The third outfit Miss Fisher wears in “Blood and Circuses” (Season 1, Episode 11) is her first undercover ensemble at the circus, comprising of a large trenchcoat over the black sequinned circus costume.
Her khaki (the Hindi word for ‘dust’) double-breasted knee-length trenchcoat looks to be a men’s version, with oversized sleeves and shoulders. Appropriate to the 1920′s style, trenchcoats were claimed to be invented by two competing British luxury clothing manufacturers, Burberry and Aquascutum.
Thomas Burberry developed gabardine, a tightly woven, water-repellent cloth in 1879, which was later used for the forerunner of the trench coat, the Tielocken, in the Boer War during 1895. London's Aquascutum, claims to use patented waterproof wool designs, which later formed the basis for the trench coat, as early as the 1850s in the Crimean War.
Officers used the trenchcoat in the First World War, with the design modified to include shoulder straps to attach epaulets or other rank insignia, and D-rings along the belt to hang map cases, swords, and other equipment. It also has straps that could be tightened along the cuffs to prevent rain from running into the sleeves, and buttoned flaps by the pockets.
We can just see the inside lining when Phryne opens the coat, while not the signature Burberry plaid, the warm cotton pattern of red and black plaid is very similar.
