Dealing with God

There are basically two ways to deal with God.

We can deal with God on God’s terms.

That is, we can either open our hearts and our minds to God. And let God show us who He is.

Which leads to all kinds of things that make us deeply uncomfortable. Like today’s Gospel, the bread of life discourse. It’s the source of the Church’s understanding that Christ is really present (body and blood, soul and divinity) in the Eucharist.

Or we can deal with God on our terms.

Our relationship with God will be radically different, depending on whose terms we’re using.

If we deal with God on our terms, we will soon find that we have made something to suit our own preferences. Whether it’s something that we’re comfortable with.

Or something that we’re comfortable ignoring.

We’ll make it work for a while. But in time, we’ll find ourselves further and further from anything real. Further and further from anything that will ever satisfy the hole in our hearts.

If we deal with God on God’s terms, we’ll find ourselves drawing closer and closer to the source of reality itself.

If we persist, if keep dealing with God on God’s terms, then we will find a peace and joy that can only come from satisfying our hearts by filling them with the very thing that they were meant to be filled with.

1. Có một sự thật rất đơn giản: Nếu ai đó có thể thỏa mãn (satisfy) bạn, họ cũng có thể làm bạn bất mãn (frustrate).

Nghĩa là, khi bạn trao cho ai đó quyền làm bạn sướng, làm bạn hy vọng, làm bạn hạnh phúc, thì cũng đồng thời bạn trao cho họ tấm vé khiến bạn bất hạnh, bực bội, hoài mong.

Trừ khi bạn chọn không trao cho ai cơ hội được làm bạn vui (giống những người chọn không yêu thì không thể bị cắm sừng), chắc chắc mỗi khi được sung sướng, hãy nhắc mình rằng bạn sẽ có "cơ hội" được trải nghiệm nỗi buồn bất cứ khi nào.

2. Vậy nên, đôi khi, bạn buồn vì bị ai đó – người mình thích, người mình yêu, người mình tin tưởng – làm bạn thất vọng, câu trả lời khá hiển nhiên là: bạn mở cửa cho họ vào nhà mà. Bạn vừa là nạn nhân, vừa là thủ phạm trong vụ án 'Tôi buồn'.

Bởi vì bạn không thể muốn đồng xu chỉ có một mặt, khi bạn chọn gửi gắm quyền sung sướng vào một người thì bạn cũng trao tay luôn quyền được bất hạnh cho họ.

Và giống như phần lớn những em bé, nếu biết do chính nó tự làm mình ngã (thay vì "Bố mẹ đánh chừa quả bóng hay sàn nhà vì làm em ngã này"), thì nó sẽ không khóc. Bạn cũng có thể ngừng "than vãn" về mặt lý trí rằng: anh ta/cô ta là người khiến mình buồn.

3. Câu hỏi khôn lỏi là: "Liệu tớ có thể phân tích được chi phí-lợi ích trước khi đầu tư vào một mối quan hệ để đỡ bị buồn không?". Nếu nhận được niềm vui nhiều hơn nỗi buồn thì tớ sẽ yêu, ngược lại thì thôi.

Câu trả lời gần như là không, vì bạn không thể dự đoán được trải nghiệm, đặc biệt là những sự kiện mang tính đổi đời (transformative experience). Bạn không thể biết thực sự cảm giác làm cha như nào trừ khi bạn có con. Bạn không biết thế nào là một con mèo, trừ khi bạn sinh ra là loài mèo: mọi thí nghiệm tưởng tượng đều chỉ là hời hợt.

Vì vậy, chỉ có cách là liều thử nó.

4. Và chính sự liều hay cú nhảy của niềm tin (leap of faith) là một lựa chọn hiện sinh, khi bạn sẵn sàng "Đen thôi, đỏ quên đi". Vì bạn chẳng biết sẽ sướng hơn, hay khổ hơn, thì sống liều là một triết lý có lẽ "khẳng định cuộc đời" (life-affirming) hơn là chỉ ngồi dự đoán và tê liệt trong phân tích: yêu, không yêu, yêu, không yêu...

5. Vậy nên, mỗi khi buồn hãy nhớ đến những lúc mình vui mà tỉnh tảo nhận ra rằng: bạn chấp nhận sướng vì người đó thì đồng thời bạn sẽ phải chấp nhận khổ vì người đó.

Bạn còn bất mãn nghĩa là bạn còn có cơ hội được thỏa mãn. Không ai có thể khiến bạn buồn, nghĩa là bạn không còn cơ hội được vui nữa. "Nếu một người khiến chúng ta bất mãn, chúng ta sẽ luôn tin rằng họ sẽ có thể khiến chúng ta thỏa mãn".
