PRINTING NOTES: This typeset goes pretty close to the edges of the pages, so be careful when cutting it, and the first signature or so has double-spread images, so I'd really recommend making sure your double-sided printing is calibrated for this one (whether you're doing it at home or at a printing shop).

HEY!!!! HI! finally. If you've checked the Heat (1995) (Al Pacino and Robert De Niro Go on a Date: The Movie) tag on AO3 in the past year you've probably checked out Hotel Vast Horizon (Michael Mann Could Never: The Fic). Welp here it is on paper.

The common thread in the typeset was always the ocean (and shit, I said the o-word. did you know there are like 20 references to water, seas and storms in HVH, and yet never once "ocean" is said?). The other thread was the Bitstream Cooper typeface, which is round and curvy and so pleasing on the eye. Isn't it? Also Arial (underrated), because I needed it for the sequencing to show that Michael Mann is a loser. I'm kidding. Or am I? But this brings me to another major thing: the sequencing. (The common denominator between movies and books: the sequence.) That can only be apprehended on the full PDF/book, and it's really something that did not really exist (in so much depths) in the previous typesets.

As to what the sequencing is saying, or what the hell this intro is about (no I did not have a stroke when I did it), I will not say much if only that it is about the vocabulary, the image, the movie, the things that go beyond fate, a little bit Neil vs Vincent and a lot the reason vs the heart. More things shall remain unexplained because I feel they would be better experienced than laid out here.

If you'd still like to know what's actually going on in this thing don't hesitate to send in an ask lol.

More details on the technical matters + a visualization at the bottom, because there is work involved and my micro typography is so clean it could give Neil McCauley a boner.

help where do i even begin? I learnt how to use FontForge to create a new typeface specifically for that symbol at the beginning of the paragraphs in order to implement it in InDesign (see fig.1 below), I changed the Arial's @ in FontForge too (fig.2) to have it fit with the underline in @ rocket88, what the hell.

2. I also drew 11 (I think) illustrations for the intro (yes, those knots......), but that wasn't as complicated as I thought it would be. I do deeply curse InDesign's "Print Booklet" function for how much it hates images though.

3. I would like you to meet my InDesign characters styles (fig.3) as they simply are impeccable and the best you will ever see, I could not have been more professional if you had paid me 5 grand for this. The hyphens! The dashes! The custom small caps!

4. To get even further in the micro typography. It is, in most, most cases, much too time-consuming to properly kern (=modulate the space between your characters and/or words) your text for how little the average eye will get out of it, and/or your average graphic designer is certainly not getting paid enough to actually do it properly. I, on the other hand, am insane and unemployed, therefore yes, I kerned this shit. Micro typo is actually the sculpture of the white spaces of your page. When done thoroughly it does mean checking every characters with your own eyeballs.

So in english, since this typeset is in english, the rules are no spaces for punctuation. Right? and not right ? It makes for a pretty tight block. I do argue too tight - although of course you'll also have times where you want tight. (And this is all within the 5% of the time where kerning matters.) That might not sound too bad until you get to em-dashes, this '—' thing. Which is a literally useless punctuation mark that is so hysterically long it'll leave an unnatural horizontal void in your text and draw all attention to it—you know, instead of the text itself. Useless, because it can always be replaced by commas, colon, semicolon, or parentheses. Unnatural, because em/en-dashes do not follow a typeface's characteristics (when hyphens do! fig4), so they hardly fit with serifs, AND characters are generally vertically stressed in latin (fig5: which one looks normal?) except... well. So you'll have the tightest group of punctuation marks humping each other?!"— then a dash literally the size of a whole ass m that looks nothing like the rest. ridiculous. absurd.

Anyway the point is I said bye-bye to this aberration and used hyphens stretched at 260% (lmao. it works so well?). And sometimes 230%. Sometimes with a space after, sometimes not - if not the same meaning then why the same treatment (fig6)? I wondered at this point if I wasn't going too far (lol) but this is the point of micro typo, so, whatever. See fig7 for more kerning stuff.

5. I have far less things to say about this part than the last even though I must have spent twice as much time on it, but I just wanted to say that I manually set the text rag on all 69 pages, it looks nice, I love tetris, AND!!!! the greatest thing about the whole fucking book (fig8): the text starts on the top line of the first column, and ends, on p.91, on the LAST line of the column, at the very bottom of the page, and IT IS NOT. BY. CHANCE!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

There’s a pretty nasty cold front coming to the Ohio River Valley and Northeast toward the end of the week and which means there’s a chance of rolling blackouts in some places as the heat demands go up. 

One of the reasons I got back into pen and paper games is as a sort of “prep” for a similar storm a few years back. Having lived through a few nasty natural disasters, boredom is a real issue. I’ve seen it drive people to take dumb risks they probably wouldn’t have otherwise. 

So I thought I’d list out some of my own and some of my favorite free/pay what you want/cheap games that you can print off/save on your computer or phone ahead of time. Most are one sheet because that’s what I like but some full books.

Wedding DIY vs. Buy: When to Do It Yourself vs. What to Spend Your Money On

When it comes to planning your wedding, there’s no greater reality check than comparing your dreams for your big day to the reality of your budget. The good news is, DIYing some of your wedding tasks can save you a ton of money without leaving you feeling let down on your big day.

And, if they’re done right, it will give your entire event a more personal and memorable touch. But, don’t go too far or you’ll wind up putting unnecessary stress on yourself… and you might be disappointed in the outcome. Some things are just not worth the risk.

Here’s a look at the wedding details you can do yourself, versus what should be left up to the pros.

Wedding DIYS: Details You Can Do Yourself

Tasks you can handle well in advance of your wedding day are perfect for DIYers. If you can sit at your dining room table and complete a task well in advance of your wedding day, go for it! Here are some ideas to help you get started.

Your Veil

Bridal veils can put a huge dent in your budget. If you would rather put that money towards your dress, why not make your own veil? Pull up some inspiration on YouTube and Pinterest to help you get started and go with a simple design. Stay away from expensive and complicated embellishments like beading or lace to keep costs low.

Bridal Party Accessories

If you’ve got some sewing and crafting skills, you could make accessories like bow ties, belts, drawstring handbags, jewelry, or hair accessories for your wedding party. If you make things they can wear again, they’ll double as a gift, saving you from having to buy those separately. You could make some of your own accessories, too… and don’t rule out borrowing a gorgeous necklace or some earrings from one of the women in your family.

Flower Girl Details

Your flower girl doesn’t have to carry a pricey pomander bouquet or posy. Decorate a little basket with some pretty ribbons, fill it with flower petals, and have her scatter them as she walks down the aisle.

Pew Decorations

You can save yourself a lot of money by making your own decorations for guest seating at the ceremony. Keep things simple with large ribbon bows and long ribbons with some little silk flowers tucked in. If your venue is already ornate, feel free to skip them altogether.

Entryway Décor

There’s no need to blow your budget on elaborate entryway décor. Simply hang two pomanders or wreaths on the door handles at your ceremony venue. Then, put someone in charge of moving them to the reception venue to decorate the doors there. Table signage and other reception focal points are also great DIY projects, as long as you do them well in advance and don’t wait until the last minute.

Wedding Favors

Don’t buy expensive favors for your guests when you can easily DIY them! Edible wedding favors are a great choice because no one wants a monogrammed shot glass or tchotchke. Make individual goodie bags with candy in your wedding colors and put them on the tables or by the door. Or, make a donation to your favorite charity on behalf of your guests instead and have your master of ceremonies announce it during the reception.

Invitations

If you’ve got access to a computer and a printer, wedding invitations can easily be done on a budget. You don’t even have to be particularly crafty to pull off this DIY wedding project. Check out Etsy for customizable printable invitations and look on Pinterest for endless inspiration. Use beautiful scrapbook paper to cut your own envelope liners or make a rubber stamp of your menu and apply it to paper doilies. The ideas are virtually endless, and you can even do fancy calligraphy with your computer at a fraction of the cost of hiring a pro.

Your Makeup

Contrary to popular opinion, you don’t have to look like a totally different person for your walk down the aisle. There’s no reason you can’t do your makeup yourself, especially if you’ve got a knack for it and know what you like. Watch some YouTube videos for tips and ideas. Be sure to practice your look ahead of time so it’s easy to replicate on your big day. As added insurance, make sure you like the way your makeup looks in photos. Your engagement photos or bridal portrait session would make for a great test-run!

Wedding Buys: What to Leave to the Pros

Some things are best left up to the pros, especially things that have to be done at the last minute or during the celebration. If you’re struggling to decide what to DIY vs buy for your wedding, here’s what’s best to spend your money on:

Food

Good morning! Okay, so I tend to also make new year's resolutions in July for my birthday (because it's a new year for me). Usually that involves a lot of big plans, that tend to fall apart before the week is out, much less the month. But, I am determined that this is going to be my year. My biggest goals are to finish revising my damn novel and get it published. And to finally get myself better organized.

For the revision, I'm fairly confident that I've got the plot hammered out. Now I'm mostly dealing with "talking heads in a featureless void." I basically told myself the story with dialogue. Now I get to go back and add descriptions/setting/action/emotional impact/inner thoughts. Flesh this thing out and make it "pretty". (Well, the world these people live in is NOT pretty. They may rule the city, but they do so from the shadows, and their world can be brutal.)

For getting myself organized, I'm making my own planner using printables, nice paper, discs from a Happy Planner, and a special hole punch. See, I keep buying planners, but then they don't work for me. This way, I can completely customize it exactly to be useful to me. Everything I need, and nothing I don't. And change it up on a whim, just by printing different sheets for it. I so far have printed out a calendar and habit tracker for July. I'm going to also print out a weekly goals page, a week-at-a-glance type planner page, a weekly cleaning schedule, and daily planner pages. Along with some fun things, like a reading log, and movie/TV show log. I also haven't found a template for it, but I want to make project planning pages, where I break big projects (like my revision, getting myself organized, etc) into smaller chunks, just to have one place to view total progress, plus a list of steps to keep me from getting overwhelmed. Anyway, tomorrow's project (other than laundry, ugh) is to get this thing put together. I need to download Gimp to my new computer to get my covers put together. That's gonna be fun.

Anyway! I have other things I want to work on, but those are the big ones. I'll pe posting weekly updates, so block or mute the bella gets organized tag if you don't want to know how this is going. So it's kind of a known rule that fanfic pearls will hit you even and especially when you expect them the least, right? The Godfather, Michael Corleone/Al Neri, small fandom and smaller ship, a movie that I didn't even really care for in the first place, but goddamn if this fic did not grab me and refuse to let me go because it was TOO. GOOD. I can't even begin to explain, it just sounds true - and Neri's POV is a joy to read. The more he simps after Michael, the better it is, and I ran with that for the typeset.

Al followed because, to all intents and purposes, Michael Corleone was God.

And so everytime Al thinks about Michael, or refers to him in any way, the texte is "corrected" to add caps to every Michael-related thing. Pronouns, adjectives, some names, body parts (His Eyes, etc). If he's truly Al's God, then... he ought to be treated like one. As though Al Neri held this as his own sacred text corrected by hand.
