Build Up Episode 0: Getting to Know the Boys Part 2: Team Soul

Hey friends! Continuing my introductory posts about the guys on MNET's Build Up before I can dive into proper recaps, here's the low down on Team Soul -- their background, basic info, and my opinion on their teaser performance (and other performances). (I did Team Allround last time.) Let's go!

Same disclaimers apply -- 1) these are all excellent vocalists and I am just splitting hairs here 2) this is taking forever and screencaps with my video source are tricky, so please forgive my awkward screencaps and occasional typos. Thank you!!

Ma Jaekyung

Jaekyung is 27 and from a group called Romeo, where he was the main vocalist and performed under the name of Kyle. He also appeared on Mixnine, that blighted show that produced a group that never debuted. It was such a fiasco, ugh, and so many trainees went through hell for nothing. Bitsaeon from M.O.N.T. , Jeong Inseong from KNK, and Donghun from A.C.E. all went on that as well, so they all might have gotten friendly then.

Jaekyung (and the other members of Romeo) also went on Peaktime, a show for idol groups that had already debuted but weren’t super successful, including Vanner (who won!), M.O.N.T, and BDC, so he may have met Taehwan, Bitsaeon (again), and Hong Seongjun. When Romeo was on Peaktime, they performed the SHINee song Juliette, which is a cute choice since that’s the name of their fandom. And then MNET didn’t bother airing that performance. Thanks, MNET! Themnet.

So, as for his group itself. Romeo was a 7 member group that debuted in May of 2015, when he would have been 18 years old. The group did slightly better in Japan than they did in Korea, but none of their Korean singles charted at all and most of their MVs have fewer than 200,000 views. Their biggest hit appears to be Lovesick. When the guys from Romeo went on Peaktime, they revealed that Romeo had disbanded at some point in the past.

In Jaekyung’s k-profiles listing, it says he’s” a 4D” kind of guy, so I guess we should watch out for his personality, if MNET will show it. It’s hard to picture a guy in a tan blazer as wacky, but we’ll see!

His teaser song was V25, Passing by Kim Bum Soo. For me, he has a really nasal tone to his singing that isn’t my favorite, and I am not a huge fan of his kind of wobbly vibrato, but like everyone on this show, he’s essentially a very good vocalist, with what seems like a very good sense of pitch. Again, it’s a ballad and my ears sort of turn off, so I’ll keep an open mind.

Seokhwa

Here is Kang Seokhwa, who is in WEi. He also went on YG Treasure Box, where he would have met CIX’s Seunghwan, and Produce X 101, where he ranked 35th and would have met two of the all rounders on this show, Choi Suhwan and BDC’s Hong Seongjun.

WEi, pronounced something like “we-eye”, is a six member group that debuted in 2020. WEi is almost entirely made up of contestants from Produce 101, Produce X 101, and Under 19, including some who won their seasons. Seokhwa is their main vocal. The WEi song Spray spent some time on my playlists recently, but I don’t know many of their other songs. WEi’s most popular member, Johan, is significantly more popular than the others; he came in first place in Produce X 101. Their videos get around 10-15 million views each, putting them slightly lower in the popularity ranking than CIX and AB6IX, but leagues ahead of IMFACT and Romeo.

I checked out an MR removed video of Spray and Seokhwa was really stable, so I can see why he’d come on the show. He’s V37, and it’s a ballad and you know me by now so it’s hard for me to give this a chance but he has a sweet voice that sounds best when he’s singing more softly, which can’t be said of everyone on this show. We’ve got a lot of belters here! He strains a bit on the higher notes, and I feel like he closes his throat a bit when he belts, but doesn’t get too nasal, which is good. He’s young yet -- he’s only 23, one of the younger people on the show -- and I hope he keeps working on his voice, because he has a lot of potential.

Donghun

Donghun will turning 31 at the end of February of this year (2024), and he’s already done his military service.

He is the main vocal of A.C.E., a five member group under Beat Interactive/Swing Entertainment that debuted in 2017 with the song Cactus. Their songs don’t chart in Korea, but they get into the top twenty on the US World Chart, because USA has taste, yo.

If there’s one song of theirs that I think you’d know it would be Goblin (Favorite Boys). But there’s also Under Cover, which is also a banger. Whoever did the subtitles on their older videos puts the names of the singers in, so you can easily find Donghun in their videos. Some of their older songs have 15-20 million views, but their newest comeback, an English language mid-tempo ballad called Effortless, has less than a million views, maybe because it’s in English? Or because it’s a mid-tempo ballad? I don’t know, if you like Who Do You Love by Monsta X, songs like that, you might like Effortless. Really, their songs are good. I feel like it’s a weird situation where everyone likes A.C.E. but somehow they’re still kind of nugu. I know, that doesn’t make sense.

Donghun went on Mixnine (he won 8th place and should have debuted), so he probably knows the other Mixnine contestants on this show: Bitsaeon from M.O.N.T., Ma Jaekhyung from Romeo, and Jeong Inseong from KNK. He may also know Park Jeup from when they both went on I Can See Your Voice 4.

He set himself up for a tough time by singing an EXO song for his teaser song (V20, Miracles in December). Literally no one can sing it like they can. Still, he does pretty well. He has an appealing warm vocal color and he really goes for that long held note, holding it with good breath support. I just worry because I can almost feel his throat straining on the higher notes. He hits them, but it’s got to hurt. He also relies on some pretty loud background vocals so it’s harder to tell how much of it is live. Despite that, he’s an excellent idol singer and I’ll always support A.C.E. and him.

Lee Minwook

Minwook is 23 and is in a group called Newkidd. I guess he likes vests? What, oh what, what on earth is up with the styling for these guys? Most of them are dressed like they’re going to a college interview. I don’t get it!

As far as I know, Minwook hasn’t been on any other survival type shows, making him one of the 15 members of the cast who haven’t (and 4 of those are musical actors).

Newkidd is a 7 member group under J-FLO Entertainment, an agency that manages only them, and the debuted in 2019. Most of their MVs get a million views or fewer. From what I can tell, their most popular song is Tu Eres, featuring the Spanish refrain “tu eres, tu eres, tu eres bonita” (you are, you are, you are pretty). The comments on the video are mostly in Spanish and show a lot of excitement about hearing Spanish in a Kpop song, and I can’t blame them! Representation! So maybe Newkidd is more popular in Spanish speaking countries and is courting that market. That’s smart -- it’s a huge market!

In his teaser, Minwook was V09, The Manuel by Eddy Kim, an example of a ballad I actually like -- it has some interesting chord progressions and isn’t sappy at all. I also like his performance. He seems to just be singing live while accompanied by just one guitar, which gives me faith in his vocals. I think his voice might be more “unique” than “soul” but these categories are pretty reductive anyway. He puts a lot of warmth into his lower notes and makes you almost feel like you understand what he’s singing. He doesn’t display his higher register or belt as much here, so I’ll be waiting to see more of what he can do.

Lim Sanghyun

Sanghyun is listed as a singer-songwriter, and he’s 27. He’s considered a ballad artist specifically, and is signed to MNH entertainment, where he releases mostly digital singles. I know the ballad market in Korea is really big, even if it’s not my favorite, so go for it, Sanghyun!

His teaser was V14, one of those kinds of ballads I hate so much that it’s hard for me to be fair. He sings in that classic K-ballad style, that kind of gruff whisper-sing, which can go either way for me depending on the song.I don’t think he ever really lets go and belts in his teaser, so I’ll be curious to hear what that would sound like.

Bain

This is Bain, age 22, and I adore his voice. (His name is pronounced “bane”, if you’re wondering, based on the hangul.)

Let me talk about him for a moment.

No, wait. Instead of me talking, you should just listen to this. It’s just a straight forward, earnest cover of Oliva Rodrigo’s Driver’s License, with no winky “ha ha I’m a boy singing this,” no sarcasm. Just a pure performance. His vibrato is so sweet. He exhibits barely a trace of nasality, and when it’s present, it’s for the emotion of the song. The notes he hits in his full chest voice? I can’t believe it. And his mixed register is like, chef’s kiss. I can’t. I just can’t. I’d never heard of him before this show, but I heard this performance and I was good. Even my fella was like, “wow, this guy has technique.” So you’re going to have to accept that I’m a Bain fan and will be cheering for him.

I had to look into Just B. They’re a 6 member group under Bluedot Entertainment, a subdivision of Kakao that manages only them. They debuted into 2021, and their members were contestants on Under 19, I-land, and a few other survival shows. (Side note: I watched a lot of I-land, but never saw any of Under 19. Starting to think I should add it to the list.) JustB has a few title tracks out at this point and they usually get about 10 millions views each. I listened to a few of them over the last few days (it’s taking me a while to write this recap) and I’ve come to like a few of their songs. Their most recent comeback is called Medusa, and though the lyrics make negative amounts of sense, it’s pretty catchy. I also liked Damage quite a bit. The group doesn’t seem to have set positions, but it seems that Bain and Geonu are more or less the main vocals.

Jay

Jay Chang, V02, age 22, famous for almost making it into Zerobase1, landing in 10th place. He’s American, with a white-Filipino-Chinese ethnic background, and on Boys Planet, he was extremely popular among the “Global” voters, but not very popular among the Korean voters. He also went on another show called Under 19 at some point, if you watched that -- I didn’t, but maybe I should. In case you didn’t watch Boys Planet, here is his initial audition to Rush Hour,and here is his performance of Exo’s Love Me Right (he was main vocal).

I know that most of my 3 or 4 readers are Jay fans, and that is cool by me. I’ve always thought he has a really really lovely, clean vocal color, he has good stage presence, and I think he’s basically a nice guy, though he sorta gives me fuckboi vibes sometimes. I also think -- and don’t get mad at me, ok? -- I also think that he needs to work on his pitchiness and nasality. That’s true in both the opening notes of his Rush Hour audition, and at points in his Baby Baby teaser song. He was one of the top 3 or 4 vocalists among the Boys Planet boys, but he’s in a different setting now and might just be outsung by the other vocalists here. I hope that you’re ok with that. I’m not saying that he’s a bad singer. Everyone on this show is a very good singer, and Jay is also a very good singer! I’m just looking for a voice that can compete with D.O.’s voice, and my standards are up in the sky. (Hanuel wilo fly fly!)

Jung Soomin

Jung Soo-min loves slightly goofy, informal outfits that scream “Hi, I’m American!” Which he is -- born in Chicago. That's about all I know about his background.

Check out his performance, V30, a really sweet cover of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You,” in which he accompanies himself on the guitar. I think it speaks for itself, but I’ll say a few words anyway. I really like his voice -- sweet, light, a little textured. Great agility, and good performance of the emotion/feeling of the words. Just delightful. I’ll forgive your hat.

Here he is on tiktok talking bout his experience on the show (in English). He says that his attitude toward competition is to just do the best he can, that the competition is really with himself. He seems like a nice guy.

Kim Seongjeong

Seongjeong is a musical actor, and his performance in V16 shows that. It’s not a style of singing that I tend to respond to, but I respect its natural quality and hard-earned technique. Vocally, he wouldn’t at all be out of place on Broadway. Considering his rich timbre and excellent breath support, I’d be interested to hear him sing something more in the pop or r&b style to see what it would sound like. My sleuthing tells me that he’s 25 (born in 1999) and acted in Hadestown and West Side Story. And look at that smile! Totally transforms his face.

Park Joohee

Joohee is another one of the contestants I just can’t find much info on. His teaser song was V15, Stand by Me by SHINee, and it was perfectly nice. Not mind blowing, but easy to listen to. He has good agility and a nice vocal color, but seems to lack breath support -- either that, or he was just really nervous, which seems likely. Also, the camera hardly ever shows him, so it was really hard to get a screencap of him.

I did watch it!! I loved it! My fav drama from 2022!! I love this request!!!

Your hands shake as you sit the cup down on the table. Sungjun? A killer? Couldn’t be. You look over at Sungjun’s parents as they had the same look you did.

“No, that can’t be true. Is it?” His father says

“Of course not! Sungjun would never murder someone” you say

You start shaking at the headline on the news. No way your boyfriend was behind all those murders. He literally chased Jung manchu DOWN and they believe he’s the one behind the killings?

A few hours later sunghoon was standing before you and his parents with a displeased look on his face

“Why’d he have to do this now?! My big day is in two days!” His mother whines

“Sunghoon where is he?” You ask. Sunghoon looks over at you before sighing deeply

“I don’t know” he says

“How do you not know?! Do you not pay any attention to your brother?!” She asks raising her voice

“My apologies mother, I’ll try to look for him. Yn could you help?” He asks

You nod grabbing your coat and purse biding his parents a goodbye before going out and getting inside his car

“I can’t believe him” sunghoon mumbles

“Excuse me?“ you say looking at him

It was silent as you two shared eye contact

“Do you seriously think Sungjoon did this?” You ask when he looked down at the ground and didn’t say anything you had your answer

“I can’t believe you. Sungjun would NEVER and we both know that. What kind of brother are you?” You ask

“Come on Yn! Don’t tell me you don’t expect this from Sungjoon” he says making you frown

“I don’t, I know him and I know he wouldn’t do something like this” you say

“You shouldn’t be so trusting” he says making you scoff

“I’ll look for him myself, asshole” you say before getting out and slamming his car door with extra force.

Sunghoon sighs in defeat.

You walk into Inseongs place you sit down with captain oh and seokgu. Soon detective kang walks into scoffing at you

“What’re you doing here?” He ask sittinf down across from you

“Talking” you say

“About? Sungjun? You know where he is don’t you” he says

“If I did I wouldn’t tell you” you say making him scoff

“You could go to jail for hiding the location of a killer” he says

You slam your hand down on the table causing everyone there, including him, to jump

“Sungjun is NOT the killer and I think we both know that” you say

“I don’t know what you see in him” he asks shaking his head

“Your fucking pathetic” you say standing up walking away leaving him with a shock look on his face.

You go outside taking a deep breathe. It seemed to get a lot hotter. You take the navy blue scrunchy off your wrist pulling your curls into a messy puff pushing back the curls that didn’t fit.

“Excuse me? Yn?”

You turn around seeing a women.

“Yes?” You ask

“Can you come here please?” She asks

You look her up and down before slowly walking over to her.

“You are Yn correct?” She asks

“I am…who’s asking” you ask looking her up and down

“I’m Eun-ki…and I know where Sungjun is” she says whispering the last part

Your eyes go wide as you step closer to her. You look around before speaking again

“Do you really? Is he okay? Where is he?” You ask eyes shaking in worry

“He is fine, he asked that I give this too” she says handing you a folded piece of paper

You look at the paper before taking it

“Don’t read it here…please” she says looking behind you

You turn around seeing Detective kang standing outside looking over at you

You look over at her and nod

“Thank you, please keep an eye on him. He tends to wonder off and They’re searching for her pretty heavily” you say making her nod

You slide the paper into your bra and head back over to inseong

“Who’s that?” Detective kang asks

“One of jury’s, asked me about the investigation” you say

“And what did you say?” He asks

“I told her to tell you to kiss my ass” you say pushing past him

He laughes sarcastically before following you into the restaurant

After you get home you sit and wait for sunghoon to come over after you called. Soon you heard the keypad signaling that he was here

“You called? He asked coming inside

“Sungjun reached me” you say

“What did he say?” He asks

You don’t anything. You just hand him the note. He takes it reading over it. He looks over at you before handing it back

“You believe him?” He asks

“You don’t? You genuinely think he did this?” You ask

“They have hard evidence Yn” he says

You sigh before looking over to him

“Sunghoon, I know Sungjun didn’t do this. What reasons does he have to go and kill people?” You ask

“I don’t know, Sungjun has always been the violent type and you know that” sunghoon says making you scoff

“So because he beat people up i middle school means he’s the killer? Be realistic sunghoon” you say

“No Yn, you be realistic” he says making you shake your head

“I am being realistic I know he didn’t do this!” You say causing him to sigh

“You have to report this Yn” he says

“What? No! They’ll find him!” You say

“It’s best” he says you sigh before going into your purse pulling out a stack of cash handing it to him

“What’s this?“ he asks

“S-so you won’t tell. Sungjun didn’t do this and a need some time to prove it. You take this and say nothing” you say tears welling in your eyes

He sighs pushing your hand down pulling you into a hug.

“I don’t need or want your money Yn.” He says rubbing your back

By all that you were doing to clear sungjun’s name he knew you loved and cared about his brother. It was now his mission to help you.

Sungjoon throws his hat to the floor before looking over at Eun-ki

“I told you he wouldn’t help” he mumbles to her

“I told you he would” she says making Sungjoon stare at her in confusion

Before he could say anything Sunghoon was walking up the stairs. He stands up quickly

“Sunghoon” he says

Before he could respond another voice was heard

“Sunghoon! What is this place?”

Sungjun peeks over His shoulder as his eyes go wide

“Yn” he says causing you to look over at him.

“Sungjun!” You quickly say and without another word you were running over to him. He opens his arms welcoming you into his embrace. He melts as he face plants into your curls.

“Yn” he mumbles into your hair

You pull away pushing him away from you before hitting his arm

“Aw! Yn what the hell” he says

“You idiot! How the hell are you being framed for MURDER” you say

“I-I don’t know” he says

“Out of everything you can get in trouble for YOU get in trouble for murder! This doesn’t even shock me! I know your dumbass didn’t do it…did you?” You asks

“What? No! Of course not!” He says making you nod

“Who’s she to him exactly?” Eun-ki asks

“His girlfriend” Sunghoon reply’s

“G-girlfriend?!” She asks making the man nod

“Something the matter” he asks looking at her shocked face

“Nothing! Just didn’t expect him to be seeing anyone” she says making Sunghoon nod

“It still surprises me how he got her too” Sunghoon says

“Your such a dumbass Sungjun. Detective kang is really gonna be on your ass now because he’s already on mine!” You say pinching his arm

“Ow! You don’t think I know that? Instead of chastising me maybe give me a hug! I haven’t seen you in what feels like a week!” He says swatting your hand away

“It’s not my fault your being framed” you say pinching him again

“Ow! Yn stop!“ he says trying to pinch you back

“Don’t pinch me! Your going to pinch me after you had me worried about you?!” You ask now swatting him

He stops with a sigh. He pulls you into a hug resting his chin on top of your head

“I know, I didn’t mean to make you worry. I’m sorry sweetheart” he says rubbing your shoulder

“She’s not the only one you need to be apologizing to” sunghoon says

“Excuse me?” Sungjun says pulling away from you

“Mom is pissed! Dad is worried, not to mention you stressed Yn to no end” sunghoon says

“Hey! Don’t you think I know that? I’ve already apologized to Yn and I will apologize to mom and dad when I clear my name” he says

“Clear your name? Sungjun your always at the scene of the crime. There may be no clearing your name” sunghoon says

“Eun-ki can you leave us for a moment?” Sungjun says

“Uh sure” she says leaving. After the door closed Sungjun walks over to sunghoon with an angry look

“I said I was sorry alright. The least you can do is act as if your happy I’m okay after I’ve been kidnapped and tortured” he says

“Kidnapped and tortured?” Sunghoon says

“Yeah! Mr.beak is convinced I’m the one who killed his daughter. He tortured me” he says lifting up his shirt to show the bloody bandage

You sigh before sitting down on the makeshift bed. The two brother began to argue again but soon stoped when they heard sniffles

Sungjoon walks over to you taking your hands in his

“Yn? Baby what’s wrong? Why are you crying?” He asks

“Because sunghoon look around! Look at the fucked up mess your in! How In the fuck are you going to clear your name?” You ask

He sighs before wrapping his arms around you

“I don’t know baby and I’m sorry for worrying you like this” he says sighing

“I don’t want this for you” you say looking at him with teary eyes

He looks you in the eye with a smile and chuckles before wiping your tears

“You are so beautiful when you cry” he says making you laugh

“Not the time Sungjun. Not the time at all” you say making him laugh

“I know, I couldn’t help myself” he says leaning in to kiss your lips.

“I have to get out of here and back in our bed” he says smirking at you causing you to giggle

“Actually I would love that” you say

Before the conversation could go any further sunghoon gags

“Still here” he says

“Apologies brother” Sungjun says

“Yeah whatever, me and Yn will be back tomorrow. You don’t move. DONT go anywhere” sunghoon says pointing

“Fine! You just take care of Yn” Sungjun says making you scoff

“I’m a big girl I don’t need him” you say folding your arms

“You couldn’t open the peanut butter this morning” sungjoon says making your jaw drop

“Sunghoon! That was confidential!” You say

“Oh that’s nothing new, she can never open the peanut butter” Sungjun says waving him off

“Sungjun!”You say turning around

“Love you bye” he says pecking your lips

You groan and follow sunghoon outside getting into his car. You both sit there for a moment in silence

“Still think he did it?” You ask

“I never did” he says pulling off

Okay so I know that Rowoon and Juho live alone, separately. Inseong & Dawon live in one dorm with another person, manager I think. Youngbin + Jaeyoon + roommate in one room, Taeyang + Hwiyoung + roommate in another and Chani has his own room I think in the other new dorm.

“Come with me,” He mutters as he steps forward, he grabs onto your hand and practically pulls you towards the bedroom, you could feel something shifting inside you with how tight he was holding onto your hand. Whatever had happened, you will have to ask later, because right now, you knew you weren’t going to get the opportunity, it was rare for him to be like this, and when he was… fuck, you could just expect to be left breathless and with your mind spinning. Once you reach the room, he almost harshly releases your arm and turns towards you. “On your knees,” You quickly comply and sink down onto your knees.

“Sit down on the bed, let me erase everything for you,” You say and bite your lip as you bat your eyes at him, he licks his lips before taking a few steps back and sits down on the edge of the bed, spreading his legs. You could feel a type of hunger growing inside you, a hunger for his cock in your mouth, you move onto your hands and slowly crawl towards him, his eyes quickly dart to the shirt that was sitting a little loose and was giving him the perfect view of your cleavage.

A short list of kpop idols and their likely MBTI types. I know most have "found" their type by using 16personalities, but it does not actually use MBTI. This half will focus on perceiving function doms (Ni, Ne, Si, Se).

These are just brief explainations as I did not want to make this post too long. I will provide more in depth analysis later.

Sana's Ne is prominent in their reality shows, especially during problem solving. She also has the typical Ne optimism and curiousity.

Keonhee is honestly a very typical ENFP - having the creativity and "randomness" of Ne.

Jonghyun's humor and wit was always very Ne based, he was quite the chatterbox and "random", his Ne-Fi is especially prominent in his songs.

Si dom types are orderly, detail oriented, and realistic. They stick to the familiar, not seeing the need to try something new. If it's not broken, why fix it? They rely on their past experiences to get through obstacles. Out of the other types, Si doms are the most in tune with their body - sensing functions are concerned with physicality and having an internalized sensing function focuses on their inner body and mind. Because of their preference to stick with routine, they can be uncomfortable with change and may struggle to adapt to new situations (inferior Ne). Abstract concepts may be difficult to understand or they may just not care for it.

ISTJ (Si - Te - Fi - Ne)

TWICE Jeongyeon, ATEEZ Jongho, EXO Xiumin

ISTJs seek order and structure, preferring to have efficient routines and plans. They are practical and systematic. They're the enforcers of organization and routine, which may be how they get called traditionalists. They're very loyal though due to Si - Fi wanting to stick to what they know and trust works.

Jeongyeon is the clean freak in TWICE. She gets upset when the others do not clean up. She keeps to herself (Si-Fi), not really having curiousity/interest in building more relationships or in the deeper meaning of life (inferior Ne).

Jongho is good at organizing his environment, knowing how to delegate tasks and order when he's in a position of power. But other than that, he also works fine behind the scene.

Xiumin is a neat freak too, very typical of Si doms. He's very task and result oriented (Te). He's quite reserved and tame with his emotional expression (Fi), with Chen even saying he's a bit mysterious.

Taeyeon likes plans, dislikes when things go off tangent, does not like new/unusual situations. She has the protectiveness and motherly nature of Fe.

Soobin seems to revolve a lot of his choices around others, showing concern and care for others (Fe). He has always lived in routine, does not question or stray from it (Si).

Se dom types live for present moment, enjoying and appreciating life as they experience it. Se dom types are realistic, straightforward and direct, always pointing out the obvious. They may be physically energetic people and have a good eye for details. Due to their inferior Ni, they can struggle with impulsiveness as they may not consider future consequences of their actions. Se makes them very opportunistic individuals who will just do it.

ESTP (Se - Ti - Fe - Ni)

“Is she? I had no idea that she was going to the event,” Jaeyoon told them.

“You knew very well that Y/N was going, liar.”

Dawon:

With a figure beside him, Sanghyuk could tell that someone was staring, glancing across at Chanhee. “Can I help you?” Sanghyuk asked, turning his phone away.

“You’re scrolling through Y/N’s social media feed once again,” Chanhee pointed out to him, “did you find out any secrets or find out where she is so that you can go and find her and stalk her or something?”

Sanghyuk’s eyes rolled as Chanhee sniggered, “is it a crime to look through someone else’s social media feed? I’m not doing anything wrong.”

“Are you really not doing anything wrong?” Inseong questioned as he listened in to the two of them, “you’re constantly looking at her feed, even when she doesn’t post.”

Sanghyuk’s head shook back at them all, “if you must know, Y/N actually posted a new photo today so that’s why I was looking at her account, thousands of her fans will do the same.”

“You’re not just a fan though, you crush on her,” Jaeyoon also reminded him.

“I don’t crush on her, I just like her, that’s all.”

Zuho:

A hand tapping on his shoulder made Juho jump, looking back to see Taeyang with a wide smile on his face. “Were you really watching videos of Y/N once again?”

“It’s not just Y/N, it’s the drama that she’s in,” Juho defended, turning his phone off and placing it back into his pocket. “Why are you creeping up on me like some weirdo anyway? That’s hardly fair at all.”

A shake of the head came from Taeyang as he joined Juho on the sofa, “you’re only watching that drama because it has Y/N in it, aren’t you?”

“That might have something to do with it,” Juho admitted with a chuckle, “but that’s only because I enjoy watching her, I mean she’s such a great actress.”

Taeyang hummed as he watched him, eyes narrowing across at Juho. “So, it’s just because she’s a great actress and nothing to do with the fact that you have a huge crush on her?”

“That might have the tiniest influence, but it’s not the main reason,” Taeyang grinned.

“You’ve always been such a terrible liar you know.”

Rowoon:

His eyes were scanning the room everywhere, that was until Youngbin appeared in front of him. “What are you looking for? You’ve barely paid attention to any of us all evening.”

“He’s looking for Y/N,” Youngkyun immediately spoke up, reading the expression on Seokwoo’s face like a book. “He’s not been able to find her all evening, but he knows that she’s around here somewhere.”

Seokwoo sunk down in his seat as the other boys looked across at him too. “Is that true? You’re not listening for us because you’re looking for Y/N?”

“I am listening,” Seokwoo tried his best to protest, “but I guess I’m not really looking at you guys because I’m trying to look around for Y/N instead.”

Several of the boys shook their heads back at him, “the two of you aren’t even together, you’re just crushing, and for some reason you’re acting as if you need to protect her or something.”

“I just want to see her, I’m curious what she’s wearing tonight,” Seokwoo explained.

“You really are absolutely head over heels for her.”

Yoo Taeyang:

The boys were exhausted as they came off of the stage, with Taeyang immediately getting himself a bottle of water. “I’m not surprised you need that after how hard you worked.”

“What do you mean?” Taeyang asked, looking to his left and noticing Jaeyoon watching him closely, throwing his arm around Taeyang’s shoulders too. “We all work hard whenever we’re up on stage performing.”

Jaeyoon’s head shook back across at him, “someone seemed like they were working harder, perhaps because Y/N might’ve been in the crowd.”

“I just danced like I normally do,” Taeyang shrugged, but Jaeyoon wasn’t having any of it as Chanhee walked across and joined their conversation too.

Taeyang looked to him for help, but Chanhee’s head shook at him too. “You were definitely trying harder, you roll your hips at the best of times, but you were really going for it then.”

“Do you think I danced enough to get Y/N’s attention up there?” Taeyang quizzed.

“There’s no way that her eyes wouldn’t have been on you.”

Hwiyoung:

A groan came from Youngkyun as he looked in the mirror, trying his best to fix his hair. “Who are you impressing?” Juho asked just beside him, washing his hands in the sink.

“Nobody, my hair just doesn’t look it’s best,” Youngkyun shrugged in reply to him, running his hands through his hair so that he could try and part it again. “Why today of all days is my hair just not playing ball?”

As Juho continued to watch him, slowly things began to fall into place. “You’re not fixing your hair because Y/N is here tonight, are you?”

“Don’t be stupid,” Youngkyun stuttered, his wavering voice enough to let Juho know that he had got things spot on. “I always like for my hair to look nice.”

A snigger escaped Juho, keeping his eyes firmly on Youngkyun. “Do you really think if Y/N sees you she’ll notice if you’ve got a strand of hair out of place? She won’t be that bothered.”

“I’m not running the risk of something not being perfect,” Youngkyun assured him.

“Trust me, she just needs to take one look at your handsome face.”

Chani:

A shy smile formed on Chanhee’s face as Youngbin read through the list of names of artists who would be at the event they were attending. “Y/N’s going to be there too.”

“Look at his face at the mention of Y/N,” Sanghyuk immediately chuckled, glancing across at Chanhee, encouraging the rest of the boys to do the same too. “You’re going to go crazy there tonight now.”

Chanhee’s head shook back across at him, “I’m just going to be how I normally am, nothing’s going to change just because Y/N’s there.”

“Aside from the fact that you’re probably just going to stare at her all night long,” Youngkyun interrupted, “and daydream about being with her.”

A sigh came from Chanhee as a couple of the other boys interjected too. “Y/N probably won’t even look in my direction so there’s no point standing here wondering what might happen tonight.”

“But deep down you’re hoping that you might speak to her,” Inseong added.

“Of course, I’d love for her to finally notice me properly.”

Build Up Ep 6 Recap Part 1: Bad News

Welcome back to the only recap series about MNET’s Build Up that is being written by me! In the previous post, we finished episode 5 (almost) and covered the first performance of round one of the 3x3 death match, Pray (I’ll Be Your Man). In this one, we’ll cover the ranking from the end of episode 5 and then dive in to the second performance, Bad News. There will also definitely be some actual bad news, no matter which team you prefer. Let’s face the music.

First things first I’m the realest: Let’s cover the ranking from the end of episode 5, which I forgot to mention in the previous recap. I am not clear what these rankings are for, as a lot of the people on the list have already been eliminated, but here we are. Those who have been eliminated already have a strike through in their name. I also will note how much they rose/fell since the previous ranking. Here we go:

Ok, let’s get to episode 6!

Once we get the recappy stuff out of the way, we get back to the second team to perform, the team consisting of Bain, Bitsaeon, and Kim Minseo. In the previous round, Bain and Minseo sang River and came in second place; new recruit Bitsaeon had been partnered with Jay for their excellent (but losing) performance of Dangerously.

The team is really nervous because the stakes are high and the previous team, Jeup’s team, did really well with Pray (I’ll Be Your Man).

Dahee asks Team Bitbain if they’re nervous. The English captions punk out a bit, but it’s the same clip that we saw at the end of episode 5. Basically Bitsaeon just says that the other team did well, but they themselves practiced hard too and believe in themselves.

VCG encourages them, saying “You were my top three in the last round.” That doesn’t quite make sense, since they weren’t a team of three in the last round, but I get what he means. They’re good! They’re really good. We’re reminded of how well Bitsaeon did with Dangerously and how well the other two did with River.

Then we’re also reminded of the Rival Choosing ceremony, when Jay’s team went to the Moodboard of Doom and set it so that Team Bitbain would have to face the team they most wanted to avoid -- Jeup’s team. Guys, I don’t feel well. Why did these two teams have to get matched up? Sigh.

Bitsaeon says he’s been thinking about song selection.

When he thinks about Jeup’s team and their harmonies, it makes him feel dizzy. He kind of wants to avoid going straight up against Jeup’s team by also doing insane high pitched harmonies. Instead, he wants to come up with a song that will be unexpected. Bain and Minseo feel like Bitsaeon knows what he’s doing and are happy to let him strategize.

On a day that we’re told is the next day but clearly isn’t based on how much everyone’s hair has grown…

Bitsaeon says he wants something kind of like River or Dangerously, but “upgraded” -- something new. Bain seems to be the one who suggests Kiss of Life’s song Bad News. I knew I liked Bain. You guys, I’m a Bain fan for life.

You guys, I don’t even talk about how much I love, love, love, LOVE Kiss of Life because I feel like they’re invisible somehow. I just don’t see people talking about them. But omg, I love them. They’re so talented, and they’re all adults. They’re like a supergroup but they’re rookies. I love them so much. Let me just tell you about them for a moment.

Natty was the ultra talented li’l baby on Sixteen, the show that created Twice. She’s Thai and is a fantastic and charismatic dancer, and also a singer of unusual range

Belle is an S+ tier singer with whistle tone ability. She’s like Ariana Grande or something, but she also writes songs, and in fact co-wrote Unforgiven by Le Sserafim.

Julie is from Hawaii and has a velvety vocal color and the best smile and the most swag and can also pirouette on one foot like what what are you

Haneul is the only fully Korean member and is a cute maknae who attracts a lot of stans, and is also a very good vocalist

They do a thing where their videos are like mini movies with intersecting storylines. So, if you want to watch the video for Bad News, be sure to watch the video for Nobody Knows right after it to get the rest of the story. Also, then you should watch a live performance of Nobody Knows because their live singing is unbelievable and also the choreography is EVERYTHING.

I’ve been thinking about how a team should have done Nobody Knows as their song for the second round, because it’s so sexy and interesting, but then I thought, yeah, but Kiss of Life are rookies -- would anyone even know these songs? And they do! And my favorite team is going to do one! I’m so happy!! Even if they lose, this is going to be a great performance.

Ok anyway back to it. The on screen captions describe Bad News as a mix of rock and hip-hop, which is fair, and Bitsaeon says that it’s different from anything they’ve done so far, which is also true. They’re having a little trouble deciding how to handle Belle’s really cute squeak on the word “moves” in the chorus. Bain is a little stressed out about it but it sounds good. He says he’s going to practice it to death.

Oh no, Bain, please don’t overpractice and destroy your voice.

The performance begins.

I actually like the song slightly better in this key, and they made it more Western-y and less hip-hoppy and I love it, which surprises me because I don’t listen to country music or anything. But this WORKS. Ok, let’s see the live version. Please, oh please, may Bain’s voice hold out.

My thoughts:

Well, this was obviously fantastic. Amazing, great, loved it, perfect, wouldn’t change a thing about the performance itself. I have to assume, without seeing any of the others, that this performance would have/could have/should have beaten almost any other performance.

And just as obviously, it will lose this round.

They spent too much time rapping and not enough time showcasing their fantastic vocals, and the song is just not emotional enough to overcome the juggernaut of Jeup’s team.

I mean, maybe I’m wrong and they win but I feel pretty sure that they lost. I’m just glad they went down swinging and hopefully they won some new fans.

Minseo was possibly the weakest of the three, and he was still fantastic. I think some of the notes were slightly too deep for him, and others were a tiny bit too high, and it made him occasionally a bit pitchy. But I still love, love, love his vocal color, his absence of nasality, and his swagger and confidence on stage. Minseo, fighting! I hope you debut soon!

I also love Bitsaeon’s voice. He shines so much better with this team than he did with Jay’s. Like, ok, maybe he didn’t wear a fuzzy sweater this time, but he sounded like a real rapper when he rapped and his power notes were powerful. No nasality, no pitchiness, just all good technique and plenty of stage presence. Bitsaeon, fighting! I’ll keep up with M.O.N.T. to keep up with you!

Bain has my favorite voice of the three. Ok, is he Park Jeup? No. He doesn’t have Jeup’s insane range. But Bain’s natural vocal color is nicer than Jeup’s (to me) and he can still hit fairly high notes without straining or using falsetto. I can feel the proper technique just oozing out of him. He’s so good. Also, he raps just as well as he sings. He hits every consonant and vowel and brings interest and *blam* to it as he goes.

I don’t know, fam -- for me he’s got that RM / Joohoney energy that I love so much in an idol. Like, ok, maybe he doesn’t meet Kpop beauty standards but he doesn’t have to because he has an “it” factor on stage. Like his “to the left to right back and forth…” part in the bridge, I mean, it was kind of sexy, wasn’t it? Also, I’m predicting now that his “on & on & on” toward the beginning will get an instant replay and reaction. Let’s see if I’m right.

In the MNET edit, we hear a judge call out “Oh, cowboy!” in English at the start. And overall, everyone seems to be having a great time watching. The other contestants look amazed and the judges are bopping. And yes, of course, Bain’s “on & on & on” did get an instant reply.

VCG cheers for Bain’s high pitched squeals.

Jaehwan jumps to his feet.

I feel like this is the most we’ve seen Wendy enjoy a performance on the show.

Backstage, balladeer Yoon Inhwan turns to Donghun and says, “It’s as if he’s possessed!” (I think he’s talking about Bain.)

Dahee is also having a great time.

When they’re done, everyone cheers.

Sorichir-ra! (MAKE SOME NOISE!!)

Geonu points like, “that’s my teammate!”

Everyone loved it. Someone -- I think Wendy? -- says “I was completely slain by Bain.” Yes, Bain was undoubtedly the MVP here. VCG and Jaehwan, still talking about Bain, say “He’s at his peak. He totally knows what’s going on. He totally knows what he’s good at.” Wendy agrees, saying, “IT all comes out on stage.”

It’s time for the judges to evaluate, and they don’t really want to, you can tell. They’re like, “how do you judge something like this?” It’s like choosing between a pair of shoes and a bowl of ice cream. Like, what do you want to do with it? What do you need right now?

Baekho says, “I have nothing to say. It was just so good. I forgot that it was a survival program -- it felt like I was just watching a concert.”

Dahee is grinning, looking over at the guys to see how this praise is affected them, but you can see that it’s not quite enough. They won’t feel at peace until they know the actual outcome.

But Dahee is still the best. What is she wearing? What is that? She’s still the best.

Baekho goes on, “There was a part that was particularly impressive. Bain-shi, the performance really showed how well you use your voice.” And we get the “on&on&on” part again. Fair.

EVERYONE, I TOLD YOU ABOUT BAIN. I TOLD YOU.

Baekho continues, “Bain gets possessed on stage! If there were someone like him on my team, I’d feel so thankful.”

Wendy says, “I really enjoyed watching it. I felt like I was watching a concert, too.” She likes how they walked in at the beginning, like cowboys, and how they kept the energy up.

VCG asks Minseo how long he has been a trainee, and he says 4 years. VCG says that if Minseo is this good after only a few actual performances, what more is he capable of in the future? Both VCG and Solar are excited to see where he goes next. Solar is like, “You’re obviously with an agency, right?” And Minseo says, “um, actually… no…” And Solar is like WTF? VCG says that if he were CEO of an agency, he’d take Minseo immediately. I think that’s on the horizon….

Backstage, Woong looks right into the camera and says “Brand New Music! Call him right now!!!” (At least, I think that’s what he says. They bleep out part of the company name.)

I guess there’s no time to compliment Bitsaeon, which is a bummer; I think he also did really well. But now it’s time to make BPR Unnie unhappy.

The judges have to vote for which team did better, and they joke about going on strike, saying that they just can’t choose. But they do choose, of course.

COMMERCIAL BREAK!

I repeat, who are we losing of my two favorites, Jeup or Bain?

The blue votes are for Team Bit-Bain, and the red votes are for Jeup’s team. So guest judge, Wendy, and Jaehwan went with team Bit-Bain, while Baekho, Solar, VCG, and Eunkwang went for Jeup’s team.

We’re losing Bain, Bitsaeon, and Minseo.

They hold it together with dignity. Bain even has it in him to give the other team the thumbs up. Class act.

Jeup is sort of pacing around with his hand on his ribcage, as if he’s trying to calm his heart. He’s crying a little. Oh, no, MY heart! And your heart! WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT ALL OUR HEARTS?

Suhwan steps forward to speak on behalf of his team, and says things like they worked hard and think both teams did well and thank you everyone and yadda yadda.

Dahee talks to Jeup, saying, “You must have been very nervous.”

Baekho picks up his mic and says, “Careful now, you’ll lose your muscles if you don’t stop crying.” If anyone would know, it’d be Baekho!

Jeup clears his throat and says, “I normally don’t cry. Actually, this performance was a bit scary. The other team was so good, and I’m the oldest member of my team. I thought I shouldn’t let my teammates know about my anxiety. I think it was very difficult in many ways. Before the performance, I told my teammates to be calm, but I think I was talking to myself. Thank you, everyone.”

Dahee says that Bain, Bitsaeon, and Minseo have been eliminated.

Bain says, “I had a lot of fun on stage. Bitsaeon and Minseo worked so hard.”

He’s fighting back tears, but he goes on. “Of course, I do feel sad. But it was great to show you myself through Build Up.

The judges reassure them that they really did a really good job too. They’re sad that they have to send away a team that did so well.

But backstage, Bain’s team seems to be relatively at peace. They know they did well and they’re still proud of the job they did, even if they’re sad that they lost. At least they went out on a high note.
