There was a surprising amount of sex in Be Mine Superstar! I really wasn’t expecting it…. Similarly, Love Syndrome had a LOT less sex than I was promised by the trailer…

Are there any BLs that had either many more or many less NC scenes than you were expecting before you started watching them?

BLs that exceeded (or underperformed) sexy expectations

Interesting question. So far, not that many Thai BLs. But I think that's just because I pay attention to the pairs and the actors in Thai stuff, and you sort of get a feel for what they will (and won't) take on. So in your examples: I know JaFirst did high heat so I expected the producers to lean into that advantage as part of BMSS because, frankly, it didn't have much else going for it.

I haven't watched Love Syndrome III yet but knowing Frank I wouldn't expect it to go super high heat in terms of actual physical contact.

I guess the ones that have surprised me are mostly out of Thailand are pulps that I knew nothing about going in. Let me see...

Thai BL that ended up being way hornier/better than I expected

Secret Crush On You - such a weird show but BillySeng brought IT, whatever IT is, they got it.

Love in Translation - yeah, what happened in that sauce isle boys? Very saucy. Whatever pun, more please.

2 Moons 3 - about on par with ForthBeam from 2 Moons 2 but nothing else in the previous 2 series would lead one to expect the horny we got in this show on the main.

Second Chance - yeah it was a throw away pulp and this studio is hit or miss on chemistry but it had one of the best kisses of its year.

Big Dragon - I don't know what I expected form the trailers, but it wasn't as good as it turned out to be. Don't get me wrong, the rest of the show is naff, but the chemistry/heat levels are scorching.

Ghost Host, Ghost House - generally the horror stuff doesn't do chemistry well, but these two have some of the best chemistry EVER put into a pulp. I really hope we see more of them.

KinnPorsche - It's no secret I'm not as wild about this show as most, but I did think the VegasPete stuff was unexpectedly killer in all ways.

Oh My Sunshine Night - yeah it was exactly what one expects from OhmFluke but THE SIDES!!!! I mean... WHAT? I'm not mad, just pleasantly surprised.

TharnType - Okay but remember at the time what we'd had from Mame was LBC (relatively low heat) and other Thai stuff I was familiar with at the time was Make It Right, Love Sick, SOTUS, and UWMA. TT was way higher heat that I'd seen from Thailand before. And then...

Why R U? - ZeeSaint's "away trip to the beach" full on sex scenes plus repping for verse was just crazy at the time. Especially since Saint played Pete in LBC before this and Zee was new to BL. Add that to the very odd and disjointed (and miss-matched) SaifahZon counter story and WRU? was this insane all over the place viewing experience, including the heat levels. There was this "what will they do next?" kind of tension over the production. Not the story (because who was following that?) but the PRODUCTION. At the time, it was welcome, but truly bonkers. What a way to drive narrative tension... pure high heat chaos.

Thai BLs where chemistry failed meet my (relatively low) expectations

My Ride - honestly, if they had just gotten the kiss right this might even have earned a 10/10 from me

Unforgotten Night - ugh

Bite Me - double ugh

Friend Forever - I know I'm the only person who watched this but why could we not have gotten ONE kiss from the leads?

Nitman - studies have since shown us it is entirely not Noh's fault... see Oh My Sunshine Night

Wedding Plan - the leads were fine, but Mame usually fails me in every way except chemistry, so "fine" is not up to her usual standards. Those standards being predominantly "they hawt together" and nothing else. There wasn't even a side dish couple to pick up the slack noodle... so to speak.

Korean BL

For most of 2022 I was consistently getting surprised by Korean BL's chemsitry when it was good but now I've settled into half expecting it yet still being delighted when it happens and is well done.

I do think Semantic Error was a bit of a seed change for them.

The problem is, now we know they can do it, we are starting to get pissed when it's bad or entirely absent.

Taiwanese BL

Taiwan is the opposite of Korea.

I expect good chemistry and almost always always get it. I struggle to think of a time when they've disappointed me (in this arena). Maybe a few? But I tend to cut Taiwan more slack than other countries because they have so few BLs and they are generally so consistent. If they falter at all, at least the side couple will pick up the slack.

Japanese BL

I have no expectations of Japan. Life as a BL fan is a lot easier that way.

Okay venting time

The "conversation" between Seonwoo and Doyeon in the recent episodes prompted me to go back to the Thai original to compare because it frustrated me so much. What was the point of this scene?

To viewers who haven't seen the original, it doesn't give any answers, just brings up new ones. What we learned:

1) Doyeon wants advice from Seonwoo. 2) Doyeon stresses how much she values him and their friendship. 3) Doyeon seems to have complicated feelings about Yugyeom but doesn't actually tell Seonwoo what's bothering her.

Now let's look at the og, although there's several scenes wherein Hwa and Tutor talk about Fighter:

1) Hwa called Tutor because she wants advice from him. 2) Hwa doesn't have to emphasize how much their friendship means to her because the show actually shows us that these two care about each other. 3) Hwa has complicated feelings for Fighter. In fact, they aren't a couple yet but in the talking stage, and Hwa tells Tutor outright that Fighter's never expressed any physical intimacy with her (cue Tutor flashing back to Fighter kissing him). She later suspects that Fighter intends to break up with her and, not knowing what to do, she asks Tutor for advice.

So.

We honestly know nothing about the relationship between Doyeon and Yugyeom. One day they announce they're dating and then their names just keep getting brought up together.

The relationship between Fighter and Hwa, however, is central to the plot. Fighter struggles with his attraction to men and he has daddy issues (don't @ me lol, I'm just trying to simplify this) which both mean he's dating Hwa without actually being into her.

Tutor attempts to tell Hwa that Fighter kissed him during her birthday party several times. In this instance, they get interrupted by Fighter butting in.

Meanwhile, Seonwoo barely speaks in this scene! What he does say, mostly reads to me as guilt over the kiss he shared with Yugyeom during Doyeon's birthday and that no one has fucking acknowledged thus far.

The og scene on the right happens immediately after Fighter kissed Tutor (after Tutor provoked him by saying the reason for him being so indifferent to Hwa is that he's surely trying to hide his attraction to men). The Korean one on the left happens who the fuck knows how much later and it's not even the same type of guilt because, and I repeat, Seonwoo kissed Yugyeom, they kissed each other, they full on made out!

I don't even know anymore what I'm trying to say here, I've lost the plot just as much as this show has, I guess. The script is paper-thin and I've stopped being able to see it as a remake. It feels more like someone took the og script and highlighted which Moments™ they most wanted to keep, without considering the context.

I'm aware btw that I'm only talking about one half of the couples but I didn't watch the SaifahZon Story so I'm just mindlessly watching Jiwon and Jioh go from one Moment to the next without having to constantly compare it to the original. They're entertaining, I guess.

PerthSaint vs ZeeSaint

perthsaint all the way baby! I used to love aepete so much, they were such an iconic ship circa 2018/2019, whereas I was never into tutorfighter, I only watched why r u for saifahzon & thought fighter had a very annoying personality and story imo. I do think tho that behind the scenes zeesaint definitely had a better relationship, but oh well that didn't last long either :')

I was thinking the same thing. How are they going to encompass all that was fightertutor/zeesaint. I just don’t see it being done.

Like I think they're going to def get the plot together, probably not have so many characters and pairings, and make everything nice and cohesive BUT there's no way they're going to capture the heat and passion we go from FighterTutor or SaifahZon.

IDK how it's gonna be tbh, but at least we can count on the story being a bit more easy to follow.

Sept 2023 Wk 2

Ongoing Series - Thai

I Feel You Linger in the Air (Fri grey) ep 5 of 12 - I did think the sketch was done AFTER they’d become lovers. Meanwhile, I do enjoy the creepy slipping through time moments, adds nicely to the tension. I’m sublimely uninterested in all the hets but that's normal for me. Bit of a slow episode, but I'm looking forward to next week. 

Dangerous Romance (Fri YT) ep 5 of 12 - Cohabitation trope activated. Also "lovable grandma" is a new BL archetype I can get behind. Honestly PerthChimon's dynamic is good, it’s fun to watch a Thai BL where the leads are actually both stellar actors. There’s no stilted awkwardness to their dialogue back & forth or other interactions. I also like having MarcPuwin back on my screen. NO DAMN SINGING. Finally a fun twist on the faen fatale. 

Hidden Agenda (Sun YT) ep 10 of 12 - I like that we’re seeing actual realistic consequences of coming out. Not the big parental freak out, but the small nasties of opening up as an everyday queer. This is rare in BL.  

Naughty Babe (Sat YT) ep 3 of 8 - Lap sitting, lots of kissing, one arm counter lift - thank you, boys. Stupid tiny dog (not a euphemism). Is it just me or does Max look extra pretty these days? Anygay, it’s all quite silly and I'm mildly enjoying it.  

Be Mine Super Star (Mon Viki) ep 11 of 12 - I remain enamored of Big Daddy & the Hot Doc but nothing else. 

Venus in the Sky (Tues iQIYI) 3 of 10 eps - Their history and the consequences of the confession to their friendship all seems a little sad & cruel. But also it’s just this pulp, ya know? 

(10 points to the True Geek who gets that reference.)

Only Friends (Sat YT) ep 6 of 10 - I want Mew’s moms’ story as a GL. (Not from this team, of course.) Ah even Sand can be a lying creep, best not to like anyone in this show... frankly, best just not to like this show. And ya know what, I'm pretty sure I really don't.

Could I make something clear? You can’t "steal a lover from someone." That's puerile thinking. That lover wants to go. It’s the lover’s fault (if anyone) not the one who stole that lover, no matter how much an asshole Top is. Sand’s ex is at fault, not Top. And screw Sand for thinking that way. Like his ex wasn't a whole person in their own right capable of making decisions?

My Universe (Sun iQIYI) ep 3-4 Marry Go Round of 24 eps - The premise of this is dumb. The pair is fun. They still kiss great. The actors are good. Crap story. What can you do? Don’t watch it. 5/10 

I need to rewatch Destiny Seeker now. 

Love in Translation (Sat iQIYI) ep 5 of 10 - Omg. Too stupid to live. Why am I still watching this? How many more? Ugh. 

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Why R U? (Korea Wed iQIYI) eps 7-8fin - SaifahZon (no matter what country) are probably the softest enemies to lovers ever put on screen. Yes they are very cute and I like them better than the original. However, no one can out do ZeeSaint for the count down kiss on the rooftop. All in all, I enjoyed the final 2 eps, very cute. I liked this BL a lot but I’d love to know what somebody thought who hadn’t seen the original.

Ultimately, what can I say about Why R U? Korea?

Korea decided to remake, of all possible Thai BLs, Why RU? And that is exactly what we got: a short form, clean & pretty, uneven chemistry, slightly confusing, all the same tropes KBL that kind of cliff-noted the original but with none of the heat or complex relationship dynamics. I just … what world is this? Because it is BOTH bizarro land, and EXACTLY what I expected. How do I rate something like that? In the end I have to go back to simple questions: did I like it, would I rewatch it, and would I recommend it? Yes. Probably. And probably not. What the actual hell reality? 8/10 

You Are Mine (Taiwan Fri Gaga) eps 1-2 of 10 - Office romance, broken-grumpy + innocent-sunshine. (Also cutie devil meets angel bestie hotties.) Gotta say, Taiwan is awfully good at moments of recognition. I sense some whipping boy and obsession incoming, looks good on you, Taiwan. Do I like it? Of course I like it! 

Kisseki: Dear to Me (Taiwan Tues Viki & iQIYI) ep 5 of 13(?) - Taiwan never met a trope it didn’t wanna play with. Teacher student + secret relationship, there’s only one bed but they slept together on the floor anyway... it’s a trope gum ball machine. I'm not mad, a bit confused, but who cares.

My Personal Weatherman AKA Taikan Yoho (Japan Sat Gaga) ep 5 of 8 - Uh-oh baby is sad. Yo is such a drama queen - I respect that in a boy. Also, I love it that W took it as and excuse to play Real Boyfriends. Also leaning v obsessive stalker there Japan. As expected you had to go there. Carry on, you do (and track on your creep app) you.

Minato's Laundromat Season 2 AKA Minato Shouji Coin Laundry Season 2 (Japan Thu Gaga) ep 11 of 12 - Ugh. I kind of enjoyed seeing Minato in pain and having to work for the relationship for a change. But that’s just because I’m so frustrated with his character this season and I want him to SUFFER. Sides are cute tho. I like them better this season. 

It's Airing But...

Crazy Handsome Rich (Sun Gaga) ep 3 of 10 - I just can’t. The sound. DNF 

Bump Up Business AKA Bump Up Project (Korea movie) original cinema release was 9/15 but MDL indicates it's been moved to October so I'll shift my dates. Last status update. Love story between a trainee who is about to debut and a celebrity from the same agency (based on a webtoon). Kpop boy group OnlyOneOf signed on to star. They’ve been auditioning for this since Libido IMHO. You can watch me chronicle their BL MV series in this post. It’s from Idol Romance who will do sad but can do good kisses (Wish You, Nobleman Ryu, Once Again, Kissable Lips, Poongduck 304, Tasty Florida, Tinted With You).

I did a quick analysis of 2 different acting styles based on these 2 boys here.

Boyband, I finally watched the 6 eps that are available. It aired earlier this year and was hard to find. For good reason it turns out. Yes it’s about a Thai boyband so I skipped all the singing bits. I like the actor playing Juju (Brothers). Also hi Art, are you actually ageless? Lots of other familiar faces popped up like Copter, Max, Fluke. It actually started as a solid little story (if not much of a romance). The stuff with the organizers was v boring and there were 2 het sides but the rest of it was palatable. Operative word being was. Something happened around ep 3, like they lost funding as well as distribution and it just... fizzled. No real ending, no character dev, no story resolution, just blank. It’s like it DNF’d itself. 3/10 I don’t know what I just watched and neither does it.

9/26 I Cannot Reach You AKA I Can't Reach You AKA Kimi ni wa Todokanai (Japan ????) - Adapted from the manga, childhood best friends: The cool, smart one who’s good at everything, and his average, dorky friend who struggles. Always by the other’s side, but not together in the way they truly want to be. No matter how hard they try, their hearts cannot reach each other.

9/27 Absolute Zero (Thai iQIYI) - from 2021, Studio Wabi Sabi and New Siwaj finally bring us this “time loop to prevent tragedy” romance. We don’t always get HEAs from them, so I'm on my guard.

9/27 Bon Appetit (Korea iQIYI) - from 2022, 8 eps from GoGo Studio, romance between an office worker who lives off junk food and the man next door who cooks well.

9/? Mr Cinderella 2 (Vietnam YouTube?) - it's Vietnam so your guess is as good as mine.

This one is impossible because Mark needs Kit more than he needs WAyu but Wayu needs Mark more than he needs Thanu.So I'm mkaing the executive decision that Yu gets them both. And that's that. Mark cannot be without Kit.

Masuk= Tir (had he been alive) vs. Jia

Zero hesitation. I love Tir. I adore his chemistry with Tir more than with Jia. I am sure that if Tir had lived that Masuk would have stayed with him and they would have been together in a HAE. So... Yeah, gotta be Tir.

Mon= Team vs. Puth

I'll be honest, I'll typically go canon if the pairing ends happily and isn't too bad in the process. I enjoy the canon pairings. Yeah, I sometime go against them. But Mon and Team turned out to be really cute in the end. They grew on me so much.

Puth= Kaeng vs. Payu

I weep openly that I cannot make this poly. But I do think, in the end, that Puth made the right choice with Kaeng. They knew each other and loved each other and it was adorable in the end. Poor Payu, though. He deserves them both.

Zon= Saifah vs. Tutor

I love Saifah and Zon together. Tutor would be cute but I just don't think Zon could be everything Tutor needs the way Fighter can be. And could anyone be as sweet and soft with Zon as Saifah? No way.

Fiat= Leo vs. Type

Mutual pining always wins. ALWAYS. And these two idiots deserve each other anyway, in their non-negotiated kinky relationship that they kinda of fell into ass over teakettle.

Chon= Tonhon vs. Na

My giant lug of an idiot deserves his tiny Chon. I love them together. I still wish the show hadn't just completely fallen apart in the last like 20 minutes with that pointless tiem skip. Siiiigh.

Third= Khai vs. Two

Honestly? Yeah. I would have loved Third and Two to end up together. They would have been adorable. I'd feel worse for Un than for Khai, tbh. Un deserved Two for all his pining. But Two and Third would have been the softest and cutest little couple!

Pi= Mork vs. Mueang Nan

*ahem* This has been a PSA: Mork will never win unless the contest is 'worst character I've yet seen in a BL' and even then I'd hate to call him a winner. Mueng Nan might be an ass who isn't good at most things and still ignores Pi's needs and chooses to support all of Mork's creeper tendencies... but at least he's not actively abusive.

Duen= Bohn vs. Frong

Shi Lei= Yu Zhen vs. Gang & SiQi

As much as I support Gang and SiQi kidnapping and threatening to seduce Shi Lei, it's entirely in the favor of getting him together with Yu Zhen. After all, they belong together. They love each other so much it hurts.

Hin= Gene vs. Tum

Tum 100%. Gene has his Nubsib, even if their prospects long term seem questionable, but Hin deserves his Tum. Especialyl considering how Tiffy treated Tum during most of the show... yeah. No. Hina dn Tum deserve each other in the best way!

Gene= Nubsib vs. Aey

I agree that Gene and Nubsib might be worrying in terms of truly staying together long term with their communication never seeming to improve... but Aey is so damaged that I have trouble seeing in a healthy relationship of any sort.

Shi Gu= Xia De (the twin) vs. Hao Ting

I'll go canon on this one. Mostly because I don't really remember it? Sorry, this is the cursed History one and I've only partially watched it one a long time ago.

Tian= Phupha vs. Longtae

Yeah, sorry Longtae, but Phupha is absolutely perfect for Tian and there can be no arguments. Love you though, boo!

Kao= Pete vs. Sun (DBK)

Xingsi= Yongjie vs. Lichen & Muren

I feel horrible for not picking Techno because, frankly, he deserves better than he got. But Can and Tin are such an adorable, modern couple and I just love them together.

I'm still enjoying WHY R U? Korean remake, even though it's really different from the Thai original. I think it's super interesting to see what they think the core of the characters and the most important story beats are, on top of reworking specifically-Thai things into what will work for Korean viewers - which was the biggest question mark to me, previously, but they just reworked the Thai freshie hazing, for example.

However, I'm not sure the film angle works for this plot. I know it's more a narrative device and I think it does work for SaifahZon/Ji Oh x Lee Won (granted I haven't seen the SaifahZon Story), even though they've abandoned Zon's writing. But I don't see what it adds to the other couple, TutorFighter already had enough going on with Tutor's jobs, Fighter's dad, and Hwahwa (oh how I miss the cuteness and sass of Hwa! Sorry, Do Yeon, you're lovely in your own right but Hwa's The Moment, I don't make the rules).

I'm still waiting to see if they've truly and completely taken the bite and fire out of Tutor/Seon Woo but it sure looks like it. This couple is pretty far removed from the original, in general - they lack the tension that is so crucial for TutorFighter as well as Fighter's coming to terms with his attraction to Tutor (Zee did so so well). Also I don't see the animosity lol

And I don't know if it's because people in K-dramas are always too well-dressed or what but it feels like we've kinda lost the class difference angle. Yes, we see Seon Woo working several jobs, talking about loans, and see the inside of his fridge, but it's not really hitting, if that makes sense? Tutor and Hwa are close friends despite their differences but there's no hint of that for Seon Woo and Do Yeon, for example. Maybe commentary on class, wealth and social status is just more inherently tied to Thai media?

Oh, and can someone who watches more K-dramas tell me if the amount of dubbing happening in this show is normal and to be expected?? I'm so used to the way Thai series are shot, where even if the sound they recorded sucks they'll rarely ever ADR it, that the amount of smooth studio-quality speaking lines throws me off every god damn time.

I guess my take right now is Interesting but too surface-level (can't believe I'm implying the og had depth lol I may misremember stuff but I do remember some of the more ridiculous beats)
