Just a Joke
Warnings: Language. Slight sexual undertone at the very end... I think that's it, if not let me know and I’ll fix it
Pairing: Joe Mazzello x OFC
Word count: Almost 1.4 K
Summary: It’s April First, which means its Joking season. But is the joke funny or?
Note: I got this idea from an April fools joke that my twin played on me.
~~~~~~
Rowyn met Rachael and Sidney at the coffee shop. After they had gotten their drinks they sat down at one of the free tables. “Guys….” she ran her finger along the rim of the mug.
“What’s up Rowyn?” Sidney asked. Rowyn began to cry and Rachael immediately went to comfort her. “Ro, what’s the matter?”
“I think I need to break up with Joe.” Rowyn looked at their faces as she wiped the tears away.
“What did he do? Do I need to go kick his ass?” Sidney asked.
“Things just haven’t been the same since November,” Rowyn said, referring to her and Joe’s two week break up.
“I thought you guys patched things up?” Rachael asked.
“We did, but they just haven’t been the same.”
“I’m going to kill him,” Sidney said, picking up her drink and downing it before grabbing her bag. “Come on Rachael, if I’m going to jail for killing someone, so are you. Where is he?”
“Probably at the apartment? He said he needed to read over a script his manager sent him.”
“Good, I know where that is. Come on guys.” Rowyn downed her own drink, ignoring the hot liquid as she ran after her friends to go to Joe’s. She chewed on her lip, debating if she should warn Joe but decided against it, knowing that if he knew that Sidney was going to kick his ass, he would try and talk her out of it. And Rowyn wanted to see the look on his face when she came in guns blazing (she didn’t have a gun, or rather Rowyn didn’t think she did).
As they went up the elevator to Joe’s apartment Rowyn became more anxious. How would Joe react to this? Would he find it funny or be hurt? She tried to breathe as Sidney knocked on the door. When Joe opened the door, confusion crossed his face before Sidney barged in. “We need to talk.”
“As in, you and I need to talk?” Joe asked, looking from Sidney to Rowyn. “About what?” Rowyn quietly closed the door.
“You are a son of a bitch if you think you can hurt Rowyn.”
“Wait, what?”
“Tell him what you said to us Rowyn.” Sidney said.
“I don’t think I should.”
“Oh, I think you should. I’m already riled up. You are going to tell him what you said to us and then I’m going to figure out why you said that, then I’m going to kick his ass.” Joe frowned and looked at Rowyn.
“Rowyn?”
“I said I think we should break up.” Rowyn mumbled.
“You said what?” Joe asked.
“I said that I think we should break up.” Rowyn said a little louder.
“You said what? Why didn’t you come to me about this?”
“So, my question for you, slime, is why in the hell is Rowyn saying this?”
“I don’t know. Honestly. I have absolutely no idea.” Joe said as Sidney got into Joe’s space.
“Woah, Sidney. Calm down. I think we all need to calm down. Take a breath. Let Joe explain himself.”
“You’re right. Go ahead, explain yourself.” Sidney took a seat on Joe’s couch. “I’m waiting.” Joe ran his fingers through his dark red hair, looking at Rowyn before starting.
“I mean, I guess what Rowyn is referring to is our relationship after our breakup and subsequent rekindling of a relationship.”
“Well it obviously wasn’t rekindling was it.”
“Sidney, let him explain.”
“I’m cool, I’m good. Continue.”
“I just have had trust issues ever since my ex did what she did. And I just don’t trust Rowyn as much as I did before we took our hiatus.”
“And that’s hurting your relationship. You, Joe Mazzello, are a fool. Rowyn is the most trustworthy person I know. To not put all of your trust in her is foolish. You are an idiot.”
“Sidney!” Rachael said.
“Sorry, but it’s true.”
“Sidney.” Rachael said through her teeth.
“Anyways. The reason I feel like it’s time for us to end our relationship,” Rowyn began looking from Sidney to Joe, “Is because it is really hard to be with someone who doesn’t trust you. Who doesn’t believe that you are in it with them for the long haul. If you can’t trust me and don’t feel like you can’t communicate with me honestly and fully then we can’t have a good relationship. I want you to be happy, and if that means you find someone better who you trust more, who you know you will be happy with, then that's what that means.” Joe nodded.
“I understand that and I appreciate it.”
“I’m still going to kill you.” Sidney stood and made her way to Joe.
“Why?” Joe asked.
“Because, if Rowyn felt that she needed to break up with you because you are a shitty communicator and can’t trust her then buddy, you are going to feel my wrath.”
“Ok, hold up.” Rowyn said. “I think that we need to talk.”
“Talk? You want to talk to me?”
“Yes. I’m not upset about this. I’ve thought about it long and hard.”
“You aren’t upset? Rowyn, you were crying earlier. When you broke up for two weeks back in November, you literally told Rach and I that if you and Joe ever did end things you wouldn’t know what to do. You said you feel lost without him, that with him you are whole. What the hell is going on?”
“When that happened it was a shock to the system. Joe and I have both talked this over. We both agree that it’s not working as well as we had hoped.”
“That’s bullshit. You and Joe were made for each other.”
“Thanks, but maybe we were meant for each other at this time and place.” Rowyn looked over at Joe, smiling. “Maybe we helped each other with what we needed each other to help in problems that we had right now, and now that we’ve done that we can move on.”
“Or maybe you’re an idiot too.” Sidney said.
“Are you trying to convince me to stay with Joe?”
“If I have to.” Rachael shook her head.
“Rachael do you feel the same way?”
“I mean, you guys are perfect together. In the years I’ve known you I’ve never seen you happier. You constantly talk about him. Even when you guys were taking a break you talked constantly about him. I just wish I knew what was going through your mind.”
“I can tell you.”
“By all means.” Rachael said.
“April Fools.” Sidney’s face fell and she looked around her, grabbing a pillow and picking it up. Rachael did the same thing and they both made their way to Rowyn.
“Are you serious?”
“Yes. It's an April Fool’s joke.”
“This was all a fucking joke?” Sidney turned to Joe, who was smiling. “And you were in on this too?”
“Actually I wasn’t, I thought she was serious.” Sidney handed him her pillow.
“Then you deserve this more than I do.” He handed it back to her.
“Oh no, I have a better punishment planned.” Rowyn stopped smiling at his words. Sidney and Rachael began to hit Rowyn with the pillows.
“It was a cruel joke. I almost committed a crime for you.” Sidney said after they had finished hitting her with the pillows. “I hope your punishment is good Joe.” Sidney said.
“Oh it will be.” Joe smirked.
“I think it’s time for us to leave. Rowyn, see you later.” Rachael said as she hugged Rowyn before heading to the door. Sidney did the same and they left Rowyn and Joe alone standing in the large living area.
“Joe… It was an april fools joke.”
“Oh, I know. But it was not funny. At all.” Rowyn’s cheeks burned.
“Do you really not trust me?”
“Since November I have trusted you more than anyone Rowyn, you know this.”
“I had to think of something good Joe, they get me every year.”
“Yeah, but to bring our relationship into it. Putting me on the spot like that… I was seriously worried.”
“I would never break up with you.”
“I get that but it was still not funny.”
“So is my punishment an equally cruel joke?”
“You’ll just have to wait to find out.” Joe said, a wicked glint in his eye as he kissed her nose.
