14. “Hey, I’m with you, okay? Always.”

"Do... do you ever still miss it?"

Hilda's hands hung limp at her sides, as if unwilling to bear the weight. Her gaze stayed on the far side of the wall; on the rolling hills and rising trees, the pines and dales she'd spent the past year among, alone save for Twig. And Frida knew her answer before she gave it.

"Yeah, I do," she admitted softly; there was a little sniffle in her words, and one sweater-sleeve reached up to loosely rub her eyes. "Out there... it was home, for a long time, and some days everything felt like it used to, before me and Mum moved here."

She gestured wide, to the city stretching out behind her. "I still don't think I fit in in Trolberg, really, especially with the Safety Patrol. And Mum's part of that too, now, and she's still worrying too much about me and Alfur's moved away and Tontu won't even talk to me yet and... and..."

Her words turned white-hot, pained, and in a moment Frida was at her side, reaching out to gently rub at her arm. "Hey, it's okay," she began, uncertainty making her insides squirm. "I'm here; I'm with you, always."

"That's the thing," Hilda noted, chest shaking under her coat. "I could go right back out there, and keep living the way I always thought I wanted, but... I couldn't, really. I couldn't do that to Mum, even though we still fight sometimes, or to Da-, to Lucy, or to you.

"Because being out there, all alone, it... it made me realise something; something Woodman tried to tell me once, a long time ago."

"Oh?" Frida drifted closer, her other hand up to the other girl's far shoulder in a sort of halfway-hug. And finally, Hilda looked back, and there was a tiny smile beneath the tears.

"That home is where the people who love you are," she finished, eyes shining. All at once her arms came up, grabbing Frida and turning their hold into a full embrace as she squeezed almost for dear life.

"I'm not leaving again," she promised, and Frida felt a rise of warmth, despite all her concerns, at those words. "I'll be with you always, too."

For a moment, the two of them just held on; it wasn't a reunion, that had already come and gone, but it felt like it anyway and a weight coming off all at the same time. And by the time they parted, falling back to comfortably-held hands, both had mist in their eyes.

"You know," Frida began softly, squeezing Hilda's hands gently, "there is one place in Trolberg that might feel a bit more familiar." She couldn't help glancing aside, just for a moment. "I probably should have told you sooner..."

"It's okay," Hilda promised, giving a gentle squeeze of her own. "There's a lot of things I still need to catch up on. I still don't know when Mum's going to admit she's dating Gerda." She let out a laugh at that, a tiny, soft, warm thing, and Frida couldn't help returning it.

"In that case," she began again, gently leading Hilda back away from the wall. "Why don't I show you now?

"I think you're going to love the Underground."

The Runaway Hilda AU

The Runaway Hilda AU is an alternate universe, diverging from the end of Hilda Season 2 - in this timeline, Hilda isn't caught by her mum at the start of The Stone Forest, and instead escapes to Frida's, only to come home to Johanna even more upset, causing their biggest argument yet.

As a result, Hilda decides her mum would be better off without her, and runs away from home to live in the wilderness. Johanna, desperate to find her missing daughter, joins the Safety Patrol, and ultimately becomes deputy leader. Hilda finally comes home after a year away, only to find out that a lot has changed in her absence, and things can't go back to how they were before she left. For a more detailed summary, see here.

Day Seven: Free Day/Favorite AU(s) (Yours, someone else's, or both!)

Now it's the last day and it's a free one. Specifically about AU's and whatever else. But I'm going to admit this. I don't really have a favorite AU. I don't really delve into many AU's in the Hilda fanbase. But you know, I have read some stuff that is AU related. Even though I mainly read stuff that could be friendly to canon or not. It depends, but again, I don't know every AU and I don't catch up with them. But I want to give praise to @wildflowers-of-trolberg and her amazing "Runaway Hilda" AU.

While I have only read the "Main" story of it. Not any of the side stories from what I know. But I am genuinely impressed with the amount of work Pikablob has done for making this one big AU. She is a very talented person with all of the writing she has done. Even if we disagree on certain things. I'd recommend checking out their account if you like HIlda.

I also need to read @hyperpsychomaniac 's work as well because they are very talented from what I've seen.

But I want to talk about my own stuff. It's something I've thought of before. But it's still in development. I question if I'll continue it. It all started with a...simple story of Eda meeting Johanna in a certain scenario. And I should continue trying to write a cohesive timeline that pretty much contains Hilda, The Owl House and Infinity Train in one multiverse.

I try to make my stories canon friendly where you can imagine they likely happen in canon before or after certain things. But I did change one thing for Infinity Train. Mainly the end of book 3. But everything else before those events are canon. I'm speaking about books 4, 1, 2 and book 3 episodes 1-8.

One of the challenges I know I am going to face is adding Hilda season 3 into the timeline. Because that season revealed some game changing information for the series. But also, I have thought maybe because of season 3, the multiverse connecting these three shows might be so much easier.

Granted, I have nothing major with any huge crossovers. I've mainly written some Joheda stuff. Even though I'd REALLY want to write some major stuff with Infinity Train. My old plans were to include Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur into it. But I felt because of other plans and other things I've been thinking, I'd likely rather not add a Marvel property into it.

But I genuinely question about deleting that and if I want to go with through with that. Because season 1 is only a thing and season 2 is going to introduce a lot of new stuff. Yet I like the funny idea of characters like Erik Ahlberg, Emperor Belos, Simon Laurent, Amelia Hughes, Adam, Lute, Alastor and the Vee's all exist in the same multiverse. Yet I should say that would be pretty terrifying.

In a nutshell, I have thought I basically made my own MCU using shows that you need to watch to understand this timeline if I were to ever crossover more of them.

I'm getting distracted and should post this. This is the last of my Hilda appreciation week posts. Thank you all for liking my previous posts. :) I really liked that this existed. It's a great way to have the fandom talk about what they love about the show.

Ingvar and Ophelia both have this undying curiosity for the world around them– especially about humanity. Ingvar’s natural compassion will intrigue Ophelia and she’d enjoy having long talks with him to pick at his brain– especially since he’s been alive for so long (and if he’d eventually be so willing, his past of being born from Earth itself)! Even if all he did for days was simply meditate in the wilderness, she would want to know what about?

It’d be fascinating to see how these two will interact in the long run; who view death so differently due to their pasts. One being so petrified of the horrors surrounding death and the other being so used to it that the horrors feel extremely distant. There's potential there I can smell it.

With horrors like ATLAS around as well, I think Ophelia would grow extremely protective of her gentle friend (objectionably so).

Ophelia: I would kill for you :) 

Ignvar: DO NOT.

Speaking of ATLAS. This is less Ophelia geared tbh, I'm cheating here a little bit, but it’s been an ear worm— while ATLAS is very much an organization that I shamefully must admit is still being developed— that also just means there’s a lot of room to play around with if it piques your interest :3c

While the space colony had been destroyed, there still remain plenty of hidden bases scattered across Earth— and it’d be a uh— be a real shame if they got wind of a certain very powerful and very fascinating giant. His sheer potential of physical power and immense stature would be something they wouldn't want to pass up, let alone the intrigue of him being the last of his kind. Would they be able to clone more (for their own personal use, of course)? How many secrets does his genetic coding hide?

There are fates worse than death, and it's usually by ATLAS' hands.

Also, if you really want to subject Ignvar (or even Hilda, runaways do tend to get lost) to the horrors, being part of the space colony ATLAS as an experiment alongside Ophelia (and Doc! they tend to be a package deal) is something that will always be on the table. A ton of wiggle room and creative freedom for what that could entail if you're interested! No pressure at all thought, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea.

If you think Ophelia’s over-protectiveness will be bad with Ignvar, then buckle up for how she’ll be with Hilda. 

I never thought I would ever see this for Ophelia, but with how spunky and idealistic Hilda is, I can possibly see her filling the shoes of a mentor! Not your orthodox mentor that is. She’d be more like the cool, wine-aunt that heavily supports & encourages her niece’s antics versus a true mother figure. 

Hilda’s own compassionate, bleeding heart makes Ophelia’s ache, and she’ll want nothing more than to protect that. Ophelia's wanderlust can easily lead her anywhere, so running into a runaway teen wouldn't be too farfetched at all. 👀

For a lil AU plot involving more fantasy, fairy tale vibes— I can easily see Ophelia being this Fae Trickster that grows fond of Hilda for the same above reasons, but in this case she typically does not enjoy humanity due to the horrors caused by their hands (hypocritical, she causes enough horrors). However, perhaps Hilda could change the trickster’s heart?

I don't think nisse are legally citizens of Trolberg? Like, human law doesn't apply to them IMO - it's something I plan to bring up if I eventually get back to the Runaway Hilda AU. But that means I can't see this happening :((

For Frida, I really like Meet Me In The Woods by Lord Huron - it started with Marra Frida, and I still use it as a marra theme (as well as the theme of the Underground in the Runaway Hilda AU, which is kinda where Frida's witchy vibes and the marra vibes combine). But I also think it works with her in general, especially becoming a witch.

My main Frilda theme is Shenandoah, by Sean Dagher - this started with Frilderin in Hilda & The Secret Of Black Rock, but I think it suits soft moments between just Hilda and Frida too <3

(In the Runaway AU, Beeswing by Grace Petrie and The Truth by James Blunt are also Frilda themes :))

Hellooo. I’ve been meaning to ask: how did the whole trans-david/lucy thing start? I’m not complaining, I actually really like it, I’m just confused as to how it begun.

Well Lucy got her start l about 2-3 Months ago by @pikablob AKA cinnamon-sparrow-scout as apart of there Runaway Hilda AU. Which if you haven't read you should give it a shot its pretty good.

@dalec it didn't start with the Runaway Hilda AU; the idea came about to me after watching the Eternal Warriors (I know it's not what the showrunners intended, but David's whole anxiety over being "just built wrong" and not comfortable in who he was kinda got me thinking...). I wrote a oneshot about it called How Did You Know?, and just kinda pulled the name Lucy out of nowhere because it sounded nice with Hilda & Frida.

I decided to add Lucy into the Runaway Hilda AU later, since I wanted to give her some big change while Hilda was away and it was already a headcanon of mine. She's now in 3 of my AUs, and it's become a wider fandom thing!

As an aside - way before this entire Lucy thing even started, @nisse-room mentioned David being a trans girl in her Huld Codices AU but I had no idea about it (she's called Diana in that IIRC).

Okie this is something I've been wondering for a while: what do you think Lauren would be like in the Runaway Hilda AU? How would she react to meeting another runaway, avoiding civilisation just like she did, and then discovering *they share a mum*?? What would she think about Johanna joining the Safety Patrol? (Sorry that's a lot of questions)

oooooooooh! I love your runaway au btw! And you can NEVER ask too many questions - ESPECIALLY about Lauren

I think how she’d fit in to this au very much depends on when in the timeline this au takes place - before or after she visits trollberg

If it was after I think she’d be heartbroken, she finally came home to her family only for it to fall apart in front of her, and I think she’d have a very strong internal battle about whether or not to stay with her mum for support or run away to find her sister.

But if it was BEFORE she decided to come home, which I like much more for this au, I think that would be very interesting! I like the idea of the two of them meeting because of some monster attacking a village out in the wilderness or something like that, maybe around the time when Lauren is considering coming home, which would give her a reason to be nearer to the wall. The two of the, could team up, with no idea that they’re actually sisters until after their adventure is over, maybe because they’re describing what their mums were like and they realise they’re describing the exact same person. It could give them something to bond over, both of them missing their mum terribly, but too afraid of rejection to come back home. Then Hilda could convince Lauren to stick with her instead of going home just yet, and maybe the two of them could adventure together, and Lauren could show her the places she’s travelled and the friends she’s met.

I think the existence of Lauren in this au would make things extra hard for Johanna - that’s both of her daughters ran away, imagine what that would do to her emotionally. Lauren running away inspired her to be a better mother to Hilda, but Hilda running away is what broke her - maybe even convinced her that she’s a terrible mother, and that they were right to leave her. And assuming that they both come home at the same time, seeing both her daughters side by side, home at last would be,,, a lot for her I think lol

As for how Lauren feels about Johanna joining the saftey patrol, I don’t think she’d approve. It seems that the saftey patrol was only established after the black hound incident (maybe it existed in the past but I think it was at least dismantled for a while before Erik brought it back), so Lauren wouldn’t have any prior knowledge as to what it is, so all she knows is that her mum has sided with the team that’s forcing all magical creatures out of trollberg - and those creatures are her friends, dammit. But she’s also an adult, and she knows how hard it must have been for her mother to lose both her daughters like that (once she’s been reassured that her mum always loved her), so I think she’d disapprove, but she wouldn’t be angry beyond the initial shock and the “HOW COULD YOU?!”, she’d be,,,,judgmental and go quiet whenever it was brought up, constantly trying to convince her to leave whenever she can.
