God of the Sea.
The fire at the back of the Leviathan’s throat grew and grew until, finally, it was let loose upon its single human opponent. It was not prepared for what happened next. For a potent beam of lightning shot, not from the sky, but from beneath the waves! This blast met the Leviathan’s firebreath and held it at bay! Then, out of the waves, rose Willow Schnee! And beneath her heels was the horned, regal head of a summoned Sea Feilong!
The God and the Dragon battled for supremacy, their beams clashing in a light show that we will never see its like again!
But Willow Schnee was wise. The Sea Feilong held its own, but it would not do so forever. The Leviathan’s firebreath was just too strong. But that was fine. The Sea Feilong’s lightning breath was just a delaying action! Without so much as pausing its defense, the dragon unfurled its wings and leapt into the sky with Willow gripping its sleek, wet horns for dear life! Not once did its lighting cease battle the Leviathan’s fire, instead causing the great beast to turn and follow the dragon, directing the clashing beams out to sea rather than towards the city.
Just as planned.
Suddenly, the Sea Feilong shut its mouth and DOVE out of the way, the Leviathan’s fire breath shooting out into the night sky and parting the very storm clouds themselves! Once more, another sun momentarily filled the night sky and the storm itself dissipated, the clouds ceasing to exist. Such was the power of the Leviathan’s firebreath and the resulting shockwave.
The Leviathan lumbered. Clearly, using its ultimate attack so many times in a row, and for so long at that, took a bit out of it. And in that moment of weakness, Willow Schnee struck.
The Sea Feilong dove towards the Leviathan and wrapped its long, serpentine length around the great beast’s gilled neck! Like a python, it began choking the very life out of the great beast, bringing a God itself to heel! The Leviathan clawed and scratched at the dragon, but its massive clawed paws were more for swimming than grabbing. Making matters worse, the way the Sea Feilong had wrapped itself around its victim was deliberate. All at the behest of its master, the dragon had wrapped around the Leviathan such that the dragon’s head would line right up with the Leviathan’s pierced and bleeding eyeholes.
The Sea Feilong charged its lighting once more. And Willow Schnee raised her saber just as she had in the beginning of the battle.
The dragon’s lightning breath PIERCED right through the Leviathan’s skull like a knife through butter. After but a moment’s hesitation as it burrowed through the beast, the blast of lighting came out the other side and struck the waves at an angle, turning the sea utterly deadly until the attack stopped. The Leviathan twitched and shuddered, lightning pouring down its insides, and its maw remained opened in a muted scream.
Then the lightning stopped.
There was a beat. A pause that lasted but a moment but must have felt like an eternity. And then the great beast, the God of the Sea, the Leviathan… began to disintegrate. Like all Grimm do upon death.
The ghostly Sea Feilong, summon of Willow Schnee, began to flicker as well. Its master’s aura had run out. The vanquishing dragon flew towards the ports of Argus with all haste. But fate was smiling upon the hero of the hour. For the dragon only dissipated as it laid its head down on the closest dock.
And there laid Willow Schnee.
Battered. Most certainly broken in places. Utterly exhausted. But victorious.
And she laid there for a while, not having the energy to move. The ice princess stuck laying on the wet, dirty dock that smelled of fish – which had begun to float to the surface of the bay, boiled by firebreath and electrocuted by lightningbreath – until the survivors began to peek out of the rubble. Slowly they crept towards Willow, the one that saved them all. Many of them doubted if she was even still alive. But as they approached her it became clear that she was.
Willow Schnee was alive, and she had saved Argus.
Willow looked at the survivors and choked out a single sentence.
“I could really use a glass of wine right about now.”
A resounding cheer rose up from all of Argus! The people hoisted the battered, soaked form of Willow Schnee up on their arms and gleefully chanted one thing:
“The Hero of Argus! The Hero of Argus!”
Willow Schnee would only serve as a huntress for one year, effectively retiring once she married and gave birth to her first child. But it was a year etched in legend. To this day, there is a statue of Willow at the Argus docks. And, in the main hall of Sanctum Academy, there is a large mural of the battle. Depicting Willow atop her Boarbatusk, raising her saber and pointing it at the Leviathan that almost laid that great city low.
I walked past that mural every day while I was at Sanctum.”

Postmortem Monstra thought (RIP, F, et al): should we assume physeter grimm just get That Large now & then, or was she a totally-from-scratch Salem custom?
i Want to Believe that salem in the midst of improvising her plan to deliver a siege to atlas took a walk to mull the question of transportation, just happened to come across a dead beached whale, and went “…i can work with that.”
just marinate it in a grimm pool for a month or two, shove in enough gravity dust to levitate a dreadnought, and start carving! :)
because in the absence of textual evidence i like to go for the funniest answer and i think grimming the corpse of an actual whale is funny. she lugs it back home and emerald glances out the window and whispers WHAT THE FUCK to herself for the nth time. why is she like this. what does she even need that FOR. etc.
more generally i do think grimm can just grow to tremendous size if they live long enough, and reason dictates that marine grimm must get quite a bit larger on average because 1. water is a far more forgiving environment for VERY LARGE than air, hence the difference in size between say whales and elephants, and 2. living in the ocean is safer if you’re a grimm because huntsmen have a much narrower window of opportunity to Get You.
but monstra feels… not like a natural grimm. like, compare the leviathan or the sea feilong—i think Those are ordinary grimm who lived long enough to get very big, without any interference by salem, and while they’re not as incomprehensibly huge as monstra they’re the nearest available comparison. and they’re not… like… gross, the way monstra is. monstra is rotting and slimy and has this pinkish-purple flesh on the inside that does not look at all like any other grimm we’ve seen, which is what tilts me toward “this is something she grimmed” vs “this is a bespoke grimm she designed from scratch like the seers.”

Now for something a little more on the fantasy side of things...
Summer wasn't dead. She has been a mermaid all along, and simply went back to her home in the seas.
(Probably not what you were thinking, but enjoy)
Ruby froze in shock as she felt seawater splash across her body after being thrown off the boat. As she sank beneath the waves, she wasnt sure when she had quit holding her breath. Maybe it was a few seconds after being pushed far enough into the water that she couldnt swim back, maybe it was when she first went under. Either way, all she could do was watch as her friends and the grimm they were fighting drifted away. All she could do was close her eyes and relax her body as she felt the currents pull her deeper into the sea.
“Its not your time yet, Petal. You still have your friends you need to go home to. Please, swim back to them.”
Ruby opened her eyes as she felt a few fingers run through her hair, the flick of a tail against her legs, and words as clear as if they were being carried through the water. She slowly turned herself to try to catch a glimpse of who was around, only to see shadows around her. Without another thought, she started to swim to the surface. Once again, she felt a pair of hands on her, helping her as she caught a glimpse of her mother’s eyes behind her.
“I know you’ll come back home to me again, Ruby.”
Ruby paused as she turned around and watched as her mother swam down into the depths of the sea, her eyes watching as her mother’s red and black scaled tail started to disappear into the shadows. She took a breath, feeling the water flow through her lungs without pain and started to swim to the surface once more. Once she broke the surface of the water, she coughed as she felt the salty air rush into her with a deep, gasping breath.
“Yang!” Weiss called out. “She’s over there!”
Ruby watched as the boat started to turn around as her own body started to succumb to exhaustion and she leaned back in the water to float. It wasnt long until she heard a splash near her and felt Yang pull her close while holding onto a rope.
Yang pulled on the rope and called out to the rest of the team. “I’ve got her! Pull us up!”
“I know we shouldnt have fought that grimm-”
“We can talk about that later. Right now, we need to get you back onto the boat and checked out.”
Ruby sighed and nodded, her eyes catching one more glimpse of her mother as she felt herself getting pulled out of the water and hauled up onto the boat. Once she felt the damp deck of the boat, she sat up to catch her breath. “Thanks.”
“Please dont scare us like that again,” Weiss said as she knelt down to help support Ruby. “We thought we lost you after the sea feilong was driven away.”
“It wasnt intentional. Just… lost my footing when it rammed into us.”
“We know and we’re glad you’re okay. Though, we should get you looked at. Your skin feels dry.”
Ruby paused for a moment and glanced at her arm, watching a few silver scales reflect the light from the sunset. She quickly pulled a towel to her and started to dry off, standing up and wobbling as she regained her footing. “I’m fine, saltwater just makes my skin feel irritated is all. Nothing to worry about.”
Weiss sighed and followed Ruby, helping keep her supported as she walked below deck to her quarters. “Then at least rest for a bit before we get back to shore. You were missing for hours and we dont know how long you were underwater or what happened after you fell off the boat. That sea feilong might not have been the only grimm out there and we’ll still want to get you checked out so we can make sure that you’re not hurt-”
“And I told you I’m fine.” Ruby smiled a bit and leaned into Weiss with a content sigh. “I’ll take it easy, but I dont need to get checked out yet. Nothing’s broken, nothing hurts, I only need to get a few thoughts together about what I saw down there.”
“What you saw?” Weiss asked.
“I… I saw my mom. I think she saved me, but… I need some time to clear my head to make sure I wasnt seeing things.”
“And if you were?”
Ruby shrugged and sat down on her cot. “Then its nothing to worry about, right? Everyone sees something at sea, its why we have stories of creatures besides grimm that live in the depths.”
“Alright. I’ll haveBlake and Yang write up the mission report for Ozpin while you rest.” Weiss started to make her way back up top and paused on the stairs. “And you’re sure this is nothing, right?”
“Of course I’m sure,” Ruby answered as she looked over her arm once more, gently running a finger over the scales as they disappeared once they dried. “Give me some time to figure out what happened, then I’ll get looked at. I… I think some rest will do me good. And maybe a break from huntressing.” She sighed and leaned back as she listened to Weiss walk up the stairs, staring at the ceiling above her. “And I’ll need to get some answers from dad.”

So if I am correct right now we know about Sui siblings
1 - Combat Arts(Chongue)
2 - Pottery(Evil brother)
3 - Poetry(Ling)
4 - Law( Unknown sister)
5 - Calligraphy (Jie, somehow dead)
6
7
8
9 - Metallurgy (Nian)
10 -
11 - Art(Dusk)
12 - Culinary(Unknown brother)
We also know known Agriculture(Shu) and Medicine(Unknown brother)
So we left with two siblings whose sphere we don't know, and do you have ideas what could it be?
Also this person from new online-event(?) seems to carry sewing tools, could it be another brother?
You've opened a can of worms with this so I hope you're ready lol that said, I've lots of thoughts on it and I'd make it it's own post but I'm not that knowledgeable about Chinese culture (apologies if I get anything wrong) so I'm not confident in it.
That said, these are the thoughts I have.
So yeah, I think that the only one you're wrong about is 4 since the Law Sister is only implied to be younger than the Second Brother iirc and referred to in the same way as Dusk:
Tumblr media
But for my own musings I've been basing my theories off of this image:
Tumblr media
And I and I believe others have noticed a pattern with the Sui that we've been getting, which is that so far the only playable Sui have been Odd numbered.
Chongyue | 3. Ling | 9. Nian | 11. Dusk
While 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 are all not yet playable. The only Odds that aren't are Jie the 5th and then the 7th.
Seventh:
Tumblr media
So, I think this is how they're ordered (for instance Nian is 9 so top row is accurate I do so believe) and if we look at the close up of 7:
Tumblr media
There's quite a bit going on but two things is 1. There's a plant in their background, likely meaning either their art or perhaps job is related to gardening. And 2. Their hair is likely light, as the only other Sui with light hair in this image is Nian who also has white hair:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As this pv came out alongside Chongyue's event, they may have already known what Shu would look like (notice that all but the Second Brother of the siblings to the left who are Evens are practically all silhouettes) they may have known to design the 7th like that.
I also looked into Chinese numerology, which'll come up a bit for others, particular for the other Sui sibling in this event but for Seventh this is what I've found and points towards Shu being the 7th:
So the number seven in Chinese: 七 is pronounced like: Qi, which is one thing but there's a surprising amount of words which when pronounced sound like Qi and a lot of them seem to fit with Shu.
The most important is Qi itself which is a vital force or life energy that humans, animals and even plants have. It's likely what allows Shu to be so good at agriculture and in the animated pv and Spring Festival animation, how she brings plants back to life and makes them flourish:
Tumblr media
Another word that sound like Qi is "Even" which I think is hilarious actually relevant because as said before, so far we've only gotten Odd Sui besides the 7th and 5th siblings. I of course theorize that Shu is the 7th but Jie, the 5th, is missing and if she is alive I think it'd be too big of a reveal to happen in the next event. So Shu being the 7th, Qi, Even,
Well it'd just be fun.
There's another one that it can mean, which is: Rise. My main point about this is in regards to what types of Dragons Shu is inspired by, though I'm just taking this as a chance to talk about my Shu Dragon Theory.
So, the reason it's relevant is because it's possible that the Sui siblings could be inspired by different dragons from China. I think Nian being the Nian is the most obvious but like Dusk is based on a variation of it that appears at dusk, maybe with a bit of Shen a sea creature that makes mirages. Ling could be a Panlong "Coiling Dragon" which is a lake dragon also. And Chongyue, being the most like the full Sui being the Dragon King.
For Shu, I'm thinking about Tengshe "Rising/Soaring Snake) and Feilong (Flying Dragon) because of how it's depicted in the event's image, the pv and maybe E2:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So from these, it's a flying dragon particularly among/made of clouds. I think in the top right of her E2 it appears like clouds also.
To me this very much appears like the Tengshe and Feilong. The Tengshe being a wingless dragon capable of flight and the Feilong known for flying among the clouds. There's also the "rising" part of the Tengshe's name.
Which about the Tengshe in particular, there's also the Te "Plant Pest" which is one of various insects like Lotus who eat plants and farmers had problems dealing with. The reason I mention this being:
Tumblr media
The boss.
Also the enemies.
The entire event mechanics revolve around farming, such as contaminated water and of course: pests. With mice and then those rods that appear like locusts being frequent.
The boss not only makes me think that the depiction of the dragon present in the event image and pv is somewhat represented in the event's story but I think that this boss is also representative of Shu herself in some capacity.
Maybe we're seeing something like how Chongyue sealed his Feranmut power within a sword and she did the same with the cube in the pv and this is what's inside of it and a part of her or what but I don't think it's the second Sui for instance.
The reason for this being that while they share much of the same colours, there a theme with the Sui that we get one who has a light colour palette then one with a darker (Nian > Dusk > Ling > Chongyue > Shu). And this dragon being white appears would fit her moreso than her brother.
So she would be the Tengshe but this boss is the Te. Which I find fun.
Also, there's this practice called Cloud Seeding wherein substances are released into clouds to make it rain. It's used for farming and the country that does this the most is China.
So you have this dragon in the event that's depicted either in or made from clouds, for this agricultural dragon that's depicted later in the event working with the pests threatening the land.
It feels fitting and with her dragon likely being one known for flying and associated with the sky, it feels possible it's tied to "Rise" "Qi" though I also just wanted to talk about this theory.
Though one last thing is there's a Shu animation added into the Spring Festival livestream that depicts Shu rising into the sky and making where she flies flourish with greenery and it's very reminiscent of a dragon and possibly relevant to what they're doing with this.
Anyway. I have one last point to make with Shu and I'm segueing into the Brother who's also being introduced in this event or who I believe will be:
The Fourth Sibling
Tumblr media
Here is the second Sui introduced in the latest Sui event. We know very little about him besides the fact that he's a shopkeeper in the event. He appears in the event image and the pv for the event.
Also that the item in his left hand appears to be a weaving shuttle which I believe is very likely. For instance it's possible that they're introducing a second Sui alongside Shu because of the connection between agriculture and textiles in real life or the idiom: 男耕女织 | Nán gēng nǚ zhī | Men farm women weaves. That's supposedly rather famous.
But I think there's another thing that Shu and this Brother may represent that are closely linked and that is life and death.
Here's where 4 comes into play.
See as is quite famous: the number four is considered the unluckiest number in China and that's because in Chinese it sounds like Death as they both sound like Si.
So:
Shu > Seventh > Qi > Vital Force
Him > Fourth > Si > Death
But that's not all I have, see to some people in China, particularly with other dialects the number four sounds different and has other connotations such as in Teochew where it's quite lucky because it sounds like the word for silk...
Yes... silk.
I just learnt about that and I'm taking it as a point and! If he's ever revealed to have a Teochew dialect, now you know why. In fact if his name ends up as Zhi it's because that's the word for weaving.
But my other point and what got me on this train in the first place is because I looked up whether sewing is considered bad luck, because with how widespread four being unlucky is, I thought that'd be a good place to look.
And needlework is considered bad luck to do on new years supposedly. From what I gather anything that can make you bleed, such as scissors are considered bad luck and those similarly can lead to arguments with friends and family. And remember the "men farms, women weave" ? Well needlework being unlucky may be connected to that as it's thought needlework in the new year meant a lot of it throughout the year for women.
I also think it's fitting that if we're to start having even Sui operators starting from new year that the most famous number would be the first one we see or become an integral role going forwards if not.
In conclusion:
Chongyue | Warfare
Second Brother | Pottery
Ling | Poetry
Unknown Sui from this event | Weaving
Jie | Caligraphy
Unknown
Shu | Gardening
Unkown | Music
Nian | Metallurgy
Unknown | Dance
Dusk | Painting
Unknown | Cooking
As for which are the Doctor brother and the Law Sister... Maybe the Eighth is the Doctor Brother?
Looks at these: 樂 藥
The first character is associated with music while the second one is with medicine. From what I can understand, the character for music is also for happiness and the bit at the top for medicine represents herbs.
I'm also seeing a connection between Chinese philosophy with it's five elements, five major bodily organs and the five note Chinese pentatonic scale and how music can be used with these for healing.
Though I'm not finding much on these to have much confidence on it.
That said, the Eight in Chinese sounds a bit like the Chinese word for prosper and is considered the luckiest number and synonymous with happiness which if the reason that the Eighth sibling is a musician is because Eight > Happiness > 樂 as happiness > 樂 as music.
I wouldn't be surprised then if they tie prosperity not only to happiness but one's own health and therefor medicine as well.
Which idk how sound all that is but there's my Doctor Brother theory.
Law Sister I don't know where to begin. Like by my theory she'd either be 6 or 10 but it's difficult to narrow it down to just one of them.
But let's see! The first of Feb! Am I going to be right about Shu and the unknown brother?

Lol, no not really. To be honest, it's actually more that I wanted to see more of Jess than I do of Jaune. Since there's not a lot of DC media that does justice to the character. I'm not normally that big on Jaune either. But this year has actually been the most I've been invested in him. The Rusted Knight thing and the teamup with Jess were both surprisingly good ideas. And while I was a little annoyed at the aging being undone at the end of Volume 9, I thought maybe that could still result in some neat interactions if mentally he feels much older than he physically is.
Gotcha! I don't really know Jess/this Green Lantern outside of these crossovers, but I did like what I've seen of her. I'm very grateful to her for saving Blake from being eaten by a Sea Feilong in this part, and she ultimately saved the day in part 1.
The moments she had with Jaune in part 1 were sweet, I think they helped each other quite a bit. And yes, Jaune at least could've been helped through some issues he undoubtedly has after decades as the Rusted Knight. It also could've been kinda funny if Jess commented on being older than him now.
Jaune: "Only on the outside."
Jess: "Huh?"
Jaune: thousand yard stare
Jaune: "It's a long story."
Jess: "Tell me when we get a moment to sit down. At least the short version."
Agreed that it could've been neat to have something like that. Although I am glad we did get Jess asking after him.
It did feel like a bit of a cop out to have Jaune de-aged at the end of Volume 9, but it did seem like it should be within the Blacksmith's power. And his joy at getting his young face back was cute. Even if Weiss might be disappointed that he's no longer mature.

Alright RWBY: Amity Lore Dump time.
Grimm
Grimm are creatures of pure death and destruction. The Brother of Creation made humans, and the Brother of Destruction responded with the Grimm. Mockeries of his brother’s animals, taking many forms.
Ursa (Bears)
Beowulves (Wolves)
Nevermores (Ravens)
Death Stalkers (Scorpions)
Creeps (Salamanders)
Taijitu (Snakes)
Blindworms (Worms)
Lancers (Wasps)
Imps (Humanoids)
Geists (Ghosts)
Goliaths (Elephants)
Sabers (Saber Tooth Tigers)
Boarbatusks (Boars)
Ravagers (Bats)
Sulfer (Silverfish)

Nuckelavee (Centaur)
Leviathan (Spinosaur)
Sea Feilong (Sea Serpent)
Monstra (Whale)
Hound (Dog)
Seer (Squids)
Ziraph (Giraffes)
The Chill.
While most of these Grimm are described as plural, some there only exist one of.
Wyvern, Nuckelavee, Leviathan, Sea Feilong, Monstra, Hound, and The Chill.
Some can even get older, growing more bones and adjusting their behavior to adapt the resistances of humans.
Ursa -> Ursa Major
Beowulf -> Alpha Beowulf
Nevermores, Death Stalkers, and Creeps all keep their names
Taijitu -> King Taijitu
Blindworm -> Bloodworm
Lancer -> Queen Lancer
Imp -> Apathy
Geist -> Arma / Petra Gigas
Goliath -> Megoliath
Griffin -> Manticore
Seer -> Tempest
Born from Grimm Pools, a black tar like substance that eats away at human flesh and drives those who inhale it’s gasses insane.
Once slain, a Grimm will disintegrate into ash, staining and wilting anything it touches. Only their bones remain.
And that’s the basics on how Grimm work.
If you want to learn more about the Grimm or my AU as a whole, my Ask is open!

So the plot of dc/rwby so far seems to be the Grimm are invading DC Earth.
Now, the Grimm killing off DC humanity is obviously not going to happen. They can’t even destroy Remnant humanity. But they can probably do a lot of damage. So let’s look at a scenario.
8 Grimm pools have appeared on DC Earth. Every hour they spawn a new Grimm. At midnight every day they spawn a strong Grimm like an Alpha Beowulf. Once every week they spawn a mega Grimm like a Sea Feilong, Goliath or Nuckelavee.
There is a portal on every continent and one in the Pacific Ocean. In one year the pools will collapse and no longer produce Grimm. If however the Grimm destroy over 50% of DC Earth Salem/the God of Darkness will notice and establish permanent Grimm pools.
This is just a scenario I made up by the way. I don’t know the full plot of DC/RWBY. Have fun!
