At The Table with Christie's

Acclaimed artist Hiba Schahbaz, who participated in the exhibition, showcased an oil painting entitled ‘Self Portrait after Nauman’.

As an Asian woman, Schahbaz goes on to explain why fundraisers such as At The Table are close to her heart. Schahbaz says, “I was born in Karachi, Pakistan and I live in Brooklyn, New York. The oil painting Self Portrait after Nauman in this exhibition is based on Bruce Nauman’s photograph Self Portrait as a Fountain. I love the community aspect of this exhibition. I am socially-minded and I believe that energy and resources should flow through the community to uplift society as a whole. As an Asian woman who grew up in Pakistan, I come from a society where we venerate and take care of our older generation. I am deeply grateful to have lived in a household where my grandfather was an important family member. As a child, it was my duty to check on him after dinner, give him his supplements and make sure he was comfortable. I find it heartwarming and a blessing to see young Asian people in New York carrying on this way of life, upholding our values, and spreading love.”

Museum trip on 10/15

On this date I went to attend the ICA in downtown Miami. I went in with my classmates, and had a great time there. The gallery was full of so many different styles of work. Some were pleasing to the eye, while others felt more jarring and uncomfortable. It was an experience that felt other worldly as if time stopped while looking at the different works of art.

Some notes about the works:

Two works that I’ve enjoyed from the experience has been the two from my second and final picture.

For the second picture there’s a seemingly simplistic however upon closer inspection there’s small loose strands of hair framing her face. The painting was made by Hiba Schahbaz, it has no title . However the tag reference in parentheses “after Picasso’s young girl with a flower basket”. The painting also has in its delicate water color carefully lines and details of the leaves and flowers the woman in the image is holding. It’s sent in an almost full 2 dimensional plane with the woman is is at full center making her the central emphasis of the image.

While the final picture tells a different story. The painting was made by Umar Rashid with the title “ a spartan kind of love “.

I was immediately drawn into the painting with it’s beautiful silhouettes of the soldiers and their general on a horse, it immediately reminded me of Greek pottery narratives that depicted stories or a event in history. With a cool colors pallet as the back ground the narrative for this particular painting seemed to be soldiers coming back from war and now are headed home, at least that’s how I interpret it. Which made the darkly painted silhouettes stand out from the serene scene behind them.
