The kiddush schmooze relationships

Another category that's been torn from my life by the pandemics. I think it's what some people would call acquaintance. Qualities include:

predictably seeing them at a semi public place (in this case, shul/beit knesset/synagogue) but i suppose if you worked at a big place where you didn't actually work with a lot of your coworkers, this relationship would probably apply to that too

consistently saying hi, acting (feeling?) happy to see them

knowing a good amount about their life through smalltalk

occasionally seeing each other at Shabbat meals (parties?), but cruicially never actually inviting one another to meals either of you are hosting. then you'd be upgraded to shabbat friends.

tbh ok... I've been trying to wrangle my thoughts into line about this and have not talked about this anywhere but. I didn't vibe with yennefer's character in s3 as much (with some notable exceptions). the choice to make her appear extra powerful, heroic, in charge, etc were... not good for her character.

like geralt in s2, she didn't have much of a character arc. her character moments that challenged her had all happened in s2 and she seemed to exist in s3 purely to directly drive the plot forward. idk if that was wholly due to the book changes that put her more centrally in the thanned conclave and coup and lodge setup but. those choices sure didn't help.

(the notable exceptions for me were the fight at the silver heron where we see her struggle to keep it together more distinctly and also several vulnerable scenes with tissaia)

#i'm not sure how to describe the change exactly but it's like #suddenly this character is incapable of making mistakes #her magic is effortless and she's extra powerful #every bad thing is something that happens to her not really due to her own choices (with exception) #and suddenly she's just. a perfect doting mother. and a charismatic politician. and an emotionally honest and vulnerable friend and lover. #anyway lol that's just me #there's moments we see that her political schmoozing is an act but it's all very. well. ooc for me #twn #twn critical #i've largely been reluctant to say this because the majority of criticisms in this vein give me hives #but as a distinct lover of twn yennefer yeah. its just a disappointment

i think i came off as pretty stubborn and snide in that post and i kind of feel bad about it! i think it's important not to dig your heels in and take it personally if people don't think you're funny. it can really rub them the wrong way because it sets a precedent of, essentially, not listening to people or their feedback. i think good improv and a quick wit is a muscle that can be exercised and strengthened like any other skill. i really do workshop my bits! and i take pride in being able to make people laugh pretty easily these days, regardless of audience and venue, so to speak.

this isn't to say you should be a total people-pleaser, but rather that (as with any other social activity) telling jokes is a two-way street, and i think showing people that you're willing to meet them where they're at and make them laugh with jokes that suit them is a very beneficial skill that will get you much further in life than insisting on only catering to your own hyperspecific tastes.

in other words:

#never underestimate the power of schmoozing. you too can learn and hone this skill. you CAN be the life of the cocktail party! #but first you have to allow your ego to get very very bruised... only then can you have your rocky training montage through clown school #shebbz shoutz #xkcd #ask
