Indie Bookstore Adventures: San Marcos Edition

My partner lives in San Marcos, Texas, which is about an hour drive from where I currently reside in north Austin, and we alternate visits with each other on weekends. While I'm more of the reader between the two of us, we both share a love for all things goth, horror and spooky. So when I discovered that there's a new independent bookshop called Triple Six Social less than a ten minutes drive from his place specializing in All Of The Above...well, you can imagine my reaction. 😂

First of all, Triple Six Social is not just a bookstore: it's also a witch shop, oddities curio, and coffee bar. Because they just recently opened (as of this post), they don't have a huge selection of books just yet, but they had some very interesting titles on the paranormal and spooky history, as well as a good collection of works from well-known horror writers. They also had a really nice selection of children's books as well!

They also carry a variety of goods and witchy supplies from local and regional artists and creators, including some horror-themed soaps and some of the best smelling wax melts we've ever come across in our lives.

(By the way, I know the artist who makes those prints – in fact, I found out about Triple Six Social because they shared it on their Instagram story! You can give them a follow and see more of their beautiful work on IG at @bekkabakerart!)

They also have a small curio room with some cool oddities (including this beautiful taxidermy mountain lion), as well as a small theatre room for horror movie nights, tarot readings, and special events. They even have a small haunted museum at the back of the building! There is a $10 fee for the museum so we decided to skip it for our first visit, but they do offer free museum days once a month so we definitely plan on returning!

Right now, their coffee bar is donation-based. They had some standard espresso options and a few specialty drinks on the menu (my partner got a Victorian London fog and I got some cherry blossom green tea) and told us that they plan to expand the menu soon to include snacks as well as beer and wine.

All in all it was a fabulous first visit. The staff was so friendly and while their stock is small at the moment, I'm really excited to see how this rad little shop grows. I have a feeling it will definitely become one of our go-to spots in SMTX!

Both San Marcos and College Station are college towns, so they attract trainers from across the state and the country. In San Marcos, Texas State University runs a water-type gym, with most battle fought outdoors along the San Marcos River. The gym leader, a university professor, uses a Quaquaval that can knock out most challengers with a single kick. Around the gym, trainers can find and capture plentiful wild water-types, including Squirtle, Chewtle, and Barboach.

College Station, home to a fighting-type gym, has plenty of fighting and flying-types living in the vicinity. These include large flocks of Spearow and Starly, as well as Machop. The surrounding area also has plenty of normal and grass-types, with Tauros and Miltank being abundant once you leave the city itself. The muddy Brazos River hosts Barboach and Magikarp.

Salí del hostel muy a mi pesar y con todo el cansancio y el agotamiento y la depresión a intentar conocer esta ciudad que todavía no había visto. Sobre todo porque tenía miedo de encontrarme a muchas parejas felices disfrutando la vida. Me sorprendí gratamente de que no sea tan así. Me tomé un café y no tomé el desayuno gratis del hostel porque era muy tarde y me daba verguenza pedir un café a las 12 del mediodía. Entonces me fui a un café atendido por una china que estaba barriendo afuera y me comí eso y una especie de medialuna con pistacho. Era copada y joven, igual me sentí medio raro y observado así que me fui bastante rápido apenas terminé de desayunar. Al toque me tomé el bondi para ir a la isla de Venecia Tronchetto, la parte más turística, resulta que el trayecto está bueno y se ve la laguna con la que conecta con Venecia Mestre aunque tampoco nada del otro mundo la vista desde el colectivo. Cuando bajé me pareció hermoso y al toque se ve el puente grande que atraviesa el canal y empecé a sacar fotos y dejé de seguir el GPS. Es un laberinto Venecia, una vez que empezás a seguir los puentecitos y te vas perdiendo entre las callecitas que en realidad son callejones es todo muy lindo y realmente me sorprendió. En un momento al mediodía la gente como que desaparece no sé si es que se duermen la siesta o qué pero no había nadie y aproveché a sacar muchas fotos. A las 13 mas o menos cuando vi un puesto que vendía pizza y que no había nadie y sólo tenía una barra para comer, entré y pedí una porción de pizza con longaniza y una fanta y me la comí ahí mirando por la ventana que daba a la callecita veneciana. Había unos diarios en la barra. Me sentí re italiano, pensé enseguida que tendría que haber ido el día anterior también a Venecia pero bueno. Igual me encantó, grabé también con la camarita pocket un walktrough y no me sentí para nada observado ni haciendo algo mal, estuvo bien. También saqué muchas fotos con el celular y con la nikon. En un momento grabé un vivo de instagram que quedó guardado, la verdad fui re caradura ese día y no me importó nada. Cuando se hizo de noche llegué a la parte de la costa que es increíble el atardecer, también vi la iglesia de San Marco, la Piazza San Marco es una locura la verdad lo enorme que es y lo bella. La catedral también la vi por dentro un rato, me cobraron 3 euros pero la verdad era muy cortito el recorrido que se podía hacer y estaba todo vallado, arriba subí pero cobraban entrada también. Salí bastante rápido y medio que no valió la pena pagar por eso solo. Igual después di unas vueltas por la costa y cuando vi que era demasiado romántico el atardecer y había muchas parejas y ya había sacado suficientes fotos de la plaza y el atardecer me fui yendo para volverme. Además no había cenado ni nada, sólo la pizza. En el trayecto también fui sacando fotos nocturnas aunque sin demasiada calidad. Encontré un puesto que vendía unos panini arrotolatos bastante baratos y me compré uno y lo fui comiendo por el camino. Sentí que me hizo perder la verguenza todo eso que hice y el hecho de haber perdido un día antes. O sea sentí que tenía que aprovechar y que no era tan terrible ir solo y que me tenía que chupar más un huevo todo como en 2020 cuando hice mi primer viaje a Europa solo. Bueno cuestión que al menos lo aprendí. Llegué al hostel y me tiré a descansar después de tanto agotamiento, al otro día tenía que liberar el airbnb temprano.
