Novel Prep Tag Game: Trials of Athenelle

First Look

1.) Describe your novel in 1-2 sentences:

The Trials will decide your future.

Keep your friends close, and your enemies far far away

2.) How long do you plan for the novel to be?

Multiple books – so many ideas!

3.) What’s your novel’s aesthetic?

Red rocks, oceans, training arenas, libraries, magic. Quite a bit

4.) What other stories have inspired your novel?

Um kinda my life (minus the magic unfortunately) HP, Throne of Glass

5.) 3 images that get the feel of my novel:

Main Characters

6.) Who is your protagonist?

Rynna, but we get multiple POV throughout the story/series

7.) Who is their closest ally?

Jessalynn. Rynna’s cousin and bestie for life, and the afterlife too. They plan to be ghosts together and haunt the shit out of their family palace.

8.) Who is their enemy?

This changes a bit as the story progresses, but Rynna is definitely one of her own worst enimies

9.) What do they want more than anything?

Rynna wants a family that accepts her. (her mom and Jessa are the exception) and to make her own way, break free of family expectations, travel.

10.) Why can’t they have it?

She’s different from the rest of the Royal family in how she looks, and not everyone is nice. She needs to pass the right Trials to have the life she wants.

11.) What do they wrongly believe about themselves?

That people don’t like her. Her RBF is hard to get past, but most people (other than her cousins) like her once she lets them in

12.) Draw your protagonist!

Can’t draw. But I used this for my character intro

13.) What is the worst thing that could happen to your protag?

Failing her Trial for the House of Sword and Shield. Having to do what her family wants of her

14.) What secret will be revealed that changes the course of the story?

Big secrets come out a bit later in the story

15.) Do you know how it ends?

I have a few varying ideas. Haven’t decided yet

16.) What is the theme?

Friendship, found family, accepting oneself’

17.) What is a recurring symbol?

Not sure I have any… yet

18.) Where is the story set?

Most of the story is on Verarmde, an island that was created for the races to live together peacefully. This mostly works

19.) Do you have images and scenes in mind already?

So so many

20.) What excited you about this story?

Who doesn’t want to rewrite their own story? And add some magic to it?

21.) What is your usual writing method?

I started with a lot of prompts actually. Came up with some fun scenes, and then had to figure out how to get it all to work. Starting an outline, but I’m more of a pantser.

Dropping my head, I started for the door, unsure if I was cowering or if I was just staggered by what I’d unwittingly forced my way into. I felt like a fool. Naïve and reckless. Because I’d come seeking something I hadn’t understood.

And I’d just stumbled into the awareness that their lives were pieced together precariously.

Fragilely.

A tender, loving, imperfect balance.

It would only take one misstep to send everything toppling over.

I reached for the latch when I felt the flurry of intensity rise up behind me, the tension suffocating, the movement stealing the air from the room.

I spun around, my back plastered to the door as he approached.

Coming closer and closer.

He wasn’t touching me.

But he might as well have been.

He rested a hand on the door above my head, his face dipping toward mine, his words a breathy grunt at my ear. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing to me, Rynna?”

Lust and confusion trembled through my bones, this man pushing me away and then drawing me closer.

I thought maybe neither of us could ignore it.

The overpowering attraction.

Because the fever in my veins ignited a fire in my belly.

Torrid.

Blistering.

No words would form on my tongue.

“Tell me, Rynna. What do you want with us?” he murmured, low and rough. “Because I don’t have anything to offer you, and I won’t let you take anything else from us.”

I attempted to process what he said, what he meant.

But I couldn’t focus. Couldn’t see. Could feel nothing but the heat radiating between us.

Wave after blinding wave.

I gasped a breath, and he inched closer, a single knee wedging between my legs. He set both hands on the door above my head.

Caging me in.

A desperate sound rumbled through the strength of his chest.

A hand was suddenly on my jaw, thumb under my chin, tipping my face up to meet the ferocity in his gaze.

Rage and restraint and desire. I couldn’t decipher what was happening. The push and the pull. The hatred and the need.

I could barely speak. “I . . . I thought maybe you could use a friend.”
