So im in a fandom that is kind of shat on by like a lot of ppl (idk its considered cringe there is a huge community of antis like there are a lot of youtubers who are against it and all that i have had irl friends cut me off for liking it) and im just like rlly tired like idk its a fucking fandom yk and the thing is its not even like full of the things that antis usually scream at proshippers abt most ppl r just antis bc they think its cringe and then even within the fandom there’s a lot of 1/2

2/2 antis like there r two ppl that i ship but I also think they have a nice friendship so idrc abt those dynamics but every time I come across a friendship fic on ao3 abt them the tags are always like ‘omg ewww shippers dni thats nasty’ and idk im just really tired I dont actually care that much abt what these random ppl say but at the same time all I ever see is negativity and it kind of exhausts me even tho i love the fandom with all my heart

Anon, I feel your pain. I've lost an IRL friend I had for over 6 years to this nonsense. They got infested with TikTok brainrot and started fearing associating with me. Its obvious to me because literally just a few years back they encouraged my problematic ship ideas and often had input of their own. I literally don't recognize the person they've become, but I do recognize their need to be seen as "pure" (they're ex-catholic). Fantis are hypocrites, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised that a lot of them have heavily religious backgrounds 🙃

Anyways, yikes! antis are so single-minded that they cannot fathom a relationship being interpreted in multiple ways. The one comfort I get from those holier-than-thou DNIs on their fics is that they tell me three things:

They're not going to get as many readers.

The readers they do get will be antis, so its likely they will be self-cannibalized by their community with some bullshit callout over some minute detail in their fic lmao

Their imagination is limited as they cannot think that someone can ship/like the dynamics of characters in multiple ways so their fic is gonna be horrible anyway lol

hey do you guys remember when like. brother/brother and sister/sister and brother/sister ships werent just normal, they were really common? parent/child ships werent as widespread as sibling ships but you still saw both of them a lot. like you used to see incest ships all the fucking time.

what my 65yo father has to say about antis:

let me preface this by saying, i literally wish i had what just happened on video to go viral on TikTok. i was shook by this conversation down to my bones; and if you could see my father - a loud old Italian man with dramatic hand gestures - say what he had to say, i think this shit would blow up. but as i was obviously not filming him while we were eating, i will have to relay to you the story with my words.

so i'm sitting eating dinner at the coffee table with my father while watching TV, as Americans often do instead of eating at the dinner table, and since the news was on he started telling me this story that had been recently mentioned on TV once again from maybe ten years ago (it was in 2014, you can read about it here) where these two 12-year-old girls killed one of their friends as a sacrifice to the Slender Man. yeah, real thing. fucked up.

and so my father told me about how they interviewed one of the killer's mothers, and when questioned about where her daughter's motive could've come from, she said something along the lines of: you know, when i was a kid, i was into Stephen King and horror - and so when my kid was into that kind of stuff, i didn’t think it was a big deal.

so, of course, my response was "yeah, being into that stuff isn’t a big deal at all - it's normal - but being a sociopath and murdering someone is not normal; it's fucked up. but there's nothing wrong with being into horror stories - they're just stories meant to entertain - it doesn't make you a murderer to enjoy Halloween - but it would if you put on a Michael Myers mask and went out and stabbed people." and, of course, like any sane person, my father agreed with me.

then, continuing this line of conversation, i started talking about the concept of how "fiction isn’t reality," and how a frightening amount of people don't understand that; and i literally started telling him about antis - people on the internet who attack and harass others over "problematic" or "inappropriate" fictional interests.

i used well-known pop culture examples like: if you're into Game of Thrones and like Jaime and Cersei together or wanted Jon and Daenerys to end up together (i didn't think he would process the term "shipping," but clearly by the end of this conversation i think i was wrong), that people (antis) will say things like "you should die," and that you "support inc*st in real life," and that "you're disgusting."

i also used the examples of "toxic relationships" in pop culture, like the Joker and Harley Quinn, or Kylo Ren and Rey, and how if you’re into those kinds of fictional relationships that people (antis) will say that you "support toxic relationships," and that you are "glorifying abuse," and that it all "must be what you really want and believe is right or good."

and my fucking 65-year-old father literally goes: "I don’t understand. It’s a TV show. Don't they know it’s fake?"

queue my jaw dropping to the fucking ground because i'm like. YES. THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT PRO-SHIPPERS ARE TRYING TO SAY AND THESE PEOPLE DON'T GET IT.

he was flabbergasted, my pals. the shock in his eyes was incredible to behold.

and, oh boy, that isn't even the best part, guys.

my father then says, "Don’t tell me it’s like that with anime too?"

also, for those who don't know what the proship stance is, or those who have been misinformed, here is the definition of proship and an explanation of what being proship means:

proship means you pro/for shipping, the same way someone who is pro abortion is pro/for abortion, "pro" is not short problematic like some will try to say it

this is a belief that people should not be shamed or harrassed for the ship dynamics they like or engage in with fictional characters, even if those dynamics are ones you find disgusting, squicky, or triggering. blocking, blacklisting, and or just ignoring tags and users is encouraged

it does not mean that you like every ship dynamics, or even the people who ship those dynamics, it just means you acknowledge the fact that while fiction affects reality, it does not do so on a 1 to 1 ratio

like how watching a horror movie may upset you or may make you excited, it is not going to make you a murder, or even make you want to murder people. and in the very rare case that someone does decide to commit a murder after being inspired by a horror movie, the blame still lies fully on them because they still made the choice the murder, the movie may have caused inspiration but it did not force them to act on those inspirations. giving any blame to the movie in this case is saying that people are not responsible for their actions, that emotions and feelings are understandable excuses, removes accountability from and give justification to abusers, and allows other kinds of abusers to use similar means of defense such as "well, she was wearing a short skirt and i couldn't help myself!"

and for an example specifically about not liking ships, i do not like ships featuring any child aged characters, including child x child/teen/adult, loli, shota, etcetera, but i do not harrass, shame, and or accuse these people of being pedophiles or anything. i block people who ship these ships and block any related tags to avoid seeing this kind of dynamic but that's it. i acknowledge that people who like seeing murder in media most often have no desire to see murder in real life and that this same logic applies to other crimes depicted in fiction, such as incest, domestic abuse, and yes, even pedophilia

being proship also doesn't mean shutting down discussions around media, it just means not censoring that media so that those discussions can take place. to give an example, i find racist and homophobic stories, movies, etcetera disgusting but i do not want them censored, because if we censor them we remove our means to analyze, debate, and discuss these stories/etcetera and the people who make them

take the phenomenon around the popularity of Fifty Shades of Gray where suddenly there was a lot of new easily accessible information on how those scenes were wrong, but here's how to do kink properly and safely. if we had censored Fifty Shades of Gray out of fear people would have began sexually abusing each other, we never would have gotten all the wonderful education and discussions that we did

also, proship refers solely to the belief, not the dynamics of certain ships often associated with proshipper. either you are proship, a proshipper, or you beliving in proshipping, but you cannot ship a "proship" nor is there such thing a "proship ship" since proship is a belief, not a dynamic
