An introduction to SamBucky dynamic for someone out there who is probably new to the fandom:

There's Sam, a cinnamon roll put on this ungodly Earth and having to deal with all these bigots and insane people. The man walks down the street and babies smile, little birds and animals start to sing, the sun comes out. He fine and likes wine.

And then there's his Bucky, behind him, glaring at potential enemies and random empty-soul reporters. Is his fist clenched? Maybe. Will he knock your lights out? Depends on you. Grumbling until Sam smiles at him and he's soft™ for 5 sec, then back to staring. Beer goes right through him.

They cuddle. A lot. Sometimes there's cats.

Little Writing Snippet for Y’all because I don’t think I could make an entire oneshot about it! And it’s SamBucky/Winterfalcon themed!

Sam: So… What do you want to do today?

Bucky: I don’t know. What are you thinking?

Sam: *thinking* I think we could stay at home today. Maybe cuddle up on the couch in our PJs, drink some hot coco…

Bucky: Maybe Netflix and Chill…

Sam: *stares at Bucky shocked and confused*

Bucky: *equally confused* Did I say something wrong, Sam?

Sam: You know what “Netflix and Chill” is, right?

Bucky: Isn’t that where you watch Netflix all day?

Sam: You know what Netflix is, but not Netflix and Chill?

Bucky: *completely lost* ThErE’s A dIfFeReNcE?!?

Sam: *facepalms* Oh boy…

*Sam explains to Bucky that Netflix and Chill in fact DOES NOT mean watching Netflix all day*

Bucky: *still comprehending the information* So… Let me get this straight…Netflix and Chill means… to hook up?

Sam: Yep, you got it.

Bucky: I’m sorry for making you think that I wanted to fuck you all day.

Sam: It’s okay… Speaking of, who told you that?

Summary: Sam learns that he has become Bucky's safe place.

Excerpt:

It had become a common occurrence, every time they return to the Quinjet, for Bucky to lay his head on Sam's shoulder. Sam knew this meant something. Coming from a super soldier who needs half the rest Sam does. Coming from his stubborn partner who never lets down his guard. For Bucky Barnes to willingly let his eyes fall shut and place his head on Sam's shoulder means everything.

Sam didn't make a big deal out of it. And like dealing with a cat, Sam never moves until absolutely necessary when Bucky's in contact with his shoulder. He doesn't want to disturb the peace or break the idea that this is okay, this is allowed. And so, it becomes routine. Every time they return to the jet.

See the thing is, most people don't know this about Bucky Barnes. There's a softness to him. It took a while even for Sam to see. Took months to break the cold, rigid exterior but once it was gone, Bucky is all soft underneath. He doesn't like to show it and for the most part, he never does. But when he lets someone see it, he's like a puppy with big round eyes begging you to cuddle.

Y’all know I’m all about sambucky being cat dads™️ but them being dog dads is just as good actually. It’s especially hilarious because they’re so obviously cat people and absolutely no one expects them to have a dog.

But one time after a mission they’re walking and they hear this whining and they find a little puppy hiding behind a dumpster and it’s cold and dark and they’re like ‘well we can’t just leave him here!’, so Bucky opens his jacket and carry the puppy there and they buy him food and they take him home all while being ‘we’re not keeping him! just until we find him a home! we’re not even gonna name him!’

But when one of them is having a nightmare, he sneaks into the room and licks their face until they wake up. He loves cuddling Bucky while he reads and staying as close as possible to Sam as he works on Redwing, or when he’s cooking. He loves Cass and AJ so much and is very protective of them. Sarah pretends so hard she disapproves but she absolutely melts at the puppy’s big brown eyes and ends up cuddling him all day and sneaking him all the treats.

So, yeah. They keep the dog. Probably end up naming him Gandalf or something. (Bucky’s fault. He called him that as a joke and now he only answers to it. And maybe Goodest Boy.)

He looked younger in his sleep.

Sam.

He looked so peaceful as he slept on Bucky's couch. He was even making those snores that should not be as adorable as they were.

Bucky hadn't been expecting Sam yet. Sam had been away on a mission for a few weeks, and from what Sam had said on their short call two days ago, Sam should have been on that mission for at least another week.

Bucky wasn't mad, though. He cherished whatever small piece of Sam's downtime Sam used to visit him. Sam had a permanent guest room in the Citadel, yet he kept showing up at Bucky's house in the middle of nowhere, just wanting to hang out.

If Bucky knew, he would have turned the couch into a bed for Sam. He understood sometimes Sam couldn't warn him about when a mission ended, though. That was okay. That was what Sam's spare key was for.

Sam must have fallen asleep while waiting for Bucky to come home from his morning with his goats, judging by the position Sam was sleeping in and the fact that Sam was still wearing jeans.

It felt almost wrong to wake Sam up. The angle he was sleeping in wasn't going to be good for his back or his neck, though, and Sam deserved to sleep on a pullout bed at the very least.

Bucky sat down next to Sam. He reached a hand out. He stopped.

"Sam?" Bucky said softly, "Sam, you need to wake up. Just for a moment. So I can get you on the pullout."

Bucky heard grumblings from Sam as he scrunched his face. Half asleep, Sam squinted up at Bucky. Bucky's heart skipped a beat as Sam reached his hand out and... booped Bucky's nose.

Bucky snorted.

Sam grinned.

"You're back," said Sam in a low rumble of a voice that did things to Bucky.

"I'm back?" said Bucky with a laugh, "You're back. And also. Your back - that's a terrible position to sleep in."

Sam yawned as he sat up and stretched.

"Yeah. I think I slept wrong," grumbled Sam as he rolled his shoulders and moved his neck around.

"Let me," said Bucky warmly as he zeroed in on the knot and massaged it out of Sam.

Sam melted. Leaned onto Bucky.

"When did you get so good at that?" mumbled Sam into Bucky's shirt.

"When I found out the guy who visited me never takes care of himself," said Bucky as he helped Sam off of the couch, "Now, let's get the pullout situated so you can take an actual nap."

Sam decided to just... hold onto Bucky. He loosely wrapped his arms around Bucky like some sort of sweater tied to Bucky's hips. Sam sleepily watched Bucky reconfigure the couch, moving with Bucky wherever Bucky went. Bucky liked the warmth of it. Bucky liked when Sam was near him. Bucky hoped Sam liked Bucky near him too.

"Thanks, Buck," yawned Sam as let go of Bucky.

Sam stumbled out of his jeans and flopped onto the bed.

Bucky... was not staring at Sam's ass. Definitely not staring at Sam's ass in his boxer briefs that fit Sam perfectly. Bucky grabbed one of the nearby throw blankets and draped it over Sam.

"Nap with me," mumbled Sam into his pillow, "You know I sleep better when you're next to me."

How could Bucky say no to that?

Bucky crawled onto the bed and lay next to Sam. Sam pulled Bucky closer and cuddled, tangling their legs together.

"I missed you," whispered Sam into Bucky's chest.

Bucky wrapped his arms around Sam, pulling Sam closer.

"I missed you too," whispered Bucky, holding Sam in his arms as he heard Sam's adorable snores return.

Obviously, Bucky being head over heels in love with Sam is an integral part of any good Sambucky story for me. (If he doesn’t think that Sam is the best thing that’s ever happened to him then what’s even the point?)

But my favourite subcategory of this trope is still: “Bucky has no idea, how he managed to convince Sam to spend so much time with him in the first place”. And I’m not even talking about some self-deprecating comments about how he doesn’t deserve good things anymore. No. I’m talking about Bucky having a small existential crisis at least once a week, because he doesn’t understand how it happened that they’re now a couple – it just doesn’t make any sense to him. Given their age and life stories, they shouldn’t have even met, yet here they are, sharing the first kiss or cuddling on a couch, or planning their wedding, or arguing about furnishing their new home in the middle of a mission.

Just Bucky, looking at Sam at any point of the day or night and thinking: “no complaints, but what the fuck? why is he here with me? what did I do right???”.

If someone told Bucky: “Wow! I can’t believe you two are together!”, he’d just answer: “...yeah, me too”.
