Salman Khan’s Diwali release Tiger 3 is nearly a week away and the excitement is tremendous. What’s interesting is that it’ll have a solo release of sorts, as no other Hindi or Pan-India South film is clashing on the same day. In fact, Salman Khan has not faced a clash since 2010. The last time that happened was when his 2009 action super-hit film Wanted was released on the same day as Rani Mukerji-starrer Dil Bole Hadippa.

Dabangg (2010), Ready (2011), Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Dabangg 2 (2012), Jai Ho (2014), Kick (2014), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), Sultan (2016), Tubelight (2017), Race 3 (2018), Bharat (2019), Dabangg 3 (2019) and Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (2023) released with no competition. Antim (2021) faced a collision with Satyameva Jayate 2 (2021) but then it didn’t feature the superstar in the lead.

Other stars haven’t been that fortunate. Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale (2015) and Raees (2017) were released alongside Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Kaabil (2017) respectively. SRK is at his best position arguably right now and yet, his next film Dunki will have to share screens with Salaar on Christmas 2023. Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha clashed with Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan last year. Salman’s last few films have not done well and yet, no one is ready to come on the same Friday as him.

We asked trade experts about this rare phenomenon. Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “He has a huge following and is a darling of the masses. The business he has generated over a period of time in mass pockets is phenomenal. Though he has had a rough patch, he's the pied piper of Bollywood.”

Trade analyst Atul Mohan, in agreement, exulted, “Salman is a very big hero of the masses. He has always had such a huge fan following; Shah Rukh Khan ka aisa following ab bana hai. Aamir Khan never had such a mass pull. Salman’s craze is one of a kind. Hence, filmmakers are wary of clashing their films with him. Itna bada hero hai, kaun takkar lega iske saath?”

Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, remarked, “Salman is the only superstar who people want to see on screen. He has the maximum on-screen superstardom out of all the actors. It’s a very critical factor. He’s also not on our social media every time, going to malls, opening ribbons, dancing, etc.”

He continued, “Unfortunately his films have not worked as he hasn’t paid much attention to the storytelling, packaging, direction, etc. He has that power that if he gets these things right, then there’s no stopping him. That’s why many are wary of clashing with him as they know that at least in the opening weekend, their film will get butchered.”

Raj Bansal, the owner of Entertainment Paradise cinema hall in Jaipur, explained, “Salman Khan is an action hero. When no one was doing action, he was the only action excelling in this genre. Somewhere, his confidence shook and he also did non-action films like Tubelight (2017), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), etc. Only Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) worked in this regard. But even when his films were gadbad, they still made Rs. 100 crores plus. There was a time when the hit films of Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn did Rs. 100 crores. But Salman’s flop films do Rs. 100 crores even today! And his hit films have done more than Rs. 300 crores. It’s thanks to him that the industry realized the true potential of a Hindi film. Hence, clashing with him can prove suicidal.”

He also said, “He’s 100% an organic star. Even Sunny Deol is.”

Girish Johar added, “If he moulds himself to the sensibilities that cater to his fans and also provides intelligent content, then sky is the limit. I think Tiger 3 will do well. It ticks all the right boxes.”

Taran Adarsh also said along the same lines, “Tiger 3 being a brand and essaying a role that is much-loved, I am sure it’ll have a great run and a huge opener.”

Trade experts discuss why Animal star Ranbir Kapoor is leaps and bounds ahead of his contemporaries: “You can add him to the league of Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan”

Animal has become the fifth blockbuster of 2023 and the second blockbuster for Ranbir Kapoor after Sanju (2018). The actor is in a unique position – he has delivered 6 flops and a few underperforming films. But he has compensated for it with big hits.

Since his debut film Saawariya (2007), Ranbir has made a place in the hearts of the audience. His charming looks and acting talent made him a performer to watch out for. Off-screen, he has an adorable-yet-badass image, which connected well with the audience. He’s absent from social media and keeps away from media when he doesn’t have a film to promote. But when he appears at events and interviews, he’ll make sure he becomes the talking point before disappearing into his cocoon or work. In today’s times, when actors are all over the place, it’s amazing how Ranbir Kapoor has managed to keep the intrigue alive.

All these factors would not have worked if he wasn’t a talented actor. As trade veteran Taran Adarsh rightly said a few weeks ago in an article for Bollywood Hungama, “You can find fault in his films. But you cannot find fault in Ranbir Kapoor’s performance.”

Ranbir Kapoor has dabbled in various genres and has always come out with flying colours. One can see that he has worked hard to get the character alive. Yet, it looks natural and this balance is hard to achieve. In Animal, he plays a ferocious character, making one forget about his acts in light-hearted films like Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009), Wake Up Sid (2009), Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013) etc. With this film, his stardom has got a boost and it’s clear that he’s now a bona fide superstar. The usage of the prefix ‘Superstar Ranbir Kapoor’ in the posters of Animal did raise some eyebrows. But all these cynics had to eat their words once Animal became a typhoon at the ticket window.

Animal is the second film of Ranbir Kapoor to cross the Rs. 300 crores mark and it’ll be Ranbir’s first film to cross the Rs. 500 crores mark, if all goes well. Besides Shah Rukh Khan and Sunny Deol, he’ll be the third actor to enter the coveted club. Even Overseas, he has a loyal audience. Animal, in fact, was the number one film last weekend, surpassing Hollywood biggies like Napoleon and The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes with a worldwide gross of USD 42.17 million [Rs. 351.38 cr.]. If that’s not all, a viral story in Bollywood Hungama revealed that Ranbir Kapoor has collected Rs. 2018.02 crores from his 21 releases (and counting). He’ll soon surpass Aamir Khan’s cumulative figure of Rs. 2146.94 crores from 30 releases.

The newer lot of actors, interestingly, are far behind Ranbir Kapoor in terms of popularity and box-office record. Hence, is it fair to say that Ranbir Kapoor is leaps and bounds ahead of his contemporaries?

We asked trade experts to comment. Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar said, “Ranbir Kapoor is a special talent. The world knew it from his debut film, Saawariya. He was inconsistent in his choice of films. In my opinion, he tasted superstardom with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. That film was released on a non-holiday and managed to collect close to Rs. 180 crores. It speaks volumes about an actor to achieve this feat in his sixth year as an actor. His next film, Besharam (2013), also opened at Rs. 20-21 crores. Hence, he was already a star then.”

Vishek Chauhan added, “A lot of people might not agree but Barfi (2012) spoiled things for him. It took him on a different tangent. Had he stayed on the commercial tangent, he would have tasted this kind of success much earlier. He deserves every bit of it. He should be doing more of such films. Post-Covid, his choice of films has become more universal. They have become palatable to the common man. Even with Shamshera (2022), the intent was to make a commercially pleasing flick. He wants to play larger-than-life characters, which is very endearing be it Shamshera or Brahmastra or Animal. Even with Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar (2023), he carried the film on his shoulders.” The exhibitor said that he didn’t quite enjoy the film and added, “Had it starred Ranveer Singh instead of Ranbir, the film would not have even collected Rs. 50 crores.”

Trade guru Komal Nahta said, “100% he’s ahead by leaps and bounds because he has now got mass patronage. Earlier, youngsters loved him. Now, the masses have embraced him with open arms and they’ll not let go of him. He has got a new fan following of unimaginable proportions because of Animal.”

Raj Bansal, the owner of Entertainment Paradise in Jaipur, stated, “He’s the next superstar of Indian cinema. I always used to feel that agar Ranbir ko lambi race ka ghoda banna hai, then he should do action films. He was never convinced about it. He did action for the first time and look at the result.”

He continued, “I put him at par with Hrithik Roshan. But he has gone ahead of Hrithik. Hrithik has done 5-6 action films. Animal is perhaps Ranbir’s first action film and this is how it has performed. If he does 5-6 more action films, toh pata nahin yeh kahan se kahan nikal jaayega.”

Vishek Chauhan also stated on the same lines, “For the first time in his life, he has done this kind of action. And look how the masses have lapped it up. It shows that this man can do anything. He was just holding himself back. Isse better action Hindi cinema mein koi kya hi karega!”

Vishek also remarked, “Usually, actors begin their careers with commercial films, make their brand and then do unconventional films. With Ranbir, the process was in reverse. He proved his mettle as an actor and now he’s doing commercial films.”

He excitedly said, “It is so heartwarming to see a young actor rubbing shoulders with the big guns. You can add him to the league of Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan.”

Kiritbhai T Vaghasia, who runs The Friday Cinema multiplex in Surat, revealed that Ranbir Kapoor has an insane fan following among the people in his region, “Brahmastra worked big time. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar was a surprise. I ran that film for many weeks. I was surprised to see the audience turning up in huge numbers even on weekdays in the fifth and sixth weeks though it was not a typical family film. And Animal has also stunned us as it’s ‘A’ rated. Yet, it’s doing blockbuster business. In short, his films always do well here.”

What next? Trade experts advise Ranbir Kapoor to continue doing massy films. Vishek Chauhan opined, “I hope he doesn’t go back and sign a film with Imtiaz Ali. If his next film also has action and mass appeal, watch out for its opening! He should be careful that his next 2-3 films should appeal to both classes and the masses. If he takes care of this aspect, Ranbir can rewrite history!”

Raj Bansal said, “It’s upto him to take the call. He’ll never stick to doing only action films. He’ll keep experimenting like he’s been doing in the past. And that’s okay. If he does 1 or 2 action films out of 5, it’s fine. He has shown his range. If you get him the right script, he’ll deliver”

Komal Nahta agreed, “He should sign a couple of more such films.” He has high hopes for Animal’s sequel, Animal Park, “I can’t even imagine the earthquake Animal Park will cause. It will be huge.”

★ Why did Salman Khan act in ‘Godfather’ without hearing the script and what’s Nayanthara like? Chiranjeevi tells all!

When was the last time that Bollywood superstar Salman Khan agreed to be a part of a film without hearing a word about the movie’s script or his role? Now before the snarky voice in us ridicules him about doing just that for his career’s spectacular misfires, here’s what we learned from Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi who convinced the Bollywood superstar to dip his feet into South India with ‘Godfather’. The Telugu re-make of the Malayalam blockbuster led by Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj is out in UAE cinemas now.

“Salman bhai is a fantastic human being and a lovely person. And when this suggestion to request him to play the character of Masoom Bhai cropped up, it just took one phone call. Without even listening to any details about the story or the character, he gave a nod,” said Chiranjeevi in an e-mail interview with Gulf News. Apparently, the goodwill that Khan had for this matinee idol played a huge catalyst in Khan making his career’s first South Indian debut.

“From the time the idea was discussed, he was onboard within 20 minutes. Such is his love for me and Charan [Ram Charan, Chiranjeevi’s son] . I am very grateful to him for showing so much affection. While shooting we had great fun too,” said Chiranjeevi.

The gamble where Khan flew in blind paid off. ‘Godfather’ – not to be confused with the iconic Hollywood gangster epic – has raked in millions at the box-office worldwide. Reports claim the movie has swiftly entered the revered Rs1billion club since its release last Friday. 'Godfather' is a political thriller that kicks off when a patriarch of a well-connected family dies suddenly and a vacuum is left behind by the patriarch. The power games form the spine of this film.

Salman Khan plays a vital role in this film. What was your equation with him like and what was your take away from working with him?

Likewise not every Bollywood film is a flop. There have been several hits in Bollywood in recent times. We must know that it is always the function of good content to bring in viewers and not about which region the film is coming from. We must move beyond the regional tags. And we must acknowledge that from now on there is only Indian Cinema now and not Bollywood, Tollywood or Mollywood.I

Mohammed Zeeshan slaps him in the film. Just made hope and miracles happened. Actually, the film was not good, so the film was sure to be a flop. Shahrukh Khan is Back in Bollywood with Five Movies after Four Long Years

Shahrukh Khan is one of the biggest stars in India and has a fan following not only in India but across the globe. The last few years were not good for Shahrukh Khan professionally as most of his movies underperformed at the box office. His last release was the Anand L Rai directed Zero in 2018 and it was a major flop. After the failure of Zero, Shahrukh Khan decided to take a break and contemplate about his career and after four years he will be back with five back-to-back movies in the next twenty months. Below are the five movies Shahrukh will feature in near future.

Pathan

Pathan directed by Siddharth Anand of War movie is considered the big comeback of Shahrukh Khan after a hiatus of four years. It is an action drama espionage movie and Shahrukh Khan plays the role of an Indian secret agent in the movie. The movie has DeepikaPadukone opposite Shahrukh Khan and John Abraham is playing the main antagonist in the movie. It’s the part of Yashraj’s Spy Universe and the other movies in this universe are the Tiger series starring Salman Khan and War starring HrithikRoshan and Tiger Shroff. Apparently, Salman Khan has a cameo in Pathan as Tiger.

Lion

Lion is directed by Atlee who is a famous director in the Tamil film industry known for his commercial action movies. The movie also marks the debut of South Indian actress Nayantharain Bollywood. If rumours are to be believed, Shahrukh has a double role in the movie. It’s one of the most anticipated movies next year.

Dunki

RajkumarHirani without a doubt is the top director of Bollywood who never gave a flop in his career. His first movie was the iconic Munnabhai MBBS starring Sanjay Dutt and ArshadWarsi. Shahrukh Khan was the first choice for the role of Munnabhai but he could not do it because of unknown reasons. After Munnabhai MBBS, RajkumarHirani went on to give big hits like LageRahoMunnabhai, 3 Idiots, PK and Sanju. Finally, SRK and RajkumarHirani have collaborated on the upcoming movie Dunki based on the issue of illegal immigrants to London. Like other Hirani movies, Dunki will have the right doses of comedy and emotions. Tapsee Pannu is signed as the heroine of the movie.

Operation Khukri

Not much is known about the movie apart from the fact that it’s directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and will be a war drama based on the famous Operation Khukr, a multinational operation carried out by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Sierra Leone, and it involved countries like India, Ghana, Britain, and Nigeria. Ashutosh Gowariker and Shahrukh Khan earlier worked together in Swades.

Shah Rukh Khan — Karan Johar Movie

If reports are to be believed, Shahrukh Khan and Karan Johar are once again coming together for an action romance movie. They earlier worked together in super hit movies like KuchKuchHotaHai and KabhiKhushiKabhieGham. Shahrukh also did a cameo in Karan Johar’s last release AeDilHainMushkil. This upcoming movie does not have a title yet and it’s rumored that Priyanka Chopra will act opposite SRK in the movie.

Many other Hindi films which released in 2022, some of which I have reviewed and praised, had flopped at the Box Office. This series of flops made people despise Bollywood even more. They thought that Bollywood is nearing its end. Bollywood can never get back on track. For those who thought that Aditya Chopra is finished and for those who thought that King Khan is finished, Pathaan comes as a tight slap on their faces! This movie also packs a violent punch to the faces of Bollywood haters, who have been demeaning Bollywood for the past few years. This time, King Khan makes his electrifying return with an out-and-out action-thriller titled “Pathaan” where he takes on the “He-Man of Bollywood” John Abraham who plays the lead antagonist. Folks, if you are thinking that this action-thriller which was released in theaters worldwide on January 25, 2023, is a hit, then you are wrong! Pathaan is not a hit and neither is it a super-hit. Along with tension and action, there are lighter scenes as well in the fast-paced screenplay which has been written by Shridhar Raghavan. Talking of the entry scenes, where Shah Rukh Khan and John Abraham make their dashing entries, and not to forget, the special appearance mega-entry scene of Salman Khan; such scenes get doubtless applause! The audience at the theater hall went crazy applauding and cheering during the entry scenes of these actors. The commotion was so loud in the theater that you may have felt that the Earth was going to explode! Neither could I hear the background music nor the dialogue they said during their entry scenes. The crowd inside the theater hall had gone completely berserk! The climax was thrilling and exciting as well. In the climax, when Pathaan “saves the day” by putting an end to terrorist leader Jim, the applause and cheering from the audience were unstoppable and went on till the movie ended. I personally don’t find Deepika Padukone appealing as an actress, but I have to confess, she looked ravishing in this movie! Nothing like what she had appeared until now! I have to say, Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone appeared similar to Hollywood stars in this movie. They seemed to have great chemistry together even if Shah Rukh happens to be 20 years elder than Deepika. These two added such charisma to the movie that I felt as if I was watching some Hollywood action-thriller and not a local Bollywood film of my country. And talking of John Abraham’s performance in Pathaan, I bet you would never have ever seen him giving such a master-blaster performance ever before in his entire acting career! He is terrific as a terrorist leader Jim! Supporting actor Ashutosh Rana and actress Dimple Kapadia made their presence felt and lent great dignity to their respective characters of RAW joint secretary, Colonel Sunil Luthra, and covert operation research organization JOCR’s head, Nandini respectively. And of course, there is Salman Khan who bombarded the screens with his star power by making an action-based cameo appearance as RAW agent “Tiger” from the famous “Tiger” franchise of Bollywood films. Visually Appealing With Astounding Special Effects Shah Rukh Khan has trained a lot for this role and has added extra muscle mass to his usual thin frame to appear “bigger”. And he does appear “big” on the big screens not just because of the “extra muscle mass” he has put on but because of the top-grade camerawork and visual effects presented by cinematographer Satchith Paulose. The visual effects and sound effects in this out-and-out action thriller are direly appealing and the action scenes have been shot precisely keeping every detail in mind. Even the background music is fantastic and impactful. Pathaan has two rocking tracks, “Besharam Rang” choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant, and “Jhoome Jo Pathaan” choreographed by Bosco Caesar. Some online nuisance creators like the “Boycott Pathaan Gang” trending on social media have raised a hue and cry that the “Besharam Rang” song in Pathaan has hurt Hindu sentiments. So, they have warned the crowds that they should entirely boycott Pathaan because Hindus, who are the major section of the Indian population, won’t be seeing this movie. Maybe, they felt as Deepika is scantily clothed in a saffron bikini in scenes from “Besharam Rang”, Hindu sentiments will be hurt. However, this track came as a harsh blow on their faces. When this “supposedly Hindu sentiment-hurting” track played in the film, there was absolute chaos in the theater hall! Audiences were going crazy applauding and cheering those bikini scenes which were supposed to hurt Hindu sentiments. These songs have been excellently choreographed. If anything is “bad”, it is the low-grade mentality of certain online activists who are bent upon mindlessly boycotting any Bollywood movie they come across. These people are “allergic” to bikini-clad women and whenever any film shows such scenes, they immediately raise a hue and cry for boycotting the film on the basis of their “so-called” Hindu sentiments. Don’t get me wrong because I am a Hindu myself! So, this is a Hindu telling another Hindu; take it easy man! There’s nothing toxic about these scenes. His narrative style is phenomenal and his direction is wonderful. The editing of Pathaan has been wonderfully performed by Aarif Sheikh, keeping all the sequences as well as fluctuating instances understandable within the run duration of 2 hours and 26 minutes. The filming of Pathaan commenced across various locations in India and worldwide. International filming locations included Dubai, Afghanistan, Spain, Turkey, Russia, Italy, and France. On account of the COVID crisis, the filming faced huge delays. Pathaan is one such Bollywood film that features the two megastar Khans, Shah Rukh and Salman, together. This itself makes the TRP of this out-and-out action thriller huge! Salman makes his electrifying entry inside a train to save Shah Rukh from henchmen in a fight sequence. The star power of these two megastars absolutely blasted the screens! And mind you, Boycott Pathaan Gang! This film is being enjoyed by every section of society, be they Muslims, Hindus, Christians or Sikhs. Please do not try to divide India on the basis of just one film! By the way, this is another anti-Pakistani fictional action-thriller, where terrorist leader Jim is actually an ally of Pakistan. Pathaan is the only Indian film that, I believe, will surpass the popularity of the South Indian super-duper blockbuster action-drama KGF 2. Don't think I am mindless in my judgment. The reason why I am giving this film a 10 out of 10 is because, as an action-thriller, it truly deserves it! You got to watch this and if possible, watch it over and over again!
