Here I Go, Don't Let Me Go

(MCU - Sambucky & Background ships)

It felt to Sam like things were really going to work between him and Bucky, and they sort of did, for a bit. But what is it about Sam and his life that brought him here? What is Bucky not seeing, and what would it take to get them to give this a serious shot?

This is an older fic, but easily my most popular. It's heavy, and sad (heed the tags), and explores Sam's life, history and mental health.

I'm Inside Your Head, and You Don't Know Me

(MCU - Sambucky & Samsharon)

Sam and Sharon have a thing. Bucky doesn't like it. This all comes to a head on a mission where the problems - and upsides - in both relationships play a role.

This is a more missiony fic than I usually write (it's still 90% people sitting around talking about their feelings lol). It's set post TFATWS and continues some of the themes, with Sharon and Sam liking each other but her not being honest, and Bucky and Sam adoring each other but Bucky still being a dipshit at times.

Mutant's Best Friend

(616 - Allerdrake (not ship heavy))

Hijinks and shenanigans ensue when Bobby accidentally leaves St. John in charge of a sentient canine ice golem.

A light, comedic, adventure fic which I genuinely think is just a lot of fun.

Don't Help Them to Bury the Light

(MCU - Sambucky)

Since he was a kid, Sam has been having these terrible dreams. The problem is, they seem to always come true.

This is another sad fic, focusing on Sam's mental health and history of grief. It's set post TFATWS but uses elements of his powers from 616 in the 70s.

Sam and Misty get caught up in some kind of psychedelic dreamscape when on a mission, forcing them to understand each other better.

A very indulgent, heavily metaphorical fic where I use imagery and psychic bird powers to explore my feelings about their recent arguments in canon. This is quite niche in its appeal, but I think it's fun.

It was a dimly lit bar. Smokey. Conversations were in hushed tones under the rhythms of a Jazz band on stage. There was something art deco to the furniture; gold geometry accenting emerald green velvet.

Sam slid into the booth. The one he always sat at. The one with the floral fountain pattern hand carved into the table. And as always, a waitress placed a cocktail in front of Sam without asking Sam what he wanted.

It was never the same waitress. It was never the same cocktail. Tonight, it was a peach-colored concoction poured over crushed ice in a hurricane glass with a full sprig of rosemary.

Sam smiled at the drink despite himself. Sam picked out the garnish, placing it lightly on a napkin as he took a sip.

"So?"

Her voice was smooth and dulcet. Sharon smiled as she slid next to Sam, her usual glass of scotch or bourbon in hand.

"Pear juice... lemon juice... vodka... and rosemary syrup?" Sam guessed, taking a few sips just to double-check on the rosemary syrup.

Sharon beamed.

"Right on the money," said Sharon, "As always."

Sam wanted to smile back. He wanted to joke with her. He wanted to be happy that he got to see her. They only had this night. Once a week every week like clockwork now that Sharon wasn't running from the law.

But he couldn't.

He needed to ask her. He'd been avoiding this so long. Because he... he liked Sharon. More than liked, really. They've been through so much together. They were friends. Or maybe more than friends.

But Sam knew what he saw.

"Sharon - " Sam started, but Sharon tried to bulldoze through Sam's thoughts.

She grabbed Sam's hand. Her hands were cold. Sam wanted to take them in his and warm them up. He could feel her shaking. Maybe because she was cold. Maybe because she knew what Sam was about to ask her.

"Cupid's Hope," Sharon blurted.

Maybe as a distraction. Maybe because she wanted Sam to know. Wanted to take that next step. To recognize that what they were both feeling for each other was more than just friendship.

"It's a. Um. Cupid's Hope," she said, uncharacteristically stumbling over her words.

Her eyes pled with Sam. To forget what he saw. To be in this moment with her. To just be happy. Sam wanted to so badly.

"Was that you?" whispered Sam, "At that black market auction?"

Sharon looked away.

"Could we pretend it wasn't?" asked Sharon halfheartedly.

Sam took Sharon's hands. She seemed to marvel at him as he warmed hers up with his own. He smiled at that.

"Is that a yes?" asked Sharon, a little hopeful.

Sam leaned over and kissed Sharon. Softly. A light, lingering peck.

"I wish I could," said Sam, because he did.

Sharon sighed.

"I thought you would say that," said Sharon, her shoulders slouching.

Sam held her hands.

"You could stop it," said Sam, knowing it was his turn to be a little desperate, "Whatever you're doing. Whatever you got yourself into. You don't have to be in it. You can walk away."

Sharon shrugged.

"What if I don't want to walk away?" asked Sharon, because she obviously didn't want to.

"I want to be with you," said Sam, holding those now warm hands in his, "But..."

Sharon nodded.

"I know," said Sharon quietly, the jazz band playing something melancholic in the background, "You wouldn't be the Sam I love if you ignored my extracurricular activities... Same time next week?"

Sam nodded, finishing his drink before he got out of the booth.

"Always," said Sam, because Sam couldn't give her up.

Please talk about SamSharon. Ever since I watched TFATWS I thought 'Oh. Those two would look good together' and I need to talk about this with someone.

This week has been a special kind of hell so thank you so much for sending me this, Anon! It always makes me happy to talk about SamSharon (I like to call them Shasam, I think it's cute) and I hope it will make you happy too to read this.

You're right, even if we're talking just on an aesthetic level they do look good together. Anthony Mackie and Emily VanCamp are two very good-looking people! Just seeing them together in my icon or in some of the artwork I've been gifted/commissioned of them is enough to bring me joy.

On a deeper level, I think there are so many reasons they would make an incredible couple. They have a lot in common, as I see it - they are both incredibly loyal workaholics who don't seem to have a lot of time for a personal life. I think it would be good for both of them to be with someone who understands that dedication to a greater cause, and at the same time I think they could help each other realize that their work is not the only thing that matters. With their own strong internal moral compasses, neither of them have had issues with defying authority when they felt it was needed (see: Captain America: Civil War) and more recently (see: TFATWS) they have found themselves questioning long-held beliefs. At the end of TFATWS they are both in very different places, but I could really see Sam helping Sharon regain some of the idealism that we see she has lost.

I could go on for much longer (and already did here) so I'll end with one more point for now. I am really drawn to the idea of rewriting one's own destiny, and I think that's one of the things that draws me towards Sam and Sharon. It is possible to see Sharon as a person who is "meant" to end up with Steve, just like she did in the comics, and I think honestly there was a part of Sharon at one point that thought she and Steve were destined to be together. I love the notion of both Sharon and Sam realizing that the right person for them has been in their vicinity for a while, but they just weren't able to see it yet. I think there's something really beautiful about that and that they could become an incredible power couple, fighting side by side and building a life together.

Okay okay SamSharon has been brought to my attention and now that I’m thinking about it, they would be such a HOT couple 🥵 can you imagine? Like definition of bi-panic inducing couple. And they def have the chemistry (she totally was checking him out and flirting in the shirtless scene).

Do you have any fic recs for Shasam? Also, any thoughts on what the new Captain America movie could be about? Because I'm hoping Sharon will be involved.

Sure, I can share some recs! As a disclaimer, I am kind of picky about Shasam fanfics, because I tend to prefer more romantic stories than really angsty ones and I am also very attached to my own interpretations of their characters. Here are a few that I really like:

Locked by buckysknifecollection This was one of the earliest Shasam fanfics I found that I enjoyed. It's a short, fun oneshot where Sam and Sharon get trapped in a bunker.

you can hear it in the silence by treaddelicately This one is a tiny bit angsty but also very sweet and I like it a lot. It's based on the idea of Sam and Sharon falling for each other while Sam is on the run pre-Infinity War.

Venus Fly Trap by shroomyystar This one explores the idea of Sam falling for Sharon after TFATWS. I really like Sam's characterization in this.

chalantness has two drabbles that I really like (here and here) that have informed a lot of my characterization of Shasam as a couple. Just as a heads up, these are both smutty.

Finally, I will mention my own writing as well. You can find all of my published Shasam drabbles and fics here. A lot of it is taken from the long-running RP I have with two of my friends, where I write both Sam and Sharon. I also wrote a one-shot called Reconnaissance which is set before Sam and Sharon are in a relationship, but is very flirty and fun.

As for the Captain America movie, I'm with you and I hope that Sharon will be involved somehow! I like how Malcolm Spellman wrote Sam in TFATWS so I'm looking forward to that, and I'm not familiar with the director's work but I am interested to see what he does with it. I was a little disappointed nothing related to Sharon was announced when they announced the cast, but I'm holding out hope. Apart from anything else, this movie is kind of lacking in the female department at the moment (aside from the new character that was announced) 😂
