more 2015 vintage 3D work! This class project was fun-- we had to design, model, and texture some props and modular environment parts to create a sci-fi interior. Mine came out pretty busy, but ehh I had to pull this together in a week so you get what you get lol. I'm still proud of the props and the modular parts and very sad I didn't save out the 3D scene or its component parts at all (at least not anywhere I've found yet). I think I crammed some nice details into this environment-- I'm fond of that chunky computer terminal thing especially. It's hard to see, but I put a grunged-up "Hang In There!" kitten poster on it, to help motivate whatever stressed-out employees work in this place.

This was also the project where I learned how to make emissive textures! I went absolutely bananas with them. As was my right.

Next to all three of them is Diaf, an umblan and the tallest of the group. She is slug-like, with no distinct head. She does have a horn, or maybe a stalk, that she holds upright to reach a height of nearly ten feet. But at the shoulder she’s like. 5 foot. To the right is Clatter, a zoronxie alien. She’s bipedal and raptor-like with a long tail, wings, and a segmented neck. She stands at around 4 feet tall. Finally is Hán Huì Qún, a human. She stands at around 5 foot and 6 inches tall. End ID.

Finally decided to do a lineup of most of the species that’ll feature on the Little Bird. Each originating from different planets with vastly different biology and cultures, they’ll tell you they have nothing in common.

Which isn’t really true, of course. The Little Bird is made for an oxygenated environment- there are a lot more sapient aliens in this setting, but many of them physically cannot live on the ship. So the crew all has to be at least similar enough to live in the same atmosphere. :)

i love TAing. some parts of it are stressful but running office hours and just getting to talk through a concept with the students until we've identified the source of their confusion and successfully resolved it is so satisfying and fun.

#and i know a bunch of fun facts to throw in that they appear to find genuinely fun! #e.g. 'worms are one of the only commonly studied multicellular organisms that we can freeze' #which is always a real hit. #a couple of them asked me to explain my research to them today??? #and they said they thought it sounded 'cool' and 'sci-fi' #which makes me feel :') #and they asked for grad school advice! i feel so USEFUL. they're so likeable and interested in stuff #even the ones who are clearly suffering under the weight of only being kind of interested and really wanting to pass the class #1. are showing up and asking questions! which i appreciate! #2. are obviously trying to think through the concepts and light up when something becomes less confusing #and i am very grateful to them for putting in the effort. and i hope i repaid it with useful information about how to pass the exam. #box opener
