Entrevista a una futura mamá

La esperé en la puerta de su casa y cuando salió lo primero que apareció fue la panza de su embarazo, parecía un planeta en órbita, un acontecimiento sideral del cual yo era único testigo. “Esta mierda me está matando” fue lo primero que dijo. Me pregunté si la virgen maría pensó lo mismo.

(Embarazada Nº1 es la persona que también responde el resto de la entrevista escrita en esta nota)

Me entrevisté con ella porque me prometió contarme todo lo que nadie dice de un embarazo, “te cuentan solo lo bueno” me dijo “pero es una estafa, porque si te avisan de TODO poca gente se ilusionaría con la idea, y la raza humana se iría a la mierda mucho antes de que nos mate la inteligencia artificial. Merecemos una mínima advertencia”.

Le pregunté sobre el gesto de tocarse la panza: “Es como tener una faja que te aprieta muchísimo, y la panza te duele. La piel está tensa todo el rato, y cuando crees que te acostumbraste, pum, se mueven o crecen de golpe y vuelta a sufrir” (el plural es porque tiene dos adentro).

Ella caminaba lento “¿Cuánto podés caminar sin empezar a morirte?” consulté, me dijo que por ahora (a mitad del embarazo) entre 5 y 10 cuadras según el día. En ese momento transportaba 1 kilo más adentro, y lo de la piel tensa también es en la espalda, no solo en la panza, no lo dijo ella, lo noté cuando la saludé.

(Mamá Nº3 fue consultada por whatsapp al igual que el resto excepto Embarazada Nº1 que fue presencial)

“Te cuentan lo de que vomitás porque no lo pueden ocultar, pero no te dicen los millones de suplementos que tenés que tomar porque el parásito te chupa todo” me dijo, y me nombró la lista, a lo que respondí “claro, sos como una viejita, o como una enferma terminal de esas que hay que cuidarla de casi todo, solo que tu enfermedad después se convierte en humanos”. Cómo hizo la virgen maría para caminar más de 5 o 10 cuadras y sin suplementos? Milagro. Entendí por qué el promedio de vida en esa época era de 30 años.

“Tenés todos los órganos apretados contra el diafragma, te crecen más pelos y más fuertes y más duros, y ahora por ejemplo no me puedo depilar la concha en paz porque no me la veo directamente”. Fue el único momento en el que no pensé en la virgen maría.

There is something in the water; in the grass; in the air.

These images evoke creeping fantastical horrors, but they are horrific realities in places all over the globe, places tainted with pollutants and contaminants and chemical expressions of human hubris. Samanta Schweblin’s 2014 Argentine novel Fever Dream (Distancia de rescate or “rescue distance” in the original Spanish), takes place in the mind of a poisoned mother, conversing with a strange child about what happened to lead them both to the hospital where they find themselves. It is a quiet, haunting book made up entirely of a single conversation that manages to say everything and yet nothing important.

Fever Dream lives up to its rebranded English title, with its rich atmosphere of surreal suffering. Young mother Amanda is in a hospital bed, feeling her body and brain shut down, and all she can do is go over events with a mysterious boy named David, who once survived his own brush with death, but came out the other end very different. Other characters like Amanda’s daughter Nina and David’s mother Carla are described so richly that the audience knows them, but Amanda and David are the only ones presented first-hand. It is a real triumph for Schweblin to be able to maintain atmosphere and tension over a novel-length conversation, and the feeling of dread around every corner never lets up. Schweblin is truly an author who understands the differences between “terror”, “scares”, and absolute stomach-churning “horror”.

This book will certainly not be for everyone. There are moments, especially with David, that tread right on the line of becoming repetitive, and the incredibly simple plot told with expressive language is not going to be a style that sits well with all audiences. But in a world where humans dump chemicals left and right, with barely a thought to who or what those chemicals will eventually touch, more people could use a little unsettling environmental horror.

Would I Recommend It: Very much yes.
