You weren't one to have bad luck. You were good to the universe, and it was good right back to you. That's why, when your car broke down in the middle of a frightening, dark street, you figured that it had to be some serious karma. Especially when there was a storm roaming outside of your car doors.
This was your route home from work every night. It was always an empty street, pretty much in the middle of nowhere, so it got you home faster than the highway.
Tonight though, your car decided that it would rather shut down than take you home. Luckily, you could pull over to the side of the road before it completely broke down.
That only intensified your fear of the dark woods beside you. This road, as many times as you drove by it, always spooked you. It was not very appealing at night, as it was surrounded by a deep, dark woods.
That's why, you couldn't believe it when you first ever saw that your dear friend, Diane Sherman lived down here.
It was a secluded area, and didn't look very friend for just a woman and her daughter.
And that's also why you found yourself getting out of your car, and walking down the street towards her house once you found out that you had no service. You figured you wouldn’t.
You walked quickly, for many reasons. Multiple being, you didn't want to get struck by lightning, the cold rain was soaking your clothes through and through, and you were absolutely terrified.
That's why, you knocked on Diane's door as loud as you could, not even thinking that she could be asleep or in the shower. You were just so desperate for her right now.
Diane's sitting on the couch when she hears a knock. It's abrupt, to anyone else, but to her, it slowly drifts into the room. It's loud, and it goes on for a few more moments.
She gets up, and cautiously approaches the door. She isn't expecting visitors. She never really does anymore since Chloe had gone off to college.
There's another knock when she asks, "Who is it?" The knock shakes the entire doorframe, and the frantic first against it startles Diane.
"It's me, y/n" comes your shaky response. You don't know if you’re shaken up from the cold, or the fear, but either way, you look as if you had just walked around the entire continent of Antartica.
Diane hastily unlocks the door, she swings it open, and when she meets eye to eye with you, she straightens herself up. Your clothes are wet to the point where she wonders if you were swimming in a deep puddle. Your hair is beginning to get tangled, and the color draining from your face is suggesting that you are must not be okay.
"Y/n? What's wrong?" She says, but then moves out of the way so you can walk in "come in, I don't want you to catch a cold."
You are violently shivering. It doesn't help that the heater in your car hadn't worked either. You've been freezing the entire drive, and this had only intensified it.
You don't answer at first, because the warmth of her house is all you can think about at first. Her door closes, and you hear it lock. You suddenly don't feel so afraid anymore.
"Y/n?" The older woman asks again, she realizes that she’s trying to snap you out of your daydream.
"Yes sorry. I'm sorry. My car just broke down right down the road from here. I have no service and you were the closet nearby."
She takes a moment to process what you had said, because you said it too fast, and your chattering teeth was nearly as loud as the sound of your voice.
"Maybe I shouldn't have came here. I'm sorry, it was just really dark, and cold, and rainy and I was kind of scared. I probably sound so pathetic right now."
"No, stop it. Don't say that." Her voice is soft. Softer than a summer night. You wanted to cry at her gentleness. But you didn't. That would be embarrassing. "I'm glad you came here. Seriously. I don't want you all alone out there."
She moves closer, and want to take a step back, you really do, but you don't. You cannot fall for her further, but your feet simply won't allow you to move.
"Honey, you're shivering badly. How about we get you in a warm bath, and some clean clothes?"
She puts her hand on your back. It's warm, and it gentle. It's barely there, but it is. "You don't have to do all of that for me, Diane." You elicit an airy chuckle, as it was silly for her to take so much care of you when the primary problem was that your car had broken down.
"Oh hush, you. Don't be silly."
That was all she had said, and all you had said too, until she had grabbed your hand and brought you up the stairs.
Diane's house smelled of pumpkin, and that crisp autumn air. It smelled like home, and was a cozy atmosphere. You hadn't been here in awhile, but you suddenly missed the days you would spend in this house.
Diane kneeled down to one of her drawers, and starting digging through for some clothes for you to wear. She eventually pulled out a sweatshirt and sweatpants. If you didn't already fall down the Diane rabbit hole, then you were sure going to wearing her clothes.
To fill the awful silence, well, besides the sound of the heater, you decided to speak, "You know, It's pretty funny that my car broke down here. I was just thinking about you the other day."
It sounded better in your head, really. You weren't quite thinking when you said it.
She turned her head towards you, and stood up. With the clothes in her head, she walked to you. "Really, and what were you thinking about." She had a grin from ear to ear. You didn't know what would happen though, if you were to tell her that you were thinking about kissing her silly.
"Nothing in particular."
"Really?" She asks. She doesn't believe you. You don't believe yourself either.
"Yeah."
"Do you think about me often?"
"Almost all the time." If this were a movie, you would've leaned in and kissed her. It was great opportunity to, too. Although, you couldn't jeopardize her kindness of taking care of you tonight.
"Well then, we better get you warmed up before your brain stops working" She grinned, and walked off to her bathroom, assuming you would follow.
Like a puppy dog would, you trailed right behind her. Standing behind her, you felt the urge to wrap your arms around your waist, kiss her cheek, making her sigh and melt into your warmth.
But you weren't warm. You were freezing and soaked, which, was the first -but not the only- reason that you couldn't do that.
"The towels are right here. Soaps there. I'll just be waiting in my room. If you need help working the shower then just let me know." As she explained, and pointed all around, you got lost in thought.
You didn't want to be alone. Maybe that was one of the reasons you came here in the first place. Because you wanted Diane so badly, and that desire to be with her was trying to claw its way out.
"Can you stay with me?" You blurted, right as she finished her last word. The older woman, for just a moment, looked slightly stunned. When she looked down at your lips, saw that you were nervously biting them, and realized that your cheeks were a bright red, her face softened.
"Are you sure? I mean, I don't mind but the shower doors are glass so I don't want to disrespect your privacy."
“I just...I really don't want to be alone I guess. I'm sorry, you don't have to stay in here if you don't want to" you looked down, suddenly very hot rather than cold. You wanted to kick yourself for making Diane uncomfortable.
"I'll stay. Don't apologize sweetie, it's perfectly fine, okay?" She hooked a finger under your chin, and tilted your head back up.
"Okay."
You breathed in deeply when she took a seat on the other side of the room. She looked at her fingers, the floor, anything to take her eyes and mind off the fact that you were undressing right in front of her.
Diane didn't move her attention once the shower started. She stayed put and kept her eyes on the floor the entire time. And you yourself couldn't stop glancing at her while the warm water dripped down your body.
-
Diane finally looked up, once you advised her that you were decent. She smiled from ear to ear, and her brown eyes grew just a size bigger. The older woman walked towards you, and unexpectedly threw her arms around you.
"You look so cute in my clothes." Her voice vibrated through your body, because her head was now rested against your chest.
You were tense. You think, by the way that Diane gently ran her hand against your back, that she noticed your stillness. Eventually though, you reciprocated the action, and used your own bold move by laying your head atop of hers.
"Its getting so late, I still have to call a tow truck" you mumbled into her hair, your voice sounding tired from the relaxation of the position.
"Nonsense, honey. Stay the night. We can do that in the morning" she said, so causally too.
"Are you sure you wouldn't mind."
"I wouldn't. You're good company. It's been pretty lonely since Chloe left anyways."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be" Diane assured, she lifted her head up, though her arms still rested around your waist. "As much as it upsets me, it's good for her. I can't hold her back forever."
"You're a good mother, Diane."
The older woman moved her face closer to yours, for a moment, you thought she was going for your lips, but hers ended up placing a kiss on your cheek instead. Your cheek that was burning red. "Thank you, sweet pea. Let me brush your hair before it gets all knotted, hm?" She touched your wet strands, twirling it through her fingers. You nodded. You could've brush your hair yourself but...it felt nice to have her -only her- take care of you.
She sat you between her legs, which you weren't expecting, but you didn't mind. The brush ran through your hair, slow, and gentle. Taking her time, to where it had given you goosebumps when her fingers gradually brushed over the back of your neck.
"Your hair is so pretty" if she compliments me once more, I might actually explode.
"Thank you. I always thoughts yours was though."
You heard her giggle, and when you felt it close to your back, you realized just how close she was. In thanks, she kissed your clothed shoulder. She was...very touchy, very lovey. She had always been like that with you, but she never...kissed you so much. You two had also never really had alone time with Chloe around anyways.
When she was done with her repetitive strokes through your hair, she had got up to put her brush away. You nearly whimpered. The loss of contact, the loss of warmth; you didn't like it. Now that you knew what you were missing, you couldn't live without having her all over you.
"What if we watched a movie?" She sat back down beside you. Her hand found home on your knee, and a gentle thumb stroked back and forth.
"Okay but no scary movies" you turned your attention towards the storm roaming outside of the window. You were hardly able to see it from the raindrops grouping together on the glass. "You know...because I don't want you to get scared or anything."
"Or is it because your just a big old scaredy cat?" Came her teasing response. She moved in closer, and started skittering her nails up and down your sides.
You gasped, being sensitive to begin with, and started laughing while trying to push her hands away. Diane, after a few seconds, gave in and just rested her hands on your waist.
"Dianeee!" you dragged, you voice whiny and loud. "I'm serious. I won't be able to sleep." You tried to sound stern, you really did, but she had made it nearly impossible for you to suppress your smile.
"Okay, okay. Well, you go find a kids movie to watch while I make the popcorn." She stood up again, took you hand, and tugged you up too.
"Diane Sherman! Stop bullying me! I will not be watching a kids movie."
"Sure" she winked at you. You simply just rolled your eyes.
You walked back downstair together, then went your separate ways to said rooms. Diane's living room was cozy. It had a warm color scheme, and the lights were dim from when she previously sat in here, before you knocked at her door.
You promptly melted into her couch. You usually rested when you got home from work, but tonight, you had been on your feet for much longer due to the circumstances.
You grabbed the remote and started flipping through Netflix movies. You didn't know exactly what Diane was into, so you would wait until she returned to decide.
"Find anything?" Diane, balancing a big bowl of popcorn and two mugs of hot chocolate, asks. She set the three things down on the coffee table in front of you both, and pulled out a bulky blanket that was folded in the corner of the room.
"What about 'Grease?"
"Mhm I like it!" She says. You smile up at her.
When she sits on the couch, she lays the blanket over the both of you. She notices that she can hardly feel your body warmth. She realizes, how you're doing everything in your power to not even accidentally touch her. "Stop acting so shy, honey" she giggled, like you were playing a joke on her "you just showered in front of me and now you're nervous?"
You were nervous then too, but she's right.
"Sorry, it's just been a long day," was your best excuse. You do eventually relax once the opening credits begin to play.
A few minutes go by, and a loud bolt of thunder cracks, startling you. You jump, and hide into Diane's side. In this moment, you really don't care about the anxiety of being around Diane. Besides your feelings for her, she makes you feel safe, like you could completely shatter in her hands, and trust that she would glue you back together.
"Shh it's okay, baby" she cooed. Her arm protectively wrapped around your trembling body. And if the lightning didn't kill you, than those words sure as hell was going to. "It's just thunder, sweetie, I got you."
"I- I know. It just scared me. I hate thunder" but you still didn't bother to move, because if you did, you feared you wouldn't feel as comforted.
"You're safe with me, okay?"
You nod against her. She doesn't move either. So you focus your attention back to the tv screen, hoping to distract yourself. And it works enough to eventually lull you into a deep sleep. Or maybe it was Diane's gentle rubs on your back that put you to sleep. Either way, you were out like a light.
-
When you wake up, it’s from the feeling of Diane’s fingertips softly brushing over your forehead, and her saying “honey?” as if you two had been married for years.
“Hm?” comes the confused, groggy sound from your throat.
“The movies over. You slept right through it.” She laughs once again tonight, and that sound makes you think that you might’ve woken up in heaven instead.
“Oh god I’m sorry” you scoff at yourself, and lift your body into a sitting position. “I can never get through a movie without falling asleep.” Your hairs a mess, and your face is puffy with sleep. You’re embarrassed of the feeling of looking so awful around her, but she doesn’t think that you’re any less than adorable. If anything, she feels blessed that she got to see you in this state.
“It’s okay, how about we head up to bed now?” We head up to bed. Head up to our bed, is what you wish it was.
“Mhm” your lips smack together, dry, and slightly chapped.
By the time you’ve made it upstairs, you no longer feel so tired, and you’re more alert as she gently pulls you into her room.
“Are you sure?” You asked, and you don’t have to specify because she knows what you’re asking. “I mean I can just sleep on the couch or something.” You awkwardly stand in the middle of the room, scratching the back of your neck as she pulls down the duvet.
“No, I want you to sleep with me if you’re okay with that. I wouldn’t have you sleep on the uncomfortable couch. Besides, what happened to you not wanting to be alone?” She mimics your words from earlier, teasing while she walks closer to you.
“I just don’t want to intrude.”
“Well maybe I want you to intrude” she says, and you could tell she’s suddenly in a playful mood. Then, in the next few minutes, you’re laying in Diane’s bed, beside Diane in complete darkness.
“Goodnight, y/n.”
“Night.”
You don’t fall asleep though. You can’t. Downstairs was different. You were laying on her, but not in her bed with her. It way felt too intimate. You…liked it, just not right now.
You lay still, very still. You take consideration of your breathing, competing with the silence in the room to see who can be quieter. But Diane isn’t sleeping either, and she can tell that you’re not. It’s obvious, but you just don’t realize that.
She abruptly sits up and turns on the lamp beside her bed. You look up at her, and your senses are suddenly overpowered with DianeDianeDiane. You can smell her shampoo, on her pillow, and your hair from earlier. Can see her brown eyes burning into your skin, in such a nice way. Can feel her through her clothes that you are wearing. Diane is everywhere.
“Okay, what’s wrong?” She finally says. Neither of you will get sleep until this is settled, and it’s almost one in the morning.
“Nothings wrong.”
“Something’s wrong. I can feel it.”
“Are you some sort of witch now?” You ask, trying to change the subject with some silly comedy relief.
“Y/n, i’m serious. What is going on with you?”
“I guess i’m just tired” you shrugged, and close your eyes to really pull that effect.
It doesn’t work. And you realize that, so you open them again.
“Talk to me. You know you can tell me anything” she grabs your hand, her thumb brushes over your knuckles. She’s making it hard to not expose all of your feeling for her, right here, and right now.
“Diane, it’s just…”
You stop yourself, trying to figure out how to put your feelings into words. How to even figure out your feelings yourself.
“It’s just that i’m in love.”
Her throat closes up. She might cry. Who could you be in love with, after all the care she’s given you. She can’t be mad though. She can’t. She wants you to be happy, even if it’s not with her.
“In love? With who?”
You elicit a sigh, partially annoyed that she hasn’t figured it out. Annoyed that you have to tell her. “With you.”
She doesn’t answer at first, and you’re not looking at her, you’re looking at the wall, so you’re afraid that you’ve made her upset.
“And i’m sorry. If it’s makes you uncomfortable, or you don’t feel the same, I’m sorry. It’s just…i’ve felt this way for awhile and i’ve tried to suppress it, but tonight-”
She kisses you. You weren’t expecting it. Her lips touch your’s so unexpectedly that you don’t return the kiss. Not until you realize, and then you deepen it. Then you realize how soft those pink lips are, and how passionately she can kiss you.
She pulls away for a moment, and now she’s hovering over you. You try your best to keep your tired eyes open because you can not miss this. “Now why would you suppress those feelings, honey?” She asks, but it’s not necessarily a question.
She kisses you again, because she can’t get enough, and all of those bottled up feelings -especially from tonight- are pouring out after it’s been filled to the brim.
“I’m in love with you too, sweetie. Haven’t you noticed?” She pushed your hair out of your face so she could get a better look at you. You blush, and look down with only your eyes.
“I guess I just didn’t put the clues together.”
She bites her lip and smiles widely, a small giggle being heard from her. “Well with that being said, I figure that we can both sleep now?” She suggests.
“I don’t think sleeping with be a problem anymore. I need rest so I can kiss you even more tomorrow.”
“Already so needy, baby?”
“Leave me alone, okay? I’ve been waiting forever to do this” you say, and even though you have been waiting for forever, you’re only teasing her. You lean forward, and place a simple kiss on her lips to show her exactly what you’ve been waiting to do.
After a few seconds of enjoying each other, she eventually shuts off the lamp and lays back in bed. This time, your not afraid to lay in her arms as she kindly welcomes you.
“I really do love you” you admit. Her lips meet the top of your head, a little longer than a simple peck would last. “I really love you too, my y/n.”

Lamborghini Countach LP400 S "Cannonball Run," 1979. Chassis number 1121112 was originally delivered to the Lamborghini distributor for Rome, Italy, SEA Auto, who almost immediately had the car exported to the United States of America. Hal Needham. the movie's director, decided the factory original Countach wasn’t quite wild enough for the film, so it was modified by adding a new front spoiler with additional lights for night driving. In 2021 The Cannonball Run Countach made history by entering the Library of Congress National Historic Vehicle Register.
