Laurens's papers
Recently @46ten's posts got me hooked on the question surrounding what happened to Laurens's papers after his death, and who took hold of them. And you should check them out because they mention things I won't here, I've reblogged a few before posting this for reference. Anna (@my-deer-history) also made a valid point here, if you're interested. But here I will be diving into different subjects;
Additionally, JCH mentions that the Oct 1780 letter and the Apr 1779 letter are “the only one which has met our inquiries.” [x] Then are there are mentions of Elizabeth handing out the copies of the Oct 1780 to her biographers that she hired;
I see a common false assumption that Hamilton's family had them, but there only seems to have been two in their hold (Or at least that they published and didn't destroy). We know John C. “partly” published the April 1779 letter in Volume 1 of Life of Alexander Hamilton—I say partly because he cut out a large amount of paragraphs, he included everything from “Cold in my professions, warm in my friendships...” to “There is a total stagnation of news here...” but swiftly cuts out all the other paragraphs until “Fleury shall be taken care of. All the family send their love.”, but published the postscript. And does the same in The Works of Alexander Hamilton. He also had the physical original letter since there is a note and some censors on the letter presumably in one of the Hamilton boys handwriting.
But other than that, the only other Hamilton+Laurens letter that appears in John's work is the 11 October 1780 letter about Arnold and Andre. And many copies of the letter were made; “This letter was sent as an enclosure by H to Elizabeth Schuyler on October 11, 1780. The original letter sent to Laurens was probably intercepted, for there is a copy with three minor notations by Sir Henry Clinton in the William L. Clements Library of the University of Michigan. This letter, with relatively unimportant deletions, was printed in the New York Evening Post, July 23, 1802.” [x]
But [Elizabeth Hamilton] determined not to be outdone in this respect, and has submitted to me various manuscripts in the handwriting of her husband. The first is a letter addressed by him to Col. Laurens, then in France, giving a very particular account of the treason of Arnold, the capture, trial and execution of André, and of various personal interviews with him prior to his execution.

With a little bit of digging, I found an interesting story about William Gilmore Simms. He was an American writer and politician from the South who was a “staunch defender” of slavery (Ironic considering who he wrote about). And also a poet, novelist, and historian. He also wrote The Army Correspondence of Colonel John Laurens. As ardent a southerner as he was, Simms's engagement with history was never cynical or narrowly utilitarian. He thought of his historical scholarship as a genuine effort to understand the past and to propagate that understanding to others. His passion for history was obviously linked to his identity as a South Carolinian. He certainly believed that to be of value, history should be written to inform and instruct the present, but all who seriously study the past believe so.
Apparently it is unknown just when and how Simms acquired the Laurens papers, but on the 11th February, 1845, Simms expressed an interest in producing; “a series of papers made up of brief biographies of distinguished men of the Revolution in the South, interspersed with their original Letters” [x] Simms planned to write about both Henry Laurens and John Laurens, but also other influential figures like, John Rutledge, Horatio Gates, William Heath, Arthur Lee, and Patrick Henry. To which he then proposed a series.
Moving on, Simms began his research for a volume on John Laurens soon after the exchange of these letters, and that research continued into 1846. On the 21st of December, he wrote to editor and critic, Rufus W. Griswold, asking about an article touching upon John Laurens which had appeared in the 2nd of December, 1784, issue of the Independent Chronicle of Boston. But after this, there was no more mentions of the papers or series, and it appears Simms began to work on other projects. Nonetheless, Simms never abandoned the idea of writing about Laurens or the other figures with his manuscript collection.
Which actually leads to an interesting story of where Laurens's papers could have been completely lost to history due to a fire;
The Civil War and its aftermath would do much to determine the fate of Simms's collection of John Laurens papers. In his 31 May 1862 letter to William J. Rivers, Simms expressed his anxiety that the war would threaten his plantation with its large library and manuscript collection. “I wish to save my library,” he told Rivers, “but my first regard is for these valuable old documents,” a collection of “very rich” material. Simms had good reason to be anxious. In October of the previous year Union forces began their conquest of the South Carolina coast, and Simms feared that if Charleston should fall, his property, a mere 70 miles inland, would soon afterward be exposed. He therefore implored Rivers, a professor of Greek literature at South Carolina College in Columbia, to receive his Revolutionary War manuscripts and be “the custodian of these treasures.” Simms told Rivers that, “I had proposed Lives of Henry and John Laurens,” with “selections from their correspondence & a running commentary.” Noting further that he had “made notes of them, & examined them carefully” but had nonetheless, “made few draughts upon their contents,” Simms suggested Rivers could assist him in preparing them for publication.
Source — Reading William Gilmore Simms; Essays of Introduction to the Author's Canon, 2017
Simms had reason to be nervous about losing his library and manuscripts at this time because on the 29th of March, 1862, only two months before writing to Rivers, his house had caught fire. Although fortunately, it was put out successfully and there weren't endangering damages. Simms had only recently added a separate wing to the house to serve as his library. Probably completed no more than a month before the fire, which may have very well saved the manuscripts found in The Army Correspondence of Colonel John Laurens from destruction. Simms did confirm when writing to close friend William P. Miles afterwards that; “I have saved all my MS.S and nearly all my library. The wing was saved.” [x]
Later in 1864, at Woodlands, Simms was preparing to evacuate, packing up his manuscript collection and other selected items for shipment to Columbia, as threats of the Union Army coming had reached. While he had hoped to save his entire library, the manuscripts were his highest priority. Because the Union army appeared in Barnwell District, Simms was unable to return to Woodlands. In Columbia, he and his family were not present at Woodlands when it was burned down from Sherman's army. The library was entirely destroyed but at least the manuscripts had been saved.
After the war, Simms resumed his efforts to publish the Laurens papers. He spent the summer of 1866 in New York City trying to establish new and reestablish old connections with publishers and friends, disrupted as they had been by the Civil War. This included seeking a publisher for the Laurens papers as well as other pieces he had written or planned to write. With the help of Duyckinck, an agreement was reached with The Bradford Club (Founded in 1859 by John B. Moreau in New York City, The Bradford Club, named after William Bradford the first printer in the colony of New York, met periodically and published volumes on topics related to American history) to publish a portion of Laurens's papers.
These volumes were printed in a limited quantity and distributed to the club's members and subscribers. It published seven volumes from 1859-1867, before the club dissolved. Although there was a non-numbered volume by Duyckinck titled Memorial for John Allen and was published by the club in 1864. It was probably his previous connection that accounts for Duyckinck's apparent ease in arranging for The Bradford Club to publish Simms's The Army Correspondence of Colonel John Laurens which was the seventh and last volume published. Furthermore it was, in Simms's words, a “plan proposed by” Duyckinck which determined the form the volume would take.
In New York with the Laurens papers at hand, Simms began work immediately after the agreement had been reached. He asked Duyckinck for materials which would assist him in preparing a memoir of Laurens, that he planned to publish before the selection of letters to were included in the volume. Specifically, he requested a copy of the volume of D. Appleton and Company's The New American Cyclopedia, which Duyckinck had co-edited and also contained biographical sketches of Henry and John Laurens, both authored previously by Simms. Other references to other sources can be found in the “Memoir” included in The Army Correspondence of Colonel John Laurens.
On 28 September 1866 Simms wrote to Duyckinck; “I have prepared in a rough penciled draft, the memoir of Laurens,” and would begin revising and copying the next day. [x]
Tumblr media
The contents he outlined in this letter would be the final contents of the volume. In addition to the Memoir is an 1824 letter from John Church Hamilton, an historian and the fourth son of Alexander Hamilton, which described Laurens's military and diplomatic career. Simms then also placed a poem, Lines on the Death of Colonel Laurens by Philip Freneau, whom Simms described as; “the poet par excellence of the American Revolution.”
Although the Memoir does not offer the same as a comprehensive biography of Laurens would, it does provide sufficient context for the letters which follow it. Those letters, what Simms called “Laurens' camp letters,” span the period from 13 August 1777 to 18 October 1778, and are all addressed to his father. While Simms did possess other of Laurens's letters - some of which he does quote in the Memoir - he never directly addressed his decision to set these particular letters apart in the finished volume. It is speculated that perhaps he thought that because these letters were addressed to Laurens's father during the period he served as president of the Continental Congress, and they were written by the son from roughly the time he began his service with Washington to before he transferred to South Carolina; Simms believed they comprised a set with a loose but coherent narrative. This was, after all, the period during which Laurens first experienced the war and began to demonstrate those qualities which would merit his posthumous fame.
Following the Civil War, Simms had realized that his personal finances were in a dire condition—With a house to rebuild, and a family to care for he was eager to establish sources of income wherever they could be found. While still in New York during the summer of 1866, Simms sold some of his Washington papers for $250 to an unknown buyer. Then in May of 1867 - after having finished editing The Army Correspondence of Colonel John Laurens, but not yet seeing the printed volume - he became desperate, and was beginning to consider selling the Laurens papers. With assistance coming again from Duyckinck, as well as John Jacob Bockee, the papers were sold - probably sometime before July of 1867 - for $1,500 to the Long Island Historical Society. Which in 1985, changed its name to the Brooklyn Historical Society. Those papers were transcribed and microfilmed and sold some time in the 1960s, and today Simms's collection of Laurens papers is located at The South Caroliniana Library of the University of South Carolina in Columbia.
Something I came across when digging through the manuscripts of Hamilton's and Laurens's letters was that on the back of Hamilton's letter to Laurens, 30 June 1780, there is a note on the back that reads; "Letters from diverse persons to J.L. antecedent & subsequent to his appointment as Special Minister, &c."

Meaning someone was filtering through Laurens's letters, but I'm not sure who. As all previously presented, Laurens's papers were placed in many hands. It looks nothing like Simms's, as seen below with the first inage—nor, Evert A. Duyckinck's the second image.
Tumblr media
But George L. Duyckinck's is seemingly of closer resemblance;
Tumblr media
I also don't think Simms had any of the Hamilton+Laurens letters, as the Memoir only really contains letters from Laurens to his father. But that's not to say Simms never had these letters, rather he just focused on them. It could have been part of his collection but he didn't publish them, although I'm more inclined to believe these were part of the Coffin's sale. Moving on, according to Founders and other websites, Laurens's papers are scattered between several societies and libraries throughout the country, most in South Carolina, some in Massachusetts, etc.

🍿 Guess what time it is! 🍿
Let's play Popcorn, where we create a short story by "popping" from one writer to the next! When it is your turn, build onto the overall story. You can even add new plots or new characters. Try to keep it under 300 words, then pass it on (either to another creator or even back to me). This is supposed be a stress-free activity of being silly! Have fun!
---------------
Sitting in a packed bookstore on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Anna Schuyler-Dalton nervously bounces her crossed leg as she readjusts her Cartier watch on her wrist. 6:24 PM. Damnit, where is she? It's about to start.
Anna cranes her neck around the crowd, looking for signs of her best friend while at the same time defending the empty seat next to her.
"Anna!"
"Jenny!" Anna exhales in relief, helping the redhead to her seat. "What on earth–?"
"You're not going to believe what happened," she sighs, rubbing her pregnant belly. "I was…
I was excited to see this! It may have taken me a bit of time to come up with something to add, and I finally DID and I may have not followed the keep it under 300 words bit, not by a lot it's under 500.
Allow me to Introduce..... Christian Meadows 🤣 (IFYKYK)
Now to the story! I've included the original part and bolded where I continued.

"I was…getting ready and you know how difficult that can be.”
“Shhh.”
Anna and Jenny both turn and look over their shoulder to the woman who just shhh’d them. “It hasn’t even started yet.” Anna points out.
Her attention going back to her best friend who continues to rub her swollen belly. If she knew the speaker, and she knew him well, Anna knew they still had a few minutes before he graced everyone with his presence.
“I know how hard it’s getting for you, with you almost ready to pop. I would have understood if you couldn’t make it.”
Jenny lets out a laugh. “Then I wouldn’t be able to tell you who I ran into on the way here.” She turns to look at her best friend, knowing Anna was going to be in for the shock of her life. “I would have to wait to tell you and from the looks of it would have been hours from now.”
Anna gives a quick look behind them, seeing men and women sitting and standing, the crowd reaching all the way to entrance.
Yeah, they would be here for a few hours.
“Who’d you run into?”
“Christian.”
Anna gasps, a chill running down her back but quickly replaced by something unexpected. Crossing her leg over the other and squeezing her thighs a bit tighter.
“H..how…” Anything else Anna was about to say dies on her lips.
Anna never went into much detail with Jenny about her relationship with Christian, it has been years since she seen him.
Now with the mere mention of his name had her wondering if those piecing blue eyes still saw right through her and made her weak in the knees. If those broad shoulders and strong arms would still hold her the same the way…if his lips.
No!
Anna shook her head, her eyes went to her wedding ring. Her husband would be coming out in a matter of seconds to speak to everyone. That is who should be on her mind, not him.
“Who would have thought Christian Meadows would come back to New York—.” Jenny fans herself “How he got even sexier is still blowing my mind.”
“What did he say?” Anna finally whispered, trying to ignore the last bit her best friend said.
Before Jenny could answer, the host announces Sam and a rupture of applause breaks out from the crowd as he walks onto the stage, his gray eyes scanning the crowd until they land on Anna.
Looking back down at her hands that rest on her lap, readying herself to smile when she looks up, but it’s no longer gray eyes staring at her but those far to familiar haunting blue eyes.

Hamilton
Let me start by saying that I am in no way a theater critic. If you have specific questions send me an ask and I'll do my best to answer.
The first night, I went with a friend and my Gibbie (12 yrs old, almost 13). Just to give you background if you don't know, my friend is an 80 year old lady from church and last summer she came up to me after church and asked me if I liked Broadway shows. I said yes and she offered me her extra season ticket to the Broadway in El Paso shows if I was willing to drive. Obviously I said yes! We got to see Hairspray, On Your Feet (she gave my husband her ticket), Jesus Christ Superstar, Dear Evan Hansen (she gave Gibbie her ticket), Cats, and Hamilton. She ended up calling the theater and having our two season tickets changed to three so that Gibbie could go to Hamilton and we ended up getting even better seats than we originally had.
OK, getting to it. I had hyped myself up so much that I began to worry that I was going to be let down. Just before the show I told myself that there was no way that this would be as good as the original which I had listened to for nearly eight years and watched on Disney+ for the past three years. I quickly realized that my assumption was wrong. This cast (the Philip Cast for the North American Tour) was amazingly talented. Marcus Choi as George Washington blew me away and Lencia Kebede as Angelica was the perfect choice. Her rendition of Satisfied had me sobbing in my seat. The Schuyler Sisters chemistry was great and Hamilton and Eliza were perfect for each other.
Now for the surprise. If Hamilton is coming to your town or near you, download the Hamilton app and sign up for the lottery. I entered the lottery for every show except the one we already had tickets for. Last Saturday I was laying around and got a notification from the Hamilton app. I got excited before I even opened it because it never has notifications, and it ended up being nothing. A few hours later I got another notification and didn't get excited. This time it said I was a winner! I read it several times before saying anything because I wanted to make sure. Gibbie got so excited that I just went with it even though I would have liked to see it with my husband as well. She's a theater kid and we knew this would be so amazing for her.
We got to The Plaza Theater and we told ourselves that if this wasn't true afterall we will just go to a movie or something. I went to the ticket window and gave my ID, the lady went through the tickets and it took forever. I thought surely that there was something wrong and I didn't have tickets afterall. Finally, she handed them to me, I signed for them, and we went in. We were in the second row and no one sat directly in front of us! After freaking out for a good 20 minutes we finally got comfy and the show started. We could see every drop of sweat on the actor's faces. This time around I could see that Hamilton's eyes were green!
There was a different actress for Peggy Schuyler and I didn't like her as much as the first night. Well, she was fine for Peggy but during the second act when she was Maria Reynolds I just wasn't thrilled. Gibbie liked her better though. We both made eye contact with the ensemble actors which was a lot of fun because they included us in their acting (making gestures during various scenes, and we keep joking about how one of the soldiers pointed his gun right at me which was awesome yet very uncomfortable as well).
Jared Howelton was Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson. The first night I wasn't sure about him, I went back and forth several times. The second night though, being closer and seeing his face better, I honestly thing he was made for the role. He brought something to it that was so uniquely him and flamboyantly in character.
There were other little differences in gestures and expressions which was fun to see as I have always been more of a behind the scenes theater nerd (I made sets and costumes in HS because I panicked during auditions). Gibbie is an on stage theater person so she probably knows more about that stuff. When Philip Hamilton dies, we could actually see the tear coming from Alexander Hamilton's eyes.
I'm sure I will think of more to post but for now, this is my review.

would anything have prevented james from dying, like stepping down as prince of danforth or family members being home? (weren't tatiana and the boys out on a trip when james died?) i know philip has the reputation of being the "troubled" one, but how long had james been suffering?
Yes, James's death was fully preventable and all that really needed to happen was for the "people upstairs" (aka Louis's team of sycophants that run Chester Palace) to stage an intervention for him to get some sort of mental care or have him hospitalized. Schuyler and James's team were on board with getting him help and trying to spin a narrative afterwards, however, Louis's coms team actively blocked this because they were worried that James's image would be damaged if the media found out he was in and out of a mental hospital.
They also convinced Louis that James was not actually "that bad" and Louis believed them. You have to understand, Louis's comms team is comprised of the people who originally saved his marriage and reputation after FarrahGate: he trusts these people with his life and he and Irene value their opinions like they are facts.
Another thing that prevented this was the fact that James was also insisting that he wasn't "that bad" which leads to another issue: James was very good at hiding his mental health problems and he never talked about it with anyone outside of maybe Tatiana and, oddly, enough Queen Katherine, his paternal grandmother. He was very different from Phillip, who often lashed out specifically because he wanted attention, James felt very embarrassed and was fearful of being "exposed" as some sort of fraud, so you can imagine getting him to actually open up would be hard.
I don't think James would have needed to step down. He wouldn't have wanted to because it would leave Nicholas, a minor, as heir (Ironic because that's what happened anyway, but I think in James's mind there was a difference between ending everything and giving up his birthright—what he was raised for—and still having a life afterwards).
I think he literally just needed a chance to get away, relax, get the treatment he needed for a year or maybe two, and divide his workload among other members of the family. He would also need to have his family change how they operate on an interpersonal level. At the time of his death, he was basically working non-stop and was involved in trying to fix several problems within the family and institution before they blew up into scandals (like Phillip and Courtney's marital issues, for example). It was too much stress added on top of a man who already had a history of depression from a family with a history of mental health problems. His depression also began to fuck up his relationship with Tatiana as well, so then there's that: It was like all the factors were stacked against him.
TW suicide below the cut
I think that James was probably struggling with depression for decades, but it worsened with age, especially when he began to realize that Louis was getting older and wouldn't be around forever.
Once it kind of "clicked" in James's mind that he wanted to die (this would have been in January 2017, around his 40th birthday) it was already too late. That was his point of no return. He became very peaceful between then and September, so much so that Tatiana mistakenly thought he was getting better. In reality, he was just feeling a sense of resolution while he was finalizing his will and leaving instructions for his funeral.
The family typically spends late June through to the end of August at Collingwood, the King's summer retreat. They leave Collingwood almost always on August 31 and resume public work just after Labour Day. James and his family own a cottage on the Collingwood Estate, you'll notice in posts set at Collingwood that there's the main castle looming in the background of the actual cottage where James would have lived.
On August 31, Tatiana and the boys returned to the city, but James claimed that he still had stuff to sort out at Collingwood. He promised his family he'd meet up with them in a day or two, and they honestly thought nothing of it since James is so meticulous that something like this wasn't out of character for him. This was James isolating himself from his family because: 1) he didn't want to traumatize them further or have them discover him after the fact and 2) he was ensuring no one could stop him.
Also note: that's the reason why Tatiana hangs out so much at Collingwood now that she's an empty nester: that's where she feels close to him. She also feels a lot of guilt for not insisting he stay close, which is sad since there's nothing Tatiana could have done to stop in the grand scheme:
Had Tatiana been able to stop him on September 1, he would have just waited until September 15, if someone stopped him on the 15th he'd have waited until October. So, I think it would have been instrumental for him to have gotten help before he reached that point something that, sadly, did not happen.

Just remembered a really old PJO x Hamilton au I had that got started because I was re-reading the first 5 books and it mentioned that most famous US figures (more specifically, a large portion of the founding fathers) were Greek and Roman demigods.
I decided I wanted to bring that crossover back, so here are some headcanons (could be modern au, the original timeline, or maybe a reincarnation. Take your pick, it’s not really specified)
-Philip and Catherine Schuyler had a habit of bringing gods and goddesses alike into bed with them for threesomes of all stripes, usually as a casual fling, though occasionally the deity wanted an actual relationship. This ends up with all the Schuyler sisters having different godly parents.
-To continue on that train of thought: Angelica is either a child of Athena or Nemesis, Peggy is a child of Persephone, and Eliza is a child of Aphrodite. Of the three, only Eliza has formally rejected her godly heritage, although she will accept occasional boons from Hestia
-Alexander himself is, shockingly, not a demi-god or legacy of any sort. He is aware of both the Greeks and the Romans because he got accepted to the New Rome university and then started trying to forcibly make himself clear-sighted. Somehow, this works.
-Hercules is the only child of Hera. When he was discovered, she nearly killed him to maintain her reputation, before coming to a compromise that he would never interact with the Demi-god camps or make the Olympians aware of him. He was named after her, which on one hand makes her really happy, but on the other hand, it serves as a reminder of her husband’s most successful infidelities.
-Lafayette is, rather unsurprisingly, another child of Aphrodite (maybe a legacy of Dionysus? remains to be seen)
-John is a child of Apollo who cannot sing to save his life.
-Washington, as per in the books, is a child of Athena. He’s largely distanced himself from the Greek side of his heritage, but will open his door for any and all runaway or questing demi-gods.
-Burr is a legacy (more specifically, a grandchild) of one of the death gods, I personally think Thanatos or Hades but literally anyone works, that has shockingly strong abilities when it comes to seeing the otherworldly (including non-Greek mythological creatures). This does end up coming at the cost of most offensive abilities he could have had, but Burr doesn’t really mind that. He is slightly bothered that he was left in the hands of his abusive and very religious uncle rather than taken to camp, but he tries not to create a grudge out of it because God knows he will never get rid of that resentment.

John Adams and Hamilton, briefly
A closer examination of Adams’s use of eighteenth-century moral philosophy, especially Smith’s The Theory of Moral Sentiments, reveals a striking and underappreciated originality in Adams’s political thought. As Luke Mayville has powerfully demonstrated, Adams’s preoccupation with aristocracy - and its malignant twin, oligarchy - in the Defense and Discourses reveals not a fondness for, but rather a grave fear of, oligarchic power in American society. While democratic republican reformers like Jefferson believed that America would weed out the roots of ancient and corrupt oligarchic institutions and cultivate the seeds of a truly meritocratic and virtuous elite, Adams was doubtful. According to Adams, the deep, social psychological roots of authority would give rise to a “natural aristocracy” not of the wise, talented, and virtuous, but rather of the beautiful, well-born, and wealthy. What is more, this national aristocracy would not only survive, but thrive if left unchanged, all to the detriment of the republic. Adams approached moral philosophy as more than an academic guide to the human psyche. He made it a crucial link between the “phenomena of social life and the problems of political power” that enabled him to advance a unique conception of oligarchy.
Adam Smith’s America: How a Scottish Philosopher became an Icon of American Capitalism by Glory M. Liu (2021).
[I may add to this post later, as I have been wanting to do a longer post summarizing/explaining why the Hamilton/Adams relationship was the way it was.]
To understand the differences between Adams and Hamilton, one first has to start with an understanding of the differences between the New England colonies, the Middle/Mid-Atlantic colonies, and the Southern colonies. (American schools start teaching about the differences between the colonies in elementary/middle school - so I’m not sure if the very crude summary that follows is even necessary - and there are entire books on this topic). These were separate societies. (Leaving out the Southern colonies) we have the Germans, Dutch, and English in PA/NY/NJ/DE vs the Puritan descendant Massachusetts colonists. The founders of these colonies were different groups of people: they differed economically, in religious beliefs, in the structure of society, in attitudes on a range of subjects, etc. A ‘tolerant’ society focused on profit - the Dutch traded weapons to the Native Americans that they in turn used to raid NE towns - vs the fiercely independent and religious communities of NE. A people who saw themselves in America seeking freedom (NE) vs disparate peoples in America seeking profit (Middle). NE did not have farmland that could support large agricultural operations - family farms were most common. In contrast, NY/NJ was governed by a slave-owning, Dutch and English aristocracy, heavily involved in trade of wheat (the breadbasket of N. America), fur and lumber for West Indian sugar. William Duer, who marries into the Livingston family, spent part of his early adulthood running his family estate in the West Indies; an entire branch of the prestigious Cruger family were NY-West Indian merchants. This latter group pushed Hamilton to the forefront of national politics.
The anger NEnglanders held against the Middle colonists for their interactions with Native Americans (the French and Indian War played no small part in hatred) and their bias based on moral deficits lasts straight through the AmRev - Albany was considered practically a den of sin by NE soldiers, who also, of course, were horrified to be under the charge of Philip Schuyler. One of the reasons for Schuyler’s removal as commander of the Northern Dept was exactly this political concern. When we read several accounts of Schuyler as aristocratic, this is NE bias at work, too, against a ‘Dutch’ large landowner, wealthy slave holder, and prominent trader of West Indian goods.
And then Hamilton enters the picture. Adams may have disliked him because he’s an upstart - someone who rose very quickly in the early national political scene through his support from and for the Dutch slave-owning aristocracy, while Adams labored for decades supporting the nascent country with a political philosophy he found far more principled - but there were also real differences in interests and philosophy. And AH did very little to reduce any suspicion. Hamilton seemed to have decided fairly early on that Adams was not of sufficient skill or integrity - and just plain did not share the same profit-loving beliefs - to play a major role in new government, so he undermined Adams, even when wholly unnecessary. (Not to say that Adams was particularly adept in his roles as V. President and President, either.)  Adams regarded Hamilton’s economic plans as harmful to the poor (they were) and designed to further enrich the wealthy (they did). Adams absolutely recognized Hamilton for the warmonger he was.
Hamilton meddles almost immediately against Adams - ensuring that he’d get few electoral votes in 1789, when the election of Washington wasn’t even in question. He wanted Adams to lose the election of 1796, throwing his support behind Pinckney instead. With an aim of not disrupting the continuity the new nation experienced under Washington, Adams kept most of the same cabinet members, only to have AH use those members to run the gov’t behind Adams’s back. Let’s not even get into AH’s machinations during the Quasi-War. In a long list of ways, Hamilton was duplicitous towards Adams before outright challenging him. And then Hamilton had the nerve to claim a superior moral character to Adams in 1800 in his pamphlet shared with other members of the Federalist party. There was a lot of underhandedness going on from AH. This again is an example of Hamilton’s invincible belief in his own rightness.
That said, Adams had no extraordinary interest in Hamilton’s personal life beyond the fairly common staunch Calvinist point-of-view that a deficient family background brought about a deficient moral character, void of virtue and reason, and therefore unfit to lead. Nor was Adams singular in his concern about the talent, reason, and virtues - the character - of major political players - these concerns take up a lot of ink in this period of time because of the prevalent moral and political philosophies. Who should be leaders? Who should vote? To the extent that Adams shared the common Federalist belief that a natural aristocracy was composed of men reliant on reason and virtue, Hamilton, by way of his illegitimate birth in the West Indies, was never going to fit the ideal. And Hamilton certainly lived up (or down?) to that negative reputation of being primarily interested in benefiting the wealthy and the well-born, and then a confirmed adulterer. But Adams could be fairly publicly moderate with men with whom he held private disagreements (Franklin!). He even seems to have had a good opinion of Philip Schuyler, as I recall one of the things Adams wanted to do was to name Philip Schuyler and others holding the rank of General at the time of the end of the AmRev to positions of formal leadership in 1798-99, and was baffled at Hamilton elevating himself and all his cronies.
Once Hamilton was dead, Adams (who turned 70 in 1805) seemed to enjoy making up additional gossip about him - we have no record, for example, of anyone else stating that Hamilton was an opium addict. We also have no record of anyone else stating that Hamilton was having affairs with all his sisters-in-law. But Adams also wasn’t publicly publishing this stuff - it’s in his correspondence to select others.
All that said, Adams really should be more popular than Hamilton - Adams really was an anti-slavery Founding Father; though he was not an abolitionist, he offered them his support. He was closer to a political moderate (in modern parlance) than Hamilton. And he rightly identified the oligarchic plan that underlay the High Federalists’ vision, although he certainly wasn’t a populist, either.
There’s a lot more historical context than just personality differences between personages. And there’s a lot more understanding of political and moral philosophies of the time that is needed before speculating about the whats and whys of Adams’s behavior (or speculation about Washington’s reactions to additional speculation). Warning, lecture here: Folks have dedicated their professional lives to understanding some of these topics, and we need to show greater interest in what they have found and reframe our opinions accordingly.
This is horribly brief and reductive and I can already see the simplifications that will lead to errors, and I may expand on it later, but it gets some general thoughts down.

More books!
Baking Cakes in Kigali by Gaile Parkin
Read this in Spring 2013 for a bookclub I was in. The club fizzled out shortly after the meeting for this book, presumably for unrelated reasons.
I wasn't fond of this. I was disappointed when it was selected, and reading it did not change my mind. I was curious about reading fiction set in post-genocide Rwanda, but it was a very curated, maudlin view. Schuyler on Goodreads said it best, "since the story takes place mostly on this isolated apartment complex which has its own guard, you get the sense that this isn't exactly an accurate portrait of modern Rwanda, post genocide. It's a little too sunny and everything has a silver lining and the book even ends with a triumphant wedding. It's kinda like watching Disney's Aladdin and thinking, "So that's what the Middle East is like!"
This one is easy for me to get rid of. I thought it would be hard, because I struggle getting rid of books I read for a bookclub. This club only met twice, and I'm not in touch with anyone who was originally in it, so it's not a challenge at all. And leaving it in a Free Little Library vs. throwing it out makes this task uncomplicated.
item #5
verdict: I can not for the life of me remember how I acquired this book. Possibly amazon? I don't think I found it in a bookstore. It was probably ordered online, either new or second hand. Full price is $24.00, but I'm finding it online used for around $5, including the shipping. Regardless what amount I spent, it was worth it at the time. I do enjoy bookclubs, and buying the book gives me enough joy, but I'm glad it's leaving my shelf for the FLL.

💃🏻🚢Death on the Nile thoughts and review !!!🥂🕌
Spoilers under cut !!
Tumblr media
After literal years of waiting, hearing that teeny teaser at the end of Murder on the Orient Express- I have finally got to watch Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile!!!!!!!
Death on the Nile is my joint favourite Agatha Christie book (along with Five Little Pigs), and I adore Suchet’s version soooo much, I’ve rewatched it so many times. Not a fan of Ustinov but that’s just my personal taste. I love murder lovers Jackie and Simon (the fact Simon was last played by JJ Felid and now Armie….. the downgrade) and the ending scene is one of my favourites in not even just any Poirot, but of all movies (and why I started listening to Al Bowly) So this new adaptation had a lot to hold up to !!!
Overall, I did really enjoy it! The cinematography was beautiful and the acting was really good too!! I loved the scene with Poirot and his little biscuits!!!! “Leave my little friend alone.” Baby boy baby.
Van Schuyler and Bowers being together made me really happy!!! Lesbians, lesbians, lesbians!!!!!!! Little old lady lesbians!!!! It was a very nice and fitting addition. But I did Not like how Poirot outed them in front of Bouc? And how … aggressive he was being.
Emma Mckay was really good as Jackie. I didn’t think I would like anyone who wasn’t Emma Griffiths Malin as Jackie but I loved Emma Mckay just as much!!!!! She played her so well.
The merging of Pennington with Allerton and Mr Ferguson with Dr Bessner was interesting. As was how they were all in Egypt for the Doyle’s wedding party and all knowing each other rather than just coincidentally going on the same cruise. And of course the addition of Bouc and his mother being apart of that. I’m not sure why Branagh kept Bouc in when Colonel Race was right there…. or the reason to kill him off that wasn’t just to make Poirot more edgy and sad.
The mustache lore…. I hated. Hated. Poirot has a funky mustache. That is it. We don’t need a traumatic reason Mr. Branagh…. not to mention him SHAVING IT AT THE END. I loved Rosie’s little Poirot roast, but I resent that he admitted it was true? Like yes, Poirot is all those things. He is egotistical and a little freak but I don’t think he would ever admit to that. And I really don’t like that Poirot is the little freak that he is, because of the moustache trauma, because of the weird love interest back story. “I was normal before :)) I was gonna be a farmer :))” No, Poirot is just a little weirdo. An egotistical little freak penguin man. That is why I love him. He doesn’t need a reason to be so!!! The weird edgy trauma porn for him was weird as heck and I wish Branagh had left that out, but, artistic liberty, his vision and all I suppose.
So yes, overall I did enjoy the movie! Beautiful cinematography, great actors and lovely music! It was a good adaptation of the original story, and though I did not enjoy it nearly as much as it or the 2004 version, they will always be there for me to reread and rewatch !! I’m very excited to see what else Branagh does in creating the AGATHA CHRISTIE CINEMATIC UNIVERSE!!!!! I’ve seen him mentioning making a Miss Marple film, and that I would love. But he better not make her young or anything!

Yeah, I F*cked That Up with A Tony Winner; The King's Reign About LeBron Debuts
Tumblr media
The latest F* Up on Yeah, I F*cked That Up Interval Presents, Warner Music Group’s (WMG) in-house podcast network, has a new series, Yeah, I F*cked That Up, which challenges the stigma of failure as the podcast highlights stories of defeat from prominent figures in the entertainment industry. The interview series premiered July 11 with featured guests Kelly Rowland and Steven Van Zandt. I listened to these first two episodes and with no need for a spoiler alert, I can tell you that both episodes are so fresh and elegant in their narrative about "what I've would have different." The maestro here is the podcast's host is Grammy-nominated hitmaker Billy Mann, who has produced and written songs for some of the world’s most well-known musicians over the course of his 25+ year career. Mann dazzles as he carefully guides his guests through their journey of self-reflection. When you're a podcast host, and you're interviewing a guest about how they became a billionaire, you just ask a few perfunctory questions and enjoy the ride. When you're talking to a guest about mistakes, screw-ups, or decisions they'd take back, the journey can get bumpy. Thankfully, Mann is a pilot who navigates the show even in the most intense storms.
This week’s episode of Interval Presents’ new celebrity interview series, "Yeah, I F*cked That Up," features special guest Renée Elise Goldsberry. Renée Elise Goldsberry may never be satisfied. Yes, she won a Tony and Grammy for her role as Angelica Schuyler in one of the most celebrated Broadway shows ever, Hamilton, but the path there was paved with “no’s.” Host Billy Mann talks with Renée about the failures she’s faced head on, and the enormous weight of trying to build a career and family at the same time.
On Renee's pivotal choice: Broadway's Paper Moon or Jesus Christ Superstar National Tour, “I was graduating with two possibilities, two jobs, and I was freaking out. And I was so upset because I had two choices of what to do, and I didn't know what to do, and I thought I was going to let somebody down and myself.”During the episode, Renee shared how she was reluctant to audition for Hamilton. “First of all, I didn't think they'd cast me anyway. Thought I was too old, you know…I thought I'm going to be happily be sitting in the audience with my baby.”
Tune in HERE to catch the Tony Award-winning Hamilton star discuss her time on Broadway and the weight of trying to build a career while balancing personal relationships. New episodes of Yeah, I F*cked That Up air every Tuesday.
The Life Of LeBron On A King's Reign Debuts
American sports fans are obsessed with GOATS. Not the animal, although they are "baaad," but the "greatest of all-time" discussions. Here's a new podcast that goes full-on GOAT, and takes the added step of looking at the athlete's life before celebrity. A King’s Reign,” a new podcast series from The Athletic, takes a look back at LeBron James’s unprecedented career.
In this groundbreaking narrative podcast series, a team of all-star sports journalists come together to highlight the important stories from LeBron’s legendary 20-season run as the face of the NBA with insights from the people who grew up with, lockered next to, campaigned with, toasted victory and cried in defeat with arguably the greatest basketball player of all time.
Episodes feature original reporting from The Athletic’s deep bench of experts, including David Aldridge, Sam Amick, Marcus Thompson II, Joe Vardon, Jason Lloyd, Zach Harper, the “No Dunks” podcast crew, and more.
In the introductory episode, senior NBA writer Joe Vardon details LeBron’s humble upbringing in Akron and his never-before-seen stardom in high school, up through the hopes of a franchise pinned on the mere possibility of being able to draft him out of its own backyard.
From now through July 28, the 12-episode series will dive into LeBron’s high school prospect days to his unique rivalry with Steph Curry, his cultural impact as a “meme generator,” and more.
Listeners can find A King’s Reign on The Athletic NBA Show feed.
