i feel like i watch the show the same way you do. i pick up on the ~vibes~ and see how buddie COULD work if they went that route, but i don’t think they ever will and i also see how if they did it would come completely out of left field to a casual viewer
Yep, this is exactly it. I was absolutely 100% in the same boat as the bloggers coming up with ways in which every Buck and Eddie story line can bring us to canon!Buddie back when I first joined fandom (in time for season four) right up through 6x01, but after that...sometime between Eddie not going to Buck to talk about Chris's quest for independence (despite CONFIRMING that if Chris would confide in ANYONE it would be Buck) and Buck actually being a successful sperm donor after what you'd think would have been multiple "signs" from the universe that he shouldn't go through with it...my brain like, rewired itself where I just...stopped looking at everything as a shipper. And listen, there's nothing wrong with only watching a show for a ship - I have admitted many times that the Buckley-Diaz fam is what interests me most because of Chris's presence - but realizing that this show and this ship doesn't dictate my happiness or my reason for existing on tumblr allowed me to step back and take the content for what it is in the moment instead of trying to figure out what secret meaning there could be behind it *if* (I think there are some folks who definitely forget we're speaking in hypotheticals!) the show runners are contemplating making the transition from friends to romantic lovers. Everything we've seen from Buddie so far in s6 is an extension/continuation of something from a previous season, save for Eddie showing legit fear when Buck was dangling from the wire, but...even in his delirious state post-shooting he was worried about Buck, right? The concern was elevated a notch to match the circumstance. (& then Oliver had to come out and be like "Please do not read into it right now. It's how a best friend should react.") The biggest reason why it felt/feels "different" to people is because we just went through well over a full season of both characters in relationships and the show couldn't throw either of them into ANOTHER ONE right away, so we were bound to get Buddie/Buckley-Diaz content while living the single life to mirror s3. The funny thing is, though (it's one more thing nobody wants to point out)...Buddie content outside of work was nonexistent in 6A because of "different dynamics" WHILE THERE WERE NO LOVE INTERESTS. Once 6B came around and Eddie's dating arc was about to start? Once Buck was about to meet Natalia for the first time? Oh. Look who can be friends again. How, exactly, is that different from what we witnessed in s4 and s5? Uh huh. That's what I thought. :)

I'm not sure if you know this answer but you seem to be the Bubbie Bible so it's a shot lol. Are the same writers and show runners still in place from S2 and on. I have to admit my favorite seasons were 2 and 3.. 5 was my least favorite and it really was just over all critiques. Like yes we got some good Buddie content but there was just also so much left out.
I really wanted to see the St. Louis conversation. The Chim Buck Conversation. The Eddie reaction to the BT break up.
I was told more then I was shown and I'm curious if it's just because we know the characters so much now we are supposed to interpret it? I think I'm just prepping myself for S6 expectations. Thanks for any insight!!
Hi dear Nonnie! Thank you for the lovely title, I kinda love it, though I have no idea whether I actually get to claim it. I will do my best for you, though! *hugs*
So the biggest change is that in s5, Tim Minear stepped away from being the main show runner for 911, he did this to more closely supervise 911 LS, but it's not like he's out of the picture completely. Instead of him, Kristen Reidel has stepped in to be the main show runner (though presumably she still answers to Tim if need be). She has been with the show since s1, she has been co-executive producer since back then and a full executive producer since s3. She has also written more than ten eps herself (the first one again going back to s1. She also wrote 205, which is when the team gives the verbal middle finger to what is clearly a reference to the homophobic Westboro Baptist "church", as well as 301, which gave us Eddie having Buck's key as canon, Buddie hugging, plus generally kick started the beloved tsunami arc. Maybe most importantly, she wrote 414, with the will reveal. Most recently, she wrote 503, which gave us Eddie breaking up with Ana, but first telling Buck about it, clearly showing Buck was the one who got Eddie to do it, as well as 517 and 518, which gave us Buck in the Diaz home, just being a natural part of whatever Eddie's going through). Lastly, she also directed eps 317 and 518.
I kinda went into details, because I do believe all of this means Kristen should have a pretty good grasp on what 911 wants to be, and what about it works. I do think she was thrown into rough circumstances, where she still had to navigate around covid issues (like Michael's actor being let go of because he refused to get vaccinated) in addition to having to build a season where a relatively big number of the actors for the show's loved characters weren't available to film (Maddie, Chim, Albert). I heard this is why Taylor's background in 507 and 509 was thrown in there, basically as filler since they were missing a lot of their cast. Though I still think that's a highly questionable decision (I would have much preferred it if they had used the extra time to delve into one of the more established characters), it did serve to better explain why Buck was willing to put up with a lot in that r/s. It showed him not exactly happy with some of Taylor's investigative ways in 507, but swallowing that down, and it also showed his fear of being abandoned dictating some of his actions in 509, plus let's not forget he's a naturally protective guy. Taylor in that ep def stirred that in him.
And I get it, I feel a bit cheated out of certain aspects as well. 911 might revisit them in the future, as it has done with some other issues in the past. I hope so. For example, we could still have a convo in s6 where Taylor is brought up and we get to see Eddie's glorious facial reactions, or hear what he has/had to say about the break up. All I'm saying is, given the obstacles in Kristen's way, then some of the shortcomings of s5 might be down to that. IDK what they'll do for s6, whether Tim will be back or what, but even if it is still Kristen at the helm, that doesn't necessarily mean you'll dislike s6. Not to mention, s5 def did deliver some things that fandom has wanted to see for a really long time, and even put Buck in the room! ;) I'm just saying, have heart. However you felt about s5 is legit, but s6 can still be a season you'll really love...
Hope this helps, Nonnie! Have a great day! xoxox

I’m so curious as to how much of Buck’s storyline is actually deliberate.
Because there are a lot of characters on tv who have fairly consistent characterisation but as the seasons progress you can tell a lot of it sort of falls to the actors choosing to act/react certain ways because they remember their characters’ pasts even if the writers/show runners seem to forget.
And I think 911 as a show, considering it’s been on for 4 seasons now, are pretty good at maintaining the 118’s characterisation. Like, look you can definitely argue about screen time or certain storylines getting swept under the rug but overall they do a good job. And I think they’re quite good at doing subtle nods/foreshadowing too. For example Bobby and Athena’s fight was hinted to quite consistently throughout the season but you don’t necessarily see it until they start arguing (even though I know a lot of people are disappointed it was resolved so quickly)
But something about Buck’s storyline just fits together so well????? And it has done literally since the first episode. Every single thing that happens to him connects in with his previous storyline and development. I’m still in awe of how Buck Begins so succinctly explained why he is the way he is and while I don’t necessarily think the writers knew his backstory from the beginning, I do think they at the very least looked at Buck’s development and came up with something that worked for his narrative (and did so extremely successfully imo)
And ofc oliver is an excellent actor and clearly knows his character well but something about the consistency of Buck’s arc really does make me wonder just how much is always planned and how much is extrapolation on our part. Bc y’know fandom thrives on meta and analysis and connecting the dots, but also none of Buck’s actions/reactions/plots ever really feel like we’re just reading too much into it?
And to give a kind of contrasting example. On the one hand I could believe Ryan (or at least the writers) knew about the will storyline throughout the season bc of all of Eddie’s concerned looks/reactions when buck says something self-deprecating bc y’know those lines existed in the script and the camera chose to focus on Eddie’s reaction. But at the same time I could just as easily believe Ryan was just reacting how he thought Eddie would and maybe wasn’t aware of the will until the very end (either way I’m screaming bc gOD lmao). Likewise, I definitely don’t think he knew in s3 and yet all their interactions post-Eddie Begins still work really well with the new context of 4x14. So that to me would be an example of something you see on shows a lot where, something isn’t necessarily planned but it works anyway bc of the combo of writer/director/actor/character dynamics, y’know?
Whereas everything about Buck just feel so On Purpose that it leaves me feeling so confused agshskd like is some of this really just a happy coincidence or do they actually have this whole thing mapped out???? And if it is all planned like holy shit how??????? And how are they gonna continue it bc I’m honestly in fucking awe of how it’s been developed so far??????
Idk I don’t have a point to this post I just can’t stop thinking about this lmao @ tim minear tell me what’s up?!??!

Can you give new people joining the fandom a rundown on Max Gao? With his latest 9-1-1 article circulating a lot, I think it's time to clear some misconceptions, and you're the one I trust the most when it comes to compiling information as well as giving neutral/levelheaded takes.
*rubs temples* Are they mad at MG again? I didn't even realize it was him who put out the TVGuide article when I answered my nonnie who left me the quote (shoulda guessed, though, right?) Ah, MG. A twenty-something working his way up the ranks of journalism. Uses his twitter as a vessel for his written material while ALSO reacting to episodes as a fan would. People do not like that because "he should keep the two separate". Hate to break it to 'em, but he is not the only 9-1-1 journo to leave their personal opinions where all can see. But I don't see those folks getting called out NEARLY as much. They also don't like that he "says things to get a reaction". Uh. Is that not the point of working in the media??? To say things that will boost your twitter engagement or get more eyes on an article??? Did OG not do something similar when they put "Buck! Where the hell are you going?!" in the 6x04 promo only for it to amount to nothing??? Because they knew the most vocal people in the fan base would sit up and take note??? Complaining about him wanting a reaction is still A FORM OF REACTING. He doesn't care what you're saying!! Just that you actually bother to pay attention at all!! He most notably came under fire for a TVGuide interview with Tim & Kristen in March '22 in which Kristen said she sees Buck and Eddie as a "great friendship." They're mad at MG for getting that on record because they want to live in La La Land where the show runners have been championing for Buddie since s2 or s3 (depending on who is giving their opinion). She also said she doesn't think there is a "right or wrong" way to interpret Buddie: "But I think the struggle with the Buck and Eddie relationship is, we write a thing and we have an idea in our head of what the scene means and what those lines mean and an intention behind it, and then it goes out into the world," Reidel added. "People may receive it in a way that we had not expected or that we had not planned on, and I'm not gonna tell people that they're watching the show wrong because people see what they see." Meanwhile, this was Kristen when talking to Variety for an article that dropped the very same day: "...I think sometimes they interpret things as signs or signals that we did not intend for them to be.” + Reidel admits there have “been a couple of times where we made a little joke” about Buck and Eddie’s close friendship, “but that’s been the extent of it.” “With regard to the queer-baiting, I don’t actually know what to say on it because with Buck and Eddie, they have great chemistry and some people want to see them together. And it kind of seems like, if they’re in scenes together, we’re queer-baiting, if they’re not in scenes together, we’re queer-baiting. I am not really sure what to do there. But I will say it’s never our intention to queer-bait. But I can’t say, ‘You’re watching it wrong!'” [*insert The Office "They're the same picture." meme] TL;DR They've been picking on MG ever since they found out he was a teenager writing about their fave show (19 at the time of the fandom really starting to form an opinion about him) for...behaving like a teenage fan (aka someone we'd see on tumblr) while STILL having the balls to ask the uncomfortable questions or point out flaws that "ruin the fun". (And getting paid for it. That's the kicker.)
