Chapter One
Harry Potter was worried about his twin, she’d been so secretive recently, ever since the first week of summer. Harry knew they weren’t kids anymore but Y/N was his best friend and they used to tell each other everything. James and Sirius knew that something was up when Harry mooched into the kitchen.
“What’s wrong?” his godfather laughed as he drank his tea.
“Where’s, Y/N?” he directed the question at his dad, ignoring Sirius. James shrugged as he leaned back in the kitchen chair.
“She’s off playing Quidditch in the woods, you know how she gets when she wants to be alone.”
Harry nodded, he did know but he was still a bit miffed that she hadn’t asked him for a match, “she’s supposed to come with me to Ron’s for tea,” he muttered.
At that moment, Lily walked into the kitchen and kissed her son on the cheek, “well, she’ll be back by that time.”
Harry nodded, forcing a smile for his mum’s benefit, but he just knew that something was going on with her. And, he was worried about her.
You cursed beneath your breath as you all but ran home, you had nearly lost track of time, you had nearly forgotten that you were having tea at the Weasley’s tonight. As you walked through the front door Harry was coming down the stairs.
“Hey, Y/N,” he smiled and you felt your guilt begin to brew in your stomach, “have fun playing Quidditch?” he smiled but it didn’t reach his eyes.
You could tell he was hurt but he’d never admit it, he’d never understand either and you hated doing this to him, “well, I would have asked you to join me but I know how busy you must be pining over Ginny Weasley.”
Harry scoffed as he pushed his glasses up his nose, “you’re my sister, and my best friend, I’m never too busy for you.”
You smiled, “thanks, Harry. I’m just gonna get ready and then we can go to Ron’s,” you traipsed upstairs without waiting for a reply. On the way to your room, you passed your dad, “why did you tell Harry that I was playing Quidditch?” you sighed.
James frowned, “what in Merlin’s name was I supposed to say, Y/N?” he continued when you shrugged, “you are your brother’s best friend and I know he’s yours but you need to tell him before he finds out for himself. Now, I don’t approve but you’re not a little kid anymore.”
“See you later, dad,” you sighed as you walked into your room to get ready.
As you and Harry were leaving the cottage and were walking up the path, Harry groaned out in dismay.
“What’s the matter?” you laughed but Harry didn’t reply or look at you, he kept staring ahead with a scowl on his face.
You followed your brother’s gaze and saw that Malfoy was passing by with his friend Mattheo Riddle, as soon as Malfoy saw Harry, his face lit up with malice, “alright, Scarhead?”
You glared over at Malfoy before glancing at Riddle who was smirking at you, you scowled at him, keeping your eyes on him long enough to see him raise his eyebrow, a smug look forming on his face. “C’mon, Harry just ignore them,” you glared at the Slytherin boys as you pulled Harry away, Riddles smug face in the back of your mind.
Dinner at the Weasley’s was always something to look forward to, Mrs Weasley’s cooking was amazing and you always had a laugh with the big family. However, this year it was different, it was almost awkward, you had to watch your brother try – and fail – to flirt with Ginny. Ron and Hermione were also starting to fall for each other, though they were the only ones who couldn’t see it. You had managed to keep your embarrassment in check until it was time to sit down for dinner.
“So, Y’N, dear,” Molly started, “are you in love yet?”
Ron snorted into his food as your eyes widened and you felt a flush creep up your neck, you shook your head as you looked up at Molly, “no, I’m not.”
“I think Y/N is trying to get onto the national Quidditch team with how much she’s been playing it this summer,” you forced a smile at your brother but said nothing more, and your love life wasn’t brought up again.
After dinner, you decided to leave early and without Harry, usually you and Harry would stay for as long as you could but the guilt in your stomach hadn’t settled yet. It made it virtually impossible for you to be around your friends when you felt like that. It was when you were getting ready for bed that the knock on your patio door came and startled you.
You sighed when you saw the handsome Slytherin boy standing out on your balcony, you padded over and opened the patio door, quickly ushering him inside.
“Mattheo,” you hissed, “what are you doing here?”
He smiled and cupped your cheek with a warm hand, “I wanted to see you before I head back home, I feel like I haven’t seen you as much recently.”
You scoffed and looked away from him, crossing your arms over your chest, “you literally saw me today.”
“For like an hour,” Mattheo sighed and kissed you softly. Your fingers delved into his thick curls as you briefly kissed him back before you pushed him away, “what’s the matter?” he asked, resting his forehead against yours.
“Nothing,” you shook your head, you couldn’t see how this relationship – if that was even what it was – would work at Hogwarts, it was too much sneaking around and you had to keep a lot more secrets at school than you did at home. Also, you didn’t have the heart to tell him your relationship had an expiry date. It really seemed like you were lying to everyone.
“Y/N,” Mattheo started, biting his lip, in that moment he looked so vulnerable as he stared at you with wide eyes, and you almost forgot who he was. Almost. “Can I stay here tonight? I don’t want to go back to Draco’s, you know he’ll be there.”
“Mattheo,” you sighed but he interrupted you before you could say anything further.
“Please, Y/N? I promise I’ll be gone before your parents wake up.”
You cupped his cheeks and fought back tears, “you have to go, everyone is in danger if you’re here.”
Mattheo looked like he’d been gut punched and he pulled away from you so quickly it was like you’d burned him, “right,” he hissed with a nod, “the scum can’t put the perfect Potter’s in danger.”
“I never said that!”
Mattheo sniffed as he wrenched open your patio door, “you didn’t have to. Goodnight, Y/N,” he climbed down your balcony and disappeared into the night.
“Goodbye, Mattheo,” you sighed as you watched him go.
The next morning was an early start and you almost immediately regretted promising that you would meet Ron and Hermione for an early lunch. You could barely keep your eyes open as you shuffled into the kitchen. You had been awake for most of the night half wishing that you had let Mattheo stay. You yawned as you spread butter onto your toast.
“You’re quiet this morning, Y/N,” James glanced at you from the other end of the table.
Harry snickered as he walked into the kitchen, “you say that like it’s a bad thing, dad.”
You scowled at your twin, “fuck you, Potter.”
“Language, Y/N!” Lily gasped but you couldn’t miss the laughter in her voice. Your mum narrowed her green eyes at you, “did you have a friend over last night? I could have sworn I heard you talking to someone.”
You shook your head, refusing to look at your dad, though you could feel him looking at you from where he sat, “I didn’t have anyone over last night, mum,” you mumbled. Lily nodded but continued to regard you suspiciously.
In no time at all, you were meeting Ron and Hermione outside of the ice cream parlour in the blazing sun.
“Hello again,” Hermione laughed as she pulled you into a hug, you grinned as you hugged her back and over her shoulder you waved at Ron.
“Sorry about my mum last night, that must have been embarrassing,” Ron almost winced as you laughed and shook your head.
“Don’t worry about it!” you sat at the table and smiled over at Hermione, “thanks for getting my fave,” you blew her a kiss as you a sip from your iced Butterbeer.
“Ugh, incoming,” Hermione rolled her eyes as she took a sip of her own drink, you could tell by the venom in her voice that it was Malfoy and his band of Slytherins. You didn’t even turn to look until Ron spoke up.
“Bloody hell, look at Riddle’s face.”
You glanced over your shoulder and was filled with horror by what you saw, Mattheo had been badly beaten, he had a black eye and a huge gash in his lip, almost like it had been split open. He looked at you with wounded eyes as he walked past but he said nothing. Neither did Malfoy.

Prompt 12 - College AU
@wolfstarmicrofic April 12, word count 408
Remus didn’t think he’d make it to college. He’d scraped through his GCSEs, and A-Levels would be so much harder. But he felt better now. The doctors had finally figured out which meds worked for him, and he could go the whole day without feeling horrendous. But the piece of paper he clutched in his hand gave him hope.
His parents sat across from him at the kitchen table, waiting for him to tell them what it said.
“What does it say, cariad?” His mother asked. He looked up at her, blinking the tears back.
“Well?” His father asked impatiently.
“I got in.” He grinned at his parents. “I got in!” Hope jumped to her feet and enveloped him in a hug as he began to sob. Lyall rolled his eyes but came to join in the hug as well.
“Well done, son. I’m proud of you.” His father told him. Remus didn’t think he’d ever said that to him.
“Can I call Sirius?” He pleaded. They were supposed to be going out for the day. Lyall had them on a strict itinerary, and Remus had already wasted time staring at his letter.
“Oh, let the boy call his Beau, Lyall. What’s ten minutes?” She cooed at her husband as she purposely wrapped her arms around him and used her slippered foot to push Remus towards the door. She winked at him when he looked back.
Sirius picked up on the first ring.
“I got in!” Remus trilled. He knew Sirius had been worrying as much as he’d been and didn’t want to keep him in suspense.
“Really?! Yes! So did I! Remus, this is amazing! We’re going to have so much fun!” Remus indulged his boyfriend, letting him make plans for them for the next two years. He made Remus a promise to help him with his coursework if he wanted him to and got Remus to promise to help him if he needed it.
His father appeared, tapping his watch, and Remus nodded.
“Sirius love, we’re going out for the day, and my dad’s waiting.” He reluctantly cut Sirius and his sweet ramblings off.
“Oh, no worries. Have fun. Say hi to Lyall for me and give Hope a kiss from me. Love you.” He blew a loud kiss down the phone to Remus, making Remus smile.
“Love you too.”
So far, this was shaping up to be the best day he’d had in a while.

a very happy birthday to everyone's best girl, harry james potter.
in honour of the birthday event that @thethreebroomsticksficfest are doing for you, have a little microfic...
Traditions
He’d been at the Burrow for her birthday before, of course.
But perhaps he’d been too preoccupied in previous years, with the War and all that shit, to notice the rituals which surrounded it - the special song and the cake and ice-cream and the specific order of the day - until this one, when Ginny turned seventeen in a world grieving and rejoicing all at once.
He squeezed her hand as she blew out the candles, a little gesture of support before he slipped unobtrusively into the house. They would understand. They knew that he was still a stranger to the easy intimacy of family life.
They were too polite to ask, but Molly’s pinched lips whenever the Dursleys were mentioned told him as clearly as if she had shouted it that she knew there had been no cake and ice-cream waiting for him on his birthday. He was grateful, in a way, that nobody had ever forced him to confess it out loud: ‘well, I don’t have any birthday traditions because I’m an orphan and I was raised by people who detested me simply for existing.’
He was grateful, in a way, that nobody could entirely understand - and, therefore, that they were too nervous about upsetting him to say anything - that being an orphan is like being a palimpsest. That your life is a constant search for something - a flicker of ink beneath the layers, a single blood-cell in the bone-marrow, a ripped stitch still clinging to a hem - that ties you to your family. He wondered if his dad had liked treacle tart, or if his mum had such a distinctive facial expression that she could be recognised through Polyjuice, or if either of them talked with their hands. He wished he’d asked Sirius. He wished he had time to.
He wished he’d remembered more things about Lupin, so that when Teddy asked him the same - ‘did he talk like me, or walk like me, or think like me’ - he could say something, something authoritative, and mean it.
He wished he’d known more orphans.
Other than the obvious one.
‘What if we’d sat down and said, “hey, having no parents is a fucking trip”? What would have happened then?’ he said aloud, lying on his back on Ginny’s rumpled sheets.
The real answer, of course, was that he’d have been murdered. But, in his fantasy world, they might have compared the faded manuscripts of their ancestry and Harry might have learned of a kindred spirit, engaged in a desperate quest to share something other than a face and a name with a father, or a strange language with a mother. A quest to know if the magpieishness or the love of monologuing ran in the blood. A quest to, quite literally, solve riddles.
There can be even fewer birthday traditions in orphanages than in the Dursleys’ square little house.
Perhaps orphans sit on narrow windowsills and watch the fireworks on New Year’s Eve, and imagine they are for them.
Harry rose and looked out from the window, across the burnished fields of high-summer barley, and tried to imagine that the molten patchwork of the landscape was gleaming just for him; that the world had decked herself in the strawberry ice-cream streak of the evening sky and the golden-snitch glitter of the countryside in order to celebrate him.
The air smelled of honeysuckle and peace.
He took a deep breath.

GGSB Fest 2024 Day 1 - Surprising Recipes
@goodgodfathersiriusblack
For Prompt 1 - Cooking Together
When Sirius can't sleep, he likes to cook. This time, he doesn't have to cook alone.
AO3
***
One of the things that Sirius dislikes about the Order living in his childhood home is that the cooking is always done by Molly.  It’s not that he doesn’t appreciate her efforts, especially since his skills are more than a little rusty after so many years in Azkaban, but he kind of misses cooking.
Knowing that he can’t really sleep anyway, he figures that the only time he’d be allowed to cook is when everyone else is asleep.  Thus, heading down in the middle of the night, he starts taking out various foods and spices.  He’s not really sure what he’d like to make, but he does know that Mrs. Potter always said the best meals were made without a plan or recipe.
He wasn’t always sure that he believed that, but she did make the best meals that Sirius ever tasted (not even Hogwarts could compete), so he tries not to doubt her.  He’s sure that it’s the labor of love that she always put into it.
He begins with a pot, the base, and starts chopping up ingredients.  He doesn’t get very far before he hears, “Sirius?”
He turns and isn’t surprised to see that it’s Harry.  His godson, naturally, is awake because he can’t sleep either.  This makes sense given that he’s only a few weeks away from his most traumatic event – getting kidnapped at the end of the tournament and witnessing Voldemort’s return – and nightmares make sense.
“Hey, kid,” Sirius states.  “Come on in.”
Harry doesn’t hesitate to move beside him.  “What are you doing cooking at one in the morning?”
“Oh, well, I appreciate Molly’s cooking, naturally, but I, er, I miss cooking myself.”
“I didn’t realize you cooked,” Harry says, eyes curious.  “Kind of figured that you wouldn’t have been much of a cook.  My aunt always said that cooking was not a man’s work…”
He trails off as if there’s more to that than suggesting a stereotype but doesn’t want to tell Sirius what it is.
Sirius hums and lets it go.  “Well, your grandmother always insisted that your dad and I know how to take care of ourselves, which included being able to cook for ourselves.”
“My grandmother?” Harry asks, eyes wide.
Sirius is aware that Harry probably doesn’t know much about his family, but it always jars him to hear it from Harry.
He clears his throat.  “Yes, your Potter grandmother, Euphemia.  She liked to go by Effie, but I always called her mum since my mother –”
“Is a horrible hag?” Harry offers, before looking terrified that maybe he shouldn’t have said that.
Sirius laughs.  “Exactly.”
“So, you were close to her, then?”
Sirius nods.  “I was really close to her.  I love your grandfather, too, Fleamont – we called him Monty.  Well, others called him Monty, I called him ‘dad’.  Anyway, I spent a lot of time cooking with Effie since the first summer after first year.”
“What was she like?” Harry asks, as he reaches for some of the ingredients to chop up.  Clearly, he wanted to help cook with him as they chat.
Sirius hums as he, too, focuses on the gumbo that he’s starting to make.  There’re so many things that he could tell Harry about his grandparents that he clearly doesn’t know.
Thus, Sirius just starts talking.
As they begin cooking, he tells him about summers at the Potters, learning how to cook at Effie’s side, and playing games with Monty.  He tells him about all of the things that Effie and Monty loved to do and teach him and James.  Including the recipes and cooking skills that they’re using right now.
He Interrupts the stories with directions when it comes to the dish their making, Harry follows the directions well and after a few false-starts with questions, starts asking for details of everything.
“One of your grandmother’s favorite things when it comes to cooking is just letting things go with the flow, she always had ideas of ingredients, but never a recipe that she wanted to follow.  It made each dish a little bit of a surprise.”
“That’s so… different to what I thought cooking was meant to be,” Harry comments as he stirs the stew they’ve created.
“Oh?” Sirius questions.  “How so?”
“Oh, er, my aunt always said that cooking had to be followed to the letter of the recipe, never altered.”
Given what little he knows about the Dursleys, and Petunia, in particular, he’s surprised to learn that Harry would’ve learned cooking from her.
Oh wait.
It’s a woman’s work – not a man’s work.
That’s what she had taught him.  Just another way to make him feel inferior.  Merlin, he hates the Dursleys.
He coughs.  He doesn’t want to ruin the comfort that they all have had tonight by getting intense about the Dursleys.  “Well, I like your grandmother’s methods better.”
“Me too,” Harry says, grinning.  “Especially since it was a lot smoother, just throwing things in as we like instead of watching the clock and being extremely precise with the ingredients.  Plus, it still smells good.”
Sirius grins.  “Of course it does because we made it with love.”
Harry laughs.  “Made it with love?”
“It’s what your grandmother used to say,” Sirius offers.
“She sounds really lovely.”
“She was,” Sirius says, smiling softly.  “It feels so unfair that you never got to meet her or Monty.  They would’ve adored you.”
“Yeah?” Harry asks.  “You think?”
“Oh, of course,” Sirius as he turns the pot off and dishes out the stew that they created.  “They tried for many years to get James – he was a miracle to them – and James always teased about having a quidditch team of kids to give his parents a chance to dote on all of the grandchildren they’d have.”
“Dad wanted to be like the Weasleys?” Harry questions, eyes bright as they sit at the table to eat the stew.  “Ever since I met them, I wondered what it might’ve been like to be a part of such a big family.  To have brothers to look out for me and tease me… I’ve wanted it more than anything.”
“Aw, kid, I’m sorry that those dreams didn’t pan out – yours, theirs or your dad’s – but it is nice that at least you have been welcomed into the Weasley family,” Sirius states.  “They may drive me a little crazy at times, but I do appreciate that they care about you.”
Harry hums as he takes the first bite of stew and lets out a pleased sound.  “They’ve been great, honestly, but they’re not – not the same as mum and dad.”
Sirius smiles, softly at him.  “No, I mean, they can’t be.  It’s never going to be the same, even as your godfather, I could never replace your dad.  I wouldn’t want to, but saying that, I hope that you know that I love you as my kid, you’re my godson, you mean the world to me and I haven’t done the best job, but I –”
“You’ve done great!” Harry insists, eyes wet.  “You literally wrote to me every day and – and you lived in a cave and ate rats… everything at the Dursleys has been better since your first letter that I used to threaten them – without you, they might’ve locked me up again…”
“They might’ve done what now?” Sirius asks, dropping his spoon in his bowl.  “When – when did they –”
“It’s not important because they aren’t going to do it now,” Harry states, quickly, looking down at his bowl.  “You know that they haven’t been great – you were there, checking on me the night I ran away…”
Sirius opens his mouth to argue that it absolutely does matter, but Harry’s looking up at him, eyes wide and worried, and Sirius knows that getting angry isn’t the answer.  He takes a deep breath.
“I love you, kid, you deserve better than that, but … I’ll let it go because, right now, you’re here with me and they can’t touch you.”
“Thank you,” Harry mutters, softly.
“But I want you to tell me if they ever even consider doing such a thing again.  I don’t care about using magic outside of school or not – I will teach you a new instant method to talk and I will be there fending off the ministry if I have to, alright?  You should never be locked up by your so-called family.”
Harry nods, solemnly and it’s quiet for a minute.
Sirius realizes that things got too intense, and he needs to dial it back.  “So, what do you think of our efforts?”
Harry looks up and smiles.  “It’s brilliant.  Best stew ever – you should make it for everyone one night.”
“You mean, we, don’t you?” Sirius questions.  “I couldn’t have done it without you.”
Harry flushes.  “I just did what you told me to do.”
“Nah, you added your own spin to it, too.  Cooking is an art and you helped me create a work of art.”
He can tell that Harry’s quite pleased.  “Alright, then.  How about we make it again tomorrow night for everyone?”
Sirius grins, “Sounds like plan, kid.”
“Brilliant!”
“It sure is.”

OMG LOOK IT’S A MICROFIC.
Today’s prompt is Floral and I haven’t written for @wolfstarmicrofic in WEEKS and I wasn’t sure if I remembered how but...here we are.
(sorry)
”So what should we do today, sprog?”
Sirius ruffles Harry’s hair as he passes him on his way to the coffee machine, they boy barely looking up.
”I wanna go to mum and dad.”
Sirius turns around, coffee in hand, exchanging a look with Remus over Harry’s head as feels his chest tighten. His husband leans forward a little over the table, doing his best to catch Harry’s gaze but the boy seems more interested in his his bowl of cereals.
”What do you mean, Haz?”
Remus voice is low, careful, and Sirius recognises the worry hinting behind his eyes.
”I want to show them the car Padfoot gived to me,” Harry says, reaching out to pet the blue toy car that was carefully placed on the table next to his breakfast.
Sirius had found it in a Muggle thrift shop. There was absolutely nothing special about, except that Sirius thought it had looked cool, but Harry had been obsessed with it for days now. Even more so when Remus had spelled it to drive on its own. He refused to go anywhere without it, even sleeping with it despite it being nothing but sharp edges and hard metal.
”You want to go to the cemetery?” Remus asks, carefully, and Harry nods decisively before he half-turns in his seat, bright green eyes behind his glasses settling on Sirius.
”Can we go, please, Padfoot?”
Sirius clears his throat, swallowing past the lump in his throat as he forces himself to smile, ”Course we can, sprog.”
Harry seems satisfied with the reply as he turns back again, happily finishing up his breakfast. Afterwards, as they get ready, Harry keeps his new toy close through getting dressed and brushing his teeth, barely willing to let go of it long enough for Sirius to get him into his favourite jumper that Hope had knitted for him, big green dragon on the front.
They apparate to Godric’s Hollow, Remus taking Harry side-along, and Sirius has barely landed when Harry already squirms out of Remus’ arms and down onto the ground. The boy leads the way towards the grave, Sirius and Remus following, and when Remus reaches out to take his hand Sirius lets him.
There’s a sort of ache in his chest as they stop in front of the familiar grave, Harry having already dropped onto his knees on the soft ground. He sets the car carefully next to himself before putting his palm against the headstone, fingers brushing his parents’ names.
Sirius feels Remus arm sneak around his waist and he leans against his husband, dropping his head to Remus’ shoulder as they both watch Harry in silence. The boy is chatting easily to his parents, telling them the story of how Sirius had brought home the car for him the week before even though it hadn’t been his birthday or anything.
Even though Harry asking to go to his parents’ grave had become a bit of a tradition whenever something had happened that he wanted to tell them about, Sirius didn’t think he’d ever get used to it. The pain of their loss was still so real, so present, and Sirius didn’t think it would ever get easier. Harry made it a bit better though, his own sense of loss slightly easier to carry when faced with the boy’s open and straight forward approach to loss and mourning.
”They say they like the car,” Harry informs them after a while as he turns around to look at them, pushing his glasses up on his face in a gesture that’s so achingly James it almost steals Sirius’ breath away. ”Moony, you need to do the flower thing.”
”Yeah, ’course,” Remus nods, sliding his arm from Sirius as he crouches next to Harry.
He twirls his wand, a floral decoration springing from the end of his it. Harry accepts it with a serious expression, placing it carefully against the headstone before he stands. He reaches out for Sirius, motioning that he wants to be picked up at Sirius can’t stop himself, easily scooping him up and holding him close as the boy presses his face against Sirius’ neck.
”Padfoot?” Harry’s voice is muffled.
”Yeah, sprog?”
”Can we have ice cream for lunch, please?”
Sirius feels himself smile, warmth spreading through him as he meets Remus gaze, who merely rolls his eyes with a small smile.
”You know what?” Sirius grins at his husband, lowering his voice as if he was telling Harry a secret, ”I think we can.”
Harry gives a satisfied little hum, settling himself comfortably in Sirius arms.
”That makes me very happy.”
Sirius chuckles lowly as they start walking back towards the apparition point, ”I’m glad,” he mumbles, pressing a quick kiss to the boy’s head.

dear miss padfootastic: harry learning he's gonna be a dad and promptly losing his mind and going to the only person he can think of for dad advice: sirius.
gosh miss imp i have so many thoughts about this!!!!!! (i wrote almost all of this and realised that i did it post birth lol bc that’s the moment that made the most sense to me but we can easily doctor it to be pre birth as well!!)
- the first time harry holds james sirius in his hands, he has to dip out in three minutes flat to puke all over the nearest washroom. it’s sirius holding him, brushing his hair back, and soothing him on the dirty hospital floor. tells him that he did something super similar when he held harry for the first time too. it doesn’t hit harry then.
- when they’re all back at home, the first few days, it’s all a sort of frantic autopilot where he has no time to think. it’s only when things calm down a bit that he realised how his hands shake and his pulse races when he thinks about being a father. it’s not…debilitating bc it’s his duty, one he asked for, and harry’s never been one to back down from a duty. but it’s still—he doesn’t want to be a passable dad, he wants to be a good one.
- so he goes to the best one he knows: sirius.
- the thing here is, harry thinks he’s gonna be a terrible dad. he was abused and neglected in his most developmental stages of life, never really knew what unconditional love felt like let alone parental, and does not trust himself around a vulnerable defenceless child. knowledge of his anger and it’s consequences does not help.
- but also to consider: sirius had almost an exact similar experience. he was equally terrified to be a godfather for harry bc he never trusted himself w delicate things. so he knows, intimately, what’s it’s like to fear yourself.
- it doesn’t get better with one conversation. sirius knew this going in. what he does, instead, is help harry become confident by being there, always, without fail. makes him see that he’s got this down pat, and his child loves and trusts and adores him and there’s no greater privilege than that. he’s there every single time as a safety net, to tell harry that nothing will go wrong, yes, but also to prove he doesn’t need anyone else.
- it’s also a whole lot of ‘omg this is so difficult, you did this for me?????’ and just. realisations about ‘omg u changed my diaper??? i peED ON YOU??????’ that basically make it impossible for him to look sirius in the eye for a few days.
- another point to consider: harry sees sirius with jemmy from an outsider pov yeah? and he can finally see what others have all this time: how sirius looks at someone he loves wholeheartedly, how much he adores his children. and it’s humbling and awe-inspiring and a bit terrifying. imagining the full force of that love directed towards him, making him wonder what he did to deserve it
- there’s a loooooot of midnight/asscrack of morning firecalls/mirror calls etc for emergency assistance bc ‘are babies supposed to sleep like tho at! he’s been farting all night sirius iTS SO BAD! omg his poop is green padfoot is my baby toxic?????’ ykno. normal new dad stuff.
(and this is random but there’s also one,,,,forbidden conversation with sirius about it he’d ever hated him bc harry had some very unsavoury thoughts in the beginning when he had teddy that he hates himself for to this day and if he has to hear his godfather say he didn’t want him to get rid of them then he’ll do it. it’s a tough but necessary one)

What if… Sirius obliviated himself? (Reg’s POV)
Regulus Black had always been forgotten. His parents had left him at home because they forgot they had a kid, even his friends would forget when he left, but he never- ever- thought Sirius would forget him.
He walked up to Sirius, a small smile on his face. They had finally fixed their relationship.
“Do I know you?” Sirius had prompted, shrugging it off.
Regulus’ smile had faded,” is that a joke?” He asked gently, please be a joke, his mind begged.
“Sorry dude, if I knew you I’m sorry. If we hooked up then I was probably drunk.” He shrugged and Regulus gagged at the reminder. Brother, his mind chanted.
“I- uh,” he hesitated,”sorry I thought you were…. Someone else.” He managed to choke out his voice incredibly small.
Sirius gave him a pitying smile and shrugged, going back to his meal as 3 people Regulus knew came in.
First was James. He looked at Regulus with the saddest look Regulus had ever seen.
Second was Peter. He watched the interaction before slowly shrinking back.
Third was Remus. He placed a hand on Regulus’ shoulder,”Regulus.” He whispered as Sirius looked at the three, confused.
“Remus.” He whispered back,”why is- Remus.” He tried to ask but the words didn’t come out.
“Sirius,” he deflected instead,”go play with James.” He talked like he was talking to a little kid, but Sirius followed like one.
“He couldn’t handle…it.” He reasoned turning back to Regulus,”he couldn’t anymore.”
“The- the memories? Or the- me?” He asked dreading the answer.
Remus sighed,”not you. Never you. He’d have nightmares, nightmares about his mom, his dad- Regulus you have to understand.”
“But he forgot me.” He whispered,”he chose to forget me.”
“Regulus,” Remus pleaded,”you-“
“I was the connection,” he realized slowly, “every memory of me was a memory of that.”
“Regulus,” he begged,”you have to understand.”
“I-I do,” he whispered because he did, in some twisted way he understood,”but I’m still allowed to hurt?” The way he said it sounded more like a question than a statement.
Remus lowered his head, staring at the floor,”Merlin, yes, Regulus. Of course you can hurt. It does hurt. It hurts everyone.”
Regulus stayed silent before saying something barely above a whisper,”I should go.”
Remus nodded and stayed still, letting Regulus go.
Regulus tried so hard not to cry as he half-ran. He needed Barty, Pandora, Evan, even Dorcas. But Barty being Barty seemed to always know when he needed him because he came barreling into a chest. He looked up to see Barty’s features before an arm wrapped around his waist and led him to their room.
“Shoot.” He sighed once they were both sitting on the bed. And regulus stayed silent but Barty’s words weren’t a command it was an invitation- one he wanted to take.
So while sniffling, mumbling, and blurring words together he explained everything. Poured his heart out to his best friend. And Barty stayed silent the whole time just letting Regulus talk. Finally regulus stopped, needing breath.
“So…” Barty prompted, “that’s shit.”
And regulus let out a small chuckle, a smile on a tear stained face, “movie?” He asked desperately needing a distraction.
Barty nodded grabbing the remote and letting Regulus cuddle into him.
Regulus still hated the fact his brother couldn’t remember him, although he was perfectly fine with distracting himself and staying in denial. And it was a little better now that Evan and Pandora had joined (he wasn’t sure when they came in).

Part 1 of 5
Prompt: Yearning
Telling stories of James and Lily was difficult.
Sirius could readily admit that to himself. But that didn’t matter. What mattered was Harry, and the fact that Harry had been denied this part of himself and his heritage for nearly six years now. So it didn’t matter that even saying his best friend’s name made him feel like he was seventeen again and drowning in sadness and memory.
What mattered was Harry sitting in front of him, Lily’s green eyes shining, wanting in a way he never was.
Getting Harry to tell anyone he wanted something was a bigger task than killing Voldemort. He had been so obviously scarred by the Dursleys in so many ways – but the biggest way, in Sirius’ opinion, was just how insignificant he considered himself.
Remus had told him to be patient, and Sirius wasn’t an idiot. He’d known he had to be.
And Harry had blossomed. He was still cautious, still careful not to ever openly state he wanted something, but he’d grown into the confident young man before him, who smiled freely while looking into his eyes.
“I’ll be fine, Sirius, really,” he was saying.
“You have Hedwig?” Sirius fussed anyway. “And the emergency portkey? And the snack bag? And you’re sure Susan is bringing Bambi?”
“Dad!” Harry laughed, and Sirius felt his heart skip a beat, like at every time Harry called him that. It wasn’t often – only casually emotional moments, but Sirius still loved it, he still treasured every time.
“Do you think my parents are haunting us?” Harry’d asked one day, and Sirius hadn’t been able to breathe for a moment through the pain and the memories, knowing his godson wasn’t asking about actual ghosts - that discussion, painful as it had been, had already taken place.
“I think—” he’d started carefully, knowing he was, for all that he was only twenty-nine and fresh out of Azkaban, one of the only true guides and grown-ups in Harry’s life, “That we can never know that for certain. But if you’re asking if that’s a bad thing, I don’t think it is.”
“Why?” Harry had frowned, swinging his legs, “Muggles always talk about ‘haunting’ like it’s a bad thing.”
Sirius had had many years to contemplate the intricacies of grief and how ephemeral life was, but he didn’t know how to express that other than through wildness - sex, alcohol, cigarettes and recklessness. “I don’t think it can be as obvious as good or bad,” he told the quiet boy finally. “But – we carry their love, their memories along with us on our own lives. And if they’re there, they not only see the bad stuff, but they see the good, they see the best.”
He hoped James and Lily hadn’t seen how their boy had been treated by his so-called blood family. He yearned to know if they thought he was doing a good job raising him.
At least he knew James would’ve never had a problem with Sirius taking on the mantle of ‘dad’. James had always, always wanted the people he loved to be happy, and nothing more or less. As long as both Sirius and Harry were happy, he would’ve been fine with it.
God, and Merlin, and everyone, he yearned for James.
“—eleven years old now. I’m all grown up!” Harry was saying importantly.
Sirius smiled and ruffled his hair. “You sure are, bud. Can’t blame an old man for being cautious, though, can you?”
Harry rolled his eyes. “I know I call you old, Sirius, but you’re only thirty-one. That’s, like, youth for wizards.” He paused. “Okay, maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration. Whatever. You’ll take care of Sanju, won’t you?”
“Mooncalves don’t really need caretaking, but yes, you know I will.” Sirius dragged Harry into another hug, telling himself not to cry. Harry wasn’t even on the Express yet, and Sirius already yearned for it to be Christmas.
This type of yearning, though, was much better than others.
“Be careful, okay?” He added quietly. “You know that there are other Noble Houses’ heirs in your year – many children of suspected Death Eaters.”
“I know,” Harry his beloved hooligan of a child was replaced by Harry the rising political and business star for a moment. “I’ll introduce myself to those I haven’t met before. I’ll try to find out the lay of the land before the vote.”
“Don’t forget to have fun, though. Explore the castle. Fly. Make some new friends.  Bask in first-year lessons, they get very hard soon. Just don’t challenge anyone to duels before you’ve gotten used to your wand. Don’t sneak out after curfew alone without telling anyone – someone should always know where you are.”
“I will, promise.” He hesitated, and then in a whisper so faint Sirius could barely catch it, “You’ll write?”
Sirius swallowed, wanting all over again to find and murder the Dursleys. “Of course. Are you kidding? And I want return letters from you at least three times a week. I don’t care what you put in them. Tell me what Ron has been eating, for all I care.”
Harry smirked. “That’d take three parchments at least.”
The ten-minute warning whistle rang out. Sirius’ heart clenched as he hugged his godson one last time. “I love you, Harry.”
“Love you too, Sirius.” Harry blinked up at him as though he were about to cry. “I’ll miss you.”
“I’ll miss you too, but just wait for it. At Christmas, you’ll be begging me to let you stay.”
Harry laughed. “I know I’ll love Hogwarts, but I promise, nothing will make me want to stay there when I can come home.”
Sirius swallowed. It was all he had yearned for, back in the first hard days when Harry had been so wary and so cold, when trust between them had seemed a hopeless thing. For Harry to consider his place home, and for him to be the kind of child James had been and Sirius and Remus had not: who loved Hogwarts, but never preferred it to their own home.
“Go find Ron, Susan and Neville,” he said. “Leave me to my maudlin musings.”
Harry clicked his tongue. “You are going out with Moony and the Weasleys tonight, right? No musing by yourself?”
“Yes, mother.”
“Harry!” They heard Ron’s voice, and turned to see the ginger boy waving enthusiastically through a window next to a hastily backing away Neville. “C’mon, mate! You’ll miss the train!”
“Coming!” Harry called back, and he turned, grinning brightly, to his godfather. “Bye, Sirius!”
“Bye, Harry.” He said softly, watching him climb onto the train, run to his friends’ compartment and collapse on the seat next to Susan, who was trying to get Bambi to behave. The haughty half-kneazle jumped onto its owner’s lap with a loud purr, and he could see Susan throw her hands up in exasperation.
“Sirius!” He heard Arthur call, and turned.
“Hey, Arthur,” he said. “Boys all aboard?” Ginny gave a sniff, peeking out from behind her father’s legs. “Don’t worry, Ginny, the year’ll fly by and you’ll be the one going to Hogwarts soon enough.”
The girl smiled weakly. “I hope so.”
“Are you okay, Sirius?” Arthur asked in an undertone. “The first time can be hard.”
He watched his godson squabble with his friends, punching Susan on the arm as he laughed. So different from the boy he’d been four years ago, when Sirius had first taken him in.
There would be dangers, he knew that, but he’d equipped Harry to the best of his ability to face them. He knew his godson would not shy away from adventure.
He was, after all, his parents’ son.
The train began to chug and move forward, thick smoke pouring out, and Ginny ran beside it, waving frantically to her brothers with tears running down her face.
“Fred, get in the train properly! Ginny, come straight back!” He heard Molly scream, and laughed as he waved to Harry, who pressed his face to the window, grinning and waving back, jostling for a place there with Ron and Susan, who were also waving.
“I reckon we’ll be fine,” he replied to Arthur, feeling the yearning and yet the peace he’d made with it wrap around his heart.

Soundless Love - Chapter 9.2
A tear slides over Harry’s cheek. He can see Neville in the corner of his eye. He hasn’t moved since Harry spotted him on the floor. Harry’s chest is heavy and he opens his mouth to breathe, only air doesn’t seem to make it to his lungs. Why did he run to the library? He should have got help. Draco wasn’t in danger until Harry showed up. Pettigrew would have left him alone. And then maybe, Neville would still be alive now. And Draco’s wand wouldn’t be pointed towards Harry.
Pettigrew laughs. “You’re as disgusting as Sirius and Lupin,” he says.
Harry swallows. He wants to close his eyes and forget this day ever happened. But he can’t look away from Draco. Draco’s neck is exposed, as Pettigrew still holds his head pulled back by his hair. His beautiful hair. Harry wishes he’d got the chance to feel it. He still wonders if it’s truly as soft as it looks. Not that Draco would ever let him. It’s clear how he feels about Harry and his sexuality. But that doesn’t change the fact that Harry still wants him. More than anything he’s ever wanted in this world.
“Sometimes I wonder,” Pettigrew continues. “If it was them that tipped me over the edge. They’re a disgrace to wizards.”
“You’re wrong,” Harry whispers. He can’t find his voice. James had warned them that Pettigrew was dangerous. But they didn’t listen. And now, Neville is gone. He would have moved by now if he wasn’t. And it won’t be long and then Harry and Draco will die too. It will all be over. Why did Harry break his promise? He should have listened to his dad. He should have kept them all safe.
“The Dark Lord will return,” Pettigrew says. “You will see how right the world will be when he does.” Pettigrew bends his head to the side. His front teeth stick out of his mouth. He’s got a pointy nose and small dark eyes. He’s not only a rat in name and actions. He’s also a rat in his looks. A disgusting rat.
Harry lifts his wand. He wants to hurt Pettigrew. Make him pay for all the pain he caused. By his betrayal. His sick idea of what the world should be like. And all because he couldn’t stand it that Uncle Sirius and Uncle Remus are gay? Is that truly the reason why Pettigrew turned on his best friends and gave up the location of Neville’s parents to the Dark Lord? That just makes it worse. It makes it personal.
“What do you plan to do, boy?” Pettigrew asks. He turns his wand back to Draco’s throat. “You better drop that wand, or your little boyfriend dies.”
“Don’t,” Harry stammers. “He’s got nothing to do with this. He isn’t like me.”
“Then drop that wand,” Pettigrew says.
Harry lowers his arm and lets his wand slip out of his fingers. The wand falls on the floor and rolls towards Pettigrew and Draco. Harry swallows as Pettigrew points his wand towards Harry again. There is nothing left that Harry can do to save his own life. He’s defenceless and lost.
“You’re a fool,” Pettigrew says.
Harry closes his eyes and waits for the spell to hit. Only it doesn’t.
Pettigrew groans.
Harry’s eyes fly open. Pettigrew stands bend over. His wand free hand clutching his stomach. Draco rolls over the floor. His eyes search and then he reaches out for Harry’s wand. Pettigrew lifts his wand. A red light flashes from it. It goes straight for Harry. He should duck. Get out of the blast zone. Only Harry is frozen. He lifts his hands to stop the spell.
The red light slams into an invisible shield in front of Harry. Draco sits on the floor, Harry’s wand in his hand. He smiles at Harry and then he turns around. He faces Pettigrew. He’s going to stop him. Helpless Draco, the boy Harry thought he had to protect and save. He’s going to be the one that saves the day. The one that captures Pettigrew. It’s so unlikely, and so amazing at the same time. Harry wants to kiss him again. He knows he can’t. And he won’t. But he wants to, so badly.
“Too late,” Pettigrew says. He points Draco’s wand at his head and then starts to turn. He shrinks and Draco’s binding spell misses him. In seconds a small rat sits on the library floor. Harry lunges for the animal. But it’s small and fast. The rat runs away, out of sight.
“Fuck,” Harry says. He turns around and then spots Neville on the floor. The next fuck that comes out of Harry’s mouth is softer. Slowly he crawls towards Neville’s body. Please don’t be dead is all he can think. Mum and dad will kill me if you are. So please, don’t be dead.
With care, Harry turns Neville around. His eyes are closed and his face looks pale. Harry bends over his head and looks for any sign of life. A soft wind comes from Neville’s nose. He’s breathing. Harry drops his head on Neville’s chest for a second. “Thank Merlin,” he says. Neville is alive. Hurt and unconscious, but alive. James and Lily aren’t going to kill Harry. They’ll still be mad as hell when they hear what happened, but at least they won’t be able to blame Harry for losing Neville.
There are sounds in the distance. Harry sits up straight when he hears Remus shout his name.
“We’re here,” Harry shouts back. He turns and spots Draco on the floor. He still has Harry’s wand in his trembling hand. Tears stream down his face and his eyes are fixed on Neville.
“He’s alive,” Harry signs. Only Draco doesn’t seem to see it. Harry stands up and takes a step towards Draco. A hand grabs his arm and Harry is spun around. Remus is pale and his eyes are large when Harry looks at them.
“Is he still here?” Remus asks.
Harry shakes his head. “He got away,” he says.
Remus pulls Harry against his chest. His arms are firm around Harry and it feels good. But Harry needs to get to Draco. He needs to tell him that all is okay. And thank him. If it hadn’t been for Draco, Harry would be lying dead on the floor. Draco saved him. With magic. He performed some amazing spell work without uttering a word. So Harry pushes against Remus and tries to step out of the hold.
“We need to get Longbottom to the hospital wing,” Professor Snape says. Harry looks to the side and sees that Snape sits next to Neville. “It’s nothing serious, just a powerful Stunning Spell. He’ll have a nice headache for a couple of days.”
“You’re sure?” Remus asks. He still won’t let go of Harry. Maybe he’s afraid that if he lets go, that Harry will run off after Pettigrew.
“Yes, Lupin, I’m sure,” Snape snaps. He’s back on his feet and moves out of Harry’s view.
“Uncle Remus, I need to,” Harry starts. He tries to step back again, out of Remus’ hold.
“Just let me hold you for a little longer,” Remus says. “When Ron and Hermione told me what you were doing. I didn’t think I would find you here alive.”
“But Draco,” Harry protests.
Remus chuckles. “He’s okay. Professor Snape has him.”
Harry doesn’t think that Professor Snape will be able to calm anyone. But he gets that Uncle Remus needs to hold him for a little while longer, so he doesn’t fight against the hold anymore.
“I’m sorry,” Harry says. He’s trembling on his feet. “I didn’t think.”
Remus pets Harry’s hair. “It’s okay,” he says. “You’re safe now. You’re all safe now.”
“But Pettigrew got away,” Harry says.
Remus places his hands on Harry’s shoulders and looks at his face. “You’re alive. That’s all that matters,” he says.
A tear escapes Harry’s eye. “He said he did what he did because of you and Uncle Sirius,” he stutters.
Within seconds, Harry is pulled back against Remus’ chest. “Don’t you listen to that man for one second,” Remus says. “He’s wrong. He was scared and a coward. He still is. He would have faced us by now if he wasn’t. He needs to tell himself something to make right what he did. But nothing he says will ever be true. He was our friend, and for years he didn’t mind that Sirius and I were together. It’s not our fault he fell for Voldemort’s lies. It’s nobody’s fault but his own.”
Harry clutches Remus his clothes in his hands. He doesn’t want Remus to let him go. He lets out an uncontrollable whimper and closes his eyes.
“Harry,” Remus says. “It’s okay. You’re safe now.”
“I thought,” Harry mutters. “I thought Neville was dead.”
Remus doesn’t let go of Harry. He holds him close. It’s the only reason why Harry stays upright. His legs are weak and Harry feels light-headed. There is movement around them. Professor McGonagall orders others around. Professor Snape escorts Draco out of the room and Madam Pomfrey takes care of Neville. And in the meantime, Harry just stands there, held by Remus. Until Remus asks him if he’s ready to go.

King and Queen | S.B
Paring: Sirius Black X Fem!Potter!Reader, James Potter X Fem!Twin!Reader
Summary: James goes through a lot during his time at Hogwarts but his sister is always by his side.
Inspiration: Click
A/N: If this comes off insensitive to anyone please let me know and I will remove this.
James Potter was a handful. From the minute he was born, he had this gleam in his hazel eyes that raged and burned with trouble. His twin, Y/n Potter, was almost the opposite. The soft smile that laid on her features and the glitter of calamity in her eyes. Euphemia and Fleamont were in for a lot the minute their twins were born.
Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is most comparative to having a web browser up with one too many tabs. James had always been unable to focus and was naturally messy. Truth be told, he thought it was normal, just as everyone else did. It wasn’t until his second year at Hogwarts did he realize something was genuinely wrong with him.
Remus told him that he had this muggle thing called “dyslexia,” which was a difficulty in interpreting words, letters, and other symbols. However, it never affected his overall intelligence because everyone knew that Remus Lupin was indeed and wholly brilliant. It got James wondering, did his inability to focus, be organized, and hyperactivity have a deeper meaning?
His twin - Y/n - was quite the opposite. She made quick friends with Remus, Sirius, and Peter, who were close friends of her twin. Y/n was top of their class, creating a friendly competition with Remus, but she was always able to focus. Often she would hyper-focus, which would leave her working for over five hours at a time without realizing it. In those times, James would have to snap her out of it.
Over the summer, James expressed his concerns to his parents. He was talking about how this could be a real issue he’s facing using Remus’ dyslexia as an example. Eventually, they gave in, letting James go to a muggle doctor. James had to fill out a questionnaire that would come back with his results in one week. That week was probably the longest week of his life. Nonetheless, his test results had come back positive.
Fleamont and Euphemia would be lying if they were surprised. After hearing about the disorder, it was almost the definition of their eldest son. Fortunately for James, the muggles had come up with a cure - no, not a cure - dammit, what was it again?
Impede the symptoms! That’s what those muggle pills do. James was required to take two pills a day, one in the morning and once at night. Y/n was in charge of making sure he did so because - more times than he’d like to admit - he would forget everything if it wasn’t for Y/n.
In third year, James was as energetic as ever while getting on the Hogwarts Express, “Aren’t you excited, Y/n?!”
She chuckled, “Yes, but Merlin, you don’t need to literally jump with joy.”
“But I’m excited!”
“I know that.”
They made their way to the compartment that held Remus, who was reading a book. James sat in front of him while Y/n took her seat beside Remus, “‘Ello Remus.”
“Hey, Potter pair.”
Y/n sighed, and James groaned, “That nickname needs to go away.”
“I quite like it.” Remus stated smugly, “Suits you both.”
“What’s that suppose to mean?” Y/n accused falsely, “It means that wherever one of you are, the other isn’t that far behind.” Remus replied.
James had zoned out already, and Y/n snapped in his face, “Take your pills?”
“Forgot.” James muttered guiltily, “Oh Godric.” She whispered.
“Pills?”
“James went to a muggle doctor this summer.”
Remus quirked an eyebrow, “Did you now?”
“Got diagnosed with ADHD.” James informed, and Remus looked amiss, “Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder.”
“Ah, I’ve heard of that.” Remus said, and James smiled sheepishly, “I feel kinda odd, like out of place.”
“Why?”
“Dunno, just, why can't I be normal?”
“You are normal, James.” Y/n reassured, “And anyone who says differently obviously doesn’t care about you.”
The compartment door slammed open, “Who doesn’t care about who?”
Remus snorted, “Ever the dramatics, huh, mate?”
“‘Course.” Sirius flopped down beside James, “It comes with my charm and devilishly good looks.”
“Ah, yes.” Y/n said, chuckling, “Don’t you see how I’m swooning for you?”
The back of her palm was against her forehead, “Come off it.” James swatted at her and then elbowed Sirius, “Better not make my sister swoon.”
Sirius chuckled and shrugged, “Can’t help it. I’m just that irresistible.”
The four of them laughed at Sirius’ dramatics and continued talking about the new term. Remus and Y/n were talking about books they couldn’t wait to read. Remus was even kind enough to gift her some muggle books he bought over the summer holiday. Sirius and James bickered about what pranks to do this year, along with which ones were better.
Third-year was fun. It was a year of flooding corridors, turning Slytherin robes red and blasting music in the common room after a Gryffindor victory. James was a brilliant Quidditch Chaser, and Y/n was a fantastic Seeker. Nothing was quite like the Potter pair. Something about them was just unforgettable.
Maybe that’s why Sirius was so fond of her. Something about the Potters made people around them smile on the hardest of days. They made sure that every moment was a night to remember. Every memory was worth reliving. So adventurous, so reckless, yet so kind and loving.
By the time fifth year rolled around, Sirius Orion Black had fallen off a cliff into a lake called love. Sirius completely submerged himself in love for Y/n Potter. The younger twin by just 20 minutes, but something about her was so divine. Was it her silk and glittering h/c hair? No - maybe it was her gleaming e/c eyes. Perhaps it was for her strive for adventure and extreme kindness.
Nonetheless, Sirius fell hard.
And who better to tell than James Potter himself?
Causally - as usual - Sirius opened the door to the Marauders dorm. It was empty aside from the brunet boy with glasses on the bridge of his nose. His hazel eyes were focused on a textbook - Potions textbook - maybe it was to impress Lily. Sirius couldn’t care less, so he pulled the chair out in front of the desk and sat before James.
“Mate, I need your help.”
“Running from Filch?”
“No. Something- Something worse.”
“Something worse?” The textbook shut loudly.
Sirius nodded, “Way worse.”
“Alright then, come into my office.” James teased, and Sirius grinned.
It was silent, “I’m in love with your sister.”
James sputtered, “Excuse me?”
“I’m in love with Y/n.”
“No, no.” James waved his hand horizontally, “I heard you.”
“Then what else would you like me to say?” Sirius asked.
“Literally anything else.”
“Sorry, mate.” Sirius muttered, “I- I really didn’t mean to.”
James chuckled and wiped his hand across his face, “I suppose you can’t really stop love, huh?”
“You really can’t.” Sirius agreed, “I tried. I promise I tried.”
“It’s not that big of a deal late.” James assured, and Sirius looked at him with wide eyes, “I trust you just-“
“Just?”
“I’m worried about her.” James completed, “I- I worry about her every night.”
Sirius softened, “It’s like you with Regulus-“ James continued before Sirius could interject, “And don’t pretend. Your silencing charms are bloody terrible.”
“I know you still care for Regulus, you worry about him every night, and I do the same for Y/n, except my silencing charms are better.” James teased sightly, “I trust you, Sirius. You’re the brother I never got but always wanted. You know, the brother I can play Quidditch with, rough around with, the brother who’s just as sneaky and mischievous as I.”
“But Y/n is still my blood. She's my twin, my best friend, my partner in crime. She was the mind behind my pranks before Remus.” James elaborated and then smirked, “Remus and Y/n make a great team, ya’ know?”
“They are quite brilliant.”
“Anyway, what I’m trying to say is, take care of her?” James looked like the eleven-year-old boy again, “Don’t make her a fling and don’t make this temporary.”
“Y/n is a strong woman, and she isn’t for weak men. I’ll be honest,” James chuckled, “She doesn’t need a man. She doesn’t even really need me. I need her more than she needs me. Regardless, take care of her. She deserves a man worthy of her. Someone that’ll get her ice cream at 4 a.m. because she’s craving it. Someone that’ll go on sporadic trips with her. Someone that’ll understand that after a hard day, all she wants is a book and coffee.”
Sirius was appalled; he’d never seen James look so passionate, “Growing up, mum always told me to be a gentleman. I know it may not seem like it sometimes, but she always raised me as one. To hold a door for them, push and push in their chairs for them, give them my jacket even if I’ll freeze.”
“Those kinda things. Dad said I should practice on Y/n, and I did. From then, Y/n always got treated like a queen, and she deserves no less. I won't lie, my parents treat me like a king too, and I don’t want any less either.” James explained, “Be the king that’s worthy of my sister.”
“That’s all I ask of you.”
Sirius nodded, “I’d be honored to serve her as my queen.”
“And if you show her no less, she’ll spit you out like chewing gum.”
He shuttered, “I hate how accurate that phrase is.”
James laughed, “I know her more than you think.”
By sixth year they were dating. Sirius would be lying if he wasn’t eternally shitting himself when Y/n said yes to going to Hogsmeade with him, alone, as a date. In fact, James almost wanted to throw him a party for finally not being a little bitch and asking out his sister. This party consisted of a bottle of firewhiskey and chocolate because that’s all that was in the boy's dormitory. But a party nonetheless.
When Lily rejected James for the last time before graduation, he was utterly heartbroken. He’d spent and dedicated seven years of his life to this gorgeous woman. Despite all his efforts and all his charms, she still wasn’t interested. James tried. He really tried. He wanted Lily so bad. His heart broke when she said her final words of goodbye.
“I’m sorry, Potter. Maybe in another life, just not this one.”
Tears had ebbed at the corner of his eyes as he made his way back into the castle from the Black Lake. In the common room, where he felt like he had just got dowsed in water. James made his way to the girl's dormitory. His hand curled into a fist and knocked lightly on the wooden door. Shuffling was heard from the other side, and the door finally opened, revealing his sister.
Without warning, James crashed into her arms, forcing his nose in the crook of her neck, “Woah.”
“Are you okay, James?”
His body shook with sobs as he shook his head no, “It’s okay. Let’s go lay down, okay?”
Gently she led him to her bed. He curled up beneath the navy blue comforter and placed his head on the silk pillow sheets. If he tried hard enough, he could forget the way Lily’s hair smelt today or the way her green eyes glistened in the sun. Now engulfed in his sister's scent, trying to remove every feeling for Lily possible, he dug his nose deeper into the comforter.
Y/n sat beside him, her back to the headboard, and ran her fingers through James’ already untied hair, “What's got you so worked up?”
“It’s done.”
“What’s done?”
“L- Lily and I.” James choked, “She- She really doesn’t want me.”
A new wave of tears overcame him, and Y/n continued to try and soothe him, “Well, she’s a tosser.”
James narrowed his eyes, “James, you know I love her. She's my best friend, but if she can’t see what’s right in front of her, then she’s an idiot.”
“Can I- Can I stay here tonight?” He asked hesitantly.
“You sure you don’t want me to stay at your dorm?” Y/n questioned, “Because you know who sleeps here.”
“Will you stay with me?”
“Till the end.”
After a couple of minutes, Y/n and James made their way down the steps to the boy's side. They walked up more steps and finally made it to the boy's dormitory. James collapsed on his bed in the left corner of the room, and Sirius perked up at seeing his girlfriend enter the room.
“Whatcha doin’ here, love?”
“Staying with my brother.”
Sirius nodded and stood up to hug her, gently pecking her forehead, “If you guys need anything, let me know, ‘kay?”
“Thanks, Siri.”
Gently Y/n pulled back the maroon curtain and sat down beside him again. James reached for her hand and intertwined their fingers. Something they used to do as kids. When a thunderstorm would go by, James would always seek sanctuary in his sister's comfort.
He fell asleep that night, knowing he was safe, loved, and knew that someone cared about him. Even if Lily didn’t love him, at least someone else did. He had his boys, and he had his sister. Right now, that’s all he needed beside him: Screw Lily and her idiot decision skills. Y/n was right; she was a complete tosser.
When Hogwarts was over, James and Y/n got a flat together. Sirius, Remus, and Peter got one only a floor above. Realistically this wasn’t the plan. James always planned to buy a house with Lily, but he was still healing, and after everything going on, it was vital for him to hold his sister close to him.
Euphemia and Fleamont barely lived to see their children graduate. Not too long afterward had died due to the horrid dragon pocks. It devastated both twins and Sirius. While Sirius wasn’t their true child, he very well could’ve. Euphemia noticed Sirius’s lingering stares on Y/n and the loopy smile that graced his features.
She was the one who got Sirius to man up. She was the one who gave him advice. She was the one who told him what books were her favorite, which chocolate she liked the best, her favorite quills. Euphemia was one of the main components in getting Sirius to date her daughter, and when it finally happened, the parents couldn’t have been happier.
James’ ADHD still remained even in his adulthood, making regular everyday tasks much harder and twice as long. Most of the time, the pills were able to help him complete those tasks. But sometimes, when Y/n wasn’t there to remind him, he would miss his days. When Y/n got home from work, she had barely taken off her shoes to see the apartment spotless.
It was a pleasant surprise, but James was never really one to clean, not that she really minded, but the apartment didn’t have a speck of dust on it. Hesitantly she put her keys on the island along with her bag.
“James!”
“Yes, Y/n?”
He appeared in the kitchen where Y/n was, “Um, did you clean the apartment?”
“Yes, I did!” James nodded enthusiastically.
Y/n sighed and gave her brother a sweet smile, “What did you not do today?”
“So, you know how you told me to go to the pharmacy?”
“Mhm.” Y/n nodded, “Indeed I do.”
“Well, they were out of my meds.” James informed, “I have to wait a week.”
“Oh, Merlin.”
“On the bright side!” James was already causing her a headache, “It’s gonna be a fantastic week! I’ve got so many things planned for us! We’re gonna go-“
James continued to ramble as Y/n grabbed her keys, bag and slipped back on her shoes, “I’m going to Sirius’!”
“Thought you were my sister.” James faked pouting, and Y/n smiled, “I love you, but you’re crazy.”
“I love you too!” He yelled as she closed the door.

Prompt 31 - Midnight Kiss
@wolfstarmicrofic Prompt 31, word count 912
It had been a bit rushed, but somehow they’d managed to pull it all together. Sirius had taken over the entirety of Potter Manor. Well, Effie and Monty had given it to him before he’d even managed to finish asking them if they could have the wedding there.
They’d set up the ballroom with rows of chairs and a raised platform in front of them. Mary had placed huge vases of white and dark blue flowers on the platform as decoration and strung fairy lights all across the back wall behind them. She’d artfully bent the wires of a few sets to form the outline of a crescent moon and a star. Sirius had nearly cried when he saw it.
Lily and Marlene wound tiny bunches of White Jasmine flowers around all the chairs. Picked by Lily for their delicate star shapes and sweet-smelling perfume. Everything else Effie had handled, refusing to take no for an answer. “I am your mother, Sirius, and I am doing this.”
She was a force to be reckoned with. She had been so efficient that everything was ready the day before the ceremony was due to start.
Sirius and Remus were dressing in separate rooms. Sirius had demanded that he get James as best man and to help him get ready. Remus had asked Peter to be his best man but said he was more than capable of dressing himself.
There was a knock on Remus’s door just as he was buttoning the last button on his shirt.
“Come in.” He said. The door slowly opened, revealing Lyall Lupin. Remus was shocked. “Dad? I, I didn’t think you’d come.” He swallowed nervously. He never knew how his father was going to react.
“What, think I’d miss walking my only son down the aisle?” Lyall asked with amusement. “Sirius came to see me with this very, very long speech. Demanding that I be here for you or he’d make my life hell. I found that I couldn’t refuse. Mainly because I’d already decided I was coming, but he seemed so determined to say what he came to say that I didn’t have the heart to disappoint him.” Remus stared at his father and then burst into laughter. Feeling even more love than he already did with Sirius.
Soon the knock came to say it was time, and Remus and Lyall followed Marlene out.
Mary would be waiting for them as she was officiating everything.
Marlene and Lily were maids of honour and bridesmaids combined. Lily would be leading Sirius. Marlene was leading Remus.
“Ready, lad?” Lyall asked, holding out his arm for Remus to take.
“More than I’ve ever been.” He grinned, linking their arms.
Sirius went first, walking behind Lily with Effie and Monty on either side of him.
Remus, Lyall and Marlene followed as soon as Sirius had reached the front.
Remus took a moment to take Sirius in. They were wearing matching suits in a deep midnight blue, almost black.
“How do you look so much better than I do?” He whined at Sirius, drooling over how the cut showed off his slim waist and thick-muscled arms.
“I could ask the same question, sweetheart,” Sirius replied, biting his bottom lip and raking his eyes lustfully over Remus.
“Rain it in, lover boys,” Mary said as she cleared her throat, preparing to begin.
Sirius heard very little of what Mary said. He was sure it was beautiful, but all he could concentrate on at the moment was Remus.
“Ahem!” His head snapped up to look at Mary.
“Sorry, got distracted.” He said sheepishly to a polite smattering of laughter from their guests.
“Do you, Sirius Orion Black, take Remus John Lupin as your lawfully wedded husband?” Mary repeated. Sirius didn’t even have to think about it.
“I do.” He sighed, looking straight into Remus’s eyes.
“And do you, Remus John Lupin, take Sirius Orion Black to be your lawfully wedded husband?”
“I do,” Remus said, a slight blush bringing a beautiful colour to his cheeks.
“Then I pronounce you married,” Mary said, her voice thick with emotion, tears threatening to fall. “And in exactly ten seconds, you may kiss your husband.” Everyone started chanting
“Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five,” They’d planned the ceremony to the second. So that they would have a midnight kiss as the world shifted into a new year.
“Four, three, two.”
“I love you,” Remus whispered, his breath ghosting over Sirius’s lips.
“One!” Everyone cheered as Sirius leaned forward, closing the gap, and they kissed for the first time as a married couple. James set off some of Dr Filibuster’s best fireworks.
They kissed again and had to be pulled away from each other so that the ballroom could be changed for the reception party.
“Well, Mr Lupin. How does it feel to be married?” Remus grinned at Sirius.
“Amazing Mr Lupin. How about you?” Sirius couldn’t wipe the smile off his face at being addressed for the first time as Mr Lupin.
“Amazing as well. However, I am wondering how long we need to be here before people are too drunk to notice we’ve snuck away.” He murmured into Sirius’s ear.
“Oh, sod that,” Sirius growled, grabbing Remus’s wrist and dragging him out for the ballroom as chairs and fireworks flew above their heads. “It’s our party we can do what we want.”
“Godric, I love you.” Remus sighed as he let himself be taken upstairs into Sirius’s room.

Something He Never Got To Say Before
for @impishtubist 's prompt here ; it's not wolfstar raising Harry, but close! hope you like it ! words: 955 summary: Harry wants to call Sirius ‘dad’. [Set in the summer after PoA, Peter’s caught, Sirius is free and raising Harry the best he can.]
It frustrates Harry how it fits so perfectly. Sirius is spelled soft and warm on his tongue but dad—it’s tender and something Harry’s never got to say before and homey and it makes his cheek hurt with a smile. Harry loves how it sounds.
But he isn’t meant for it.
Harry stares at the words.
Oh, and I’m sure my dad will~
That’s where they end, the curved end of the l smudged into a waving, blotted line; Harry’s quill had jerked with the realisation of what he’d written.
Dad.
He stares, biting his lip, heart starting to pound in his chest. Sirius, he means. But.
Sirius isn't his dad. Harry doesn't have a dad.
It shouldn't hurt as much as it does.
Sirius changed his whole life. He bought Harry a home, now gives him a life that is a thousand times less miserable and more exciting than his previous one—it is love filled and brimming with smiles and soft touches (instead of shrieking and pan-throwing and knee-scraping heart-wrenching hurt) and Sirius buys him candies and ice creams (the very best ones) and takes him to carnivals and teaches him about Holi and Diwali and tells him stories about his parents. Sirius ruffles his hair and watches the telly with him and tells Harry: I love you, kid.
You're the best, Harry.
It's enough. It should be.
It is, in a way. Harry is more than grateful, beyond it really, for all that Sirius has done—he’s done so much for him in a mere twenty days than the Dursleys ever did for him in all of Harry’s thirteen years.
And yet, he finds himself wanting more.
His lips taste of blood as he scrapes back his chair to throw the crumpled parchment into the bin.
-
He is four (but he doesn't know it then) when he, looking at Petunia's long pale hair and Dudley's very blue eyes (handsome, Petunia always says), asks: “Are you my mum?”
It's a question that's been troubling him, after that Incident at the grocer's, whizzing around in his mind and buzzing right next to his ears and crawling over his fingers ever since.
Petunia turns with a crack of her neck, her face pinching and scrunching. “Where did you get that idea from?”
“That woman at the—”
“I am not,” she cuts in, sharply. Then she shudders. “I'm not your mother and never will be, you understand? I would never want you as my son, you freak of a child.”
Harry fights back tears.
“Who is, then?” he whispers.
“You don't have a mother, you idiot.”
One of the words he learns that day is orphan.
-
It frustrates Harry how it fits so perfectly. Sirius is spelled soft and warm on his tongue but dad—it’s tender and something Harry’s never got to say before and homey and it makes his cheek hurt with a smile. Harry loves how it sounds.
But he isn’t meant for it. It’s how it is. Like how he will never have his parents back. How the sky is blue. It’s how it will be.
Yet. There’s a childish part of Harry that hopes so badly, hopes with all of his snitch-sized heart and rule-defying soul that Sirius accepts him and calls him ‘son’ and —
Maybe he should write a letter to Hermione. Or Ron. They’re good at family stuff, especially Ron. Harry wonders what his best friend would say if he asked: ‘Mate, what do you do when you feel like calling your godfather ‘dad’?
He probably wouldn’t know, nor Hermione, Harry thinks, chewing his morsel for far longer than he should, staring at his plate.
The thing is, the real thing that is behind it all, that Sirius is really, when you think of it for a good while, the perfect picture for the word ‘dad’. He’s the synonym of dad, really, and Harry’s sure that if he said it to whoever wrote dictionaries, the writer would most definitely agree and immediately jot it down next to ‘dad’ and congratulate him immensely for the insight. (In his mind, he looks like Cornelius Fudge.)
And that is why, when Sirius asks Harry in his gentle voice, eyes grey and kind, if something is wrong (because Harry has been quiet throughout dinner and Sirius is sure the curry tastes alright and there’s nothing wrong Sirius has said and he’s wracking his brain if today is a date kids should be morose on but he can’t handle Harry looking so sadly at his plate, like it’s broken his heart or something) that Harry blurts, “Can I call you dad?”
Sirius blinks.
His spoon clatters on the plate.
Harry’s mouth parts as he realises what he’s said and he inhales a sharp, stuttering breath.
Way to go there, Potter. “Er—I mean…”
He doesn’t know what he means except what he said and he knows that he shouldn’t have said it and there’s an expression (shock? surprise? dread?) drenching Sirius’ face and he needs to look away and down at his plate.
Shame burns in his throat, flaming his face and his heart twists.
Harry says, “I meant…” He has no idea what he can say that would rectify this situation. He stares at his orange-red curry, imagining his face is as red as it.
“Oh, Harry…” Sirius say, voice sounding... strange. He clears his throat. “I—of course you can. If you want to.”
Harry looks up so quickly his vision greys a little. “I can?”
“Yeah, you can.” Sirius’ hand flies to his smooth hair to smoothen it.
“Oh.”
He can’t believe it. Sirius smiles; a smile that makes him think of his parents’ wedding photos, that makes Harry believe in everything, including this.
Harry’s face splits into a wide wide grin. “Um, thank you… Dad!”
Sirius’ smile wobbles. “Come here, kid.” Sirius gets up and raises his arms, inviting Harry for a hug. Harry rushes forward, chair screeching, heart soaring in delight, and burrows himself in the tight hold of his godfather, and—dad.

GGSB Fest 2024 - Day 3 - Saying Goodbye is Hard to Do
@goodgodfathersiriusblack
Prompt - Jily Graves
Sirius gets freed despite losing Pettigrew, and learns that Harry's never been to Jill's graves. Thus, a goodbye trip is in order.
AO3
***
One of the best things that Sirius ever did was making sure that he was able to take Harry and clear his name, even after losing Pettigrew in the scuffle that night.  It had taken two weeks into the summer, but at least he’s finally free, and allowed to take his kid in for the summer.  Although it was strange pulling up on his bike in front of the Dursleys and riding away with his kid to the house in the country, it was the best feeling in the world to give his kid the dream come true that he’d been dreaming up for years.  Harry had looked at him like he hung the moon, and Sirius was thrilled that he could do that for him.
Fortunately, their first week, their first month, their first summer together had gone well.  Harry had been thrilled to decorate his own bedroom, get to go on fun adventures, and get to know more about his parents.  They had bonded far faster than Sirius anticipated, but he was thrilled.  They both had a lot to work through, but together, they were making it work and heal together.
Unfortunately, Harry let slip that he’s never been to his parents’ graves, and thus, Sirius made a plan to visit those graves and give them both the chance to move on and say goodbye on Halloween.  He’d gotten permission for Harry to visit home for the weekend, so that he could take him to properly honor his parents instead of ignoring them like everyone else does.  Too busy celebrating the holiday.
A proper visit, a proper goodbye, just the two of them.
Which is what they’re doing today.
They’re both a little more dressed up despite the fact that they’re both riding the bike on the long ride to Godric’s Hollow, and he could’ve just used magic to get there, but Sirius wanted the drive to think.  To think about where he is right now.  How hard it is to properly say goodbye, even if it is thirteen years too late.
Sirius, despite knowing that Pettigrew would’ve done it anyway, still ached over his part in what happened.  His husband and wife were killed because he let someone else protect them.  Sure, he had no way of knowing what Pettigrew would go on to do when they’d been so tight knit at Hogwarts and afterward in the Order, but he still could’ve found another way to pull the wool everyone’s eyes.
Yet, he didn’t.  And his family suffered.
As he pulls into the lot next to the cemetery, that’s all he could think about.  He sits frozen on the bike, even as Harry gets off of it, staring at the cemetery, wondering if they were angry with him.  If they hated him the way he hated himself.
“Pads?” Harry questions after he sits there far too long.  “We don’t have to do this if you’re not ready.”
Sirius shakes his head to clear his thoughts.  “No, no, I am ready, and this will … help, for sure.”  He gets off the bike and gives Harry a side-hug.  “Don’t worry about me, kid.  This is your chance to say goodbye, too.”
Harry gives him a soft smile before they head towards the cemetery.
Although, he’d never been there before – definitely couldn’t do this on his own – he knew roughly where their graves were.  He leads the way to their graves quite easily.  Finding them in moments and offering his arm to Harry to put around him in a side-hug.
“Here they are, kid,” Sirius says.  “Do you want to say a few words?”
“Well, I – I’d like to, but I – I am not sure what to say,” Harry states, uncertainly.
“Just speak from your heart.  They love you no matter what.”
Harry coughs and clears his throat.  “Well, er, hi mum, hi dad.  It’s Harry – your, er, son.”
He looks at Sirius for assurance and Sirius nods at him.  “Go on, kid.”
He looks back at the graves and just starts talking about everything – his life before, how he hopes that they’re proud of him, how happy he is to be with Sirius (although he uses Pads), how he’s looking forward to honoring them every day… and then, he tells them that he misses them.  That he didn’t know what he was missing until Sirius came back into his life, but he knows now, and he truly misses them.
“But I know that you would want Pads and I to be happy, so we’ll honor you and remember you.  We’ll love you, but we’ll also know that it’s okay to – to move on and be happy because I know you’d want us to be.”
“They sure would, kid,” Sirius assures him.  He knows that no matter how difficult it is to say goodbye, to move on, especially given… well, everything… they would want them to be happy.  They wouldn’t want their husband and son suffer.  “They loved us, and they’re watching over us.  They would be telling us that no matter what happened.  I know that, deep down.  They would want us to be happy and move on because they loved us.”
Harry nods, letting Sirius pull him into a proper hug before letting go.
“And they would be so proud of you.  The young man you’ve become and man you’ll grow into someday,” Sirius states.
“They’d be proud of you, too, Pads,” Harry offers.  “I’m sure of it.  You – you saved me from… and you’ve been so good to me…”
“I’m your Pads, kid,” Sirius states.  “I’m meant to love you and take care of you because I’m your Pads.  Still, I understand the sentiment.  I know I messed up even though we all agreed to the change, but I want to make up for it now.  They know that, I’m sure.”
He doesn’t have to say the words he’s feeling out loud.  He just looks at the graves and thinks to himself:
I know that you loved me.  I know that the dementors lied.  I know that I screwed up.  I know that I let you down.  Despite this, I know that you’ll forgive me – if you haven’t already.  But I also know that I will always love you and I will spend the rest of my life making things right.  To you both and to our son.  I promise – I won’t screw up, again.  I just hope you believe me.
He can feel the wind through the air and smell the light scent of flowers, and he knows that they do.  His husband and wife watching over him, they know what he feels, and they know that he’ll keep his promise.
Harry nods and turns back to the graves.  “I love you, mum, dad.”
“And I love you, too,” Sirius says.  He turns to Harry, “Are you ready to go?”
Harry nods, again.  “Let’s go home, Pads.”
“Yes, let’s.”

officially submitting my first ever entry for @impishtubist ‘s Sirius & Harry Saturday: a headcanon about baby harry using his crayons to try and draw sirius’ tattoos on himself. (there’s also protective james and prongsfoot friendship and it’s all quite fluffy)
“Harry! What are you doing?” Sirius leaned forward with a laugh, trying to get a better glimpse of his toddling godson, who’d stripped down until he was clad only in his diaper.
“Lookit Siri, I’m you!” Harry squealed, finally losing the battle against gravity in his excitement and falling forward. Lucky for him, his godfather knew him enough to be prepared with outstretched arms.
Sirius dangled him mid-air in front of him, hands under his armpits. It was the best vantage point to scrutinise the new additions to his godson’s previously unmarked skin.
Because, somehow, Harry had gotten his hands on a permanent marker and had drawn all over himself. And not just anything, but very specific artwork that Sirius could recognise instantly, shaky as it was.
“You know your dad’s gonna kill me, buddy,” Sirius mused absently as he shifted Harry’s weight to one hand and ran one black-tipped nail against the runic figures on his pudgy chest and belly. Well, figures that were attempting to be runic, if he wanted to be accurate. Harry’s hand wasn’t steady enough for straight lines, yet, nor was his theoretical knowledge good enough to capture them perfectly even if they were.
“No, I you, Siri!” Harry repeated stubbornly, and by Merlin, what was the allure of Dark Magic in the face of his adorable godson?
He trailed his finger across the jagged lines on his flank, across his arms, up to his shoulders. There were some unrecognisable scribbles on his upper back, like he’d tried to reach back and color in but couldn’t. Of course, he couldn’t, Harry’s arms were tiny. But it was clear that he was trying to replicate the antlers on Sirius’ back. Unbidden, his gaze fell to Harry’s wrist and sure enough, there was a messy circle with shapes drawn inside it. It was a valiant effort to recreate his family’s crest. Sirius could feel his heart-melting out of his pores.
“Oh, Harry, you little troublemaker, you,” he cooed, bringing his godson into the circle of his arms to tuck him against his chest, biting his lip at how Harry instantly relaxed into him, head tucked under Sirius’ chin.
“You like my tattoos, huh? Couldn’t wait until you grew up a bit, had to have them right now, is that it?” He continued, slightly bouncing Harry in his arms as he walked back and forth.
“Siri pwetty, Hawwy also pwetty,” Harry babbled from his perch and Sirius’ heart melted.
“Dammit, sweetheart, I have a reputation to maintain. You can’t go around saying things like that,” he mock-scolded.
“Things like what, Padfoot?” James’ voice entered the conversation and Sirius had to suppress his laughter at what he’d say when he discovered the state his son was in.
“Oh, nothing much, Harry just wants to be pretty like me,” Sirius said, special emphasis on the ‘me’. “Guess being a carbon copy of his dad isn’t quite cutting it for him anymore.”
He turned to face James as he spoke and couldn’t stop the laughter bubbling in him at the expression on his face. Sirius’ words were already pulling a very strong deadpan from him but one look at his son, covered in black squiggles and smudges, and it immediately gave way to one of pronounced horror.
“Wha—“ James’ words were more of a strangled wheeze. “Padfoot, what did you do to my son?”
“Excuse you,” Sirius said, offended. “I didn’t do anything. This one’s all Harry. I didn’t even know what he was doing until he crawled into the room.”
That didn’t seem to help. “Oh, baby, I knew I shouldn’t have left you alone with Sirius, he’s become rather forgetful in his advanced age, hasn’t he?” With an exaggerated frown on his face, James plucked Harry out of Sirius’ arms and settled him in his own. The kid was, as always, overjoyed to be reunited with his father.
Sirius tried hard to hold onto his outrage—how dare James call him old?—but it was hard, nigh impossible, when he could see Harry rubbing the top of his head back and forth against James’ jaw, like an adorable little kitten.
“So, what’s with-“ James ran a hand down Harry’s arm “-all this?”
“Harry’s trying to be like his extremely cool, not-old-at-all godfather.”
James raised a skeptical eyebrow. Sirius ignored him in favour of talking to his godson.
“Don’t you worry, love, when you’re old enough, I’ll be right there to take you for your first proper tattoo,” he tapped Harry’s little button nose, making him giggle.
It wasn’t enough to mask James’ shocked exhale. “What do you mean first proper tattoo?”
“Look at him and tell me he’s not interested,” Sirius pointed at the little bundle of joy in his arms. Absently, he wondered what kind of tattoo Harry would like, if any. Would he be the sentimental kind, like his dad who never put something on his body he hadn’t considered fifty times over? Or more like Sirius, who’d only needed the thought to pop it into his head to get it inked.
“He’s three and thinks colors, and shapes, on your body look cool. That’s- that doesn’t mean anything!”
“Well, I’m just saying,” Sirius shrugged, deliberately keeping his face clear of anything that could give him away. Of course he knew the reaction his words would elicit, that was part of why he said it. “The option’s there on the table if he ever wants to. With parents like you and Lily, and me of course, the kid’s on the right track for a few pieces of his own.”
“But—“
“And of course, no one except his godfather can be trusted with something like this, right? It’s basically my magic-given duty to escort him to the tattoo parlour,” Sirius finished with a flourish. One of his hands had travelled upwards to ruffle Harry’s hair, marvelling at the soft feel of the inky strands slipping between his fingers.
“No- That’s not- you are not torturing my baby like that!” James finally found his voice, and what a loud one it was too for Harry was startled out of his lazy doze against his dad’s chest by the deep rumble that vibrated through him. His green eyes were wide open, looking at his dad who so rarely raised his voice, and James immediately shrunk—literally, Sirius could see the transformation in real-time, the way his shoulders dropped, his face relaxed, and his nose came down from its high perch.
“Oh, Daddy’s sorry, honey, he didn’t mean to shout,” he whispered in between careful kisses pressed to Harry’s face. “Daddy’s gonna be more careful, okay?”
“Otay,” Harry replied, equally quietly, still staring at him with remnants of shock in his eyes.
Sirius broke the moment with a loud snort—accidental of course but this was too much for him—and immediately attracted James’ ire again.
“You—“ he started accusingly before darting a quick look downward to see Harry was alright. He was. “You can’t be—Harry’s not gonna get tatted, Padfoot! It hurts too much. I won’t have it.”
“You won’t have it?” Sirius repeated, amused. “May I remind you when you got your first tattoo? Or mine, for that matter.” That took the wind right out of his sails.
“Er, that’s not the point here,” James replied shiftily, dropping his gaze to Harry instead of looking at him.
“Remember the runic tattoos we etched into our skin? Could’ve literally blown ourselves inside out right there in the do—“
James slapped a hand against his mouth, effectively stopping him. “Okay, I think that’s enough, I get it.”
Sirius raised his eyebrows, as if to say ‘Do you?’. Harry giggled at his father and godfather’s antics, happily oblivious to the pinched look on the former’s face as he realised the precedent his own actions had set. Sirius couldn’t wait to have this conversation all over again when he was all grown up and could add his own input. He was looking forward to tag-teaming against James, to be honest.
“You—you don’t think he’ll do something like that, do you?” James asked hesitantly, glancing between the two of them.
“He is your kid,” Sirius pointed out. “And Lily’s. And a tad bit mine.”
“He’s all yours, especially when he pulls stunts like this.”
Sirius grinned, wide and uncontrollable, at that, unable to help the warmth that spread through his entire body at those words. He knows James was trying to take a shot at him but it didn’t take away from the fact that Harry was his too, has been from the day he was born—no, since the day James flooed into his house, pale and shaking, telling him that ‘We’re having a kid, Padfoot! An actual baby! Can you believe it?!’
For all the jokes and potshots and snippy back-and-forths they had, Sirius knew he would never be able to thank Jamie for allowing him into his life—into Harry’s life—like this. James had always been free with his affections, sharing heart and home without a second thought but Sirius knew that there were many who’d have put their foot down at the level of involvement he assumed in his godson’s life, and that James and Lily didn’t, wouldn’t, do that. He didn’t know where he’d be without the Potters today, and imagining such a world—it was chilling, to say the very least.
“Pads?” James’ soft voice interrupted his morose thoughts and he snapped his eyes up to meet concerned hazel ones. There was a silent question in them.
Sirius shrugged wryly. Silently raised his hands for Harry, needing to hold him close, and after another searching glance, James passed the now peacefully sleeping child over. Something loosened in his chest when he felt the familiar weight resting against him. He immediately buried his nose in Harry’s hair, taking a deep breath, letting the scent of baby powder and blueberry shampoo fill his lungs, ground him.
“I’ll be the coolest godfather there ever was,” he whispered, feeling a knot in his throat where more words should be. He wanted to say that he loved Harry more than life itself, that he’d always be there for him. The world could tilt off its axis but Sirius’ love for the Potters wouldn’t wane. It couldn’t, really, not with how deeply they were entrenched in his life—in his very being.
“Of course, you will. No one would ever doubt that.” James placed a hand on his shoulder, squeezing gently. “But you’re still not allowed to take my baby to a tattoo parlour, no matter how old he gets.”
if you liked this, i have an entire thing on my ao3 about tattoos and harry and sirius bonding over them postwar >.<

not a big deal • part II // s.b.
Summary: It’s time for you and Sirius to meet the boyfriend. Contains: Fluff. A/N: Sirius never goes to Azkaban in this because no.
Tumblr media
“What house is he in? Is he popular? What’s the general consensus around him?” you can hear Sirius pestering the girl as you join them in the kitchen. He’s cooking dinner but he seems to be more concerned about getting answers to his interrogations.
“Gryffindor. Yes. Life of the party.” She responds to each question without ever taking her eyes off her phone.
“He’s a Gryffindor?” Sirius asks like a child on Christmas morning.
“Yes, Dad.” You don’t miss the smile forming on your daughter’s lips. Though she was sorted into Ravenclaw her first year, she’s always known how much pride Sirius takes in being a Gryffindor and seems to be glad she can afford him this small victory.
But before your husband can proceed with his questioning, there’s a knock at the door.
“Showtime!” you announce excitedly with a clap of your hands.

“So you’re in fifth year, are you?” Sirius asks the boy in between bites. Though you normally sit side by side, tonight you’re both sitting at the heads of the table, opposite each other.
Sirius had suggested it. “We’re meant to be looming authority figures, puppy.” he’d said. “I know you can’t stand being away from me too long, but I promise I’ll more than make it up to you after dinner. Perhaps some dessert, hm?”
“Sirius!”
“What? I was talking about the cake. Get your mind out of the gutter, my sweet.”
“Yes, sir.” the boy replies perfectly respectfully. “I’m quite enjoying it so far.”
“Are you, dear?” you encourage him to elaborate. “What classes are you enjoying the most?”
“Oh, no, Mrs. Black. Forgive me, I wasn’t speaking of our classes. I meant about being with my friends, and er- your daughter. Who just so happens to be my best friend.” his cheeks grew crimson as he glanced nervously across the table at the best friend in question, who was also blushing.
Sirius seemed slightly moved by the comment but refused to give up the intimidating father persona just yet.
“Well, of course, but what about your classes?” he badgers on, as if he gives a damn about qualifications, “Surely you must do well in them if you plan to date a Ravenclaw.”
“Yes, sir. I wouldn’t consider myself to be top of the class, but I fare quite well in most subjects. My personal favorite has to be Transfiguration.”
At hearing this Sirius perked up.
“Transfiguration? With Minnie?”
“Yes, good old McGonagall. She’s quite strict but she’s the best teacher at Hogwarts, if you ask me. Plus, she always lets my friends and I get away with-”
“You haven’t told Dad about the other classes yet.”
Your head swivels towards your daughter who is clearly trying to keep her date from outing himself and his shenanigans. But when you look across the table at Sirius you notice a twinkle in his eye that wasn’t there before.
“That’s quite alright, lad. Nothing wrong with a few practical jokes amongst friends.” he reassures the boy.
“Sir, speaking of practical jokes, can I just say what an honor it is to meet one of the marauders? You’re quite literally legends at school.”
“Oh, boy.” you sigh before taking a sip of your drink. This was going to be a long night.
“Are we really?” Sirius muses as he sits back, a sly grin now plastered onto his face.

“Will they ever shut up?” your daughter rolls her eyes as you two sit out on the patio, enjoying the evening while you can still hear the boys gabbing on from the dining room.
“Like two old women.” you groan, rubbing your temples.
“That Snivellus! Nearly twenty years it’s been and he’s still a slimy git!” you hear Sirius holler in the distance, and immediately reprimand him from out where you sit.
“Language!”
“Sorry, love!”
You turn to look at the young girl beside you. She looks so much like her father, inky black strands falling over her eyes. You push them away so you can see her better and drape an arm over her shoulder.
“Well, look on the bright side, kiddo. Something tells me there won’t be a problem with you dating this boy.”
