I remember in the early days of Rwby it was mostly dudes who would tell me Yang was their favorite character (we know why) and then somewhere around v4 there was a cultural reset with her depression concept art that had wlw lining up in mass (we know why)

Word of advice from a guy who gets shit on by people hating his comfort medias. People are assholes sometimes for no reason, they hate art on a surface level because they want something to hate. Your favorite medias aren't bad, in my opinion they're really cool (people who can get into rwby are like superheros to me same with sonic but I'm slowly getting into that) don't listen to the haters and keep loving what you love!
ty fr 😭🙏 i am a consistent enjoyer of what people often consider "bad" media, but i never understand why its bad. it simply doesnt register

Okay, I know some people might be mad at me, but I stand by this. Volumes seven and eight were the most horrible volumes to me. Many you would say because of Ironwood and how the heroes betrayed him. And I would say, “Yes. That is absolutely the reason.” However, that is not the only reason I hate those volumes, especially with nine.
Ren and Oscar:
Ren and Oscar were the MVP s of volumes seven and eight. In volume seven, Ren was concerned with lying to James and was more worried about the people's safety. He became the most emotional in the group and started acting somewhat critical to the point he lashed out at Nora, Yang, and Jaune. This causes Nora to become somewhat distant from him and Jaune to be a little disappointed, especially after mentioning he cheated Beacon. However, after a little talk with Jaune and yelling at Harriet, Ren semblance evolves to where he can read emotions.
Oscar, who was willing to trust James when Ruby, for reasons, didn’t. Who openly told James the truth about Salem, then gets shot for it. Then gets found by his friends and immediately gets taken by Salem’s forces. He then persuades Hazel to betray Salem and gets Emerald on the side of good.
Here’s the problem, Ren didn’t do anything. Like, he didn’t try to fill James in on anything. He stood by his friends and still carried out the lie. And then his evolution really was unnecessary and wasn’t well-earned. And many of you might say, “But he earned it by standing up to Harriet. And it helped them in some way.” Okay, but hears the thing. First off, Harriet was going to hurt Ren if Winter didn’t stop her. And second, his semblance wasn’t even that useful in finding Oscar.
Now Oscar, he just overstayed his welcome. He somehow persuaded Hazel to betray Salem… Even though he is the reincarnation of the man he hates. He gave away the information to Hazel, who was ordered to collect that intel by Salem, which Hazel got mad at Oscar about afterward. But what did he offer Hazel to make him switch sides, considering Ozpin still can’t kill her? Why offer the last question to him? He already knows everything.
And then Emerald, whom he met once and tried to kill Ruby in Heaven, Oscar managed to get her to join the hero side. Why? Why would the characters who not only met Emerald but were betrayed by her and Cinder be willing to trust her? Because Oscar says so? And what makes it worse is Ren agrees to it first because of his evolution. The reason it doesn’t make sense to me is because it’s coming from the wrong characters. Which brings me to my next problem.
Jaune and Nora:
Mainly, Jaune was my issue. However, we will talk about Nora first. Mainly on how the writers gave her the Jaune treatment. Nora was more concerned for the people of Mantle, while Ren was concerned for the entire world. This is due to Nora’s backstory where she was poor, parentless, and alone on the streets. Nora knew exactly how the people were feeling. So you would think out all the characters, she would most likely side with Robyn. Maybe even so far as to tell her what’s going on. But then it was Yang and Blake. Even though Yang was completely against lying to Ironwood and was calling Ruby out on it. (But hey, bumblebee matters.) Then what made Nora's coming out party even more hollow is she leaves Mantle to her teammates, while she goes back to Atlas with the majority of team RWBY, only to be knocked unconscious for half of volume eight. All while thinking about only Ren.
Jaune got it the worst though. Not just with the fact that he had to kill Penny even though he trained with his semblance and probably the most innocent and cool headed person on the group. But as I said before, a lot of Ren and Oscar's actions were pointless - no, didn't make sense because they fit Jaune’s character more.
Look, I said this before, but Jaune has no reasons to trust James. Not only because of Leon’s betrayal but Ozpin whose secrets came to light. Jaune had his trust broken two times. By Headmasters, no less. And you may say, “Ironwood gave Jaune and his friends their licensees early. And a place to stay.” True enough, however, Jaune knows Salem exists. James is trying to keep her a secret until Amity Arena is ready for launch. Who's to say he’s not giving them their licenses and a place to stay to keep an eye on them? (However, that’s not true. Considering Ironwood as we have seen has done nothing wrong to them.) That’s something for Jaune to consider. And even though he could feel sorry for the citizens of Mantle, that doesn’t mean he would fully trust Robyn either, due to her methods causing more harm than good. (The only reason anyone would side with Robyn is that she is a better choice than Jacque. Plus, why do we just see Yang argue about this? Why would Jaune agree to something that he almost hurt Oscar for?)
Basically, Jaune should have been the middle man from the start of volume seven, and in volume eight he brings everyone together. In volume seven, we could’ve had Jaune struggling due to having to help Atlas and Mantle as a huntsman while training to extend his aura, keeping his team together, and watching out for Tyrian, who said he had an interest in him (still don't know why.), and Salem. Jaune would’ve had a hard time, especially because his friends would have been making things worse, and he had to follow up on their actions. (More importantly, Jaune might as well learn to stand on his own two feet as huntsman and a leader. Otherwise, how is he important to the story?)
Then in volume eight, when Ren lashed out at him, Jaune would have had more to prove. Imagen Jaune negotiating with Winter on letting them go in to save Oscar. Offering the relic as leverage so they can find Penny, who mind you they were looking for. Rushing in, extending his aura, and going on his own to find Oscar while relying on his friends to do their part. Then having to fight and reason with Hazel to help him. Even to promise Hazel a future where no more people need to die due to Salem’s and Ozpin’s war, considering Jaune lost Pyrrha. Even maybe seeing Hazel ask Jaune to bring Emerald with him. Jaune learning to trust Emerald, despite everything she’s done because he may need her or sees her redeeming qualities. All this, though unintentionally, is to prove Ren wrong. That he’s capable of doing great things and making him a supposedly better leader than Ironwood. He’s based on Jeanne D'Arc, right? Who was the biggest turnaround in the war for France in 1429. A leader and influencer who managed to convince her allies to join her side. Despite being a woman and a peasant with no proof that angels told her to help in the war.
(Okay, look, many of you might say, “Jaune is not a good fighter” which I agree… but isn't a fight more like a debate using strength and knowledge. And we have seen Jaune fight just not with human opponents.Him fighting Hazel may determine how far he has come from when we met him. Also Jaune’s and Hazel's character a true opposite
Plus the whole point of Hazel’s character is him being a broken man with nothing left to lose. A man who lost all faith in humanity and the hunting world ever since his sister and possibly his whole family were slain by it. His faith slipped the moment he met Salem and found out she was immortal and cannot be killed, making his sister's untimely death even more worth less. However, Jaune is the opposite.
Jaune lost Pyrrha. He lost the very first friend and could've been lover to the hunting world. He was betrayed by others who he thought were  his allies. To make matters worse he too learns of Salem’s immortality. Yes, he was angered by this information. Furious. Almost enough that he would have done the same things Hazel was doing out of spite. But he didn't. He still fights the good fights.
Hazel is man who feels no pain. Sees an indifference between Ozpin and Oscar. Mainly because unlike Jaune he never hanged out with Oscar. So Jaune who was already worried for Oscar, especially after he got kidnapped would be the one to oppose and object Hazel for his actions. Believing that his actions will not only not bring his sister back… but mainly dishonor her. I'm just saying these two should have fought.)
But that’s it for volumes seven and eight. Look, I don't hate Ren and Oscar. However, as some of you complain about Jaune getting too much screen time or being a self insert but when Oscar does the same thing, no one talks about it and are ready to defend other characters and not call out their levels of screen time. Or how they don't fit into the situation. There were plenty of better things Jaune and Nora could have done beside kill or nap for the volumes. Instead, they’re pushed to the side until the writers need an escape goat to advance the plot.
(Also if you are wondering why I am just talking about team JNRO then I am going to be straight forward with you. TEAM JNRO CARRIED THE WHOLE ATLAS VOLUME. And mean main character wise..They save team RWBY. They were the main one probably keeping the people of Mantle and Atlas alive. Jaune killed Penny to save Winter. Basically unlike team RWBY, team JNRO were doing their FUCKING jobs. Hate me if you want to.)

credit to the original poster
Tumblr media
so yeah as a RWBY and DC fan, I think based on all the hate Jaune is getting recently (my dude needs a break CRWBY) that Jessica is ours now.
That's it, we're just taking yet another smoll bean child to our collection, let's hope they don't go missing as often as Oscar
no, but really like, it's ours now, ya'll gonna vote and stuff
(this is a joke, please we can't have another dark-haired character for Yang to hit on)

10 Fandoms, 10 Characters, 10 tags
Basic rules: choose 10 fandoms that you are part of/support, and choose a favorite character from each of those. Then, tag ten folks!
Tagged by: @miqojak Ty for the tag!!! Sorry it took a hot minute.
Tagging: Uhhhhh, @terminuspride, @fair-fae, @alannah-corvaine, @voidsentprinces, @healerstail, @ahollowgrave, @alicelufenia, @starrysnowdrop, @briar-ffxiv, @driftward
Now to the list! In no real particular order cause I really just drift from thing to thing.
Penny Polendina (RWBY)
I love my quirky little robot girl. She's the absolute best, a brilliant fighter and very emotionally intelligent. She is such a cheerful ideal, someone who tries to see the best in people. She knows when they've gone too far and isn't afraid to stand up for what she wants! Which is the whole core of her little arc. Being a weapon given a soul and all. It is a beautiful story of a little girl who cares so much and wishes to be able to just... be that cheerful little girl without the weight of the world. Its just so sweet.
Honorable mentions: Ruby, Weiss, Blake, Yang, Oscar, Neo
Tumblr media
2. Kafka (Star Rail)
In all honesty she's the reason I'm even playing Star Rail. She is such a mysterious character, with a voice to die for. Yes, Hoyoverse characters tend to be rather shallow (that's a gacha game for ya), but Kafka just hits everything I love in a character. Her character short when she was fully released is... *chef's kiss* just amazing. I will admit, every time she does her ult in game I join her in saying "Boom." ^_^;
Honorable Mentions: March 7th, Stelle (Trailblazer F), Seele, Bronya, Jingliu
Tumblr media
3. Lyse (FFXIV)
Shocker, the leading lady of Stormblood is still my favorite? Honestly, all three of the ladies from Stormblood are the trifecta of favorites. (Lyse, Fordola and Yotsuyu) The various storylines that cause them to interact is such a delight. I wasn't too bothered by the whole "Yda was my sister" thing, cause well, Yda was barely in the game post ARR... And like, it was always Yda and Papalymo. Never just one or the other. So when Lyse got the chance to shine and actually take center stage, I was smitten. She's tough, gentle, sassy, collected, brilliant, a bit silly, and more. Such a well written character. I'm still upset she left the scions tbh. Could've added a little hair color diversity by a little bit. :P
Honorable mentions: Aymeric, Hilda, Erenville, Zero, Y'shtola, Thancred, Ryne, Gaia, Minfillia
Tumblr media
4. Gideon Nav (The Locked Tomb)
Ok, seriously, this series grabbed me by the throat and would not let me go. Gideon is such a lovely first viewpoint (and I adore all the viewpoint characters). She takes no shit, talks a lotta shit, and can fight a whole heck more shit. The way she interacts with Harrow at first, then the other Necromancers and their Cavaliers is such a delight. Sure you hate Harrowhark so much Gideon, why are you obeying her command to not speak a single word to literally anyone else, hmmmmmmmmmmm?????? Also the gay panic that Gideon seems to have on the regular is just. Great. I don't want to speak too much more on Gideon, cause this series is just great and you should read it.
Honorable mentions: Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Nona, Camilla Hect, Ianthe Tridentarius, Coronabeth Tridentarius.
Tumblr media
5. Raiden Ei (Genshin Impact)
Last time it was Eula, now it is Raiden Ei. It is always a toss up between them, if I'm being honest. Ei is just... such a sad puppy? XD Its the best way to describe her. So trapped in her own past and trying to do what would best preserve her sister's memory... She's just SAD guys. Yeah, she may not be the best governing force for her nation, and she indirectly killed a lotta people with her retreating away and leaving a puppet behind, but we the Traveler showed up and fixed things! Also she gets two amazing boss fights, I honestly wish I could do the story one again but I ain't working through Mondstat and Liyue again. >.>;
Honorable mentions: Eula, Alhaithem, Deya, Kamisato Ayaka, Zhongli, Nahida, Navia, the Wanderer, Wriothsley
Tumblr media
6. Karlach (Baldur's Gate 3)
KARLACH IS THE BEST AND SHE IS SO SWEET AND LOVELY AND SHOULD NOT HAVE TO GO BACK TO HELL OR DIE OR [redacted]. She is such a lovely goofball that even shows platonic love if you don't romance her and I really think that is great! Her arc tying into Gortash was delightful, bringing her much more into the story instead of just a bystander like a couple of them. (Like out of all the origin companions Astarion barely has any connection to any of the major players in the story, he's pretty self contained tbh.) Her sweetness, the way she says she's gonna eat dirt if you leave her camp, and her cheerful demeanor are just.... Amazing. I'm really running out of words for Karlach cause she is my favorite. I'm gonna have to start BG3 up again and actually play my romance run of her soon.
Honorable mentions: Shadowheart, Wyll, Astarion, Lae'zel, Dammon, Orin, Jaheira, Minthara, Isobel, Aylin
Tumblr media
7. The Doctor (Doctor Who)
Ok, a bit of a cop out since, you know, they are the star of the show. BUT COME ON. The Doctor in their various iterations have been so enjoyable. My personal favorite is Tennet's 10, but Capaldi's 12 is a strong second. Its just a good show to binge at times. There are a lottta good episodes, a few really bad ones, but overall its a good time. The scene at the end of the special where they rescue Gallifrey is still one of my favorite scenes in the whole franchise. And hell, the Archeologist is based (loosely) on them, so how can I not include them?
Honorable mentions: DONNA NOBLE, Rose Tyler, Clara Oswald, Bill Potts, Me, Strax
Tumblr media
8. Xion (Kingdom Hearts)
Have I mentioned I love tragic characters? Xion is literally the definition of tragedy, with all the problems with her just existing lol. Her presence in 358/2 Days really made the game for me. Roxas was kinda bland and having someone that was similar in age (like Sora, Riku and Kairi were) to interact with made it all that much better. AND SHE GETS THE HAPPY ENDING. Eventually. Boy is it a long road, but that's Kingdom Hearts for ya.
Honorable Mentions: Kairi, Namine, Riku, Sora, Aqua, Terra, Master Xehanort, Isa, Lea
Tumblr media
8. Lucina (Fire Emblem)
I really wanna pick someone else in all honesty, but Fire Emblem has a worse problem than Hoyoverse games in their bit characters. :/ Lucina is a strong character that really delighted me when I played Awakening. She's such a surprise that it really helps make that Fire Emblem my favorite. She's got a good supporting cast too, with Robin and her dad Chrom, but Awakening was really her game. Chrom was kinda there just to be her dad lol
Honorable mentions: Robin, Chrom, Ike, Mist, Soren, Sumia, Erika, Marisa, Lyon, Elincia
Tumblr media
9. Trevor Belmont (Castlevania)
Full disclosure, I have not played his game, in fact the only two castlevania's I have played both feature non Belmont's as the lead players (Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclasia). But the way Trevor is in the show, OH BOY. He is rough, he is blunt, he is smart, he is SOOOO dumb, he is loyal, he is a fighter, he never gives up, HE IS JUST GREAT. He's also one of my biggest Bi panics when he shows how much of a badass he is in episode, I think, 4 or 5 or later? Its been a hot minute since I watched that series. When he first uses the flail weapon that I forget the name of.
Honorable mentions: Shanoa, Jonathan Morris, Charlotte Aulin, Sypha Belnades, Alucard, Dracula
Tumblr media
10. Aigis (Persona)
Aigis is a super cutie and I love her interactions with the female protagonist. I really wish P3 wasn't such a long game and Aigis actually showed up a little earlier. She's just a doll! I do need to try and find a copy (or emulate) FES to play the storyline with her as the lead singer. Its just so rough to get thru P3 I just lose motivation. T.T I've made it to the vacation part with the female lead, like, three times and no further cause my motivation tanks. WHICH IS WEIRD CAUSE THAT'S WHEN YOU MEET AIGIS. Its just too long for me I guess. XD
Honorable mentions: Teddie, Female lead P3, Male lead P4, Yukari Takeba, Mitsuru Kirijo, Akihiko Sanada, Fuuka Yamagishi, Shinji Aragaki, Junpei Iori, Chidori Yoshino, Elizabeth, Theodore
Tumblr media
Not gonna lie, kinda struggled to find a full 10 franchises to pull a character from. My mind just goes blank when asked my favorite character from X place. Names escape me and everything. XD But as you can see, I love robot girls, strong girls, mysterious girls, tragic girls, a fail man, and traveling weirdo.

Some Thematic Lore
Tumblr media
So, here comes this volume's climax. It is probable the next 2 episodes are going to be packed with revelations, which will clarify several things, theme-wise.
As for now, though, here comes some little things I noticed and some theories.
CORRUPTED GIFTS
RWBY's journey in the Ever After seems to lead the 4 girls to meet characters, who embody the Gods' gifts. Or to better say their corruption.
The Curious Cat embodies the desire for Knowledge, which is clearly driving them crazy. They need to know everything, which means they will never be satisfied.
The Rusted Knight embodies the desire for Creation, which doesn't let him move on. Jaune needs to be a hero to function, which leads him to stagnate and keep others from evolving.
Neo/Jabberwalker embodies the desire for Destruction, which ends up breaking herself, as well. She needs to have someone to hate not to collapse and the moment she breaks Ruby can becomes an empty shell.
I wonder what will happen with Choice tbh. Is this gift gonna get corrupted too? And how? Is choice meant to be the Blacksmith/Tree? Or something else?
In general, it is interesting how all these characters are driven by a desire for a certain gift. Curiosity, a wish to protect, a willingness to break. They aren't the gifts, but are fueled by a desire for them. A desire that when left unchecked and not balanced by the other gifts can consume a being.
AFTERANS AND GRIMMS
CC: I need to know eveything. But more than anything I need to know why my makers left me here only to leave and make all (of you)
The CC is clearly envious of humans, just like the Grimms are said to be. Both Afterans and Grimms appear to be previous Creations made by the Gods, which were then discarded in favour of humanity, a perfect mix of both brothers.
The difference then is that Grimms are said to be a product only of Destruction, while the Ever After and Afterans seem to be unbalanced toward Creation. After all, the Ever After is called like this because death supposedly doesn't exist. People don't die in this realm, unless you happen to meet the Jabberwalker, who seems to be together with their acre the only product of Darkness in there.
It is interesting to consider and it clearly mirrors the unbalanced relationship between the Brothers. It is easy to imagine how Light would want a world centered around his own gifts, while leaving Darkness with the shortest end of the stick. A single acre.
That said, if the Tree is meant to work as a metaphor for the Cycle of Life, then "death" and "destruction" need to fit into the picture.
THE JABBERWALKER
Despite only having 2 episodes left, there is still some mystery surrounding this creature and their role in the Ever After. They are said to be the only creature, who can prevent ascension. In short, they are an embodyment of Destruction. Still, if they are a part of the world, it is possible they still come to the Tree, in a way or the other. So, here comes a thought.
The Tree is going to transform Afterans according to what they are and to what they want to become. This can lead to progression, like the Paper Pleasers or to regression, like the Red King, who turns into a Prince. Still, what happens if the creature just... can't figure themself out? What does happen if they choose to give up on any new possible identity?
In this case, they would choose to become nobody. They would decide to give in to anonimity, which is the opposite of self-individualization. Anonimity is a trait of Grimms, which are empty and try to fill themselves by praying on human negativity. In short, anonimity can be seen as a declination of Destruction. So, what if when Afterans can't figure themselves out... they end up becoming a Jabberwalker? Or what if the Jabberwalker is a body that collects all the souls who could not properly ascend, neither to regress nor to progress? A body with no proper identity, which can only jabber very basic and instinctive concepts, with no real meaning behind them?
After all, they very clearly allude to zombies, as RWBY even start calling them Walkers. And what are zombies if not people who lost their sense of self? And what do zombies do if not to spread an infection, which in this case is Destruction? Death?
Tumblr media
THE GIFT OF HUMANITY
Humans are different from both Grimms and Afterans in how they are a more complex mix of Creation and Destruction. As a result, they seem ot have a gift both Grimms and Afterans lack, which is choice.
Humans are not given a purpose, but can choose their purpose. Afterans need the Tree to change, while Humans can simply choose to change. I am curious to see how this difference is gonna influence the outcome of this volume.

Note
I read some comments criticizing Ruby's arc this volume and saying she did many horrible things and failed to learn from them... I really got super mad at these people! What was she even supposed to do?!
I'm with you. Honestly most of RWBY's vocal critics are like. People who clearly misunderstand the series and hold it to a ridiculous standard that defies not only writing 101 but humanity and common sense 101. If Ruby made no mistakes, she wouldn't be a good character, and then you'd have people calling her Ruby Sue. So, she can't win.
What horrible thing are they talking about? The failure at Atlas? That's my guess, so that's what I'm going off of.
I mean, I hate to tell them but every single hero/heroine fails to save a kingdom in these kinds of stories. It's like a rite of passage.
Leia watched her entire frickin' planet go boom in Star Wars. That gets repeated in the sequel trilogy.
Aang and his Gaang lost in Ba Sing Se, and badly.
Katniss has District 12 get nuked.
Idk y'all it's almost like it's a trope in hero/heroine's journey stories. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Also, when looking at the specifics of Ruby's situation... like what did you want them to do? There were no good choices. There were no guarantees. In fact, that was explicitly spelled out for us: no matter what they chose, it was a risk. It was a choice between Bad, Worse, and Worst.
Going with Ironwood's plan isn't Big Brain, it's an F in Ethics For Four Year Olds: should you kill all the poor people so the rich can live? I mean... yes it was more complicated but still. If you're ever at a point where you're justifying that, you may want to take a step back and look at your life and look at your choices (cough, a certain american political party).
They failed to save Atlas, yes. But they didn't fail to save all of Atlas. What they did still mattered.
If they're talking about the Relic... I mean, yes, Salem got the Relic, but... that was Penny's choice, not Ruby's? And Penny literally died. Plus, Penny had her entire life been forced to put duty over love for others, so for her as an individual, it was powerful to choose love over duty (the opposite of Pyrrha's choice, and even though both die, both are held up as heroes). There's this weird balance between the individual and the collective good, and no one will ever walk it perfectly.
Penny didn't make a wrong choice just because it turned out badly. If she hadn't done what she did, not only would RWBYJ have probably actually died, but Winter would have died, and if you consider collective good, many more innocent civilians would have, too. Penny was the Winter Maiden. She was the only one who stood a chance against Cinder, who was attacking civilians, and she did her duty there, so actually, it's not even so simple as love>duty for Penny's choice.
Idk there's complexity that people don't wanna acknowledge because they hate shows where women are complex.

RWBY Headcanon's Maybe Part Thirteen?
I'm still not sure what part it is, but here we go. Literacy headcanon's cause I've seen like five of those so here are my thoughts.
Also no hate for any of these, I have really messy handwriting and despite being forced to learn cursive in elementary have a lot of difficulty with it and it makes my writing almost unreadable.
All of RWBY can read but Ruby is dyslexic. Weiss writes in perfect cursive, Yang and Ruby's is average for kids their age, and Blake has that nine-year-old messy handwriting, but Blake is the only one to know sign language.
JP can read and write fine. NR? Not so much. Ren's handwriting is super messy, and Nora struggles with reading.
Oscar writes super fast so it looks messy, but if he slows down you'd think he was addressing a letter to a king.
CVY are all fine with reading and writing. Fox learned some brail while at Beacon so he'd figure out the correct restroom. Not a lot of learning in Vacuo tho, so he knows only the bare minimum.
Tai was taught to read and write at school, Raven taught herself as a kid, Summer faked her way through Beacon unable to write with minimal reading, and Qrow forced himself to learn after the Teams split so he could go on his own missions. They're all dyslexic.
Ivori is the only member of FNKI who can do cursive. Neon and Kobalt can't read or write but Ivori's a good teacher. Flynt is alright.
May learned to write in super neat cursive but spites her family with messy four-year-old handwriting. Fiona learned as a kid in the mines, but Joanna and Robyn had to get a crash course at the Academy.
Sun can't read or write, but SSN is helping him learn, which he thinks is entirely unessecary for his career choice, but he knows Blake loves to read so it's all for the pretty lady.
Neo can't drop the old habit of writing in beautiful cursive. Roman learned to read from Neo.
Emerald learned to read when she was little before she ended up on the streets and still loves to read. Despises cursive, can't do it.
Mercury was forced by his dad to be ambidextrous with his writing so he'd more "unpredictable", but he couldn't learn much with his dad smacking him over the head and calling him an idiot despite never actually teaching him the letters. To spite the bastard he has Em teach him in return for hand-to-hand lessons after their V6 argument.
Rhodes couldn't read so teaching Cinder was out of the question. Salem taught the young Cinder in a surprisingly quick and efficient way, with a kindness you shouldn't think an immortal witch conquering the world would be capable of.
Watts' cursive could replace the dictionary definition of neat.
Tyrian can't read, but if you ask him how to spell something he pops off with perfect spelling. Physically can't write with how many times he's broken his fingers.
Hazel the kinda guy to start his morning with a cup of warm coffee and a newspaper. Excellent reader, amazing cursive.
Salem has practiced her writing for thousands of years, it's beyond perfect. Knows so many languages, and secretly has been collecting literature for a few hundred years.
Adam didn't like reading, and quite honestly saw it as a waste of time. Couldn't read or write.
Ilia learned cause she wanted to connect better with Blake.
Ozma has the same collection hidden away somewhere, and just as elegant handwriting as Salem.
Goodwitch writes like she's sending a letter to her grandmother, with perfect grammar in the most amazing cursive.
Winter, the highly dyslexic child who didn't get diagnosed until she joined the military. Struggles with spelling, but was forced to seem perfect as a kid, a habit that stays with her even now. Only Penny knows the truth, and it dies with her.
Whitley can write in perfect cursive, he prefers the writing of elegantly turning every letter into a perfectly drawn dick to piss his dad off.
Penny can hypothetically write perfect cursive, but she gets really excited while writing and it ends up so messy. Re-written multiple times before being sent.
Alright this is enough for now, my wrists are starting to hurt. Carpal tunnel go brrrrrrrrr.

It's really weird how the show basically tells us that Ever After characters are made to do their own things and then try to villianize them.
Like Jabblewalker, Red Prince, Herbologist, Curious Cat do stuff they are made to do. As we saw tree just eats you and remakes you if you don't follow your path. So why are we supposed to hate those characters cuz team rwby said so even tho they are basically forced to do what they do by the world they live in? Idk about others but I felt bad for all of them after Cat said that tree remakes everyone who fails at their fate path. Like are they really at fault when their world made them do this?
Honestly, this highlights another flaw of Team RWBY's that the story refuses to address: Their tendency to blame bad things on individuals, rather than acknowledge the bad thing is a systemic and/or situational issue.
Like when they put the blame for the racism against the Faunus on singular racists like Cardin or the random guy in Atlas, instead of thnking about how their world, their governments, keep encouraging this sort of behavior.
Or when they made Adam, a victim of said racism, out to be a) the actual reason the racism existed, b) the one solely reponsible for the White Fang turning to violence. The White Fang only became violent because peaceful protests and boycotts weren't working and the humans continued going after unarmed Faunus civilians. It was a logical response to Remnant's collective bullshit, but because RT wouldn't know nuance if it shot them in the head with an overdesigned sniper rifle, Adam is made the strawman for violent protest and taken down to prove definitvely that you should never ever do anything, or be anything than a good little minority who lets themselves get trampled on. Because if you fight back like Adam and the White Fang did, that makes you just as bad as your oppressors. According to RT anyway.
And we see this again with James. Team RWBY is very quick to make him the Bad Guy™ who refused to save anybody, instead of even thinking about how James was stuck between a rock and a hard place. He was trying to save as many people as he could and keep a super-powerful magic item out of the actual Big Bad's hands. Instead Team RWBY acts like James thinking about the bigger picture makes him evil and untrustworthy, never once acknowledging their own dishonesty and secrecy. The situation isn't black and white, it's gray and there really wasn't a perfect solution. It was basically a trolley problem. And yet, the way you hear Ruby and friends tell it, it was actually just this one guy going crazy and being unreasonable.
Which leads us to the Ever After. The Ever After is fundamentally different from Remnant and its inhabitants operate on a completely different morality system. This is something that's established in the first couple of episodes. But Team RWBY are so insistent on pinning the Ever After's less pleasant aspects, like Ascension, on singular Afterans. It's like they just plugged their ears and pretended they were still home where everything works the way they want it to. And then they throw tantrums and get mad at the Afterans when that isn't the case. The Cat is naturally curious and whimsy, because their world made them to be? Ugh, no, they're obviously just being childish and annoying to make things difficult for Team RWBY personally. The Cat didn't tell us stuff we didn't ask about? Clearly they're evil! And the same logic gets applied to nearly every Afteran these girls interact with.
God, I really want someone to tell these girls to shut up and listen at some point. They have the mentality of spoiled toddlers.

dumb headcanons i made during class (some have heavy bias, some are heavyv projections)
all of team strq has anger issues, each of them deal with it differently and some deal with it better than others. tai and qrow are probably the most chillaxed regarding their temper
raven has always found summer intimidating and looks up to her, her crush started around their second year at beacon
ruby hates having dry skin
weiss doesn’t do well with physical touch, but she usually always accepts small stuff like hand holding and shoulder holding, ruby being the exception with more bigger forms of physical affection
raven’s love languages are acts of service, words of affirmation, and physical touch
raven listens to 90s alternative rock when she actually feels like listening to music
yang has a minecraft youtube that she makes videos with, usually showing off her private builds or reviewing mods
weiss cannot be trusted in video games, she will destroy everything unintentionally
ruby bakes, yang grills, blake cooks, and weiss does absolutely nothing. dont trust her near the kitchen
summer is a comic nerd like ruby, before she died she had a box or two just of comic books that have been lent to ruby
blake makes music but she is a beginner. she takes tips from weiss
ruby and sun are fans of weiss’ music, think of swifties sort of likers
raven and cinder’s odd relationship started during their teamup, one night they had a hookup and haven’t stopped having flings every so often. their relationship is built up on hatesex stress-relieving (aka pretty unhealthy) but overtime, they end up falling for the other in some sort of sense and neither of them know what to do
raven still has summer’s cape, she sleeps with it sometimes
ruby’s love languages are quality time, physical touch, and words of affirmation
90% of the rwby cast are trans and gay
during their beacon years, qrow would taunt raven with her crush on summer since he most likely wouldve found out before the others
despite summer’s resentment towards raven, she still cares about her and misses her. she doesnt do anything about it though, both of them know raven can’t really come back from that
winter plays shooters and she’s a fucking boss at it
penny had a youtube where she talked about betta fish (*smiling*)
penny enjoyed walks through the night
blake and yang make card towers together to pass the time, ruby joins in occasionally
cinder is illiterate due to her upbringing
blake probably listens to k-pop and if not blake, then definitely ruby
if fnaf exists in rwby, ruby is a fnaf kid
pyrrha was a painter and taught weiss how to use watercolors. weiss doesn’t paint as much as she used to because of her association of it with pyrrha
ruby and pyrrha did gardening together, granted pyrrha was mainly in control of the garden. ruby was really just there to spend time with her, but she did help with what she could
yang had a small crush on pyrrha when she was around
penny liked to collect things, no matter what it was. usually nature sort of stuff, like rocks and sticks, maybe even sand until it got everywhere
penny made paper puppets
before flash got shut down, sun would make shitty sonic flash games
sun was a newgrounds kid
neo uses her semblance to reach tall things and to bring stuff to her when she doesn’t wanna stand
raven cries listening to autoheart (cause it’s funny)
neon uses her tail to bring people closer to her or to “hold their hands”
ruby always thought neon was cute
summer’s love languages are quality time, physical touch, and gift giving
cinder has trouble connecting with people and she doesn’t try to, so when she felt an unsettling feeling in her stomach due to neo’s (and emerald’s lol) absence she didn’t know how to deal with it
^ (adding onto the emerald note) cinder convinces herself she doesn’t really care about Emerald, because for the most part it IS true, but she was oddly hurt to see Emerald’s change. She got attached to Emerald during their time together (mainly because of emerald’s OWN attachment), but she was never aware of it
blake likes to sleep under beds, but she doesnt tell anyone
90% of the rwby cast is autistic
RUBY IS AUTISTIC!!!!!! and has ptsd (pretty sure the ptsd one is canon tho)
raven has bpd and ptsd
ruby has a lot of ocs she doesnt know what to do with. she doesn’t even remember most of their names
emerald is a roleplayer
weiss prefers to follow schedules and routines heavily
pyrrha and ruby probably wouldve bonded over the pressure of high expectations, being a leader/a warrior, and ended up getting closer that way
during beacon, summer was always the one to make sure raven got to class on time, she would either be late or just try skipping usually. there were rare moments where raven convinced summer to skip with her, just to be alone together

I'm ngl I feel kinda afraid to mention any positive aspects abt the show bc it feels abit nowadays like you just, can't enjoy it anymore. Like no matter what RWBY does you won't be happy and any positive aspects mentioned you'd find a way to turn into something bad or Not Good Enough and idk I love most of your essays but that kinda throws me off. I just wish you were able to watch it a bit less... Against It. Hating it is fine, I hate it, it's a horribly written horribly paced mess with awful characters, awful humour and the worst voice acting in the industry, but I can unapologetically appreciate when a good scene happens and it feels like you can't, or at least can't without adding 50 asterisks and conditionals and ways it could be better. IDK it makes me a bit sad sometimes, since you dedicate so much time to this.
I feel you, anon, though we've known this was coming for years. Unlike a collection of short stories or other, separated media, the longer RWBY makes mistakes the more future content is going to suffer. Four years past where I personally think the show started having serious issues, yeah, there's more to criticize than praise (imo, obviously) and I'm not inclined to pretend otherwise. You say yourself, "I hate it, it's a horribly written, horribly paced mess with awful characters, awful humor, and the worst voice acting in the industry" so honestly I'm a little confused as to where you think these good scenes are that I'm missing. If the plot, tone, characters, humor, and acting all suck, what are we left with? And if you "hate" the show, why would you expect others to find more to praise?
Personally, I feel like I do appreciate the good scenes when we see them, but yeah, they're going to come with those 50 asterisks because, as said, everything is interconnected. If the show does a good job depicting Ruby's grief over Penny, I'm still going to question why we didn't get that when she first died. If the show nails an awesome "I'm still just small" line from Little, that unfortunately makes all the terrible humor surrounding it that much more apparent. My recaps strive to unpack all the aspects that I see, which means that after years of missteps the good stuff is coming with a huge load of baggage. For me, it would be a serious misrepresentation of the text to go, "Wow, Weiss hitting herself in the head with a rock sure was funny! Good on RWBY for writing such a comedic scene" and just ignore the context of that interrupting Ruby's grief because I don't want my recaps to be too mean. These recaps aren't going to RT. They're not written with the intention coaxing a writer towards improvement without breaking their spirit. There's absolutely no reason why I should pull punches - say less than everything I'm thinking - especially in a fandom that already works so hard to paint RWBY as better than I personally think it is.
I'm not going to insult you by assuming your intentions, but frankly I really dislike this whole 'It's so sad you can't enjoy the show anymore, you've dedicated so much to this, what's the point if you're not praising it?' perspective. I've heard it a lot over the years and 99% of the time it's sanctimonious nonsense. Again, I'm not accusing you of that, anon, just acknowledging that a lot of people have tried to "help" me over the years not because they care, but because they don't want anyone criticizing RWBY and have realized that outright attacks haven't worked. But the reality is that you don't know me, or what I get out of RWBY, or what's an enjoyable way for me to spend my time. It's totally fine - and understandable - if you're upset that my recaps have grown more and more critical over the years, but the answer to that discomfort is to stop reading them. There's no constructive criticism to offer here, just an implied request for me to lie and say that I think the show is better written than it actually is... which isn't going to happen. You shouldn't be "afraid" to mention a positive take - the fandom is 99% positive takes - and if you don't like the idea of sending in an ask and me potentially disagreeing, there are thousands of other RWBY content creators who will give you an enthusiastic response. Yeah, it sucks that you can't read recaps overflowing with praise and it sucks that I can't write them, but that's due to RWBY making those major mistakes and allowing them to snowball for half a decade. As said, you claim to "hate" the show and provided a long list of its broad and far-reaching problems, anon. You should thus understand that the problem here is in RWBY being really badly written, not me acknowledging that it's really badly written.

I think you and I have a lot of the same opinions on Tai Yang. I can tell that the writers were going for a typical dad character who is not afraid to tell his daughter like it is, but he problem is that Tai is also a very boring character and the writers have a chronic case of foot in mouth syndrome.
Tai Yang has no empathy for Yang's disability and trauma because the writers have no empathy for Yang's disability and trauma. They say so in the volume 4 commentary when they call her PTSD recovery arc boring.
So Tai's general philosophy of "try to get everything back to normal as quickly as possible with absolutely no care for you learning to grieve in your own time and come to terms with it whenever you need to, up to and including taking a mobility aid that you've made it very clear you're not ready for"
It's also just really uncomfortable watching a group of able bodied men tell a disabled girl how she should feel about her own trauma that none of them actually care to emphasize with.
I definitely don't think Tai Yang is abusive, but I do think his treatment of Yang in volume 4 was very clearly not ok. And I lay the blame mainly on the writers for that because the writers are the reason most things in RWBY are bad.
Another thing I absolutely hated about Tai's "lessons" with Yang is how much of a prick he is to her about things that shouldn't matter.
No, it's not Yang's fault she lost her arm. What did you want her to do? Not immediately try to rescue her friend? Of course she jumped in without a plan! Blake was being stabbed right in front of her! She didn't have time!
No, Yang's semblance was not the issue, She actually uses it pretty sparingly because it's a great finishing move. In fact, collecting all of the damage you were given throughout a fight to then send it back at full force to completely incapacitate your opponent when the time is right, Is probably the best strategic use semblance I've ever seen in this show! Waiting until the last minute to unleash all of your power when your opponent has been tired out sufficiently, is already a good strategy!
And even if Yang was supposed to be learning to get better control of her temper, It failed miserably because now Yang's angry all the time She doesn't even have enough love in her heart to shine it on both her girlfriend and her sister when previously she loved with all the warmth of the sun.
It's just a super frustrating mess.
Ikr?
Like what was going through Tai’s mind in V4? Better question, what was going through the minds of the writers in V4?
RT wanted Tai to be the cool dad figure who cares deeply for his daughters, I mean look at how he’s shown in Chibi. But then you remember in the show proper that Tai grew emotionally distant after Summer, which is fine. People grieve in different ways, not all of them healthy to the people around us.
Yet you see that method of being emotionally distant and lacking empathy in V4. His daughter got her arm cut off? Why doesn’t she just get over herself already? Not to forget how hypocritical it is of him to say given that he seemingly took all of the time in the world grieving while Ruby was growing up.
Tai is a flawed character but the show doesn’t take it’s time exploring that or even admitting it’s a thing. Truly nothing is more RWBY than the writers shoving things down and hoping no one notices and if they do, they’re literally Hitler.
Tbh, I see why Raven left Tai.

RWBY VOLUME 9 SPOILERS | RANT(?)
A lot of ppl r talking about the next episode or the one after having a Punderstorm for Neo & Ruby, which I think is just a guarantee at this point. But how a lot of people want it to go is very much not enough. Like yes, I think the Punderstorm will be to get the Roman situation figured out. But once they return to whatever area they're in before getting sent into the storm, THEY NEED TO HAVE A CONVERSATION. They still have their scrolls, as shown by Ruby, in one of the earlier chapters, so they can communicate through that.
So many people think Neo is irredeemable and also that she might die by the end of the volume. She might die at the end (though Rooster Teeth has already fucked themselves over enough I don't think that's a smart move), but she is definitely not irredeemable, and her Ruby are very much mirrors in many ways. I saw a lot of theories since Volume 8 and over the 2 year break of ppl like Penny (until she died), or Jaune would help Neo get better and be her friend. But NOT ONE PERSON said Ruby, too blinded by the fact that Neo is upset with them and completely ignoring the fact that that will absolutely get resolved at some point.
They both lost EVERYTHING at The Fall of Beacon. Neo lost Roman, her One Thing, her WHOLE LIFE, gone in an instant, and she didn't even find out until after the fact because she got swept off by the wind because of Ruby hitting the button on her parasol.
Ruby lost her childhood. She was too young when Summer left and died for that to really have the same effect, though I will touch on this later. She was 15 when in one night her school, her kingdom, her home, got destroyed. She watched her best friend, who she loved (I'm not gonna argue with ppl today on whether or not it was romantic or platonic. That's not the point of this particular post), die. She literally saw Penny's torn apart corpse and barely even had time to cry before having to fight for her life and the lives of everyone around her. Then she saw her unconscious sister, WITH HER ARM CUT OFF, laying on the ground next to their other teammate who had been stabbed and is crying while apologizing to Yang's unconscious body. AND THEN SHE GOES TO GET PYRRHA AND WATCHES HER DIE!
She doesn't even get to process anything until waking up days later, where she is asked a bunch of questions and asked to relive everything right after waking up. Then her sister, who is a mother to her, pushes her away after telling them that one of their friends ran away, while the other was forced to leave by her abusive "father." Yang can't even say I love you back to Ruby. Then she leaves on a two year trip that ends up leaving her with LITERALLY the weight of all of Remnant on her shoulders, millions if not billions of lives, and she's been told that supposedly, THERE'S NO WAY TO ACTUALLY WIN. SHE IS 17 FOR FUCKS SAKE.
....collecting myself. *breathes*
Okay.
What I need to happen. Either in tomorrow's or next week's episode. (This can happen in the center platform of the Punderstorm or when they get back from it. Either is fine, though I think it would be nice for it to be the former) Once Ruby figures out why Neo hates her, Neo finds out the truth, and that gets resolved. I really want Neo/Trivia and Ruby to just sit. Just sit and fucking breathe. To cry, to scream, to get out everything. I want them to know that the other understands. Neo/Trivia can finally grieve her childhood and especially Roman, and Ruby can do the same. She hasn't had even one moment where she's been allowed to be actually vulnerable and healthily express her feelings and grief about Penny. She should be allowed to grieve and mourn. And they should both be there for each other, over the ill-conceived (i think thats the right word) differences, away from anyone that may interrupt them (especially if this happens on the center platform of their Punderstorm), just a moment of peace and silence. End of Chapter 8, cliffhanger.
Chapter 9. Eventually, the Punderstorm will end/WBY, and Jaune will find them, in which case they either catch up and see them sitting together and being at rest (something they haven't seen from Neo ever and from Ruby in a LONG time) and they, albeit cautiously, figure out what's going on, OR they (especially Yang and Weiss) go head first and attack Neo, causing Ruby to get up and stand in the way to explain everything, and of course apoligize (Yang, Jaune, and them better apoligize too though or else-).
Much like how Yang didn't really trust Emerald right away, I don't think they're gonna immediately drop all walls, and everything will be hunky dorey with Neo/Trivia. But I think that they will sorta quietly (not just because she can't speak-) follow along and try to help them get out, I don't think she'd sacrifice herself to the tree (if that does end up being a thing), she still wants to kill Cinder. If she does sacrifice herself to the tree so they can get back, I think there'd be a little scene with her and Ruby where she promises Neo/Trivia that they'll take down Cinder and with a death grip hug followed by tears, tells her that her sacrifice won't be in vain. Ruby makes a promise to a scared girl that she sees herself in so much as a trade. She gave away her Emblem, which symbolized Summer's promise to come back, Summer didn't want Ruby to get wrapped up in this. That's why she left. And her sacrifice was in vain. And Ruby won't let that happen again.
Also. If any of you fucks. Think to comment/reblog this with some stupid shit (This is not a post that is asking for criticism or opinions, nor a place for you to call me delusional because "there isn't enough time for all that" or "oh Ruby is probably just gonna lose it and attack Neo without remorae" or whatever the fuck). I will bury you alongside Pyrrha & Penny.
Maybe I am delusional, but then again, maybe I'm not, I don't care, I just needed to get this out. If for nothing else, then to make you guys think and to tire myself out from typing.
With exhaustion, Jace

You clearly missed the point I was making. Blacksun going to the dance together is still not a date because they could have gone together as friends and Neptune joined them right after as well. Not to mention Blake saved her first dance for Yang and Arkos kissing obviously shows attraction to each other, but again that’s through actions and not from them saying out loud that they are attracted to each other prior to that happening because by what you said previously, to you characters need to say out loud that they are attracted to a certain sex or say out loud that they like a certain sex in order for you to understand that they are attracted to them when not even Arkos and Blacksun did that in the show, which is why I mentioned previously about their actions showing their attraction and not always from them outwardly saying that they are
The lgbtq+ merch you mentioned has canon queer characters like Coco and May on them, but my point was pointing out how the one bumblebee jacket sold doesn’t give them much in comparison to the other things sold
Also sorry you don’t speak for all queer people in the lgbtq+ community, you only speak for yourself as someone in the lgbtq+ because again a ton of lgbtq+ people don’t have a problem with their relationship
I AM ONLY SPEAKING FOR MYSELF, YOU ARE JUST GETTING ANGRY THAT I DON'T THINK THE EXACT SAME THING AS YOU. YOU ARE THE PERSON COMING INTO MY ASK BOX REPEATEDLY TO TRY TO CONVINCE ME TO ACCEPT LESS THAN I WANT.
And nooooo, moron, I said that I needed explicit confirmation, not that the confirmation has to be verbal. More of you twisting my words and purposefully misunderstanding me. You're just trying to find some way out of admitting that the early RWBY years included more straight-ship canonization than RWBY has managed for queer characters in ten years, and honestly I couldn't care less at this point, just stop doing it in my ask box.
Sun asking Blake to accompany him to a prom-like dance and the writers specifically writing Sun to ask if they're going together (emphasis on the together clear) and Blake saying yes they are but she has plans to dance the first dance with someone else IS STILL IN FACT more confirmation than her and Yang going fucking clubbing with a group and having the writers specifically write other characters to wonder if it might possibly mean they're together and leaving it up in the air. If Yang had asked Blake if she wants to go out to a romantic setting with her and Blake coming and Yang asking if this meant they were going together and Blake saying 'yeah yes it does' it would've been confirmation. Them being like 'we're going out dancing with Team FNKI' and then other characters being like "think they're together?" "No, I don't think so" is not a confirmed date. And Blake and Sun aren't even the most explicit opposite-sex attraction which comes in the form of 1. Jaune chasing women, asking them out, having clear conversations with his friends about being head over heels for them, and then also 2. Pyrrha literally kissing him. If Blake and Yang had a kiss I would consider them canon. If Yang had gone on a date with another girl that wasn't Blake or asked out a different girl in the first couple of seasons instead of going to the dance by herself I'd have considered her a canon wlw person.
And you clearly don't know what I'm talking about when I say the pride shirts, but I wasn't referring to the latest pride collection, I was referring to previous Pride shirts they used to sell. Like... I'm being serious when I ask this: Are you a minor, or did you only very recently get into RWBY and have tunnel vision where you think that the only things that exist are in your general immediate perception?
And again, I know I'm not speaking for every queer person, I'm only speaking for myself. But you are actively sending me hate trying to convince me to just pretend that RWBY is on par with things like Steven Universe and the Owl House and other things like that and I just won't. Why do you need every queer person to view this show and this ship exactly as you do? As of right now, Blake and Yang in the year of our lord 2023 have about as much confirmation as a BBC show about a wizard and a prince that ended more than a decade ago did, and I think that's a poor showing, I want better. Stop trying to convince me that I must just be secretly bigoted against my own interests because of that. And again, answer all of my points in my post and also in this one too while you're at it or fucking disengage and just block me.
