“I hate this.”

Sam knew that Bucky truly did hate this, but at least he was trying. He had been invited to the party as Captain America and he had convinced an unwilling Bucky to come, mainly so he wouldn’t have to be alone.

“I know, and I’ll make it up to you,” he promised, his hand on Bucky’s shoulder. The crowds made him nervous too honestly. It felt like all eyes were on them. “I needed you though…”

At that, Bucky’s expression softened and he turned to Sam. He looked incredible dressed up, his nicely tailored black jacket covering all but a glint of the metal on his left arm. His shirt was a deep dusky purple and yeah, Sam definitely had the best looking date in the room.

“You okay, Sam?”

Sam let his hand slide off Bucky’s shoulder and down to his hand, which he held. He had never been too bad with crowds but the pressure of being a public figure was a lot.

“I am now.”

A sequel to "Never a Silent Night". As promised before Leatis, the Doctor brings Rose back to London for Christmas with her Mum. But it can never just be a visit, can it? And it's soon discovered that Earth has made itself an amusing target for the Sycorax. A rewrite of the Christmas Special with Nine and Jack.

It should be easy, in theory. It's only for the party, and maybe the odd time Stede and Ed are seen together in the days leading up to the event. Except, of course, it isn't. Because not only does this simple plan get painfully out of hand from the onset, they've been in love with each other for years. They just never told one another. And, they don't intend to.

Hi!! Today I was wondering about the overwhelming prevalence of "shipping fics", particularly when those two characters are portrayed as close friends in canon (or at least they are said to be close friends in the narrative).

Close friends? No, they are romantically (and sexually) involved. Without fail. Because clearly that's the only way two people can be that close, or be so determined to help each other. (rolls eyes)

It bothers me that close friendships are never "just" friendships, whether it's male-female or between men or women. It also bothers me that two characters who share even a little or a lot of screentime are lumped together romantically. I'm thinking of ships like Stucky, SamxBucky, IronStrange, even Stony (before the whole CACW thing).

Why is shipping so prevalent?? What am I missing? (Sorry that it feels so very vent-y...)

Seriously though, I think it's a combination of things. Romance has always been a huge part of the narrative so it makes sense that many fics will include that. I used to think I didn't like it but I realized eventually what I didn't enjoy was a story where the characters are not written to be anything more than each other's loved ones.

It's one of my pet peeves when it comes to Steve and Bucky, for instance. I don't ship them (although I do find Stucky super cute), but I hate it when they're paired up romantically and nothing else defines them. Everything Steve does is for Bucky, or everything Bucky does is for Steve. As if they're not fully developed, complex and wonderful characters on their own. I'm not a fan of it in fics but I despise it passionately in metas.

Then there's the amatonormativity angle that impregnates pretty much everything. All that "unless it's romantic, the relationship is not valuable" has done a lot of harm. So I'm not surprised that many people will see two characters who are friends in canon (like Steve and Natasha, Nat with Clint, Carol and Maria, Sam and Bucky) and want their bond to be stronger... so they pair them up.

PS1. Just to make this clear, I'm not saying I have an issue with people shipping or writing whatever they want. By all means, go ahead! There are tags to navigate through that and whoever doesn't like it has to curate their experience, it's not the job of the creators to do so. That is very clear.

PS2. You can vent in my inbox whenever you want, by the way. Free range, it's all yours! 😉

PS3. Don't get me started on the IronStrange or Stony ships. I might combust.

I had a really stressful night last night - so I decided on cuteness. We all could use a little fluff.

Bucky was asleep with the cat nestled in his neck. Sam had been having a rough week and that sight alone was enough to ease the frustration. “Oh look at you two,” he murmured, shaking his head. A smile crossed his face, a genune smile.

Being Captain America had been causing him a lot of pressure, stress like he couldn’t fully wrap his head around, but then he had a boyfriend who cuddled his cat like she was a freakin’ baby. There was definitely a balance of wonderful in his life too.

He stared at them for a long moment and then he did what any rational man would do - he snapped a picture.

“Agents who work with us are scared shitless of this man,” Sam mumbled as he slipped his phone into his back pocket. “And he does this...”

I have a cute head-canon to share with y'all.

So before Endgame, Bucky walks in on Natasha painting her nails one day. And he's like wow there's so many colors (she's painted her nails rainbow for pride month) because back in the 1940s nail polish was scarce and usually only came in red. So Natasha offers to paint his nails, along with teaching him to do his own. Then after Endgame, Bucky inherits Natasha's nail polish and Sam walks in on him painting his nails bright yellow one day. And so he goes over and asks Bucky why he's painting his nails such a bright color. Bucky responds by saying that that color reminds him of Sam and his smile, so whenever he looks at his nails he thinks of Sam. And then Sam goes all soft and asks Bucky if he can paint his nails too. And Bucky's like yeah sure so Sam picks out this really pretty steel grayish blue and when Bucky asks him why he picked that color, Sam says he chose it because it reminds him of Bucky's eyes and how he gets lost in them every time so when Bucky’s not around he can just look at his nails. so now we just have two (2) soft bois being in love and I just find that so freaking wholesome.
